¡Es nuestro 35º aniversario! Para celebrarlo, le traemos de vuelta lo mejor del repertorio clásico y contemporáneo de GALA, pero con una nueva perspectiva y celebrando algunos de los autores más prominentes de la lengua Castellana. Estamos muy entusiasmados con la primera obra de nuestra temporada, El caballero de Olmedo de Lope de Vega, que montamos en colaboración con los dinámicos artistas del grupo Acción Sur de Madrid. GALA produjo esta obra por primera vez en inglés en 1985 en su teatro del viejo ‘Lansburgh.’ Nuestra reposición de la disparatada y divertida Divorciados, evangélicas y vegetarianos, que estrenó en el espacio del ‘Warehouse’ en 2003, subraya nuestra larga
relación con el prestigioso dramaturgo venezolano Gustavo Ott. Aunque La Cándida Eréndira será nuestra primera colaboración con el director colombiano Jorge Ali Triana, quien exitosamente adaptó la famosa novela de Gabriel García Márquez, siempre hemos admirado su trabajo innovador en el Repertorio Español de Nueva York. Finalmente, nuestra producción musical original, El Jazz Latino, investiga el valioso aporte musical de las grandes personalidades de ese género, como el puertorriqueño Tito Puente, el cual nos honró con su actuación en nuestra antigua casa de la ‘Park Road.’ Así que acompáñenos para sentir el “nuevo pulso de nuestro corazón añejo.”

For this 35th Anniversary we bring back the best of GALA’s classic and contemporary repertoire, but with a new perspective, and celebrate some of the most prominent writers of the Spanish language. We are excited about our opening show, The Knight from Olmedo by Lope de Vega, which we are mounting in collaboration with dynamic young artists of Spain’s Acción Sur. GALA first staged this play in English in 1985 at its theater in the old Lansburgh. Our restaging of the zany Divorcees, Evangelists and Vegetarians, which was presented in GALA’s Warehouse space in 2003, underscores our long-time relationship with the award-winning Venezuelan writer, Gustavo Ott.
While this is our first experience with Colombian artist Jorge Ali Triana, who will direct his acclaimed adaptation of Cándida Eréndira, the famous novel by Gabriel García Márquez, we have long admired his work with New York’s Repertorio Español. And, our original musical production, El Jazz Latino, will explore the beat of great personalities of that genre, like Puerto Rican Tito Puente, who performed in our former home on Park Road. You won’t want to miss our ArteAmericA presenting series either, featuring the spectacular Fuego Flamenco and the provocative Guillermo Gómez Peña. Moviéndose en un paisaje misterioso y poético en la costa del Caribe colombiano, La cándida Eréndira narra las desventuras de una joven cuya malvada abuela la obliga a prostituirse por haber incendiado accidentalmente su casa. Las dos mujeres recorren el desierto en una carpa donde se topan con indios, contrabandistas, soldados y buscavidas. García Márquez nos introduce en su fascinante mundo de lo ilusorio para señalarnos una realidad de hoy: el abuso y trata de menores. The young Eréndira is forced to sell herself by her grandmother to pay for accidentally burning down the family home. After traveling from town to town in the desert, Eréndira is wed to a young man who loves her deeply. Together they plot an escape. Triana turns this tragic tale into black comedy, revealing possibilities never imagined in the original novella.

Gustavo Ott, un dramaturgo familiar en nuestra programación, nos presenta esta cómica y tierna obra de tres mujeres: una divorciada a punto de suicidarse; una evangelista que está en constante conflicto con sus pasiones íntimas; y una vegetariana que altera su régimen alimenticio por el de su novio. Apoyándose mutuamente, las mujeres deciden pujar hacia adelante para recuperar su autoestima. This hilarious play of three women on the verge was a smash hit in GALA’s 2003 season. A divorcee is on the brink of suicide as she realizes her unfulfilled life has passed her by; a faux vegetarian is a high-octane diva who feels jilted and taken for granted by her boyfriend; and an evangelist constantly struggles with her inner passions. Ultimately, the women find comfort, and salvation, in each other.

JUNE/JUNIO 2 – 26, 2011 UNA REVISTA MUSICAL ORIGINAL DIRECCIÓN HUGO MEDRANO The encounter of Afro-Cuban rhythms with American jazz in New York City in the 1940s paved the way for the explosion of a genre known as “Latin Jazz.” The great U.S. jazz musician Dizzy Gillespie integrated the conga and clave rhythms into his big band, bringing into the limelight a fusion style that is still evolving today.

The entrance to the parking garage is at the corner on the right after you turn onto Park Road. Validate your parking ticket at the GALA box office and pay a $4 flat fee instead of the hourly rate. Parking is also available in the Target garage off of Park Road on the West side of 14th Street (between 14th and 16th Streets). $1 per hour.
