SHOW OVERVIEW

NAB Show Streamlines Search for Answers in a Transformed Marketplace

Artificial intelligence is prevalent in show floor initiatives, technology and learning opportunities

As the media and entertainment industry meets again in Las Vegas, NAB Show kicks off the beginning of its second century. Organizers describe an agenda suited to the individual needs of tens of thousands of broadcasters, filmmakers, content creators and others from around the world who are looking for answers in a

marketplace transformed by the internet and cloud technology.

“At the 2024 NAB Show we, as an industry, have the opportunity to set the tone for the next 100 years,” said Chris Brown, executive vice president and managing director of NAB Global Connections and Events. “It’s an exciting time to see technology reach a point where truly extraordinary advances are possible — in how content is produced,

distributed and consumed.”

Attendees at the show are being greeted by a Las Vegas Convention Center in the middle of a $600 million renovation. For this year’s show, the North Hall is closed for its facelift.

“NAB Show is dedicated to providing a seamless and exciting experience for all attendees during the North Hall renovation,” said Brown. “When South Hall was closed in 2023, we adapted and

even grew the show. This year we are approaching our plans with the same mentality.”

The Vegas Loop can be used for fast and convenient transportation between halls. “The system offers quick and efficient movement underground across the LVCC campus with stops that connect the West Hall to the front of the Central Hall, and from there, it is a quick walk to South,” he said. Golf cart transportation is also being offered to make trips between Central and South Halls more convenient.

The Zones are back on the show floor as a place for interactive discovery, learning and networking. They are curated around each of the three major pillars Create, Connect and Capitalize. Brown said the Community Zones provide insight into the major tech and content workflow trends within each pillar to help attendees connect with relevant exhibitors and products.

“These are must-see stops for every attendee to engage in a planned activity or just drop in to see what’s happening,” said Brown. The Connect and Capitalize Zones are located in West Hall; the Create Zone is in South Hall.

The latest trends, technology and techniques for the M&E industry are front and center at NAB Show. “Our agenda is shaped to ensure there are answers, or at least very good clues, to help everyone sort out the challenges and opportunities they face daily,” said Brown.

Of course, it is impossible to talk about trends without focusing on artificial intelligence and, in particular, generative AI. There are more than 120 sessions and 130 exhibitors at the show featuring AI. Industry heavyweights will be on the Main Stage discussing “AI in Media and Entertainment,” as well as speaking at dozens of exciting sessions including “AI in the Newsroom: The Good, the Bad, and What’s Ahead for the Industry,” “Convergence of Artificial Intelligence, Cybersecurity and Broadcasting” and “AI Strategies for Sales, Marketing and Operations.”

One new activation featuring AI is a demonstration developed in partnership with Microsoft. In the Capitalize Zone, through a partnership that leverages Microsoft’s technologies, show attendees can immerse themselves in new details, trivia, interactive quizzes and personalized insights from beloved, television shows, transforming the viewing process into a competitive interactive space.

Brown said, “Leveraging AI and machine-learning algorithms, the platform can analyze users’ past behavior to predict what content and challenges might interest them, creating a truly personalized viewing experience.”

Consumer consumption habits are driving everything from production to business models. As FAST channels have proliferated, so has the move to ad-supported tiers and new bundles. The eco-

nomics have driven up subscription fees.

“As all of this takes shape, it is hard not to see how it is all coming back to a relatively familiar monthly price point for the average viewer or family,” Brown said. “The good news is it is driving more choice, and, while there has been some dampening — due to the strikes, and those same economics — there is more content. Across the entire television, film and video landscape there is evermore video-centric content being created.”

The internet and related advances in production tools have made high-quality content creation something much more attainable for all. Nowhere has this trend manifested itself with more impact than in the Content Creator space, Brown said.

“The growth of video created for social channels has been incredible over the past few years; so much so that this is a segment of the wider media industry that cannot be ignored,” said Brown. NAB Show is introducing the Creator Lab in the South Hall as a networking and learning hub for this community. The lab brings together some of the best and brightest from the Creator Economy for on-floor learning sessions and networking opportunities. This exhibit area is in the South Hall. From a pure tech perspective, many of the trends that were at the forefront going into the pandemic have only accelerated. These include virtualization, cloud-based

and remote production, and an overall shift from hardware-based to software-based infrastructure. Brown said he expects these are “ongoing themes for our audience, and we’ll be covering all of them in various parts of our programming, both on and off the show floor. Of note, we will have a unique demonstration of a cloudbased workflow in the Connect Zone in the West Hall, produced in partnership with Diversified. We will also be featuring an AWS News Studio in the West Hall lobby using a cloud-based workflow.

It’s an exciting time to see technology reach a point where truly extraordinary advances are possible — in how content is produced, distributed and consumed.”
CHRIS BROWN

“Through a multi-faceted partnership with AWS, we will also introduce an AWS Partner Pavilion to provide a unified look at all the possibilities available through the AWS ecosystem,” said Brown.

Another important trend we have witnessed over the past few years has been the blending of cinematic and broadcast techniques, particularly in the area of live broadcast production. Returning to the show floor is the CineCentral exhibit area, which offers a lablike experience for those looking to leverage and upgrade their skills across these workflows.

“This year we have expanded this area, added more hands-on training opportunities led by some of cinema’s leading talent, and partnering with the top Hollywood trade groups,” Brown said.

New this year, outside between the Central and South Halls, CineCentral includes space for an Open Air Lab featuring drone training and demonstrations by

Lightcraft as well as motion and movement workshops with cranes and dollies from Chapman Leonard.

Zeroing in on the broadcast world, “the Broadcast District worked spectacularly well last year,” Brown said. “It was another community-based initiative — really a simple concept, which was all about providing a focal point for a very important community within the overall attendee mix.” It’s a meeting room-based initiative offering broadcasters a combination of short-form education, peer sharing sessions and mixed format networking-learning “Sip and Learn” sessions.

This will be another important show for NextGen TV. Brown said ATSC 3.0 will again have a large presence in the West Hall, and there will be numerous sessions throughout the program “addressing the current and future state of this critical new technology. On the radio side, there will no doubt be interest in digital strategies, radio’s overall future in the auto dashboard, ideas in generating ad revenue and ensuring AM remains in every automobile.”

PropelME is an area for qualified companies navigating the broadcast, media and entertainment entrepreneurial landscape. These early-stage startups are eager to explore, learn, collaborate and drive impactful change within their respective markets. PropelME serves as a hub for conversations on regulatory shifts, technological advancements, content consumption trends and other crucial industry dynamics, fostering an environment for collaborative solutions honed through personal discovery and growth journeys.

“Finally, I would be remiss if I didn’t mention our efforts to elevate the industry’s focus on sustainability by recognizing the companies that are leading the way in this area. Our Excellence in Sustainability Awards return with expanded categories and winners being recognized on our Main Stage,” Brown said in closing. The awards program will be held today at 1 p.m. l

NAB Show to Address Emerging Creator Economy With New Creator Lab

With a projected $480 billion value by 2027, the creator economy is coming on strong

At first glance, it might seem a bit odd that the 2024 NAB Show is rolling out a new feature dubbed the “Creator Lab.”

After all, an army of production people with a diverse array of skills used to create video and film content — all of whom are “creators” — as well as hundreds of exhibitors and a full program of sessions related to production have been a fixture of the show seemingly forever.

However, show organizers are offering the new Creator Lab for a good reason: remarkable ecosystem growth. Goldman

Sachs Research published an article in April 2023 that forecasts the creator economy could nearly double in size, climbing from $250 billion last year to $480 billion by 2027.

The new NAB Show Creator Lab, located in the South Upper Hall, will give those with a traditional background as well as new creators the chance to become experts in this changing marketplace, said Robin Raskin, writer and TV personality, who is co-producing the lab for NAB.

“The definition of the broadcast industry is changing,” she said.

“Video is the lingua franca for a whole new generation, and NAB had the foresight to recognize this,

develop the Creator Lab, and get in front of the tsunami of creators driving this transformation.”

Jim Louderback, editor and publisher of the Inside the Creator Economy newsletter and co-producer of the Creator Lab, saw a chasm between traditional media production talent and pioneers in the creator economy a decade ago, but gradually that has been changing.

“There was a big gap in between, and they sort of looked at each other askance. But now it’s more of a continuum where we see producers, editors and talent moving along the continuum between the creator economy and traditional media. Today, you

3 Session topics range from hands-on production tips to the evolving economics of the creator economy. Keynote interviews focus on the real-world experiences of large creator economy players from MrBeast and “The Adam Carolla Show.”

4 Technology vendors, including sponsor Blackmagic Design, will exhibit some of the affordable, highperformance solutions helping creators produce top-notch content.

need to know and be familiar with both,” he said.

Creator Lab presentations are designed to inform both new creators and those with traditional media backgrounds, said Louderback. “I’ve got three creators who are going to talk about what their studios look like.”

Automotive DIY YouTuber Lucky Lopez, for example, shoots from his garage and has built some custom technology to make it simpler for him to produce content without a large production team. “He’s going to bring in a lot of the technology that makes it easier to shoot in his garage,” said Louderback. Beyond hands-on sessions,

the Creator Lab will address the management side of the creator economy. Marc Hustvedt, president of MrBeastYouTube, will join Louderback on Tuesday to discuss running one of the biggest new media companies operating today. “You know, MrBeast has as many views on a regular basis as big television programs and networks,” said Louderback.

A sign of the maturing creator economy, Dylan Huey said, is the interest agents and management companies are beginning to take in influencers and creators.

During one of the lab’s keynote interviews, Louderback will talk with Chris Laxamana, executive producer of “The Adam Carolla Show,” to discuss its evolution. They will cover a diverse array of topics, including social media legal landmines, on-the-go creators, creators in the cloud, investing in and with creators and credentialing in the creator economy.

Dylan Huey, CEO of REACH, the national organization for collegiate influencers and an influencer himself with more than 2 million

social media followers, will take the deep dive on credentials during his session: “Empowering Creators: Unveiling the Credentials Revolution in the Creator Economy.”

“The creator economy has evolved to the point where now creators are seeing the need to have organizations similar to SAG-AFTRA [the Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists] or the Producers Guild of America to help amplify them,” said Huey.

A sign of the maturing creator economy, he said, is the interest agents and management companies are beginning to take in influencers and creators. “Management companies like CAA [Creative Artists Agency] and WME [William Morris Endeavor] are starting to open their door for concentrators. That will be a big focus during my presentation,” he said.

The Creator Lab also will feature a number of technology vendors that are helping to propel the productions of new content creators to rival those of traditional productions with lower-cost, high-performance equipment. One such company, Blackmagic Design, is the sponsor of the lab.

“Creators are often starting from the ground up, and when users create a baseline workflow with Blackmagic Design products, we are often seeing these creators build their empires on a Blackmagic Design ecosystem,” said Bob Caniglia,

It is time to take risks. Never has it been more important to support innovation. And yes, that means devoting people and financial resources to projects that may not succeed. Each chance taken leads to lessons that can be applied to what we are to become as an industry. Continuing business as usual will have only one outcome, and it is the one none of us wants. We have an incredible opportunity to be the generation to make real change.”

C1808 | Telos Alliance is expanding its 25-Seven product family with the PDMX program delay manager.

SU5051 | JLCooper Electronics is expanding its eBOX product family with the eBOX Hub. The new eBOX product operates as a central core for connecting up to seven additional remote eBOX and eBOX GPI8 units, (eight units total, including the eBOX Hub). It’s suitable for LAN and internet GPI control with switchers, cameras, alarms, lights, monitors, projectors, commercial insert and other applications that use GPI/Tally, allowing broadcast or networked facilities to control remote locations or distant machine rooms from a facility’s central server. eBOX and eBOX GPI8 are 10/100 BASE-T (Ethernet) to GPI/Tally hardware interfaces. They act as portals for controlling devices across your facility or across the world. eBOX units communicate over standard TCP/IP, which the company says allows them to be used with any host computer. With TCP/ IP, traffic can be routed over internal LANs, wireless LANs, MANs, WANs and over the internet.

The Data-Fueled AI Revolution in Media

The marriage of AI and data-rich media companies is already transforming production, distribution and monetization

Like a science fiction novel where artificial intelligence is involved in everything people do, the 2024 NAB Show is seeing artificial intelligence, and in particular generative AI, assume a level of prominence that only highly disruptive, once-in-a-generation technologies like the rise of digital media or the internet can command.

Separating some of the sci-fi hype surrounding AI from real long-term opportunities remains difficult, but nearly a dozen NAB

Show exhibitors say there is little doubt that the real-world marriage between AI and data opens enormous opportunities for media companies with extensive consumer data and metadata-rich content libraries.

“ChatGPT and Gemini have revolutionized the world of generative text, and we expect to see similar disruptions in the video and audio generations using AI,” said Bibhas Kumar Samanta, head of sales, India and MENA at Interra Systems, which is showing AI-powered quality control and captioning solutions.

“With newly released tools like OpenAI Sora, content creators will be able to produce short videos rapidly and more cost-effectively, which is especially relevant for ads, marketing and social media campaigns and will lead to new forms of content engagement and monetization.”

Some of this builds on existing, very large businesses and is likely to only get bigger. The International Data Corp. (IDC) is now predicting that the worldwide AI software market will grow from $64 billion in 2022 to nearly $251 billion in 2027 and that generative

AI platforms and applications will generate additional revenues of $55.7 billion in 2027.

“Many of the use cases that are being explored by our customers today involve applying generative AI to areas that already use some form of AI, such as monetization, upscaling, media supply chain and search,” said Chris Blandy, director of Strategy and Business Development for Media & Entertainment at Amazon Web Services (AWS).

Carol Bettencourt, vice president of marketing, said Chyron will be demonstrating a number of products with AI features that greatly streamline workflows for graphics and live production. “We believe data is so important to the storytelling [and our solutions] that it has to be considered in our projects from the very start.”

“New AI solutions enable M&E companies to swiftly comprehend and act on data, which is an industry advantage and a necessity for optimized content production,

management and monetization,” said Sean King, senior vice president at Veritone. The company is launching “Ask Veri,” a media intelligence tool designed to help users maximize the value of their content and data.

The extensive data that broadcasters, studios, streamers and other media companies have relating to consumer behavior and the content they create, give the M&E industry a leg up when it comes to capitalizing on AI advances, but it also underlies some of the biggest challenges posed by AI. “The legal landscape in terms of content rights for generative AI is a minefield right now with a multitude of lawsuits having been filed against tech companies by artists and authors,” explained Camilla Powell, product manager at disguise.

Powell stresses, however, that the marriage of AI and data is already producing major advances in content creation. In addition to applications in editing, remote production and content personalization, the melding of data from cameras, LED walls, lenses and other components has produced improved AI tools for virtual production. “Instead of creating virtual production backdrops in weeks, teams can use AI to compose photorealistic nearly 3D backdrops in minutes,” she said.

More specifically, a host of companies such as Chyron, Vizrt and Sony will be offering AI-powered tools for live production and sports. Sony, for example, will be showing the Sony AI Automated Production (Sony A2P) solution,

said Alan Gagliardotto, senior product manager, Sony Electronics.

“Using AI and integrated data in our news and sports workflows means we can build graphics and the playout of stories quicker and easier,” said Steve Taylor, vice president, R&D at Vizrt, which will be showing Viz Engine and other solutions with AI features.

Other applications, which are too numerous to list, run the gamut from content creation and distribution to monetization and personalization for both consumers and operations. Elke Hungenaert, vice president of product management, video network at Synamedia, noted: “We’ve all heard of the benefits of AI for consumer experience, but what it can do for video service providers on the business side is equally game-changing,” offering them tools to improve video quality while delivering “video content more cost efficiently,” Hungenaert concluded. l

Five AI Takeaways, Not Generated by AI

The Marriage of AI and Data Fuels Innovation — “Data is the key foundation for the training of machine-learning platforms,” explains Steve Taylor, vice president, R&D at Vizrt. “The better the data … the more exciting the experience [that] can be provided to the viewer.”

Personalization — After years of struggling to offer more personalized advertising, and content discovery, AI tools promise to make personalized media a reality. “In the future [in sports] you’ll see partner collaboration with different AI engines to personalize the fan experience,” said Alan Gagliardotto, senior product manager, Sony Electronics.

Democratization of Production — AI is producing “more cost-effective virtual production than ever before, making the technology from Hollywood features [available] to indie productions,” said Camilla Powell, product manager at disguise. Old Efficiencies Supercharged — AI applications promise to streamline existing applications for encoding, monitoring, quality control, bandwidth management, app development and other applications. “AI, machine learning and computer vision algorithms are all being used to automate practical content distribution tasks,” explained Mathieu Planche, CEO, Witbe, and in areas like app testing they have exponentially sped up processes.

AI Needs Humans — AI pioneer and Stanford Professor FeiFei Li’s adage that “AI is made by humans” and that “there is nothing artificial about it,” is also being taken to heart by companies who emphasize the importance of training people in the developing AI solutions. “You have to train people to use them properly,” said Carol Bettencourt, vice president of marketing, at Chyron who also stressed the importance of working with clients to further improve the tools.

I’ve spent the last decade not only learning about my art, but the business around it. With a little guidance and bravery, you’d be amazed how close you are to your dream projects.”

GREEN PROGRESS

Sustainability Progressing Amidst Evolving Regulatory Framework

Is sustainability settling in as part of the industry’s DNA?

Sustainability was one of the big topics at NAB Show last year, and this year the topic has matured within a media environment during technological and regulatory change.

“We are classically progressing on our sustainability journey as an industry,” said Barbara Lange, principal and CEO of Kibol21, a consultancy firm focused on guiding media tech organizations on their path to sustainability.

Lange said this was particularly true for companies coming out

of Europe or doing business with European media companies. The EU has a new mandate called the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD), which is a disclosure framework that requires larger companies to begin reporting sustainability metrics assessing the impact of companies on people and the environment along with possible financial risks.

Lange said larger organizations need to start gathering the data, and they need to have their supply chain gathering the data. The largest companies will have to apply the new rules for the first time in the 2024 financial year, for

reports published in 2025. Small and medium enterprises will be required to report over the next few years.

According to Lange, a smaller NAB Show vendor that wants to supply one of the companies facing CSRD reporting needs to have its sustainability ducks in a row when approaching a supply chain management or RFP process: “Even if you’re not bound by CSRD, if you’re a software company from Portland that wants to do business with a European company, you’ll most likely have to comply with their procurement supply chain code of conduct.”

Beyond CSRD, other mandates are developing. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission has evolving sustainability rules of yet-to-be-determined scope. California also passed its own legislation late last year that could be important for anybody doing business in Hollywood, although the implementation of the bills may be delayed by the state’s budget woes.

One company trying to stay well ahead of the curve for any possible sustainability metrics is U.K.-based InSync. CEO James Taylor said the company is continually refining its reporting practices, ensuring adaptability to emerging regulatory landscapes.

At NAB Show the company’s MCC-HD2 motion-compensated frame rate converter — developed in collaboration with FOR-A — is being billed as an energy-saver in a compact form.

“InSync proactively prepares for sustainability reporting,” said Taylor. “We meticulously track and document energy usage

throughout the product lifecycle, collaborate closely with suppliers to ensure transparency, and integrate sustainability considerations into product design.”

Christopher Braehler, vice president of product for SDVI, said that customers are bringing up concerns around cost and reporting quite often. “We had one client that weighed reporting at 20 percent in their RFP and discussed it as a factor they use to decide which vendor to work with. Two separate European broadcasters also raised these concerns, with one asking us to contribute reporting to their overall business sustainability goals.”

SDVI is very proactive on sustainability. Since 2021 the company has provided each customer with a report on its footprint resulting from the usage of SDVI products, and in 2022, it launched its Net-Zero Supply Chains initiative, which relies on purchasing carbon offsets. Braehler himself won an individual award at the inaugural NAB Show Excellence in Sustainability

Awards last year at NAB Show. This year’s event happens today on the Main Stage, 1 p.m.

Sustainability is about more than mandates and metrics; it’s also about responsibility and often just a desire to do well. It can also save money.

For its part, Cobalt Digital has considered the lifetime of a typical product — often 10 years or more — and determined that the best environmental impact they can have is to design products that use the least amount of power and cooling.

“We design using the latest generation FPGA devices, which are significantly more energy efficient than general-purpose CPUs, said Dr. Ciro Noronha, Cobalt CTO. “Our products can do the job at a fraction of the energy cost of doing it on a general-purpose CPU.”

Linda Tadic, founder and CEO of Digital Bedrock said that companies are definitely starting to realize being sustainable can actually save money. “It isn’t nec-

essarily more expensive to try to be green, to try to be sustainable.”

Tadic mentioned that best practices and guidelines suggested by industry organizations like the Greening of Streaming group and the Green Production Guide can often be cost-cutting, particularly those that limit travel costs through remote alternatives.

For decades transmitter companies have had energy savings front and center in marketing campaigns. Johannes Sinnhuber, product manager, Transmitter Systems, Rohde & Schwarz, said that the recent rise in the cost of energy has brought efficiency to the top of the agenda. Cost savings, doing good and meeting regulatory frameworks are again intertwined.

“Over the lifecycle of a transmitter, 99% of carbon emissions result from power consumption during operation alone,” said Sinnhuber. “Looking to energy-efficient transmitters is paramount in reducing power consumption, lowering energy bills, and ultimately reducing the carbon footprint to achieve sustainability goals.”

As a German manufacturer Rohde is also subject to meeting CSRD reporting, so the vendor has actively enhanced its existing sustainability data collection process within its business and throughout its supply chain.

TAG Video Systems began its sustainability journey in 2023, and in 2024 the company has progressed to measuring and reporting all employee, office, shipping and expense-based emissions, according to Danna Mann, TAG’s director of marketing.

Mann said that while customers rarely ask about specific standards reporting, they are very interested in the company’s sustainability program and how they measure emissions. “TAG has

made a commitment to measuring our carbon emissions as accurately as possible,” said Mann. “Efficiency or smart solutions is in our DNA. We are determined to achieve transparency when it comes to our footprint, and we want to provide our customers with that transparency. The first step in reducing and offsetting is knowing.” l

The Sustainable Exhibitor recognition is new this year.

Sustainable Exhibitor Initiative

One sustainability-related item you might notice on some booths is the logo of the Sustainable Exhibitor Initiative. This is a collaboration between NAB Show and the Media Tech Sustainability Series (MTSS) where exhibitors who demonstrate a commitment to sustainability within their show presence can be recognized as a sustainable exhibitor. MTSS scored exhibitors based on their responses to an online sustainability questionnaire.

The Cloud: Where ‘Cooperation and Collaboration Are Built-In’

Sports and live production workflows enable key efficiencies

The cloud has offered significant on-demand availability for data storage without direct active management by the user. Increasingly, however, it isn’t just the place to store content. The cloud now offers the ability to become part of the production process where it can save on infrastructure costs and aid in remote production.

Cloud-based production is beginning to see even greater adoption, and while it could provide significant advantages, it will require

new technology to support it.

“The cloud is the first technology platform where cooperation and collaboration are built-in and expected,” said Jeromy Young, CEO of Atomos. “So-called ‘Camera to Cloud’ workflows are starting to gain traction, notably for live events. Sports events, for example, can be clipped, branded and packaged for social media within seconds thanks to cloud-connected devices like the Atomos Ninja and Shogun. While the devices retain their primary function as monitor-recorders because they can attach to any HDMI or SDI source, virtually any camera can be

connected to the cloud.”

Though cloud production has always been a potentially transformative idea, it has had to overcome multiple reality-based roadblocks, including cellular signal coverage, bandwidth issues and the largely untried techniques needed for a reliable workflow. Those issues are being resolved and addressed.

“The cloud is probably the fastest way to work, can handle any workload, and is as reliable as any mature digital workflow — which is to say, very reliable,” added Young.

The industry’s move to the cloud may not be seamless, but it is coming. In the short term, it might require backup plans to ensure that productions can accommodate previously unforeseen issues.

“These are high-stakes environments, and companies can’t afford content to go down. The biggest challenge is that there is a

knowledge gap in how to deploy production to the cloud. It is gaining more steam now, and we’re still in the early days,” said Mike Gilson, chief product officer at Telestream. “The advantages will outweigh the issues that have to be overcome — including that you’re not limited by physical infrastructure.”

Magewell’s Director Mini is a complete portable production and streaming system. It combines multi-input switching, graphics, streaming, recording and monitoring in one compact device. According to the company, Director Mini can encode video up to 1080p at 60 fps and bitrates up to 30 Mbps, with an array of output possibilities.

“For live production, hybrid on-prem/cloud workflows can often enable key efficiencies,” said Nick Ma, CEO and CTO, Magewell. “While it can be used

to directly encode contribution feeds, it can also perform initial production tasks, such as switching and mixing of multiple camera angles, before creating an SRT output stream for sending to a

remote studio or cloud-based suite for further production processes — thus reducing the number of bandwidth-consuming individual feeds that must be sent into the cloud.” l

Intelligent Orchestration

Diversified is previewing its pioneering solution that could manage and scale media production and distribution, paving the way for advanced dynamic content. Located in the Connect Zone, the company’s team is discussing its approach to “intelligent orchestration,” which unifies the user, service and cost management of production environments regardless of where the infrastructure is running.

“Intelligent Orchestration powered by Diversified at the Connect Zone marks a significant departure from traditional methods of design and implementation, creating an integrated infrastructure that harmonizes cutting-edge technologies, paving the way for a transition from conventional, inflexible facilities to agile, responsive content centers,” said Jared Timmins, vice president of innovation at Diversified. “This forward-thinking approach emphasizes continuous optimization, ensuring that technological capabilities are consistently aligned with the evolving demands of the media and entertainment sectors.”

NAB Show attendees can explore several key aspects of Intelligent Orchestration, including decentralized production, streamlined media workflow orchestration and software-defined production integration.

The future of immersive media relies on the ability to distribute and monetize the content. As of now, Apple Vision Pro and Meta Quest are platforms for organizations to distribute content with a potential for monetization. It’s important that, when these organizations are looking to create and build apps or experiences for head-mounted hardware, they collaborate with creators and storytellers who have been working natively in these 3D mediums. This in turn will allow these players to leverage the true affordances of spatial computing, otherwise known as mixed reality.”

EXECUTIVE Q&A

Thomas Tang, OLY

Apantac

Artificial intelligence seems to be the buzzword lately. What technology trends will you be following most closely at NAB Show this year?

AI presents immense potential in real-time video processing for latency reduction. From basic de-interlacing to advanced tasks such as de-noising, HDR conversions and upscaling. This year, we are looking forward to some new algorithms from IP (intellectually property) providers that can propel the industry forward. AI’s capability promises significant enhancements in video processing, ensuring smoother, higher quality and lower latency.

Apantac is a long-time exhibitor at NAB Show. What brings the company back to this event each year?

I have been coming to NAB Show for more than 30 years. Apantac is still a relatively newcomer with 15 years in the industry. We utilize NAB Show to debut our latest products and connect with our customers and dealers. Once again, we’re excited to unveil our new products and technology at this year’s event, reinforcing our commitment to innovation and engagement within the industry.

MOVIE FUNDING

‘Holy Smokes’ Takes a Different Path to Filmmaking

Decentralized Pictures offers a democratic process to film financing

Funding films based on the endorsements of movie enthusiasts rather than backroom Hollywood deals is the focus of today’s session “Decentralized Pictures and the Future of Fair and Transparent Filmmaking.” The session will feature a discussion with the team behind the film “Holy Smokes,” the recipient of the Decentralized Pictures Kevin Smith Comedy Short Film Screenplay Award.

Decentralized Pictures (DCP) is a non-profit organization that uses democratic decision-making to finance films. Filmmakers can submit film proposals and apply for a chance to win awards offered on the DCP platform. The organization then has its user community review and rate each

proposal, which determines the most deserving proposals. Finalists and winners of awards are matched with DCP’s network of industry partners to assist aspiring filmmakers with financing their films.

Leo Matchett, DCP CEO and

ing projects and filmmakers are within our ecosystem, and we are taking unsolicited materials,” said Matchett. “Rather than have us as a team recreate what already exists in the industry, we’re outsourcing the peer review to the world and the community at large to vote

co-founder, will moderate the session. DCP board member and co-founder Michael Musante, vice president of Production and Acquisitions, American Zoetrope, will be one of its speakers.

“We are essentially decentralizing the decision-making process to determine who the most deserv-

and tell us which projects resonate with them, and ultimately decide which projects we should support as a foundation.”

“We offered $45,000 to make a comedy short, with filmmakers submitting scripts and selfie pitch videos,” said Musante. A “coming of age” Gen Z story, “Holy

Smokes” won this prize and went into production as a result. “Our hope with this film and other short film awards that we plan to do in the near future is that they can be a launchpad for possible feature films,” he said. “There are no guarantees, but a common pathway for films is to shoot the film as a short first, and then if the world responds in a positive way and the establishment responds in a positive way, that they might get an opportunity to make it into a feature.”

Part of the DCP concept is that reviewers whose views make a difference get rewarded for their efforts with FILMCredits, DCP’s cryptocurrency, which can be used to power future submissions to support the t4l3nt blockchain network, film submission reviews and/or donated film projects.

“If a reviewer writes a review on DCP, and it gets upvoted by a number of members of the community, that adds weight to the vote and also increases the share of the rewards pool that reviewer gets,” Musante said. “So, you’re

incentivizing people to participate in a thoughtful way. And it’s just a new path — I don’t think you’d find any filmmaker who would say, ‘I’m happy with the number of opportunities that are out there.’”

In addition to Matchett and Musante, the DCP session will include speakers DCP co-founder and chairman of the board; and Liz Destro, DCP board member and a producer in her own right. From the film “Holy

Smokes,” session participants include filmmakers Isabella Ares and Gabby Fiszman, and actor Mena Suvari.

This session, held today on the Main Stage, 4–5:30 p.m., is open to all. l

PRODUCTION TECHNIQUES

CineCentral Promotes Advanced Filmmaking Techniques

From film loading to designing complex shots, attendees can hone their production skills

Attendees come to NAB Show for a variety of reasons. One reason is to improve their production skills, learn new techniques and stay current on the latest programs. CineCentral offers attendees the opportunity to learn the latest in film and television production techniques and advance their creative storytelling skills.

“NAB Show is the largest gathering of content creators and managers worldwide,” said Kristin Petrovich, president of Createasphere. “CineCentral is the gathering place for these attendees — this is where hands-on training and guild gatherings happen. It is the gathering place for the creator.” Petrovich is also an executive director at the Society of Camera Operators. She is the organizing force behind CineCentral, which is produced in partnership with NAB Show.

Entertainment technology changes so quickly, and content creators must stay current.”
KRISTIN PETROVICH

Chris Brown, executive vice president and managing director of NAB Global Connections and Events, said CineCentral is back this year by popular demand with an expanded format. “Get ready for more space and programming, including the outdoor ‘Open Air Lab’ featuring drone training and demonstrations by Lightcraft as well as motion and movement workshops with cranes and dollies from Chapman Leonard.” Attendees will be able to see and touch this technology, which is used on Hollywood sets daily.

During the session “The Next Horizon for Cinematic Live Sports Production” panelists from major teams and networks look at the pairing of large sensor digital cameras and cinema lenses that have made their way into almost all aspects of live sports coverage, engaging audiences on a more intimate and emotional level than ever before.

The “HBO Camera Assess-

ment Series (CAS): Screening & Discussion Session” offers screening the most recent test. The CAS is an on-going project that seeks to create a rich and expansive image library, available to producers, directors and cinematographers across the Warner Bros. Discovery family. Attendees will have the opportunity to view of the most recent assessment process in the series. Followed on Tuesday with a review of the last ten years of assessments, giving the attendee keen insight into the methodology behind the testing and outcome. Both sessions will feature an audience Q&A hosted by Stephen Beres and Suny Behar, creators of the CAS. Other sessions include “CineCentral Craft Clinic: The Power of RED” with an introduction to RED, featuring a hands-on practical demonstration. Chapman Leonard and Local 80 are hosting a variety of crane and

The need to serve hyperlocal audiences, yet having enough viewers to drive meaningful revenue (and justify content costs), has traditionally been too great a challenge for most media companies. But now, the ability to efficiently distribute at scale across different platforms and devices coupled with more less-expensive production capabilities are allowing some companies to push the boundaries of how they can serve individual communities with relevant content.”

In “The Society of Camera Operators Present: Women Camera Operators Workshop,” operators of varying skill levels and experience will receive hands-on experience and instruction with seasoned instructors who carry notable credits and a wealth of knowledge.

“Entertainment technology changes so quickly, and content creators must stay current,” Petrovich said. “The need to understand what gear and tech can be used for what projects, how to problem-solve and plan, will bring more value and image quality than ever before. But most importantly, we should never forget: It is about creativity and CineCentral aims to

also inspire.”

“Check out the sessions, the gear, and step into a panel or lecture,” Petrovich said. “We have curated the best of the best in CineCentral.”

EXHIBITOR NEWS

DIELECTRIC OPTILOAD LOAD SOLUTION

W3333 | Dielectric is introducing OptiLoad, a new green, cost-reducing load solution featuring a closed-loop cooling system, protecting RF System components from failures that can cause harm to the transmission system and shelter. OptiLoad uses programmable logic controls (PLCs) to sense rising RF power and temperature levels, awakening the system to take action. OptiLoad’s PLCs also monitor the health of the demand-driven circulator pumps and fans that are activated to address RF flow and temperature rises.

The OptiLoad design includes a water column load that Dielectric has offered for two decades, with more than 5,000 units shipped worldwide. Using the water column load as a building block, Dielectric has added a built-in heat exchanger responsive to PLC activations. The water column load can run without coolant flow or fans activated with powers up to 5 kW. This ensures plenty of headroom when RF is detected and the coolant and fans start to operate prior to the load seeing 5 kW.

LIVEU ECOSYSTEM

SL5105 | LiveU is helping customers develop live content using its EcoSystem of hardware, software, service and support. The entire LiveU EcoSystem is on display and key EcoSystem players in the industry will join the LiveU Stage in the company’s booth to share their game plan for covering these events.

With LiveU Reliable Transport (LRT) sitting at the very heart of LiveU’s EcoSystem, enterprise-class interoperability is assured, the company said, providing customers with flexibility and adaptability, all underpinned by reliability and quality. Additional enhancements are being unveiled across the spectrum of the LiveU EcoSystem, demonstrating that the pioneer of IP video over bonded connections remains at the forefront of customer-centric innovation.

Visitors to the booth can enjoy hands-on experiences with LiveU’s advanced connectivity offers, including Private 5G, Low Earth Orbit Satellite and IP-based distribution.

EMOTION SYSTEMS EMOTION ENGINE

SL4085 | Emotion Systems is showcasing its latest developments in workflow management. Audio description is a hot topic, with many countries now legislating on the percentage of programming that needs to be more accessible. This provides the opportunity at NAB Show to focus on the Audio Description Module.

These various modules are integral to the Emotion Systems’ Engine, which the company says is the scalable and extremely versatile solution to managing the monitoring, processing, and metadata of ingested files. Engine is designed to integrate with popular MAM products from vendors, or to work standalone on any operating system platform.

Of particular interest is the Immersive Mix Module, which allows content to be upmixed from stereo to surround and immersive mixes, enabling it to blend into live content. This module provides for live transitions for commercials, promos or even archive footage to be blended into a live broadcast mix.

LEADER ZEN SERIES FEATURE SET EXPANSION

C5521 | Leader Instruments Corp. is expanding the feature set of its ZEN Series range of test and measurement instruments with three new additions.

The 3D LUT import for HDR to SDR and SDR to HDR conversion is an integral bidirectional conversion tool that will simplify live production workflows by integrating HDR/SDR conversion for applications such as camera shading and HDR supervision.

According to Leader, SDR Full Range is becoming a popular workflow style for digital cinematography and television drama production. SDR as normally transmitted by broadcast television channels encompasses luminance code value levels 64 to 940 (Narrow/Legal Range) of the 1024 maximum, which can be accommodated in a 10-bit digital stream.

Leader is also adding support for ARRI and RED cameras to its CINEZONE real-time false color exposure display. These new facilities are an expansion of the CINEZONE/ CINELITE toolset, which comes standard on all Leader ZEN Series models.

MENTORING OPENS DOORS

Shining a Light on NAB’s Diversity Efforts 25 Years In

DEI is proving to be good for business

Leaning into diversity is nothing new for the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB). Through its NAB Leadership Foundation, the organization has been creating diversity initiatives, alliances and mentoring programs for over 25 years. Over the past few years, NAB has created a DEI team that develops programming and initiatives to assist broadcasters with creating their own strategies.

While some companies only began focusing on DEI in the last few years, some broadcast companies have had DEI initiatives in place for many years. Despite its detractors, Michelle Duke, NAB chief diversity officer and president of the NAB Leadership Foundation (NABLF), believes DEI is still good for business.

“The more people who relate to your product or service, the wider

the audience and the larger your potential talent pool will be,” said Duke. “There is still work to be done and we are working diligently with broadcasters to meet their needs.”

ON THE SCHEDULE

Diversity Symposium sessions and speakers this year include:

LEVERAGING GENERATIVE AI FOR DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION: BALANCING BENEFITS AND RISKS

Today 2:30–3:15 p.m.

EMPOWERING DIVERSITY: CONTENT CREATORS AS DEI CHANGEMAKERS

Today, 3:30–4:15 p.m., with speakers to be announced.

WHY TOP BROADCAST EXECUTIVES ARE STAYING COMMITTED TO DEI

Monday, 2:30–3:15 p.m.

BEHIND THE SCENES: HOW INCLUSIVITY IN MEDIA PRODUCTION IMPACTS CREATIVE OUTPUT

Monday, 3:30–4:15 p.m.

All sessions will be held in rooms W208–W209

Duke and team are once again organizing the NAB Diversity Symposium, which starts today. The event will provide insight into how broadcasters are embracing DEI in the workforce and in media. Session discussion topics this year include how inclusivity impacts creative output, and how this generates more thorough and multidimensional storytelling, plus an all-important discussion on generative AI and its implications for DEI efforts.

“AI will have an impact on all areas of business, and questions around biases remain unanswered,” Duke said. “We should keep DEI top of mind as we explore the applications of this technology.”

The importance of mentoring is well documented. Companies with mentoring programs have

better employee retention and a better bottom line. People who’ve been mentored are five times more likely to be promoted than those who haven’t. Yet past research shows that a majority of women have never had a formal mentor. Media tech PR pro Sadie Groom set out to change this with Rise, a women’s networking group that evolved into a worldwide mentorship program.

Demand exceeded supply last year, so Rise provided a second round of mentoring in the United Kingdom for those who didn’t make the first cut. The organization logged 108 successful mentorships in 2023, according to RISE Program Mentoring Manager Carla Maroussas. The six-month program yields ongoing benefits in the form of relationships and resources.

“Mentors and mentees often maintain their relationship after the program ends, and mentees often stay in touch with program contributors for further support and training,” Maroussas said.

Mentoring and intentional recruitment can bring women into the media tech workforce, but they don’t necessarily stay, said Amy DeLouise, who founded #GALSNGEAR in 2016.

“There is plenty of evidence

that women are graduating with film, media studies and engineering degrees,” DeLouise said, “but eight to 10 years into the industry, they are not sticking with us. Why? Because they don’t feel like they belong.

“This is why, last year, we launched our Beta Testing Network, connecting leading hardware and software companies to women who can beta test their products — women are typically

only 23 percent of beta testers! … and why we have monthly meetups on career and tech topics on our virtual Tequity Hub.”

#GALSNGEAR will once again host its signature CONNECT Women’s Leadership Summit Tuesday, with an emphasis on personal branding.

“This includes building your own thought leadership, promoting yourself as a speaker and expert; and knowing how

There is plenty of evidence that women are graduating with film, media studies and engineering degrees. But eight to 10 years into the industry, they are not sticking with us. Why?”

to package your core values and expertise into an elevator pitch,” DeLouise said. “Those things all take practice.”

Keynoting this year’s summit is Samira Panah Bakhtiar, general manager of Media & Entertainment, Games, and Sports for Amazon Web Services. The group is also hosting its annual “Tech Talk” on the show floor today, with this year’s focus on virtual production. l

SPOTLIGHT

Over the last couple of decades, the capabilities of smaller mobile units and fly-packs have helped to increase the number of [live] productions and somewhat lower the cost of these productions. With the rise in capabilities of a single broadcast production “workstation” the last couple of years, and the lowering of the cost of this type of on-site live production, we’ve seen a flood of new productions that have truly democratized what can be delivered to the viewer at an affordable price point while still maintaining the quality that is expected of a typical broadcast production.”

MOMENTS LAB MXT-1.5 AI INDEXING

W1572 | Newsbridge is unveiling new features in what the company describes as its most sophisticated AI indexing models yet. Video scene descriptions generated by MXT-1.5 are 87.5 percent more accurate than other open-source vision language models (i.e. AI models released in 2023 and tested against MXT-1.5 on their ability to describe shots from a dataset of 45,000 frames). This unlocks efficiencies for media asset indexing.

New features include:

• Sequences Detection: MXT-1.5 improves the relevancy of search results by automatically grouping shots into the editorial sequences that content producers are looking for.

• Automatic Sound Bites: MXT-1.5 highlights soundbites in a video, allowing journalists and editors to discover compelling quotes to help tell their stories without needing to spend time scrolling an entire video or transcript.

• Media Topic Categorization: MXT-1.5 automates the categorization of videos into relevant overarching topics or themes defined by the user.

TRIVENI DIGITAL ATSC 3.0 TRANSLATOR

W3051 | Triveni Digital is showcasing its end-toend, fully redundant ATSC 3.0 offering for broadcasters.

Triveni Digital is expanding its ATSC 3.0 product line with a new suite of solutions to streamline and monetize NextGen TV service delivery.

Lowering the cost of NextGen TV service delivery is a priority for broadcasters. Triveni Digital says, by leveraging its ATSC 3.0 Translator fueled by patented technology, broadcasters can efficiently repeat or translate their existing ATSC 3.0 signal to other areas without the need for an entire broadcast chain, minimizing costs, equipment and power usage. The ATSC 3.0 Translator also includes an optional feature for NextGen TV signing, helping broadcasters expand the reach of ATSC 3.0 services.

The company also is highlighting how the Translator validates NextGen TV signals in real time down to the frame structure, offering support for multiple physical layer pipes.

HITACHI KOKUSAI DK-H700 4K BOX CAMERA

C4516 | Hitachi Kokusai is demonstrating its next-generation DK-H700 4K box camera that suits a variety of high-end broadcast, professional AV and government applications.

The camera’s artistic capabilities and striking visual quality are amplified through the camera’s advanced digital signal processing and HDR support. The DK-H700’s design also includes 2/3-inch, RGB 3-chips, 8.3 million pixel each CMOS sensors. The company says, collectively, these features add up to produce sharp and clear images with minimal noise, lifelike color fidelity and extraordinary sensitivity.

The DK-H700 is a multiformat solution that complies with ITU-R.BT-2020 wide color gamut specs and operates within REC BT2100 High Dynamic Range standards. These allow content creators to produce independent programs in a dual workflow configuration for both HDTV and/or UHD SDI output formats.

Hitachi Kokusai also is demonstrating its SK-UHD7000 Series, including the SK-UHD7000-S2 camera introduced last year. The SK-UHD7000-S2 is a multiformat camera with an affordable license option for 4K.

IMAX ADVANCED OPTIMIZATION, MONITORING TOOLS

W1529 | IMAX Corp. is unveiling its latest advancements in streaming optimization and monitoring software. These software tools use VisionScience (IMAX’s Emmy Award-winning technology that the company said successfully maps the human visual system) to create proficiencies that represent a leap in streaming efficiency while maintaining exceptional visual quality.

Featured demos include:

• StreamSmart: This innovative orchestration platform integrates with existing workflows — using IMAX’s VisionScience technology to preserve video quality while further reducing file sizes on top of existing optimization methods — to ensure quality and cut costs.

NAB attendees can also see the latest advances of IMAX Enhanced technology on Disney+.

PLAYBOX NEO BROADCAST PLAYOUT & CHANNEL BRANDING

SL6099 | PlayBox Neo is introducing refinements to its range of broadcast playout and channel branding solutions. These include additional creative functionality for AirBox Neo-20, Media Gateway and Capture Suite.

AirBox Neo-20 gains a graphic mixer with 4K-UHD optimization plus a video resize capability. Also added are separate fade transitions for every logo preset implementation and full 1:1 mirror mode.

Media Gateway enables routing and encoding to be performed entirely in software, offering significant savings in terms of cost, space and maintenance. Playbox Neo is adding support for 1:1 aspect ratio 3840 x 3840 resolution 25 to 60 fps 1:1 video display plus audio visualization.

Capture Suite is now being expanded to include support for the XMP file format. Originally created by Adobe Systems, XMP simplifies the processing and communication of metadata related to media content creation and allows close integration with Adobe Premiere video editing software.

STUDIO TECHNOLOGIES MODEL 201 INTERPRETER’S CONSOLE

C2346 | Studio Technologies is introducing Model 201 Interpreter’s Console to the North American market at NAB Show. The Model 201 is a Dante audio-over-Ethernet-enabled unit that is suitable for use in single- and multi-language situations both locally or in off-site/remote applications.

The Model 201 creates a complete interpreter position and includes both standard features as well as advanced functionality that the company says is not typically provided by “off-the-shelf” interpretation equipment. The Model 201 includes the ability to create two independent interpretation audio channels. Configuration choices allow a variety of audio content to be included in the interpretation audio, and content that can be automatically muted or dimmed (reduced in level) when interpretation is active. This is especially important for off-site or internet streaming applications.

A dual-channel (stereo) headphone output can be configured to meet the needs of the interpreter. This includes audio source selection, channel routing and sidetone (confidence) signal operation.

It’s also suitable for applications where low-profile or better line-of-sight over the surface is required.

Like its larger Argo siblings, each 12-fader-wide section is independent in terms of processing capabilities, path control access, power supplies and connectivity, meaning there is no reliance on any individual section. Argo is modular with interchangeable hardware panels and uses Calrec’s time-served Assist UI at its core.
