Chairman of the Board of Directors Mercedes T. Bass Dear friends, While we have many things to celebrate about the 2020/2021 season, I must first acknowledge the devastation we have all felt as a result of the COVID-19 crisis. So many have lost loved ones, endured financial challenges, and faced unrelenting uncertainty in the face of the pandemic. It is our firm belief that symphonic music heals the soul, and because of this it was even more important for the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra to continue delivering on its mission during these tragic times. While many American symphonies endured a performance hiatus, the FWSO found a new home at the historic Will Rogers Auditorium and presented an in-person season of live Symphonic and Pops concerts. To ensure patron and musician safety, a variety of measures were put into place in consultation with medical professionals, the orchestral union, and venue staff, allowing us to once again bring glorious music to our community. As always, our fabulous musicians dazzled and brought joy and hope to thousands, young and old. In addition to the full season at Will Rogers Auditorium, the orchestra presented two special concerts at Dickies Arena, both conducted by Music Director Laureate Miguel Harth-Bedoya. The annual Gala took place on February 20, 2021 and featured internationally celebrated pianist Yuja Wang alongside your FWSO, followed by a socially distanced black tie dinner that exceeded our fundraising goals. On July 4, the orchestra presented the second annual America Strong concert, featuring operatic superstars Latonia Moore and Morris Robinson, which was also televised on WFAA to an audience across north Texas. Although we were able to offer some limited in-person master class opportunities to young people, the bulk of our education programs pivoted to an online platform. Video recorded concert performances were delivered “on demand” to thousands of students throughout our community, engaging and educating students through the power of music. All of us at the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra are proud of what we accomplished during the 2020/2021 season, but we truly could not have done this without the support of our donor community. During this year of uncertainty we saw unprecedented levels of support, and for this, I express my most sincere appreciation to each of you—musicians, board, staff, patrons, and donors alike. It is truly your generosity that enabled us to continue our operations with no staff or musician cuts, layoffs, or furloughs. For this, I thank you from the bottom of my heart. As we look ahead to what we hope will be more normal times, I am humbled to lead this special organization. I wish you all the very best and look forward to seeing you soon. With warmest regards,

Mercedes T. Bass Chairman of the Board of Directors 2 | FORT WORTH SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA

President and CEO Keith Cerny Dear FWSO Patrons and Supporters, As you review the results of the FWSO’s 2020-2021 season in this annual report, I hope that you will join me in celebrating what the FWSO has accomplished over the first two seasons affected by the COVID-19 virus. Thanks to your unwavering support, the FWSO has been among the most successful American orchestras in “keeping the music playing” during the pandemic. Early in the pandemic, Board Chairman Mercedes T. Bass and I set the joint goals of prioritizing the health and safety of the musicians, crew, and administrative staff, and paying our talented core musicians and dedicated staff with no job cuts, furloughs, or pay reductions. As the public health crisis enters its third year, I am delighted to report that the FWSO has been able to enhance its artistic vibrancy and innovation in 2021 despite the pandemic, and also achieve strong financial results. Artistically, the FWSO is stronger than ever. In February 2021, we named the acclaimed American conductor Robert Spano as the FWSO’s Music Director Designate. We are extraordinarily lucky to have been able to recruit Maestro Spano as our next Music Director; he is known in North America and Europe as an exceptional conductor, generous colleague, and enthusiastic collaborator with musicians and staff. In December 2021, we named Ghanaian-German conductor Kevin John Edusei as the FWSO’s Principal Guest Conductor. I cannot imagine stronger artistic leadership than these two remarkable musicians. At the May 2021 Board meeting, Maestro Spano and I announced an exciting new artistic vision for the FWSO, including growing and developing the orchestra; increasing the creativity, breadth, and vibrancy of FWSO’s musical programs; and expanding the FWSO’s existing passionate commitment to student and adult education. Since his appointment, we have also appointed 10 tenure-track musicians in the orchestra, primarily filling vacancies due to retirements and normal attrition. Financially, the FWSO has managed the two pandemic years extremely well, thanks to the generosity of Board Chairman Mercedes T. Bass, Mr. and Mrs. John Kleinheinz, Ed Schollmaier, and other donors, as well as significant government assistance. For the 2019-2020 fiscal year, the FWSO reported a net deficit of just $12,027 for the year ending July 31, 2020, having used $336,172 of the Board reserve. For the 2020-2021 fiscal year, the FWSO had a net surplus of $13,678 for the year ending July 31, 2021, having paid back $330,000 into the Board reserve. Over these two fiscal years, then, the FWSO has achieved virtually balanced financial results, while paying our gifted musicians and hard-working staff in full. In closing, I want to thank all of our patrons and supporters for their loyal support during this “once in a century” public health crisis. While the COVID-19 pandemic is still with us, unfortunately, we should all feel collective pride in how well the Board, patrons, donors, musicians, stage crew, and staff have come together to respond to this unprecedented challenge. Thank you! Yours sincerely,

Keith Cerny, Ph.D. President and CEO 2020/2021 Annual Review | 3

Education Pro

Throughout the pandemic, the FWSO remained committed to engaging young people through music. A typical year can mean serving upwards of 60,000 children and adults through the Adventures in Music education and community outreach programs. Due to the continuation of the COVID-19 pandemic, several FWSO Education and Community programs were impacted. This said, the FWSO education programs continued online through innovative approaches and with the help of the generous donor community of the FWSO.

“Throughout this global crisis, the FWSO’s Board and leadership have remained passionate about the need to perform safely, while still bringing the gift of live music to the community,” said Mercedes T. Bass, FWSO’s chairman of the board. “We are proud to have received national recognition for our innovative approach to reopening during the pandemic while taking comprehensive measures to protect the health of our patrons, musicians and staff.” –Dionne Anglin, FOX 4, Fort Worth, Sept. 7, 2020 2020/2021 Annual Review | 15

Results of Operations

FINANCIAL SUMMARY Despite a reduction in both seating capacity and the number of concerts performed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the FWSO was still able to generate a small financial surplus while adding $330,000 to the board reserve. Due to the generosity of our patrons coupled with expanded government grants and tax credits, our entire orchestra and staff were able to continue to perform and operate despite the challenges surrounding the pandemic.

The Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra donor community played a vital role in the success of the 2020/2021 Season. Due to audience capacity limitations at Will Rogers, ticket sales accounted for a smaller percentage of overall revenue, and FWSO donors met this charge through their continued generosity, contributing a total of $9.2 million in fiscal year 2021.

On February 20, 2021, the FWSO was thrilled to host the premier donor event of the season, the annual Gala which took place at Dickies Arena. Following a dazzling concert featuring pianist Yuja Wang and Music Director Laureate Miguel Harth-Bedoya alongside the Orchestra, 200 guests enjoyed a seated dinner on the main floor of Dickies Arena.

Throughout the balance of the season, donors to the FWSO continued to enjoy exclusive events including numerous open rehearsals that gave guests a behind-the-scenes look into the creative process, as well as a special celebratory July 4 picnicstyle dinner with fireworks at Dickies Arena that corresponded with the second annual America Strong concert.

The FWSO also received three transformational gifts that helped sustain the longer effects of the COVID-19 pandemic and we are immensely grateful to Mrs. Mercedes T. Bass, Mr. Ed Schollmaier, and Mr. and Mrs. John and Marsha Kleinheinz for their leadership and generosity to Keep the Music Playing.

Following safety measures including COVID-19 testing, socially distanced seating, and more, the event was a true success and a welcome return for many. Fundraising goals were met, raising more than $1 million including concert ticket sales and an auction.

The Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra is grateful to the many foundations, government agencies, corporate sponsors, and individual partners who supported, attended, and advocated on behalf of the FWSO this past year. Thank you! 2020/2021 Annual Review | 19

ORRIS

Brooks Morris was the founder and first conductor of the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra. Thanks to his vision, commitment, and generous spirit, the Orchestra is woven into the cultural fabric of this community. The Brooks Morris Society honors those individuals whose commitment to the future of the FWSO has inspired them to include the Orchestra in their will or estate plans. Planned giving offers a variety of estate-planning opportunities that allow you to make a lasting difference in the sustainability of the FWSO while at the same time creating a musical legacy and enjoying potential income-tax advantages. A planned gift is more than a donation, it is an inspiring statement of dedication and trust in the leadership, talent and artistic vision of the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra. +
