La sculpture de Jim Amaral conceptualise la position de l’humanité tant d’un point de vue spirituel, géographique que temporel. Le questionnement est obsessionnel : celui du sens de notre condition humaine.

Ainsi, la série Chariots de l’humanité, qui regroupe des pièces uniques en bronze, véhicule fortement le sentiment de solitude dans l’univers. Paradoxalement, l’humanité toute entière est embarquée dans cette aventure avec ce qu’elle a produit pour créer du sens, ses constructions architecturales, ses mythes, ses traditions, etc. Les sculptures de Jim Amaral sont aussi sonores. Le spectateur est invité à bouger des éléments parfois discrètement dissimulés —sphères, spirales, roues—. Les sons produits résonnent comme des appels à des échos tant attendus.

The sculptures of Jim Amaral conceive the place of humankind from a spiritual point of view just as much as from a geographic or temporal one. The enquiry is an obsession: the meaning of the human condition.

From this perspective, the series Chariots of Humankind, which brings together one-of-a-kind works in bronze, strongly expresses the sense of solitude in the universe. Curiously, all of humanity is carried into this adventure with those things it has created to convey meaning: its architectural constructions, myths, traditions, etc. Jim Amaral’s sculptures also make sound. Viewers are invited to move the pieces, which are sometimes discretely hidden —spheres, spirals, wheels—. The sounds produced resonate like calls to highly awaited echoes.

Assim, a série Carroças da humanidade, que reúne peças únicas em bronze, veicula fortemente o sentido da solidão no universo. Paradoxalmente, a humanidade inteira embarcou nessa aventura com o que ela produziu para criar sentidos, suas construções arquiteturais, seus mitos, suas tradições, etc. As esculturas de Jim Amaral são também sonoras. O espectador é convidado a tocar elementos às vezes discretamente dissimulados —esferas, espirais, rodas—. Os sons produzidos ressoam como chamadas a ecos tão esperados.

JIM AMARAL AN EXILE IN ART

Jim Amaral was born March 3, 1933, in Pleasanton, California. In 1957, he settled in Bogota. He lived and worked in Paris in the 1970s. His condition of selfexile and his itinerant lifestyle liberated Amaral’s artistic output from cultural constraints and was defining to the independent and international nature of his œuvre. Over a career that spans more than half a century, Amaral has been dedicated to his drawings, watercolors, etchings, collages, assemblages, artist’s books, and sculpture.

Amaral has been widely recognized for his draughtsmanship, the subtlety and refinement of his technique as well as his imaginative and cultured universe.

During his Parisian period, Amaral found an intellectual affinity with the milieu of the time as well as a popular audience which brought him critical acclaim by authors like Jacques Leenhardt and José Pierre. His drawings from the 1970s often treat subjects in an erotic and sensual manner with a realistic style. He typically depicts fragmented body parts, human sexual organs, flowers that bloom lips or ears as petals, and biomorphic beings. Invisible Flowers is one of his most remarkable creations. The title alludes to Invisible Cities, written by Italo Calvino, a friend of the artist during his years in Paris. His work from this period also comes in the form of collages and object interventions on antique boxes, old photographs, antique books, and antique colonial furniture. The surrealist roots of these creations are evident.

In 1980 Amaral returned to Bogotá. In the following two decades he worked with oil and acrylic paint, rendering meditative compositions with shadowed and earthy palettes. His finesse finds expression in this medium as well. Amongst them, a series titled Mourning Fruit, characterized by various arrangements of dried and mummified fruits placed on intricate varieties of patterned surfaces with celestial bodies hanging somberly or luminously in the sky. In the tradition of vanitas and memento mori, with these paintings the artist reflects on death, decay and the passage of time.

In the early 1990s Amaral was able to cast his three-dimensional creations at the Shidoni Foundry in Tesuque, New Mexico. His cire-perdue bronzes from this period are characterized by mythological themes, metamorphosis, death, the human condition and the mysteries of the cosmos. Often his figures are depicted with small heads, absent facial features, and gender ambiguities. The sensuality that characterized his earlier two-dimensional creations takes on new veneers in the textures and refined patinas of his bronzes, in which he also explores solidity and monumentality. Eduardo Serrano speaks of the creatures rendered in these bronzes as expectant and concerned for the future with “composed anxiety.”

As a mature artist Amaral has focused on the creation of watercolor and ink drawings, artist books, and a fascinating array of single-edition bronze sculptures. His bronzes have, in recent years, made a departure from human and animal figures towards desolate geometrical landscapes, ashen carts, and timeless machines that appear simultaneously futuristic and archaic, caught in a time beyond death. Mute and undecipherable, these contraptions —these artefacts— inhabit a dimension where movement, time and sound disobey the laws of reality as we know them. Planes shift, cubes resonate, wheels spin, and spheres revolve.

With these vehicles, these worlds, at once static and fluid, Amaral questions the preconceptions often imposed upon art and the determinism of science, reminding the spectator that our lives are bound inevitably by the dark mystery of existence. These sculptures, now on display in the exhibition Chariots of Humankind at the Galerie Agnes Monplaisir, present Amaral’s return to Paris after more than thirty years of prolific artistic exploration.

Jim Amaral est né le 3 mars 1933 à Pleasanton en Californie. Il s’installe à Bogotá en 1957. Il vit et travaille à Paris dans les années 1970. Sa condition d’auto-exilé, sa vie itinérante, ont libéré la production artistique d’Amaral de contraintes culturelles, définissant la nature indépendante, internationale, de son œuvre. Au cours d’une carrière de plus d’un demi-siècle, Amaral se consacre au dessin, à l’aquarelle et à la gravure, à des collages, des assemblages, des livres d’artiste et des sculptures.

Amaral est très reconnu pour le dessin, pour la subtilité et le raffinement de sa technique, ainsi que pour son univers imaginaire et culturel. Durant sa période parisienne, Amaral trouve une affinité intellectuelle avec les milieux de l’époque, ainsi qu’un public, ce qui lui a valu l’approbation de critiques tels que Jacques Leenhardt ou José Pierre. Dans ses dessins des années 1970 les sujets sont souvent traités de manière érotique, sensuelle, dans un style réaliste.

L’artiste représente habituellement des parties fragmentées du corps humain, des organes sexuels, des fleurs aux pétales de lèvres ou d’oreilles, ou bien des êtres biomorphiques. Invisible Flowers est l’une des plus remarquables parmi ces œuvres, l’intitulé faisant référence aux Invisible Cities d’Italo Calvino, ami de l’artiste durant son séjour parisien. Sa production à cette époque comprend également des collages, des objets remaniés tels que des coffrets anciens, de vieilles photographies, des livres anciens ou du mobilier de l’époque coloniale.

Le rapport entre ces œuvres et le surréalisme est évident.

En 1980, Amaral se retrouve à Bogotá. Au cours des deux décennies suivantes, il travaille la peinture à l’huile et l’acrylique, créant des compositions méditatives dans une palette sombre aux couleurs de terre. Parmi celles-ci, une série appelée Mourning Fruit montre des compositions de fruits desséchés, momifiés, placés sur des arrière-plans aux motifs compliqués, avec des cieux scandés par les corps célestes sombres ou lumineux. Dans la tradition des vanitas et des memento mori, ces tableaux proposent une réflexion sur la mort, la décomposition, le passage du temps.

Au début des années 1990 Amaral réalise des œuvres tridimensionnelles à la fonderie Shidoni, à Tesuque au Nouveau-Mexique. Ces bronzes, exécutés à la cire-perdue, se caractérisent par des thèmes mythologiques, dont les métamorphoses, la mort, la condition humaine ou les mystères du cosmos.

Les figures sont souvent représentées avec de petites têtes, aux traits du visage manquants, au genre sexuel ambigu. La sexualité dont s’étaient caractérisées ses créations tridimensionnelles antérieures prend un revêtement nouveau à travers les textures et patines raffinées de ses bronzes, au moyen desquels l’artiste s’essaie avec la solidité et la monumentalité. Eduardo Serrano décrit les créatures représentées par ces bronzes comme figées dans un esprit d’attente, préoccupées par l’avenir dans une « angoisse composée ».

En artiste accompli, Amaral se consacre à la réalisation d’aquarelles et de dessins à l’encre, de livres d’artiste, ainsi que d’une gamme fascinante de bronzes en exemplaire unique. Les bronzes réalisés ces dernières années délaissent la figuration humaine ou animale au profit de paysages géométriques, désertiques, avec des chariots cendrés et des machines hors du temps, se présentant sous un aspect à la fois futuriste et archaïque, saisis dans une temporalité d’outretombe. Muettes, indéchiffrables, ces inventions —des artefacts— peuplent une dimension où le mouvement, le temps, le son, échappent aux lois de la réalité que nous connaissons. Les plans se déplacent, les cubes résonnent, les roues et sphères tournent. Au moyen de ces véhicules, de ces mondes à la fois statiques et fluides, Amaral s’interroge sur les idées générales imposées à l’art, ainsi que sur le déterminisme de la science, rappelant au spectateur que nos vies sont fatalement liées au mystère obscur de l’existence. Ces sculptures, actuellement présentées à la Galerie Agnès Monplaisir, marquent le retour d’Amaral à Paris après plus de trente ans d’une vaste exploration artistique.

Né à Pleasanton, Californie, 1933. Amaral est reçu Bachelor of Arts à l’université Stanford (Californie) en 1954 avant d’intégrer la Cranbrook Academy of Art à Bloomfield (Michigan) en 1954-1955, où il rencontre sa future épouse, l’artiste colombienne Olga de Amaral. Il s’installe alors à Bogotá, Colombie, en 1957. Entre 1966 et 1969, Amaral vit à New-York. Il enseigne le dessin à la Penland School of the Arts and Crafts en Caroline du Nord, ainsi qu’à l’université Jorge Tadeo Lozano à Bogotá. Vers la fin des années 1960, Amaral expérimente de plus en plus avec les thèmes érotiques et, en 1970, contribue à l’exposition collective El erotismo en el arte à la Galerie Belarca à Bogotá. Au cours des années 1970, Amaral expose des œuvres en France, Italie, Suède, Allemagne et Belgique. Il vit et travaille actuellement à Bogotá.
