Siempre que encaramos el final de la primavera la redacción y todo el equipo humano que hace la revista sienten algo especial con el número dedicado a los festivales. El contacto a diario con multitud de promotores, programadores y gente de comunicación nos permite ver como han ido evolucionando las propuestas. La historia de cada festival es independiente, pero se desarrollan dentro de un mismo universo, estigmatizado por recortes en años anteriores y que empieza a ver la luz.

Whenever we approach the end of the spring the editorial staff and the whole team with the magazine feels something special towards the issue dedicated to the festivals. Daily contact with all the promoters, organizers and PR people allows us a first-hand look at how the shows are shaping up. The history of each festival is all its own, but they unfold within a common universe. With a damper put on them by budget cuts in the preceding years, they're now starting to see some light at the end of the tunnel.

Por todo ello ver en nuestra portada a La Mar de Músicas es un honor. El ciclo que desde hace dos décadas nos revela las distintas músicas del mundo es un objeto de culto en Cartagena, y un orgullo para todos, cuando ampliamos el ámbito geográfico. Nuestro sincero aplauso un año más a Francisco Martín.

Thus, featuring La Mar de Músicas on our cover is a real honor for us. The event, which for two decades has been bringing us musics from all around the world, enjoys a cult following in Cartagena, and is a point of pride for everyone when we extend our geographical scope. Our hats off, once again, to Francisco Martin.

Junto a la cita de Cartagena saboreamos el valor de lo clásico en Alcalá de Henares. La ciudad complutense sigue cumpliendo en cada edición las expectativas más exigentes. Bajo la mirada y consejo de Cervantes todo debe ser más sencillo.

Along with the Cartagena event we savor the classics in Alcalá de Henares, whose festival continues to meet the high expectations set for it every year. Under the gaze and counsel of Cervantes, everything must be easier.

Otras de las citas inevitables este verano: Festival de Mérida, Festival de la Guitarra de Córdoba, Festival de Jazz de Getxo y Certamen Internacional de Habaneras y Polifonías de Torrevieja. Hemos aprovechado para charlar con Vetusta Morla, que capitanearán un sinfín de citas a lo largo del verano. Pero no todo son festivales, y la agenda de Madrid se prepara la llegada del verano, que parece haberse perdido por el camino. Como siempre multitud de opciones a las que llegar a bordo de un taxi.

Other not-to-be-missed attractions this summer: El Festival de Merida, the Cordoba Guitar Festival, the Getxo Jazz Festival and the International Polyphonic Song and Habaneras Festival. We seized the opportunity to chat with Vetusta Morla, the band that will be topping marquees throughout the summer. But there are more than just festivals out there, as Madrid prepares for the arrival of the summer, which seems to have gotten lost along the way. As always, plenty of options to choose from - and you can get to all of them in a taxi.

Madrid se viste de Pop antes de que empiece el verano. El Museo Thyssen, veinte años después de la primera muestra de Arte pop, reúne más de cien obras para ofrecernos una nueva perspectiva. La muestra pretende rastrear las fuentes comunes del pop internacional y realizar una revisión de los mitos que tradicionalmente han definido al movimiento. El objetivo es mostrar las míticas imágenes de artistas tan significativos como Warhol, Rauschenberg, Wesselmann, Lichtenstein, Hockney, Hamilton o Equipo Crónica, entre otros muchos. Madrid fills up with Pop Art before the summer starts. The Thyssen Museum, 20 years after its first Pop Art exhibition, brings together more than 100 works to offer us a new perspective. The event seeks to identify the common sources of international Pop Art, and reexamine the legendary figures who have traditionally defined the movement, displaying iconic images by major artists like Warhol, Rauschenberg, Wesselmann, Lichtenstein, Hockney, Hamilton and Equipo crónica, among many others. La fuerza del Flamenco vuelve a conquistar Madrid. Suma Flamenca celebra su novena edición, y es uno de los festivales que se definen a la perfección en cifras: 24 espacios, 21 estrenos, 9 de ellos absolutos, 28 representaciones en teatros, y 390 actuaciones. Estos datos entre otros son una buena muestra de que Madrid será, como dice el director, Juan Verdú, “el centro de irradiación del Flamenco, donde artistas y creadores, viven y trabajan, donde grandes teatros y pequeños locales programan flamenco”. The power of Flamenco sweeps Madrid once again. Suma Flamenca celebrates its 9th edition, a festival whose figures speak for themselves: 24 venues; 21 new shows, 9 of them absolute premieres; 28 shows in theaters; and 390 performances. These figures, among others, are a good sign that Madrid will be, in the words of director Juan Verdú: "the Flamenco epicenter, where artists and creators live and work, and where both large theaters and small locales feature flamenco". Siempre una cita recomendable en la que poder adquirir los últimos títulos o conseguir la firma de su escritor favorito. The first two weeks of June are the dates chosen this year for the celebration of the Book Fair. Retiro Park in Madrid once again brings together publishers, writers, readers and lovers of letters at more than 300 booths constituting a little literary universe. Always a worthwhile event at which to acquire the latest works, or get a copy signed by your favorite writer.

El Teatro Real ha organizado una temporada más este ciclo de conciertos y recitales, que ya es un clásico de la programación del coliseo. Pieza clave de los espectáculos del Teatro, Las noches del Real acoge un amplio abanico de intérpretes y cantantes internacionales, cuya calidad y profesionalidad se sitúa en las más altas esferas del panorama lírico y musical. Plácido Domingo, Susan Graham, Thomas Hampson o Isabelle Faust son sólo algunos de los artistas que podremos disfrutar a lo largo de diez meses. The Royal Theatre has organized for yet another year this concert and recital series, already a classic of the venue's annual schedule. MARÍA MORALES Tras su nominación a los Goya por su papel en Todas las mujeres de Mariano Barroso, la actriz cordobesa nos ofrece doble ración teatral de pequeño formato con una obra en La Trastienda, Como si pasara un tren, y un monólogo en El Escondite, Bye Bye Mary Poppins. ¿Qué significa ese título, Como si pasara un tren? Por un lado es una expresión argentina que viene a ser como cuando nosotros decimos “como quien oye llover”. Mi personaje suele decir la frase “¿hablo yo o pasa un tren?”. Y por otro lado, mi hijo en la función, que interpreta Carlos Guerrero, está todo el rato jugando con un tren de juguete. El tren es un símbolo muy importante en esta función.

After her nomination for a Goya for her role in Mariano Barroso's Todas las mujeres (All The Women), the actress from Cordoba offers us two short-format theatrical works at La Trastienda: Como si pasara un tren (As If a Train Were Passing By), and a monologue at El Escondite: Bye Bye Mary Poppins. What does that title mean: As If a Train Were Passing By? On the one hand it's an Argentinian expression that means something like our "como quien oye llover" (“in one ear and out the other”). My character tends to say "¿Hablo yo o pasa un tren?" (“Are you listening to me?”) And then my son in the show, played by Carlos Guerrero, is playing with a toy train all the time. The train is a very important symbol in this work.

¿Y qué hay detrás de ese símbolo? Significa movimiento, sobre todo en lo que se refiere a mi hijo. Es un niño especial y entre madre e hijo se establece una relación de sobreprotección. Independientemente de la problemática que tenga, el chico está muy atado por la madre, porque la madre tiene mucho miedo a lo que le pueda pasar. Y él está todo el rato soñando con viajar en tren, metáfora del deseo de irse, de libertad, de soltarse de las garras maternas.

And what does that symbol convey? It suggests movement, especially with regards to my son. He's a special child, and between mother and son there is a relationship of overprotection. The boy is very attached to his mother, who is afraid of what might happen to him. And he’s always dreaming of travelling by train, a metaphor for leaving, of breaking free from his mother's clutches.

¿Pero son garras realmente? Pues lo malo es que acaban convirtiéndose en garras, pero en realidad son manos y son caricias. El padre les abandonó, les dejó tirados cuando se enteró de que el niño tenía un problema madurativo, y nunca ha querido hacerse cargo de él. Ella lo ha criado sola y es un chico híper cuidado, por miedo fundamentalmente.

But are they really clutches? Well, the bad thing is that they end up becoming clutches, but in reality they are hands, and caresses. His father abandoned them, leaving them when he heard that the child had a developmental problem. He didn´t want to take responsibility. She has raised him alone and he has been very carefully cared for - essentially out of fear.

TRILOGÍA DE LOS FUNDADORES *Catalina / El dominó azul / El diablo en el poder El Teatro de la Zarzuela apuesta este mes de Junio por una original combinación de tres magníficos títulos líricos que fortalecieron el Romanticismo en sus mejores años. Gaztambide, Arrieta y Barbieri fueron los artífices de estas amables intrigas amorosas de aire histórico. El director de escena de todas ellas, Álvaro del Amo, propone destacar los números musicales dentro del desarrollo argumental y mantener la esencia del diálogo —más reducido— que cobra vida en boca de algunos de los personajes que servirán de guías en cada una de estas historias. Se trata, en cada caso, de mantener la relación original entre lo hablado y lo cantado. Abre el ciclo Catalina, ambientada en Finlandia a finales del siglo XVIII donde se narran dos historias de amor a través del intercambio de cartas entre su protagonista homónima y Berta. El dominó azul apuesta, sin embargo, por un único interlocutor, El sastre Valdivieso, que relata los enredos cortesanos de la época en el Palacio del Buen Retiro a mediados del siglo XVII. Por último, en El diablo en el poder es el mismísimo Lucifer quien da cuenta de más intrigas palaciegas en el Madrid de Felipe V.

This June the Teatro de la Zarzuela presents an original combination of three magnificent lyrical works which fueled Romanticism during its era. Gaztambide, Arrieta and Barbieri were the authors of these entertaining productions, featuring amorous intrigues with a historical air. The director behind all of them, Álvaro del Amo, aims to highlight the musical numbers within the plot development and maintain the essence of the dialogue - more reduced - articulated through some of the characters, which serve as guides in each of these stories. The idea, in each case, is to maintain the original relationship between that which is spoken and that which is sung. The three begin with Catalina, set in Finland at the end of the 18th century, where two love stories are narrated through an exchange of letters between the work's eponymous protagonist and Berta. The Blue Domino, meanwhile, has just one interlocutor, the tailor Valdivieso, who shares stories of machinations between courtesans at the Palacio del Buen Retiro in the mid-seventeenth century. Finally, in The Devil in Power it is Lucifer himself who relates even more palace maneuverings, this time in the Madrid of Philip V.

MONTY PYTHON *los maestros del humor absurdo Las propuestas escénicas cada vez son más originales. El teatro, y la feroz competencia en el mundo del ocio, han obligado a realizar combinaciones no exentas de talento, cual camarero ante una botella de ginebra y una tónica. Sobre los escenarios de siempre, transformados en lo que queramos imaginar, estamos muy cerca de ver a un equilibrista sobre un aro llameante, y que a la vez que respira y se concentra para no quemarse, nos recite un poema o incluso una tabla de multiplicar. Todo para llegar a dejar en las caras del público una leve sonrisa tras un escorzo que garantice admiración. Monty Python garantiza esa sonrisa marcada en la cara, podríamos decir que nivel “me lo estoy pasando genial”. Pero se obtiene tras poner a prueba todos los músculos faciales: efectos de la carcajada, como si se lo dijera su médico de cabecera. L´Om Imprebís e Yllana vuelven a aunar fuerzas para traer de nuevo a Madrid una nueva versión del espectáculo que en 2004 consiguió más de 1.000 representaciones. Una recopilación de los mejores sketches será el menú. Seguro que querrán repetir. El humor absurdo, surrealista e ingenioso, es sin duda de digestión agradable. No hay mejor escenario para ello que el Teatro Alfil.

Performing arts offerings are becoming more original. Theater, facing fierce competition from the world of leisure, has been forced to come up with a whole new range of combinations calling for new talents, like an able and ambitious bartender coming up with new ways to mix gin and tonic. At the traditional venues, transformed into whatever we might wish to imagine, one might almost expect to see a tightrope walker poised over a flaming hoop, reciting a poem or even a multiplication table, all while focusing on his breathing and struggling to keep from being engulfed in flames. Anything to put a smile on the audience's faces through feats elicitingtheir admiration. Monty Python guarantees those "I'm having a great time" kinds of smiles on faces, after putting all of one's facial muscles through their paces, as if a doctor had prescribed this regimen. L´Om Imprebís e Yllana once again join forces to bring to Madrid a new version of the show that in 2004 boasted over 1,000 performances. A compilation of the best sketches will be on the bill. You're sure to want to go back. Absurd, surreal and ingenious humor, without any doubt, is good for one's digestion. And there is no better venue for it than the Teatro Alfil.

ANTONIO MOLERO Antonio Molero es uno de los que participan en la difícil y entretenida elección de “El Nombre”. Primero una fácil y repetida ¿Se ha propuesto llamar al niño Fiti o Fructuoso?. Fue una de mis primeras opciones, también barajé Kevin Costner de Jesús… pero para saber la decisión final, mejor acudir al Teatro Maravillas. ¿Cómo está siendo la experiencia en “El Nombre”? Rotundamente positiva, por éxito de público, pero también por formar parte de un equipo de galácticos. El Nombre fue un auténtico éxito en su versión francesa. ¿Se han cambiado muchas cosas en la adaptación, o el problema para elegir el nombre del bebé es igual en Francia y España? El Nombre es y tiene que ser el mismo pero la versión española, a cargo de Jordi Galcerán, es un verdadero acierto. Ahora es una función francesa, castellana, y catalana a partes iguales. Hilarante, afilada, inteligente, mordaz. En estas semanas hemos leído muchos calificativos para definir a esta comedia, ¿qué adjetivo crees que la define mejor? Sorprendente. ¿Cómo nos invita Antonio Molero a ver "El Nombre"?, ¿qué tiene de especial este conflicto familiar? Antonio Molero is one of those involved in the difficult and entertaining choice depicted in The Name. First, an easy and oft-repeated one: Did you think about calling the kid "Fiti" or "Fructuoso"? It was one of my first choices. I also considered "Kevin Costner de Jesus"... but for my final decision you'll have to go the Teatro Maravillas. What has it been like performing in The Name? It’s been a very positive experience, and not only due its success with audiences, but also because I'm part of a team of real stars. The French version of The Name was a smashing success. Were many things changed in the adaptation, or are the problems involved with naming a baby the same in France and Spain? The Name is and should be the same, but Jordi Galcerán really got things right in his Spanish version. Now it is a French, Spanish, and Catalán work, all at the same time. Hilarious, caustic, intelligent, scathing. In recent weeks we have read many adjectives to define this comedy... which one do you think defines it best? Surprising. What would you say to lure people to see The Name? What is special about this family drama? I believe that audiences, comfortably nestled in their seats, will delight at watching a set of characters whose obsession with image and appearance is truly pathetic. There is a guilty pleasure in watching their poses, airs and graces all unmasked... and see the beast lurking inside all of us come out.

*british pop art A partir del 27 de Junio, el Centro de Arte Museo Reina Sofía en colaboración con la Fundación Abertis acoge la mayor retrospectiva hasta la fecha de una de las principales figuras artísticas del siglo XX. Doscientas setenta obras de este genio británico componen una muestra que ha sido concebida específicamente para la pinacoteca madrileña y en la que el propio Hamilton colaboró en la organización hasta su fallecimiento en 2011. Pinturas, grabados, dibujos, fotografías, piezas de diseño industrial creadas a lo largo de más de sesenta años de trabajo (entre 1949 y 2011) permiten conocer como nunca la producción del artista a través de su extraordinaria variedad de medios, técnicas y géneros. No faltan las obras más emblemáticas del autor como su collage Just What is it that Makes Today's Homes So Different, So Appealing (Qué es lo que hace las casas de hoy tan diferentes, tan atractivas), un fotomontaje que está considerado la obra primigenia del pop art. Otras de sus más famosas e icónicas creaciones presentes son la carátula del doble disco White Album de los Beatles o Swingeing London 67, obra en la que Hamilton, asociado a menudo con los acelerados años 60, pintó a Mick Jagger y el marchante de arte Robert Fraser, con esposas, tras una redada antidrogas. Starting on June 27 the Reina Sofia Art Center, in collaboration with the Abertis Foundation, hosts the largest retrospective to date of one of the 20th century's leading artistic figures. 270 works by this British genius make up this exhibition, designed specifically for the Madrid art gallery. Hamilton personally participated in its organization until his death in 2011. Paintings, engravings, drawings, photographs, and industrial design pieces created over the course of over 60 years of work (between 1949 and 2011) make for an unprecedented look at the artist’s body of work, featuring an extraordinary variety of media, techniques and genres. Featured are the artist's most emblematic works, including his collage Just What Is It That Makes Today's Homes So Different, So Appealing, a photomontage that is considered to be the seminal pop art work. Others of his most famous and iconic creations include the cover of the Beatles' double White Album, and Swingeing London 67, a work in which Hamilton, often associated with the frenzied 1960s, painted Mick Jagger and the art dealer Robert Fraser, with their wives, after a drug raid. His series My Marilyn, Interior, The Solomon R. Guggenheim and his Duchamp reproductions form part of an exhibition that promises to be one of the major cultural events of the year.

Cartagena celebra el vigésimo aniversario de La Mar de Músicas. Dos décadas de programación y esfuerzo que han permitido al festival contar con los mejores músicos de los cinco continentes. Una historia que ha situado al festival en primera línea mundial y todos los veranos es una cita imprescindible. Aprovechando el marcado cumpleaños se han planteado dos temáticas: un Especial 20 Años y un Especial Noruega. La inauguración estará protagonizada por Youssou N´Dour. Su romance con el festival le señalaba con el dedo como el ideal para abrir este homenaje propio. Estreno y único concierto en España. La figura más importante de las músicas del mundo rendirá tributo al fallecido Nelson Mandela. Dentro de la programación del Especial 20 años, hay dos episodios que destacan. El premio de La Mar de Músicas a la cubana Omara Portuondo por su gran capacidad interpretativa y por haber sabido transmitir desde todos los escenarios del mundo durante más de 60 años. Recibirá el premio el martes 22 de julio y hará una actuación muy especial acompañada por Santiago Auserón, introductor en España de la música cubana, la Orquesta Buena Vista Social Club, la cantante de Ojos de Brujo Marinah, y una sección de cuerdas de la Orquesta Sinfónica Región de Murcia.

Cartagena celebrates the 20st anniversary of its La Mar de Músicas festival. Two decades of organization and effort that have allowed the festival to offer the best musicians from all across the world. A history that has earned the festival a place as one of the world's best, making it a not-to-be-missed event every summer. Taking advantage of this special birthday two themes have been adopted: a 20 Years Special and a Norway Special. The opening night will star Youssou N´Dour. His romance with the festival made him the ideal candidate for a very fitting tribute: the most important figure in world music will pay tribute to the late Nelson Mandela in what will be a premiere and his only concert in Spain. The 20 Years Special will feature two notable elements. First, the la Mar de Músicas Prize will be awarded to Cuba's Omara Portuondo for her masterful performances, in which she has connected with audiences on stages all around the world for more than 60 years. She will receive the award on Tuesday, July 22, when she will offer a very special performance, accompanied by Santiago Auserón, a pioneer in bringing Cuban music to Spain, the Buena Vista Social Club Orchestra, “Ojos de Brujo” vocalist Marinah, and a string section from the Murcia Symphony Orchestra.

Musicalmente el Especial Noruega está formado por el padre del “nu jazz” Bugge Wesseltoft con su proyecto más reciente “Ok World Ensemble”, los djs Ost & Kjex, el trompetista Nils Petter Molvaer, Erlen Oye, Ane Brun, el cantautor Thomas Dybdahl, la cantante lapona Mari Boine y el dj Lindstrom. Además por Cartagena pasarán grandes de la música contemporánea Ray Davies, Bobby Womack, el último soulman, y los españoles Amaral que vuelven al escenario de La Mar de Músicas después de su actuación en 2001. Gexto acoge durante cinco días un festival que combina la presencia de consagradas figuras con jóvenes promesas del género. La jornada inaugural correrá a cargo de la vocalista Natalia Dicenta quien a lo largo de su carrera paralela a la de actriz se ha ganado el favor de la crítica especializada. Los temas de su primer álbum, Colours, combinan swing, blues y boleros, entre otros géneros. El jueves es el turno de Jack DeJohnette, uno de los principales exponentes del jazz fusión y una de las grandes leyendas de la batería mientras que el viernes la pianista japonesa Hiromi Uehara mostrará con the Trio Project la técnica virtuosa característica de sus enérgicas actuaciones. Las actuaciones del fin de semana se abren con el plato fuerte de Michel Camilo Trio. El pianista dominicano contará para su tercera actuación en Getxo con la colaboración del contrabajista Lincoln Goines y el baterista Cliff Almond. Para la jornada del domingo, el Gexto Festival se despide con el toque flamenco del cantaor Diego el Cigala. Durante los días de celebración del festival, la plaza Biotz Alai acoge las propuestas de las jóvenes bandas que se disputarán el primer premio del Concurso de Grupos. Las actuaciones de la sección "Tercer Milenio" (plaza Estación Algorta), las Jam Sessions en The Piper's Irish Pub y la exposición del fotógrafo José Horna completan la propuesta del Getxo Jazz este año.

An essential jazz event in the Basque country, marking its 38th edition with a star-studded lineup. For five days Getxo hosts a festival that lists leading jazz figures along with up-and-coming artists. Opening day will feature the vocalist Natalia Dicenta, who over the course of her parallel career as an actress has garnered praise from critics. The tracks from her first album, Colours, combine swing, blues and boleros, among other genres. On Thursday it’s time for Jack DeJohnette, one of the most prominent figures in fusion jazz and a legendary drummer, while on Friday the Japanese pianist Hiromi Uehara, backed by her Trio Project, will put on a display of her technical virtuosity in a typically peppy performance. The weekend shows kick off with the Michel Camilo Trio headlining. For her third appearance at Getxo the pianist from the Dominican Republic will play with bassist Lincoln Goines and drummer Cliff Almond. On Sunday the Getxo Festival wraps things up with the flamenco sounds of the cantaor Diego el Cigala. During the Festival the Biotz Alai Square will host shows by young bands competing in the first Battle of the Bands. El lanzamiento de su tercer largo “La Deriva” es protagonista en casi todos los festivales musicales del verano. Charlamos con su guitarrista Juan Manuel Latorre para conocer algo más de ellos. La crítica y el público están señalando “La Deriva” como el mejor de vuestros trabajos ¿cómo lo ve el grupo? Desde dentro siempre es más difícil hacer la valoración. Depende mucho del momento vital. En mi opinión, y con algo de perspectiva, es el trabajo que más sintonía tiene entre forma y fondo. El verano está salpicado de festivales y Vetusta Morla figura en muchos de ellos ¿hay alguno al que le tengáis más ganas? Nos encanta estar en todos. Cada uno tiene su matiz especial. Pero voy a destacar dos. BBK, siempre nos sentimos muy a gusto. Nos llena estar encima del escenario y poder disfrutarlo desde abajo. Y el segundo es el DCODE. Teníamos muchas ganas de vivir un festival en Madrid. ¿Nos recomiendas algún track de modo especial? No hay una canción bandera. Todas dependen un poco del momento de su concepción. Pero como estamos hablando de festivales, vamos a quedarnos con Fiesta Mayor. Perfecta para ir de festival en festival devorando kilómetros. ¿Cuál es tu lugar favorito para perderte en Madrid? Me encanta Malasaña. Durante un tiempo lo tuve abandonado y ahora estoy aprovechando para redescubrirlo. Está en un gran momento de forma, poniéndose a la vanguardia en el siglo XXI.

Vetusta Morla has carved out a place among today's top bands. The launch of their third album, "La Deriva," is the talk of almost all of the summer's musical festivals. We chatted with the group's guitarist Juan Manuel Latorre to find out more about them. Both fans and critics are calling "La Deriva" your best work. How do you see it? From the inside, it's always more difficult to assess it. It depends a lot on what's going in your life. In my opinion, and with a bit of perspective, it's our most congruent work in terms of form and substance. The summer calendar is chock full of festivals, and Vetusta Morla will be appearing at many of them. Is there one you're looking forward to especially? We love all of them. Each one has something special. But I will highlight two. At BBK we always feel very good. It feels great to be up there on the stage, and to be able to enjoy it from below. And the second is the DCODE. We were really looking forward to a festival in Madrid. Is there any one track you really like? There is no one signature song. It all depends a bit on when they were created. But, as we're talking about festivals, I'll mention “Fiesta Mayor.” Perfect to go from festival to festival, racking up the miles. What's your favorite place to escape to in Madrid? I love Malasaña. For a while there I never went, and now I'm taking the opportunity to rediscover it. It's better than ever, on the cutting edge of 20th century trends.

CLÁSICOS EN ALCALÁ *homenaje a Shakespeare en la cuna de Cervantes Desde el 12 de Junio al 6 de Julio, la ciudad de Cervantes acoge la decimocuarta edición de Clásicos en Alcalá. Una nueva cita de este festival organizado por el Ayuntamiento de Alcalá de Henares y la Comunidad de Madrid que convierte durante unos días a la ciudad madrileña en capital del teatro clásico. Este año un total de veintinueve compañías ofrecerán cincuenta y ocho funciones, ocho de ellas estrenos absolutos en once espacios como el Teatro Salón Cervantes, el Corral de Comedias, el Instituto Cervantes o la capilla de San Ildefonso. Como novedad en esta edición y con fin de rendirle homenaje en el cuatrocientos cincuenta aniversario de su nacimiento, numerosas obras de Shakespeare protagonizan la programación. Entremeses de Cervantes, una producción del Teatro de la Abadía dirigida por José Luis Gómez, es la encargada de abrir esta edición en la que no faltan versiones libres como la propuesta que ofrecen Ron Lalá y la Compañía Nacional de Teatro Clásico, En un lugar del Quijote. A destacar también la lectura dramatizada del actor Sergi López, Shakespeare en Benicassim. From June 12 to July 6 the city of Cervantes hosts the 14th edition of its Clásicos en Alcalá, a new edition of this festival, organized by the City of Alcalá de Henares and the Community of Madrid, which transforms the Madrid city into the capital of classical theatre for a few days. FESTIVAL DE LA GUITARRA DE CÓRDOBA *la capacidad de seis cuerdas Los primeros compases del verano en Córdoba están marcados por las melodías de las guitarras. Un año más, con esta suman 34 ediciones, el Festival de Guitarra de Córdoba se convierte en una cita esencial para los amantes de la música que seis cuerdas pueden generar. La organización ha preparado un cartel impecable. Los protagonistas del concierto inaugural: Path Metheny, 20 gramys; y de la clausura: Joe Satriani, considerado como uno de los guitarristas más completos del mundo, son argumentos más que suficientes. Pero el programa no se queda ahí. En el apartado de jazz-rock tenemos que nombrar a Victor Wooten y Mike Stern. Ambos sabrán dotar al Gran Teatro de las melodías propias de noche inolvidables. En el apartado del flamenco, las guitarras estarán bajo las manos de Gerardo Núñez, Dani de Morón y Diego del Morao. Si pensamos en conciertos de Pop-Rock, las opciones son Leiva, el día 5 de julio, y seis días después, Ariel Rot y Loquillo serán los que actúen en el Gran Teatro. Además el Festival piensa en todas las vertientes posibles de la guitarra y contamos con un “ciclo los Clásicos” y otro de “Guitarras de Cámara”. El pilar formativo sigue ganando fuerza y en esta edición la guitarra flamenca comparte protagonismo con sus hermanas en multitud de propuestas interesantes.

Summer dawns in Cordoba to the sounds of guitars. After 34 editions the Cordoba Guitar Festival stands as a not-to-be-missed event for lovers of the sixstringed instrument. This time around the organization has a stellar lineup on tap. For the opening concert: Path Metheny, with 20 Grammys; and for the closing show: Joe Satriani, considered to be one of the world's most complete guitarists. Enough said. But that's not all. In the jazz-rock section Victor Wooten and Mike Stern will be on hand, both filling nights at the Gran Teatro with unforgettable melodies. In the flamenco section guitars will be in the hands of Gerardo Núñez, Dani de Morón and Diego de el Morao, while playing Pop/Rock will be Leiva, on July 5, with Ariel Rot and Loquillo at the Gran Teatro six days later. The Festival covers every possible aspect of the guitar, with a "classics" and "chamber guitars" series. The event's educational efforts continue to gain steam, with flamenco guitar sharing the limelight with a whole series of events featuring other guitar genres.

FESTIVAL INTERNACIONAL DE TEATRO CLÁSICO DE MÉRIDA *tragedias y comedias grecolatinas 2014 es una edición especial para Mérida y Jesús Cimarro, su director. Cumple sesenta años y se ha propuesto conmemorar el bimilenario de la muerte de Augusto. Desde el 2 de Julio, ópera, música, danza, circo y teatro no fallan a su cita anual con el Festival como elemento central de un calendario repleto de actividades paralelas. En total, ocho producciones, siete de ellas estrenos absolutos, a las que hay que añadir la tercera gala de entrega de los premios Ceres. La ópera Salomé, dirigida por Paco Azorín con coreografías de Víctor Ullate, abre el programa. Por su parte, Medusa (La Guardiana) supone el debut en Mérida de Sara Baras. El Conservatorio Superior de Badajoz pondrá en escena Dido y Eneas, la historia de amor del héroe troyano y la reina de Cartago. La Iliada de Homero es uno de los platos fuertes. Llega procedente de Atenas y será la primera vez que se represente en España. Rostros televisivos como Pepe Viyuela y Miriam Díaz Aroca dan vida a la comedia de Aristófanes, Las Ranas. Del mismo autor y dirigida por Magüi Mira es Pluto con Javier Gurruchaga en esta sátira política. Pepón Nieto, Anabel Alonso o Alejo Sauras forman parte de El Eunuco, un texto de Terencio dirigido por Pep Antón Gómez. La siguiente propuesta será Coriolano de la mano de Elias González y María Luisa Borruel mientras que la tragedia griega por eutonomasia, Edipo Rey, será quien cierre la programación.

2014 marks a special edition for Mérida and the event's director Jesús Cimarro. Cimarro, who is turning 60, and aims to commemmorate the death of Augustus. From 2 July opera, music, dance, circus and theatre will be on tap at the annual event, with the Festival as a central element offering a calendar full of activities. In total there will be eight productions, seven of them premieres, in addition to the third Ceres Awards ceremony and gala. The opera Salome, directed by Paco Azorín and with choreography by Víctor Ullate, will get things started. Medusa (The Guardian), meanwhile, will mark the Mérida debut of Sara Baras. The Conservatorio Superior of Badajoz, meanwhile, will stage Dido and Aeneas, the love story of the Trojan hero and the queen of Carthage. Homer’s Iliad is one of the main attractions. A production from Athens being staged in Spain for the first time. Familiar faces from TV like Pepe Viyuela and Miriam Díaz Aroca will bring to life The Frogs, a comedy by Aristophanes. By the same author and directed by Magui Mira will be the political satire Pluto, starring Javier Gurruchaga, among others. Pepón Nieto, Anabel Alonso and Alejo Sauras are set to appear in The Eunuch, a play by Terence, in a production directed by Pep Antón Gómez, who will be looking to make audiences smile. 60 CERTAMEN INTERNACIONAL DE HABANERAS Y POLIFONÍAS DE TORREVIEJA *un aniversario muy especial Ha pasado ya casi un año desde el emocionante punto y final del quincuagésimo noveno certamen, y más de dos años desde que el Patronato se planteó la celebración de la sexagésima edición. Ahora llega el momento. Torrevieja se convertirá del 19 al 26 de julio un año más en la capital mundial del canto coral, y particularmente, de la Habanera. Esta efeméride tan especial tuvo su arranque en el pasado FITUR, donde se anuncio la presencia del Orfeón Donostiarra, que será el encargado de protagonizar la velada de apertura del ciclo. Para esta edición se ha hecho un especial esfuerzo para reunir a los mejores coros que han dejado su nombre en el palmarés del histórico recinto de Eras de la Sal en la última década. La selección de corales elegida por el Patronato cuenta con un total de dieciocho conjuntos que se extienden desde Puerto Rico a Filipinas. Esa distancia en un mapa geográfico remarca el carácter internacional del certamen, considerado el más importante del mundo. Muy lejos queda ya su primera edición en 1955, e incluso sus primeros pasos en el ámbito internacional en los primeros compases de los años 90. El certamen vive un lleno absoluto cada año y en su última noche entrega los premios cerrando la velada, como es habitual, con los himnos de España, Valencia y Torrevieja.

It has been almost a year since the exciting conclusion of the 59th event, and more than two years since the Board began to plan the 60th Edition. Now that time is here. From 19 to 26 July Torrevieja will become, once again, the world capital of choral singing, particularly Habaneras. This year's very special lineup began to take shape at the past FITUR, where the appearance of Orfeón Donostiarra was announced, scheduled to star at the event's opening night. For this edition a special effort was made to bring together the best choruses that have made their mark over the last decade at the historic Eras de la Sal venue. The selection of choirs made by the Board features a total of 18 groups, hailing from Puerto Rico to the Philippines. That distance illustrates the international character of the festival, considered the largest in the world of its kind. It is now a far cry from its very first edition back in 1955, and has even far surpassed its first steps on the international scene back in the early 90s. The festival boasts packed houses every year and an awards ceremony bringing the last evening to a close, with the singing of the hymns of Spain, Valencia and Torrevieja.

esde el año 2004 y durante dos días, la localidad turolense de Mas de las Matas retrocede a su pasado de los siglos XVII y XVIII. Una fiesta en la que revivir la recreación histórica de la toma de posesión de esta villa por los comendadores de la Orden de San Juan de Jerusalén, señores de la encomienda Castellote. Estos actos sirven para materializar visualmente la presencia y dominio en Mas de las Matas de las órdenes militares; primero el Temple y más tarde los caballeros hospitalarios. “La toma de posesión”, “el pleito de la seda” o “el pleito del molino” son sólo algunas de las representaciones que han tenido lugar gracias a las teatralizaciones de los diferentes episodios interpretadas por actores, todos ellos vecinos de la localidad.

Since 2004 for two days the Teruel town of Mas de las Matas has taken a step back in time, to the 17th and 18th centuries, through a celebration reenacting the town's takeover by the comendadores (knight commanders) of the order of St. John of Jerusalem, the lords of the Castellote encomienda (commandery). These acts serve to visually portray the presence and dominance in Mas de las Matas of the military orders; first the Templars, followed by the Knights Hospitaller. "The taking of possession," "the silk uprising," and "the mill uprising" are just some of the town's different historical events depicted in performances, all featuring local actors.
