Jatan Shah’s Pro AV Career Comes Full Circle at InfoComm 2025

Jatan Shah’s journey in the world of Pro AV began in 2010 when he joined QSC and 10 days later he was experiencing his first InfoComm. Now, the president of QSC is celebrating his 15th InfoComm as the new AVIXA Chair of the Board of Directors.

Shah joined the AVIXA Board in 2021—a decision that was bigger than taking on his current role as Chair. “I remember coming here in 2021,” Shah said. “[Because of the pandemic] it was a very small show with a lot of people thinking about what the future of trade shows was. Joining the Board was a very humbling moment that year. It’s one thing when everything’s going great and everybody’s happy and partying, versus joining at a time when everybody’s concerned, and you are still in the phase where there’s so much uncertainty.”

After becoming an officer, he knew it was a long-term commitment and was excited to take on his current role. “This was a great way of just giving back to the AV community with a high-

influencing role,” Shah said.

The Chair of the Board of Directors serves a one-year term. Shah sees the agenda of the Board as a multi-year journey, which involves being the hub for the AV industry and also a catalyst for growth. “As Chair, you are facilitating a group of people who are the Board members as well and bringing the best out of them because you have a very diverse set of people who come from various parts of the AV industry and world,” Shah said. “Making sure that we are able to support AVIXA achieve its long-term goals is where our focus is.”

It is an exciting time in Pro AV, especially for Shah, who is seeing what used to be very siloed pillars merging within the industry. His own company, QSC, was recently acquired by Acuity Brands, a building management system and lighting company, so he has witnessed that

blending of industries firsthand. “You think about the parallel industries that exist, and a lot of the solutions are becoming more and more integrated,” Shah said. “So, from the end-user standpoint, yes, you’re making decisions about your AV, but then you’re also making decisions about controls— building controls. All those types of broader trends are then driving the technology integration, which then impacts the AV industry as well.”

That convergence continues to be a hot topic, but that’s not the only trend we’ll see on the show floor this week. “We will continue to see the more practical use of AI,” Shah said. “You’ll see a lot more focus on data.”

As the Pro AV train continues to progress, Shah will look back to that 2021 show to remember a turning point in the industry. “It’s one of those defining moments where you look at an organization and how its resilience was tested in a big way,” he said.

“For me, it was probably the most memorable show just because it was the moment through which the organization arrived back to an all-time high.”

AVIXA Remains Positive on Industry Forecast

If you’re looking for a weather-related metaphor, the forecast for the Pro AV industry is partly sunny…with a chance of tariffs.

On Tuesday, AVIXA presented its annual Market Insights Lunch, a 90-minute primer on the current state of macroeconomic trends impacting the Pro AV industry. This year’s program, “The State of the Pro AV Industry: Convergence Realized!” was presented by Sean Wargo, VP of market insight, and Mike Sullivan-Trainor, senior industry analyst.

The luncheon ran the economic gauntlet while exploring highlights from the organization’s Industry Outlook and Trends Analysis (IOTA) report, which provides data that builds the story of where the industry is heading over the next five years. Basically, AVIXA offered a conservative forecast that predicts a lower overall growth rate, a result of uncertainty from high interest rates, geopolitics, and poor economic performance. “Tariffs are a factor, there’s no doubt,” Wargo said.

While the pace is slower, the outlook for 2030 is still a $402 billion Pro AV market that is expected to grow annually at about 3.9%, which means it will continue to exceed GDP growth. Developing markets, such as the Middle East and Africa and Asia-Pacific, will lead industry growth, while mature markets, including North America and Europe, will lag.

Wargo expects to see security and surveillance exhibit the highest growth rate, while live events will continue its comeback. Transformational technologies are increasingly being woven into the fabric of the industry, including AVoIP, AI, extended reality, and software and cloud migration.

What’s driving the outlook? Wargo said growth engines are shifting. For example, experiences are driving buyers, with plans to improve AV production rooms for broadcast high on the list of upgrades in corporate, retail, and venue market segments.

The labor market remains tight in the Pro AV industry as well, conditions that have remained elevated since 2022. Staffing and skilled labor remain top concerns, followed by product equipment costs and the macroeconomic environment.

Despite headwinds like tariffs and labor costs, Sullivan-Trainor said Pro AV remains optimistic about future opportunities. He said more than 80% of channel partners expect growth each year, and 2025 is no exception. There may be economic challenges, but there are still projects to be done.

Sean Wargo addresses attendees during Tuesday’s Market Insights Lunch.

IP Video Standard

Blackmagic 2110 IP products conform to the SMPTE ST-2110 standard for IP video, which specifies the transport, synchronization and description of 10 bit video, audio and ancillary data over managed IP networks for broadcast. Blackmagic 2110 IP products support SMPTE-2110-20 video, SMPTE-2110-21 traffic shaping/ timing, SMPTE-2110-30 audio and SMPTE-2110-40 for ancillary data.

Uses Simple 10G Ethernet for Low Cost

Blackmagic 2110 IP Converters are available in models with RJ-45 connectors for simple Cat6 copper cables or SFP sockets for optical fiber modules and cables. Using simple Cat6 copper cables means you can build SMPTE-2110 systems at a dramatically lower cost. Plus copper cables can remote power devices such as converters and cameras. There are also models for optical fiber Ethernet.

Incredibly Easy to Install

One of the biggest problems with SMPTE-2110 is needing an IT tech on standby to keep video systems running. Crestron Offers New Visual AI Direction

BOOTH 2300 Crestron Automate VX is introducing Visual AI Direction. The Visual AI Direction feature leverages edge AI to understand the angle someone is facing to switch from one camera to another so that the speaker remains well-framed and centered while avoiding less optimal shots of the side or back of someone’s head. With this solution, inperson attendees can act naturally to glance around the room to comment on the displays or other attendees in the room without worrying about how those moments are captured for virtual attendees.

Automate VX also provides software tools that enable rooms to be configured ahead of time with simple drag-and-drop functionality. The latest update allows furniture to be added directly to the Intelligent Video Room Designer software, making it simple to add tables and chairs to room layouts.

Another new feature, Breadcrumbs, enables faster deployments and fine-tuning of the system to accommodate unique acoustic characteristics within a space. Presenters may move freely around the room as they speak, as this feature collects the past 100 audio pickups from the microphones to provide important positional data for room usage. These data points allow IT managers to monitor usage and adjust audio pickup locations to yield the best results for room usage and proper switching.

HETMA Summit Drives Higher-Ed AV Forward

The HETMA Higher Education Summit returned to InfoComm 2025 for its third year. Spanning two days, held Monday and Tuesday this week, the Summit took deep dives in topics such as ethics and accessibility, security and zero trust, and successful capital planning in a communal, interactive environment. It was two informative days of panel discussions with higher-ed thought leaders, breakout sessions, and table discussions for everyone in attendance to discuss their challenges and successes in the educational space.

“The two-day HETMA Summit was once again a defining moment for the higher-ed vertical,” said Joe Way, HETMA cofounder and executive director, Digital Spaces at UCLA. “We didn’t just talk about gear—we confronted the real challenges of ethics, accessibility, security and policy, leadership, and tangible tools and skills needed to advance our careers. There was a genuine sense that we’re building a community that’s not just reactive to AV’s ever-changing landscape but actively driving it. It was amazing watching higher ed show up, speak out, and set the bar for one another in regard to these important issues.”

“I found this year’s Summit to be an exceptional testament to our commitment to advancing higher education technology,” added Stephen Ashby, HETMA education chair and multimedia operations specialist at Riverside Community College. “The discussions on privacy and ethics in AV were particularly vital, highlighting the critical need for responsible implementation. I was also deeply impressed by the focus on the human aspect of project success, emphasizing how strong rela-

tionships and collaboration unlock potential. Furthermore, the insights into cybersecurity by design underscored the proactive educational approach we champion. This summit truly reinforced HETMA’s dedication to providing comprehensive, forwardthinking educational resources for our community.”

The Summit featured three themed sessions, each one receiving their own keynote speaker. Don Merritt, PhD, director, Instructional Resources, University of Central Florida, spoke on “Navigating the Ethical Labyrinth: Privacy, FERPA, and AV in Education;” Tim Albright, president, AV Nation Media, had a fireside chat with Way called “Unlocking Potential: The Secret to Fulfilling Projects and Forging Lasting Relationships”; and Frank Padikkala, senior technical sales architect, Zoom, dove into security with “Design is the First Firewall: Securing AV Spaces.”

“The higher-ed market is the definition of an educated customer,” Albright said. “The AV pros that occupy these spaces are certified, talented,

ENCO Adds Dynamic Speaker ID to enCaption

BOOTH 2870 ENCO’s innovation cycle for live captioning continues with a powerful AI-driven voice fingerprinting technology that breaks new ground in speaker identification, according to the company. Now available in ENCO’s enCaption systems, the technology adds a truly novel function to the captioning and translation workflow through a single-stream audio mix detects and identifies each speaker in real time. By calling attention to each speaker, ENCO brings a higher level of readability and comprehension to the

captioning experience for the hard of hearing and for audiences absorbing in-venue presentations in busy or noisier environments.

Based on each speaker’s unique vocal characteristics, enCaption’s new dynamic speaker identification feature analyzes the pitch, timber, accent, and speaking style of each individual and uniquely identifies them as they speak. ENCO’s latest AI implementation within enCaption seamlessly inserts their names when identified, automatically labeling their captions in real-time.

and have the experience necessary. Getting those talented folks connected to manufacturers, consultants, and integrators outside of a sales process is important for their development.

“Reach out,” Albright added, highlighting part of his message in his fireside chat. “Use your network and see who’s connected to who. You really are only six degrees separated from the person you want and need to meet.”

“This year’s HETMA Summit exceeded our expectations once again,” concluded Erin MaherMoran, HETMA chair and IT manager of Classroom Technology at Johns Hopkins University. “The table discussions were incredibly valuable— higher-ed technology managers sharing practical solutions to today’s most pressing challenges. You could see lightbulbs going off as colleagues connected over shared experiences with ethics, security, and strategic planning. It reinforced why this collaborative approach to professional development is so essential for our field.”

AI and Digital Signage

AI continues to permeate every area of our personal and professional lives, and its impact on digital signage has the potential to be massive. On Tuesday morning, the topic was discussed in a session called “AI & Gen Z: Revolutionizing Digital Signage and Customer Engagement.” The panel was moderated by Laila Hede Jensen, CEO, Zenova, and featured Jessica Santiago, CEO, ArtRepublic Global; Frank Larsen, chief commercial officer, Signagelive; and Rafi Schell, the director, The Loop Lab, who was also the Gen Z representative for the group.

The session kicked off with the panelists revealing how each uses AI, which ranged from personal assistant-type duties to creating proposals and videos, to data analysis.

“One part that I’m extremely focused on, and it’s what my company is building within our platform, is the analyzing of spatial and sentiment data,” said Santiago. “Especially within the digital signage world, we have a massive opportunity because that’s the most valuable data for the next generation.”

AI is a cultural change, and Hede Jensen stressed the need for companies to embrace it and learn to use it properly. “Everybody in the whole organization needs to understand and embrace AI, because we need to learn how to work fast, and we need to learn how to be more productive,” she said. “We have to have KPIs at the executive level to implement AI in our workday.”

With Gen Z already being accustomed to looking at screens, getting them to notice digital signage will be a challenge that AI can help solve. “If you have passive signage, you will not get people to look up

system integration products tailored for educational applications.

from their small screens,” said Larsen. “If you want to engage on signage, you have to use smart methods, like AI, to have that engaging content.”

And AI can do more than just get people to notice the screens. “In retail and fast food they optimize AI because businesses usually will have to wait for an end-of-month report to figure out what works and what doesn’t,” said Schell. “But now, using AI analytics, they are able to see in real-time what’s working and what’s not, which ultimately saves them money, saves them time, and makes their marketing campaigns work more efficiently.”

At the conclusion, Hede Jensen reiterated the importance of getting everybody in the business up to speed on AI. “In order to stay competitive toward all the other companies that you’re up against, you need to equip your employees with the skills to leverage the AI-driven solutions that we have today,” she said. “If you add it to your culture, you will attract talent and the younger generation.”
