CES 2023 in Las Vegas is a Show with a Purpose

Traveling around the United States and Europe this fall, it’s been amazing and gratifying to see the excitement building around CES 2023. So many of you are thrilled to be back in Las Vegas and enjoying the one-of-a-kind, five sense experience that is CES. And what an experience it will be! With over two million square feet of exhibit space, CES 2023 is over 50% larger than CES 2022. It includes huge global brands and some 1000 new businesses from around the globe in Eureka Park, our home for startups.

It’s particularly exciting because CES 2023 will be a show with a purpose. We’re partnering with the UN and the World Academy of Art and Science (WAAS) to showcase how tech is supporting human securities –or as we typically call them, human rights. That means the right to healthcare, food, clean air and water, personal safety, political and community involvement and more. You’ll see that theme play out in exhibits on the show floor, as well as in new Human Security for All (HS4A) Innovation Awards – given to companies for products that promise to improve lives and make our world a better place.

The #HS4A theme will also inspire remarks by many of our keynote speakers, like AMD’s Dr. Lisa Su, outlining her vision for how high-performance and adaptive computing transforms lives, and John Deere’s John May – our first ever ag tech keynoter – sharing how technology can help feed a growing world. They’ll join a phenomenal lineup of headline speakers including BMW’s Oliver Zipse, Delta’s Ed Bastian, Nasdaq’s Adena T. Friedman, and Stellantis’ Carlos Tavares, part of our

lineup of more than 750 speakers across more than 200 conference sessions.

While the show itself will run from January 5-8, expect big headlines even before CES 2023 opens to the public. That’s because Media Days (Jan 3-4) will feature press conferences – the perfect place to launch new products – with big brands like Samsung, LG, and Panasonic. Media Days will also feature the official media preview event of CES, Unveiled Las Vegas, which offers access to exhibitor product innovations and CTA’s highly anticipated annual market research presentation, Tech Trends to Watch.

Speaking of trends, CES 2023 will spotlight some exciting areas of growth in the tech world. That includes our transportation and mobility area in the sold-out West Hall. Nearly 300 automotive brands – our biggest automotive event to date – will showcase the latest innovations in mobility, electric and autonomous vehicles, hardware and accessories. Through our digital health exhibits, you can discover the tools and technologies lowering costs, improving health equity and saving lives. And after a year of buzz, we’ve created a whole new category to showcase Web3 and Metaverse – featuring technologies like blockchain and cryptocurrency. While you’ll see those technologies across the show floor, they have a new home in Central Hall.

This January, you’ll also see the latest innovations in areas like smart home, entertainment, food tech, gaming and e-sports, robotics, AI and more! Visit www.ces.tech to discover what’s in store and to sign up for CES news and industry insights.

CTA Expands Touchless Venue Experience for CES 2023

As part of the Consumer Technology Association’s (CTA) commitment to create a healthy environment to conduct and further global business, CES 2023 attendees can expect an expanded touchless experience. Health and safety measures will be taken across all CES 2023 venues and will include increased fresh air flow and filtration systems, hand sanitizing stations, door greeters, and touchless public facilities.

“As producer of the world’s most influential tech event, we are proactively committed to creating an environment that reduces health risks for our attendees,” said Gary Shapiro, President and CEO, CTA. “In-person events such as CES are critical to advancing business. A more touchless venue experience at CES 2023 will provide a roadmap for future industry events on health and safety efforts for attendees.”

CES 2023 will likely be the largest in-person, audited business event to take place in the U.S. since early 2020, with an exhibit footprint 40 percent larger than CES 2022. As an industry leader, CTA will implement measures at CES 2023 to create a healthy business environment, including:

FRESH AIRFLOW AND DOOR GREETERS

• Fresh airflow has been increased in ventilation systems across venues, including the Las Vegas Convention Center, Venetian Expo and ARIA.

• Exterior doors will be opened and monitored to allow fresh air flow where possible.

• Door greeters will be stationed at remaining doors to open as attendees enter.

HAND SANITIZING

• Touchless hand sanitizing units will be installed throughout all facilities in high traffic areas.

• All meeting rooms, conference areas, food areas, lounges, customer service areas, information kiosks, elevators, escalators, lounges and offices will have hand sanitizing stations.

TOUCHPOINTS

• Badge pickup locations will utilize touchless badge printing.

• Customer service centers will offer touchless payment for onsite registrations.

• All microphones and shared AV equipment will be sanitized between use.

• Restrooms, handrails and doors will be cleaned throughout the day.

• Sinks, toilets, paper towel dispensers will be touchless.

• Cashless payment systems will be available at venue food outlets and business centers.

A full list of implementation measures can be found at CES 2023 Health Protocols.

John Deere Chairman/ CEO Set for CES Keynote

First-time keynoter John May, Chairman/CEO of John Deere, the iconic manufacturer of agricultural machinery, will share how purpose-driven sustainability and advancements in technology address feeding a growing global population

An exhibitor since 2019 and firsttime keynoter, John Deere continues to showcase how technical innovation is fundamental to the farming business. The company has introduced global audiences to the world’s first fully autonomous tractor and to its 2022 Innovation Award winning See & Spray technology.

See & Spray is a technologically advanced, huge robot for the agriculture industry that leverages computer vision and machine learning to detect the difference between plants and weeds, and precisely spray herbicide only on the weeds. This groundbreaking plant-level management technology gives a machine the gift of vision and reduces the use of herbicide by up to 80 percent, benefiting the farmer, the surrounding community and the environment

See & Spray was a CES 2022 award winner in two categories: Best of Innovation, in Robotics, and an Innovation Awards Honoree in Vehicle Intelligence & Transportation.

CES 2023 Unveiled: From Human Security to New Technology

CES is usually all about innovation. The focus at CES 2023, however, will be on something more: innovation with a purpose. At CES Unveiled in midNovember in New York City, CTA President/CEO Gary Shapiro laid out modern rights that CES and consumer technology would address under the Human Security for All rubric.

Conceived by the U.N. in 1994, these Human Se-

curity for All rights, recognize the importance of personal wellbeing and security pillars tied to an individual’s experience in life, including: food, access to health care, personal income, environmental protection, personal safety, community security and political freedom.

“We didn’t create these rights or securities, but we realized they correspond perfectly to parts of CES,

Bastian, Kassan Set for C Space Keynotes

Set for Jan. 5, 2023, at ARIA Resort & Casino, the CES 2023 C Space keynote conversation will feature Delta Air Lines CEO Ed Bastian and MediaLink founder and CEO Michael E. Kassan. The keynote, “Building Connection & Community in a Non-Stop World,” will explore how successful consumer brands are combining technology with ingenuity to engage dedicated followers and create superfans.

The C Space keynote panel features leading figures of the marketing world, including Instacart CMO Laura Jones and Group Black CEO & Co-Founder Travis Montaque, among other guests, who will explore how brands are engaging consumers with increasingly personalized experiences.

“From in-flight experiences to on-demand enter-

tainment and a world of content in between, brands are using creativity, personalization and humanity in equal measure to win customers’ hearts and minds,” Bastian said. “This panel is all about the transformative power of connecting—with ourselves, with each other and with the world we inhabit.

“Delta has transformed travel for the delight of consumers and has set a high bar for brands,” said Kassan. “I look forward to diving into the learnings with Ed, as well as our panel of marketing leaders, and offering the industry some inspiring takeaways.”

Bastian is a familiar face at CES, having delivered the first keynote remarks by an airline executive at CES 2020. Kassan is also a regular participant on the C Space keynote stage.

Innovations in Human Security for All in CES 2023 Spotlight

At CES 2023 the Consumer Technology Association (CTA) is partnering with the World Academy of Art and Science (WAAS) to showcase the critical role of technology in support of the United Nations efforts to advance human security for all.

CES 2023 will shine a spotlight on how technology helps people tackle the world’s most pressing problems. Human Security for All will be a theme throughout the show, from conference programming to keynotes highlighting innovation and products improving the lives of people around the world.

“Tech innovation gives us the tools to work toward a better world and has always been the catalyst for historic change. We are proud to partner with the World Academy of Art and Science in support of the United Nations,” said Gary Shapiro, President and CEO of the Consumer Technology Association. “Now more than ever, people are looking to the tech industry for leadership as we develop creative solutions to the world’s greatest challenges.”

First introduced by the UN in 1994, the concept of human security recognizes the importance of personal wellbeing and lists security pillars tied to an individual’s experience in life, including:

food, access to health care, personal income, environmental protection, personal safety, community security and political freedom. CES 2023 will showcase the latest tech innovations and thought leaders dedicated to addressing these most pressing global challenges. CTA will expand the CES Innovation Awards to incorporate technologies advancing the UN Human Security categories.

“The COVID-19 pandemic, global warming, the high cost of education and the surging food shortages resulting from the war in Ukraine illustrate the importance of developing innovative solutions to the full range of human security issues.” said Garry Jacobs, President, World Academy of Art & Science. “We are proud to be partnering with CTA to promote awareness and action to address the challenges to human security.”

The Consumer Technology Association (CTA) also announced the first keynote speaker for CES 2023. John Deere Chairman and CEO John May will join other John Deere executives to share how purpose-driven sustainability and advancements in technology are addressing one of the world’s greatest challenges—feeding a growing global population. This will be the first time in CES history that an agriculture technology company exec-

utive will take the mainstage for a keynote at the show. John Deere first debuted at CES 2019 and has been exhibiting each year since, highlighting the importance of innovation in agriculture.

“The opportunity for technology and sustainability to positively impact the world is most present in agriculture, where farmers continue to be challenged to feed our growing population,” said John May, Chairman and CEO. “John Deere is focused on developing technology with a purpose, to make our customers more efficient and sustainable. The work they do affects every single person and we’re honored to have the opportunity to help tell their story on the mainstage.”

Sustainability, digital health, metaverse, electric vehicles, transportation and mobility will have a commanding presence at the show. CES 2023 will explore the power of technology to revolutionize how people connect, featuring new categories including Web3; using crypto and blockchain to usher in a new digital economy; and remote work tech, exploring how tech is bringing the office into the home to maximize collaboration and creativity.

Using SoundJam as a foundation, the trio developed iTunes, which became the cornerstone of Apple’s media devices and services including the iPod, the iTunes Store, Podcasts, Apple TV, the App Store, Apple Music and other digital media products.

• Joseph and Mayer Akhtarzad founded Los Angeles’ premier consumer technology retailer, Video and Audio Center (VAC), and the Just One Touch whole home technology showrooms. VAC is known throughout the industry their three Ds approach: discovery, desire, and demand, and for being the first in the nation to sell the newest equipment and technologies, as a consultant to leading consumer technology vendors, and as the A/V resource to the stars.

• Tim Baxter spent 35 years as a consumer technology executive with AT&T, Sony, and then Samsung in 2006. As president and CEO of Samsung Electronics North America, he oversaw Samsung’s rise to become the top seller of TVs, appliances, and smartphones. During his tenure, Baxter helped Samsung grow from $6 to $30 billion in annual sales and transformed the company from a Tier 2 to a global top five brand. He also served as a CTA director and as a member of CTIA’s executive board.

• Wanda Gass , a Texas Instruments engineer, played a crucial role in the development of the digital signal processor (DSP) from which all digital device functions stem and speech recognition technologies

BMW’s Zipse To Deliver Pre-Show CES Keynote

Oliver Zipse, Chairman of the Board of Management of BMW AG, will deliver a pre-show keynote address at CES 2023. Zipse will showcase how the future of mobility can merge the real and virtual worlds, and present BMW’s vision of the “ultimate digital driving machine” live in Las Vegas at Jan. 4, 2023.

BMW’s keynote address is part of the larger mobility story at CES 2023. The automotive sector will be bigger than ever, with nearly 300 exhibitors in a sold-out West Hall. The exhibits in West Hall will cover almost 25 percent more floor space than 2022, featuring the latest in self-driving tech, electric vehicles and personal mobility devices.

“We are thrilled to welcome BMW Group to the keynote stage,” said CTA President/CEO Gary Shapiro. “Under Oliver’s leadership, the company is expanding the definitions of mobility and reshaping the automotive industry, while embracing a more sustainable circular economy model for manufacturing.”

that led to today’s voice control interfaces. During her career, Gass contributed to advances in medical transition to better instrumentation and the multimedia industry’s conversion to digital technology. She also has broken barriers and paved the way for generations of women engineers.

• Mike May was a pioneer in the development of the Finial laser turntable, led Custom-Eyes Computer Systems that provided adaptive computer systems for the blind, designed some of the first accessible OCR systems for the blind, the Sendero accessible GPS and the GoodMaps indoor navigation technology for people who are blind or visually impaired. He underwent a rare stem-cell transplant that restored some vision after 43 years of total blindness, and still holds the downhill skiing speed record for a blind person of 65 MPH.

• Hank Shocklee has used his standing in the music world as founding member of pioneering hip-hop Rock and Roll Hall of Fame groups Public Enemy and the Bomb Squad music production team to influence the U.S. Congress to permanently shelve the controversial anti-piracy Protect IP Act (PIPA) and the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) legislation (2012), which threatened to censor creativity and stifle innovation. Shocklee has become a ubiquitous CES Ambassador and advocate for consumer technology rights.

Also honored at the dinner was Vox founder John Shalam and his wife Jane , honored for their many contributions to CTA and the industry with an award named for them. The first John and Jane Shalam Award for essential and innovative work in combating social isolation was given to Dr. Thomas Kamber, cofounder and executive director of Oats (Older Adults Technology Services), which helps seniors learn and use technology so they could live better in the digital age. After a cake was brought to the stage, CTA president and CEO Gary Shapiro led the dinner audience in “Happy Birthday” for John Shalam, who will turn 89 on December 10.

“Massage chairs may become a household necessity!”

In the postwar era, the three sacred treasures of the American home (television, refrigerator, and washing machine) were once a symbol of affluence, just as they were in Japan, and a coveted commodity in the average American home.

Today, they are common in every home and have become indispensable household items. It has been 40 years since U.S. Jaclean. Inc. introduced the massage chair to the U.S., but in Japan, massage chairs had been sold as health equipment in the electronics department long before that.

In the U.S., we started by importing massage chairs from Japan and introducing them at events. At first, many people looked at us strangely, and some even teasingly tried them out. However, as we continued our demonstrations, people began to appreciate the quality of the product. However, massage chairs were not well known as a household product, and when it came time to buy one, people were reluctant, making business difficult. For the first few years, it was good enough to sell one or two chairs at exhibitions, and the days of unprofitability continued.

Through repeated demonstrations at trade shows, the number of buyers began to increase. Our massage chairs were originally invented in Japan and we imported them from there. Eventually, to avoid Japan’s relatively high labor costs, production was shifted to Taiwan and China.

Massage chairs are now recognized in American society as a health de-

vice that incorporates concepts from both Western science and technology and traditional Eastern medicine. With time, new technologies have been added, and models have been created that incorporate customer feedback and the more detailed concepts of Shiatsu practitioners.

As we continued to sell massage chairs, we conducted extensive research to determine what kind of touch would have a positive effect on the human body, and we arrived at our current model.

There are many massage chairs available in the U.S. today, but we recommend that you choose a massage chair that is based on the concepts of massage experts. Daiwa massage chairs have led the massage chair industry by incorporating the concept of improving health through Shiatsu therapy and the latest technologies in health equipment.

There are two main types of massage chairs: S- type and L-type. The human back curves lightly in the shape of the letter S. The type that massages according to the curve of the back is called the S type. On the other hand, the L type massages from the back to the buttocks.

The S type has a stretch function that can stretch the entire body in addition to the back massage, while the L type has a stretch function that cannot be incorporated due to its structure. The Daiwa Supreme Hybrid incorporates the functions of both the S and L types by placing these rollers in two separate locations on the back and buttocks. We have introduced it as a hybrid model that is both an L type with a strong

stretching ability. Although the U.S. is now a society of longevity, it is still considered a stress ful society. Interest in health has been growing year by year, and stores selling general merchandise are now filled with a wide variety of health goods.

Massage chairs are gaining recognition in the U.S. and evolving with the times. In the United States, with its forward-thinking spirit, massage chairs will one day become an indispensable product in American society, ahead of their Asian counterparts.

Canon Offers New Hybrid Meeting, Collaboration Solution

BOOTH 16359 Canon’s AMLOS, an acronym of “Activate My Line Of Sight,” is a hybrid meeting and collaboration solution. With only one camera, it can create multiple video streams that present many different views of a meeting—the entire room, the presenter, a whiteboard—or it can zoom in on a specific zone of interest, like a prototype, for example. Which is obviously a great way to open up the room to remote collaborators. But it doesn’t shout “Jedi Master” until you discover that it operates using gesture recognition technology. So, one person makes a gesture and everyone in the room receives a Teams invitation on their mobile device or laptop, and then this can be rapidly extended to remote colleagues. These colleagues will join the meeting through the AMLOS browser user interface, which displays multiple video screens that can change the view to suit the way they wish to engage with the conversation. The speed at which a spontaneous chat can take place is fast enough to give remote colleagues a real sense of being considered and included in that moment. And once they are within AMLOS, whoever is in front of the camera can keep them on top of everything that is happening in the room just with the movement of their hand. Canon’s AMLOS is a CES 2023 Innovation Awards Best of Innovation selection in the Software & Mobile Apps category.

BOOTH W319 WEST HALL Valens Semiconductor has been named a CES Innovation Awards Honoree in three categories: Embedded Technologies, Vehicle Tech & Advanced Mobility, and In-Vehicle Entertainment & Safety. The VA7000 chipset family offers the automotive industry unprecedented bandwidth, distance, and resilience to Electromagnetic interference (EMI), empowering Advanced Driver-assistance Systems (ADAS) and autonomous applications.

Honored in In-Vehicle Entertainment & Safety, Valens Semiconductor’s VA6000 chipset family member, VA600R, brings life-saving rear-view visibility to the trucking industry. It offers error-free links, for distances of up to 40 meters/~130 feet, providing immunity to EMI, over the existing wiring (jumper cable) of tractor-trailers and as such is applicable for new trucks and for the aftermarket.

In Vehicle Tech & Advanced Mobility the VA7000 chipset family was recognized for being the first in the industry to release an A-PHY compliant high-speed long-reach Serializer/Deserializer (SerDes) solution for in-vehicle connectivity.

Samsung held the top spot with a 21.2% share, Apple came in second with a 17.2% share, while Xiaomi came in third with a 13.4% share. vivo and OPPO ended the quarter tied for the fourth position, each with 8.6% share. Except for Apple, all the top vendors suffered year-on-year declines. However, while Samsung and Xiaomi registered single-digit declines, vivo and OPPO continued to suffer high double-digit decreases.

From January to June 2022, the TV market recorded a 6 percent decrease in total sales to 31 billion US dollars, compared to the same period of the previous year. Almost all display sizes experienced this decline. Only the very large display sizes continue to show an upward trend, with sales of TVs with screen sizes over 75 inches increasing by 21 percent compared with the first half of 2021.

GLOBAL TV BRANDS

Certain niche products were also able to close the first half of 2022 on a positive note, such as devices with GPU synchronization for a better gaming experience (plus 18 percent growth), or with improved sound systems like DolbyAtmos/DTS:X (plus 54 percent). The new mini-LED screens launched last year remain a niche product with a growing, but still small, sales share of 4.8 percent.

This downturn in product demand has already led to falling prices in some cases – despite inflation and increased expenses within the supply chain. By way of illustration, the average cost of a TV was around 566 US dollars in June 2021 but dropped to 502 US dollars by June 2022. This is particularly visible in mid-range segments that have not seen any significant innovation upgrades or addition of premium features. In June 2022, for example, the price for a 55-inch LCD screen was 11 percent lower than in June 2021. One reason for this is that retailers are increasingly reacting to falling demand by reducing prices: in January to June this year, the proportion of TVs sold at a discount of 10 percent or more stood at 27 percent. In the same period of 2021, it was only 14 percent - although the European Football Championship was taking place at that time, which would have boosted demand. (Source by GfK)

Gerresheimer, Merck KGaA Transform Primary Packaging into Digital Twins

BOOTH 9217 Merck KGaA of Darmstadt, Germany, a leading science and technology company, and Deusseldorf-based Gerresheimer AG, a leading provider of healthcare solutions and drug delivery systems for pharma, biotech and cosmetics, have jointly developed a digital twin solution to further ensure traceability and trust in crucial steps along the pharmaceutical supply chain. The proof of concept (PoC) aims to transform the pharma supply chain by creating digital twins for primary packaging. Through a single interconnected network, participants will benefit from full traceability and digital trust, resulting in cost savings, improved quality and even new business models, thanks to process automation. Merck KGaA is represented at

CES 2023 by EMD Electronics, its North American Electronics business.

With the jointly developed solution, Gerresheimer’s physical primary packaging is provided with a trusted “key,” enabling access to its digital twin. Primary packaging, such as syringes or vials, “travel” through the whole supply chain, from production to the point of care, connecting and collecting information that will be linked to their unique ID. They become the key to unlocking data coming from numerous digital ecosystems, enabling more efficient collaboration among various organizations in the supply network. The new solution implemented on Gerresheimer products uses blockchain-based platform and multi-patented authentication technologies developed by Merck KGaA to anchor physical objects securely in the digital world.

The joint PoC of Merck KGaA and Gerresheimer comprises physical syringes with a secure unique ID, a smartphone application, and access to the digital platform of Merck KGaA, in order to unlock the digital twin features.

Sedimentum Showcases Smart Home Emergency Detector

BOOTH 61433

Sedimentum AG, a pioneering and awardwinning start-up founded in 2019 and based in Switzerland, is showcasing its contactless emergency detector device at CES 2023. The emergency detector empowers seniors to live as long as possible in their own homes and provides peace of mind for their relatives.

The solution, called “SAFE-living,” is an intelligent emergency detection service that will increase safety and autonomy in households. Until today, no reliable

and intelligent technical solution that provides “real” and smart emergency detection at home, and at the same time serve the needs of the entire family, exists.

To this point, recognizing a fall or other emergencies in a contactless and reliable manner has been a highly challenging undertaking. The differentiation between a fall and, say, a fitness exercise on the floor, is clear to humans; less so for classic technological solutions.

The answer to the problem is Sedimentum’s self-de-

veloped AI technology, which can, for example, differentiate a fitness exercise from an actual emergency. The emergency detectors from Sedimentum are installed on the ceiling and work contactless and autonomously. No battery charger is required and users do not need to carry or wear any devices (no wearables).

Irides Issues Advanced Android App for Visual Navigation

61701

PARK Irides LLC, an Ohio startup, assists companies and consumers to solve mobile transportation and navigation issues in the U.S. At CES 2023 the company is announcing its Android app 2.0 for automated travel camera access throughout the U.S. With over 42,000 addressable cameras available, this

unique new service enables users to plan where they are going in real-time faster and safer than current services, according to the company. It is a completely automated national database supporting GPS and live public cameras. Travel from state to state seamlessly, automatically accessing transportation cameras during a trip. No need for multiple DOT apps or saving URLs to help lo-

cate the user’s real time camera(s) en route.

Excellent SaS to use by individual day-to-day travelers, B2B/B2C and public sector (police/fire/EMT) as a standalone mobile app with Android/iOS or integrated with existing transportation navigation systems in smart cars, logistic operations systems and AI platforms. Irides iOS version 1.0 will be announced shortly.

Imagry Targets AD Market With ‘Mapless’ Driving Software

BOOTH 62201 At CES 2023 Imagry, an Israeli startup established in 2015, is featuring its unique “mapless” driving software for Level 3-4 autonomous vehicles. Autonomous driving (“AD”) in public transportation is projected to decrease the number of traffic accidents, reduce the use of fossil fuels, lower air pollution, and improve social equality. Furthermore, AD will encourage travelers to use public transportation.

Imagry’s bio-inspired technology collects and processes peripheral information from cameras installed on the vehicle. This data is sent to a special computer in the vehicle whose purpose is to perform, in real time, the

actions that will allow the vehicle to drive autonomously (similar to a human driver). Imagry’s unique locationindependent technology enables the rapid deployment of autonomous vehicles on unknown roads for journeys of all lengths. It uses low-cost sensors and eliminates the need for a continuous satellite connection or multiple investments for the digital mapping of roads and cities.

Imagry currently operates autonomous vehicles on public roads in California, Arizona, Haifa and Frankfurt. It recently won two different bids to operate autonomous public vehicles (shuttles and buses, respectively) on Israel’s roads.

CES Unveiled

and that’s why we’ve identified with them,” Shapiro explained. “You’ll hear the keynoters speaking about them, you’ll see we have Innovations Awards based on them,” as well as in conference sessions and in dedicated areas of the show floor. Shapiro noted that CTA is partnering with the World Academy of Arts and Sciences (WAAS) “to tell the story about how some of the world’s challenges are being met through innovation and technology.”

SMALLER SIZE, WIDER SCOPE

CES 2023 will not only embrace a more impactful theme of helping the world address its biggest challenges, it will also be a bit smaller. Currently, there are 2,200 exhibitors signed up, half the number of the last pre-pandemic show, CES 2020. According to Shapiro, the discrepancy is largely the loss of smaller Chinese companies impacted by both Covid restrictions as well as ongoing geopolitical issues. Shapiro did note that there is usually a December exhibitor signup boost “so we really don’t know where we’ll end up.” CTA expects more than 100,000 attendees, still well shy of the 175,000 who came to CES in 2020.

Eureka Park already has more than 1,000 exhibitors and “it could go a tremendous amount higher than that,” Shapiro predicted. Mixed amongst the start-ups at Eureka Park will be 20 country exhibit areas, including Ukraine Tech.

While South Hall will once again remain vacant, the new West Hall is sold out, filled with 300 largely

automotive exhibitors, including actual vehicle manufacturers as well as their supply chain and other partners, along with flying and marine vehicle technology, including amphibious land/sea vehicles.

With fewer booths, CTA has been able to widen aisles and more widely space booths and seating areas to lessen crowding and lower potential interpersonal health risks.

SHOW FLOOR TECH

CES will start as usual with two media days on January 3 and 4. Among the specific tech attendees will see will be technologies encompassing Web3, or Web 3.0, including a dedicated Central Hall space. Web3 includes new and emerging concepts such as blockchain, digital assets and metaverse, and many aspects of CES will deal with how Web3 will impact the way businesses interact with vendors, employees, and customers.

Other specific new and emerging tech categories will include the latest innovations in health and wellness including sleep tech, mental health technology, telehealth, remote patient monitoring, over-thecounter hearing aids, and digital therapeutics, “new and improved ways that folks can really embrace and manage their chronic conditions at home,” explained CTA Director of Research Lesley Rahrbaugh, “and not necessarily always in a caretaking environment or office.”

Other categories that will be highlighted at CES 2023 will be “ingredient” technologies such as 5G, the cloud, AI, sensors, cyber security, sustainability, and robotics, along with AR/VR, gaming and esports, fintech, autonomous vehicles in West Hall, and Food Tech at the Venetian.

Varying aspects of the metaverse will be represented on the show floor. Most of the real-world metaverse products will focus on the enterprise side, such as for corporate and HR training. But expect to see future metaverse tech being demoed that will enable users “to feel the environment around you, to hear the environment around you, to smell the environment around you,” according to Rohrbaugh.

Off the show floor, on January 7, there will be an Indy car auto race at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway—except the “drivers” will be teams of university students competing against one another racing autonomous Indy cars traveling at speeds in excess of 190 MPH.

Really off the show floor, if you can’t make it to CES, all the keynotes will be live streamed, as will a wider selection of conference sessions. Access to these recordings will double from 30 to 60 days after the show. Exhibitors will also have a larger tool kit to enable virtual attendees to browse booths, get information, and make contact.

HOLIDAY SHOPPING PREVIEW

Before CES 2023, there’s still the holiday shopping season that will launch with Black Friday, the holiday weekend, and through Cyber Monday. Rohrbaugh presented the findings of CTA surveys about what products and technologies shoppers will be shopping for and expecting to receive.

Rohrbaugh noted that “enthusiasm for purchasing tech is hitting an all-time high,” and that CTA was expecting nearly eight in 10 holiday shoppers, 86 percent of Thanksgiving weekend shoppers, were planning to purchase some sort of tech item on which they would spend an average of $560. Rohrbaugh says 23 percent more consumers plan to shop on Black Friday than last year, 20 percent more on Cyber Monday. How consumers will shop and pay is changing as well; 47 percent are going to shop online before going to stores, and 20 percent will pay using digital systems such as Apple Pay.

First on the planning to purchase list was video streaming services. While not exactly something that can be gift-wrapped in a box, but a video streaming gift subscription was something almost half of U.S. adults this year are planning to buy. Additionally, more than a third of U.S. adults are planning to purchase a content related gift within the general gaming or audio categories, including Spotify or Pandora subscriptions.

Smart home and especially security devices are also high on consumer buying lists, as well as the usual smartphones. This year, however, about 30 percent of smartphone buyers will look at foldable models. Adults want gifts with screens—smartphones, TVs, laptop PCs—but are actually planning to buy a variety of accessories, headphones, earbud, and other more peripheral devices.
