Charleston Gaillard Center Announces Second Set of Lowcountry Listens Performances July 22 through August 19

J​uly 15, 2020 – Charleston, SC – The ​Charleston Gaillard Center ​is thrilled to announce the continuation of our ​Lowcountry Listens ​program with five new performances. Beginning July 22, the free, virtual music series will air online for five weeks. Each performance is recorded in the Martha and John M. Rivers Performance Hall and features four to five songs. Viewers can tune into each performance on Wednesdays at 6pm on gaillardcenter.org, on Facebook Live, and on YouTube Live. The 25-30 minute videos will remain online for viewers to enjoy at their leisure.

Richard Todd​, host of “The Morning Buzz” on 105.5 The Bridge, will introduce each performance. The Gaillard Center will have a Lowcountry Listens poster, featuring art by ​Sarah White​, available for purchase.

ABOUT ADMIRAL RADIO: Inspired by the prior-life of their old wooden radio, Admiral Radio creates a unique sound that people can gather 'round to - one that is deeply rooted in traditional folk style, but also has the

ability to touch the heartstrings of modern-day listeners. Becca and Coty met in 2014 and are both graduates of the College of Charleston where they studied world languages. The couple recently got married in early 2020. Becca released her debut solo album ‘I-26’ in 2018 for which she was voted Singer-Songwriter of the year by the Charleston City Paper. The duo is taking their new folk project seriously, having played 200+ shows within the last year at venues all along the east coast. Their debut album ‘Sounds Like You’ which they co-produced with Todd Mathis will be released on Friday, August 7.

They will be accompanied by Steven Sandifer, local music veteran and accomplished touring musician with many acts, including Dangermuffin, The Biscuit Boys, and the Delvon Lamarr Organ Trio.

ABOUT NOAH JONES: Born and raised in Charleston, South Carolina, there was always a passion for music growing within. From starting band in 5th grade and learning the saxophone, to teaching the piano to himself throughout middle school, music seemed to be the common denominator in life. Noah is a proud alumnus of the Charleston County School of the Arts. There he was a member of the award winning SOA Jazz ensemble. It was there that piano became the instrument that he knew was for him. He now is currently working on his Bachelor's degree at the College of Charleston in Music performance. As of now Noah plays with the indie R&B soul outfit Little Bird. Noah continues to work with, play, and write with many of Charleston’s artists, in hopes to one day have a studio of his very own to offer an out to youth who wouldn't normally be able to have access to art of recording one's own music.

ABOUT SARAH WHITE: Born and raised in Charleston, South Carolina, Sarah White, known as “Swhitey”, received her BA in Studio Art from the College of Charleston in May of 2016. From that, she has continued to master her painting and drawing skills. Swhitey’s work has been displayed in a variety of galleries, venues, and markets all over South Carolina as well as New York City.

As an independent artist, Swhitey uses such expertise with oils, acrylics, and ink pen to create.

She is inspired by surfaces of light reflection, gemstones, costume jewelry, slimy objects, wet subjects, bizarre shapes, and busy lines. Her artistic process differs in rendering from still life, photographs, and imaginative ideas.

The artist’s compositions are busy, chaotic, and unique. Each shape and line play a part, in turn fulfilling some sort of purpose within the frame. This is a representation of the individuality of every human being. She explains, saying, “All of us exist within the bounds of earth with not one person nor purpose being the exact same. From this, I want to remind my audience of their worth, and how their version of self is a gift to be expressed and celebrated”.

ABOUT EMILY CURTIS: Emily Curtis, is a born and raised local to Charleston, described as a "soulful pop artist with a southern flair”. She began making waves with her guitar and soulful vocals in the Charleston, SC music scene in 2015. She has since released an EP, a steady stream of singles, and was voted runner-up for Charleston’s Best Female Vocalist 2020.

Some of her more prestigious show credits include opening for Parmalee, Drivin N Cryin, Ken and Drew of Sister Hazel, and hometown favorites Hootie & The Blowfish.

November 2018 Neverland Songwriters Retreat in Costa Rica, founded by producers Adam McInnis and Sam Heights, with whom she is now working on music for TV and Film.

At the same time she began collaborating with producer/guitar player, Micah Nichols (NEEDTOBREATHE, Johnnyswim) to create her most recent singles “Ghost Stories” and “Stained Glass Windows” co-written with local singer/songwriter Matt Mackelcan.

As she continues growing and learning about the music industry, Emily Curtis is first and foremost on a mission to inspire hope and share her heart with her audience in a way that is both authentic and hopeful.

ABOUT MARCUS AMAKER: Marcus Amaker was named Charleston, SC’s first Poet Laureate in 2016. He’s also the award-winning graphic designer, an accomplished electronic musician, the creator of a poetry festival, and a mentor to hundreds of students. His poetry has been featured by PBS Newshour, SC Public Radio, Huffington Post, A&E Network, Charleston Magazine, and more. In 2019, he won a Governor’s Arts award. His poetry has been studied in classrooms across the country and has been interpreted for ballet, jazz, modern dance, opera and theater. ABOUT CHAQUIS MALIQ: EccentroSoul 1 Woman Band, Chaquis Maliq (Sha-Kees Mah-Leek), delivers the sound of Eccentric Tasteful Grooves and Honey Soul to her listeners. Chaquis Maliq transformed as an artist in 2011 when she decided to pick up the guitar. A long-time radio and TV personality in the Lowcountry, Richard Todd was born in Decatur, Alabama in 1965. He moved to SC in the early ’70s and has basically been in the Palmetto State ever since.
