An Interstitial Journal of the Americas

EDITOR’S NOTE I​ n an email describing his project Crossings, Jason Mena writes, “(...) I did this action of walking across all these streets with the names of Latin American countries and used my body as a metaphor for my absent country and the streets as a metaphor for the imaginary borders between countries.”

Dolce Stil Criollo similarly embodies this absence, existing within the liminality of the differing cultural, linguistic and aesthetic factors of each of its contributors. And yet, in editing the journal’s first volume I came across a fragmented theme.

The theme of Islands, in no way totalizing, opened up an intermediary space capable of subsuming but not dissolving differences. Like Peter Brock’s Water Paintings, an island becomes ephemeral and inasmuch existing within the city as being of another nature than it. Its substantive opposition is what also situates Fernanda Laguna when she writes, “I believe in the power of a mind that can transform, transport, and dematerialize objects.”

An island, according to Mirene Arsanios, is a place for the reader and Ciro Miguel’s Hotel project for an island suggests that the island is its own lodging, the double of itself, slyly reflexive as a selfcontained, autonomous unit still delineated by its surrounding context. That context, serving as a metaphor for this volume, was a pre-condition for encountering the theme of Islands. Or maybe not.

The journal itself floated to the island, lost within the interstices of its own imagined borders.

Hay tres temas; el amor, la muerte y las islas. Desde que el hombre existe, ese sentimiento, ese temor, esas presencias lo han acompañado siempre. Traten otros los dos primeros. Yo me ocupo de las islas, que son mejores que los hombres, pero no que las mujeres. Hace años tuve la idea de reunir una antología universal de la isla. La sigo teniendo. Sin embargo, pronto me di cuenta de que era una empresa prácticamente infinita. La isla invade todas las literaturas y, claro, donde uno pone el ojo encuentra la isla.

​* * Al igual que Borges cuando evoca la figura de Horacio, “el más misterioso de los poetas”, yo también compruebo no sin cierto desconsuelo que todas las cosas me llevan a una cita o a un libro, a esa isla del tigre que habitamos sus lectores y que es al mismo tiempo la más poblada y la más solitaria, la isla más animada y la isla más triste del mundo.

** En una conferencia que pronunció en 1904, el geopolítico inglés sir Halford Mackinder desarrolló la teoría de Eurasia como el pivote geográfico de la historia, un inmenso pedazo de tierra inaccesible al poder marítimo y, por tanto, un área en donde sería posible constituir un invencible e intocable poder terrestre.

Posteriormente se le denominó Heartland, noción que dio origen a la ley según la cual “quien es dueño del Corazón Mundial, puede hacerse dueño de la Isla Mundial (Europa, África y Asia).

Y quien es dueño de la Isla Mundial, puede ser el dueño del mundo”.

Para cortar de tajo los fríos de un cierto invierno cuyos efectos comenzaban a inflamar mi propio descontento, sin pensarlo demasiado abordé un avión con destino a San Juan de Puerto Rico.

Un par de horas después respiraba a fondo los inconfundibles aires del Caribe. Mi propósito era alcanzar el fuerte de San Felipe del Morro, punto desde el cual la vista del mar es inigualable, curativa de casi cualquier afectación.

En la calle O’Donnell, en las inmediaciones del casco histórico de la ciudad, me topé con una pequeña librería.

Sin pensarlo dos veces, recaí en el vicio de no dejar pasar una sola que se cruce en mi camino.

Me metí a ver libros. Momentos después, tenía entre las manos estos versos provenientes de un poema de César Vallejo:

“Lúgubre isla me alumbrará continental, mientras el capitolio se apoye en mi íntimo derrumbe y la asamblea en lanzas clausure mi desfile.”

A la fecha, sigo creyendo que ese día, ese avión, esa tarde, esa caminata, ese Maelström barriéndolo todo a su paso, esos minutos eternos, esa eternidad de Angst corroyendo mis murallas, esa cadena retráctil de momentos sucesivos, los mil adjetivos, eso todo que es mi vida, me llevaron hasta el punto en que cogí ese libro para que al fin volviera sobre mis pasos y buscara el camino que lleva de regreso al continente.​

** Ni hoy ni ayer he estado muy original. Escucho en mi sala la clásica canción de Simon & Garfunkel cuya evidente conclusión es “I am an island”.

Tengo, dice el dueto de robinsones en 1965, mis libros y mi poesía para protegerme; escondido en mi cuarto, a salvo en mi propio claustro. No toco a nadie ni nadie me toca. Una piedra no siente dolor; y una isla no llora nunca.

Una canción que me gusta pero en la que no creo ni quisiera creer. Las islas lloran y se hacen preguntas perturbadoras e incómodas, escabrosas como un desordenado montón de piedras. Por ejemplo el escritor Germán Yanke, autor de un libro extrañísimo de prosas insulares y bastardas titulado Ciudad sumergida: “Leo y leo. Bilbao está ahí fuera. ¿Dónde vivo realmente?” ¿Y tú, y yo: dónde vivimos realmente?

There exist three themes: love, death and islands. From earliest times, this sentiment, that fear and those distant forms have always accompanied us. Others address the first two themes.

I busy myself only with the topic of islands, which are better than men, but not women. Some years ago, I had the idea of composing a universal anthology of islands. I still intend to do so; however, I soon learned that it was quite nearly an infinite task. The island invades all of literature…it’s clear that wherever one glances, one makes out an island.

​* * I​ n the same manner that Borges alludes to Horace as the “most mysterious of poets,” I admit with despair that everything impels me to quote from the conversations of Borges, and from his works, a Tiger’s island which we, his readers, all inhabit, and which is simultaneously the most populated and the most desolate, the most vivid, as well as the saddest island in the world.

** During a lecture delivered in 1904, the British scholar of geopolitics, Sir Halford Mackinder, unveiled the theory of Eurasia as the key geographic component of history: an immense stretch of land inaccessible to invasion via the sea and, as a result, an area in which it would be possible to build an invincible and unassailable inland power. This area he later named the Heartland, a notion which gave birth to the law stating that he who rules the Heartland commands the WorldIsland; he who rules the World-Island rules the world.

Without too much thought, I boarded a plane headed for San Juan, Puerto Rico; this was in order to cut clean from my deepening malaise the chill of a particular winter. ​A few hours later, I was breathing the warm and unmistakable Caribbean air. I intended to make the hike to the fortress San Felipe del Morro, a site from which the seascape is unparalleled and serves an antidote to any type of affectation. ​I browsed through the aisles. Shortly thereafter, I had in my hands the following lines belonging to a poem by César Vallejo:

To this date, I still believe that that day, that flight, that afternoon, that stroll, that maelstrom sweeping aside everything in its path, those eternal minutes, that eternity of angst eroding my ramparts, this retractable chain of events, the myriad adjectives, that everything which is my life, carried me to that moment in which I picked up that collection so that, at last, I could backtrack my steps, and reach the road that travels back through time from the island to the mainland.

** I​ have never been very original, today or in the past. In my room, I listen to Simon & Garfunkel’s classic refrain whose wellknown ending is “I am an island.” ​I have—or so claims that Robinsonian duet in 1965—my books and my poetry to protect me hidden away in my room, safe in a cloister of my own making. I touch no one and no one touches me. A stone feels no pain, and an island never cries. ​So goes that song which I value but can’t believe (nor would want to). Islands cry and they ask themselves disturbing and uncomfortable questions jagged like rocks heaped together in a pile. Take for example the case of writer Germán Yanke, author of a volume with odd and bastard prose texts entitled Submerged City: “I read and read. Bilbao is there, outside.

Where do I really live?” ​And yourself, myself: Where do we really live?

I give myself over to whatever is most pleasurable and constantly try to convince myself that my body isn’t a weapon, that my movements and identifiable feelings are light music.

I desire to be what I am but stronger, more committed.

I feel drops in my eyes and they’re not imagined poetry.

Good people and bad people are all beautiful or the same.

To nature everything is the same its scale is concentrated.

You can accidentally encounter life going from A to B on a train being a testament of the collapse of others avoiding the problem (or eliminating it like every tyrant eradicating what’s foreign).

Puedo encontrar la vida por accidente yendo de B a A sobre un tren sin siquiera pensar que todo lo que está entre esos extremos es el tren y que casa no es llegar ni durar: casa es yo, aquí y ahora.

Podemos encontrar la vida por accidente simplemente hablando de lo extraño de la vida, de dios, del amor, de la infancia.

Bill, Phil, Don o Bob, como piezas intercambiables, entran y salen de los films en extraña calma siempre con la misma expresión en el rostro, que de tan igual roza la perfección.

La vida es tan Bill Murray.

Quizás sea por eso que él ya no necesite actuar.

He hopes, downtrodden, waking always to the same day, receiving rosy signals or getting lost in a faraway land where tedium rules.

Bill, Phil, Don or Bob, like interchangeable pieces, enter and exit the films always with strange calm with the same expression on the face, that very closely borders perfection.

Life is so Bill Murray.

Maybe that’s why he no longer needs to act.

LA SOUFRIÈRE On the island there is a reader, someone peeling bananas and feeding off written history, a former self, a woman who isn’t a mother, a Nigerian masseur having studied with a Russian masseuse. We all do things. Some wait for the volcano to explode like a volcano exploded in Martinique in nineteen-oh-two or in nineteen- twenty. Others predict the rain. There is a tourist who repairs objects garnered before traveling. The last thing he repaired was an umbrella with a wooden handle he elter exchanged for the right word. There is a specialist in door hinges and Stefanie.

Begin by asking if we should turn the lights on or if the lights should be turned on, knowing that a question is a sexually ridden conundrum with a single shore, the see- shore. I can’t see the point in expanding subjecthood with affirmations if an eye is an eye.

That question tickles my inner stomach when the rain is light. With my eyes I can see the world from the perspective of a dog and the word in the form of recorded footage. It shows that the explosion occurred in two- thousand-andtwenty, in May. I wish I had left.

They all left. The fumes spewed out of their will. Fifteen children without a single father I believe. The father was poor; he got stuck there out of belief and out of a job. With money, he would have followed the filmmaker Werner Herzog who decided to document the explosion a few hours before it didn’t occur. A failed natural phenomenon is a working wristwatch.

I believe in economy, ventriloquism and race. I believe in the left like in the ones who left, in the plural of a cow, colors, red and blue, the law and its distribution in space. I believe that too is three letters and letters can occupy a hyphen which is the side of history we want to be on. Everything I say was said in Martinique in nineteen-twenty. The only survivor was a bad man, the worst on the island. Because of his dire behavior he was moved to an underground cell. He survived the explosion with lesions on his back.

As a communist masseuse, I was appalled by the absence of bodies. I had lost my job to a geological oddity, which is nothing less than an ideology.

Creating links you create links now that I think of it. Over that mountain’s caldera was a communist café that used magma to roast edible roots.

Drinking our roots freed us of ambitions: we all sat on a stone remembering how unreliable the present is when you consider the past like a fetish or a shelter for sex. Dialectic had finally acknowledged its own waste… But I still own a donkey! Which I’m trying to sell to Herzog but he is invariably late while returning.

While the mountain’s mouth collapses, I repair objects so that words can get better.

What objects do you repair for the word “history”?

Single-word objects, an umbrella, a camera, comma.

You forgot that the volcano didn’t explode and THAT was a geological oddity.

It didn’t explode. It left us with two ends each. We might even be rich and leave now!

Syntactically and otherwise, we can’t. We are poor until nineteen- oh-two when a dated thought appeared and I fell in love with it. I had the feeling of having understood before I realized that everybody was looking at me because my references were unintelligible at noon when I asked for white sugar.

In the communist café, there was a guy with disheveled hair, drinking beer and smokes. LA SOUFRIÈRE En la isla hay un lector, alguien pelando platanos y aprevechandose de la historia escrita, un yo anterior, una mujer que no es una madre, un masajista nigeriano que hubo estudiado con una masajista rusa. Todos hacemos cosas. Algunos esperan explote el volcán como un volcán que explotó en Martinica en mil novecientos dos o veinte. Otros predicen la lluvia. Hay un turista que arregla objetos conseguidos antes viajar. La última cosa que arregló fue un paraguas con un mango de madera que él elter-cambió por la palabra exacta. Hay un especialista en bisagras de puerta y Stephanie.

Empezar preguntando si debemos prender las luces o si las luces deben estar prendidas, sabiendo que una pregunta es un acertijo agobiado por una sexualidad con sólo una costa, y el entrever la costa. Creo en economía, ventriloquia y raza. Creo en la izquierda como a los que se fueron del rumbo, en el plural de vaca, colores, rojo y azul, la ley y su distribución por el espacio. Mientras la boca de la montaña se derrumba, arreglo objetos para que las palabras puedan mejorarse. ¿Qué objetos arreglarías para la palabra “historia?”

Objetos de una palabra, un paraguas, una cámara, una coma.

Olvidaste que el volcán no explotó y ESO fue una curiosidad geológica.

No explotó. Nos dejó a cada uno con dos finales. ¡Y podría ser que aún somos ricos y que ya nos vamos!

Sintácticamente y por lo demás, no podemos. Somos pobres hasta mil novecientos dos cuando un pensamiento anticuado apareció y me enamoré de éste. Tuve la sensación de haber entendido antes de que me diera cuenta de que todos me miraban porque mis referentes eran incomprensibles, al mediodía, cuando pedí azúcar refinada.

En el café comunista, había un tipo despeinado, tomando una cerveza y fumando cigarrillos. Como siguió fumando no se amargó tras filmar los vapores de la fábrica el día después de la ideología, toda vez que no hubo explotado el volcán. Siguió tomando y fumando café. Antes de morirse, fue filmado sentando en un banco en una isla desierta. No habló por razones técnicas pero a todos nos dio masajes con sus pensamientos.

Pero yo hablo de un padre y una isla que la ciencia abandonó. El hombre en la isla es un lector. Todos hacemos cosas pensando que no tiene razón esperar. Cuando uso una palabra, uso un objeto que ya no puedes ver porque éste se transforma en palabra, la cual no es un signo, sino un objeto para ser observado cuando pase, cuando llueva afuera.

El problema no es la lluvia sino los vapores. No tiene razón tener todos estos personajes si no los vas a usar.

Piensas eso porque eres un pendejo capitalista que cree que el vapor tiene una función, pero aun leer tiene una función. Fue usada por el aprendizaje, cuando las recetas no eran la suma de sus partes. ¿No hablas de clase, no?

No, hablo de Stefanie y la manera en que ella ve la belleza. Me sorprendió el silencio en su retrato cuando yo me sentaba en un café en Beirut en mil novecientos -ochenta y dos- después de que nací. Dijo que la libertad animal es la prerrogativa del mar, un zoológico sin una colección.

En un bosque volcánico, una voluntad cuesta la voluntad para apagar las luces y esperar. Esperar es una conspiración para un mente conspiracional mientras soy ese burro vagando por las calles de una isla desierta a punto de explotar.

Por la noche, cuando estoy sola en mi departamento, siento que hay gente invisible pero que hace ruido.

Suelo asustarme y tener pánico.

Miro y al hacerlo no veo a nadie.

Los veo con el punto más lateral del ojo hacia las sienes.

III Voy a escribir una novela realista. ¡Ya! ¡Sí, lo haré! Cueste lo que cueste. porque mi estilo corre el riesgo de repetirse y repetirse y aburrir y quedar atrapado en el mundo de la fantasía que es algo que no llego a entender.

Creo en ella a través de la fé que es no hacerse demasiadas preguntas.

Intentaré transformarlo ¡ya! Ahora.

En este preciso instante cambio.

Debo escribir una novela ¡ahora! realista, heterosexual y con argumento.

Apago la música para que no me haga volar de emoción.

Eso es lo que debo hacer y lo estoy haciendo.

Este es mi próximo paso escribir todo en tercera persona que es más compleja que la primera... porque la primera siento que es más fácil, es como escribir mi diario.

Es escribir lo que siento que es una fantasía porque mis sentimientos son muy poco precisos.

En tercera persona pero igual puedo meter cosas en el relato que viví yo.

Cosas de mi realidad que las llevo a una ficción que se parezca mucho a la realidad.

Los relatos son ficción por muchas cosas pero una de ellas es porque no son la realidad.

Quiero hacer un relato realista.

Oh... te invoco relato realista... y empiezo ¡ya!

Ella escribirá un relato realista, tomará ejemplos de la realidad que sean lo más “eso”, lo más cosa posible.

Un relato dónde no haya nada de elementos con significados dobles.

Cosas, imágenes, actitudes que tengan un poco de algo “común” y de “algo raro”.

Ella lo está haciendo ¡Ya! Por ejemplo, palabras que no están citará (ella me lo dijo) fantasma, sombra misteriosa, extraño, oculto, hada, brillante y fantástico.

Y tampoco nada de “Vírgenes”.

Escuchémosla...

Ella dice: “Las cosas serán de madera, de vidrio, de metal, de plástico y, dentro de las puertas, no habrá nada.

Si en la casa hay un perro solo, éste estará solo.

No hablará ni consigo mismo, no pensará, no hará nada que no haga un perro común”.

Ella dice: “A veces me pasaba que me ponía a analizar a la realidad de lo grande a lo pequeño o de lo pequeño a lo grande y sentía que lo irreal era mi pensamiento. Éste viajaba hacia las cosas y volvía destrozado.

Los pensamientos son como barcos en la bruma que se tiñen de cielo.

Barcos que no se pueden tocar pero en los que una está destinada a tener que creer.”

La autora está viendo a las naves en la cámara oscura de su mente y no sabe si la mente sea algo que deba poner en su nuevo relato.

La historia gira en torno a un personaje principal que vive solo en un departamento de Balbanera en un piso alto.

Soltero, 36 años, morocho, etc.

Trabaja en el local de su padre, la ferretería mas grande de toda la manzana.

Trabaja con un oberol azul, En éste momento lleva zapatos de cuero Grimoldi talle 41 y, como su enterito es corto se le ven las medias de color bordeaux.

No necesita viajar en colectivo, porque le queda, el trabajo, a la vuelta.

Ahora está llendo hacia allá a pie sobre sus Grimoldi 41.

Cruza la calle y el semáforo está en el hombrecito verde.

Como el semáforo le está dando tiempo él cree que puede hacerlo dos veces.

Llega a la vereda de enfrente y vuelve a la de donde salió para volver a cruzar.

Como no le queda mas tiempo para volver a hacerlo sigue caminando.

Está viendo una caca de perro y decide no pisarla.

Está haciendo un paso más largo que descompenza al siguiente entonces hace uno más pequeño.

Saluda con su mano a su papá que está adentro del local,

Abriendo la puerta se mete adentro también y le dice: “Hola papá”.

Se cierra la puerta de un golpe.

Se besan en la mejilla y se están hablando.

La autora no llega a escuchar lo que ellos dicen entonces utiliza la técnica de la lectura de labios pero como ellos están de costado no logra enterarse de nada.

El papá le está dando un papel que ella supone que es una lista.

El hijo saliendo del local pisa la vereda y puede sentirla ya que pone cara de dolor al meter el pie en un agujero.

Once I met a burglar who hit me and I loved him and then I hated him because he drove me crazy.

I feel myself slipping into that terrain.

Since I was a girl I’ve felt the presence of ghosts in the bathroom most of all, behind the shower curtain and in the closets.

During the day, I waited for night hidden in the armoire so they wouldn’t surprise me.

The air was warm in there, and dense like a hug.

The space impeded my movements, the darkness relaxed my eyes.

And I felt dizzy like I was floating among my sister’s skirts and jackets.

Outside, in some other part of the house was my mother with her two platters the one for love and the one for pain.

III I’m going to write a realist novel. Right now!

I’ll do it, I will! No matter what it takes.

Because my style runs the risk of repeating itself and repeating itself and being boring and getting stuck in the world of fantasy which is something I can’t seem to understand.

I believe in it through faith which means not asking oneself too many questions.

I’m going to try to change––right now! Now. In this very moment I change.

I should write a novel––now!

Realist, heterosexual, and with a plot.

I turn off the music to stop my emotions from flying all over.

That’s what I should do and I’m doing it.

This is my first shot trying to write in third-person only which is more complicated than first... because first-person I feel is easier to do, it’s like writing in my diary.

It’s writing what I feel which is a fantasy because my feelings aren’t very well-defined.

In third-person, but I can still put things I’ve lived into the story.

Things from my reality that I bring to fiction so that they seem a lot like reality.

Stories are fiction for a lot of reasons but one of them is because they’re not reality.

I want to write a realist story.

Oh... realist story I summon you... and here I go!

She’ll write a realist story, she’ll take examples from reality that are the most “that,” as thing-like as they can be.

A story in which there isn’t a single element that has a double meaning.

Things, images, attitudes that have a little bit of of something “normal” and “something strange.”

She’s doing it. Right now!

For example, words she won’t mention (she told me so) ghost, mysterious shadow, strange, occult, fairy, shining, and fantastic.

And nothing about “Virgins” either.

She says: “Things will be made of wood, of glass, of metal, of plastic and there will be nothing behind the doors.

If there’s a dog alone in a house, he’ll be alone.

He won’t talk to himself, he won’t think, he won’t do anything that a normal dog wouldn’t do.”

Boats that can’t touch but in which one is destined to be required to believe.”

The author is looking at the ships in the camera obscura of her mind and doesn’t know if her mind is something she should put in her new story.

“I don’t know if the last thing I’ll tell you is a story a fiction or something that’s real.

The story revolves around a main character who lives alone on an upper floor in a building in Balvenera.

Bachelor, 36 years old, dark hair, etc.

He works in his father’s place, the biggest hardware store on the block.

He wears blue coveralls to work, today he’s wearing size 8 leather shoes made by Grimoldi and, since his jumpsuit is short you can see his burgundy socks.

He doesn’t need to travel by bus, because he works right around the corner.

Now he’s headed that way on foot with his size 8 Grimoldis.

He crosses the street and the traffic light is on the little green man.

Since the traffic light is giving him enough time he thinks he can cross two times.

He gets to the other sidewalk and goes back to the one he left in order to cross again.

Since he doesn’t have enough time to do it again he keeps walking.

He’s looking at dogshit and decides not to step in it.

He’s taking a longer step which throws off the next one so he takes a smaller step.

With his hand he waves to his dad who’s inside the store,

Opening the door he joins him inside and says: “Hi dad.”

The door slams shut.

They kiss each other on the cheek and they’re talking.

The author can’t make out what it is that they’re saying so she tries a lip-reading technique but since they have their backs to her she can’t understand a thing.

The dad is giving him a piece of paper which she supposes is a list.

Leaving the store the son trips on the curb and the author can feel it because his face shows pain when his foot gets stuck in a hole.

PETER BROCK was born in Washington DC, and spent his adolescence in the San Francisco Bay Area.

During those years, he often roamed the alleyways and train tracks admiring detritus. As an undergraduate, Peter studied economic and political development. At present, he lives and works in Brooklyn, NY.

English translations of her poems have appeared in The Bitter Oleander, Gargoyle, Harpur Palate, The Journal, and So to Speak, among others.

MIRENE ARSANIOS is a writer based in Beirut.

She holds a Masters in Contemporary Art Theory from Goldsmiths College and teaches at the American University of Beirut. In 2007, she co-founded the collective 98weeks research project.

Her writings have been published in Bidoun, Flash Art, Cura Magazine, The Rumpus and Ibraaz magazine.

GABRIEL FINOTTI is a Brazilian designer who graduated in Architecture and Urbanism in 2011 in Sao Paulo.

He is the founder of the multidisciplinary bureau Sometimes Always and has been working on a variety of cultural, arts and fashion projects across different medias. Gabriel is now based in London where he is finishing his MA in Publishing at London College of Communication.
