DRAMATURG'S NOTES Songs for a New World was the 1995 off-Broadway debut for awardwinning lyricist and composer, Jason Robert Brown. Brown’s works include Parade (1998) and Bridges of Madison County (2014), both of which were awarded the Tony Award for Best Score. Songs for a New World was Brown’s first notable show, paving the way for classic stories we know and love today. Classified as a theatrical song cycle (a production composed only of loosely connected musical pieces without dialogue or ‘scenes’), Songs for a New World provides a fascinating insight into Brown’s development as an artist. Through Songs, we see Brown before his claim to fame, hearing his works before the influence of mainstream Broadway and his string of professional and critical accomplishments. Although there is no obvious common thread between songs, Jason Robert Brown connects these stories through what he calls, “the moment of decision”. In the original off-Broadway production, Brown and his collaborator, young director Daisy Prince (daughter of renowned Broadway producer and director Hal Prince), could only afford a small, 4-person cast. These four actors each portrayed multiple characters, every one of them coming to their own “moment of decision” and finding their voices in their worlds. To provide continuity for the show, Brown included several commentary songs to help the audience understand that each song was a new character to follow on their own journey. Every character you see has a battle they need to face, all coming down to the moments they create and the decisions they make. Whether they take flight, stand up to fight, or flee from their problems, we see the rewards and consequences of making a choice and how each choice changes us as human beings. In our production, the director chose to separate the commentary function from the character exploration. Instead of a cast of 4, we have a cast of 19. Four primary cast members act as “navigators,” singing all of the commentary songs and interacting with individual characters on their journeys. Our story follows these four Navigators and a host of Explorers, each at their own “moment of decision,” seeking a new world. Though some of our Explorers are dependent on their times, others are timeless and ever-present. We empathize with those who take the leap and face their fears and cringe with embarrassment at those who make the wrong decision. To make a choice is to be adventurous and to fail is to be human.
