Route any combination of SD, HD and Ultra HD at the same time!

Blackmagic Videohub 12G-SDI video routers let you connect all your equipment without creating a complex cable mess!

Blackmagic Videohub routers support 12G-SDI so they allow you to connect and route any combination of SD, HD and Ultra HD on the same router at the same time. Plus they have zero latency so are perfect for live production and broadcast!

Elegantly Designed Front Panel

The built in front control panel lets you route video, so you get the perfect solution for live production racks that don’t have the space for extra hardware panels. The front panel features a spin knob for browsing, direct entry buttons for speed and an LCD for displaying labels. As the panel is built into the router, you can also see live video on the LCD! The LCD also has menus so you can change router settings.

Change Router Crosspoints Visually!

With a built in LCD, Blackmagic Videohub 12G can show you live video of all your router inputs! This means you can see all router inputs as live video before you change a route. There are also labels displayed below the live video to make it easy to identify the input you are viewing. What this means is you can scroll up and down the router sources in alphabetical order and see each input as live video.

Advanced 12G-SDI for SD, HD and Ultra HD Routing

Blackmagic Videohub 12G features advanced 12G-SDI connections which are multi rate so they support any SD, HD and Ultra HD video format up to 2160p60. Plus Blackmagic Videohub 12G supports routing any video standard on the same router at the same time. 12G-SDI gives you high frame rate Ultra HD via a single BNC connection that also plugs into all of your regular HD equipment!

Features Full SDI Re-Clocking

Videohub includes built in SDI re-clocking on every 12G-SDI input. SDI re-clocking regenerates the video signal for maximum video quality. This is extremely important because longer video cables degrade the signal. With SDI re-clocking all of the SDI devices in your studio receive a regenerated signal with improved jitter performance. That means longer cable lengths, and no drop outs in your video.

NEWSROOMS IN THE CLOUD

AWS Expands NAB Show Presence

Show attendees are taking an up-close look at what the cloud and Gen AI can do at the show

If there remains any doubt that the cloud and artificial intelligence are transforming the workflows that drive the Media & Entertainment (M&E) industry, Amazon Web Services (AWS) is actively removing them at the 2024 NAB Show.

Television broadcasters — especially news-producing stations and networks — are getting a firsthand look at how the AWS cloud offers an alternative to brick-andmortar newsrooms and production control rooms.

“This is a year of news, especially in the U.S. with the elections,” said Tracy Geist, global head of Industry Marketing for Media & Entertainment, Games and Sports at AWS. “We are really focusing on the newsroom in the cloud, from production all the way through distribution and consumption.”

We are really focusing on the newsroom in the cloud, from production all the way through distribution and consumption.”
TRACY GEIST

In the West Hall lobby of the Las Vegas Convention Center (LVCC) and a glass-enclosed production control room in the AWS booth (W1701) attendees can see firsthand how AWS in partnership with NVIDIA are powering the NAB Show LIVE news desk — a traditional rundown-oriented news presentation — on the cloud.

In the mornings, production

control shifts to the Broadcast Beat Studios in Florida to demonstrate how the cloud can be used to produce rundown-centric newscasts from a remote location.

A separate booth demo builds on the news focus with the cloud as the centerpiece of story-centric news workflows. Rather than simply producing the content for a newscast rundown, story-centric workflows focus on collaborative story production for distribution via social media, mobile, websites and linear newscasts.

The story-centric workflow at the AWS booth features SaaS tools running on the company’s cloud, including a story-centric newsroom solution from Dina, a production asset management system from Mimir and an HTML5-based graphics solution from Viz Flowics.

creative people can be freed up to do more of the great things they do best.”

Golfer Alastair Soutar, Director, Batcam, tees off in the AWS Generative AI Golf Experience

Some 80 AWS partners are participating in the company’s focus on newsrooms and the other five targeted M&E solutions in the booth, including broadcast, live production, content monetization, media supply chain and data science and analytics. Many are highlighting how generative AI fits into the overall media equation, said Geist.

“Tech for tech’s sake is not as interesting as tech that actually is driving real value,” said Julie Souza, global leader, Strategic Business Development, Sports at AWS. “Gen AI is driving operational efficiencies so that

The booth’s Builder Zone not only is giving visitors a peak behind the demos to see the specific AWS services and components powering them but also the chance to have some fun at the AWS Generative AI Playground where they are getting hands-on experience building Gen AI apps with Amazon Bedrock, Amazon Q and PartyRock.

BEYOND THE BOOTH

The 2024 edition of the NAB Show is the biggest to date for AWS, and the company is making its presence felt beyond its booth, said Geist.

Near the booth, NAB and the company have put together the AWS Partner Village and Learning Lounge (W1343) where about a dozen companies are demonstrating their solutions in standalone pods. The site also offers an area for people to network and a theater where partner companies, their customers, thought leaders and AWS offer daily presentations on different implementations. The Learning Lounge focuses on the technical aspects of the cloud, offering an environment conducive to education.

AWS Partners participating in the village and lounge include: Amagi, Anypoint Media, Arc XP, Ateliere, Bedrock Streaming, CSG, Datazoom, EPAM, Global-

In the LVCC South Upper Hall (SU4109), the AWS Generative AI Golf Experience gives attendees a chance to tee off from many iconic golf courses. AWS is working with Full Swing, the official simulator partner of the PGA TOUR, to power the company’s golf simulator experience.

After taking their swing, attendees can design their dream golf holes with AWS generative AI tools and walk away with customized golf posters.

Those looking to level up their careers in the M&E industry during the #GALSINGEAR CONNECT half-day program, Tuesday, April 16, also have an opportunity to hear from a leader at AWS, which is sponsoring the event.

Samira Bakhtiar, general manager of Media & Entertainment, Games and Sports at AWS, is delivering the program keynote.

The expanded presence of AWS at NAB Show is no accident, said Geist. “If we look back as we were going into last year, we were talking about how we were going to double down on M&E as a company and as a business,” she said. “That’s exactly what we have done for 2024 and exactly what people are seeing throughout the convention center with our presence in so many places.” l

AWS At NAB Show

Along with the company’s participation in the Excellence in Sustainability Awards, which happened on Sunday, and today’s session “How Generative AI Is Changing the Game,” on the Main Stage at 11:30 a.m., AWS has a busy lineup at NAB Show.

HIGH-END VIDEO

IMAX and the Marvelous Magic of Disney Come to NAB Show

Filmmakers use the IMAX canvas to deliver movies in different ways to different audiences

It’s hard to believe filmmakers can shoot their movies optimized for IMAX, the highest-end motion picture platform, while at the same time bring that content to the home entertainment system, or even a hand-held device. But Sunday morning’s session “From Lens to Living Room — The Marvelous Magic of IMAX and Disney” explained just how IMAX and Hollywood companies such as Marvel Studios and Disney have partnered to do just that.

“We work very closely with filmmakers, where we’re showing

them how to do things that best improve the way it looks and the way it sounds,” said Bruce Markoe, senior vice president/head of IMAX Post & Image Capture, IMAX Corp. “We do this on very special movies.”

Evan Jacobs, VP Finishing & Stereo at Marvel Studios, cautioned not to downplay the home entertainment environment too much, noting that it’s now hard to buy a TV that has less than 4K resolution. Aspect ratio can be treated in different ways by different filmmakers. “Some choose to deliver the IMAX version in 1:90 all the way to the end; others switch among different aspect ratios. The

canvas is there,” he said.

Markoe said that filmmakers come in very early in the process, “where they can look at previously shot movies to get an idea about how a movie shot this way works. The common misconception is that we take the same movie and put it in IMAX. But it really is a different version of the film.

“The way the process begins is that we bring the filmmaker in and take them through the options,” continued Markoe. “A lot of them have never worked with that box of crayons.

“If it’s of interest to them, then we look at things like the camera, what camera should they use, what

lens package should they use. How do they optimize that? The sound is another piece that is done.”

The genesis of finishing an IMAX film in several different ways came about as they were working very hard on the theatrical version — when it came to watching that same version at home, it was a very inconsistent.

“We have a streaming technology side of our business, to help streaming platforms optimize quality,” Vikram Arumilli, senior vice president and general manager, Streaming and Consumer Technology at IMAX, said. “And then our consumer technical side helps companies like Disney+ help deliver a higher quality experience.”

Optimizing for a giant IMAX screen as well as smaller screens can be done after a movie has been shot. A good example of this is remastering concert videos. One soon to be released in IMAX theaters is “Queen Rocks Montreal,” originally shot in 1981.

The way the process begins is that we bring the filmmaker in and take them through the options. A lot of them have never worked with that box of crayons.”
BRUCE MARKOE

“The original film was fully restored by the Queen people,” said Joe Rice, senior vice president of Product-Media, Devices & Globalization, Disney Entertainment and ESPN. “In addition to that, we did a lot of image enhancement to make it look good on the IMAX screen. And then the DSX audio was done specifically for IMAX sound systems.”

Markoe said filmmakers get excited about working with IMAX. l

What Successful Talk Shows Might Look Like Next Season and Beyond

Byron Allen, Portia Bruner, others share what’s working in syndication

Michael Depp, chief content officer and editor, NewsCheckMedia, TVNewsCheck, moderated Sunday’s NAB session “Building the Next Gen Talk Show” at the Encore. The panel began with a look at the future of shows hosted by big-name talent. Byron Allen, chairman, CEO and president, Allen Media Group and Entertainment Studios, noted how uncommon standout talent is, citing Oprah Winfrey and a star from the sports world.

“The Bulls still haven’t replaced Michael Jordan,” he said.

Allen said he’s not a big believer in the single-host format. “I’m not saying it’s not possible,”

he said, but it needs that megawatt talent to fly.

Keeping costs from getting sky-high is key to such a show working, the panelists said. “The secret is making it affordable for

ing out with family,’” she shared.

One theme of the panel was making a show pop on the various platforms available. Jenny Depper, senior vice president, E! News, spoke of the digital efforts for

We custom-create content for every single platform that [“The Kelly Clarkson Show”] exists on.”

the stations,” said Ira Bernstein, co-president, Debmar-Mercury, “and making it so they can make money.”

Portia Bruner, host of talk show “Portia,” which launched on WAGA Atlanta and airs on Fox Soul, said a lean staff sets the right tone for her program. “We hear guests say, ‘It felt like I was hang-

“The Kelly Clarkson Show” launching at the same time as the show. “We capture audiences where they are,” she said. “We custom-create content for every single platform that the show exists on.”

Lauren Blincoe, senior vice president, current programming, Telepictures, Warner Bros. Television, said digital clips are more than just promotion for the show, but can’t give too much away. “We have to be sensitive to our station partners,” said Blincoe, who works on “The Jennifer Hudson Show.” “You’re going to get a little bit, but you still have to watch the show to get all of it.”

Bruner said the key to “Portia” finding its legs outside Atlanta was focusing on issues that are universal. “Building a community, building a connection, and making sure people feel heard,” Bruner said of her game plan.

That segued into what a successful host brings to a show. Allen mentioned the importance of “being very naturally curious.” He spoke of interacting with Johnny Carson as a kid when his mother worked at NBC. Carson stressed letting the guest have their moments. “Pull back and make him shine,” Allen said Carson told him.

Depper cited the importance of relatability, noting how that’s been key to Travis and Jason Kelce finding success with their podcast.

Depp asked about how a daytime show’s tone may differ from another airing after dark. Depper said the 24/7 platforms that content pops up on can take the daypart out of the equation. “A clip that does well on Jimmy Fallon’s show, the next morning is all everyone’s talking about at the water cooler,” she said. “Tonally, it’s edgier at night, but it’s still relevant at 9 a.m. the next morning.”

The session detailed the risks involved with a station group backing a daytime show. Panelists said groups should still take some swings. Said Bernstein, “The groups that have taken chances and invested in programming, over time have done better.” l

The panel discussed a clip for Winfrey’s interview with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle that ran on TikTok. It saw Prince Harry say some shocking things, which worked well on that particular platform.

Verizon, AWS and the NHL Demo 5G-Enabled Cloud Broadcasting

Verizon Business, following a recent multi-faceted technology partnership renewal with the NHL, is using NAB Show to demo a new 5G-enabled cloud broadcasting system at booth W2042. The demo will include a simulcast of live feeds provided by the NHL.

Running on AWS Wavelength Zones, a mobile edge compute service that delivers ultra-low-latency applications for 5G devices, this system promises to reduce the speed from content capture on ice to broadcast from seconds to milliseconds, Verizon said at a Sunday press event.

Together with AWS, the NHL produced its first-ever live-to-air cloud broadcast of the Carolina Hurricanes vs. Washington Capitals game on March 22. The NHL broadcast the game through AWS Elemental MediaConnect, a transport service for live video, giving the league the scale to maximize centralized production crews in the league’s offices and production headquarters. Additionally, because of the rapid delivery that cloud efficiency can drive, the league can streamline content distribution to social media channels and new platform partners to create enhanced fan experiences.

“Live cloud production empowers the NHL to produce high-quality

content from virtually anywhere and at practically any scale, using the optimum combination of resources,” said Julie Souza, global head of Sports, AWS. “The speed of Verizon 5G unlocks new opportunities for the continued adoption and deployment of live cloud production across sports and beyond.”

Grant Nodine, NHL senior vice president, Technology, said the benefits of the system went beyond the obvious cost and sustainability benefits of remote productions. “This is all about super-serving our fans,” said Nodine. “Expediting content delivery from the cloud allows us to find innovative ways to create content and design experiences for the fan.”

Evertz Introduces Co-Pilots for DreamCatcher BRAVO Studio Platform

Evertz unveiled a host of products, including new AI-powered, data-driven co-pilots for Evertz’ DreamCatcher BRAVO Studio, the company’s all-in-one production platform.

The launch of the two new co-pilots Metadata and Highlight Factory, which automatically create clips, playlists and stories using AI, marked a notable addition

to the capabilities of the BRAVO Studio and highlighted the importance that artificial intelligence (AI) will be playing during the show in production technologies.

Mo Goyal, senior director of International Business Development and Live Media Production, also discussed a number of other tech trends and detailed a host of new solutions that will be on

display at the show.

Evertz’s

lays out a host of new products and enhancements to existing offerings that the company will be demoing during the show.

SPOTLIGHT

Those include: new features for its Software Defined Video Networking (SDVN) solution, which is helping the broadcast industry transition to or expand all-IP infrastructures using SMPTE ST 2110 and NMOS; a new media processing platform, the RFK-ITXE-HW-DUO; the addition to JPEG XS to its NEXX Processing and Routing Platform with the new NEXX-IO-JXS card; and advances in its satellite ground infrastructure solutions and other technologies.

The content creator is one of the most influential characters in today’s media landscape. As a creator, enhancing your professional skills to offer your clients the best results possible is key in gaining and maintaining top brands in your portfolio.”
JOSEPH “PHOTOJOSEPH” LINASCHKE | CONTENT CREATOR, PHOTOJOSEPH STUDIOS

During the presentation, Goyal noted that Evertz has been deeply involved in the industry’s migration from hardware to software and to cloud-based solutions in its work for Discovery and other companies. EXECUTIVE Q&A

Wolfgang Huber PR Manager Lawo

Artificial intelligence seems to be the buzzword lately. What technology trends will you be following most closely at NAB Show this year?

“Yes, artificial intelligence. We prioritize the refinement of our platform approach, exemplified by our HOME all-in-one solution, that caters to diverse needs, bolstered by our suite of HOME Apps. The ability to run different processing tasks on the same servers and to unlock ever more hardware and software features via a customercentric financial model based on credits allows us to easily shift processing capability from one production or editing suite to another, all at the press of a button. This hardware- and function-agnostic approach reduces planning times and capital expenditure and may no doubt benefit from AI-based tools and routines.”

Lawo is a long-time exhibitor at NAB Show. What brings the company back to this event each year?

Lawo considers NAB Show a pivotal event for our industry, as it is the place where groundbreaking announcements are made. Literally everybody is at NAB Show, which makes it easy to discuss new ideas, ongoing projects and feature requests that often benefit the industry at large. We furthermore appreciate the fact that we can present Lawo’s approach to broadcasters, but also AV companies, sports venues, public institutions and corporations that are looking for infrastructure and workflow ideas for their own media projects.

Broadcasting and the cloud, how do we leverage where the world is going, to bring our legacy tech into the way people consume content?”

Austrian private station Antenne Voralberg expanded its streaming options with the help of Betty, an AI-voiced DJ powered by Radio.Cloud.

Radio AI Air Talent Is Proliferating

But the impact of AI in radio goes well beyond audio content

“A.I. Liam Jones” is the overnight talent on classic rock WZOC(FM), serving South Bend, Ind. His colleague “A.I. Alley” has the shift on CHR station WQLQ(FM) up the road in Benton Harbor, Mich. AI-based air talent like these is finding their way onto more stations — for now, usually overnight.

Liam’s and Alley’s website bios identify them as AI DJs. “Have

fun with it, embrace it,” said Bill Gamble, general manager of MidWest Family. “Let the audience in on the joke. Let them listen for the mistakes.”

In an era when few stations employ people overnight, AI — in this case, Futuri’s AudioAI — can provide entertainment as well as update a weather forecast. “But in the end,” Gamble said, “it’s a sauce to the steak. It’s not the steak.” WRBF(FM) “104.9 The Rebel” near Atlanta deployed a jock called A.I. Gunner overnight.

Howard Toole, majority partner of owner Rome Radio Partners, has also experimented with a tool from ReelWorld’s Production Vault imaging service that can create promos featuring listener comments generated by AI.

In Greenville, S.C., AI allowed HIS Radio to expand local content on a regional network of stations. It cloned the voices of its Greenville-based air talent, and the clones do three hourly breaks on each station, using locally relevant information.

German broadcaster Antenne Deutschland launched an online station that uses the Radio.Cloud platform to write a schedule, program breaks and create the voice tracks. The company subsequently put the format on a local DAB+ channel. Now Managing Director Mirko Drenger says the AI host is helping out on sister stations when hosts are ill or on vacation.

While on-air applications get headlines, broadcasters are deploying AI across their workflows.

NRG Media, with 36 stations in the Midwest, uses AI to create copy, prep shows, develop prospect lists and compose marketing emails. Executives check memos with Grammarly, create process training guides with Scribe, and generate conversation prompts for their salespeople using ChatGPT.

More recently the cluster began using an attribution tool that shows how radio mentions affect search habits and digital advertising. And Meder said Cox has a taskforce to explore new tools before deploying them. “It’s critical with AI or any new tool [to use it] in a strategic, safe and productive way.”

Beasley Media Group uses AI to generate video for advertisers; it also has experimented with AI tools from Futuri, Benztown and ENCO to create spec spots and production. Beasley is still developing policies for AI, but CEO Caroline Beasley said the technology will personalize content, automate repetitive tasks, improve sales presentations and assist in identifying new revenue streams.

Given the many ways it can be used, Fred Jacobs, president of Jacobs Media, said some companies will likely avoid AI until its cultural, technical and legal issues are sorted out. “That may prove to be a mistake if they don’t make it a point to use this moment as an opportunity to learn and test drive the technology,” he said.

“Radio is going to have to innovate to remain competitive, but it’s essential broadcasters don’t just jump into the fray without a better understanding of what they’re getting themselves into. And I can’t stress this enough. Radio broadcasters will need to train staff on how to use it.”

FAST Talk: A Step Toward Increasing Revenue and Viewer Engagement

Free, ad-supported television brings more opportunities for advertisers and content providers

The age of streaming the opportunity for different viewing habits for many. Entire seasons could be “binged” whenever you had the time to spare and didn’t mind being tethered to the couch for eight or more episodes. It seemed that the days of channel surfing to find something to watch was replaced by scrolling through

various listings of movies and TV shows. It also meant that it was hard to just catch a few minutes of TV as it required a greater commitment.

The arrival of FAST — free, ad-supported television — which is essentially a mix between the worlds of cable TV and subscription-based streaming — has slowly become a billion-dollar industry that offers yet another way to consume TV.

“[FAST] is essentially offering what you watch when you don’t know what you want to watch,” said Adam Wiener, founder of streaming and digital media consultancy firm Continuous Media.

“This isn’t appointment viewing, but it is what you have on when you are doing other things,” he said. Wiener is moderating today’s Streaming Summit session “The Business of FAST: Ad

3 KEY TAKEAWAYS

1 A lot of what is on FAST is library content rather than new high-profile content.

2 FAST services increasingly have FAST channels that bridge the gap between linear cable and streaming.

3 FAST could be a way for the larger paid platforms to funnel viewers to those paid services.

Dollars, Viewer Measurement and Content Saturation.”

The session will explore how FAST services have become important to SVOD players searching

for new distribution platforms and revenue streams and an opportunity to engage audiences on alternative platforms with different viewership behaviors.

It would be safe to say that these are still the early days for FAST, but the industry can expect changes to come quickly. These trends will be the focus of tomorrow’s CORE Education Collection

All of these services are likely to continue to have similarity to cable TV, especially to its early days. “One difference is that FAST doesn’t get carriage fees, but the user experience is fairly similar and will likely continue to be similar,” Wolk added.

FAST may seem a lot like cable TV, but it likely won’t replace cable. In fact, as Wolk noted,

It would be safe to say that these are still the early days for FAST, but the industry can expect changes to come quickly.

session “The Future of FAST: Lessons Learned and What’s Next.” The session will be moderated by Alan Wolk, co-founder and lead analyst at TVREV.

“First, it is important to note that there are three kinds of FAST,” said Wolk, who coined the term to distinguish the evolving services from traditional subscription-based services such as Hulu.

“We see the ones that are associated with device manufacturers, and those are front and center to allow those companies to sell advertisements and offer a new revenue stream. Then there are the services like Pluto TV and Tubi, which are associated with larger media companies,” he said. “Finally, we have the smaller independent services, like Crackle, that cater to a specific audience.”

certainly around 60 percent of consumers still have streaming and cable. Thus, the cord-cutting has been only cut so far. At the same time, however, consumers are finding that they are at the end of the tether on what they’re willing to pay.

For traditional streaming, that has resulted in increased churn. That will present greater opportunities for FAST, and in turn more opportunities for advertisers and content providers alike.

“Where FAST is different from cable is that the ad breaks are smaller than what you had on traditional TV, but at the same time the ads are better targeted. That may not always be the reality, but we’re already seeing it getting a lot better,” said Wolk.

It is also likely that the industry

can expect some consolidation, even as there may be an increase in the number of FAST channels, as the number of services that can survive and carve out a niche could see a decline.

“We’re facing too many channels, and it has become overwhelming. As a result, the platforms are becoming more selective in what they are going to show,” said Weiner. “More importantly, the newer channels will need to show they will have an audience.”

That might sound familiar, and it should. The result could be the same as well.

“We’ve seen the larger platforms buying up these FAST services,” said Weiner, “which essentially can be used to funnel viewers to the paid subscription areas.”

Streamers Make a Play for Live Sports Content

Linear TV still has a strong command over the live TV market due to sports contracts

NEXT TV

Viewing habits have shifted with changes in the media landscape. Technology makes it possible to view content anytime, anywhere, on any device and across a range of channel offerings. And live programming is one of the content types that can now be found on a variety of services.

In the last year, several prominent streaming services have struck deals with corporate behemoths including the National Football League (NFL) and World

Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) to share live linear television content with the likes of Amazon Prime Video, Netflix and Peacock.

The NFL’s first annual Black Friday football game, pitting the Miami Dolphins against the New York Jets last Nov. 24 — the Friday after Thanksgiving — streamed exclusively on Prime Video. The contest was part of an 11-year deal that the NFL and Amazon struck in 2021, which gave the digital titan sole rights to “Thursday Night Football” for $1 billion per year.

According to Nielsen, the

streamer averaged 11.86 million viewers per game during the 2023 season, a 24-percent increase over the previous season. Those numbers earned Prime Video the right to stream its first-ever NFL playoff game later this year.

“Amazon has dramatically grown awareness and usage of its Prime [Video] service by hosting ‘Thursday Night Football’ games,” said Craig Moffett, senior managing director at MoffettNathanson Research.

Amazon isn’t the only streamer investing in live sports to attract more subscribers. In 2023, NBCU-

niversal purchased the inaugural exclusive streaming rights to an NFL playoff game, which the Comcast-owned company placed on Peacock. The Jan. 13 Kansas City Chiefs-Miami Dolphins AFC Wild Card game delivered an average audience of 23 million viewers, according to NBCUniversal.

“It’s not just the streamers who are using sports to drive subscribership; it’s also the sports leagues,” Moffett said.

“But look at the largest sports-licensing deals,” said Dan Rayburn, an expert on streaming media and chairman of the NAB Show Streaming Summit.

“Where are they? Pay TV. In the last month, ESPN, Fox Sports and NBC Sports all put out stats for their 2023 seasons of NFL and college football, and it was some of the highest-rated viewership on pay TV ever for sports.”

Though linear still has a strong command over the live TV market due to sports contracts, that isn’t

stopping streamers from reaching out to linear staple entertainment like comedy specials, entertainment awards shows and WWE’s flagship weekly live pro-wrestling show “Monday Night Raw.” In January, Netflix struck a deal with WWE to stream the live show exclusively. When the show moves to Netflix next January, it will mark the first time in its more than 30 years that “Raw” has not aired new episodes on a linear television network.

But despite streamers’ interest in live sports, major sports leagues like the NFL, NBA and the MLB aren’t backing away from over-the air broadcasters. Conversely, they are doubling down on traditional media companies, the TV format that generates steady crowds and sustained ratings. Local TV stations have proven to be the most cost-effective way to reach the maximum number of fans, who may not want to pay for various streaming subscriptions in order to watch all the games they want to view.

“The most important genres for linear television — sports and live news — are on broadcast TV,” Scripps Sports President Brian Lawlor told the United States House of Representatives Committee during a January 2024 hearing. “Americans appreciate being able to get this programming on their local stations, especially those offered for free over the air. No platform has been able to duplicate broadcasters’ ability to bring local news and sports to the local viewer

and with little or no cost.”

In February, in an effort to compete with television networks and local TV stations, Fox Corp., Warner Bros. Discovery and Disney announced that they are planning to launch a joint streaming venture that will make their collective sports programming available under one broadband roof. Meaning content from Fox Sports, ESPN and TNT would be available to viewers on a standalone app. The service is slated to launch in fall 2024. Subscribers would have access to linear sports networks including ABC, ACC Network, ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU, ESPN+, SEC Network, ESPNews, Fox, FS1, FS2, BTN, TNT, TBS, and truTV. The cost of the service has yet to be announced.

As for the future of corporate consolidation, Rayburn

said that smaller companies like Starz might be folded into larger ones, but major mergers like the combination of WarnerMedia and Discovery Inc. into Warner Bros. Discovery are unlikely.

Whether more consolidation happens or not, Moffett said, there will be fewer OTT platforms.

“Disney, Peacock, Warner Bros. Discovery, Apple, Amazon and Paramount Plus are all still vying for ownership of the customer,” Moffett said. “It’s fairly obvious that not all of those [platforms] are going to win. Some of them will have to eventually see their brands be subjugated to someone else’s flagship brand, but nobody’s really ready to concede that yet.”

But look at the largest sportslicensing deals. Where are they? Pay TV.”
DAN RAYBURN

One thing that is for sure is straight-to-streamer releases, live or not, have settled in for the long run. IMAX has responded to that market need with streaming optimization and quality monitoring software called StreamAware, which ensures content quality viewing, and StreamSmart, which preserves video quality while further reducing file sizes on top of existing optimization methods.

These technologies will help streaming services deliver premium quality content for less money, said Vikram Arumilli, IMAX senior vice president and general manager, Streaming and Consumer Technology.

To ultimately be successful Arumilli said streaming has got to make money. “First, you have got to figure out how to build a sustainable business model. That’s what we allow [with these technologies]. They can deliver content in the highest quality but do so in a way that reduces bandwidth costs.” l

Broadcast Industry Continues Drive to Secure AM Radio in New Cars

Preserving AM is one of NAB’s top objectives

As radio broadcasters gather at NAB Show to network and explore new technology and strategies to benefit their stations, automakers are still making noise about AM radio’s long-term viability in electric cars due to

interference issues. But the NAB and radio broadcasters are keeping the pressure on to include the broadcast service.

AM advocates say that removing AM from new vehicles would be a huge detriment to public safety, yet BMW, Mazda, Tesla, Rivian, Volkswagen and Volvo have already removed or are still

considering removing AM radios from electric vehicle models.

Ford said it would dump AM radio reception in gas and electric automobiles starting in 2024, but the automaker later reversed course.

There is a massive effort in Washington to keep AM in all new vehicles, being spearhead -

ed by the NAB. Much of the effort hinges on getting the AM Radio for Every Vehicle Act passed, which would direct the Department of Transportation to issue a rule requiring that AM broadcast stations be accessible in all passenger motor vehicles manufactured in, imported into or shipped within the United States.

The bill, introduced in May of 2023, has strong bipartisan support, according to the NAB. The bill’s sponsor in the house, Rep. Josh Gottheimer (D-N.J.) is ramping up the pressure on auto manufacturers to keep AM radio in their new product lines.

At a press conference earlier this year in front of a Tesla dealership in his home state,

AM RADIO EFFORTS

Rep. Gottheimer announced new action to protect AM radio in electric vehicles. In his latest effort, he is calling on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to adopt a requirement for car makers who exclude AM radio to paste a safety warning in the window on any new car sold stating: “Warning: No AM Radio. Vehicle Unsafe in Certain Emergencies.”

NAB President/CEO Curtis LeGeyt in an interview with Radio World said the threat facing AM radio is the association’s top priority.

“Over the last year, I have just been absolutely overwhelmed by the engagement from AM radio listeners across the country reaching out to their lawmakers to ensure they’re aware of the importance of AM radio in the automobile. Over the course of the last year, more than 400,000 listeners across the country have reached out to their members of Congress to tell them how important AM radio is,” LeGeyt said.

Between the two bodies, more than 240 members of Congress are co-sponsors of this AM Radio for Every Vehicle Act, LeGeyt said. “And they span the political spectrum from Bernie Sanders to Ted Cruz,” he said.

WHY THIS MATTERS

There are 4,444 licensed AM stations across the country, according to the FCC’s latest data. That includes a lot of sports talk, ag news, community service and yes, even music.

The thought of eliminating in-vehicle AM radio in new electric vehicles elicited a fierce response from the radio broadcast industry, led by the NAB.

The association is working to preserve the senior band in next-generation vehicles, and it’s been joined by the Federal Emergency Management Association, which points to AM radio as critical infrastructure during times of emergency.

But it’s more than just AM’s crucial importance during time of emergency.

“AM radio is highly important to agricultural communities, providing weather updates, crop reports and other information to farmers and ranchers. AM stations also serve communities of color and underrepresented groups with in-language, religious and other community-oriented niche programming,” NAB states on its website.

There are groups that say a mandate for automakers to include AM radio in new vehicles will curb technological progress.

The Consumer Technology Association last year launched a “Say No to the AM Radio Mandate” online campaign saying freedom of choice and technological progress are under threat by special interests in Washington pushing the proposed mandate to require AM radio in

all new cars.

But what happens in the event of an emergency? The Federal Emergency Management Agency is a supporter of AM radio.

“The success of the national public warning system hinges on the use of AM radio due to the distances its signal carries and its resiliency during catastrophic events,” said Erik Hooks, FEMA deputy administrator, in testimony before the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure in 2023. “Although many automakers suggest other communication tools like internet radio could replace broadcast AM radio, in an emergency, drivers might not have access to the internet and could miss important safety information and updates.”

As further proof of AM’s

importance in the dash during times of crisis, Michelle Lehman, NAB chief of staff and executive vice president, Public Affairs, wrote on the NAB Blog recently: “AT&T’s nationwide cell service outage in February is further proof that when it comes to reliability and hardened infrastructure, broadcasting is the one medium on which Americans can truly rely.” l

BRIDGE TECHNOLOGIES PTS/PCR TIME CHECKS

C4939 | Bridge Technologies is introducing two new PTS/PCR time checks, which will provide even more in-depth analysis of misalignment and timing slippage and allow for detection of hard-to-identify buffer timing issues, which, under traditional PTS/PCR comparison checks included as part of the standard TR 101 290 checks, might previously have been missed. These checks will be available as part of the new version 6.2 upgrade for all Bridge Technologies’ probes, including their flagship VB330 IP monitoring probe.

Through a more understanding of difference values and their interactions and patterns, alarm trigger thresholds can be configured to identify and alert engineers to time slippage skew in much harder-to-detect contexts (including subtitling), and thus predict eventual errors far more promptly and accurately.

RADIO EAS PARTNERSHIP

Digital Alert Systems, Telos and Nautel Collaborate on EAS Virtualization

Demonstrations of “EAS At The Edge” are being showcased at NAB Show

Digital Alert Systems, Telos Alliance and Nautel have partnered to “reimagine” EAS alerting for radio. The companies say their

The groups say traditional EAS deployments depend upon cascading layers of hardware and multiple boxes — often one per transmitter, even when serving combined transmission sites in a single market.

According to the announcement, similar edge-to-edge systems have been successfully deployed in video environments for years and “applying this model to radio as well will cover even more broadcast use cases.”

In booth W3920, Digital Alert Systems is showing a DASDEC emergency messaging platform networked to an Omnia.9 audio processor, which is typically the last step in the air chain before the transmitter. In the Nautel booth,

joint approach, dubbed “EAS At The Edge,” will bring the emergency alert process into the interconnected AoIP world. The concept is currently on display on the show floor.

“Unlike legacy EAS implementations that have gone unchanged since the 1990s, EAS At The Edge ... leverages modern IP-based content distribution and control to route alerts precisely to their required destinations,” the companies said in a press release.

“EAS At The Edge replaces standalone hardware centricity with an intelligent, one-to-many approach that places critical hardware at the edges of the air chain,” read the release. “Utilizing IP-based content distribution to control and insert emergency messages via the Livewire AoIP protocol, EAS data can be geo-targeted for precise alert routing, with a single input node shared for insertion to multiple streams, resulting in significant cost savings.”

The groups say the flexible nature of IP-based systems ensures that EAS At The Edge complies with current regulations and can address future FCC regulations as they evolve — an important feature as EAS devices have undergone a series of updates in recent months; notably an update to prioritize CAP-formatted alerts over legacy ones.

Demonstrations of EAS At The Edge are being featured on the show floor.

W3042, a DASDEC is linked directly to a Nautel GV2 transmitter and virtual air chain, injecting EAS alerts directly into the transmitter and its internal “Omnia For Nautel” audio processor. When an EAS message is received, Nautel’s embedded processor instantly airs alerts on both the FM and the HD air chain.

“Omnia and Nautel have collaborated for years, and both companies recognize virtual air chains are the future,” said Telos Alliance Product Manager Geoff Steadman in the release. “EAS integration has been a sticking point due to the constraints of legacy approaches, but with Digital Alert Systems’ deep knowledge of workflow and regulatory realities, and their adoption of the Livewire+/AES67 standard, EAS finally enters the radio IP ecosystem.”

Bill Robertson, vice president of business development for Digital Alert Systems, said “What we’re showing at NAB Show is our first integration, but we already see more ways to evolve this as it parallels many of the things we’ve been doing in the video space.” l

POLITICAL AD SPEND

Economic Outlook Highlights 2024 Broadcast Advertising Trends

Industry analysts say video is where the money is

During the economic outlook session “TV and Radio: Identifying Opportunities and Concerns,” three industry analysts dug into how the political year will shape local advertising, how radio and smaller-market stations can tap into video, and what events impacted 2023 spending and will influence the 2024 forecast.

BIA Advisory Services released its 2024 U.S. Local Advertising Forecast for the broadcast industry on April 13. During the Sunday session, Nicole Ovadia, vice president of forecasting and analysis at

BIA, broke down some of the key findings.

The data represents nationwide ad spending in all 210 TV markets and 253 radio markets.

Ovadia said local advertising is expected to be up $172 billion, or 9 percent, from 2023 to 2024. This growth over 2023 will in part be driven by political spending as the November election draws nearer.

While inflation continues to be a problem, Ovadia says political advertising spending will bolster the industry, bringing in $11.1 billion in 2024, as compared to $9 billion in 2022 during the midterm elections.

“Truly red and truly blue states

will still see a significant rise in money spent,” said Ovadia. “The political year is positive in general and we are expecting interest rates to come down.”

Justin Nielson, principal analyst at S&P Global Market Intelligence, shared some of his own 2023 observations and forecasts for 2024.

While ratings and core advertising for many TV groups dipped in 2024 — in part due to the actors’and writers’ strikes, which finally came to an end in November — Nielsen said TV can expect a big boost from the election year, as well as a few notable, high-profile sporting events.

He said the Olympics in late July will be particularly beneficial to boost advertising spending, in addition to the creation of the USL Super League; a new first-division professional women’s soccer league, which is slated to begin play in August 2024.

S&P’s own U.S. 2024 Advertising Forecast shows an expected 0.7 percent, or $15 billion, decline in radio revenue. Like BIA, while S&P expects moderately improved advertising in legacy media, such as linear TV and radio, it will not be until the second half of 2024.

Despite more radio-specific hurdles, like staying relevant in the car dashboard or strengthening AM radio’s reach, Nielsen said he sees opportunities for tying digital and live events into radio’s advertising space.

“Radio ads are predominantly local,” said Nielson. “Radio’s lower ad cost and return on investment will continue to make its advertising relevant.”

Speaking of economic growth opportunities, Rob Babin, executive vice president of radio at Cox Media Group, said video will present a growth opportunity for the broadcast industry — whether that means further tapping into social media or translating everyday audio/web content to share visually.

Radio’s lower ad cost and return on investment will continue to make its advertising relevant.”

Ovadia agreed, saying: “Video is where the money is at. It is the future of your smaller-market radio growth.” She said video can serve as a “low-cost extension of your advertiser’s brand.”

“You are the original influencers,” said Ovadia. “I believe we are connected to our communities in a way no one else can be.” l

Sustainability Takes Its Place

The NAB Show celebrates six winners in Excellence in Sustainability

NAB Show celebrated sustainability champions in six categories during its annual “Excellence in Sustainability Awards” ceremony. A discussion of the award-winning green production practices of HBO’s “True Detective: Night Country” preceded the presentation.

Executive producer Mari Jo Winkler-Ioffreda shared the show’s approach to sustainability, which started with the initial decision to shoot the Alaska-set program in Iceland. This made sense for a host of reasons, from the extensive EV infrastructure on the island, to the fact that the country uses a very high percentage of sustainable energy from geothermal and other sources.

“There is an openness to sustainability in Iceland,” said Winkler-Ioffreda. She added that the crew had an environment easier to work in with less travel on the island, along with a small local film industry. She said they could use a lot of local crew, which cut carbon-heavy transportation. A battery-powered generator was used for much of the shoot as well. Creative use and re-use of sets was

also standard.

Winkler-Ioffreda said that a similar shoot in a United States or Canada location would have produced two-to-three times more carbon. She added that from her perspective, cost-competitive, clean, mobile battery power to replace diesel generators is a big need currently. “There’s a desire and a demand for non-diesel power … we need more units, an acceleration of clean mobile power to market to get prices down.”

Beyond “True Detective: Night Country” winning its award for Green Production Practices, recognition was given across five other categories. Judged by an independent panel of experts, award winners were recognized for innovations that promote sustainability and foster economic and social development. Amazon Web Services (AWS) sponsored the awards ceremony.

“NAB Show is proud to recognize the individuals and companies leading the way in sustainability in our industry,” said Chris Brown, executive vice president and managing director, NAB Global Connections and Events. “As we celebrate our collective commitment to environmental responsi-

bility and the creation of a more sustainable future for our industry, we hope to inspire innovation and encourage best practices.”

“We want to congratulate all of this year’s winners on their innovations that equally benefit our industry and our planet,” said Samira Bakhtiar, general manager of Media and Entertainment, Games and Sports at AWS. NAB Show and AWS selected The Sustainable Entertainment Society as the recipient of proceeds from the Excellence in Sustainability Awards Program. Melanie Windle, executive director of The Sustainable Entertainment Society, accepted the donation.

This year’s winners are:

The Champion in Sustainability award for an individual that has consistently demonstrated leadership in sustainability went to Phillippe Wetzel, CEO, VITEC.

The Community & Social Impact award for projects or practices that benefit local communities, promote social responsibility and improve the well-being of employees, stakeholders and society went to Harmonic.

The Emerging Talent in Sustainability award for a young professional or emerging talent

making a significant impact in advancing sustainability within the industry went to Prathamesh Tare, Prime Focus Technologies.

The Green Production Practices award for a content creator prioritizing eco-friendly production methods, such as sustainable set design, green production and reduced environmental impact during production, went to HBO’s “True Detective: Night Country ”

The Leadership in Sustainability award for an organization that has launched or completed a sustainability initiative that takes critical steps to transform its business in line with a sustainable future went to Irdeto.

In the Sustainable Product or Service category, awards were given out to large, medium and small companies who presented innovative technologies, products or solutions that significantly improve sustainability or provide sustainable product or service alternatives, addressing a critical environmental challenge. Ross Video won the large company award for its Ultrix Hyperconverged Platform; the Salt-E Dog sustainable sodium power supply from Anton/Bauer (Videndum Production Solutions) won the medium company award; and SiliconCore Common Cathode Technology from SiliconCore Technology won the small company award. l

Sinclair Launches

Broadspan Datacasting Platform for ATSC 3.0

Sinclair announced Sunday the launch of a new datacasting platform for ATSC 3.0. The “Broadspan” datacasting service was developed in partnership with CDN provider Edgio to enable businesses to distribute files, updates or video over-the-air to any device with a 3.0 receiver, including cars, TV sets or mobile devices.

Datacasting via ATSC 3.0, which combines broadcast with IP — has been one of the earliest ways broadcasters can monetize 3.0 and Sinclair’s announcement marks a major step in its evolution. “Broadspan isn’t just a gamechanger,” said Eric Black, Edgio CTO. “It’s a paradigm shift in defining immersive entertainment.”

The service will be available from Sinclair stations broadcasting ATSC 3.0 in 43 markets, but Sinclair CEO Chris Ripley said other station groups are welcome to join. With ATSC 3.0 now available to about 75 percent of the United States, Ripley noted that as more stations deploy the standard in additional markets, the result will be a nationwide 3.0 datacasting network.

“Linking those markets and stations to allocate data capacity efficiently among potential data customers is essential in establishing broadcasting as a competitive data distribution platform,” Ripley said. “Broadband provides the means to easily use that network. As the ATSC 3.0 transition proceeds, and that network expands, broadband will only become more appealing as a reliable and commercially attractive option for data delivery.”

Broadcasters and transmission tech provider Rohde & Schwarz highlighted a number of advances in NextGen TV, also known as ATSC 3.0, broadcasting at a special event that featured the launch of the first ATSC 3.0 native transmitter, the new R&STE1.

Speaking at a Rohde & Schwarz press event on Sunday, Jörg Fries, the company’s vice president of broadcast, amplifier and media solutions, described the transmitter as ushering in a new generation of transmission that is both sustainable and smart, with notable reductions in energy consumption and features that made it easier to use and maintain.

Jörg Fries, vice president of broadcast, amplifier and media solutions at Rohde & Schawrz introduced the R&STE1 transmitter, the first ATSC 3.0 native transmitter.

Richard Friedel, board chair of the Advanced Television Systems Committee added that the launch “marks a significant milestone, not only for Rohde & Schwarz but also for the ATSC to celebrate innovation and progress in the pursuit of excellence. We want to extend our heartfelt congratulations to their remarkable achievement. The state-of-the-art transmitter promises not only reduced costs, but also [a reduction] in carbon emissions with a 15 to 40 percent improvement in energy efficiency — a major accomplishment.”

During the launch event for the R&STE1 transmitter, Friedel also discussed several other areas that the ATSC is working on that include the creation of a sustainability committee, its work on the Broadcast Core Network, and the personal video codec, PVC.

In separate remarks, Mark Aitken, senior vice president of Sinclair Broadcast Group and president of One Media, highlighted the ability of new ATSC 3.0 transmitters to open up new revenue opportunities in datacasting and other areas. l —George Winslow, TV Tech

The weather product illustrates the company’s determination to be more customer-centric as the needs of the TV industry change.

“We want to grow our customers, but we also want to grow and diversify our customer base geographically and from an end-market standpoint,” said CEO Mike Truex. He said that in order to do that, the company has to grow revenue and grow its customer base, which enables it to up investment on research and development. In 2023, Chyron increased its customer count by 11 percent and its R&D investment, including artificial intelligence, was up 13 percent.

Live sports is another area where Chyron is focusing. Nikole McStanley, product portfolio director, said Chyron worked closely with NBCUniversal on its package of Big Ten football games.

“NBC Sports values the importance of enriched storytelling, so not only do the graphics have to be beautiful, but they have to be versatile and flexible for their operators to be able to quickly change things on the fly,” McStanley said. “If we hadn’t had that tight collaboration, some of those features would never have been even conceived,” she said. l

New Neoti LED Display Is Pantone Validated

On Sunday, Neoti (Booth 2816) announced that its new UHD Pro XF+ is the world’s first dvLED display to be named Pantone Validated and Pantone SkinTone Validated.

Thomas Dlugos, director of sales, OEM, for X-Rite, the parent company for Pantone, said the validations exemplifies Neoti’s strength in color technology. He also emphasized the designation is an objective measurement. “This is not an arbitrary color standard,” he added.

“Color matters,” noted Neoti CEO Derek Myers. “We know it holds immense significance in the modern world. Color fidelity is not just a technical detail. The future relies on preserving the integrity of the content displayed.”

The UHD Pro XF+ features 26-bit color depth, immersive 3D performance without viewing fatigue, and multi-image frame sync. Thanks to its sophisticated color space engine, it achieves pure black levels and gradients at extremely low brightness, making it versatile for even the most demanding ambient light environments. Plus, InfiniteColor technology ensures that true color uniformity is maintained over the life of the display. l

CINEGY MULTIVIEWER 24.2

HITOMI BROADCAST MATCHBOX ANALYZER

SL5080 | Hitomi Broadcast is demonstrating what it feels is the simplicity of solving latency and lip-sync challenges with its proven MatchBox solution. With television coverage of live events such as sports, and the growing move into remote production for even the largest coverage, the need to find a simple, reliable and accurate way to measure differential latencies between multiple video and audio sources is vital.

Hitomi’s MatchBox is the simplest, most precise and most widely used solution, according to the company. With the MatchBox Glass app, a camera assistant simply holds an iPhone in front of the camera lens and the audio and video test patterns pass through the complete chain, to be measured and aligned at the final control point. The whole process takes seconds. Hitomi is continuing to enhance its products to make it easier to achieve minimum latency and precise sound/vision alignment, even as the channel count goes up.

GLENSOUND DARK DAWN 1616M DANTE/AES67 INTERFACE
