and with his hand his dad waves back. Opening the door he joins him inside and says: “Hi dad.” The door slams shut. They kiss each other on the cheek and they’re talking. The author can’t make out what it is that they’re saying so she tries a lip-reading technique but since they have their backs to her she can’t understand a thing. The dad is giving him a piece of paper which she supposes is a list. Leaving the store the son trips on the curb and the author can feel it because his face shows pain when his foot gets stuck in a hole.
