WELCOME TO OUR 2018-2019 SEASON'S

FALL PROGRAM We are thrilled to begin our new season featuring a variety of outstanding performances.

As we enter our fourth season since the renovated and transformed Charleston Gaillard Center reopened, we continue to strive toward the inspired vision of Martha Rivers Ingram, the Honorable Mayor Joe Riley, Jr., and the Charleston City Council.

Building on the foundation established by the countless individuals who gave to the capital campaign led by The Gaillard Performance Hall Foundation, we provide a special place featuring world-class performances and educational outreach for every citizen of the Lowcountry. The Gaillard Center team of talented and enthusiastic employees and volunteers work each day to make your experience exceptional.

The Charleston Gaillard Center's Education Initiative has provided arts education to over 75,000 Lowcountry students both at the Gaillard Center and in 130+ classrooms in the Lowcountry since our reopening three years ago. Our Education Initiative brings to life a magical world. Students explore their imaginations, stretch their limits, and learn through innovative programs, school-series shows, incredible teaching artists, and inschool programs designed to complement the state curriculum. Our 2018-2019 efforts will continue to support our region’s standards with a focus on improving reading skills.

The Charleston Gaillard Center is proud to present Prints in Clay: A Visual Exhibit, a photography exhibition comprised of the work of photographers from The South Carolina Picture Project, the Art Institute of Charleston, and the College of Charleston.

The visual exhibit is comprised of a collection of photographs curated in support of the Slave Dwelling Project, a non-profit organization whose mission is to identify and assist in preserving extant slave dwellings. The visual exhibit tells the story of the Slave Dwelling Project, with a selection of photographs highlighting the historic dwellings, in various states of preservation, and glimpses into the educational programs that are the core of the Project itself.

A special artistic exhibit by Dontre Major, College of Charleston studio art alumnus, and artist in the College of Charleston’s 33rd Annual Juried Student Exhibition, will be in residence beginning with the Prints in Clay Program and throughout the season in the Martha and John M. Rivers Performance Hall.

BEYOND THE BIG HOUSE TOUR Step inside the back buildings and former work lots of Charleston’s private houses during the second annual Beyond the Big House Tour. Kitchens, carriage houses, slave dwellings and even churches where the enslaved worshiped have survived to tell the stories of African Americans in early Charleston, their lives, and immense contributions to the fabric of our city.

In addition to private sites rarely open to the public, Historic Charleston Foundation’s AikenRhett House lot and outbuildings, c.1820, which have been preserved as found, are included on the tour. The property survives as one of the best-preserved collections of 19th-century domestic buildings in the nation, and the expansive back lot includes slave quarters above the kitchen, laundry and carriage buildings.

PRINTS IN CLAY: THE FOOD OF THE AFRICAN DIASPORA, CURATED BY DR. JESSICA HARRIS This unique culinary event celebrates the contributions of African-American culture to Lowcountry cuisine, curated by Dr. Jessica B. Harris. The dinner features a three-course meal, designed by Dr. Harris, highlighting the cuisine of the African Diaspora. The meal blends context with cuisine. Commentary by Dr. Harris will present some of the ingredients used by cooks of the mid-eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.

SLAVE DWELLING PROJECT The Slave Dwelling Project’s mission is to identify and assist property owners, government agencies and organizations in preserving extant slave dwellings. The organization identifies preservation resources and assists communities to mitigate the possibility of demolition of local existing slave dwellings. Joe McGill, founder of the Slave Dwelling Project, is a Civil War Reenactor (54th Massachusetts Regiment) and a descendant of enslaved people. Visit slavedwellingproject.org for more information.

A SPIRITUALS CELEBRATION FEATURING TWO ORIGINAL WORKS While spirituals will be the primary musical focus of tonight’s concert, we will celebrate by offering new treatments on classics such as “Motherless Child,” “Nobody Knows the Trouble I’ve Seen,” and “Deep River” to name a few. The music will be performed in the varying styles of the classical, gospel, and jazz genres. There will be pieces by Ravel and Mahler as well to round off tonight’s performance. Lowcountry Voices, led by Director Nathan Nelson, will lend their blessed voices in tonight’s presentation by performing a few of their signature pieces as well as the new compositions.

In celebration of the Slave Dwelling Project Prints In Clay we present, along with several compositions by Wycliffe Gordon, we give you the world premier of two new works entitled “Still, We Rise!” and “He Heard My Cry.” Commissioned by the Charleston Gaillard Center, this music will serve to tell the untold stories of our ancestors, adults and children, who lived through the horrible conditions of slavery. It will be followed by Gordon’s reworking of a celebratory band composition entitled “We’re Still Here!/He’s Alright” to complete the storytelling of these lost souls of the past that lived in this weary land and their heroic perseverance through these troubling times.

Bill Burr is an American comedian or a comedian from the North American Union, depending on when you read this. He grew up outside of Boston, Massachusetts and did fairly poorly in school, despite the fact that he applied himself. Having first gained notoriety for his recurring role on the second season of Chappelle’s Show, Bill developed a comedic style of uninformed logic that has made him a regular with Conan O’Brien and Jimmy Fallon. Bill is against organized religion and believes we should go back to the gold standard for our currency. None of his opinions are based on any sort of reliable information. He tends to go with his first thought because reading makes him sleepy.

Reese Witherspoon, award-winning actress and producer, has created the kinds of unforgettable characters that connect with critics and audiences alike. She won an Academy Award® for her portrayal of June Carter Cash in Walk the Line and was later nominated in that same category for Wild in 2014, which she also produced. Her role in Wild also garnered Golden Globes, SAG, Critics’ Choice, and BAFTA Awards nominations. Other film credits include Sweet Home Alabama, Legally Blonde, and Election. She has executive produced and starred in two seasons of HBO’s critically acclaimed Big Little Lies, with the first season winning eight Emmy Awards, four Golden Globes, four Critics’ Choice Awards, and two SAG Awards. In 2015, she launched Draper James, a retail brand with a focus on fashion, accessories, and home décor inspired by the American South. In 2016, she established Hello Sunshine, a media brand and content company dedicated to female authorship and storytelling across all platforms. She is an advocate and activist for women’s issues across the globe. Whiskey in a Teacup is her first book.

Emmy® and Tony Award® winning actress and singer Kristin Chenoweth’s career spans film, television, voiceover and stage. She received an Emmy Award for Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for her role in “Pushing Daisies”, won a Tony Award for “You’re A Good Man, Charlie Brown” and was also nominated for her original role of Glinda the Good Witch in the Broadway smash-hit “Wicked.”

Chenoweth recently starred in the second season of NBC’s hit comedy series “Trial & Error,” receiving critical acclaim for her performance as Heiress Lavinia PeckFoster. Chenoweth has released multiple albums, most recently including The Art of Elegance, and has performed to sold-out audiences across the world.

Outside of her work in the arts, Kristin remains a passionate supporter of charities which dedicate their time and efforts to helping those in need, including the Broken Arrow Performing Arts Center Foundation in her home state of Oklahoma. In a labor of love, Kristin partnered with the Broken Arrow Performing Arts Center Foundation to launch an annual Broadway Bootcamp, providing young Broadway hopefuls with the opportunity to take classes, hold performances and learn from mentors in the field.

Izzard can currently be seen co-starring opposite Judi Dench as her son Bertie, the King in waiting in the critically acclaimed film, Victoria and Abdul.

Izzard’s first book, Believe Me, was released on June 13, 2017 and is a New York Times Best Seller. Writing with the same candor and insight evident in his comedy, he reflects on a childhood marked by the loss of his mother, boarding school, and alternative sexuality, as well as a life in comedy, film, politics, running, and philanthropy. Born in modern day Lvov, Poland, Emanuel Ax moved to Winnipeg, Canada, with his family when he was a young boy. He is a winner of the Young Concert Artists Award, Arthur Rubinstein International Piano Competition, Michaels Award and the Avery Fisher Prize.

In partnership with colleagues Leonidas Kavakos and Yo-Yo Ma, he begins the current season with concerts in Vienna, Paris and London with the trios of Brahms recently released by SONY Classical. In the US he returns to the orchestras in Cleveland, Chicago, New York, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Minneapolis, Washington, Detroit, Pittsburgh, Nashville and Portland, OR, and to Carnegie Hall for a recital to conclude the season. In Europe he can be heard in Munich, Amsterdam, Berlin, Rome, Vienna, London, and on tour with the Budapest Festival Orchestra in Italy.

Texas gentlemen, Lyle Lovett and Robert Earl Keen, join forces for an up-closeand-personal concert. Just two old friends swapping songs on acoustic guitars like they used to do on Keen’s front porch in College Station, Texas, when they co-wrote “The Front Porch Song,” which both artists later recorded on their respective debut albums.

Since then, they have recorded nearly 30 albums between their two careers.

It all took off for Keb’ Mo’ in 1994 with the self-titled release under his newly coined Keb’ Mo’ moniker, and over the years, he has proven that he is a musical force that defies typical genre labels. Album after album, 14 in total, garnered him 4 GRAMMY awards and a producer/ engineer/artist GRAMMY Certificate for his track on the 2001 Country Album of the Year, Hank Williams Tribute – Timeless. He has received 11 GRAMMY nominations, in total, including Country Song of the Year for “I Hope,” co-written with The Dixie Chicks, and 3 alone for his 2014 self-produced release, BLUESAmericana including Americana Album of the Year. Keb’ has also been awarded 11 Blues Foundation Awards and 6 BMI Awards for his work in TV & Film.

Additionally, Keb’ is a celebrity mentor with the Kennedy Center’s Turnaround Arts program, which focuses on elementary and middle schools throughout the US. This highly successful program began under the guidance of Michelle Obama and the President’s Committee for the Arts and Humanities. Each artist adopts an underperforming school and becomes a mentor, working with teachers, students, parents and the community to help build a successful arts education program.

In 2006, the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra collaborated with Ghanaian drum collective Odadaa!, led by Yacub Addy, to perform CongoSquare, a composition Mr. Marsalis and Mr. Addy co-wrote and dedicated to Mr. Marsalis’ native New Orleans. For more information, visit jazz.org. Wynton Marsalis (Trumpet) is the managing and artistic director of Jazz at Lincoln Center and a world-renowned trumpeter and composer. Born in New Orleans, Louisiana in 1961, Marsalis began his classical training on trumpet at age 12, entered The Juilliard School at age 17, and then joined Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers. He made his recording debut as a leader in 1982, and has since recorded more than 60 jazz and classical recordings, which have won him nine Grammy Awards. In 1983 he became the first and only artist to win both classical and jazz Grammys in the same year and repeated this feat in 1984. Marsalis is also an internationally respected teacher and spokesman for music education, and has received honorary doctorates from dozens of U.S. universities and colleges. He has written six books; his most recent are Squeak, Rumble, Whomp! Whomp!

Whomp!, illustrated by Paul Rogers and published by Candlewick Press in 2012, and Moving to Higher Ground: How Jazz Can Change Your Life with Geoffrey C. Ward, published by Random House in 2008. In 1997 Marsalis became the first jazz artist to be awarded the prestigious Pulitzer Prize in music for his oratorio Blood on the Fields, which was commissioned by Jazz at Lincoln Center. In 2001 he was appointed Messenger of Peace by Mr. Kofi Annan, SecretaryGeneral of the United Nations, and he has also been designated cultural ambassador to the United States of America by the U.S. State Department through their Culture Connect program. Marsalis was instrumental in the Higher Ground Hurricane Relief concert, produced by Jazz at Lincoln Center.

The event raised more than $3 million for the Higher Ground Relief Fund to benefit the musicians, music industry-related enterprises, and other individuals and entities from the areas in Greater New Orleans who were affected by Hurricane Katrina. Marsalis helped lead the effort to construct Jazz at Lincoln Center’s home—Frederick P. Rose Hall—the first education, performance, and broadcast facility devoted to jazz, which opened in October 2004.

VIENNA BOYS CHOIR 7 pm

CHRISTMAS IN VIENNA The Vienna Boys Choir, renowned as one of the finest vocal ensembles in the world for over five centuries, was formally established at Vienna’s Imperial Chapel in 1498 by Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian I. The many incarnations of the group have been performing continuously ever since. Today’s Vienna Boys Choir is comprised of talented young singers from all over the world who are admitted by audition. The enormously popular chorus is actually comprised of four separate ensembles of boys between the ages of 10 and 14 at the Vienna Boys Choir school at any given time.

All choir boys live in the choir’s well-appointed boarding school, with two to three boys sharing a room.

In 2010, the choir launched a new high school, for boys and girls grades 8 through 12. The school’s unique curriculum was developed in conjunction with the Universities of Music in Vienna and in Salzburg; it is designed to help young singers find their voice, discover and develop their talents, and prepare for university.

Roughly a quarter of the school’s alumni go on to become professional musicians, conductors, singers or instrumentalists.

Almost all continue to sing. There are two adult vocal ensembles made up entirely of former choristers - the Chorus Viennensis, and the Imperial Chapel’s Schola Cantorum, which specializes in Gregorian chant.
