Dear Patrons, It is truly a unique and exciting time for the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra, and the effects are already reflected in this subscription brochure for 2022-2023. In calendar 2021, the FWSO made two significant artistic appointments: Robert Spano as Music Director, and Kevin John Edusei as Principal Guest Conductor. I cannot imagine two more gifted conductors to lead the FWSO into the next phase of its artistic development. The FWSO also made seven tenure-track appointments in the orchestra, filling vacancies caused by retirements and normal attrition. These outstanding new musicians were recruited from very competitive national auditions, and will help to strengthen the FWSO even further. Financially, the FWSO remains strong. Thanks to the extraordinary generosity of Board Chairman Mrs. Mercedes T. Bass, Mr. and Mrs. John Kleinheinz, the late Rae and Ed Schollmaier, and many other donors, the FWSO was able to realize a modest financial surplus for the 2020-2021 season – while keeping musicians and staff on full pay. This financial stability during the COVID-19 pandemic provides the perfect platform for Maestros Spano and Edusei as they begin their tenure to lead the orchestra to even greater heights. The 2022-2023 season includes a number of important new elements. We are expanding the Symphonic season from 10 to 11 weekends, and the Pops season from 7 to 8 weekends, allowing the FWSO to present even more inspiring guest artists and conductors. We are partnering with two outstanding ensembles – the Texas Ballet Theater and vocal group Seraphic Fire – and presenting Chamber Music concerts and Meet the Composer lectures at the Kimbell Art Museum. We are also incorporating stirring visual images and projections into our concert series, to add new dimensions to the audience’s concertgoing experience. And we will continue to present distinguished guest conductors and performers, and special one night only performances, including internationally acclaimed cellist Yo-Yo Ma and the Three American Tenors. In closing, I want to thank all of our patrons and donors who have so loyally supported the FWSO through nearly two years of disruption from the pandemic. Don’t miss FWSO Music Director Laureate Miguel Harth-Bedoya’s long-awaited return to the podium for Elgar’s mysterious and unsolved Enigma Variations and Strauss’ rapturous Tod und Verklärung (“Death and Transfiguration”). Also on the program, cellist Sterling Elliot, winner of the 2019 National Sphinx Competition, makes his debut with the orchestra in Saint-Säens’ fiery Cello Concerto No. 1.
At the end lies the beginning, as the season closes with Haydn’s monumental The Creation, a dramatic oratorio for vocal soloists, orchestra and choir that renders the Biblical text in music. The Miami-based ensemble Seraphic Fire, under the direction of Patrick Dupré Quigley, provides vocal firepower while acclaimed visual artist Elaine J. McCarthy lends her talents to bring this ambitious production to life.
Texas Ballet Theater leaps onstage for a joint program with the FWSO of sultry favorites including Stravinsky’s evocative Suite from The Firebird, Griffes’ tantalizing The Pleasure Dome of Kubla Khan and more. Balancing out the program is the world premiere of Of Earth & Sky: Tales from the Motherland, an original work by Alabama native Brian Raphael Nabors.

Mar. 19, 2023 Robert Spano, piano FWSO Musicians MOZART: Quintet in E-flat Major for Piano and Winds, K.452 MESSIAEN: Quartet for the End of Time Talk about impossible odds: Messiaen wrote the first sketches Quatuor pour la fin du temps ("Quartet for the End of Time") as a prisoner in Germany during World War II for himself and fellow musician prisoners, who premiered the work at the camp. Be there when pianist Robert Spano and musicians of the FWSO bring to life the anguished voices of the birds of Messiaen's best-known work as well as Mozart’s exquisite Quintet for piano and winds.
The breeziness of Mozart's "Kegelstatt" trio for clarinet, viola and piano is hardly surprising, as the melodies came to him during a friendly afternoon at a game of skittles. The atmosphere remains vivacious and playful for Poulenc's Sextet for Piano and Wind Quintet before the Kimbell Chamber Series closes with a selection of important chamber works by the 20th century master Lutosławski, often described as Poland's most inspired composer since Chopin.
