2021-2022 Series Single Tickets On Sale October 1 September 20, 2021 – Charleston, SC – The Charleston Gaillard Center is thrilled to announce 2021-2022 Series single tickets are on sale Friday, October 1 at 11am for three performances: The Knights with Aaron Diehl; Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater; Mark Morris Dance Group’s Pepperland. Driven by an open-minded spirit of camaraderie and exploration, they inspire listeners with vibrant programs that encompass their roots in the classical tradition and passion for artistic discovery. The orchestra has been proud to tour and record with renowned soloists including Yo-Yo Ma, Dawn Upshaw, Béla Fleck, and Gil Shaham, and has performed at such prestigious institutions as Carnegie Hall, Tanglewood, and the Vienna Musikverein. Through adventurous programming, unbridled energy, and a collaborative music-making process, The Knights bring classical music to life in a way that surprises and inspires both new and longtime listeners.

Since their inception in New York City in the early 2000s, The Knights have challenged assumptions about orchestral music. The ensemble grew out of informal chamber music readings at the home of brothers Eric and Colin Jacobsen — now the group’s Artistic Directors — and was incorporated as a non-profit organization in 2007. The 36 members of The Knights are graduates of the Juilliard School, the Curtis Institute of Music, and other leading music schools and conservatories. They are accomplished soloists, orchestral players, and chamber

musicians as well as composers, singer-songwriters, and improvisers who bring a range of cultural influences to the group.

Pianist and composer Aaron Diehl transforms the piano into an orchestral vessel in the spirit of beloved predecessors Ahmad Jamal, Erroll Garner and Jelly Roll Morton.

Following three critically-acclaimed leader albums on Mack Avenue Records — and appearances at such historic venues as Jazz at Lincoln Center, The Village Vanguard and New York Philharmonic — the American Pianist Association’s 2011 Cole Porter fellow now focuses his attention on his forthcoming solo album and ongoing curation of Black American composers programming with emphasis on William Grant Still. A Juilliard graduate, Aaron has performed with Wynton Marsalis, Benny Golson, Jimmy Heath, Branford Marsalis, Philip Glass and GRAMMY award-winning artist Cecile McLorin Salvant. He recently appeared with the New York Philharmonic and the Cleveland Orchestra as featured soloist.

ALVIN AILEY AMERICAN DANCE THEATER FEBRUARY 15 & 16, 2022 | 7:30PM Truly great dance can be a window to the heart and soul, revealing our deepest selves. Let the artists of Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater take you on a path of discovery using the universal language of dance as a medium for honoring the past, celebrating the present and fearlessly reaching into the future. Marking a decade of leading the Company forward, Artistic Director Robert Battle will present Ailey’s renowned dancers in a mixed repertory program that will feature new and classic works, including the beloved Ailey masterpiece Revelations. Using African American spirituals, song-sermons, gospel songs and holy blues, Revelations fervently explores the places of grief and holiest joy in the soul. Whether you’ve seen Ailey before or this is your first experience, you’re sure to discover something new.

Founded in 1958, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater is recognized by US Congressional resolution as a vital American “Cultural Ambassador to the World”.

MARK MORRIS DANCE GROUP’S PEPPERLAND April 10, 2022 |7:30PM “...a truly joyous, celebratory work of art… a brilliant homage to one of the great rock albums.”

At the other are the scintillating abstract inventions with which the deceptively simple opening to With a Little Help from My Friends builds to an asteroid-burst of meticulous timed, explosively complex patterns of dance.”

- The Guardian Mark Morris, praised as “the most successful and influential choreographer alive, and indisputably the most musical” (New York Times) comes to Charleston with Pepperland, a unique tribute to the 50th Anniversary of The Beatles’ groundbreaking album Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, accompanied live by an unprecedented chamber music ensemble of voice, soprano saxophone, two keyboards, theremin, and percussion. Ethan Iverson’s original score intermingles arrangements of the songs “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band”, “With a Little Help From My Friends”, “A Day in the Life”, “When I’m Sixty-Four”, “Within You Without You”, and “Penny Lane” with six Pepper-inspired original pieces intended especially for Morris’ profound understanding of classical forms: Allegro, Scherzo, Adagio, and the blues.

This is a must-see for dance and Beatles fans alike.
