Henry V program

RATED PG-13

NOV 13

DIRECTOR'S NOTES “…but pardon, gentles all, The flat upraised spirits that hath dared On this unworthy scaffold to bring forth So great an object...!” Shakespeare’s glorious play Henry V begins with a plea from an actor to forgive the players for not being able to fully show the exciting battles and opulent palaces of the story on their simple wooden stage. She woos them with the promise of an epic play if they will put on their “imaginary forces work” to see the things that cannot be shown. We are in an even poorer state than Shakespeare’s actors in this pandemic moment. They had the stark beauty of the giant Globe Theatre on which to tell their tale, and had each other and the audience to play with. Instead, we have actors working alone from their homes, playing to their cameras instead of each other, manipulated by digital media into screen-sized Zoom battlefields and castles, streaming into the palm of your hand. But we do share something with Shakespeare’s company. We have his words. And what words they are! Through them we have his thrilling story of politics, loyalty, religion, war and romance. Shakespeare is on our side, and I’ll put odds on him in a battle any day. We miss seeing you in our audiences at GTA. We promise to be back as soon as we can. Know that though we may only be virtually in the same room, in our hearts we are together. And when hearts and imaginations and great plays dance, there lives art. “Once more unto the breach, dear friends, once more!”

Elisa Carlson, Director

SYNOPSIS Our version of Henry V has been cut to a suitable Zoom-length of an hour and a half. Some characters and scenes have been omitted or combined. One of Shakespeare’s ten English “History Plays”, it was written in 1599 and portrays events that happened during the Hundred Years War. The Battle of Agincourt took place in 1415.

IN ENGLAND Two high-ranking clergy, Canterbury and Ely, discuss the danger of possible legislation that would cut the church’s income by half. To prevent this, they plan to encourage the new King Henry V to go to battle with France. They discuss how surprised they are that Henry, who was wild and undisciplined as a young man, is such a steady and wise King. Henry asks the Archbishop of Canterbury how strong his claim to the French throne is, and is given a strong argument in his favor. He then receives an insulting message from The Prince of France (called the “Dauphin”). With his noble advisors in agreement, Henry prepares for war. Before setting sail for France, Henry discovers a plot made against his life by noblemen he trusts.

IN FRANCE The French King receives ambassadors from England, but rejects Henry's claim to the crown. Henry and his troops take the walled French town of Harfleur. Knowing that marriage to Henry may be the outcome of England’s invasion, the French Princess Katherine begins to learn English with the help of her companion, Alice. The French King decides to send his full army into battle with Henry at Agincourt.

SYNOPSIS Although his troops are weak from battle and hunger, Henry rejects the French Herald's offer of ransom and the two armies prepare to fight.

THE BATTLE OF AGINCOURT The French, who greatly outnumber the English, are confident they will win easily. The night before the battle, Henry walks through his camp in disguise to find out how the soldiers are doing. He sees how weary and sure of defeat they are, and prays for guidance. The morning of the battle, Henry inspires his soldiers, who fight valiantly.

VICTORY Against all odds, England wins the battle. The aging French King agrees that Henry V will inherit his throne, and Katherine is to become his wife.
