This is a very exciting year in The Family Grapevine calendar! 15 years in Surrey - still successful and still holding true to the original ethos.

TFG has always focused on being a free local phonebook of services for families, concentrating on 0-18 years. A proportion of the entries give contact numbers for help and support in specialist areas, which can be difficult and time consuming to source for the average busy family. The line entries - and indeed the adverts - are sufficiently varied to encompass the wide needs of a modern family. For Nikki, Debbie and myself this is our full time work, not a hobby as some may suppose. It wraps around other things that take up our day to day lives, although sometimes it does seem as if there is no life outside Grapevine! We share the same values and not least, staying power.

And that’s why we are celebrating TFG’s 15 years with a brand new Surrey social website, combining our 4 areas and in our publications, offering readers 15 discount vouchers from a variety of businesses. And at this point I have to thank the extraordinary number of contacts who have ‘stayed’ with me through my Grapevine journey of 14 years. We have chatted through old jobs, new jobs, no jobs, new boyfriends/girlfriends, partners/ weddings, break-ups/make-ups, new babies, growing up children, illnesses and deaths...the spectrum of life. And another milestone in my life has just come to pass...my first born (gorgeous daughter) has fled the nest. So now that’s 2 out of 2 children and I’m waiting for the empty nest syndrom to kick in.

Just as well there hasn’t been a second of spare time to start wondering what I am going to do with my young-adult free time, but as this goes to print, she has only been gone 3 weeks.

And she is 4 hours travelling time closer to me than she was when she went off to university. That was quite hard (worry worry worry) and so I’m thinking this will be a piece of cake by comparison.

Now with the wisdom that a few more years brings, she is embarking on another new stage in her life. She’ll be fine. I’ll let you know about me in due course!

Why go to Nursery? {it’s not just play…} The perception of children “just” playing in the nurseries has dramatically changed over the last few years. It is no longer the case that children are simply ‘minded’ at nursery. On the contrary, it is now recognised how much children learn through their play and that this ‘play’ provides a strong foundation to build their future skills.

A well managed day nursery provides a positive transition from home to a more formal learning environment in many unseen ways. Children’s play and learning is guided by the Early Years Foundation Stage. This guidance document is used by all early year’s settings and assists staff in providing a stimulating and exciting environment where children are able to develop at their own pace.

All the rooms within a nursery offer the six main areas of learning as identified in the document. In a baby room it is unlikely that you will differentiate between these, although resources and activities throughout the week will reflect each of them. As children grow and develop they move rooms within the nursery. Each one is slightly more structured than the previous until reaching Pre School where areas of learning are clearly defined and children take a very active role in planning their play and learning. This gradual introduction offers children the opportunity to experiment and discover not just about various resources, but about themselves. It enables them to grow confidence in their own abilities within a secure and caring environment, thus equipping them for the move to the more structured learning environment they will find at school.
