FUTURE CHAMPIONS
GOLF MAGAZINE Dear Junior Golf Community, The Future Champions Golf Digital Magazine launched in March 2021 and aims to become the leading junior golf publication worldwide. This is an exciting time in the game of golf as the sport is booming on all levels. In recent years, golf was really only growing in competitive golf but since the pandemic hit and people’s interests have changed, golf has become the game of choice for many. In each issue of the magazine, we have goals to inspire junior golfers and educate parents on the process of becoming a great player and more importantly, how to love the game. We think golf is so important for families and wish every family could golf together for a lifetime. As a parent, what more could you want than being able to spend several hours out on the golf course with your kids for a lifetime. We hope you enjoy our November issue. Should you have any feedback or interests for future issues, please let us know. Advertisers, please contact us for more information on how to be involved with our growing community. As always, we hope you play the game with passion, keep your head up high, walk with a purpose and enjoy your time outdoors playing golf. Chris Smeal President and Founder of Future Champions Golf Head Coach at the FCG Academy in Stadium Golf Center

How Good Are College Golfers? How good are college golfers? We will see that college golf is competitive at all levels. For junior golfers aspiring to play NCAA Division I, II, and III college golf, you need to be both a talented golfer and a conscientious student. Data tells us that there is a place in college golf for everyone--and it’s best to focus your efforts on the level that makes the most sense for your ability level. What level is that? What does the data say? I had some extra time during the spring of 2020. I examined the numbers required to play college golf at men’s and women’s programs in Division I, II, and III based on scores from the COVID-shortened 2019-2020 season. College golf gets more and more competitive every year, and the data from 63 teams confirms this. College golf competitions typically are scored by counting the best four scores from the five players who compete in the tournament. Scoring averages from the top eight players should give you a frame of reference for what it takes to make the lineup on a college team. Remember that college golf is often played in suboptimal weather conditions during months where courses may not be in the best shape in most parts of the country (September-November and February-May) so your junior golf scores will not directly translate into college scores in most cases. What about roster sizes? The data from our sample tells us that men’s golf teams have larger roster sizes across the board (Division I: 10, Division II: 9.1, Division III: 10.45). Women’s rosters are smaller which often leads to higher scholarship offers since the total number of scholarships for a fully-funded Division I women’s golf program is higher than the total number on the men’s side. Women’s rosters in the sample averaged around 8 (Division I: 8.5, Division II: 7.22, Division III: 7.22). What scholarship opportunities can I expect? Here’s a chart for the scholarship allotments at the various NCAA, NAIA, and NJCAA. Not all programs are fully funded. While Division III does not offer athletic scholarships; the NCAA reported that 80% of student-athletes earned academic grants or need-based scholarships averaging $17,000 in aid in 2018..
Get good grades so that you can qualify for merit scholarships. Retaking your ACT/SAT to earn a higher score may unlock a few thousand dollars depending on which school you will be attending, and it’s best to be in communication with your future college coach so that you understand what benchmarks you need to reach in order to qualify for the next academic scholarship tier.

FCG NOR CAL CHAMPIONSHIP November 28-29, 2021 // Register Here >
Poppy Hills Golf Club Pebble Beach, CA By Dean Gregory – November 10, 2021
On Thanksgiving weekend junior golfers will converge to Poppy Hills Golf Club for the 6th Annual FCG World Series NorCal Championship. They will be traveling from not only all of the western states, but also Canada and as far as Indonesia as well. This will be the fourth year that this Robert Trent Jones Jr. gem will be the host venue which has also been host to other major tours and events for the PGA Tour, PGA Champions Tour, USGA and NCAA. Located in the Del Monte Forest of Pebble Beach, CA, the tree-lined Poppy Hills Golf Club is the proud home course of the Northern California Golf Association. Opening in 1986 it quickly became one of the most go-to golf destinations for golfers of all levels on the
Monterey Peninsula. In 2013, Poppy Hills Golf Club went through a renovation that made it firm, fast and fun for golfers. But more importantly, it has become more environmentally more efficient. By eliminating the rough and introducing waste areas it reduced water use by 25%. The result after the reopening, one of the most beautiful green golf courses in the water drought stricken Northern California. Golf Digest has recognized Poppy Hills Golf Club as a Top 100 U.S Public Golf Club in 2017-2018 and 20182019 editions. So, if you’re in Monterey and looking to play a true championship course that’s affordable, Poppy Hills Golf Club should be on your list.

Smeal’s Coaching Tips 10 TIPS FOR HIGH SCHOOL GOLFERS
1
HAVE 2 WARM UP ROUTINES PRIOR TO MATCHES a. One for when you have plenty of time to warm-up b. One for short time to warm up
2
ALWAYS BE PREPARED THE DAY BEFORE FOR YOUR NEXT MATCH a. Balls, tees, Marker, Ball Markers, Rain Gear if needed, gloves, etc b. Check out the course online if you haven’t played it
3
MATCHES ARE SPRINTS NOT MARATHONS a. No Big Numbers – You don’t have enough time to recover b. Simple Mistakes so Bogey is worse score on a hole c. Don’t take a risk unless the risk will get you a full shot better on the hole d. Simple System for Scoring i. Go low on the Par 5s and Short Par 4s ii. Play to center of green on long par 4’s and par 3’s and make routine pars
4
LEAVE THE SCHOOL WORK AND THE SOCIAL TIME IN THE CLUBHOUSE a. It’s very easy in matches to get distracted by what you have to do for homework still and other social stuff that clouds your brain from playing your best. Make a to-do list on the way to the course for what you need to do after the round and put it somewhere. Focus on Golf while you are golfing and then focus on the other / stuff after.
5
ON THE RANGE a. Find Your Swing and Ball Flight Pattern for the Day b. Build Confidence in a Swing and Feeling c. Practice the Opening Tee Shot d. Work on Shots you will have to hit during the round e. Good players always work on rhythm, timing, balance, and grip pressure.
Chris Smeal, PGA Founder of Future Champions Golf 619.339.2377 chrissmeal@gmail.com

6
ON THE PUTTING GREEN a. Get Your Speed DIALED IN from long and short range. Needs to be automatic. b. Make Thirty 3-Footers for drilled consistent practice c. Practice some tough breaking putts with full routine. Notice your misses and adjust accordingly. Sometime its as simple as playing more break on your left to right putts.
7
ON THE CHIPPING GREEN a. Practice Basic Chips and Hard Pitches i. Get your feel down ii. Its all in the hands (softer the better)
8
BREATHE AND RELAX a. All the best players still get nervous. High School golf is a great time to work on this stuff. Practice deep breathing before you tee off and throughout the round. You want to play all your rounds calm like awalk in the park.
9
GRIND IT OUT a. The up and down you make on hole 2 might be the shot that wins you the match so pay attention and finish each hole with all of your willpower.
10
HAVE FUN! a. Golf is a game! You will always play better when it is fun. Be organized, be prepared, but have fun while you play. Unnecessary tension is EVIL! PREPARED FOR YOU!

BIG BROTHERS By Dennis Murphy
Joe Feminella is currently a 22-year-old Friends of Jaclyn (FOJ) adoptee (adopted at 12 years old) has an amazing relationship with his Stony Brook University (SBU) football team. He has lived for N.E.D. (No Evidence of Disease) almost his entire life. Looking at Joe you wouldn’t be able to picture what the last 17 years of his life have looked like--he’s courageous, brave, and loves football. He makes time for his friends, works, goes to school and loves to golf. A normal 22 year old... except slightly more exceptional! On August 13, 2004, at the age of 5, Joe’s life was changed forever when he was diagnosed with a cancerous brain tumor (medulloblastoma--the same tumor Jaclyn herself was diagnosed with). This health crisis sidelined Joe from what was a normal childhood to one filled with doctors, radiation/chemo, and physical and emotional struggles. Over the next few years, Joe had to fight medulloblastoma with the help and support of his family and friends. In the spring of 2009, Joe was adopted by the Stony Brook University (SBU) Football team. Immediately after meeting his new “team,” Joe realized that he had an amazing support system of 80 big brothers to help him through his challenges. Joe lived each week to get to practice and games during the fall and cheer for his team. The team was Joe’s extended family with the football program embracing Joe and his family with love, support & friendship. A family never knows the obstacles they are up against when they are faced with the fight of their lives, and oftentimes their child’s social life isn’t a priority. Anyone who has been ill or has had a cancer diagnosis can attest to the power of
12
friendship and distraction, and Friends of Jaclyn offered that to Joe as he made his way through his diagnosis and treatment. Head football coach Chuck Priore has run out of the tunnel with Joe, hand in hand, for over 12 years. Coach will always say “Joe is the team’s lucky charm” as they have won five championship rings since his adoption and have upgraded to the CAA football conference. Ironically, Joe thinks he is actually the lucky one and as he quoted once “the best part of my brain tumor was I got this team.” Joe has travelled all over the country with his many teammates and has only missed a handful of games in over a decade. The motto of FOJ is “Live in the Moment, Play in the Moment” and Joe and his family have done just that. Of the over 960 adoptions that Friends of Jaclyn has orchestrated over the last 15 years Joe’s is absolutely one of the most solid, and that is a testament to the leadership on the football team and at Stony Brook. Athletic Director Shawn Heilbron has made it part of his mission to help children in partnership with Friends of Jaclyn and has encouraged other coaches at the school to adopt kids in order to provide them with the same support that Joe has received from the football team. To date, Stony Brook has had children adopted to their volleyball, men’s basketball, men’s lacrosse and swim teams. Leadership is from the top down and it shows as all of the teams that have adopted have been under the watchful eye of Mr. Heilbron, to whom FOJ is forever grateful. When Joe arrived at middle school and was feeling healthier, he decided to pursue golf during the spring
& summer when football was not in season. He picked up golf with his dad and he became hooked. In high school, Joe was the manager for his school varsity golf team. Today he continues to play golf with his cousin and enjoys the annual father’s day golf outing with family. Interestingly, some of the football coaches also golf in the off-season so there is always something to talk about on the sidelines. Joe even helped at annual SBU spring golf outings and was able to reunite with some former players at the events. After high school, Joe started working at SBU athletic equipment room thanks to A.D. Shawn Heilbron and Coach Chuck. This job has given Joe so many life lessons and has let him work at the place that he loves with the people that he loves. Staff members and student athletes are great examples of NEDvocates as their support for Joe has helped him stay positive throughout his journey. Joe has even been a NEDvocate for some of the student athletes at SBU as his fight has been such an inspiration to the entire SBU campus community, not just the football team. Joe’s connection with the football team and his willingness to share his story have helped others realize they are not alone and they might also be able to live a fulfilling life doing something they love. Recently, unfortunately, Joe has received some devastating news. The cancer treatment he endured 16 years ago has caused a secondary blood disorder requiring a stem cell transplant. His days of living No Evidence of Disease are over and we are back in the fight. However, it is still SBU football season so their biggest fan, Joe, is watching closely. Proud to say that this team has embraced him with so much love and some great football wins. Joe’s family says, “we live in a world where NED is what we breathe and we pray that we will be celebrating another fall football season and spring golf tournaments as Joe continues to fight.”

FCG FAQ’s At various tournaments throughout the year, the FCG staff will be asked these common questions.
ABOUT FCG How many tournaments does Future Champions Golf hold a year? FCG holds over 100 events across the western states and Texas. This includes three major tournaments, The FCG International, FCG Callaway World Championship and the year-end, FCG National Championship. **Look for exciting news regarding the 2022 season coming out soon! Do college coaches follow FCG? FCG tournaments are a standard recruiting stop for a lot of coaches from Upper DI to DIII Men’s and Women’s teams. It’s not unusual to see over 80 coaches throughout the year at our events. We also email every college coach results of each and every event.
TOURNAMENT PLAY Why doesn’t FCG use “Live Scoring”? Quite simply, we want players to be focused on playing their best. We have found that with current Live Scoring systems in use that utilize cell phones, players have been distracted by texts, social media or even gaming. In some cases players have been coached by texts during play. The yardage that you set up at the tournaments are not the same as they are on the website. Why? The yardages that are posted on the website are there to give the player a general estimate of how long the course will be playing for their division. Part of the development of the junior golfer is having the skill of being able to think and to make adjustments of the given situations. There are many factors that go into the difference of yardages. Here are a few examples: - Basic course maintenance, on a day-to-day basis the course will change the tee area to prevent wear and tear of the tee box. - The tournament committee may change some tees to challenge the players or if some holes will affect pace of play. - The environment will also play a big part. For ex ample if the wind is blowing 30 mph into the player the hole will play longer. If it’s a downwind, the hole will play shorter. Do you set the pins for the tournament? We do not set pins. Instead we allow the course to do so. Courses generally use the formula of six easy, six medium and six hard. We want the course to play as close as we can to what it is rated for. The 12 & under divisions are usually allowed caddies. But why are the caddies not allowed on the
34
putting green? We want the player to develop the skill of putting on their own. Unfortunately, when the caddy is on the green with the player, more often than not, the caddy will be involved in the shot more than the player. What do the initials that are sometimes shown on the leaderboard mean? The initials are to designate the status of a player that was part of a tournament. “JWD” - Justified Withdrawn: A player who is registered to play in a tournament but notifies the committee before the start of the tournament that they will not be playing. “WD” - Withdrawn: When a player has completed their first round and opts not to play the second round. “NC” - No Card: When a player decides not to complete play after starting their round. “DQ” - Disqualification: When a registered player does not show for the tournament without prior notification. Also, a player may be disqualified for an infraction under Rules of Golf.

BOYS COLLEGE PREP
= Class of 2023 His parents should have named him, Eddie. It would be fitting considering how steady Nathan is with his golf game. Every tournament he plays he always finds himself in the mix with a either a win or a top finish. But at the FCG National Tour SD County Classic, he found himself out of the mix. He ended up all alone at the top by shooting 67 & 66, 133 (-11) for the back-to-back years championship win. The dominating performance earns the October FCG Player of the Month award.
GIRLS COLLEGE PREP
Pimmada (Nena) Wongthanavimok Class of 2022 Come fall of 2022, Nena will have something in common with Annika Sorenstam, Lorena Ochoa, and Haley Moore. She will become a University of Arizona Wildcat. Coming from Thailand and playing in her first FCG tournament in 2021, she manages to take the championship at the 13th Annual FCG Central Coast World Series tournament by posting 66 & 67, 133(-11). Keeping her next competitor away by 4-strokes earns her the right of October FCG Player of the Month.

The Last Thought REFLECTIONS OF THANKS By Dean Gregory, November 8, 2021 As we approach the second anniversary of the beginning of the global pandemic that changed everyone’s life, I can’t help but to reflect on how the journey to be where we are today was a long one. Life was full of uncertainty for the future, it turned out dismal, depressing, and hopeless for many across the world. But luckily because of the great sport of golf, 2020 turned out to be a busy year for FCG. Which in turn, a busy year for me personally as well. When 2021 arrived, the world was well on its way of mending and slowly but surely getting back to normal. With the vaccination becoming available, more and more people started to take it. Restrictions started to loosen. Many restaurants started to reopen, first with outdoor seating moving to being able to eat indoors. People started to go back to work, as evidenced by the amount of traffic on the freeways. Professional sports got their fans back in stadiums. The golf tours allowed spectators to watch their favorite golfers. Which brings me to how the golf industry has just boomed over the past year. Golf courses were seeing record number of golfers playing. It wasn’t hard to go to your local course or driving range and see what was, the most popular set of golf clubs, the Strata starter set. Golf remained the one constant that everyone gravitated to because that was the one place you could be outdoors, get exercise, and most importantly, gather and socialize with family and friends. Junior golfers also took advantage of working on their games. For many, since they were still Zooming their way through school, they had a lot more time to be able to practice and play, which made competition at tournaments tighter. Parents and players still had hope but with a feeling of uncertainty for the future. College coaches couldn’t recruit until mid-summer. But even with recruiting being able to start, it was also complicated. College players that were seniors during the shutdown were given the opportunity to play one more year. Most coaches had the tough job of trying to balance the amount of incoming freshman players they could recruit. Fortunately though, with the National Signing Week about to begin, I’m proud to say and know a lot of the FCG players that will become FCG Alumni at the second half of the year 2022 to start the next level of their playing career. So as the holiday season fast approaches with Thanksgiving Day right around the corner, I find there is a lot to be thankful for. But instead of boring everyone with a long list, I will just simply say: I am thankful for returning to normalcy and knowing that the future will be successful and bright for all of the juniors who play this wonderful game!
