Breaking boundaries
By David Wood
Digital artist Jeroen van der Most used his ISE Keynote ‘Breaking Boundaries with Creative AI’ to explore how a technology better known for delivering productivity and efficiency gains for businesses can be used for more innovative, creative ends.
“AI means that we are now able to create insanely beautiful images; self-evolving artworks and installations that can keep on changing forever,” he said. “This means that the role of the creator is changing to become more of an initiator.” In his speech, the artist explored another key area of his work, detailing his digital art

project ‘Letters from Nature’, which uses text generation AI to write letters to world leaders about the climate crisis. “That project uses AI in a way that it is no longer some human tool, but it can breach a boundary between humans and nature. It’s become a vehicle to raise discussion about sustainability and the way we use technology,” he added.

invidis signals key trends and prospects for digital signage
By David Wood
invidis consulting’s Florian Rotberg and Stefan Schieker kicked off this year’s Digital Signage Summit ISE in traditional fashion with a keynote overview of the latest trends and drivers for the industry. Schieker said the broader economic environment is one of improving sentiment, with CEOs twice as likely to expect the global economy to grow compared with last year. Rotberg added that there was similar optimism at the start of 2023, but it was marred by multiple post-Covid crises, including wars, political tension, rising inflation and climate change. “The initial optimism about strong growth didn’t materialise,” said Rotberg. “There were 8.2 million units of digital signage globally YoY, up 1%, but global value declined by 21% YoY to $13.5 billion.” Schieker said the long-term trends based on the Market Tracker were still “very bumpy”. “2023 oversupply put pressure on prices, with growth in LED displays essentially flat at less than 10%. 2024 growth expectations are 3-8%,” he added. Rotberg identified low-power displays as another key trend. “LED and LCD have shown improvements in low power consumption, not surprising when low-power displays are becoming mandatory across the EU.” The topic of AI was also explored during the summit. In a panel session entitled ‘Engaging Experiences – using Gen AI’, Stephen Jenkins, CRO, Videri, Tamara Bebb, CEO, Spectrio, and Dominic Bradbury, director, Kerve Creative, discussed some of the challenges of effectively harnessing GenAI. “We are going to see it more and more, but it has to change immediately in real time based on the consumer,” said Bebb. Jenkins added: “We can’t deny that GenAI is going to provide us with lots of benefits. The question is how we aggregate data from our customers to make it more useful.”
Some glaring weaknesses remain when it comes to managing the security of large commercial buildings, according to Michael Skurla, chief product officer and co-founder at Radix IoT, who was speaking on a cyber security panel at the Smart Workplace Summit, which continues in room CC5.1 from 15:30 today. “Commercial buildings are built and managed by one entity, but the tenants are usually responsible for what goes on on each floor,” he explained. “So you have 20 to 50 tenants, each with layers of IT and security protocols, and organisations managing the building have to integrate with all this, and while they do the best they can they don’t have a structure to lean on. It’s not a technology problem per se, but the way that construction and the building world operates in a highly siloed and fractured way.” Shaun Reardon, principal cyber security consultant at DNV, sees the same weakness in the multi-vendor supply chain, as security often isn’t considered in a holistic way during projects. “We are commissioned to hack various systems and risk-critical errors always emerge in the interfaces between different systems, such as a shared GPS clock,” he noted. “Integrators should remember that sometimes, the strength of their system will inadvertently exploit the weakness in another system. So individually they’re clear, but if you put it all together it’s a ticking time bomb.”

boundaries and going further from a purely rational intelligence aimed at productivity and efficiency, towards a more ethical intelligence.” “The project began when over the past year I created an AI replica of my artist’s mind using custom algorithms to create
AI-based imagery. I started to mix this with the minds of animals; for instance, I imagined what the life of a bee would be like. In AI I asked it to create art installations with my ideas mixed with all these elements from the life of a bee; from hexagon shapes to people dancing like bees.”

Making AI a companion
By Monica Heck
We are scratching the surface of what generative AI allows us to do, according to Paco Guzman, research scientist manager at Meta AI. Speaking at the European/ Latin American AV Summit, he explained how he sees AI as a companion and not an adversary. “I see how the future of AI can become a symbiotic relationship with humans in which you use it to navigate your world. I feel AI is something that gives humans superhuman abilities such as language learning. It’s a tool to improve productivity, learning and capabilities.” Martin Umaran, co-founder and chairman EMEA at Globant, warned against too much regulation in the market around AI, as he feels each industry comes with its own strict set of rules that influence the outcome. “There comes a point where regulation places too strict boundaries around innovation,” he said. “I don’t believe we have to regulate the engine of the solutions; let them self-regulate within each industry.
(L-R): ICAP Global’s Martin Saul; Paco Guzman, Meta AI; Martin Umaran, Globant
Individuals must also take responsibility for their own privacy.” Guzman agreed, suggesting a focus on an outcome-based approach to AI rather than blanket regulations that can hurt small players who are actively contributing to the sector. “The future of AI isn’t just in the hands of big companies, there are lots of small players taking up innovation challenges,” he added. With the advent of disruptive technologies like AI, it becomes more crucial than ever to find, train and keep the right talent. Martin Saul, chairman of the AVIXA board
of directors and CEO, ICAP Global, posed the question: “This industry is expected to grow by $100 billion in the next five years, how are we going to cover this growth with talent?” The industry will have to source those skills in multiple ways, said Saul, either through the arrival of newcomers from other sectors like IT and communications, or by thinking about how to upskill existing talent and make them more flexible and resilient. “We are living not in an era of continuous improvement, but of continuous change and we need to help people thrive in this context,” he said.
High-quality video for all By David Wood Caretta Research co-founder and research director Tom Morrod has highlighted a quiet revolution as the pro-AV industry and the media industry converge. Speaking at the start of the Content Production & Distribution Summit, Morrod said: “Premium content is no longer the preserve of big media; pro-video tools are now cheap and accessible, so it is critical to package video tools to address different users and uses.” The big picture, he said, is that, “customers, fans, colleagues, employees and audiences are now all accessible via video; video consumption behaviours have fundamentally changed, making video a powerful and democratised engagement tool. “Vendors need to find ways to talk to the new user groups to communicate how they help solve specific problems.” Morrod identified the growth of a new group of non-professional users for online video as one of the key disruptors: “The world has moved online. The total volume of user-generated content from places such as YouTube is now 25x bigger than professional. But there are still 10x more viewing hours and 20x more revenue in traditional media despite production drifting towards new use cases. “Now companies can use FAST channels – which are innovating the business model for TV – across corporate areas such as marketing, outreach and brand building, with technology such as GenAI lowering the bar to complex video production.” In a panel session discussing the trends impacting the content production and distribution sector, Alain Polgar, SVP, EMEA & APAC

sales, Chyron, also identified the significant growth of non-professional users. “Everybody sees the same trends. People want to use the best tools to tell a better story in higher quality.” Abi Hemingway, managing director, Jackshoot, added: “Corporates now want proper lighting and cameras, they want that quality because they have the desire to elevate their content after the webcams of the pandemic era.” Kevin Schwutke SVP, business unit solutions, Arri Group, confirmed: “CEO videos are much higher quality, and the widespread adoption of IP-based production is making life much easier.”

Pérez Ninou: “We can access tools that give us creative independence”

06_ISE24_D3_Exhibitor News_v1JR_JMcKPB.indd 6
Aspiring digital creators can thrive in the emerging imagination economy if they fully understand how the next stage of the internet is disrupting the key pillars of our society, according to Pere Pérez Ninou, founder and CEO of Metacampus. Speaking on the Partner Stage in room CC5.3, Pérez Ninou noted that AI is one of the key drivers of creative freedom, as it enables creativity to flourish. “The democratisation of creativity is what excites us, because everyone gets to play, we are levelling the playing field,” he said, adding that people no longer need to specialise and spend years gaining specific skills.
Sharp/NEC (3E500); and Sony (3E300). A group of highly esteemed designers and marketers will further evaluate each of the finalists, and one winner in each category will be named during a free-toattend awards ceremony starting at 16:00 today on the CEDIA Smart Home Technology Stage in Hall 2.
“We can access tools that give us creative independence,” he continued. “Now creators must focus on navigating the new ecosystem, understanding algorithms, becoming more noticed, growing a community and setting up agile revenue models on blockchain-based applications proliferating as part of micro communities, allowing multiple types of collaboration.” Creativity is what sets people apart in the imagination economy, not the tools. “It’s how you maximise the potential of those emerging tools to create stories for different professional fields, be it entertainment, education or purely for art,” he said. “It requires a change of mindset, we need to foster creativity and innovation as a lifestyle choice, but we live in a constantly evolving and digitally fastpaced society and that requires constantly adapting to new trends. We have to make sure we are always one step ahead.”

Integrators key to solving smart home privacy concerns
(L-R): Rich Green, Rich Green Design; Alex Capecelatro, Josh.ai; James Chen, Kordz; and JB Fowler, Domotz
By David Wood A debate about the increasing use of AI technology in the home at the CEDIA Smart Home Technology Stage quickly moved to
the problems that the rapid development of AI-based home management systems might create. Josh.ai founder and CEO Alex Capecelatro initially focused on the benefits of AI. “The first iteration was very narrow; the addition of voice
control to domestic devices, for example. But with ChatGPT the world changed overnight,” he said. “This was the start of artificial general intelligence, which is able to adapt and morph, which is where it all gets very exciting.” But Rich Green from systems integrator Rich Green Design warned: “The big question is, whose version of AI are you going to let into your home?” JB Fowler, chief product officer at software monitoring specialist Domotz, added: “You need to be worried about this. That’s why I like all the EU laws that help protect people’s data.” Capecelatro argued that part of the solution to the AI privacy problem is working with the right integrators, who know how the different systems work. “When you see a big headline in the news telling you that customers’ data has been exploited, don’t integrate systems from those companies in homes,” he said. “There are enough good products out there run by ethical people, so ask if they have done some baseline tests.” “This is a big opportunity for integrators,” Capecelatro added. “Understanding how these systems work could be your marketing message over the next 10 years.”
Shining a light on creativity By Colby Ramsey Tech Talk attendees at the ISE Show Floor Stage in Hall 4 yesterday learned about ‘Patterns and Recognitions’, the first creative collaboration between ISE and DHUB, Barcelona’s centre for design, architecture and innovation. The exhibition presents the ground-breaking work of United Visual Artists (UVA), and can be seen at DHUB from Friday 2 February as part of the programme of Llum BCN, Barcelona’s popular festival of light arts in the Poblenou district. UVA founder Matt Clark, in conversation with Jose Luis De Vicente Guerrero, artistic director, DHUB Disseny Hub Barcelona, spoke about the company’s background and expertise since it was formed two decades ago. UVA was created off the back of a show it designed for the band Massive Attack: “For that show we used the very first touring LED screen, which was a second-hand screen from a Spice Girls tour in the 1990s,” Clark revealed. “We’ve always been about fusing engineering, software design, art direction and traditional design at the very beginning of the creative process. “The band are really happy to not be lit in a traditional sense, and love to embrace challenging, interesting ideas. The narrative of that show really conveyed the challenges of living through an information age, navigating truth and fake news.” This historic show was not only the catalyst for the beginning of UVA as a practice, but also for new working processes and

technologies that were built as a result. “From an artistic and conceptual point of view, we’ve always been interested in making tangible or material things out of things that are abstract, such as information or light,” added Clark. “Light, information and data are kind of our source materials, and they manifest in all sorts of different ways. “We do a lot of projects using traditional off-the-shelf technology, but interface with them in perhaps unusual ways, using LED screens, electronics, projection. We also create large-scale kinetic works, and we refer to these as being ‘spatial instruments’.”

Diversify the workforce to avoid AI bias
By Michael Burns
Several major organisations have had very public scandals around inherent bias in AI tools, but a key suggestion from the ‘Fireside Chat: Is AI biased?’ panel on the AVIXA Xchange LIVE stage yesterday was that AI development companies need to change the makeup of their workforce. “If you look at people who are building these tools, it’s not that they’re necessarily evil, but they reflect the world as they see it,” said Gill Ferrell, programme director, 1EdTech and EUNIS. “I work at the interface between IT and AV and the industry is heavily white male dominated. Even if we can’t change the base of the industry overnight, then we at least need to make sure we talk to a diverse range of users about what their needs are.” The host, Jessica Sanders, senior distribution development manager, Absen, agreed: “AV integrators and our people in the field are listening to customer feedback. It’s our responsibility to reach out to the manufacturers and let them know this is a problem with their system, and it needs to be corrected.” Chris Hope, founder and executive director, The Looplab, said: “We need to demand of the pro-AV community, of our industry, that the integration of AI and AV no longer looks like the mirror of our reality, of the biases that we all inherently have, but rather it is offered as a window to the limitless possibilities that we can enter into, the kinds of

empowerment, the kinds of alternative realities that we can see with AI. “You need to think about how implicit bias can seep into the entire lifecycle of the employee; everything from who gets hired, who ends up working in the front office versus who actually gets to develop the software itself, to upper management.” “We need to remember that we set the tone from the top of our organisations,” agreed Stacia Pfeiffer, project manager, Pixomondo. “As leaders in our fields we need to recognise and work on our own inherent biases, and we need to promote a culture of ethics in our companies. Very often, especially in tech companies, ethics are not discussed.” “It’s just an arms race,” said Ferrell. “Suppliers are trying to be the first to get an AI to market and they’re worried about being left behind. I don’t think many of these questions are even coming into play.”

Visitors can sit in the cockpit where the pilot, multiple sailing race winner Glenn Ashby of New Zealand’s America’s Cup team, broke the wind-powered land speed record in December 2022. The 14m craft, which uses a rigid wing rather than a sail, reached a speed of 222.4km/h on the dry basin of Lake Gairdner in South Australia. Ashby was integrally involved in the design and the engineering of Horonuku. “The cockpit has been designed to suit me,” he said. “It’s a combination of flying, sailing, driving, motorcycling, all mixed in together. You have to use all your skills to make sure you’re fast and safe.” “Horonuku is at ISE as a representation of Emirates Team New Zealand and also the America’s Cup coming here to Barcelona, with the racing schedule between August and October this year,” he added. “It represents the technology and the innovation that goes into the America’s Cup yachts that we’ll see in Barcelona in a few months’ time.” —michael burns

A cool high five for Ten Squared
Celestion | Stand: 7L700
Celebrating its 100th anniversary at ISE 2024, Celestion has unveiled the Ten Squared Series of pro-audio drivers. Comprising five loudspeaker driver models, the series is engineered for applications in subwoofers or as bass units in two- or three-way loudspeakers and larger format line arrays. The line includes the flagship 24in TSQ2460, 21in TSQ2145, 18in TSQ1845, 15in TSQ1535 and 12in TSQ1230. Providing constant airflow through Precision Tuned Venting (PTV), the drivers deliver efficient cooling around the magnet assembly and voice coils. Cooling is further optimised through custom coil winding, and Celestion says the 24in TSQ2460 provides a cooling benefit of as much as -30°C compared to conventional designs, as well as enabling the driver to deliver a continuous power rating of 4800W. John Paice, marcom manager for Celestion, said: “You can’t revolutionise the way a loudspeaker operates, but you can incrementally improve every aspect of how it functions. The goal is always that it should perform in the same way even after hundreds of hours of performance. We’ve managed that with this range of drivers, and a lot of it is down to this enhanced cooling and heat resistance.” —kevin emmott www.celestion.com

Driving image fidelity
Barco Residential is showcasing how it is the first projector manufacturer to be certified by the Professional Video Alliance (PVA), meaning that it can prove its products meet claimed data specifications and that its hardware can be accurately calibrated to a given standard. According to Andy Jones, technical sales engineer for Barco Residential, “our core market is still very much dedicated theatre. As a result, we want to ensure that we… and our partners that sell our product ultimately to the end user, faithfully reproduce the director’s intent”. Jones noted that the experience of watching a film “should be repeatable, but it can only be repeatable if you follow certain standards. It can’t be the Wild West out there, otherwise everyone’s image is going to look different”. Gregg Loewen, founder of the PVA, said the alliance was formed more than six years ago as a video standards quality organisation. Its aim is to get member companies together to talk about, drive awareness of, and increase image fidelity. Today, the alliance has over 300 members globally. Its main areas of activity are to train individuals in “how to calibrate displays and make them better”, consult with manufacturers and certify products if they

Pushing a green agenda
As Presenting Show Partner for the fifth consecutive year, KNX is again taking part at ISE with a large, open-concept stand that is designed to be an immersive hub for all things KNX. According to Casto Cañavate, marketing manager at KNX Association, in addition to the products being showcased by 18 member companies, the most important message the association wants to send this year is the need to be more sustainable. Cañavate: KNX needs to make sure it “This is the first public event is having an impact on sustainability where we are pushing this message,” he commented. Indeed, not only are smart energy products that are designed to drastically curtail energy use and minimise environmental impact on show, the KNX stand itself is also as sustainable as possible and will be recycled for a number of events. In Cañavate’s view, KNX is well placed to lead the charge, with others following suit. Signs of change are already evident in the AV industry, he added. “Sustainability is the concept of completing a project that has been conceived thoroughly to save energy. And that’s what we need to make sure that people understand,” he said. While it will be important to maintain the message that KNX represents reliable technology, Cañavate said, “at the same time, we need to make sure that we are making an impact on sustainability”. —anne morris www.knx.org

Building on its X Series range of coaxial speakers, the Xi Series is specifically tailored for short-throw applications. It delivers a constant tonal balance with smooth coverage for off-axis audiences, eliminates the need for a minimum listening distance and provides high feedback rejection. Making their global debut at ISE, the X6i and X8i both boast a 1.5in neodymium compression driver coaxially loaded by a 6in or 8in low-frequency transducer in a bass reflex cabinet. Their 90° axisymmetric directivity imparts a smooth tonal response which is free of secondary lobes over the entire frequency range. With both speakers sporting compact, slender designs, L-Acoustics hopes to encourage integration into high-end architectural settings. Peter Owen, sales manager for L-Acoustics, said: “We’ve grown much more into the installation side of the business over the past few years, and this range has given us a dedicated installation package. Targeted anywhere there is a requirement for high-quality audio, these speakers look very sleek and very pretty; I think we’ll overcome the battle of speakers being seen in these places, because it’s always a big issue.” —kevin emmott www.l-acoustics.com

Today’s Events Crespo will be talking about her latest work ‘Structures of Being’
Sofia Crespo to discuss her ground-breaking work during ISE Keynote
Following the success of her specially created artwork, which was projection mapped onto the facade of the iconic Gaudí-designed Casa Batlló last weekend, digital artist Sofia Crespo will be talking about her work during an ISE Keynote this afternoon. Born in Argentina, Crespo is co-founder of Entangled Others Studio. She is best known for her work with neural networks and machine learning, along with her huge interest in biology-inspired technologies. Her work, including Neural Zoo and Artificial Remnants, explores the potential of AI in artistic practice and its ability to reshape our understandings of creativity.
Her latest work, titled ‘Structures of Being’, presents nature as an evolutionary process of infinite creativity, while creating a parallel with Gaudí’s practice. It immerses viewers in the materials, beings and natural phenomena present in Casa Batlló and invites them to feel the profound beauty of existence. Set to music created by generative composer Robert M Thomas, it also features local performers, including organist Juan de la Rubia and the Cosmos string quartet. Crespo’s creations have been shown across the world, including a month-long takeover of Times Square last May during which digital works were displayed across 96 billboards. She has also been part of the Meta AI Artist in Residence programme, in collaboration with Meta Open Arts, during which she created Critically Extant, a project exploring the limits of available data as a means of engaging with critically endangered species. Sofia Crespo’s Keynote takes place today from 13:15-14:00 on the ISE Show Floor Stage in Hall 4.

AVIXA introduces the Audiovisual Network Professional Certification AVIXA has launched the new Audiovisual Network Professional Certification to serve as a tool to help AV and IT professionals prove their AV networking skills as these two fields converge. AV professionals will be able to demonstrate that while they’ve long known the AV side, they can also properly get their equipment on the network. The reverse will be true for IT professionals: they have ample experience with networking, and this credential allows them to demonstrate that they are also able to properly integrate AV into that network. “This certification is basically a broad-level view of how to build a network that can accommodate an audiovisual design,” said Rebecca Sullins, CTS-D, CTS-I, senior design engineer, AMP Think. “Audiovisual systems are progressing to be more and more IT and network based, and networks are becoming more robust so they can now accommodate the higher bandwidth and the low latencies that we require. It’s a merging of those two fields.” “Earning the ANP certification can provide several benefits to AV professionals. It validates your experience in AV network systems. It makes you a more desirable

Today’s Featured Speaker
An advocate for sustainability
By Anne Morris
Christina De Bono, founder and president, SAVe
Sustainability in AV (SAVe), a non-profit organisation committed to ensuring a sustainable future, is present at ISE for the second time after becoming the event’s official sustainability partner in 2023. As was the case last year, it is seeking more industry leaders to help encourage stakeholders in the audiovisual field to take concerted action to achieve the United Nations’ 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). According to Christina De Bono, founder and president of SAVe, the organisation’s ambassador programme has already proved hugely successful, with several leaders from different parts of the world becoming SAVe ambassadors in order to “bring the same mission and initiatives to their regions”. “At ISE this year, we are hosting a SAVe ambassador leadership workshop to bring on more ambassadors who can take on a leadership role,” she says. SAVe is also involved in a number of other activities throughout the event, including an exhibition area in Congress Square, while De Bono is taking part in a panel debate around climate change and sustainability at today’s Smart Workplace Summit. SAVe was also the sustainability partner for the inaugural European/Latin American AV Summit held on 30 and 31 January.
‘I can’t even describe the level of enthusiasm and urgency that people have taken in getting involved with SAVe’ “They identified three hot topics that they wanted to address, and one of them was sustainability. So we hosted an interactive panel discussion called ‘Bringing the Sustainable Development Goals to the AV Industry’, involving our SAVe ambassadors from Latin America,” De Bono explains. She adds that the focus is to continue to help the AV industry do its part in achieving the SDGs. “The climate crisis, the increasing environmental degradation, the increasing inequality and poverty are diverse problems, and they’re getting worse. People want to do something in our industry,” she continues.
Second life
A key problem is tackling e-waste. “In 2019 alone, over 50 million metric tonnes of e-waste were generated by North America and Europe, and the majority of that ends up in landfill and dumps. Less than 20% of that is officially recycled. In the United States it’s less than 10%,” she says. One of the programmes launched by SAVe to help tackle this growing problem is SAVe: A Second Life. The

aim is to give AV equipment a second life by donating it through a network that SAVe has established with the Commission on Voluntary Service & Action (CVSA) and the Higher Education Technology Managers Alliance (HETMA) representing 600 universities in North America. According to De Bono, this programme has already gained considerable traction. “Over the past year, we’ve actually published very comprehensive, official guidelines that companies can adopt on reuse, repurpose, recycling and proper disposal of AV equipment. We’re the first organisation in our industry to provide official guidelines,” she says, adding that SAVe has also come up with a vetting process to ascertain which recycling companies are certified. “I can’t even describe the level of enthusiasm and urgency that people have taken in getting involved with SAVe and bringing our initiatives to their constituencies and local markets,” she comments. Other initiatives include a certification programme. The aim here is to provide education, a workshop and planning session to help companies come up with an actionable plan on ways that their organisation can align with the sustainable development goals. And there’s more to come throughout 2024, with the launch of a platform that can help to measure the amount of AV equipment that doesn’t end up in a landfill or dump. “There are many ways that we can turn the ship around. But we have to take action now, because at the rate we’re going, in 2030, when we’re supposed to be achieving the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals, we will be producing upwards of 70 million metric tonnes of e-waste. It’s grown 21% in the past five years,” she says. De Bono is also president and founder of ClearTech, a commercial AV systems integration company headquartered in Altadena, California. As might be expected, the company has become a major proponent of SAVe’s goals and was one of the pilots for the organisation’s recycling guidelines. “We have a whole process in place that has been adopted company-wide,” she adds.

collaboration tools. AV and VR devices and their impact on student engagement is another hot topic this year, as well as haptic devices in the learning space, big data and AI. A visit to the Zoom, HP Poly, Jabra and Microsoft stands should be on the cards for those interested in collaboration and communication. On the audio front, players such as QSC and Shure offer options for projects of all sizes. Clevertouch, ViewSonic and Avocor are just some of the brands to see if seeking display solutions. To delve deeper into the important trends impacting the sector, the Education Technology Summit, taking place from

While the use of AV technology supported student engagement and retention during the pandemic, the real focus this year is on the quality of the hybrid learning experience, which hasn’t always been up to scratch. To address this issue and to find technology for learning spaces that is productive, inclusive and equitable, visitors should head to the Unified Communications & Education Technology Zone in Hall 2. Here, exhibitors are showcasing a range of solutions such as videoconferencing and streaming systems, online broadcast equipment, high-end cameras and microphones, interactive and connected screens, whiteboards and projectors, virtual classrooms, online assessment options and

The summit will address the use of extended reality in the education of healthcare workers, the applications and ethical considerations of AI-enhanced tools, and the challenges of developing a healthy ecosystem of innovators, researchers and adopters.

Demo debut for auto-calibration module
A multi-projector auto-calibration module, developed by Modulo Pi, is being demonstrated for the first time at a trade show. The module is being shown at ISE as part of a mini-dome set-up powered by a total of three projectors. The solution – which relies on Power over Ethernet cameras to offer fast and simplified cabling – makes it possible to automatically handle multi-projector soft-edge blending and geometry on planar, curved and dome surfaces. Available as an option for the Modulo Player and Modulo Kinetic media servers, the dongle-based auto-calibration module is said to facilitate high-precision edge-blending and warping within minutes and with zero latency. —david davies www.modulo-pi.com

The VZ-2.UHD visualiser is a cost-effective, entry-level document camera that “blends simplicity and sophistication” in enhancing teaching and learning. The compact design is suitable for both physical classrooms and hybrid learning environments, according to WolfVision. The 4K/UHD camera captures images up to A4 portrait and A3 landscape size, presenting content on screen with great clarity. It has a 24x zoom to enable it to show a wide range of educational materials, from intricate diagrams to expansive layouts, with detail and precision. The visualiser comes with highintensity LED lighting, for natural and consistent illumination, while continuous autofocus and a touchscreen interface allow educators to focus on teaching rather than on operating the technology. When using web conferencing services, the rotating camera enables teachers to switch easily between displaying content and engaging with students by using the visualiser as a webcam. The device’s network interface facilitates easy remote setup, monitoring and management via WolfVision’s For (well) illuminated vSolution Link Pro software. manuscripts: WolfVision’s —david fox VZ-2.UHD visualiser www.wolfvision.com

Artnovion | Stand: 2F700
New star of the Cinema Series
Cosmos CS is being showcased as the latest addition to the Artnovion Cinema Series. The company describes it as a modular LED starlight panel, made from high-quality acoustic material, “combining aesthetics with performance”. It comes equipped with fully customisable LED starlight lighting and an acoustic core for home cinemas. Each panel has a clip-in modular front with daisy-chain LED connections. Cosmos CS also has a dedicated app that allows users to control the lighting. This offers a wide range of customisation options, including colour, brightness and animations. According to Artnovion, Cosmos CS is a “powerful acoustic panel that offers a number of advantages over traditional fibre optic panels. It is easier to install, offers more lighting options and has excellent acoustic performance.” —ANNE MORRIS www.artnovion.com

Crystal-clear AoIP capabilities
Making its first appearance at ISE, the crystal broadcast mixing console from Lawo is designed to suit a variety of spaces, from small to mid-sized on-air or regional studios. Available with 6, 8 or 14 faders, the compact console is built on the open Ravenna/AES67 audio-over-IP networking standards and complies with SMPTE ST2110-30/-31 for audio, and ST2022-7 for redundancy.
The Uniline Max is Arbane Groupe brand APG’s new mid-throw line array for indoor and outdoor spaces of around 6,000 people. The three-way, biamped line array is composed of two 10in low-frequency drivers, 6in for the mid and a 1in compression driver for the high. A wave guide allows for a horizontal coverage of 100° and a vertical coverage of 10°. Thanks to dedicated presets, the system is designed to work with both the APG DA8 and DA12. The angle of the system can be adjusted in compression or tension mode, allowing it to be set up with a reduced team. It is also possible to stack the line array at the top of subwoofers for smaller configurations. In addition to the main box, the Uniline Max range also includes a 21in subwoofer designed to be mounted at the top or at the side of the main array. —KEVIN EMMOTT www. arbaneThe Uniline Max groupe.com mid-throw line array
In combination with the Lawo Power Core, Lawo’s softwaredefined, high-density DSP mixing engine and modular I/O device, crystal supports expandable I/O; accommodating AES67, MADI, analogue, AES3 and Dante audio sources and destinations. The console’s high-density control surface, available in a light and a dark version, is designed to maximise functionality. Meanwhile, adding optional virtual extensions increases the availability of dynamic information for every function, yielding a level of customisation that allows for even more flexible integration into any application scenario. —DAVID DAVIES www.lawo.com The crystal broadcast console is available with 6, 8 or 14 faders

Customisation in the cloud
Stardraw Cloud is a new online platform that allows businesses to create customised software applications for designing, visualising and documenting custom products and projects without having to write code. These custom applications can be accessed by users around the world via any browser on any operating system, including mobile devices. Rather than being custom-coded, the applications can be configured to deliver functionality and data with specific branding and capabilities, and everything is configurable. This is achieved using a flexible administrative interface to manipulate data fields called Settings, rather than requiring the services of software engineers or web developers. A custom application can contain an unlimited number of products, with unlimited Settings, such as retail price, dealer price and dimensions. It can also be utilised by an unlimited number of users, generating unlimited projects and exploiting unlimited reports. —david davies www.stardraw.com

The evolution of LED technology
By Ted Romanowitz, principal analyst, Futuresource Consulting The evolution of LED technology is occurring before our very eyes. There is much miscommunication as to what products are microLED and miniLED versus IMD and standard SMD LED. Many marketing claims being made to leverage the trending technology buzz are creating confusion in the marketplace. It is now widely accepted that true microLED will be implemented as sub-100 micron chiplets mass transferred onto a TFT or glass backplane with active driver technology. Conversely, miniLED will be the flip chip variety of chip on board and will be realised as 100 to 200 micron chiplets mass transferred directly onto printed circuit boards combined with common cathode driver ICs. Both package-less implementations leverage mass transfer versus pick-and-place and are expected to deliver significant cost savings. SMD (surface mount device) has dominated the LED marketplace for decades.

However, SMD LED is relegated to 1.2mm and above due to fragility and the frequency of damage that can occur at tighter pixel pitches. More resilient integrated matrix devices (IMD) have largely overcome image quality issues and are now widely available in mass production and implemented by many LED brands. As IMD volumes further ramp up in 2024, selling prices are expected to decrease. Several manufacturers have already obtained mass production of miniLED and are ramping up volumes. Others will follow this year as yields improve, decreasing manufacturing costs and driving another decline in prices. The combination of TFT backplanes, active driver ICs and mass-scale transferring of chiplets will allow true microLED to be manufactured at lower prices than even miniLED. Futuresource predicts dramatic ASP
erosion to enable microLED to overcome LCD panel global revenues early next decade. In pro-AV markets and applications, an industry transition will evolve in 1.5mm and lower pitches from SMD and IMD to microLED, with MiniLED being primarily a transitional techmology. During the next decade, it is anticipated that all three technologies will coexist in the ultra-narrow and narrow pixel pitch market segments.

Micro LED in Package is one of three key technology areas for Sinyopto
Sinyopto | Stand: 6E530
Trio of new technologies for LED device packaging
Three innovative application technologies, Micro LED in Package (MiP), Robust Flat No-leads Package (RFN) and Black Underfill, are on show from Sinyopto. Founded in April 2021, China-based Sinyopto’s focus is on researching, developing, manufacturing and selling LED display device packaging. MiP technology integrates the microLED chip substrate by rewiring and fanning out the pins, enabling easier point-testing of the original difficult electrode. The package incorporates RGB microLED chips for full-colour display. Drawing on advanced IC packaging technology, RFN eliminates the traditional pin-bending design of LED devices and hides the pins at the bottom for a slimmer body that maximises pin area as well as improving flatness and providing strong anti-crash capability. Instead of thermoplastic PPA, the RFN device material uses BT FR4, which is said to offer elevated glass transition temperature, smaller expansion coefficients, higher reliability and greater stability. —david fox en.sinyopto.com

Audio for live events immerses audiences in innovation
By David Davies
GETTY IMAGE
With immersive audio environments becoming more commonplace at festivals and in concert halls worldwide, it’s arguably the most exciting time in live event sound since international touring became a full-scale industry in the early 1970s. So it’s no surprise that ISE 2024 is offering the most far-reaching coverage of audio in the event’s two-decade history. First port of call for sound enthusiasts should be the Audio Zone in Hall 7, where leading brands including L-Acoustics, DiGiCo, Powersoft and Martin Audio will be showing their full array (no pun intended) of innovations, including the latest in spatial audio platforms, beam-steering speakers, power amplifiers, consoles and more. Following their acclaimed introduction last
year, the Audio Demo Rooms – comprising a suite of optimal listening environments tailored to the needs of participating manufacturers – will return to Hall 8. Once again, immersive audio solutions destined for live and installed applications will feature prominently. Exhibitors include RCF, Holoplot, EAW and Coda Audio. Live audio brands will also be represented in the Outdoor Demo Area located between Halls 3 and 4, while for those keen to look back as well as forward, the newly devised
Audio Museum will surely be a must-visit. Located on the walkway to Hall 8 and part of ISE’s 20th anniversary celebrations, the museum will host historic exhibits including PA systems originally used by artists including David Bowie, Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin. Finally, today’s Live Events Summit will hear from the manufacturers of some of the technologies helping to create the most impressive recent tours and residencies. The summit runs from 10:30-14:30 in room CC5.2.

New look of the Iris
Expanding its range of Iris 1.9GHz wireless audio products, Streamit is using ISE to introduce the fullfeatured Iris Pro with sample rate conversion and balanced in/out. Recognised for reliability in wireless audio distribution, Iris offers a notable transmission range of up to 300m in line of sight, and 50m indoors. Because it uses the 1.9GHz band, there is no interference with Bluetooth or WiFi, thereby tackling congestion issues that Streamit says plagues many systems once the area gets more crowded. Fully interoperable, the full-featured Iris Pro offers digital audio inputs that can handle up to 216kHz and sample rate converters, in combination with either Pro receivers with digital out (AES3, SPdiff, TOSlink) and analogue out on XLR or RCA, or with a Standard Iris that can be tucked away. —kevin emmott www.streamit.eu

“Can everyone please mute.” Familiar words to many Zoom meeting participants, and it’s not lost on the company, which says that hosting a virtual event, large-scale presentation or company-wide meeting requires more control and polish than your standard Zoom call. Enter Zoom Webinars, which the company is showcasing this week and is designed to offer more control for hosts and better engagement for participants. Webinars are typically structured presentations with designated speakers leading the discussion, and the company believes the format helps minimise the risk of distractions and tangential conversations, allowing participants to stay focused on the key points being presented. The solution comes with features such as screen sharing, slideshows and multimedia elements, and all webinars can be recorded with automatic transcriptions, smart chapters and password protection. —james mckeown www.zoom.com

Dell Technologies is using ISE 2024 to showcase its work with an NGO to reduce the impact of waste on Mount Everest. The world’s tallest mountain faces a serious problem of waste accumulation that pollutes the environment and threatens wildlife. The Sagarmatha Next Centre in Nepal, a non-profit nongovernmental organisation run by local environmental enthusiasts, educates visitors about this growing environmental issue and seeks to reduce the impact of waste. The centre uses technology from Dell, such as interactive touch monitors, a VR experience and video projectors, to showcase the negative impacts of waste on the mountain and the positive actions of recycling. The centre also runs a Carry Me Back initiative that provides visitors with the opportunity to remove waste and deposit it in collection bins so that it can be transported to Kathmandu for recycling. The initiative has removed more than 5,000kg of waste from Mount Everest – with much of it recycled – since it began in April 2022. —james mckeown www.dell.com

Hybrid working offers solutions to suit the next generation
By David Davies
GETTY IMAGE
It has been the most extraordinarily eventful half-decade for the world of work. The shift towards flexible – or, if you prefer, asynchronous – working patterns began during the 2010s, but it was greatly accelerated by the circumstances of the pandemic. Remote working became the norm, and while opinions differ on the impact of employees spending most of their time out of the office, heightened awareness of work-life balance means that hybrid working is here to stay. For many vendors, this has translated to a focus on developing solutions that support quality working experiences wherever the employee is situated. In particular, boosting video and audio quality for conferencing and
communications is an enduring priority. It’s no surprise, therefore, that this is in focus here at ISE with many of the leading names delivering cutting-edge solutions for hybrid working to be found in two halls. This includes Barco, Cisco, Logitech and Zoom in the Unified Communications & Education
Technology Zone in Hall 2; and Crestron, Sony and Shure in the Multi-Technology Zone in Hall 3. Visitors should also consider making a beeline for the Smart Workplace Summit, which continues this afternoon. This year’s theme is ‘Tackling New Challenges’.

The Acnet audio/data adapter from Paso converts a Paso-Link connection into an IP digital signal. The Paso voice evacuation systems connect equipment Acnet is a complement to the PAW5500of the same type together to VES and PAW51K-VES series of devices build a wider and fully monitored EN54-certified system using a standard Ethernet cable. Paso-Link enables equipment to exchange information through serial communication (RS-485) and analogue audio signals, up to a maximum distance of around 1,200m as defined by the TIA/EIA-485-A standard. The Acnet interface overcomes this barrier to distance, allowing the link to be transferred over IP with a transparent connection to users, installers and all the devices that make up the system. Simple to install inside PAW models, the double Link connection allows the setting up of a point-to-point connection on a LAN network, as well as allowing the reproduction of announcements, pre-recorded messages or music files. The entire system is monitored and automatically detects any failures in real time. Users can also monitor system status through a web interface. —KEVIN EMMOTT www.paso.it

Best of both worlds
Combining digital audio with an analogue FM radio link, the HR-32D from Relacart Electronics is a dual-channel microphone system which integrates a spectrum analyser with wireless audio transmission. An automatic frequency selection function automatically searches and locks onto interference-free frequencies in each working environment. The unit also features a PLL phase-locked oscillator circuit, which when combined with its noise detection mute control can block noisy radio frequency interference. Radio frequency details of the current environment can be monitored in real time on the display screen of the receiver, and the interference-free frequency can be viewed and selected through the screen. The supplied RWW Wireless System Management Software can be connected to a PC network to monitor and search for radio wave interference points in any given location, including frequency dead spots. The HR series provides two digital audio outputs for Dante and AES67. —KEVIN EMMOTT www.relacart.com

Can I be of any assistance? The ListenWiFi receiver and audio-over-WiFi system
Listen Technologies/Ampetronic Labs | Stand: 3Q220
Future of assistive listening starts nows
The first complete installed assistive listening system using Auracast broadcast audio technology has been introduced by Listen Technologies and Ampetronic. Auracast is a new standard for Bluetooth Low Energy audio. It can broadcast audio to unlimited receivers and hearing aids simultaneously without needing to pair to a transmitter first. The companies claim it “will transform the way hearing assistance is delivered in public spaces”. As Auracast receivers are built into future hearing aids,
smartphones, earbuds and headphones, these devices will be able to receive an Auracast broadcast stream, providing much broader inclusion than existing technologies. The system from Listen Technologies and Ampetronic will be the first to let venues and users adopt Auracast. It includes networked installation transmitters for multichannel broadcast for any size of space, with the option for open or secure transmission. It also offers dedicated receivers and charging bases, and a complete line of accessories, including headphones, neck loops, and network management and configuration software. Lavoce Italiana | Stand: 7G820
Magnetic release increases CSF range
The CSF153.00K is a new 15in ferrite common HF/LF magnet coaxial from Lavoce Italiana which rounds out the Italian transducer supplier’s CSF range to five models. The CSF153.00K has a 700W program power handling and 98dB sensitivity for the low frequency, and 120W program power handling and 108dB sensitivity for the high frequency. The LF woofer uses a 3in edgewound copper voice coil on a glass fibre former, and the Polyimide diaphragm and surround employed for the HF uses a 1.75in edgewound copper-clad aluminium voice coil on a Kapton former. This combination offers a wide frequency range of 50-20,000Hz with low harmonic and intermodulation distortion due to the addition of double demodulating rings. The unit is the biggest in the series and complements its existing 6.5in, 8in, 10in and 12in designs. Every design in the series ses component parts from Lavoce’s range of compression drivers and features a single ferrite magnet, low distortion ‘dual gap’ motor. —KEVIN EMMOTT www.lavocespeakers.com

Equipson Group | Stand: 7A500
Synthea amps up feature set
Upgrades to Equipson’s Work Pro family of Synthea amplifiers are providing greater flexibility across the range. Alongside existing DSP functionality, users can now combine input sources in two or four separate mixes and configure any output to high or low impedance. Other new features include Talk Over (ducking) with priority routing, and the inclusion of an input high pass filter and output routing (SPDIF). Equipson has also updated Synthea’s generator to include pink noise and sine wave. It has also incorporated a band pass filter and five-band parametric EQ on each analogue input. Operating in low and high impedance, there are four models in the Synthea range. All have an in-built web server that can be accessed AVPro sales director Paul Slater with the host and device units of the USB 3.2 Gen One 5Gbps extender
AVPro Edge | Stand: 5D800
Extending the power of AV control
AVPro is showcasing its new USB 3.2 Gen One 5Gbps extender with range up to 70m. The device is designed to let users power up to four USB 3.0 devices and send them back to the host device for USB 3.0 cameras, microphones or any other HID control. The USB 3.0 extension has the ability to pull host, so if the PC is not plugged in on the host side, the USB devices will turn off. Users will therefore no longer have the problem of the BYOD system staying in share mode. If this occurs, it will disconnect and go back to its normal host. The company is also launching the MV41 four-input, one-output 4K60 multiviewer, with control drivers for a brand new 4K60 multiview experience. —COLBY RAMSEY wwww.avproedge.com

Adder Technology | Stand: 5E350
Enhancing the user experience
Products showcased on the Adder stand include the ADDERLink Infinity 4001 KVM matrix solution which offers 5K and high frame rate, pixel-perfect and colour accurate video and multigigabit Ethernet support, as well as the ADDERLink ipeps mini, a ZeroU KVM dongle to provide IP remote access over LAN or WAN to a single computer, or wider IT network. Adder has also partnered with control room furniture manufacturer LundHalsey to pair a cutting-edge control room console with the ADDERViewCCS multiviewer to create a realworld control room experience. When used as part of an ADDERLink Infinity IP KVM matrix, the ADDERView CCS multiviewer can access multiple sources and seamlessly switch between them wherever they are located, providing complete situational awareness. Rafael Serrano, head of product management, Adder, said: “We are showing a demo with very high frame rate video where the operator is given the options to switch between physical and virtual computers. We are also generating a workplace for our customers where they can merge different content with a single keyboard or mouse. Each time they move the mouse from monitor one to monitor two, for example, the keyboard and mouse switches automatically to the second computer. It reduces the mental load for the operator and can reduce human error.” —MICHAEL BURNS www.adder.com
