The Mid Surrey Family Grapevine Area

At the time of going to print, we have had terrible weather conditions resulting in devastation of businesses and serious damage to homes across the country. It has always been important to support your community, whether it be the businesses, schools, clubs, or just being aware of who your neighbours are and whether they may need practical help or just a listening ear from time to time.

The conditions that many have found themselves in, has brought communities together and no doubt new friends have been made. It is British stoicism that shines through at times like this, so when the water receeds and things start to get back to some semblance of normality, let’s be sure to keep up that great spirit.

This year is going to be a very special one for me. My lovely daughter will marry her wonderful man, at an idyllic location which has sentimental connection for our family. And also of great excitement, her brother will join us from overseas - we haven’t seen him for over 4 years. One of his first ‘jobs’ will be to meet his prospective brother-in-law for the first time and I have no doubt they’ll have some fun. It will be a hugely exciting time and I can’t wait! There will be one more Grapevine before the big day - the time will just fly by.

● On my Soapbox - most of us like to express our views and inevitably some have more strident opinions than others. By virtue of this job I have the privilage of being able to talk with a cross section of people. It is clear that advancing age is great as a vehicle for thoughtful reflection. We reminisce on how we were brought up and the lessons we have learnt, good, bad or indifferent. Childhood experiences shape us in life and we in turn shape the actions of our children.

What do you feel has changed since you were a child, to the extent that your actions with your children are quite different to those of your parents?

We are proposing to establish a specialist free school in Elmbridge, dedicated specifically to the education of children aged between 7 and 16 who have high functioning autism spectrum disorders (ASD) and related conditions, but whose needs are currently not being met by publicly funded institutions in Elmbridge.

Our firm belief is that such children need ASD-specific teaching methods throughout their school career if their life chances are to be improved. We would therefore create an autism-focused school environment, where our team of specialist staff would help each child to understand and develop his or her capabilities. We would therefore build on the child’s self esteem and create a healthy sense of selfworth, so that he or she can fulfil their potential and lead an independent and successful adult life.

The curriculum will be specifically designed to meet the needs of pupils with higher functioning ASD and related disorders, with a view to facilitating access to the National Curriculum. It will be designed to include vocational subjects and individual learning programmes which will run in conjunction with the core subjects. Social communication, behaviour and cognition will be embedded into the curriculum and there will be a strong theraputic input throughout the school day.

How to make: First you will need to bake some cupcakes. Any recipe will suffice, though if you are nervous about baking you can buy some ready made.

When ready coat the cupcakes with the white vanilla frosting or some thick sticky icing.

As soon as you are finished cover the cupcakes in mini marshmallows.

Once they are completely covered you may want to pop them somewhere cool to set for a few minutes, before you stick on the faces for your sheep.

To make the faces you can draw some eyes onto a chocolate button with white icing and then stick these to the cupcakes with a little dap of icing between the button and marshmallows. Alternatively you could make each of the faces using chocolate icing, by piping it directly onto the marshmallow wool of the cupcakes, this will result in a more individual look to your sheep.

You might want to experiment piping the faces a few times on to some grease proof paper, before icing onto the cupcakes.

Once iced leave again to cool so that they can set properly.
