J o an Miró : Working P ro ofs from the Studio As part of our 20th year anniversary, we are proud to present this collection of unique, hand-embellished works on paper by Joan Miró. Most of these engravings were executed in the studio of Piero Crommelynck and illustrate the important, collaborative relationship between the artist and his master printer. Piero Crommelynck was one of the most respected intaglio engravers of the 20th Century. Once named “The Prince of Printmakers,” Piero, passionately worked to master the technical complexities of printmaking and learn the essential role of the engraver. He understood that making a print is unlike drawing on paper and offers the opportunity to create entirely different effects. It requires an extensive series of techniques and the assistance of a true craftsman to achieve the desired outcome. In his studio, Miró created a series of working proofs leading up to the finished works - collaborative masterpieces combining Miró’s unique vision and Crommelynck’s ingenuity. Here you will find experiments with color that sometimes differ from the finished piece, many with extensive instructions to the printer in the artist’s hand – an intimate view of the creative process. Most of the works presented are trial proofs, working examples and definitive proofs designated bon à tirer (good to pull) that are “one-of-a-kind” impressions and thus extremely rare. Some pieces are offered individually and others, so closely related to the evolution of the work, remain together as groupings. This presentation of works by Miró is just one of many significant exhibitions of Modern Master material that Galerie Maximillian has offered since June of 1997. We look forward to seeing you in the gallery this Winter to view this collection and other new treasures. Warmest regards,

Anne Chapman Director
