By David Wood Audiovisual technologies have a pivotal role to play in the shaping and enhancing of storytelling. That was the verdict of Oscar-winning director and producer Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, who delivered the ISE Opening Keynote, entitled ‘Seeing through the Eyes of Others: Redefining the art of storytelling’ on the ISE Show Floor Stage. In her speech, filmmaker Obaid-Chinoy shared examples from her work, showing how technology can be used at the heart of storytelling to make the audiovisual experience more personal, emotional and impactful, as well as to foster empathy and drive social change. Obaid-Chinoy said: “By the time I was 17 I was writing investigative articles. I was determined to become a filmmaker. I realised that if a door hasn’t opened for you it’s because you haven’t kicked it hard enough. I also realised that film can actually impact legislation. It can build bridges, it builds empathy and it can change the way we see ourselves.” Most widely known for her Academy Award-winning documentary shorts Saving Face (2012) and A Girl In The River: The Price Of Forgiveness (2015), Obaid-Chinoy is the first filmmaker from Pakistan to win an Oscar and the first female film director to have won two Oscars by the age of 37. She has since directed two episodes of Marvel’s critically acclaimed series Ms. Marvel, and is to be the first woman to direct a Star Wars film. The live-action movie will star Daisy Ridley reprising her role as Rey and is scheduled for release in 2026.

Making smart buildings pay off
By Monica Heck
Does a building being smart increase its value? It depends on who is looking at it, according to Michael Grant, co-founder and COO at Metrikus, speaking as part of a panel session on the ROI of smart buildings at yesterday’s Smart Building Conference. “There is an ROI for building developers who look at the full lifecycle, and for tenant occupiers who must understand the use of their space by people and manage its usage,” he said. “That is different to the landlord ROI, which is increasingly difficult to achieve because they have to offer more benefits to users and think about how they are going to keep current tenants and attract new ones.” Grant said landlords must be more proactive than ever to secure their own ROI and that smart building technology can help them on this path. He cited the ability to include usage metrics as part of tenant packages as one example. A focus on sustainability and energy efficiency in older buildings also delivers ROI, according to Palle Dinesen, CEO of Ubiqisense: “How can technology be used to retrofit buildings to make them efficient?
(L-R): Matthew Marson, JLL Technologies; Karen Warner, Arup; Michael Grant, Metrikus; and Palle Dinesen, Ubiqisense
We already have 85% of the buildings we need by 2050, but they aren’t energy efficient, or metrics are available but they are not used properly or actioned.” Defining the smartness of a building depends on increasing levels of standardisation within the industry, on both the technology and the measurement fronts. The measurements should be left to independent bodies, while standardising the technology could help address some remaining reticence among customers, according to Karen Warner, UKIMEA smart building business lead at Arup. “In London there is more comfort around the topic of smart buildings than outside of the capital, where people are worried about risk and cost. Making sure we are dealing with projects in standardised ways will help.” Integrated Systems Events hosted a gala dinner on Monday evening to celebrate 20 years of ISE and thank many of the people who have contributed to the success of the show over the years. The guest list included local politicians, association and partner representatives, as well as longstanding exhibitors. The event was held at the stunning 16th century Convent dels Àngels. Those in attendance included Pere Aragonès, president of Catalonia; Marilia Marton, secretary of culture São Paulo; Josep Santacreu, president, Barcelona Chamber of Commerce and second vice president, Fira; Carlos Prieto, delegate of the Spanish government in Catalonia; and Javi Lopez, co-chair, Euro-Latin American Parliamentray Assembly, European Parliament.

Sean Reardon warned that some companies still view cyber security as a ‘nice to have’ rather than an essential part of their business
AI to drive pro AV growth
By David Wood
AVIXA kicked off the Control Rooms Summit by sharing its latest research on the sector, which identified that AI is predicted to be a boon for the AV industry. Sean Wargo, VP, market intelligence, AVIXA, revealed that in a recent survey carried out by the association, 41% of respondents were positive about the impact of AI on the industry, with only 4% expressing a negative view. Wargo said: “The research showed that 30% saw it as becoming a useful tool in quality improvement, with spending expected to show a 10.3% CAGR over the next five years in managed services, which are predicted to see the biggest upside from AI.”
“For our integrator community, AI is an area where they are already seeing that traction with their clients,” he added. “If there ever was a time for this technology to mature, it is now.” Sean Reardon, principal cyber security consultant at DNV, then addressed the pressing topic of cyber security. He warned that some companies still have a view that cyber security is a ‘nice to have’ rather than an essential part of their business, particularly when it comes to their supply chains. He pointed out that cyber security is increasingly becoming a market differentiator, with 85% of large companies worrying about the cyber security of their suppliers. “That’s where I see some of the biggest headaches,” he added. “In my experience, the problem with supply chains is that nobody takes a holistic view, but if you don’t do something about it, it will go wrong. “If you haven’t started working on it now you are going to be lagging and exposing your investors to risk.”
‘Fake at scale’ becoming out of control
By Colby Ramsey
Exponential change is upon us, and those who aren’t seeing the big picture in the industry could be out of business in six months. These were the opening thoughts of CEDIA Fellow Rich Green, founder of Rich Green Design, as he hosted a session, entitled ‘Future Technologies: The Inside Scoop from Silicon Valley’, at the Smart Home Technology Conference yesterday. Green spoke about how this big picture will impact system design and CEDIA businesses, suggesting computers will reach singularity – an explosion of super intelligence – sooner than we think. “AI is the last step change in human evolution,” he told the audience. “We’re there now, and by the end of the decade businesses will have no choice but to leverage AI. significant company should have somebody full time working on AI for internal business processes, for writing proposals, for drafting CAD drawings and so on.” Green went on to discuss how companies are desperate to harness consumer engagement with micro-targeted advertising. “By the end of 2025, every high-resolution pixel will be generated in real time with AI; what effect will this have on home entertainment?” he asked. “Content becomes an abundant commodity. The question is how we manage that for our clients, and how they render that content in real time. “AI is a machine for making ‘fake’. This is ‘fake at scale’, and it is becoming out of human control because there are not enough humans to control this phenomenon.” He suggested that in order for AI to progress exponentially, better and faster hardware that goes beyond the GPU is needed. “People are also losing trust in the consumer metaverse,” he said. “But the industrial metaverse is taking off, and that’s where the money is right now.”

Educating investors in 2024 By Colby Ramsey Spiking interest rates and their effect on fundraising efforts was the big talking point during a panel session on 2024 investment trends on the Plug & Play Stage in Congress Square yesterday. Joan Cavallé I Oller, investment associate at 4Founders Capital, told the audience that the sector in Spain is now more mature both start-up wise and LP [limited parter] wise. “There are more LPs right now that better understand the asset class compared to some years ago,” he said. “There are also more funds, so more competitors and more options to compare with and choose from.” Anna Pellicer, VC associate and sustainability lead, ABAC Capital, said that institutional investors have been cautious of private equity

and venture capital so far this year because of what has happened within public markets. “They are definitely more interested in technology and innovation,” she said. “We’re seeing them opening their doors to talk to us and understand how the venture space works.” Oller added that when it comes to assessing a company, especially in the early stages, introducing technology resources and removing the human bias is crucial to the whole analysis. “We’re talking to founders to understand more about their profiles and ambitions, and why they want to create something within the current market environment,” he explained. “We’re also seeing more and more international investors in Spain-based companies, and UK and even US companies opening offices here just to recruit tech talent, which is of high quality, but also may be a bit cheaper than in other geographies.” Pellicer believes that 2024 will be a good year in terms of equity and the type of deal that can be invested in: “We’re seeing solid teams and very good products. I think there’s a lot of talent in Barcelona,” she concluded.

AI set to have a huge impact on creativity
By David Wood
Artificial intelligence (AI) is expected to have a huge impact on the creative process, adding new levels of creativity for content producers as well as speeding up production processes. That was the verdict of a panel of AI creatives from The LED Studios, Respeecher and Pixel Artworks speaking at an AVIXA Xchange LIVE: Ask the Experts session. Jessica Cooper, account director, Pixel Artworks, said: “I’m enjoying how it opens things up, allowing you to create content faster in different styles.” Andreea Timis, commercial director, EMEA, The LED Studios, added: “Over the last year AI has had a profound impact on digital art, adding a new level of creativity to what we can do. But the main value for us is more to do with production processes, helping save time in driving the right content to the right displays, which can take a lot of time and cost a lot of money if done manually.” However, the panel agreed that the increasingly widespread use of AI in content generation would create a wide range of copyright issues which will need ironing out. Anna Bulakh, head of ethics and partnerships, Respeecher, insisted: “When AI uses our own personalities we are delivering our biometric data to creators, so there needs to be trust between the tool providers and the users, providing legal protection for that data. Regulators will be trying to review the copyright to make sure that the individuals become the legal owners of their own AI replicas.” “We will have to create a new market of licensing for this content.

There are a huge number of interesting questions to be answered.” Cooper added: “We find lots of clients are very enthusiastic about using AI technology but their main pushback is that they don’t want to be ‘bitten on the bum’ later down the line… when copyright laws protecting individuals’ IP become clearer.”
America’s Cup head of television Stephen Nuttall used an ISE Show Floor Stage Tech Talk to reveal some of the ground-breaking technology that will be on show during the forthcoming boat race, to be hosted by the City of Barcelona in October 2024. “We intend for this to be the most-watched America’s Cup race ever,” said Nuttall, who plans to top the record-breaking 942 million global audience of the event when it took place in Auckland, New Zealand in 2021. The 25m-long boats will race 100-150m offshore in Barcelona, reaching speeds of 100km per hour. Nuttall outlined a new centralised reconnaissance program enabling all the teams to monitor their opposition. “All the monitoring software for the race is brand new,” he said, “as are a series of autonomous battery-powered marker boats which will be used to set the course. “We have Capgemini as official data partners and an on-screen video graphics system to bring the data to life, with much of it generated by AI.” Nuttall added that each boat will be equipped with 185kg of production technology, allowing the event to run two 4K HDR video channels back from each yacht in real time. There will be more than 12 cameras on each boat, controlled from the land, and enough mics to enable surround sound production so viewers can hear what the sailors say onboard. They will be connected to the production base over an RF network. The race will also be followed by two helicopters with gyro-stabilised camera systems, and drones. “The challenge is to find a drone that can fly long enough and fast enough and carry a big enough camera to do the job,” said Nuttall.

Mediapro and Microsoft launch AI and synthetic media lab

Cañigueral: “Companies are trying to move fast with AI, but they face a lot of speed bumps”
AI: The good, the bad, and the anxiety
By Michael Burns
The Catalan Audiovisual Cluster launched its Switch Report, entitled ‘AI Behind the Screen’ with two thought-provoking presentations on the ISE Partner Stage. Report author Joan Rosés, editor of the publication Collateral Bits, gave an overview of the latest trends for text generation, textto-image, and image-to-video generation, with some eye-catching examples of the use of AI in creating avatars and synthetic voices. He also showed examples of ‘synthetic hyperrealism’ or ‘deep fakes’, as well as completely AI-generated content in the media industry. “Artificial intelligence is starting to be used as a common resource for many tasks in production, post-production, visual effects creation and virtual production,” said Rosés. “We’ll spend less time on writing and composing soundtracks, and more time in pre-production and less on post. We will also see the creation of new jobs,” he added. Jobs and the impact of AI tools on work was the focus of the second presentation, by Albert Cañigueral, consultant at the Barcelona Supercomputing Center. Introducing the topic with two phrases: AInxiety and FOBO (fear of becoming obsolete), Cañigueral explored the “myths and realities” surrounding AI in the future of work, acknowledging both the potential benefits and drawbacks of AI on human jobs. “In the report, you can also find all the risks [around using AI]: inaccuracy, cyber security, access to the right data and intellectual property infringement,” he said. “Companies are trying to move fast with AI, but they face a lot of speed bumps.” Cañigueral said it’s crucial to reimagine work processes in light of AI’s potential. “What is the society that we want to build with the tools?” he asked. “Instead of asking ‘will AI take my job?’, the question should be, ‘what are we going to do to guarantee that AI deployment [leads to] social and economic progress?’” The Switch Report is available to download at www.clusteraudiovisual.cat/en/switch-observatory

Grup Mediapro announced an artificial intelligence and synthetic media laboratory in collaboration with Microsoft at its stand in Hall 4 yesterday. Mediapro CEO Tatxo Benet explained how the new collaboration will allow the company to respond to market opportunities and needs with tech innovation and in-depth business knowledge. The collaboration is based on a humancentred approach, adhering to all legal [L-R]: Alberto Granados, commitments and ethical principles in the president of Microsoft Spain, with Mediapro conceptualisation, development, deployment CEO Tatxo Benet and use of AI solutions, which is the purpose of the laboratory. The initiative will involve around 100 people from both companies, depending on the projects, and has been driven by Mediapro’s Artificial Intelligence Center, created in 2022 with the aim of leveraging AI to create new business models, products and services, and provide AV professionals with creation, production and management tools. “Our continual embrace of innovation is something that has defined us as a company for 30 years and is something we always undertake in hand with the top technological partners,” said Benet. “AI is going to revolutionise the sector and we must be prepared by creating our own solutions and applications and determining the role AI will take in the audiovisual industry.”
Solving the problem of digital inequity By Colby Ramsey Giga, a UNICEF-International Telecommunication Union initiative, highlighted how it is working towards its goal of achieving universal school connectivity through tech innovation, partnerships and collaboration, on the ISE Partner Stage yesterday. Attendees were told how Coffin: “It’s our mission to the company is working with connect every school in the world to the internet by 2030” governments to map schools, primarily in Africa and South America. “This is being driven through two organisations: UNICEF and the ITU. We’re working very closely with senior officials to look at how we can create change,” explained Jane Coffin, senior advisor, Giga. “It’s our mission to connect every school in the world to the internet by 2030, and every young person to information, opportunity and choice.” “We’ve used AI to identify more than 29,000 schools around the world, from Ghana to Kenya, Tunisia, Rwanda and Sierra Leone, and we’re also modelling and analysing telecom infrastructure data in more than 10 countries in Africa,” she added. “This is empowering educators and giving ministries an opportunity to work better together.”

Cyber threats get real for integrators
By Michael Burns
‘The Art of Securing Audio and Video: A cybersecurity perspective’ on the Smart Home Technology Stage yesterday offered an expert insight into the IT risks and dangers facing not just homeowners and business clients, but integrators too. The panel, comprising Jeff Sonnleitner, network specialist and information security instructor at Moraine Park Technical College, and JB Fowler, chief business development officer, Domotz, was hosted by Walt Zerbe, senior director of technology and standards for CEDIA. The importance of addressing unsecured operating systems and default passwords in IoT systems was highlighted. “The challenge is that manufacturers are not securing their hardware or updating their software or firmware,” said Sonnleitner. The conversation moved on to the importance of cyber security training and ethics for integrators, potential liability for home network integrators in case of security breaches, and the need for clear contracts and regulatory protections. “We haven’t yet had a liability case where a system is breached and the integrator is held liable, but it’s coming,” said Zerbe. The panel agreed on the importance of password management tools and multi-factor authentication in home networks. Sonnleitner noted that having gamers on residential or educational networks can be particularly challenging to manage in terms of security due to their tendency to connect with friends and share passwords, while a common

problem with small businesses is where everyone is designated as an admin user ‘to make life easier’ instead of restricting full network privileges to the IT department. “If you’ve got five people who have admin, you have five attack surfaces where you’ve increased your vulnerability fivefold for a computer to get corrupted and then infect the system,” said Zerbe. The panel also agreed that LANs should be segmented, especially for residential customers, with a guest network being separate to the control network. “For any integrator that’s going into a residential application environment, I think that’s a minimum,” said Fowler. “Depending on the size of the network, depending on your customers, I think you need to look at audio LANs, and you need to look at video LANs. I think you can look at security LANs and control LANs too. There are lots of different ways in which you can segment a network in order to help with cyber security.”

Take a dive into Hall 4 for an entertaining experiential demonstration highlighting plastic pollution that integrates live show, augmented reality, video game content and TV production. The experience by 3Cat (the digital platform of Catalan broadcaster CCMA, owner of the TV3 channel) was inaugurated on the first day of the show, as a mezzo-soprano mermaid (pictured left) sang and swam through AR plastics that threaten to virtually drown her. The content, which can be seen continuously at the 3Cat stand (4D500) during the four days of the show, revolves around the problem of excess plastic in the oceans. Visitors can don VR headsets and remove the virtual plastic to prevent the mermaid from drowning (pictured right). To create the experience, 3Cat worked in collaboration with theatre company La Fura dels Baus, Barcelona-based Produktia, and other members of the Catalan AV Cluster, including Sono and Eikonos.

The evolution of Evo
UK loudspeaker manufacturer Funktion-One has evolved one of its earliest product releases with the introduction of the Evo 2 at ISE 2024. Building on the company’s classic Res 2 loudspeaker, the Evo 2 is the latest addition to the Evo Series, delivering better performance in a smaller enclosure. Featuring the latest Funktion-One driver technology and highly refined tuning, Evo 2 is a medium dispersion, fully horn-loaded, three-way loudspeaker. Its versatile format is designed for a range of applications, including as a four-point club system or a two-wide flown system for medium-sized venues, says the company. Suited to ground stacking for small events, flying singly or in pairs for wider coverage and larger audience areas, or used as fills supporting Vero, Evo or Vero VX systems, its Butterfly Plate system enables quick and easy rigging for single and twin deployment. Tony Andrews, Funktion-One founder and director of R&D, said: “Although it is a replacement for the Res 2, we have managed to make it smaller and get more out of it. Form follows function. It’s like the beauty of a bird’s wing; all these things have to be a certain shape in nature. Something just works and you carry on using it. We’re still coming to terms with the clarity of it.” —kevin emmott www.funktion-one.com

Breaking boundaries with creative AI Digital artist Jeroen van der Most will give a keynote on the ISE Show Floor Stage this evening. He has also created content for the massive new transparent LED screen on the Fira façade which will be showcased in two performances today. His keynote, entitled ‘Breaking Boundaries with Creative AI’, “will take the audience on a journey into my mind using AI; it’ll be a bizarre trip where you’ll encounter some weird things”, said Most. “First, I will explore how we can innovate art, using AI to change it from something static into something more fluid. Then, I’ll explore using technologies such as AI to build closer, deeper relationships with non-human entities.” Most hopes his keynote will give people ideas that AI can be more than just a tool for productivity, efficiency and commercial gain. “It can also be used to create something more interesting, something beautiful, something from the heart and purely about the rational mind,” he said. “It can connect with other people and nature in a deeper way. That’s what’s behind my talk.” Most’s works have been commissioned
by organisations including Amnesty International, Nvidia, NH Hotels, Sogeti and Nike/Foot Locker, and have been displayed in museums such as Te Papa (the Museum of New Zealand) and ZKM Kahlsruhe, as well as at art fairs, conferences and technology shows. What’s ahead for the pro-AV industry in 2024
Peter Hansen, economist, AVIXA
The year ahead looks to be a stabilising one for most regions around the globe. Stabilisation is good, but not all good. On the more negative side, stabilisation for live events means slowing spending. AVIXA’s 2023 Industry Outlook and Trends Analysis (IOTA) reveals that live events has been the slowest to recover from the pandemic, so while it still saw strong recovery growth in 2023, that flattens out in 2024 and beyond. On the more positive side, economic stabilisation in Europe will support AV spending as meaningfully stronger GDP growth is projected in 2024 than what we saw in 2023. In APAC, 2024 projections see continued strong GDP and pro-AV growth, though at modestly declining rates. Those declines reflect a slowly approaching crossroads for APAC. Over the past couple of decades, APAC – largely driven by China – has been a global growth engine. It’s buttressed the global economy and blossomed into the largest region by total AV revenue. That story is evolving. Real estate market weakness is one of several reasons China sees long-term growth declining. This will be a pivotal year to determining if China can find ways to be
resilient and resume its powerhouse growth or if the slowdown is inevitable. Likewise, for countries such as India, Vietnam and Indonesia, 2024 will be pivotal in seeing if other countries can take up the mantle of rising GDP, a burgeoning middle class and pro-AV build-out. Live events have come back in terms of attendance, but pro-AV expenditures have been a little slower on the rebound as providers use revenues for restoring financial health rather than maximum pro AV. But recovery is happening, and we’re seeing several spectacular examples of it. The Taylor Swift Eras Tour is projected to bring in more than $1 billion in total revenue. Sphere in Las Vegas has reawakened fascination with the frontiers of experiential AV. Live events, and the experience economy more broadly, are the place to watch for exciting new applications and areas of growth in 2024. Supply chains greatly eased in 2023 and revealed unanticipated unevenness in the market. In 2022, sales were frequently dictated by availability. End users took what they could get, and manufacturers could sell whatever they could build. Now, normal shopping patterns are resuming. Consumers are again weighing options and choosing specific needs. This is unfortunately revealing that the market has moved away from certain features and certain products. For example, we’ve seen volume or price-related challenges in categories such as displays, projection and USB cameras. Through no fault of their own, some companies have been caught flat-footed this year. I think the biggest challenge in 2024 is for the channel to get their fingers back on the pulse of end user needs. With choice free from supply limitations, where will demand take us? Each level has a role in figuring this out, from integrator to distributor to manufacturer. In corporate offices, this ‘figuring out’ process will be especially difficult. Our research confirms a hybrid future, but the best practices for AV deployment to serve those needs remain to be determined. For more insight on trends in the AV industry, tune in to AVIXA’s Xceptional Insights podcast at www.avixa.tv. Also visit www.avixa.org/market-intelligence.

CEDIA’s reinvigorated research approach uncovers a robust professional smart home industry
With new data streams and industry-wide participation, CEDIA captures a holistic view of the smart home industry in its 2023 Professional Smart Home Market Analysis In December, CEDIA released its 2023 US and UK Professional Smart Home Market Analysis in partnership with market research firm Ancrage Consulting. For the first time ever, CEDIA has bolstered integrator survey responses with specification data from D-Tools, Portal and WeQuote, and insights from leading manufacturers and distributors. Residential integrators of all types and sizes are represented in the reports. Data was collected through short surveys fielded to integrators from July to August 2023 as well as through actual sales pipeline reports. CEDIA has structured the analysis to identify key priorities, including the size of the integrated home industry, areas of expenditure, project size, frequency and type, preferred brands by category, and future trends and investment areas.

Today’s Featured Speaker
Keeping pace with ongoing change
By David Davies
smart workplace summit ise Gary Keene, Smart Workplace Summit co-ordinator, AV consultant and coach
One of the primary reasons that Gary Keene was so keen to be involved in the latest Smart Workplace Summit (SWS), which starts today and continues tomorrow afternoon, is that many companies are still undermined by a fundamental disconnect between the facilities management and audiovisual teams. “For instance, there can often be drivers and incentives which facilities managers have that AV teams are only dimly aware of,” says Keene, a former technology leader (IT and AV) at Google who is now heading his own business, Curved Air Consulting, and coaching at the University of the Arts London (UAL). “One of my main interests now is in exploring how collaboration can be more embedded into the design and ongoing changes that occur within workplaces.” The fact that the pace of change is only continuing to accelerate will be gently underlined throughout SWS. Today will cover several of the most pressing topics currently facing all organisations, including cyber security and AI, with speakers including Shaun Reardon. An expert on global cyber security and a principal consultant at DNV, Reardon will explore the internal and external threats that companies need to be aware of.
Raising awareness
“Shaun is doing a lot of work to raise awareness within the AV industry about the challenges faced by facilities managers and IT teams through the poor deployment of collaborative technology,” says Keene. “I think the session will cover that, as well as the [specific issues] related to the ‘work from anywhere’ audience, because a lot of the challenges these days derive from the very fast roll-out of hybrid solutions on the back of Covid.” This afternoon will conclude with a “deep dive into AI and how it is being incorporated into products and solutions, as well as the ethics and how AI should be used”, he continues. Tomorrow, the spotlight will be on workplace solutions. This will include a keynote case study from Marcus Saunders, who is associate director, technical resources, at the UAL: London College of Fashion. He will examine how the faculty sought to combine resources spread across six separate sites into one new, 14-storey building supporting 5,000 students, with flexibility of use as the chief priority. “The ability to change the configuration of the teaching spaces over time is critical, because it’s almost

‘A lot of the challenges these days derive from the very fast roll-out of hybrid solutions on the back of Covid’ impossible to work out in advance how six previously distinct sites are going to have to share facilities,” says Keene. “So that means both the spaces – and the technology available within them – have to be highly flexible and able to be changed at short notice.” The second afternoon will continue with an examination of how corporates and institutions are utilising emerging technologies to improve the workplace and hybrid working experiences. This will be followed up by a session on climate change, sustainability and the integration of ESG into company operations, before the event wraps up with an interactive audience session discussing the workplace of the future. “We are going through a period of phenomenal change in both technology terms and the way that companies operate, and I am really looking forward to exploring some of these developments at the Smart Workplace Summit,” concludes Keene. Smart Workplace Summit takes place today and tomorrow from 15:30-18:00 in room CC5.1

The MG9 series of LED panels from Yestech boasts enhanced structural design, with improvements in both load-bearing capacity and tensile strength, compared to existing models. The series is positioned as a universal choice for a wide range of applications, whether at a stage performance, sports competition or other event venues. The MG9 series has a 500x500mm cabinet and ranges from 2.9mm to 5.9mm in pitch. It can cover all indoor and outdoor rental applications, including floor tiles. In fact, the base of the MG9 now has a thicker design to improve its load-bearing capacity and durability when applied on floor tiles. Yestech also claims improved reliability and stability for the series. Cabinet corners on the P2.9 model are reinforced with edge-lock protection, and for all the units the LED’s thrust has been increased and edge distances optimised. These upgrades can reduce the loss of LEDs due to collisions or during maintenance. They also extend the lifespan of all the equipment, according to the company. —david fox www.yes-led.com

Focus on the future
Levelling the hybrid team playing field
Neat is using ISE 2024 to announce the availability of Neat Center, a device that works in tandem with the company’s frontof-the-room video devices to frame people in the meeting room regardless of where they are seated or looking. When those in the room turn away from the front-of-the-room device to talk among themselves, Neat Center has been designed to give remote attendees clear and unobtrusive audio and visuals, helping them maintain conversational context and pick up on non-verbal cues. Neat Center houses a 360° three-lens camera and omnidirectional 16-mic array, along with advanced AI that dynamically analyses the room and people within it. Its self-calibrating design means it can be moved around a meeting space or table to wherever is most suitable, but it can also be set up and installed with only a single network and power cable. —COLBY RAMSEY www.neat.no

Major update to Questra software
LD Systems, an Adam Hall group company, has launched Questra v1.2 at ISE, updating its design and management software. Providing access to the full DSP capabilities of all LD Systems’ audio installation devices, Questra enables users to configure audio networks of any size and manage and control every device from a single application. Users can create custom interfaces that can be operated from Windows computers or any Android or iOS device, while administrators can create users, assign roles and limit access to ensure that critical network settings cannot be modified. Questra v1.2 boasts an improved system architecture and an expanded device library, while a new Scenes feature provides global automation of actions involving all devices in a project. The company says that new implementations, including an Elements Library, widgets, multi-selection in pre-edit mode, as well as direct software upload for QTP touch panels, contribute to an improved user experience. —kevin emmott www.ld-systems.com The uniCOS solution is the highlight of the show for Televic

Q&A
John Henkel, director of SMB product marketing, Netgear
Stand: 5C750 Away from your own stand, what are you most looking forward to seeing at ISE 2024? Selfishly, I am looking forward to seeing the growing number of partners we have around the show floor. AV over IP is really booming, so I expect to see many more manufacturers moving to IP. With that transition comes the need for a strong networking partner. Netgear is the only networking partner with a dedicated team of design engineers, a huge selection of switches, and the Netgear AV OS, making configuration a snap.
Where are the opportunities for companies in the growing convergence of broadcast and AV technologies? I believe that just as some of the consumer technologies crossed over to pro AV, the same is happening with broadcast. NDI has made a huge impact and I think the same will be true with IPMX, based on the SMPTE ST 2110 standard. Both of these and other protocols are simply Ethernet for us, so with the right settings, it passes right through.

Converging broadcast and pro AV
By Andrew Starks, board member and marketing workgroup chair, AIMS Historically, the broadcast and pro-AV industries have operated independently; pro AV has lacked uniform standards, relying on interfaces such as HDMI, DisplayPort and a variety of proprietary AV-over-IP technologies. In contrast, the broadcast industry has maintained consistent standards. IPMX, created by AIMS in collaboration with VSF and AMWA, bridges these sectors by enhancing broadcast standards to cater to pro-AV demands. It integrates elements of SMPTE ST 2110, adding features such as asynchronous audio and video support suitable for both live production and pro-AV presentations, 4K60 transmission over a single gigabit network
and HDCP for content security. IPMX simplifies equipment compatibility and manufacturing processes, thereby reducing costs for customers and streamlining infrastructure management. It expands equipment options for broadcasters by supporting more diverse video formats and opens larger market opportunities for manufacturers by enabling broader product applications, particularly in the display and camera sectors. IPMX also includes a control layer, provided by AMWA’s NMOS specifications, which enhances device interoperability and eases the dependency on myriad proprietary control system protocols. Marking a significant shift in media
production, IPMX erases the boundaries between the broadcast and pro-AV industries, aligning with the current trend towards IP-centric workflows. It promises enhanced interoperability, streamlined operations and new opportunities for creativity and technological advancement, catalysing innovation and standardisation. For more on IPMX, you can attend the IPMX Comes of Age at ISE 2024 session on the ISE Partner Stage, room CC5.3, today at 11:40.

Key themes shaping the pro-audio industry
By Grant Youngman, senior market analyst, Futuresource Consulting When it comes to trends in audio, it makes sense to look at immersive audio production and distribution first; it’s truly taken the professional audio industry by storm. With incredible shows and performances going viral and high-profile acquisitions, this is proving to be not just a trend, but a revolution that’s enhancing everything from studio creations to live performances. Every note can be placed just where it needs to be, creating a breathtaking audio experience. It doesn’t show any signs of waning and throughout 2024 we expect immersive audio to be a key theme. The live event market is bouncing back stronger than ever post-Covid, with recordbreaking tours and festivals having taken
place globally in 2023. This resurgence is fuelled by pent-up demand and a craving for live experiences. From small gigs to grand festivals, the hunger for high-quality sound is driving demand for professional audio equipment. It’s an exciting time for the industry. And finally, the ‘new standard’ in networked audio; the trend towards standardised and versatile audio networking solutions enables greater interoperability and efficient audio transmission. In turn, this will have a huge impact on all areas of professional audio, which is indicative of an industry embracing more integrated and sophisticated audio solutions.

The limitations imposed by short transmission distances can mean that Sony’s Crystal LED hasn’t been suited to projects that need a greater distance between the controller and the cabinet. This is why the company has introduced its new ZRA-T1 optical transmitter and the ZRA-R1 optical receiver for its Crystal LED BH and CH series. They expand the connection distance to 300m (30 times its current capabilities), while offering a high-quality signal. The Crystal LED CH series for indoor use has only been introduced recently and is on show for the first time at ISE. According to Sony, it “delivers a truly immersive experience with colour, texture and depth realised through high-efficiency ultra-fine LED technology”. It offers enhanced contrast (more than 1,000,000:1), thanks to Sony’s Deep Black surface treatment technology, and high brightness (1,300cd/ sqm). The units are designed to reproduce colour gradations with high accuracy, using a 22-bit Super Bit Mapping process that’s enabled by the X1 for Crystal LED picture processor. There are two models currently: the ZRD-CH12D (with its 1.27mm pixel pitch) and ZRD-CH15D (1.59mm pixel pitch). —david fox www.pro.sony

Alcons M-series Pro-Ribbon Reference Monitors The M-series is the group of reference monitor systems, to be used for critical sound reproduction in any application where ultimate analytical sound reproduction is required, combined with an exceptionally wide dynamic range. Designed with focus on the lowest distortion possible in every detail. By implementing Alcons’ proribbon technology for mid and high frequencies, a very-fast
impulse response with up-to-90% less distortion over traditional technologies is achieved. This enables the M-series to offer an intuitive linear response, noncompressed identical tonal balance at any SPL. The superb transient response and the lack of “time-smear” results in the absence of listening fatigue. This maintains a stable, analytical 1:1 reference, even after prolonged listening sessions. It’s hearing instead of listening!

Taking a sensor-led approach to digital signage
Digital display interactivity specialist Nexmosphere is highlighting how the application of the right timing and content changes the way people perceive a campaign. For example, the addition of presence sensors on digital signage ensures that content is played on screen at the correct time, thereby increasing the impact on the viewer as opposed to having looping or scheduled content. Accordingly, Nexmosphere’s sensor platform is designed specifically for digital signage integration. This allows system integrators to increase the impact of digital signage using presence sensing, pick-up detection, shopper guidance tools and products for creating UIs; for example, with touch buttons, AirButtons or HandGesture sensors.
