El Museo de Arte de Chelsea, sede de la Fundación Miotte se complace en dar la bienvenida a esta exposición individual de obras de Cristóbal Gabarrón. Para muchos norteamericanos, esta exposición será su primera visión en profundidad de la obra de este prolífico artista español que se ha distinguido por su amplio abanico creativo desde pintura y murales al arte público monumental y urbano o escultura. El arte de Gabarrón, que reposa en su contemplación de la figura, es profundamente humanista. Se plantea cuestiones del ser, del ser vivo, ambos en su propio cuerpo con todas sus visicitudes de sentir y de emocionarse, así como convivir en una sociedad de masas cuyo paradigma se convierte en una constricción contra la conformidad sin sentido y los mecanismos de la muerte.

Esta exposición ha sido comisariada por el reconocido investigador y crítico, Donald Kuspit. The Chelsea Art Museum, Home of the Miotte Foundation, is pleased to welcome this solo exhibition of the work of Cristóbal Gabarrón. For many American viewers, this exhibition will be their first in depth exposure to the work of this prolific Spanish artist who has distinguished himself in a variety of media – from painting and murals to public monuments and sculptures. Gabarrón’s art, grounded in his contemplation of the figure, is profoundly humanistic. It probes questions of being; of being alive both in one’s own body with all its vicissitudes of feeling and emotion and alive in a mass society which, in this paradigm, becomes a struggle against stultifying conformity and the mechanics of death.

The exhibition has been curated by renowned scholar and critic, Donald Kuspit. Kuspit has long championed an aesthetically significant art founded in spirituality and insight into human nature over what he considers the shallow, unreflective banality of much postmodern production. The Chelsea Art Museum International Program endeavors to build relationships between CAM and arts institutions around the world. This program coordinates a wide variety of initiatives aimed at facilitating cultural exchange with museums and other visual arts institutions. These

Cristóbal Gabarrón es natural de la ciudad mediterránea de Mula próxima a la capital murciana, aunque, antes bien, en términos artísticos podemos considerarlo hijo originario de aquella generación de españoles que se desprendieron con arrojo de su imaginario expresivo para que la historia del Arte Contemporáneo también tuviese un nombre propio en la España de la segunda etapa del siglo XX. Gabarrón estaba decidido a crecer y a ser creativo por lo que se dedicó a la pintura de forma ininterrumpida a partir de 1964 año en el que ofreció su primera muestra compuesta por cuadros figurativos influido principalmente por la naturaleza y el entorno rural de los campos de Castilla debido a su infancia vallisoletana; sin embargo, rápidamente evolucionó hacía la abstracción, pasando por la corriente informalista. Así, encontró

el camino en el que ha ido después ahondando hasta crear un estilo de pintura propio e inconfundible. “Si pusiéramos mi obra seguida desde el 65 hasta hoy”, dice Gabarrón, “podríamos observar una continuidad absoluta que la ha hecho reconocible”.

Su pintura, cargada de simbolismos, está llena de formas insinuantes que producen en nosotros la sensación de inquietud. Sus obras nos animan a tratar de descifrar un mensaje lleno de ambigüedades y dobles sentidos, que el pintor nos muestra en múltiples imágenes cargadas de provocación.

Sobre todo aquellas, que son las más en su obra, que tienen que ver con la figura humana, con el cuerpo en todos sus estados. Sus cuerpos quieren expresar pluralidad de ideas, variedad de estados emocionales, rau-

evolved towards abstraction, passing through the Informalist movement.

And so he found the path that he has explored more deeply ever since and created his own unmistakable style of painting. “If we were to set out all my work from 1965 to now,” Gabarrón says, “we would see an absolute continuity that makes it recognizable.”

His painting, fraught with symbolism, is full of insinuating forms that arouse a sense of uneasiness within us. His works encourage us to try to decipher a message steeped in ambiguities and doubles entendres, which the artist shows in a wealth of images brimming with provocation.

Especially the works that have to do with the human figure, with the body in all its states, which make up the greater part of his oeuvre. His bodies

Cristóbal Gabarrón is from the Mediterranean town of Mula, not far from the capital of Murcia, though in artistic terms we might consider him a product of that generation of Spaniards who boldly sloughed off their world of expressive imagery so that the history of contemporary art should also have a name of its own in Spain in the second part of the twentieth century.

Gabarrón was determined to grow and be creative, and so he devoted himself ceaselessly to painting from 1964 onwards. In that year he offered his first solo exhibition, consisting of figurative paintings, in which he was largely influenced by nature and the rural surroundings of the fields of Castile as a result of his childhood in Valladolid. Very soon, however, he

dal de pensamientos racionales o irracionales por lo que, en todo ese proceso, la forma y la carne se metamorfosea, se va modificando, alterando, descubriendo nuevos elementos internos.

Siendo así, podemos entender al cuerpo que representa Gabarrón como una entidad compleja no ya estructura y unificada como en décadas anteriores, sino que ahora se reconoce asediado por los avances científicos acerca de la inteligencia artificial, la genética, la clonación, las nuevas tecnologías y un largo etcétera de progreso tecno-científicos. Este nuevo modelo anatómico ha perdido su naturaleza e ingenuidad, incluso su caducidad debido a esta nueva fase de expansión científica que ha generado una cultura de lo “posthumano”.

En estos parámetros descubrimos a las figuras de Gabarrón reinventándose constantemente empujadas por una fuerza interior, originada por un exterior volátil, que forman un entramado de representaciones formales simbólicas que pueden ser el embrión de un nuevo ser. En medio de estas circunstancias Gabarrón quizás se siente obligado, de manera inconsciente, a componer, a través de sus figuras humanas, la identidad de un incipiente ciudadano, que se siente acechado, desorientado, turbado, intran-

quilo, sito en un mundo posthumano donde ha perdido todas las referencias tradicionales… razón por la cual la metamorfosis y la desfiguración en los cuerpos son práctica habitual en su obra desde la que representa diferentes iconos que ayudan a reconocer la tipología de los nuevos tiempos.

Esta decidida forma de expresión le lleva a cultivar en muchos momentos de su trayectoria la pintura mural un tipo de representación artística en la que se siente satisfecho ya que en ella encuentra una relación directa entre las antiguas técnicas de pintura muralista y frescos empleadas desde la época prehistórica, pasando por el Renacimiento, hasta la nueva modalidad que se recoge en la arquitectura e inmobiliario urbano de todas las ciudades del mundo: los graffitis. Ésta es una muestra más del carácter proteico de Gabarrón quien ha dado muestras siempre de su pasión por la investigación y el desarrollo como cimientos imprescindibles para evolucionar en su imparable carrera profesional.

Pienso que el colorido con que Gabarrón impregna sus piezas es alegre, brillante, intenso y la variedad de las texturas, -rayadas, salpicadas, unidas- confiere a las superficies un aire musical que las dota de un misterio que invita al recorrido circular entorno a ellas.

seek to express a plurality of ideas, a variety of emotional states, a torrent of rational or irrational thoughts, so that, throughout the process, form and flesh metamorphose, modifying and altering, revealing new elements within.

We can understand the body that Gabarrón represents, therefore, as a complex entity, no longer a unified structure, as in earlier decades, but seeing itself besieged by scientific advances concerning artificial intelligence, genetics, cloning, the new technologies and a long list of technical and scientific achievements. This new anatomical model has lost its naturalness and naivety, and even its perishability, as a result of the new phase of scientific expansion that has generated a culture of the “post-human”.

Within these parameters we find Gabarrón’s figures constantly reinventing themselves, driven by an inner force that comes from a volatile exterior, forming a network of symbolic formal representations that might be the embryo of a new being. Amidst these circumstances Gabarrón may unconsciously feel compelled to compose, in his human figures, the identity of an incipient citizen who has a sense of being watched, disoriented, disturbed,

uneasy, placed in a post-human world where he has lost all his traditional references. With the result that metamorphosis and disfiguration become a habitual practice in his work, in which he represents an assortment of icons that help us to recognize the typology of these new times.

At many points in his career this resolute form of expression has led him to cultivate mural painting, a type of artistic representation in which he feels satisfied, finding in it a direct relationship between the ancient techniques of mural painting and frescos, used from prehistoric times up to the Renaissance, and the new modality, graffiti, such as are found on architecture and urban property in cities throughout the world. This is yet another demonstration of the protean nature of an artist who has always displayed his passion for research and development as indispensable foundations for his evolution in his unstoppable professional career.

I feel that the colour with which Gabarrón imbues his works is cheerful, bright and intense, and the variety of the textures – scored, splattered, united – gives the surfaces a musical quality that endows them with a mystery which invites the visitor to circulate around them.

Este es el caso.

Es un honor para el grupo de empresas Trampolín, que me honro en presidir, poder colaborar ahora en la gran muestra antológica que del prestigioso e internacional creador Cristóbal Gabarrón se abre en el Chelsea Art Museum de Nueva York y posteriormente en el IVAM de Valencia, marcos internacionales incomparables dentro del dominio del arte contemporáneo.

It is an honour for the Trampolín group of companies, that I am honoured to head, to be able to collaborate now in the great anthological exhibition of the prestigious and international creator Cristóbal Gabarrón, which is opening in the Chelsea Art Museum of New York and later in the IVAM in Valencia, incomparable international frameworks within the world of contemporary art.

It coincides on this occasion that Cristóbal Gabarrón, along with his studio work, has given us -within the field of architectonic and urban interventions- an incalculable good with his important work and genial pieces.

indistinguishably anguished and ecstatic, as though if it did not stop expressing its emotions it would collapse and die, or else become a puppet dangling on a social string. Indeed, there is an aura of social catastrophe that hovers around Gabarrón’s figure, even as there is an aura of personal power.

Gabarrón seems to track virtually every change in the body’s sense of itself under the impact of changing moods. There is a sense of constantly unfolding feelings in a self-dramatizing body, with each work integrating a nuance of feeling and a bodily state. The cumulative effect is overpowering: the works synergistically interact, forming a series which however unfinished—infinitely progressive (or is it regressive, to the excruciatingly intimate?)—seems emotionally complete in itself.

Moving from image to image, one senses a singular self that has felt everything that it is humanly possible to feel—and one experiences Gabarrón’s seemingly inexhaustible creativity, not to say fertile curiosity about the human body, and with that the human condition.

The facets of Gabarrón’s figure, then, represent, so many feelings, and

Our changing moods are a kind of feedback from our bodies to ourselves, even as they feedback, in a kind of dialectical loop, to our bodies, changing our sense of ourselves. Gabarrón’s works deal with this psychosomatic dialectic and its distorting effect on our sense of self. Indeed, the distortions—the intricate restlessness and twistedness of his figure, its parts in conflict even when they converge—epitomize the wild give-andtake of this ‘depth’ dialectic. There are moments of coherence within the incoherence, moments of tranquility within the turbulence, moments of stability within the intensity, but they are few and far between: Gabarrón’s figure is pure Sturm und Drang, a masterpiece of passionate expression. It is always beside itself with emotion, often

regresiva, volviendo a lo dolorosamente íntimo?)- parece emocionalmente completa en sí misma. Al pasar de una imagen a otra, percibimos un yo singular que ha sentido todo lo que es humanamente posible sentir, y experimentamos la creatividad de Gabarrón, aparentemente inagotable, por no decir su fértil curiosidad por el cuerpo humano y la condición humana.

Así pues, las facetas de la figura de Gabarrón representan otros tantos sentimientos; su figura es en su conjunto un mosaico de sentimientos, que se hace aún más “sensacional” a causa de las excéntricas formas y de los vehementes colores de cada faceta. Es como si Gabarrón se hubiese zambullido en el famoso río de Heráclito, en el que uno no puede bañarse dos veces y del que sale con un cuerpo diferente cada vez. Por supuesto, muchas de las figuras de Gabarrón son visiblemente corpóreas; donde esto es más evidente es tal vez en la Serie Anatemas (1984) y en la Serie Erótica (1996), como era de esperar, pero todas poseen un cierto aire de espejo, como si se cuestionase su realidad. La Serie Anatomías (1988) pone esto de manifiesto: las figuras tienen tanto de ilusión sin sustancia como de carne sensual. It is as though Gabarrón has dipped into the famous Heracleitean stream in which one cannot dip twice and come out with a different body each time. Thus the figure tends to have a dream-like slipperiness, and even porousness: one often sees right through it to the ground of which it is a part. Such ‘transparency’ gives Gabarrón’s figure an ironic sublimity, even as it reveals it to be an aggregate of incommensurate elements that have playfully congealed into an abstract configuration rather than a figure with a clear identity. Of course many of Gabarrón’s figures are conspicuously corporeal, perhaps most obviously in the Anathema Series (1984) and Erotic Series (1996), as one might expect, but all have a certain mirage-like appearance, as though their reality was in question. The Anatomy Series (1988) makes this explicit: the figures are as much insubstantial illusion as sensual flesh. One may well ask whether Gabarrón’s erotic figures are lurid oases—figments of erotic imagination, and as such seductive illusions (suggesting the erot-

ic component in aesthetic seduction and the aesthetic component in erotic seduction, and thus the inseparability of artistic and erotic imagination)—in the emotional desert of the everyday world, or changing details in an endless process of creative permutation, suggesting that each work is more important for its creative freedom than for the particular figure it pictures.

Constantly re-discovering and re-inventing the body, Gabarrón demonstrates that our subjective image or representation of it is more important than its objective reality. Our fantasy of it determines our sense of self more than its factuality ever can. Our attitude to it—our feeling that the body is beautiful or ugly, ideal or grotesque, marvellous or mundane, conveying either love or hatred of it, and with that the wish to elevate or mortify it—gives it a meaning and presence it can never have as mere matter-of-fact. However physically real and alive, it becomes more real and alive in emotional fantasy—and the human body seems physically fantastic, not to say bizarre, as its strange proportions suggest. The discrepancy in function, shape, and size between

Gabarrón explora con perspicacia esta verdad dialéctica para construir sus absurdas figuras. Es más, deja bien claro el carácter absurdo por naturaleza del cuerpo, insinuando que la naturaleza -y la creatividad, que tiene en ella su origen (pues la creación natural es el modelo de la creatividad humana)- es absurda. Deja claro asimismo que el carácter absurdo del cuerpo supone el carácter absurdo de la psiquis. its parts—arms, legs, and torso hardly seem to belong together, and the distance, emotional as well as physical, between the genitals and head (lower and higher) seems unbridgeable—suggest that it is inherently absurd. It is as though the parts of the body have been arbitrarily put together, however organically connected they are. This seeming arbitrariness is especially evident in the way the genitals and head are attached to opposite ends of the torso. They nominally serve the same body, but they suggest that it is divided against itself—inherently polarized and precariously balanced. The parts of the body may be organically integrated, but the appearance of the body suggests that it is an arbitrary assemblage of incongruous parts.

Gabarrón insightfully explores this dialectical truth to construct his absurd figures. Indeed, they make the natural absurdity of the body transparently clear, suggesting that nature itself—and creativity, which is rooted in it (natural creation being the model for human creativity)— is absurd. They also make it clear that the absurdity of the body signifies the absurdity of the psyche. That is, the apparent conflict between

the parts of the body, rooted in their radically different functions, are clues to psychic conflict—a physiognomic truth, indicating the inseparability of psyche and soma, aesthetically symbolized in Gabarrón’s figures. Their contradictions and tensions are emblematic of the subliminal contradictions and tensions in the psychosoma of all natural organisms, and explosively evident in human nature.

Gabarrón’s psychodramatic figure is in perpetual creative motion, suggesting that it represents a self in search of an identity and stability that elude it. Because it is never exactly itself, it has to keep creating itself— metamorphosize with the hope of finally becoming itself. Each series is like a hall of distorting mirrors in which the self keeps changing, never knowing what it looks like, or for that matter really is. In fact it has no reality, which is why it never looks self-same. Like Proteus—the Heracleitean stream mythologized into a divine figure—it has no fixed form and essential identity, suggesting that it is as estranged from itself as it is from the strangers it escapes by constantly changing identity and form. Proteus is a self that does not so much develop in an epigenetic

La figura psicodramática de Gabarrón está en perpetuo movimiento creativo, lo cual indica que representa un yo en busca de una identidad y una estabilidad que le son esquivas. Como este yo nunca es exactamente igual a sí mismo, tiene que seguir creándose, metamorfoseándose con la esperanza a convertirse finalmente en él mismo. Cada serie es como una sala de espejos deformantes donde el yo cambia sin cesar, sin saber nunca qué aspecto tiene ni, en el fondo, qué es en realidad. Lo cierto es que no tiene realidad, y ésta es la razón por la cual nunca parece el mismo. Como Proteo -el río de Heráclito, transformado por la mitología en una figura divina-, no posee una forma fija ni una identidad esencial, lo que lleva a pensar que está tan alejado de sí propio como de los extraños a los que elude cambiando constantemente de identidad y de forma.

Proteo es un yo que, más que desarrollarse en un proceso epigenético, se repite en infinitas variaciones. Para expresarlo en términos psicológicos modernos, podríamos decir que la figura de Gabarrón se encuen-

tra en un infinito proceso de “autorrealización”, por valernos del término de Abraham Maslow, pero nunca deviene un yo real, aun cuando cada obra sugiere lo que Maslow denomina una “experiencia culminante”, lo cual conlleva un cierto sentido de yo consumado y de “plenitud de lo humano”5. Indudablemente, sugiere lo que el psicoanalista Donald Winnicott llama un “orgasmo del ego”.

La figura de Gabarrón es un interminable Devenir sin un claro y diferenciado Ser. Está casi siempre fuera del centro, como indicando que no posee un centro interior. No está firmemente centrado en sí mismo. Así, unas veces, sus partes huyen volando al espacio en un movimiento centrífugo. Otras, forman una oscura masa, como empujada por poderes que están más allá del control humano. La figura de Gabarrón da la impresión de estar siempre bajo una gran presión que sólo en la muerte se relaja al final -y se torna fácilmente reconocible, es decir, quedando su identidad por fin asegurada-, como dejan patente con ironía la Serie Autorretratos de la Muerte y la Serie Calaveras. Éstas son las obras más españolas de Gabarrón, tanto por sus implicaciones trágicas como

process as repeat itself in endless variations. To put this in modern psychological terms, one might say that Gabarrón’s figure is in endless process of ‘self-actualization,’ to use Abraham Maslow’s term, but never becomes an actual self—even though each work suggests what Maslow calls a ‘peak experience,’ bringing with it a certain sense of consummate self and ‘full humanness.’5 It certainly suggests what the psychoanalyst Donald Winnicott calls an ‘ego orgasm.’

Gabarrón’s figure is an endless Becoming with no clear and distinct Being. It is almost always out of focus, suggesting that it has no inner focus. It is not firmly centered in itself. Thus its parts sometimes centrifugally fly off into space. At other times they form a primordially obscure mass, as though forced together by powers beyond human control. Gabarrón’s figure always seem to be under great pressure, finally relaxing—and becoming readily recognizable, that is, with its identity at last secured—only in death, as the Death Self-Portrait Series and Skull Series make ironically clear. These are Gabarrón’s most Spanish works, both by reason of their tragic implications and stoic fortitude—

their fatalism and unflinching, sharp-eyed gaze at existential horror.

Grimly fearless, they convey a clear consciousness of human suffering, with no guarantee that it makes any sense. But I am arguing that Gabarrón is essentially an action painter, with the figure as much the vehicle of expressive action as the assertive gesture and eccentric shape. And like all action painters, he struggles to present, with a violent immediacy, the pure creative flux that is the fundamental category of organic being, as modern philosophers from Henri Bergson to Alfred North Whitehead have argued.

But, like the deepest action painters, Gabarrón qualifies this with the intuitive recognition that creativity and destructiveness are interdependent, that is, the èlan vitale is contaminated by the death instinct.

It threatens to restore the primordial chaos that libidinous creativity struggles to master by alchemically refining it into meaningful forms the way a sculptor shapes clay. The figure is indeed a very malleable clay in Gabarrón’s hands—and the clay is also a resistant material, for it rarely takes complete human form: Gabarrón’s manically vital figures

La creatividad, sin duda, roza el caos, pero si uno no se hunde en el caos no puede ser creativo, y Gabarrón lo hace sin temor. Sus figuras son fragmentos de un fluir creativo, de aquí su apariencia fragmentaria, no consolidada. Es una constante lucha por llegar al punto de partida y mantenerse en él” (p. 192). ¿Es quizá a esto a lo que se refiere el ser creativo, llegar al punto de partida y mantenerse en él, es decir, estar y sentirse vivo? La incesante creatividad de Gabarrón hace pensar que está empezando de nuevo la vida una y otra vez, temiendo que gaste o se agote, lo cual le hace sentirse muerto, esto es, dejar salir a la superficie el subyacente sentimiento de estar muerto, como hace en el humor melancólico que a veces domina su imaginería. La creatividad protege de la muerte interior proyectando vida sobre objetos exteriores, por ejemplo obras de arte.

are subliminally informed by the formlessness of death, which perhaps explains their oddly melancholy cast, conspicuous in the blackness that blemishes many of them and the sobering greyness that haunts others.

Indeed, they suggest a manic defense against the fate signified by death.6 Creativity undoubtedly verges on chaos, but if one does not plunge into chaos one cannot be creative, and Gabarrón fearlessly takes the plunge. His figures are fragments of creative flux, hence their own fragmentary—unconsolidated—appearance. To play on Whitehead’s fallacy of misplaced concreteness, Gabarrón never misplaces the concreteness of a figure into a matter-of-fact representation, but rather reveals it in all its raw concrescence—which, paradoxically, is why it seems abstract and death-infected. It is as much a statement of uncertainty about the human condition—and art’s power to save human beings from themselves—as it is about the self’s search for certainty, that is, faith in itself.

Gabarrón reminds us of the formal—I prefer to say ontological, for form is the basic being of art—as well as emotional complexity of action

painting at its most authentic. His bold painterliness and slashing lines—the contours of his figures are like karate chops—are ontologically intense, while his energized figures are emotionally intense. Taken together—and the figure informs the ontological action of the painting as much as the ontological action informs the emotional action of the figure—they remind us that action painting has deep roots in Symbolism, with its preoccupation with unconscious expression, as well as in pure painting, which is where the ontological autonomy of art explicitly declared itself. Thus for Gabarrón the human story and the development of painting are inseparable. The human side of action painting has been suppressed by theoretical emphasis on its supposedly complete absorption in the medium, but Gabarrón’s action painting strikes a new balance between humanness and purity, making action painting once again aesthetically fresh and humanly meaningful.

At its most convincing action painting invokes the spontaneous feeling of being alive, human, and individual in defiance of dehumanizing, emotionally stultifying mass society. To use Winnicott’s famous distinc-

Winnicott writes: ‘If I take the idea of liveliness, I have to allow for at least two opposites, one being deadness, as in manic defence, and the other being a simple absence of liveliness.... what I cannot accept is that Life has Death as its opposite, except clinically in the manic-depressive swing, and in the concept of the manic defence in which depression is negated and negatived.’ Winnicott adds: ‘To be alive is all. It is a constant struggle to get to the starting point and to keep there’ (p. 192). Is that perhaps what being creative is about: getting to the starting point, that is, being and feeling alive? Gabarrón’s relentless creativity suggests that he is starting aliveness over and over again, in fear that it will run down or run out, thus causing him to feel dead, that is, allow the underlying feeling of being dead to surface—as it does in the melancholy mood that sometimes informs his imagery. Creativity wards off the threat of inner deadness by projecting aliveness into external objects, for example, works of art.

The relentless spontaneity of Gabarrón’s gesturalism and his idiosyncratically personal vision of the human figure convey his sense of being creatively true to himself. How he is able to sustain them is beyond comprehension, considering that we are required to abandon our spontaneity and personal vision to take our place in the everyday world.

Gabarrón’s various efforts to bring this spontaneity and vision into the public sphere—his attempt to restore art to the vital place it once had in the social contract, implying that it is not the private fetish it sometimes seems to have become—indicates his confidence in his creativity.

His commissions for the Olympics and the United Nations show that he has not misplaced his confidence.

All this suggests that Gabarrón is a romantic. He is, in the deepest sense, that is, not only because he is concerned with ‘mode[s] of feel-

ing,’ as Baudelaire said a romantic is—and thus with ‘intimacy, spirituality, colour, aspiration towards the infinite’7—but because, as Novalis wrote, the romantic genius has ‘the capacity to treat imaginary objects as if they were real, and real objects as if they were imagined.’8 It is because Gabarrón’s figures seem simultaneously real and imagined—bizarrely realistic and imaginatively abstract—that his art is profoundly romantic. Perhaps even more than his figures, his paradoxically infinite yet intimate space—it appears in all its innocent grandeur in the Cosmos Series (1994-95), where it seems to be giving birth to life, visible in seed-like form—is uncompromisingly romantic in its implications. The sense of spontaneous generation or virginal creation in the Cosmos Series—Gabarrón’s cosmos resembles a blastocyst ready to spontaneously explode with life, without the catalytic intervention of a higher power—suggests that he is preoccupied with the biological mystery of life, if natural life still has mystery (and if life is still natural) these scientific days. His works are essential to the re-enchantment of art that is beginning to occur in defiance of its disenchantment in tech-

Es porque las figuras de Gabarrón parecen al mismo tiempo, reales e imaginarias -extrañamente realistas e imaginativamente abstractas- por lo que su arte es profundamente romántico. Tal vez incluso más que las figuras, su espacio, paradójicamente infinito y sin embargo íntimo -que se muestra en toda su inocente grandeza en la Serie Cosmos (1994-1995), en la cual parece estar dando a luz la vida,

Unas veces se inclina a un lado, otras al otro. Pocas veces está completamente inmóvil y erguida -el primer paso para tornarse humano es mantenerse erguido, como afirmó el fenomenólogo Erwin Straus, y a las figuras de Gabarrón parece que les cuesta mucho hacerlo, indicando que en el fondo siguen siendo animales (como también insinúa su muy animado carácter)-, sugiriendo así su inherente precariedad. La figura de Gabarrón está a punto de caerse, pero se enmienda antes de que suceda: la vemos en el proceso de enderezarse, si bien nunca logra un equilibrio completo, ni interior ni exterior. Nos recuerda a los bailarines fauvistas de Matisse y los de Nolde, todavía más dionisíacos. Pero las figuras de Gabarrón se mueven con una fuerza y un impulso aún mayores que estos danzarines primitivos, y muestran aún más desbordamiento y excitación interior. Parecen haber interiorizado algún género de peligro y estar huyendo de él al mismo tiempo.

Son primitivos románticos y emocionales, tal como los entiende el historiador del arte Robert Goldwater10 -así lo indica la Serie África (1987) de Gabarrón (Goldwater atribuye al fauvismo el “descubrimiento” de la escultura africana)-, pero son también intelectualmente complejos, como deja ver su carácter construido. Son una sofisticada manipulación de planos con implicaciones del cubismo tanto analítico como sintético Gabarrón parece estar analizando la figura, esto es, reduciéndola a sus aspectos ontológico-formales, y al propio tiempo construyéndola con materias primas ontológico-formales, de modo que es construida y deconstruida sin distinción posible-, que poseen todavía más resonancia inconsciente a causa de la función erógena de los planos, es decir, de la excitación libidinosa y agresiva que se les confiere. En efecto, irradian excitación, como si nunca se les agotara el combustible emocional. Su vitalidad es sin duda un reflejo de la creatividad instintiva de Gabarrón.

catches itself before it does: we see it in the process of righting its balance, if never achieving complete equilibrium, neither inwardly nor outwardly. One is reminded of Matisse’s Fauvist dancers, and of Nolde’s even more Dionysian dancers. But Gabarrón’s figures move with even greater force and momentum than those primitive dancers, and are even more inwardly aroused and wild. They seem to have internalized some sort of danger and be fleeing from it at the same time.

They are romantic and emotional primitives, in the art historian Robert Goldwater’s sense10—Gabarrón’s Africa Series (1987) indicates as much (Goldwater credits Fauvism with the ‘discovery’ of African sculpture)—but they are also intellectually sophisticated, as their constructed character indicates. They are a suave manipulation of planes with both Analytic and Synthetic Cubist implications—Gabarrón seems to be analyzing the figure, that is, reducing it to its onto-formal aspects, and at the same time building it of raw onto-formal materials, so that it is indistinguishably constructed and deconstructed—made all the more unconsciously resonant by reason of the erotogenic function of the

De esta manera, la figura de Gabarrón tiene una percepción tanto “cosmopolita” como “provinciana”: simultáneamente es un ciudadano del mundo, incluso una figura universal, cósmica o arquetípica, y está imbuida de una cierta sensibilidad “local”, trasmitida precisamente por medio de una compleja introducción de tonos de tierra y colores primarios, que recuerdan el Mediterráneo y la montañosa España. Se siente el tirón del sistema concéntrico en las inquietas dimensiones verticales y horizontales de la figura de Gabarrón y el tirón de la cuadrícula en su incierta centralidad. Lo que quiero decir, es que la compleja interacción del sistema con centro y el de cuadrícula en la figura de Gabarrón es responsable de su aspecto distorsionado. También quiero decir que el yo no viene dado por Dios, por utilizar esta expresión, como tampoco la capacidad para mantener un sentido del yo: el yo se obtiene, y en buena parte por medio de una situación relacional, como han opinado psicoanalistas tan diferentes como Winnicott y Heinz Kohut. Y las figuras de Gabarrón están por lo general traumáticamente aisladas, excepto cuando mantienen relaciones sexuales, como en la Serie Erótica. E incluso entonces la experiencia sexual tiene una apariencia traumática, es decir, expresa un sentido perturbado del yo. Su excitación ¿es indicativa en general del llamado grito expresionista, entendido como reacción al trauma o herida narcisista? La impresión de aislamiento totémico, por dramático y estimulante que sea ese aislamiento, es muy clara en las esculturas totémicas de Gabarrón. En cierto modo, sus figuras están todas ellas impregnadas de instinto desinteresado, todavía más llenas de astucia instintiva, es decir, viven por su ingenio emocional, pues no tienen un

But the figures are made even more convulsive by the fact that they seem to be torn between what the art historian Rudolf Arnheim calls the ‘cosmic’ and ‘parochial’ spatial systems.11 That is, they are a paradoxical combination of what Arnheim calls ‘centric shapes’ and the centerless ‘framework of verticals and horizontals’ of the Cartesian grid.

Thus Gabarrón’s figure has both a ‘cosmopolitan’ and ‘provincial’ feel—it is simultaneously a citizen of the world, even a universal or cosmic or archetypal figure, and imbued with a certain ‘local’ sensibility, precisely conveyed through a complex integration of earth tones and primary colors, suggestive of Mediterranean as well as mountainous Spain. One feels the pull of the concentric system in the unsettled vertical and horizontal dimensions of Gabarrón’s figure and the pull of the grid in its uncertain centeredness. It is as though Gabarrón is desper-

ately trying to find the center of gravity in the figure—trying to show that the figure is centered in itself, that its body is under the control of its self—while suggesting, perhaps unwittingly, that it has none, and even worse is incapable of constructing one. This is why its body seems altogether out of control—unregulated in its expression of energy and power of movement.

I am saying that the complex interplay of centric and grid systems in Gabarrón’s figure is responsible for its distorted appearance. I am also saying that the self is not God-given, as it were, nor is the capacity for sustaining a sense of self: the self is achieved, largely through a relational situation, as psychoanalysts as different as Winnicott and Heinz Kohut have argued. And Gabarrón’s figures are by and large traumatically isolated—except when they are engaged in sexual relations, as in the Erotic Series. And even then the sexual experience has a traumatic look, that is, conveys a disrupted sense of self. (Is their excitement in general indicative of the so-called expressionistic scream, understood as a response to narcissistic injury or trauma?) The sense of totemic iso-

La Serie Aventure es a mi juicio la demostración más directa de la dialéctica del espacio figural -que lleva consigo la dialéctica del yo (el cual trata de orientarse en un cosmos desorientador) y el instinto (a la vez embelesada y mórbidamente expresivo)- en la obra de Gabarrón. El Número 1 es el torbellino centrífugo de un espacio vertiginoso que gira alrededor de un centro ambiguo, sugestivamente formado en la intersección del plano superior, anguloso (intelectual), y el plano inferior, curvado (animal), de la figura amorfa. La figura empieza a estabilizarse en el Número 2 -se ven unas piernas que andan y participan dos figuras, la más pequeña (¿masculina?) oscura, la más grande (¿femenina?) intensamente roja y luminosa (lo que evoca una voluptuosidad impactada)pero, una vez más, parece deshacerse caóticamente en el Número 3, por muy erguida (aunque encorvada) que siga estando. La figura del Número 4 es maciza y estable, casi brutal y desde luego sugeridora de enfrentamientos. Y después, de nuevo caos amorfo y disolución en el Número 5, que parece más una aventura puramente ontológico-formal

Unas veces las figuras parecen estar luchando, como en el Número 156, y otras parecen asediadas por fuerzas demoníacas, como en el Número 288; unas veces están llenas de luz y alegría, como en el Número 328, y otras se dirían desmembradas y sus pares dispersas y recompuestas en el espacio, como en el Número 126, y aun otras parecen hundirse y disolverse en la tierra, como en el Número 207.

In a sense, his figures are all selfless instinct—all the more full of instinctive cunning, that is, living by their emotional wits, because they lack a firm grip on themselves, however hard they struggle to have one.12 The Adventure Series (1990) seems to me the most direct demonstration of this dialectic of figural space—bringing with it the dialectic of self (trying to orient itself in a disorienting cosmos) and instinct (at once rapturously and morbidly expressive)—in Gabarrón’s oeuvre. Number 1 is a centrifugal swirl of vertiginous space around an ambiguous center, suggestively formed at the intersection of the upper angular (intellectual) plane and the lower curved (animal) plane of the amorphous figure. The figure begins to stabilize in Number 2—striding legs are visible, and two figures engage, the smaller (male?) one dark, the larger (female?) one luridly red and luminous (suggesting an impacted voluptuousness)—but once again seems to chaotically come apart in Number 3, however upright (but hunched) it remains. The figure in Number 4 is

massive and stable, almost brutal and certainly confrontational. And then amorphous chaos and dissolution again in Number 5, which seems more like a purely onto-formal rather than clearly figural adventure.

And on and on, with the figure going through endless permutations (it sometimes seems like an aroused penis, as in Numbers 15 and 19, and sometimes like an agonized shadow of itself, as in Numbers 38 to 51), as though in demonstration of the fact that creativity involves ‘innumerable chance permutations, only the most stable [being] retained for further information processing’13—but Gabarrón retains the most unstable, as though they were most useful information (certainly about the psyche)—and, at the same time, in demonstration of the fact that the figure has no inherently correct ‘position’ and that the body is imperfect and vulnerable, from the inside as well as outside. Sometimes the figures seem to be fighting, as in Number156, sometimes they look as though they are wearing clothes, as in Number123, sometimes they seem besieged by demonic forces, as in Number 288, sometimes they are full of lightness and joy and color, as in Number 328, sometimes they

Esto es algo más que simple virtuosismo impresionante. No conozco ningún otro caso en la historia del arte en el que se haya captado de manera tan brillante y convincente la contracción y expansión del ego corporal de la fisiología del placer. Espontaneidad y perspicacia se unen para presentar la imagen corporal con una verosimilitud emocional poco corriente. existencia humana, una perspectiva que se tornó literal en la era del espacio (Gabarrón es en realidad una especie de explorador espacial, pues cartografía nuevos terrenos de espacio abstracto)- y porque su pesimismo, tan español, contiene un añadido de color y sensualidad mediterráneos, como ponen de manifiesto la Serie Mallorca (1991-93) y la Serie Palma (1994). Si España es el lugar donde se encuentran y se mezclan un duro clima norteño y otro cálido meridional, Gabarrón es sin duda un artista muy español.

This is not only because he came into his own when abstraction did, but because he has a cosmic perspective on human existence—it became literal in the space age (Gabarrón is in fact a kind of space explorer, mapping new terrains of abstract space)—and because his very Spanish pessimism has a leavening admixture of Mediterranean color and sensuousness, as the Mallorca Series (1991-93) and Palma Series (1994) make very clear. If Spain is the place where harsh Northern and warm Southern psychic weather meet and mix, then Gabarrón is a very Spanish artist.

seem to be dismembered and their parts strewn and recomposed in space, as in Number 126, and sometimes they seem to sink and dissolve into the earth, as in Number 207.

This is more than just stunning virtuosity. I don’t know anywhere else in the history of art where the shrinking and expanding of the pleasurephysiologic body ego has been so brilliantly and convincingly captured.

Every possible body image seems to be represented in Gabarrón’s Adventure Series. Spontaneity and insight unite to present the body image with unusual emotional verisimilitude. It is captured on the wing, as it were, restlessly transforming itself according to its mood. Only in Goya’s Caprichos is there anything similar and wide-ranging, and Gabarrón’s Adventures have a certain affinity with Goya’s Caprichos, down to the detail of their nuanced surface and their ironical, even sardonic undercurrent. But the capriciousness or whimsicality of Gabarrón’s Adventures is informed by a modernist sensibility as well as an awareness of human folly. Gabarrón is concerned with the vicissitudes of the onto-formal as well as with the ups and downs of feeling. He

tension between figure and ground is emblematic of the reciprocity and tension between the emerging self and the facilitative environment—is also an aesthetic materialization of the so-called flow experience, more particularly, of the body in flow.14 Many of the figures in the Magicus Obwer Series are sexual in import, for example, Numbers 11 and 15 (female and male bodies respectively), suggesting that the experience of sex as flow is inseparable from the experience of movement as flow for Gabarrón. Indeed, in the Erotic Series the body seems remarkably mobile—it’s not just performing a mechanical act—suggesting that sexual passion exists to test (and stretch) the limits of bodily movement.

The more aroused the body, the more precise its movements; in the Erotic Series it has the spring and swiftness of an attacking animal.

Indeed, erotic energy is as implicit in Gabarrón’s animal bodies as aggression is implicit in his erotic bodies. Can one say that the luminous red figure in Magicus Obwer Number 16 represents Eros, and the black figure represents Thanatos? They are allegorical bodies, symbols of a life and death struggle. For Gabarrón the body is the screen on which

the life and death instincts act out their difference, which remains even in the animal sexuality in which they converge.

However much Gabarrón’s bodies tend to become amorphous, discombobulated, grotesque masses—perhaps this is most evident in the Anatomy Series, Anathema Series, and Altar Magicus Series, where the body’s parts tend to be re-arranged to suggest that it has no fundamental structure (even as its disordering makes its organic aliveness more evident, for it becomes a sort of wild growth, a fresh evolution of mutant flesh)—they usually retain their contours. But the contours are ironical—double-edged, as it were. Gabarrón often flattens the body, giving it a contour in the process. The body is fitted into a certain shape—hardly procrustean, but nonetheless determinate—in what amounts to an act of emotional as well as technical mastery. What would otherwise be unrecognizable in heaving flesh becomes conspicuously evident. But the sudden consciousness of the contour suggests an ecstatic, out of body as well as bodily experience.

To construct a contour is to become conscious of the body’s limits—to

Éste es el quid de la experiencia cósmico-extática del cuerpo. El cuerpo parece ilimitado, no simplemente un aspecto o expresión de espacio infinito, sino infinito en sí mismo. Mientras que un contorno es un constructor intelectual, que da al cuerpo una cierta inteligibilidad, el contorno de Gabarrón confirma su ininteligibilidad emocional, su existencia en la psiquis como una ima-

gen fantástica. Pues, por decisivo que sea, el contorno de Gabarrón es demasiado dinámico e inquieto para permanecer en su sitio y de este modo tomar una “medida” exacta del cuerpo. En Anatema 23 y Magicus Obwer 13-I -podría mencionar otras obras-, el contorno, por definido y firme que sea, parece estar perdiendo forma al mismo tiempo que la da.

Es definido en su indefinición, por decirlo así. Esto se hace irónicamente explícito en la Serie Cosmos, donde el cosmos circular -es, en efecto, puro contorno, es decir, contorno sin cuerpo, o, si queremos, por razón de la densidad pictórica de su apariencia, contorno como cuerpo- se muestra a menudo como una cadena de pulsaciones de luz enlazadas, prestas a separarse y a salir volando cada una por un lado en cualquier momento. disengage from its seductive flesh, to see the body with a certain detachment—and thus to no longer see it unconsciously, that is, to no longer be mindlessly absorbed in and fascinated by it. But Gabarrón’s contours keep changing, and seem to project from the body as much as they delineate it—they seem to externalize its aliveness even as they make it socially intelligible—suggesting that however delimited and contained the body looks from the objective outside, from the subjective inside it is unconsciously experienced as on the verge of losing (abandoning?) its boundaries and spilling over into and merging with the space outside it.

This is the gist of the cosmic-ecstatic experience of the body. The body seems boundless—not simply an aspect or expression of infinite space, but infinite in itself.

While a contour is an intellectual construct, giving the body a certain intelligibility, Gabarrón’s contour confirms its emotional unintelligibility—its existence as a fantastic image in the psyche. For however decisive, Gabarrón’s contour is too dynamic and restless to remain in place, and thus to take an accurate ‘measure’ of the body. In Anathema 23

and Magicus Obwer—I could mention other works—the contour, however definite and firm, seems to be losing shape as much as giving it. It is definite in its indefiniteness, as it were. This is ironically explicit in the Cosmos Series, where the circular cosmos—it is in effect pure contour, that is, contour without body, or, if one wishes, by reason of the painterly density of its appearance, contour as body—is often shown as a chain of linked pulses of light, ready to separate and fly apart at a moment’s notice. And they do in several works; Numbers 23, 24, and 29 show us the cosmic circle dissolved, the beads of light scattered. The cosmos has become a shapeless blur, its pure light shattered into colorful fragments. Dare one say that Gabarrón’s contour destroys shape as much as it creates it? Apocalyptic fantasy is never far from Gabarrón’s imagination.

The Europa Series (1989) is no doubt related to Gabarrón’s Twelve European Muses (installed in Brussels for the European Parliament).

But what strikes me as particularly important about them is their hybrid representations of animals, that is, their mythopoetic represen-

La Serie Europa (1989) guarda sin duda relación con las Doce Musas Europeas (instaladas en Bruselas para el Parlamento Europeo). Pero lo que me resulta especialmente importante de ellas son sus representaciones híbridas de animales, esto es, su representación de monstruos animalescos a modo de creación de mitos. Por sí mismos, los Números 7, 8, 11, 15 y 20 constituyen un grupo diferenciado que evoca el animismo pagano de las obras de Gabarrón en su conjunto. El carácter belicoso de estos extravagantes seres, con sus bien visibles dientes -su mordedura no es precisamente juguetona, por muy juguetones que parezcanindican la fuerza de voluntad de Gabarrón. Estos seres, por absurdos que sean -hasta cómicamente absurdos-, nos devuelven a un mundo en el que un artista tenía que conocer el lenguaje de los animales para hacer arte. Es decir, el genio artístico era inseparable del ‘genio’ de la naturaleza. Al mismo tiempo, los estrafalarios dientes hacen pensar en la ferocidad humana, en la destructividad de los seres humanos en su faceta más animal. Este grupo de imágenes ofrece un ingenioso recurso para salvar las diferencias entre la mentalidad animal y la humana. Los

tation of animal monsters. Taken by themselves, Numbers 7, 8, 11, 15, and 20 form a distinctive group suggesting the pagan animism of Gabarrón’s works as a whole. The pugnacious character of these bizarre creatures, with their conspicuous teeth—their bite is not exactly playful, however playful they look—suggests Gabarrón’s will power.

These creatures, however absurd—even comically absurd—restore a world in which an artist had to know the language of the animals to make art. That is, artistic genius was inseparable from the ‘genius’ of nature. At the same time, the outlandish teeth suggest human viciousness—the destructiveness of human beings at their most animal. This group of images offers an ingenious bridging of animal and human mentalities. The sharp, threatening teeth stand out of the plump, round bodies, suggesting the paradoxical character of nature and human nature. The teeth are clearly sadistic, while the bodies are inert—the teeth alone can move, and then only violently, and independently of the complacent bodies.

Unexpectedly, considering the animal intensity of his art—on the surface it seems more like an example of what Marcel Duchamp called ‘animal expression’ than ‘intellectual expression’—there is a humanistic undertone to Gabarrón’s work. More particularly, there is a struggle to achieve humanism—and thus transcend both animal instincts and modern mechanistic society, both of which are equally indifferent to human meaning—in the sense in which Adrian Stokes defines it. He writes: ‘The words ‘humanist’ and ‘humanism’ are hard to define. Whatever may be meant, I am convinced that a desideratum for the humanist is an environment stimulating awareness of otherness in harmony with hopes of an integrated object, outer as well as inner.’15 Associating ‘humanistic attitudes for the adult who has embraced it’ with the psychoanalyst Melanie Klein’s concept of the depressive position, with its reparative concerns and insightful gratitude, Stokes associates her concept of the paranoid-schizoid position, with its destructive envy and

nista es un entorno que estimula la conciencia de la otredad, en armonía con la esperanza de un objeto integrado, tanto exterior como interior”15. Al asociar las “actitudes humanistas en el adulto que se ha adherido a él” con el concepto, acuñado por la psicoanalista Melanie Klein, de la posición depresiva, con sus inquietudes reparadoras y su perspicaz gratitud, Stokes asocia el concepto de Klein de la posición paranoide-esquizoide (con su envidia destructiva y su perversa escisión psíquica) con los ‘mecanismos y los ruidos, causantes de desconexión, de [...] las ciudades’.

La Serie de Personajes Históricos y la Serie de la Familia de Gabarrón expresan una “estimulante conciencia de la otredad, en armonía con la esperanza de un objeto integrado”: los cuerpos de las figuras están distorsionados y semejan estar al borde de la desintegración, pero sus cabezas están enteras e integradas, como sugiriendo el triunfo de la mente civilizada sobre la materia animal. Los Personajes Históricos y la Familia forman una comunidad de individuos diferenciados, en contraposición a la anónima sociedad de la urbe impersonal. Y también están

en contraposición a las figuras animalescas de la mayoría de sus obras; son asimismo anónimas, esto es, carecen de identidad particular. Las obras sociales de Gabarrón -que van desde su alegre Barrio del Color, pasando por sus numerosos monumentos públicos, entre ellos el Bosque Olímpico de esculturas, hasta la inusual Capilla del Milenio- son claros intentos de crear entornos con un significado humano, es decir, entornos que incorporen la riqueza orgánica de la vida humana y de este modo faciliten el desarrollo del significado humano, superando así la sensación de desconexión y disonancia que experimentamos subliminalmente en las ciudades mecánicas en las que todos vivimos. El interés social de Gabarrón, por utilizar la expresión del psicoanalista Alfred Adler -quien pensaba que no estamos humanamente completos sin él- es un intento convincente de erradicar la indiferencia y la sensación de inutilidad que crecen como hierbajos emocionales en el desierto urbano.

Si las figuras animalescas de Gabarrón son una protesta contra el inorganicismo deshumanizado del moderno entorno urbano, sus obras humanistas son una protesta contra la neurosis existencial de sus habitantes.

El mural Homenaje al Espíritu Humano, hecho para el American Sports Museum and Archive de Daphne, Alabama y que representa a Jackie Robinson, el primer afroamericano al que se permitió jugar al béisbol en las grandes ligas -un personaje auténticamente heroico en un hostil entorno racista- es quizá la obra más palmariamente humanista de Gabarrón, más aún porque versa sobre un personaje que simboliza el momento en el que el béisbol pasó a ser un interés humano y no simplemente un juego. Más universal, los innovadores murales y esculturas de Gabarrón para la Capilla del Milenio de Medina del Campo suponen un triunfo humanista y artístico. Ponen de manifiesto la complejidad estética y existencial de su arte. La Capilla es aparentemente cristiana domina el espacio una escultura de Cristo crucificado, enorme y un tanto intimidatoria, todavía más desconcertante e imponente por su fragmentado carácter cubista- pero presenta el cristianismo en términos humanistas, como dejan bien patente los temas pintados en el muro del nuevo milenio16. La visión positiva del muro del nuevo milenio contrasta con la negativa del muro del viejo milenio, aunque hay cierta afini-

dad entre sus colores y formas y hasta cierto punto entre sus figuras, torturadas y hostiles en el muro del viejo milenio, más benignas, si bien aún distorsionadas, en el muro del nuevo milenio. Pero se evidencia una sensación de incertidumbre en cuanto al resultado de la lucha entre las fuerzas del pasado y las fuerzas del futuro -incertidumbre en cuanto a si la humanidad puede verdaderamente salvarse de sí misma- en la llamada Puerta de la Esperanza, por la cual se entra en la Capilla. No totalmente esperanzadora: de manera ambigua, un pez de color azul celeste, un símbolo tradicional de Cristo (pescador de hombres), aparece en una negra superficie de mal agüero que tiene la forma de un corazón destrozado y grotescamente distorsionado. Acaso nazca la esperanza en el corazón humano, pero parece ser irremediablemente negra.

Gabarrón’s Historical Personages Series and Family Series convey a ‘stimulating awareness of otherness in harmony with hopes of an integrated object’—the bodies of the figures are distorted, and seem on the verge of disintegration, but their heads are whole and integrated, suggesting the triumph of civilized mind over animal matter. The Historical Personages and Family form a community of distinctive individuals, in contradistinction to the anonymous society of the impersonal city. And also in contradistinction to the animal-like figures in the majority of his works; they also are anonymous, that is, with no particular identity.

Gabarrón’s social works—ranging from his joyful Neighborhood of Color through his numerous public monuments, including the Olympic Forest of sculptures, and climaxing in the unusual Chapel of the Millennium—are clearly attempts to create humanly meaningful environments, that is, environments which embody the organic richness of human life and thus facilitate the growth of human meaning, thereby

overcoming the sense of disconnection and dissonance we subliminally experience in the mechanical cities in which we all live. Gabarrón’s social interest, to use the psychoanalyst Alfred Adler’s term—he thought we were not humanly complete without it—is a convincing attempt to stamp out the indifference and sense of futility that breed like emotional weeds in the urban desert. If Gabarrón’s animal-like figures are a protest against the dehumanizing inorganicism of the modern urban environment, then his humanist works are a protest against the existential neurosis of its inhabitants.

The mural ‘A Tribute to Human Spirit,’ made for the American Sports Museum and Archive in Daphne, Alabama, and depicting Jackie Robinson, the first African-American allowed to play baseball in the major leagues—a truly heroic figure in a hostile racist environment—is perhaps Gabarrón’s most obviously humanistic work, all the more so because it deals with a figure who symbolizes the moment when baseball became a human concern not simply a game. More universal, Gabarrón’s innovative murals and sculptures for the Chapel of the

rior no es exactamente un sagrado corazón, aunque puede ser una ruina sagrada, un monumento a la inevitable catástrofe y el sufrimiento humanos. Es como si se “revistiera” fantásticamente de la extravagancia del arte religioso del Barroco español. En realidad puede considerarse incluso como si revistiera “demencialmente” los excitados pliegues del ropaje barroco español, que también suele estar teñido de manía religiosa y de histeria, por no decir de ciego fervor. No está claro que la figura suspendida del Cristo crucificado que está enfrente -cuando la puerta está cerrada, corazón y figura se halla uno frente a otra- esté en mejores condiciones: como el corazón, desquiciadamente expresionista, el Cristo cubista es un extraño agregado de fragmentos apenas proporcionados, si bien más grandes y en menor número que los que componen el corazón. Gabarrón ha reconstituido el corazón humano y el Cristo muerto a partir de sus fragmentos en un acto de reconstrucción artística, como para sugerir que la resurrección y la totalidad, y con ellas la integridad de espíritu, son posibles, pero no están garantizadas. Así, las filas, aparentemente angélicas, de gallinas que hay en la pared detrás

del Cristo crucificado son más sombra que sustancia. Se hallan en una zona nebulosa entre el cielo y el infierno, que es donde nos hallamos cuando estamos en el centro de la Capilla. Puede que Gabarrón sea optimista en cuanto al nuevo milenio, pero su presentación del viejo milenio es desde luego pesimista. Y las figuras del nuevo no son más humanamente ideales que las del viejo. A mí, la Capilla no me transmite tantos sentimientos de esperanza como a otros comentaristas, aunque sí la hay en sus luminosos colores, sobre todo en los de los mosaicos exteriores y en las espléndidas ventanas. Su blancura filtra e intensifica la luz natural del exterior, haciéndose abstracta y espiritual -pura- dentro de la Capilla, y más aún porque las motas y cintas de color de las ventanas acentúan su claridad.

No falta en el catolicismo una conciencia psicológica, como su diferenciación entre los siempre pecados capitales y las siete virtudes capitales, y la obra de Gabarrón es profundamente psicológica, sea cual sea el idealismo social del muro del nuevo milenio. Quisiera sugerir que dicha pared se ocupa de lo que el psicoanalista Erich Fromm describe como

Millennium in Medina del Campo are a humanistic and artistic triumph. They demonstrate the aesthetic and existential complexity of his art. The Chapel is ostensibly Christian—a huge, somewhat intimidating sculpture of Christ crucified dominates the space, all the more unnerving and awesome because of its fragmented Cubist character—but it presents Christianity in humanistic terms, as the themes depicted on the wall of the new millennium make clear.16 The positive outlook of the new millennium wall starkly contrasts with the negative outlook of the old millennium wall, although there is a certain affinity between their colors and shapes, and to an extent their figures—tortured and hostile on the old millennium wall, more benign if still distorted on the new millennium wall. But a sense of uncertainty about the outcome of the struggle between the forces of the past and the forces of the future—a sense of uncertainty about whether humanity can truly save itself from itself—is evident in the so-called Door of Hope through which one enters the Chapel. It is not entirely hopeful: equivocally, a light skyblue fish, a traditional symbol of Christ (fisher of men), is inscribed on

an ominous black field, shaped like a broken, grotesquely distorted heart. Hope may be born in the human heart, but it seems irredeemably black.

As though confirming the failure of hope—that is, symbolizing hopelessness and futility—the inside of the door is an amazing abstract sculpture of what can only be described as a completely broken heart.

It is even more grotesquely misshapen and hurt than the heart on the outside of the door. This inner heart is not exactly a sacred heart, although it may be a sacred ruin—a memorial to inevitable human catastrophe and suffering. It is a fantastic ‘take’ on the extravagance of Spanish Baroque religious art. Indeed, it can even be regarded as an ‘insane’ take on the excited folds of Spanish Baroque drapery, which also tend to be informed with religious mania and hysteria, not to say blind fervor. It is not clear that the suspended figure of the crucified Christ opposite it—when the door is closed the heart and figure confront each other—is in any better shape: like the wildly expressionistic heart, the muted Cubist Christ is a bizarre aggregate of barely commen-

las necesidades inhumanas que aparecen cuando las necesidades humanas no son satisfechas17: “Artificialmente producidas, estas necesidades [inhumanas] están concebidas para apartar la atención [del hombre] de sus necesidades humanas... El hombre alienado y una sociedad caracterizada por la alienación [la moderna sociedad urbana] crean necesidades artificiales que esclavizan aún más al individuo y de este modo lo alienan cada vez más de sus propias necesidades, pues lo convierten en medio para la satisfacción de las necesidades de otros”. Las necesidades humanas o existenciales son: la necesidad de relación, la necesidad de trascendencia, que supone la necesidad de trascender el “estado de la criatura pasiva”, es decir, el “papel de haber sido simplemente creado”; la necesidad de arraigo, que implica “plantar nuevas raíces para... la existencia”; la necesidad de una experiencia de identidad o unidad; la necesidad de un marco de orientación y de un objeto de devoción, que conlleva la necesidad de un objeto de “interés primordial”, en expresión del teólogo Paul Tillich; y, finalmente, la necesidad de eficacia: una persona eficaz es “la que tiene la capacidad de hacer, de efectuar, de realizar algo”.

Ahora bien, el rasgo fundamental de la Capilla de Gabarrón es su carácter dividido. Está dividida contra sí misma, como deja claro la brusca diferencia entre la pared del viejo milenio y la del nuevo. La figura fragmentada del Crucificado y el corazón del interior, todavía más fragmentado, hacen pensar que esta división es absoluta, es irreparable. ¿Se puede decir que la Capilla nos deja en un limbo entre las necesidades humanas y las inhumanas, sugiriendo que los seres humanos no saben lo que necesitan ni quiénes son? Yo creo que sí. En la pared, encima del corazón roto, hay pintada una caprichosa calavera, irónicamente exhibida entre sutiles cortinas, con un ser que parece un insecto y un bastón (símbolo de la vejez) como sus atributos. No podemos ir más allá de la condición humana -incluso Cristo está sometido a la muerte (en la cruz de Gabarrón, desde luego, está lejos de la salvación)-, lo cual es no saber cuáles son las necesidades que tenemos, es decir, dónde radica nuestro mayor interés existencial. En la Capilla de Gabarrón no hay en parte alguna un signo de salvación humanista, esto es, de la satisfacción de necesidades humanas. Por el contrario, señales de insatisfacción y

Gabarrón has pieced together the fragments of the human heart and the dead Christ in an act of artistic reconstruction, as though to suggest that resurrection and wholeness, and with them integrity of spirit, are possible but not guaranteed. Thus the seemingly angelic rows of hens on the wall behind the crucified Christ are more shadow than substance.

They are in twilight zone between heaven and hell—which is where we are when we stand in the middle of the Chapel. Gabarrón may be optimistic about the new millennium, but his rendering of the old millennium is certainly pessimistic. And the figures of the new millennium are no more humanly ideal than the figures of the old millennium. I find the Chapel less hopeful than other commentators do, although there is hope in its luminous colors, especially those of the exterior mosaics, and especially in the glorious windows. Their whiteness filters and intensifies the outside natural light, so that it becomes abstract and spiritual— pure—inside the chapel, all the more so because its brightness is accented by the flecks and ribbons of color in the windows.

Antes que nada, las figuras del nuevo milenio son tan surrealmente extrañas y están tan absurdamente distorsionadas -indicando su autoalienación- como las del viejo milenio. Tal vez pertenezcan a diversas épocas y reacciones a sus respectivas circunstancias de diferentes maneras -menos violentamente- pero siguen siendo inquietantemente monstruosas. No parece casual que la Libertad sea simbolizada por una libélula (de alas y patas verdes, como corroborando su pertenencia a la naturaleza). En la Paz y la Solidaridad tenemos lo que podríamos llamar seres protohumanos, pero algunos son en parte verdes, como indicación de que siguen ligados a la naturaleza, y todos son más o menos fragmentarios, indicación de que no están en absoluto enteros. Paz y Solidaridad parecen ser provisionales -no claramente establecidas-, como induce a pensar la distancia entre las figuras. Tampoco tienen unas raíces claras -flotan en el espacio- ni una identidad clara. Es más, casi todas las capillas del nuevo milenio están divididas contra sí mismas, y la división está irónicamente marcada por el arco en el que está

inscrito el esperanzador nombre de la capilla. La parte superior de la capilla es un ámbito, la inferior otro, y el puente entre ambas es el arco con el nombre, pero es difícil de cruzar. Hay una especie de cordón umbilical que va desde la figura negra de la parte inferior de la Solidaridad hasta la blanca de la parte superior: no es precisamente la solidaridad más convincente. ¿Qué tienen que ver los seres de debajo del arco de la Tecnología con el aeroplano de encima del arco y con el aeroplano rojo que parece un pájaro y está en un árbol verde que semeja un animal? De manera similar, ¿qué está haciendo un ser -un extraño animal mutante del que brotan flores- en el ámbito superior de la Educación? Nos opondríamos a ver en él a un ser humano culto. Y ¿dónde están los seres humanos en la Humanidad? El retorcimiento de la figura del registro superior difícilmente sugiere unidad o identidad.

Lo mismo ocurre en la Naturaleza, la Tolerancia y la Igualdad: la humanidad está incompleta, autoalienada y en tela de juicio (y por tanto es ineficaz). Las maravillosas figuras fantásticas de Gabarrón son artificiales y naturales -robóticas y orgánicas- al mismo tiempo, lo cual no

Catholicism is not without its psychological awareness, as its differentiation between the seven cardinal sins and the seven cardinal virtues indicates, and Gabarrón’s work is profoundly psychological, whatever the social idealism of the new millennium wall. I want to suggest that the new millennium wall deals with what the psychoanalyst Erich Fromm calls the human needs and the old millennium wall deals with what he calls the inhuman needs that appear when the human needs are not satisfied.17 ‘Artificially produced, these [inhuman] needs are meant to draw [man’s] attention away from his true human needs.... Alienated man and a society characterized by alienation [modern urban society] create artificial needs that enslave the individual even more and thus alienate him increasingly from his own needs because they make him the means for the satisfaction of others’ needs.’ The human or existential needs are: the need for relatedness; the need for transcendence, involving the need to transcend ‘the state of the passive creature,’ that is, ‘the role of being merely created’; the need for rootedness, involving ‘planting new roots for...existence’; the need for an experience of iden-

tity or unity; the need for a frame of orientation and an object of devotion, involving the need for ‘an object of ‘ultimate concern’,’the theologian Paul Tillich’s term; and finally the need for effectiveness, an effective person being ‘one who has the capacity to do, to effect, to accomplish something.’

Now the fundamental character of Gabarrón’s Chapel is its split character. It is divided against itself, as the abrupt difference between the old and the new millennium walls make clear. The fragmented figure of Christ crucified and the even more fragmented inside heart suggest that this dividedness is absolute and irreparable. Is it possible to say that the chapel leaves us in a limbo between the human and the inhuman needs, suggesting that human beings do not know what they want and who they are? I think so. Painted on the wall above the broken heart is a whimsical death’s-head, ironically displayed between gossamer curtains, with an insect-like creature and a cane (symbolizing old age) as its attributes. One cannot get beyond the human condition—even Christ is subject to death (he’s certainly far from saved on Gabarrón’s

equivale exactamente a que sean humanas.

Lo que falta en las dos paredes de la Capilla -y la razón de que la pared del viejo milenio está llena de violencia y terror (síntomas de alienación social y de autoalienación), aunque hayan sido creadas como mitos (se reflejan en la melancolía subliminal de la pared del nuevo milenio)- son los símbolos de una trascendencia inequívoca. En ningún lugar de la Capilla hay un objeto digno de devoción suprema, de un objeto sublime que sea digno de culto porque encarne la esperanza, es decir, la posibilidad de trascender el sufrimiento de los seres que es inherente a la existencia humana. La aspiración a esa trascendencia es ya autorredentora. En cierto sentido, lo que falta en la Capilla de Gabarrón -y necesariamente es así, a causa de su interés por el futuro de la humanidad más que por una eternidad de cuño religioso- es una figura mágicamente sublime semejante al Cristo resucitado-transfigurado del Altar de Isenheim de Grünewald. Su cuerpo de pura luz es la alternativa mística al cuerpo patológicamente maltratado del Crucificado de Grünewald. Las luminosas ventanas de Gabarrón son similares en su función a dicha figura, pero son abstractas

y materiales, mientras que la figura de Grünewald, por transparente que sea, es real y material, sugiriendo así que la resurrección -la ambición de una conciencia espiritual- es algo más que una ingenua fantasía.

El cuerpo del Cristo de Gabarrón no está patológicamente maltratado, aunque está distorsionado a causa de su postura en la cruz -está hecho del mismo material que la cruz, como para subrayar que la muerte es una parte natural u orgánica de la vida- pero sí expresa desesperación, aislamiento, abandono, vulnerabilidad. La muerte es tradicionalmente simbolizada por una profana mosca, emblema del polvo terrenal en que se entierra a los muertos. Hay una mosca en la frente de san José en una pintura de la Sagrada Familia conservada en el Monasterio de Pedralbes (Barcelona), reveladora de su naturaleza terrenal y de su mortalidad, en contraste con la Virgen María, pura y no profanada; Dostoyevsky menciona la presencia de una mosca en el muro de una cámara mortuoria. Del mismo modo, las moscas profanas de la muy inusual Serie de las Moscas de Gabarrón (1996) están esperando un cadáver purulento del que alimentarse. El descarnado e incisivo realis-

Nowhere in Gabarrón’s Chapel is there any sign of humanistic salvation, that is, the satisfaction of human needs. Instead, there are signs of dissatisfaction and alienation everywhere—even in the chapels of the new millennium.

First of all, all the figures of the new millennium are as surreally weird and absurdly distorted—suggesting their self-alienation—as the figures of the old millennium. They may belong to different epochs, and respond to their situations in different ways—less violently—but they remain disturbingly monstrous. It seems no accident that Liberty is symbolized by a dragonfly, which whatever else it might mean, is a creature that, like all natural creatures, acts instinctively, that is, without the freedom that is part of the meaning of being human. Nature is personified by the green plant-like—hardly human—creature beneath the dragonfly (which has green wings and legs confirming its naturalness).

In Peace and Solidarity we have what might be called proto-human beings, but some are partially green, suggesting that they remain bound

to nature, and all are more or less fragmented, suggesting that they are far from whole. Peace and Solidarity seem tentative—not clearly established—as the distance between the figures suggests. They are also not clearly rooted—they float in space—and have no clear identity. Indeed, virtually every one of the new millennium chapels is divided against itself, with the divide ironically marked by the arch on which the hopeful name of the chapel is inscribed. The upper part of the chapel is one realm, the lower part is another realm, and the bridge between them is the named arch, but it is hard to cross it. A kind of umbilical cord reaches from the black figure in the lower part of Solidarity to the white figure in the upper part—not exactly the most convincing solidarity.

What do the creatures below the arch of Technology have to do with the airplane above the arch—and the bird-like red airplane is trumped by an animal-like green tree? Similarly, what is a creature—a strange mutant animal sprouting flowers—doing in the upper realm of Education? One would except to see a cultured human being. And where are the human beings in Humanity? The twistedness of the figure

mo de la Serie de las Moscas, como el de los Autorretratos de la Muerte y la Serie de las Calaveras -calaveras y moscas que expresan el carácter profano de la muerte- es intrínsecamente español. El realismo español tiene una capacidad especial para sugerir que lo que se está haciendo, más que simplemente describir la realidad, es interrogarla y diseccionarla de una manera implacable y escéptica. Comunica una conciencia crítica, no cotidiana y pedestre, de la realidad. El realismo español acentúa el instinto epistemofílico- es hiperconsciente- en el acto de expresar la conciencia del instinto de muerte.

Lo que es más crucial, el Cristo de Gabarrón está completamente desnudo, como para indicar que es pura naturaleza, que es imposible trascender el cuerpo. Refinar o idealizar, en un esfuerzo para sugerir esa trascendencia, es algo existencialmente inauténtico. Gabarrón reduce el taparrabos tradicional -que da a entender que la carne de los seres, ejemplificada por los órganos sexuales masculinos, símbolo de la lascivia aún más a causa de la crudeza orgánica de su aspecto, puede ser negada, cuando no trascendida (lo “bajo” y lo natural pueden ser tras-

cendidos por lo “alto” y lo espiritual, cuando no transformados en ellos)- a otro plano liso del cuerpo. La cubrición de la sexualidad de Cristo se convierte en un detalle anónimo más, no especialmente destacado y mucho menos evidente, podríamos decir una estribación banal en un escarpado terreno montañoso. Gabarrón convierte el cuerpo de Cristo en una especie de abrasado paisaje español, como sugiere su aspecto pardo y erosionado. Ni siquiera Cristo escapa a la naturaleza.

La naturaleza es el permanente interés de Gabarrón y todos los cuerpos forman parte de ella para siempre.

No parece casual que el fondo del Cristo crucificado lo formen unas filas de gallos sombríos -tocados por la muerte, podríamos decir- como hemos observado como anterioridad. ¿Son otras tantas representaciones subversivas del espíritu santo? Parecen subversivos porque los gallos de Gabarrón, melancólicos, domésticos y pegados a la tierra, a diferencia de la luminosa paloma blanca en vuelo triunfal que tradicionalmente simboliza al espíritu santo, tienen en efecto las alas cortadas.

Yo percibo una cierta ironía sardónica en el uso de los gallos por parte

in the upper register hardly suggests unity or identity. It is the same in Nature, Tolerance, and Equality—humanity is incomplete, self-alienated, and in doubt (and thus ineffective). Gabarrón’s wonderfully fantastic figures are artificial and natural—robotic and organic—simultaneously, which is not exactly to be human.

What is missing on both walls of the Chapel—and the reason why the old millennium wall is full of violence and terror (symptoms of social and self-alienation), however mythopoeticized (they echo in the subliminal melancholy of the new millennium wall)—are symbols of unequivocal transcendence. Nowhere in the Chapel is there an object worthy of ultimate devotion—a sublime object truly worthy of worship because it embodies hope, that is, the possibility of transcendence of the creaturely suffering inherent in human existence. Aspiration to such transcendence is already self-redemptive. In a sense, what is missing in Gabarrón’s Chapel—and necessarily so, by reason of its concern with the future of humanity rather than with religiously conceived eternity—is a magically sublime figure similar to the resurrected/transfigured

Christ in Grünewald’s Isenheim Altarpiece. His body of pure light is the mystical alternative to the pathologically brutalized body of Grünewald’s crucified Christ. Gabarrón’s luminous windows are similar in function to such a figure, but they are abstract and immaterial while Grünewald’s figure, however transparent, is real and material, thus suggesting that resurrection—the ambition of spiritual consciousness—is more than a naive fantasy.

The body of Gabarrón’s Christ is not pathologically disturbed, however distorted by reason of its position on the cross—it is made of the same wood as the cross, as though to signal that death is a natural or organic part of life, with human death no more than an example of universal death—but it does convey despair, isolation, abandonment, vulnerability. Death is traditionally symbolized by a profane fly, emblematic of the earthly dirt in which the dead are buried. There is a fly on the forehead of St. Joseph in a painting of the Holy Family in the Monestir de Pedralbes in Barcelona, signaling his mundaneness and mortality—in contrast to the clean, unprofaned Virgin Mary—and

de Gabarrón como fondo para la figura de Cristo: Gabarrón ha convertido a éste en una especie de gallo en medio de un campo de plantas muertas, insinuado por la proliferación de gallinas alineadas y bien apretadas formando ordenadas filas. Esto es tal vez una interpretación excesiva, pero todo en la Capilla de Gabarrón conspira inconscientemente para trastocar la fe cristiana en la inmortalidad (entendida como prueba y señal de trascendencia, según la entiende Fromm). Al reciclar una capilla católica como una capilla humanista, Gabarrón no puede dejar de poner en duda la ideología cristiana, es decir, cuestionar la incuestionable fe en Dios. El Dios de Gabarrón, en efecto, está muerto en el sentido nietzscheano, aun cuando su hombre no haya nacido totalmente como hombre -espiritualmente puro y libre por estar más allá de la naturaleza. El Cristo de Gabarrón es “de madera” en más de un sentido: es una construcción cubista sin adornos -en marcado contraste con los extravagantes corazones de dentro y fuera de la puerta principal de la Capilla, que están hechos de palpitante metal y pintados o patinadosmenos emocionalmente significativa que el sufriente corazón humano.

El corazón de Gabarrón es un cosmos crudo, tempestuoso, curvado hacia fuera, mientras que su Cristo está construido de planos lisos, que corroboran su planitud emocional, por mucho que los planos se entrecrucen y solapen para formar un ansioso relieve. El Cristo de Gabarrón es irremediablemente pasivo en comparación con el angustiado corazón, que sufre para dar a luz a la esperanza. Sin embargo, aunque difícilmente constituiría un objeto ideal de devoción -es demasiado patente su naturaleza de víctima del mundo y de sí mismo-, sí posee un cierto atractivo estético-místico por su cuerpo astutamente cubista. The stark, incisive realism of the Flies Series, like that of the Death Self-Portraits and the Skulls Series—skulls and flies convey the profanity of death—is quintessentially Spanish. Spanish realism has the special quality of suggesting that reality is ruthlessly and skeptically being interrogated and dissected rather than simply described. It conveys critical consciousness of reality rather than everyday, matter-offact consciousness. Spanish realism heightens the epistemophiliac instinct—it is hyperconscious—in the act of conveying awareness of the death instinct.

More crucially, Gabarrón’s Christ is stripped naked, suggesting that he is all raw nature—that the body cannot be transcended. To refine or idealize, in an effort to suggest transcendence of it, is existentially inauthentic. Gabarrón reduces the traditional loin cloth—implying that creaturely flesh, epitomized by the male sexual organs, all the more

symbolic of lust by reason of their organically raw appearance, can be denied if not transcended (the ‘low’ and natural can be hidden by the ‘high’ and spiritual, if not transformed into them)—to another flat plane of the body. The covering on Christ’s sexuality becomes one more anonymous detail, and a not particularly outstanding let alone noticeable one—a trivial foothill, as it were—in what is in effect a rough mountainous terrain. Gabarrón turns Christ’s body into a kind of parched Spanish landscape, as its brown, eroded look suggests. Not even Christ escapes nature. Nature is Gabarrón’s abiding interest, and every body belongs to it forever.

It seems no accident that rows of shadowy—death-infected, as it were— hens form the background to the crucified Christ, as previously noted.

Are they so many subversive renderings of the holy ghost? Si esto es así, los seres surrealmente biológicos de Gabarrón son espirituales y culturales sólo de manera incompleta, pues no se han separado de la naturaleza lo suficiente para tener necesidades específicamente humanas. En efecto, están alienados de su propia humanidad, aunque sean aparentemente humanos. Escribe también Ortega y Gasset: “La cultura, o la razón, se ha refinado hasta el último extremo, casi hasta el punto de separarse de la vida espontánea, la cual, por su parte, se ha quedado igualmente aislada pero en un estado rudimentario y casi nativo”. La Capilla del Milenio de Gabarrón hace pensar que el cristianismo no ha sido capaz de superar este “estado de tensión extrema” conciliando los opuestos de una cultura razonable y una espontaneidad nativa -o, como los llamó T. S. Eliot en su descripción de

la “disociación de la sensibilidad”, que consideraba epidémica en el mundo moderno, los opuestos de raciocinio y sentimiento (consciencia y emotividad)- permitiendo así la plena aparición de lo humano y con ello el reconocimiento y la satisfacción de unas necesidades exclusivamente humanas.

This is perhaps an overinterpretation, but everything in Gabarrón’s Chapel unconsciously conspires to subvert the Christian belief in immortality (understood as a sign and proof of transcendence, in Fromm’s sense). Recycling a Catholic Chapel into a humanistic chapel, Gabarrón cannot help but cast doubt on Christian ideology, that is, question unquestioning faith in God. Gabarrón’s God is indeed absolutely dead, in the Nietzschean sense, even if his man is not yet fully born as man—spiritually pure and free because beyond nature. Gabarrón’s Christ is ‘wooden’ in more ways than one: an unadorned Cubist construction—in sharp contrast to the extravagant hearts on the inside and outside of the Chapel’s front door, which are made of palpitating metal and painted or patinated—he is less emotionally significant than the suffering human heart. Gabarrón’s heart is a raw, stormy, eccentrically curved cosmos, while his Christ is

constructed of flat planes, confirming his flat affect, however much the planes intersect and overlap to form an anxious relief. Gabarrón’s Christ is hopelessly passive compared to the agonized heart, laboring to give birth to hope. Nonetheless, while he is hardly the ideal object of devotion—he is too completely a victim of the world and himself—he does have a certain mystical aesthetic appeal by reason of his cunningly Cubist body. If a sacred object is a symbol of the ultimate inwardness necessary for self-redemption, and if mysticism aims to achieve such ultimate inwardness, in recognition that without it there is no salvation, then Gabarrón’s Christ is a by-product of aesthetic mysticism, suggesting that the body can only be transcended in and through artistic imagination. Gabarrón’s Chapel subsumes Christian iconography and narrative in modernist aesthetics—a sort of Surrealist Cubism—suggesting that they are less to the emotional point than such aesthetics, and thus that art rather than religion is the only way to salvation, however ironic the salvation that art offers.

S. Eliot called them in his account of the ‘dissociation of sensibility’ that he thought was epidemic in the modern world, the opposites of ratiocination and sentiment (mindfulness and emotionality)—thus allowing for the full emergence of humanness and with that the recognition and fulfillment of uniquely human needs.

Gabarrón struggles to effect the reconciliation—his spontaneity tends to be aboriginal, but he refines its expression, but never to the last decadent degree, and uses it to bring cultural symbols to emotional life—but it is not always clear that he succeeds. He seems to, but it also seems impossible to effect a reconciliation of instrumental reason and spontaneous feeling in modern society. Its functioning depends on their separation, indeed, the repression of spontaneous feeling by instrumental reason, and with it numbing compliance to instrumental reason. Nor does the new millennium hold much promise of effecting such a reconciliation—it is not likely to be more reasonably human in its culture than the barbaric old millennium mythopoetically pictured by Gabarrón—if my reading of Gabarrón’s Chapel is correct.

More subtly, they are all pure nuance, suggesting that there are no absolutes, representational or otherwise. As the epigraph from Viktor von Weizsäcker asserts, it makes all the difference—humanly as well as aesthetically—whether one is an artist who fearlessly delves into nuances, each a kind of petites perception on a continuum of emotional and intellectual expression, or an artist who constructs unnuanced forms dogmatically claiming absolute verisimilitude, emotional as well as conceptual. The flashing nuances of pure luminosity and blunt darkness in the painterly New York Series and the Rothkoesque scumblings of the morbidly atmospheric Vietnam Series make it clear that Gabarrón is as much a modernist painter as a figurative artist. New York has always inspired modernist painters. The art critic Barbara Rose thought that Abstract Expressionism was in part a response to the many gritty mural-like walls in the city, and Piet Mondrian’s New York paintings are ecstatic responses to its sturdy grid, rationalizing space for human use. Gabarrón’s dynamic, ‘downbeat’ New York Series,

along with his more colorful ‘upbeat’ New New York Series (2003), have also been inspired by the complex mix of raw excitement and structured space that is New York City at its most abstract and self-contradictory.

In a sense, the New York Series and the Vietnam Series represent the antipodes of Gabarrón’s experience of America. The former acknowledges its seemingly anarchistic vitality—nowhere more evident than in New York City—while the latter acknowledges the tragedy of Vietnam, engulfing America in gloom and inner conflict, so much so that it almost loses all perspective on itself and the world. New York City seemed to have unsettled Gabarrón when he lived in it, liberating his creativity while it destabilized him. He pictures the city in all its unsettling glory, its grid agitated and broken, the pieces no longer fitting together. The center does not hold, as the poet W. B. Yeats said. Indeed, there is no center in the modern world symbolized by the city. Gabarrón’s New York Series suggests that the city is a puzzle that cannot be solved. If one compares such representations of the modern city as Umberto Boccioni’s Futurist allegory The City Rises (1910) and George Grosz’s

Dadaist satire Metropolis (1920)—in the former the city is barely under human control, an untamed animal driven by blind instinct, however much it is built by human beings, while in the latter it is chaotically grotesque, suggesting that human emotions are dangerously out of control in it—one realizes that Gabarrón’s New York Series distills the anarchic, restless essence of the modern city as neither Boccioni nor Grosz do. The New York Series has more than a hint of the harshness and violence evident in their paintings. But the abstract vehemence and concentrated intensity of Gabarrón’s non-objective works do the city greater emotional and conceptual justice than their seemingly objective representations of it. The city seems to have gone crazy in the New York Series, suggesting the anxiety of living in it. Its apparent disintegration into an abstract hodge-podge suggests its irreversible disintegrative effect on the self.

The Vietnam works are more subdued, more calmly accepting, more overtly tragic in mood. But there is also something tragic in the bleak darkness erupting in the New York Series. Incipient depression mingles

with overt dread, creating an uncanny sense of emotional disarray.

Gabarrón’s New York works are manic and depressive at once—a roller coaster ride of contradictory feelings. The agitating dread has abated in the Vietnam Series, and the deepening depression has softened into brooding melancholy. Contradictoriness continues to exist, but it is more broadly conceived. Instead of spreading all over the canvas like a conflagration as it does in the New York works—the sharply contrasting, if sometimes intersecting nuances of vitalizing light and oppressive darkness, of gestural hatching and opaque emptiness, both dancing above the abyss, fill every inch of space, suggesting a profound horror vacui—contradictoriness reduces to the deceptively simple division of space effected by the horizon line in the Vietnam works. Light streaks across a black void, a spontaneous gesture in an indifferent—emotionally dead and unresponsive—cosmos, ostensibly bridging heaven and earth, but without reconciling them. There is as little integration in the Vietnam Series as in the New York Series, however less obviously disintegrated—clearly less unstructured—the former may be.

En la fantasía, la realidad objetiva es dialécticamente absorbida por la realidad subjetiva, dando la vuelta a la idea convencional de su rela-

ción, la creencia de que aquélla es más importante que ésta. De este modo, la fantasía -como el matiz- critica acerbamente la realidad oficialmente dada y rígidamente concebida. Tanto la fantasía como el matiz son intrínsecamente inconformistas, indecorosos y flexibles: insistente e insidiosamente anticonvencionales y, por lo tanto, desde el punto de vista del mundo práctico cotidiano, socialmente irresponsables. Pero ver el mundo de una manera extravagantemente fantástica, estéticamente matizada -diferenciada en extremo, hasta el punto de tornarse caprichosamente inconcluyente-, como hace Gabarrón, equivale a darse cuenta de que todo intento de conceptualizarlo dogmáticamente, es decir, de encajarlo a la fuerza en un lecho de Procusto intelectual y emocional, es un fracaso en cuanto a humanidad y a consciencia. Una visión abierta y matizada de la vida, que hace de ella una fantasía crítica consigo misma, es la antítesis inconciliable de una ordenación de ella cerrada, ideológica, superficialmente realista. But whatever the difference in their mood and structure, the point I want to make is that both series are triumphs of pure painting, the New York Series by reason of its assertive gestural nuances, the Vietnam Series by reason of its nuanced fields of atmospheric color, and haunting colorlessness. What has been lost in pictoriality—the imaginative pictoriality of Gabarrón’s figure—has been gained in the intensity of Gabarrón’s nuanced response to his medium. In a sense, his fantasy figures are an attempt to balance pictoriality and responsiveness to the medium—the abstract intricacy of his metamorphosizing figures correlates with his nuanced exploration of his material, whether malleable metal or fluid paint, organic wood or inorganic mosaic tesserae. It is worth noting that nuance and fantasy have a certain anti-authoritarianism, and with that a subliminal humanism, in common. Von Weizsäcker has made the anti-authoritarian and humanistic implications of nuance clear. The French thinker Roger Caillois argues that fantasy is also anti-authoritarian and defiantly humanistic: ‘The fantastic is always a break in the acknowledged order, an irruption of the

inadmissible within the changeless everyday legality.’ Nonetheless, fantasy has a certain relationship to the seemingly natural order of things.

As the English literary critic John Aldington Symonds writes, ‘The fantastic... invariably implies a certain exaggeration or distortion of nature. What we call fantastic in art results from an exercise of the capricious fantasy, playing with things which it combines into arbitrary, non-existent forms.’ The English literary scholar Rosemary Jackson adds: ‘Fantasy re-combines and inverts the real, but it does not escape it: it exists in a parasitical or symbiotic relation to the real.

The fantastic cannot exist independently of that ‘real’ world which it seems to find so frustratingly finite.’19 In fantasy objective reality is dialectically subsumed by subjective reality, thus standing the conventional assumption about their relationship—the belief that the former is more significant than the latter—on its head. Thus fantasy—like nuance—is sharply critical of officially given, rigidly conceived reality. Both fantasy and nuance are inherently nonconformist, indecent, and flexible—insistently and insidiously

unconventional, and thus, from the point of view of the everyday practical world, socially irresponsible. But to see the world in an extravagantly fantastic, aesthetically nuanced—highly differentiated, to the extent of becoming capriciously inconclusive—way, as Gabarrón does, is to realize that every attempt to dogmatically conceptualize it, that is, force it to fit an intellectual and emotional procrustean bed, is a failure of humanity as well as mindfulness. An open-ended nuanced approach to life, turning it into a fantasy critical of itself, is the irreconcilable antithesis of a close-minded, superficially realistic, ideological ordering of it. Nuances and fantasies are subversive cracks in the dam absolutist thinking attempts to build to hold back the unexpected contingencies and emotional intricacies of experience. Nuances and fantasies make it clear that life is more complex and subtle than any ideology or theory— and the line between them often blurs—can imagine.

I suggest, speculatively, that Gabarrón’s aesthetically nuanced fantastic figures are an anti-authoritarian protest just as his humanizing of a once Catholic chapel is a protest against the authoritarian ‘eternalism’

of the Catholic Church. Gabarrón’s bizarrely naturalistic figures are hardly saints. Even more speculatively, I suggest that Gabarrón’s wild fantasy, lively nuance, and broad emphasis on natural growth, however strange the growth may be, are an unconscious protest against the rigidity, stagnancy, and repression of the fascist Spain in which he spent the first half of his life (he was born in 1945). Growth and creativity were stunted and stifled in Franco’s Spain, and Gabarrón was determined to grow and be creative—to let his natural creativity flourish— even if the art that grew from his creativity seemed absurd, as it had to in the dead-end of fascist Spain. Gabarrón’s metamorphosizing figures symbolize a Spain that has gone through a difficult process of re-creative growth and change. The freedom, spontaneity, and assertiveness with which he responds to his medium represents the freedom, spontaneity, and assertiveness that were squelched in fascist Spain. No Spanish reserve for Gabarrón—a reserve reinforced by social repression. Gabarrón does not stand on ceremony, but throws caution to the winds, perhaps nowhere more conspicuously than in his Erotic Series,

It is because Gabarrón refuses repression, personal and social, that he pushes the human form to its organic limit, almost dissolving it in his organic feeling for his medium. Gabarrón gives it the same aesthetic fundamentality than Leonardo gave the wall whose nuanced surface stimulated his imagination to give birth to all kinds of fantastic figures and scenes. The material medium became a mirror in which he saw his unconscious. Perhaps this is the basic reason Gabarrón is a grand modern master.

Cristóbal Gabarrón is a citizen of the Mediterranean town of Mula, near the capital of the region of Murcia, although in artistic terms we can consider him a son of that generation of Spaniards who generously gave of their expressive imagination so that the history of Contemporary Art would also have its own name in the Spain of the twentieth century’s latter half.

In spite of the political situation of immobility and social repression that prevented the country from advancing at all levels, certain groups of artists, aware of the new movements and new aesthetics being freely generated outside its borders, wanted to express themselves through a cry of liberty expressed in the spontaneity of the challenging art that slipped between their fingers. Against this backdrop, creating abstract art in the

escapaba de entre sus dedos. Sobre este escenario, hacer arte abstracto en los años cincuenta era algo más que adoptar una estética, suponía un compromiso social.

Ante tales circunstancias adversas que arremetían contra estos jóvenes, integrantes de los diferentes grupos que formarían la abstracción española, alzaron su voz y talento para vigorizar el arte contemporáneo español.

Y, a pesar de las dificultades reinantes, gracias a su lucha desbordante y a su actitud crítica, consolidaron lo que se vino a llamar el “informalismo”, un movimiento reconocido y admirado mundialmente.

Estos breves, pero fructíferos años, fueron suficientes para dejar constancia de su indudable aportación al arte español de nuestro tiempo. Tal es así que en el IVAM existe una colección estable, elegida con un firme criterio, que pretende dar coherencia histórica a los esfuerzos creativos y a los logros estéticos de una generación de artistas, por lo que en sí misma se ha convertido en un consistente homenaje a estos creadores que se manifestaron con contundencia para potenciar un estado del espíritu dentro del arte español.

En esta convulsa esfera artística encontramos a un emergente Cristóbal Gabarrón que desea buscar su espacio en el arte, razón por la que comienza a introducirse en la figuración e hiperrealismo para superarlo inmediatamente seducido por técnicas, estéticas y corrientes que están revolucionando el arte fuera de España.

Gabarrón estaba decidido a crecer y a ser creativo por lo que se dedicó a la pintura de forma ininterrumpida a partir de 1964 año en el que ofreció su primera muestra compuesta por cuadros figurativos influido principalmente por la naturaleza y el entorno rural de los campos de Castilla debido a su infancia vallisoletana; sin embargo, rápidamente evolucionó hacía la abstracción, pasando por la corriente informalista. Así, encontró el camino en el que ha ido después ahondando hasta crear un estilo de pintura propio e inconfundible. “Si pusiéramos mi obra seguida desde el 65 hasta hoy”, dice Gabarrón, “podríamos observar una continuidad absoluta que la ha hecho reconocible”.

Desde aquellos, donde comienza a darse a conocer, su prestigio irá incrementándose hasta llegar a ser considerado en la actualidad, por la crítica

1950s was something more than adopting an aesthetic approach; it was rather a social commitment.

It was in such adverse circumstances that these youth -the members of the different groups that formed the Spanish abstraction- raised their voices and talents to fill contemporary Spanish art with vigour. Despite the reigning difficulties and thanks to their overwhelming fight and critical attitude, the consolidated was to be known as “informalism”, a world renowned and admired movement.

These short but fruitful years were sufficient to print the mark of their undeletable contribution to the Spanish art of our time. Such is the case that in the IVAM we can find a permanent collection, chosen under firm criteria, that intends to offer historical coherence to the creative efforts and aesthetical achievements of a generation of artists and this in itself pays constant homage to those creators who expressed themselves so assertively to impulse a state of the spirit within Spanish art.

Within this convulsive artistic sphere we come across an emerging Cristóbal Gabarrón who wishes to find his space in art and therefore del-

ves into figuration and hyper-realism, immediately overcoming it because of the seduction of techniques, aesthetics and currents that were revolutionising art outside Spain.

Gabarrón was decidedly set on growing and on being creative and he thus wholly committed himself –in an uninterrupted way- to painting from 1964 onwards, year in which he offered his first exhibition made up of figurative paintings, influenced mainly by nature and the rural surroundings of the fields of Castilla because of his childhood in Valladolid.

However, he quickly evolved towards the abstract, passing through the informalist trend. He thereby came to the path which he later followed and deepened in until he created his own non-confusable painting style.

“If we put all my work together one after another from 1965 up to today,” says Gabarrón, “we could observe an absolute continuity that has made it recognisable.”

Since those years, when he started to become known, his prestige kept growing t such a point that he is nowadays considered, by international critics, one of the most representative creators of recent generations of

internacional, como uno de los creadores más representativos de las últimas generaciones de artistas españoles. De modo que esa búsqueda incontrolada por ampliar sus conocimientos le llevó en el año 1986 a Estados Unidos donde, desde entonces vive y trabaja, aunque muy pegado a España donde reside largas temporadas.

Su pintura, cargada de simbolismos, está llena de formas insinuantes que producen en nosotros la sensación de inquietud. Sus obras nos animan a tratar de descifrar un mensaje lleno de ambigüedades y dobles sentidos, que el pintor nos muestra en múltiples imágenes cargadas de provocación.

Sobre todo aquellas, que son las más en su obra, que tienen que ver con la figura humana, con el cuerpo en todos sus estados. Sus cuerpos quieren expresar pluralidad de ideas, variedad de estados emocionales, raudal de pensamientos racionales o irracionales por lo que, en todo ese proceso, la forma y la carne se metamorfosea, se va modificando, alterando, descubriendo nuevos elementos internos.

A este respecto García de Ángela, dice:“Busqué lo que ya conocía de Gabarrón, le robé tiempo, palabras y algunas pinceladas. Encontré aque-

llos personajes... Son ídolos vivos que desparraman el sexo sobre un paisaje protector, envolvente, donde apenas hay sitio para uno. Sus gestos cuentan una historia de tensión permanente, un ladrido, ¿de placer o de dolor?”.

Efectivamente, el cuerpo como símbolo en Gabarrón tiene una fuerza extraordinaria dado que sus trazos compositivos, a primera vista ingenuos, desvelan una asombrosa naturaleza comprometida con la vida. Así, la figura humana, siempre ambigua y enigmática, se convierte en su leit motive, hecho que no nos resulta extraño una vez conocido su uso en los años 60 y 70 como bandera y refugio para la experimentación artística por movimientos como fluxus, body art, performancers… y, sobre todo, habiendo sido ésta parte indispensable para la concepción del arte de todos los tiempos. Además, en las ultima década del siglo XX y principios del XXI vuelve a retomarse con fuerza aunque con perspectivas distintas puesto que ahora el cuerpo no hace sino que plantear incógnitas sobre su propia corporeidad, síntoma que podemos intuir en los modelos de Gabarrón.

Como comenta Alexis McFadyen, “parece ser que la pintura actual de Gabarrón, tal como resulta de su obra última, pretende reflejar median-

Charged with symbolism, his painting is full of insinuating shapes that produce within us a sensation of restlessness. His work encourages us to try to decipher a message which is full of ambiguities and double meanings that the painter shows us in multiple images full of provocation.

Especially those, which are most frequent in his works, which are related to the human figure, with the body in all its states. His bodies try to express a plurality of ideas, a variety of emotional states, full of rational or irrational thoughts and therefore, in the whole process, the shape and the flesh is metamorphosed, it is modified, alternated and discovers new internal elements.

In this regard, García de Ángela, says: “I looked for what I already knew of Gabarrón, I robbed him of time, words and some strokes. I found those characters. They are living idols that bestrew their sex on a protecting,

enwrapping landscape where there is hardly room for one. Their gestures tell a story of permanent tension, a barking of pleasure or pain?”

Effectively, the body as a symbol in Gabarrón has extraordinary force since his composing strokes, at first sight ingenuous, unveil an incredible human nature, committed to life. Thus, the human figure, always ambiguous and enigmatic, becomes his leit motif, something which is not surprising to us when we know of its use in the 1960s and 70s as a standard and refuge for artistic experimentation for movements such as fluxus, body art, performancers… and, above all, having been indispensable for the conception of art throughout history. Furthermore, in the last decades of the 20th century and the beginning of the 21st century it has once again gathered strength although with different perspectives because the body now only offers non-cognitive reflections on its own corporality, a symptom which we can deduce from Gabarrón’s models.

As Alexis McFadyen comments, “it seems that Gabarrón’s current painting, as we can see from his last work, intends to reflect –through the use of geometric figures and fluctuating stains- human existence conditioned

te figuras geométricas y manchas fluctuantes, a la existencia humana condicionada por esta sociedad tecnológica que nos ha tocado vivir.”

Siendo así, podemos entender al cuerpo que representa Gabarrón como una entidad compleja no ya estructura y unificada como en décadas anteriores, sino que ahora se reconoce asediado por los avances científicos acerca de la inteligencia artificial, la genética, la clonación, las nuevas tecnologías y un largo etcétera de progreso tecno-científicos. Este nuevo modelo anatómico ha perdido su naturaleza e ingenuidad, incluso su caducidad debido a esta nueva fase de expansión científica que ha generado una cultura de lo “posthumano” que ya se ha dejado ver en algunas exposiciones en estos últimos diez años.

En estos parámetros descubrimos a las figuras de Gabarrón reinventándose constantemente empujadas por una fuerza interior, originada por un exterior volátil, que forman un entramado de representaciones formales simbólicas que pueden ser el embrión de un nuevo ser. En medio de estas circunstancias Gabarrón quizás se siente obligado, de manera inconsciente, a componer, a través de sus figuras humanas, la identidad de un inci-

piente ciudadano, que se siente acechado, desorientado, turbado, intranquilo, sito en un mundo posthumano donde ha perdido todas las referencias tradicionales… razón por la cual la metamorfosis y la desfiguración en los cuerpos son práctica habitual en su obra desde la que representa diferentes iconos que ayudan a reconocer la tipología de los nuevos tiempos.

Según Louise Johns, “Es esta capacidad de Gabarrón para generar símbolos lo que mejor define la obra de este maestro contemporáneo, capaz de integrar en una única obra de arte toda la carga conceptual asociada a un hecho conmemorativo, un sentimiento universal, o cualquier otra manifestación de la actividad del hombre de hoy.”

En sus cuadros expone una reflexión y la transmite con tal intensidad, que hace dudar al espectador de hasta que punto el arte, es para él, no sólo un instrumento de comunicación, sino también una vía de escape de tensiones interiores y de deseos.

Su obra, caracterizada por una fuerte personalidad, sencilla y a la vez compleja, en continua lucha como es propio de su persona, esconde en cada trazo, en cada uno de los colores que emplea, un mensaje con lectura pro-

In that case we can see the body that Gabarrón represents as a complex entity, not structured and unified as in previous decades, but thirsty for the scientific advances of artificial intelligence, genetics, cloning, new technology and a long list of techno-scientific progress. This new anatomical model has lost its nature and ingenuity, even its out-datedness because of this new phase of scientific expansion that has generated a “post-human” culture that has been seen in several exhibitions over the last 10 years.

Within these parameters we discover Gabarrón’s figures constantly reinventing themselves, pressed by an inner force, originating in the outer volatility that make up a mesh of symbolic, formal representations than can be the embryo of a new being. In the midst of these circumstances Gabarrón may feel forced, unconsciously, to compose –through his human figures- the identity of an incipient citizen who feels stalked, disoriented, confused, restless, situated in a post-human world where he has lost all his traditional references… and thus the metamorphosis and the disfiguration of the bodies are a common practice in his work from which eh represents

different icons that help to recognise the typology of the new times.

According to Louise Johns, “It is this ability of Gabarrón’s to generate symbols which best defines the work of this contemporary master, able to integrate in one same work all the conceptual load associated with a commemorative event, a universal feeling, or any other manifestation of the activity of mankind today.”

In his paintings he exposes a reflection and transmits it with such intensity that it makes the spectator doubt to what point art may be considered for him not only a communication instrument, but also a means of escaping from the inner tensions and desires.

His work, characterized by a strong personality, simple while at the same time complex, in a continuous struggle as is characteristic of his person, hides in each stroke, in each one of the colours he uses, a message with a meaning of its own. His creation, far from any artistic current and tendency, dynamic par excellence and on occasions violent, is composed of interior mazes and multidimensional landscapes that can lead to several types of interpretations.

pia. Su creación, alejada de toda corriente y tendencia artística, dinámica por excelencia y en ocasiones violenta, se compone de laberintos interiores y paisajes pluridimensionales que se prestan a varios tipos de interpretación.

El reconocido teórico del arte, profesor y crítico Fernando Castro, lo expresa con otras palabras: “La obra de Cristóbal Gabarrón se ha distinguido hasta el momento del resto de los discursos contemporáneos por su singularidad. A lo largo de casi tres décadas ha pasado por casi todos los lenguajes, siempre en una constante búsqueda de nuevas experiencias con las que dotar de un argumento diferenciador su particular estética”.

En este sentido, la de Gabarrón es una generación que mantiene una empatía que irradia en el estilo que define y que, aunque no tiene mucho que ver con los temas, los estilos o las técnicas que emplearon, sí se identifican con la génesis de una ilusión: el triunfo de la abstracción, como sus colegas europeos o norteamericanos. Existen, como digo, enormes diferencias que hacen del trabajo de cada uno de ellos un mundo distinto expresado con un lenguaje propio e inconfundible, pero aun así existen muchas similitudes ya que se mueven por idénticos ideales y preocupaciones.

La expansión de esta corriente en España se puede sintetizar en cinco grupos que polarizarán este esfuerzo a pesar de que Gabarrón no se alienase en ninguno de ellos: Dau al Set en Barcelona, El Paso en Madrid, Parpalló en Valencia, Gaur en Vitoria y la fundación del Museo de Arte Abstracto Español en Cuenca.

Estos grandes pioneros de la abstracción despejaron el camino a una multitud de creadores de distintas especialidades, en diferentes países del mundo. Por ejemplo la arquitectura del Movimiento Moderno fue una consecuencia, de los experimentos plásticos de carácter «abstracto».

En Europa, al amparo de la filosofía existencialista y aún bajo los traumáticos efectos de la II Guerra Mundial, un amplio espectro de experiencias abstractas que tiene sus orígenes en el año 1952 como consecuencia de la exposición Signifiants de l’informel organizada en París por Michel Tapié, rompe con los últimos reductos del humanismo clásico y sus principios pictóricos más significativos: la forma, la armonía tonal, el equilibrio, las proporciones, la composición unitaria y la estructuración centralizada.

The well-known art theoretic, professor and critic, Fernando Castro, expresses it in other words: “Cristóbal Gabarrón’s work has distinguished itself to date from contemporary discourse owing to its singularity.

Over nearly three decades he has gone through almost all the languages, always on a constant search of new experiences with which to offer his particular aesthetics a differentiating argument.”

In this sense, Gabarrón’s is a generation that maintains an empathy that irradiates in the style he defines and, although it has little to do with the topics, the styles or the techniques used are identified with the genesis of an illusion: the triumph of the abstract, like his European or North American colleagues. There are, as I say, tremendous differences that make each one’s work a distinct world expressed in a language of their own that is not possible to confuse but there is still a lot of similitude that is moved by identical ideals and concerns. The spread of this current in Spain can be synthesised in five groups that polarise this effort in spite of the fact that Gabarrón does no align himself to any of them: Dau al Set in Barcelona, El Paso in Madrid, Parpalló in Valencia, Gaur in Vitoria and

the Museo de Arte Abstracto Español Foundation in Cuenca.

These great pioneers of the abstract cleared the way for a multitude of creators of different specialities in different countries of the world. For example, the architecture of the Modern Movement was a consequence of the artistic experiments of an “abstract” nature.

In Europe, under the shade of the existentialist philosophy and still suffering from the traumatic effects of World War II, a wide spectrum of abstract experiences that had their origin in the year 1952, as a consequence of the exhibition entitled Signifiants de l´informel organised in Paris by Michel Tapié, broke off from the latest redoubts of classical humanism and its most significant pictorial principles: shape, tonal harmony, equilibrium, proportions, unitary composition and centralised structure.

We are facing what has been called informalism and, although it has been often used as a catchall in which to include the most varied tendencies, this artistic trend was introduced into Spain in the decade of the 1950s by Juan Eduardo Cirlot and by the translation of texts by the French critic Tapié.

Estamos ante lo que se ha llamado informalismo y aunque se ha utilizado con frecuencia como cajón de sastre donde incluir las más variadas tendencias, esta corriente artística se introdujo en España en la década de los cincuenta de la mano de Juan Eduardo Cirlot y de los textos traducidos del crítico francés Tapié.

En este clima de acción europea, diferenciado de la corriente que se consolida en Norteamérica, así, las obras que componen el estilo abstracto español no son ni expresionismo abstracto americano, ni abstracción lírica francesa; tampoco Op art o constructivismo, aunque se aprecien, en cada una de ellas, rasgos de una u otra corriente. Por encima de estos rasgos se distingue un sello muy español que ha sido rastreado por los críticos e historiadores en la pintura de El Greco, Ribera, Velázquez o Goya, en el pensamiento trágico y místico de nuestros poetas y el temperamento, mitad fogoso mitad sobrio, del carácter español.

De este modo, existen enormes diferencias que hacen del trabajo de cada uno de ellos un mundo distinto expresado con un lenguaje propio e inconfundible, pero aun así existen muchas similitudes ya que se mueven por idénticos ideales y preocupaciones.

Francis Bacon comentó en alguna ocasión que la verdadera complejidad de un cuadro estaba en encontrar su lugar preciso en el lugar de las obsesiones. En el caso de Gabarrón son las respuestas a las preguntas íntimas las que realmente dan forma a la obra. No le interesa tanto el proceso técnico de cómo se desarrolla la obra tanto como el que le lleva a intuir ciertas respuestas. Pero, como afirma el artista, “éste es un proceso complicado porque cuando uno cree tener esas respuestas, resulta que no es así.

Y vuelvo una vez y otra al lugar de la pregunta”.

“Gabarrón con sus imágenes trata de formar de nuevo una dimensión del tiempo y del espacio circular, en el sentido de una totalidad recuperada, capaz de contener dentro de sí pasado, presente y futuro entrelazados en una sustancia especial y fluida y al mismo tiempo firme.”, dice Achille Bonito Oliva. Y es que en el arte es siempre fundamental mirar hacia atrás, al pasado, porque todo sirve. Nosotros somos la memoria de lo que hemos aprendido. En esto es igual que la ciencia, que toma lo que conoce y lo va intentado perfeccionar.

In this climate of European action, differentiated from the trend that was consolidating in the United States, the pieces that make up the Spanish abstract style are neither American abstract expressionism nor are they French lyrical abstract; neither are they Op art or constructivism, although in each of them we can appreciate aspects of one current or another. Above these aspects we can distinguish a very Spanish seal that has been traced by critics and historians in the paintings of El Greco, Ribera, Velázquez or Goya, in the tragic and mystical thought of poets and the half-spirited, half-sober temperament of the Spanish character.

In this sense there are tremendous differences that make the work of each one of them a world apart, expressed with their own language which is impossible to confuse. However, there are still many similarities since they are moved by the same ideals and concerns.

Francis Bacon commented on one occasion that the real complexity of a painting was finding its precise place with respect to obsessions. In the case of Gabarrón, it is the answers to intimate questions that real shape his work. He is not as interested in the technical process of how the work

is carried out but more the process that leads him to supposing certain responses. However, as the artist states, “this is a complicated process because when one thinks he has the answers, that’s not the case. I go back time and again to the question.”

“Gabarrón with his images tries to give shape to a new dimension of time and circular space, in the sense of a recovered totality, able to contain within it the past, present and future, intertwined in a special and firm substance which is at the same time firm,” says Achille Bonito Oliva. In art it is always fundamental to cast a glance backwards, to the past, because everything is useful. We are the memory of what we have learnt.

In this way it is the same as science, which takes what it knows and tries to improve it.

The real apotheosis impulse to abstract art, where Gabarrón is well situated, definitely didn’t come about until after World War II with the birth of some movements, the culminating point of which brings us to the 1950s and 1960s. The abstract tradition had an important revival in the United States at the end of the 1940s with Action Painting and Colour-Field Painting.

La tradición abstracta conoció un importante renacer en Estados Unidos a partir de finales de los años cuarenta con el Action Painting y con el Colour-Field Painting.

Estos procesos pictóricos son rápidamente interiorizados por Gabarrón quien participa de ellos y los hace trascender, los modifica desde su universo particular hasta sentirse cómodo e incluso declararse defensor a ultranza del graffiti, que considera la más representativa forma de expresión del presente siglo. Por esta razón, por su constante exploración y dinamismo el artista murciano evoluciona hacia un terreno inclasificable hasta tal punto que Charis Gresser dice de él que es uno de esos artistas que están en vanguardia, precisamente por no hacer, por no querer, por no intentar ser vanguardia. Está dentro de las tendencias más avanzadas de su generación por hacer siempre la pintura que él cree que debe hacer y sobre todo la pintura que a él le gusta hacer.

Esta decidida forma de expresión le lleva a cultivar en muchos momentos

de su trayectoria la pintura mural un tipo de representación artística en la que se siente satisfecho ya que en ella encuentra una relación directa entre las antiguas técnicas de pintura muralista y frescos empleadas desde la época prehistórica, pasando por el Renacimiento, hasta la nueva modalidad que se recoge en la arquitectura e inmobiliario urbano de todas las ciudades del mundo: los graffitis. Esta es una muestra más del carácter proteico de Gabarrón quien ha dado muestras siempre de su pasión por la investigación y el desarrollo como cimientos imprescindibles para evolucionar en su imparable carrera profesional.

El exceso de pasión que existía, tanto en el expresionismo abstracto norteamericano como en el informalismo europeo, produjo una especie de reacción, originándose desde principios de los años sesenta otra corriente que algunos denominaron abstracción postpictórica y otros cool art. Se trataba de un intento de controlar el gesto emotivo mediante la práctica de una pintura «no subjetiva» cuyas raíces se situaban en el arte geométrico sistemático de la Europa de entreguerras. Gabarrón no es ajeno a ninguna de estas reacciones plásticas, sólo que una vez más él se mantie-

These pictorial processes were rapidly interiorised by Gabarrón who participated in them and transcended them, modifying them from his particular universe until he felt comfortable and even declared himself to be a defender in extremis of Graffiti, which he considers the most representative form of expression of the current century. Therefore, because of his constant exploration and dynamism, this artist from Murcia evolved towards and unclassifiable terrain to such a point that Charis Gresser said of him that he is one of those artists that are in the vanguard, precisely for not doing, for not wanting, for not trying to be in the vanguard.

He is to be found within the most advanced tendencies of his generation because he always makes the painting he believes he should and, above all, the painting he likes to make.

This decisive form of expression, in many moments of his trajectory, has brought him to cultivate mural painting as a form of artistic representation in which he feels satisfied since in it he finds a direct relationship between the ancient techniques of mural painting and fresco used since prehistoric times, passing through the Renaissance up to the modality to be

found on current-day urban architecture and fittings in all cities throughout the world: graffiti. This is but another protean sample of Gabarrón’s work, an artist has always shown signs of passion for research and development as the necessary foundation to evolve in his unstoppable professional career.

The excessive passion that existed, both in North American abstract expressionism and in European informalism, created a type of reaction, setting off at the beginning of the 1960s another trend that some called post-pictorial abstraction and others referred to it by the name of cool art. It was an effort to control the emotive gesture through “non-subjective” painting, the roots of which were to be found in the systematic geometric art of Europe between the wars. Gabarrón is not distanced from any of these artistic reactions; it is just that once more he is to b found firm in his independence, feeding from multiple disciplines but using autonomous art that is difficult to compare.

With informalism and abstract expressionism, he therefore abandons his easel and brushes to get a more direct, more intense relationship with his

ne firme en su independencia, absorbiendo de múltiples fuentes pero extrayendo un arte autónomo y de difícil comparativa.

Con el informalismo y el expresionismo abstracto, por tanto, se abandona el caballete y los pinceles para obtener una relación más directa con la obra, más intensa, como si el artista quisiera penetrar literalmente en el lienzo para encontrar respuestas en el propio interior del cuadro y no a través de él.

En palabras de Agnes Martín “todo puede ser pintado sin ser representado” por lo que podríamos argumentar que en toda abstracción hay implícita una sintaxis poética personal.

Toda abstracción en el sentido que ha sido “abstraída” –extraída- de la realidad, y llevada, a través de un proceso intelectual y técnico a otro medio: el artístico, representa la imagen del mundo interior del artista o al menos su proyección, declarados a través de un tratamiento personalizado y original de sus valores expresivos. En este caso diremos que en la obra de Cristóbal Gabarrón no existe ninguna deferencia, ninguna sujeción al imperio de las cosas exteriores, sino la sublimación, la afirmación de la

capacidad comunicativa del hecho pictórico por sí mismo. Al respecto, M. A. García Noceda, con quien comparto su reflexión, afirma que “Cristóbal Gabarrón es una referencia abstracta de la realidad o es la propia realidad decantada por un tacto sutil que busca el gajo esencial de las cosas.”

De un modo u otro, parece claro que el arte abstracto, lejos de ser un fenómeno histórico surgido de repente en la urgencia de algunos años clave, es el fruto de una maduración progresiva a lo largo del siglo XIX. Lejos de separarse de la realidad, la abstracción ofrece desde este ángulo una traducción nueva, más sintética, del mundo visible.

En la llamada abstracción lírica destacó Wassily Kandinsky (1866-1944) que aunque sus primeras obras son figurativas y describen formas estilizadas de colores intensos, su pintura se transformó hasta lograr una abstracción madura, donde las formas y los colores -según su autor- responden a una necesidad interior. El artista dedujo que en el arte abstracto la forma y el color son el lenguaje para expresar una emoción y comunicarla al igual que se logra con el sonido en la música. Paul Klee en su obra también manifestó ese carácter intuitivo.

work, as if the artist wanted to literally penetrate the canvas to find answers within the inner painting and not through it.

I the words of Agnes Martín, “everything can be painted without being represented” for which reason we could argue that in every abstraction there is an implicit personal poetic syntax.

All abstraction, in the sense that it is has been “abstracted” –extractedfrom reality and taken through an intellectual and technical process to another means: the artistic, represents the image of the inner world of the artist or at least its projection, stated through a personalised and original treatment of his expressive values. In this case we would say that in Cristóbal Gabarrón’s work there is no difference, no subjection to the empire of external matter, rather sublimation, an affirmation of the communicative ability of the pictorial activity itself. In this regard M. A. García Noceda, with whom I agree on his statement, says that, “Cristóbal Gabarrón is an abstract reference of reality or reality decanted by a subtle sense of touch that looks for the essential root of things.”

In one way or another it seems clear that abstract art, far from being an historical phenomenon that suddenly appeared in the urgency of some key years is the fruit of progressive maturing throughout the 19th Century. Far from separating itself from reality, abstraction offers from this perspective a new, more synthetic translation of the visible world.

In the so-called lyrical abstraction, Wassily Kandinsky (1866-1944) highlighted that although his first works were figurative and described stylised shapes of intense colours, his painting was transformed until he achieved a mature abstraction, where the shapes and colours –according to the artist- respond to an inner need. The artist deduced that in abstract art the shapes and colours are the language to express an emotion and communicate that in the same way we manage to do it with the use of sound in music. Paul Klee in his work also highlights this intuitive character.

In his manifesto piece entitled The Spiritual in Art (1940), Vasili Kandinski defended the need of each painting, whether figurative or otherwise, to provoke the expressive ability of the artist and the sensibility of the spectator. It may perhaps be in the difficult harmony between

Vasili Kandinski, defendió en su obra-manifiesto De lo espiritual en el arte (1940) la necesidad que tiene toda pintura, figurativa o no, de provocar la capacidad expresiva del artista y la sensibilidad del espectador.

Y tal vez sea en la difícil armonía de luz y color que supone lo abstracto donde mejor se manifiesten estas condiciones, sin las cuales es imposible el ansiado contacto entre la obra de arte y el alma humana. Una de sus ideas fundamentales es que el efecto físico del color suscita una vibración anímica, y ésta, a su vez, permite la asociación con otros sentidos.

Afirmaba que “En general, el color es un medio para ejercer una influencia directa sobre el alma. El color es la tecla. El ojo el macillo. El alma es el piano con muchas cuerdas. El artista es la mano que, por esta o aquella tecla, hace vibrar adecuadamente el alma humana”. Según esta idea, el sonido básico interior, es decir, la emoción espiritual puede suscitarse mediante recursos cromáticos, lo cual no excluye la existencia eventual de un tema en el que pueda apoyarse la pintura propiamente dicha.

Kandinski estaba convencido, sin embargo, de que el triunfo de la abstracción en un futuro próximo era inexorable.

Buscando antecedentes que inspiraron a quien muchos consideran el padre de la abstracción, encontramos la obra inicial de Henri Matisse, que también exploraba la belleza serena del color, e influyó en gran medida en el tipo de pintura abstracta que practicaron otros pioneros de la vanguardia artística, como Robert Delaunay (1885-1941).

Estimulado también por el cubismo y por el dinamismo optimista de los futuristas, practicó hacia 1912 una forma de abstracción con colores vivos, muy libremente organizados en torno a una estructura geométrica bastante elemental. El poeta Guillaume Apollinaire etiquetó estos trabajos como «orfismo». No se trataba de expresar emociones complejas, sino de transmitir la impresión de que la luz se descompone en maravillosas irisaciones cristalinas. Este propósito lo consiguió admirablemente con sus «Ventanas». No es muy diferente el efecto que producen algunos cuadros del pintor suizo Paul Klee (1879-1940). Como muchos de sus colegas alternó los trabajos figurativos con los abstractos, algunos de los cuales evidencian el gusto de este artista por las delicadas transparencias y por las armonías de tipo «musical».

light and colour that the abstract involves where we can find these conditions, without which it is impossible to establish the longed-for contact between the work of art and the human soul. One of the fundamental ideas here is that the physical effect of colour brings about an positive vibe and this in turn allows the association with the other senses.

He stated that, “In general colour is a means to exercise a direct influence on the soul. Colour is the key and the eye is the mallet. The soul is a piano with many strings. The artist is the hand that, by pressing one key or another, makes the human soul vibrate adequately.” According to this idea, the inner basic sound, that is to say spiritual emotion, can be livened through chromatic resources, which does not exclude the eventual existence of a topic on which the painting itself can be based. Kandinski was convinced, however, that the triumph of abstractionism was unalterable in the near future.

Looking through those things which inspired whom many consider to be have been the father of abstractionism, we come across an early piece by Henri Matisse which also explores the serene beauty of colour and discover that it

also influenced a great deal the type of abstract painting which other pioneers of the artistic vanguard made, such as Robert Delaunay (1885-1941).

Also stimulated by cubism and the optimistic dynamism of the futurists, towards 1912 he practised a form of abstractionism with lively colours, very freely organised around a geometric structure which was quite elementary. The poet Guillaume Apollinaire labelled these pieces “orfism”.

It wasn’t about expressing complex emotions, but rather about transmitting the impression that light decomposes in marvellous crystalline irisations. He achieved this objective admirably in “Windows”. The effect produced by some of the paintings of the Swiss painter Paul Klee (18791940) is not very different. Like many of his colleagues, he alternated figurative pieces with abstract ones, some of which evidenced the taste the artist had for delicate transparencies and for “musical” type harmonies.

Undoubtedly, Gabarrón has studied well the works of these masters of the emotions and in a definite manner wishes colour to be a preliminary element in his artistic construction since there are two main characteristics of this painter who is moved, we could say, within the current of colour

Sin duda Gabarrón ha estudiado bien los trabajos de estos maestros de las emociones y de una manera rotunda desea que el color sea un elemento preliminar en su construcción artística puesto que dos son las principales características de este pintor que se mueve, podríamos considerar, dentro de la corriente del color por el color. De un lado su profunda sensibilidad que le permite usar colores y tonos con gran maestría y de otro su dominio técnico de la composición.

“Una pintura debe ser la comunicación de las experiencias expresadas.

Gabarrón pinta los colores del sentimiento.” Afirma con precisión Mª Aurora Viloria.

El colorido con que Gabarrón impregna sus piezas es alegre, brillante, intenso y la variedad de las texturas, -rayadas, salpicadas, unidas- confiere a las superficies un aire musical que las dota de un misterio que invita al recorrido circular entorno a ellas.

Y es que para el pintor, “lo único verdadero son los colores. Un cuadro no representa nada más que colores” como afirmaba Cézanne, por lo que queda manifiesto que es el elemento plástico por antonomasia, la quintae-

sencia de lo pictórico; con él se logran, en efecto, los valores llamados “pictóricos”; es decir, el carácter sustancial de la pintura.

El color es más confuso que la línea; es enigmático en las sensaciones que despierta en el espectador ya que va dirigido directamente a los sentidos. Por sus profundos y misteriosos poderes, el color se convierte en el vehículo de la expresión del pintor, pues éste formula antes las sensaciones que el pensamiento. Algunas escuelas pictóricas se han enfrentado en una apasionante dialéctica entre la línea (elemento intelectual) y el color (elemento sensorial), como fundamento de la creación pictórica; recuérdese el caso extremo, y con reflejo en las fuentes literarias, la disputa entre la escuela florentina y la escuela veneciana, dentro de la pintura del Renacimiento italiano.

El color ha contribuido en buena medida a acentuar la imitación de la naturaleza en el arte, añadido a la forma encerrada en el contorno, ha ido como compañero de viaje del modelado, con la posible función de acentuar la sensación de realidad y verismo.

for the purpose of colour. On the one hand, we find his profound sensitivity which allows him to use colours and tones with great mastery and on the other his technical dominion of composition.

“A painting must be the communication between expressed experiences.

Gabarrón paints the colours of feeling,” correctly states Mª Aurora Viloria.

The colouring with which Gabarrón impregnates his pieces is happy, brilliant, intense and the variety of textures – striped, splashed united – confers a musical air on the surfaces that gives them a mystery that invites one to move around them in circumambulation.

For the painter, “the only real thing is colour. A painting represents nothing else but colours,” Cézanne stated. It is therefore clear that it is the antonomasia artistic element, the quintessence of the pictorial; with it, effectively, the values called “pictorial” are achieved, that is to say, the substantial character of the painting.

Colour is more confusing than lines; it is enigmatic I the feelings it awakens within the spectator since it is directly aimed at the feelings.

Because of it deep and mysterious powers, colour becomes the vehicle of

the painter’s expression as this creates sensations before thoughts. Some schools of painting have faced each other in a passionate dialectic between the line (intellectual element) and colour (sensorial element), as a fundamental aspect in pictorial creation. Here we can remember the extreme case, also reflected in literary sources, of the dispute between the Florentine school and the Venetian school within Italian Renaissance painting.

Colour has contributed in an important way to highlighting the imitation of nature in art. Adding to the enclosed shape of the contour, it has been like a travel companion for modelling, with the possible function of accentuating the feeling of reality and verismo.

On perceiving colour, one’s own experiences and feelings come into play, including one’s evocations. Kandinsky, as we previously mentioned, said that shape itself, even though it may be abstract or geometric, has an inner harmony and the shape always contains the colour. In this regard, we could say that if we think about colour we don’t see the colour by itself, it must be within a shape. Every nuance, every colour, generates more images.

inclusive evocaciones. Kandinsky, como ya apuntabamos anteriormente, dice que la forma misma, aunque sea abstracta o geométrica, tiene sonoridad interna, y siempre la forma contiene al color, vale decir que si se piensa en un color no se ve por el color mismo, sino que debe estar dentro de una forma. Cada matiz, cada color, genera más imágenes.

Indudablemente el color en Gabarrón es un medio para expresar y construir ideas a través de las imágenes. De todas estas interacciones o simbolismos en la ejecución de una de sus obras se producen sensaciones diversas en el espectador, en cuanto al color elegido, en cuanto a la atmósfera, a la textura y a la luz. Cada una de ellas logra exaltar la calidad y cualidad de todos los elementos ubicados en la composición.

El color en el imaginario de Gabarrón nos produce sensaciones, sentimientos, nos transmite mensajes a través de códigos universales, nos expresa valores, estados de ánimo, situaciones… porque finalmente y tal como expresó en uno de sus principios Isaac Newton (1642-1519): la luz es color, y en la pintura del artista murciano sobresale entre otras muchas cosas por su luminosidad.

Me gustaría retomar de nuevo las siempre bien medidas palabras de Fernando Castro quien ha señalado que “desde la década de los ochenta Gabarrón ha intensificado sus planteamientos plásticos, en una estética en la que domina lo figurativo, bien es verdad que a partir de estilizaciones y deformaciones personalísimas, sin duda, su posición contextual es, una vez más, heterodoxa, en una época en la que las propuestas neoexpresionistas o transvanguardistas fueron cediendo terreno ante la ofensiva del postconceptualismo o, sobre todo, de una ortodoxia curatorial que venía a impugnar, como anacrónica, cualquier práctica caracterizada por lo representativo”.

Se puede decir que Cristóbal Gabarrón es un verdadero creador, por encima de formas o clasificaciones, lo que se demuestra por su dedicación tanto a la pintura como la escultura, el mural, los objetos, la instalación, el grabado, las intervenciones arquitectónicas y urbanas… Dice de él José Arese que “es el artista que ha logrado la unión perfecta entre la figuración y la abstracción”.

La crítica internacional ha alabado su capacidad para ir a lo esencial con

Undoubtedly, the colour in Gabarrón’s works is a means to express and construct ideas through images. All these interactions or symbolisms in the execution of one of his works produce diverse feelings in the spectator, with respect to the colour chosen, the atmosphere the texture and light. Each on of them manages to exalt the characteristic and quality f all the elements to be found in the composition.

Colour in Gabarrón’s imaginarium creates feelings within us, it transmits messages to us through universal codes it expresses values to us, emotional states situations,… because finally, and as expressed in one of Isaac Newton’s (1642-1727) principles: light is colour, and in the painting of this Murcia artist this stands out a lot more than other things because of its luminosity.

Once more I would like to take up the always carefully measured words of Fernando Castro who has pointed out that “since the decade of the 1980s, Gabarrón has intensified his artistic approaches, in an aesthetics in which the figurative dominates although it is true that from very personalised stylisations and deformations, without a doubt his contextual position is,

once more, heterodox, in an epoch in which the neo-expressionist or transvanguard proposals yielded ground to post-conceptualist offensive or, above all, to a curatorial orthodoxy that impugned, as an anachronistic, any practice characterised by what was representative.”

We can say that that Cristóbal Gabarrón is a real creator of shapes or classifications, which is shown by his dedication to painting and sculpture, murals, objects, installations, engravings, architectonic and urban interventions… José Arese speaking of him, says that “he is the artist who has managed to create perfect unity between figuration and abstractionism.”

International critics have praised his ability to go to the essential wit maximum simplicity. L. Arroyo has written: “The deepest satisfaction of an artist is being able to make and that that singular creation be useful to others, those who today tomorrow and the day after ca fee some of the emotions and share some of the feelings that Cristóbal Gabarrón leaves tattooed”.

The Murcia artist maintains a commitment to art that goes beyond the fruit of his work, which, owing to his intense relationship with North America, brought him to set up a first Foundation in Valladolid in 1992.

la máxima simplicidad. L. Arroyo ha escrito: “La satisfacción más profunda de un artista es poder hacer, y que esa creación tan singular pueda serle útil a los demás, a los que hoy, mañana y pasado mañana podrán sentir alguna de las emociones y podrán compartir alguno de los sentimientos que Cristóbal Gabarrón deja tatuados”.

El artista murciano mantiene un compromiso con el arte que va más allá del fruto de su obra ya que, y debido a su intensa relación con Norteamérica, le llevó en 1992 a crear una primera fundación en Valladolid. “Me di cuenta que debía fijarme en la sociedad estadounidense, que se articula de una manera civil que propicia la creación de fundaciones. En este sentido, el origen de crear las fundaciones que llevan mi nombre, mi compromiso con el arte, se basa en dos cuestiones básicas para mí: que la educación y la cultura hacen al hombre libre y que creo que las fundaciones tienen muchas cosas que ofrecer y que decir y deben (en temas de cultura, por ejemplo) ocupar ese terreno que los gobiernos están invadiendo”. Su deseo final es devolver a la sociedad una parte de lo que ésta le da y materializarlo con ayudas a la creación joven y a la educación.

Gabarrón es por tanto un humanista, no sólo por sus preocupaciones éticas y solidarias, que muestra, entre otras acciones, con el impulso de su fundaciones, sino porque su propio arte tiene siempre en cuenta al hombre, sus deseos, sus miserias, sus alegrías, sus gozos, sus tragedias, sus luces y sus sombras.

Me gustaría terminar este artículo con una frase de Cristina Jalonch que acierta y resume la trayectoria de Gabarrón cuando que el artista “va a la profundidad a través de la simplicidad, eliminando formas inútiles, desnudando superficies y volúmenes, acercándonos una realidad destellante.”

“I realised that I should set my eyes on American society, that is articulated in a civil way that impulses the creation of foundations. In this respect, the origin of creating foundations that bear my name, my commitment to art, is based on two basic questions for me: that education and culture make man free and I believe that the foundations have much to offer and say and must (in areas such as culture, for example) take over that ground that governments are invading.” His ultimate wish is to give back to society a part of what this has given him and to materialise this by helping young creators and education.

Gabarrón is thus a humanist, not only because of his ethical and solidarity concerns that he shows, among other actions, by giving an impulse his foundations, but also because his own art always takes mankind into consideration, his wishes, miseries, happiness, enjoyment, tragedies lights and shadows.

I’d like to end this article with a phrase by Cristina Jalonch that specifies and summarises Gabarrón’s trajectory when the artist “goes to the profound through the simple, eliminating useless shapes, uncovering surfaces and volumes, bringing us closer to a glittering reality.”
