FUTURE CHAMPIONS GOLF MAGAZINE

Dear Junior Golf Community,

It’s hard to believe this is already our 20th year operating Future Champions Golf programs and the start of our 16th full year hosting multi day golf tournaments. Thank you all for your support of the Tour and the programs that we offer. 2023 looks to be an exciting year of growth on all levels of the Tour. We are expanding Tournament Operations in other regions of the United States. We have partnered with more than 30 other tours around the world for qualifying events to bring the best players in the world to the 15th Annual FCG Callaway World Junior Golf Championship that will be played July 17-19, 2023. We are excited to announce this year’s event will feature 850 junior golfers ages 7-18 from over 50 countries and will be played on 12 Championship Golf Courses. We will also have a new host hotel for this year’s event.

Other exciting things to note is the return of all of our FCG World Series Events with several new events including an event at the #1 course in Arkansas. We have established the FCG Iconic Ocean Series that will feature our best world series events held at courses along the ocean. Stay tuned for more about that exciting event.

Also this year we are starting the FCG International Team Championship that will be played a few days prior to the start of the FCG International Championship. Did you know the FCG international is the largest annual OPEN event in junior golf? This means you can just sign up and play in one of the world’s largest and most exciting world events in junior golf. You do however need to meet the scoring requirements listed on the website.

There is so much more to talk about but we will announce more in future emails and on our blog and social media. Stay connected with us on the blog, here in our monthly magazine, and our new podcast which kicks off later this month again for 2023! If you have any questions or comments please contact us anytime. 15TH ANNUAL FCG MEMORIAL CHAMPIONSHIP

May 6-7, 2023 // Register Here >

Indian Canyons Golf Resort

This long-standing golf resort originally opened in 1961 under the name Canyon Country Club and it was the only 18-hole course at the time. And since Palm Springs was a popular winter getaway for Hollywood celebrities, so was the club. Bob Hope, Johnny Carson, Jack Benny and Jackie Gleason were among the stars that could be found knocking the ball around the fairways. Even the leaders of “The Rat Pack”, Frank, Dino and Sammy were regulars. It was also the go to place for Presidents Johnson and Ford. Nearly 60 years after its opening the name changed to Indian Canyons Golf Resort as the Agua Caliente band of Cahuilla Indians acquired the master lease of the courses.

Indian Canyons Golf Resorts consists of two courses. The North Course designed by William F. Bell is the original course since the opening. It’s a par-72 that plays to 6,943 yards. You’ll find six water hazards with

a lake that sits in between the 9th and 18th holes which features a fountain that shoots water over 100 feet into the air. The South Course, which was added across the street years later plays to 6,582 yards with five par 5’s and four ponds.

The resort has hosted notable celebrity charity tournaments such as the Frank Sinatra Invitational, Howard Cosell’s Day and the Chuck Connors Invitational. But come May 6 & 7, 2023, it will play host to the 15th Annual FCG Memorial Championship. It will be a chance to walk and play where the Hollywood Royalty, Sports Superstars, Presidents and Vice-Presidents of the past have graced the fairways and greens.

Smeal’s Coaching Tips

ARE YOU BUILDING YOURSELF UP OR DOWN THROUGH GOLF?

Becoming a great golfer requires a constant leveling up of your mindset to be able to handle the higher levels of competition. As you begin your journey with golf you first just play because it is a fun thing to do, or maybe you enjoy playing with your friends or family. At some point though that journey becomes competitive and this is a beautiful thing if you handle it right. Many don’t and the purpose of this article is to help you along this journey to see things differently and enhance your mindset. You will fail. You will think you have this game completely figured out and then you will be taken back a notch. This is life and this is golf and how you handle these moments is important.

that night or the next day and write down everything about the day. From how you woke up, to what you ate, to the interactions you had with other people that day, to your outlook of the course and conditions. Write it all down and see what you could have improved on. Then talk it out with someone who understands what going down this journey is like. I promise the right one’s will have a lot of positive things to say about the experience and then there should be some very specific things you need to tackle before your next experience. This is how you learn and this is how you build yourself up through golf. Golf is hard sometimes and even the best players fail.

I don’t want all my players to start competing and win everything. You will not learn as much unless you learn how to handle both the ups and the downs of golf and life. So as you go down this journey please have a mentor who understands the process of becoming a great player and/ or someone that understands the journey towards success at anything in life. If you are constantly feeling judged by those in your circle you likely could be setting yourself up for more failure and an inability to perform because of all these extra comments and pressures.

Your circle should include the people that build you up and understand that you are on a journey that they are not on. Some days you will not have your best game and it may be at the time you needed it the most. Did you learn from this day of failure? Who did you talk to after your round? Do you feel better the next day? Do you know how to look at this experience in a positive way?

Try this: The next time you have a bad experience or feel you didn’t perform your best, wait until later

I hope your junior golf journey is the most positive and uplifting life experience as a youth. I hope you become a stronger person via golf to handle other challenges in life. I hope you love the game, your friends, and your family and your coaches along the way. If we all become stronger together we will all succeed.

Opportunity is abundant and let’s get after it in 2023!

Thank you for reading!

DARE TO DREAM

FCG golfer’s hone their skills and chase their dreams on some of the most incredible real estate around the world. Witnessing the competition first hand up close and seeing the strong personal desire of many of these young golfer’s is beyond inspiring. Observing the growth and development of each age group, handling their academic load, travel and competition is a classic example of exceeding expectations of time management skills. The process each young golfer goes through to compete at each FCG tournament prepares them for the next level while having “fun” playing the “game of golf”. The dream for many parents is to see their daughter or son play at the next level-college and even aspire to be one of the 1%er’s and play professionally. Dare to Dream!

Meet James Rushton, who has lived the dream of attending one of the finest academic institutions in the country University of Pennsylvania and fulfilled a dream of his and his parents of playing D1 soccer. James never thought his education and experience playing D1 soccer would afford him the opportunity to meet a young boy who would have an impact on his life. A life changing experience that he could not realize in the classroom or on the soccer field.

“I met Tanner seven years ago after Friends of Jaclyn matched him with the University of Pennsylvania men’s soccer team. As happy as I was to have him join the team, I could not help thinking in the back of my mind how sad it was that this child was battling brain cancer. However, you would not have been able to tell that during our first meeting. He was shy at first during the “press conference” announcing his arrival before opening up during a game of kickball, running around

and talking excitedly to this group of young men who were listening intently and laughing along at everything that this inspiring child had to say to us. Right away, he was one of us. Tanner and his family attended all our home games as well as a few practices that season. I would play with Tanner and his sister before the games, who helped warm me up and even tie my shoes before each match.

That season was only the beginning of our relationship with Tanner and his family. Just as he supported us at our soccer games, we attended one of his hockey games to support him, and the whole team surprised him in the hospital one time when he was receiving treatment. In my last semester of college, I spent time with Tanner and his family at the hospital every two weeks during Tanner’s regular visits to Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, where I saw firsthand the battle that not only Tanner was fighting, but the whole family. When I returned to Philadelphia for the first time after I graduated, I got dinner with him and his family. And when I got married last April, they drove all the way from New Jersey to Texas to attend. To this day, I speak on the phone with Tanner every few months and know I will get a birthday call from him.

While Friends of Jaclyn was set up to help support children with cancer, my life has been forever changed by my connection with Tanner and his family and the lessons that they taught me. I learned about how to live through trauma, making the most of circumstances and allowing for sadness but not being controlled by sadness. I learned about the strength of the human spirit, especially when connected with others. And I learned about the role of family when a child is fighting a serious illness. While Tanner was the star of the show, his family all played incredibly important roles and touched me in different but just as profound ways. I am so proud of Tanner and his family, and I feel so lucky to count them as lifelong friends”.

James has demonstrated that being a NEdvocate, doesn’t necessarily come from a text book, but form the heart. Cancer affects the whole family, the smiles on Tanner face and his whole family puts it all into perspective. When James and Tanner get together, the quality of life is instantly improved and there is nothing the beast can do about it. Infectious as Tanner is, James being a NEDvocate demonstrates the heart is a powerful instrument to have in the bag!

ABOUT THE ELITE INVITATIONAL

The Elite Invitational was founded in 2020 by Mason Carmel. A former standout junior golfer, Mason is now a teaching professional instructing junior, collegiate, and professional golfers worldwide. After injuries prevented Mason from pursuing a playing career of his own, he wanted to give back to the game he loves. Drawing on his own experiences, he created a high-level, invitational tournament. The event gives junior golfers the ability to showcase their skills in competitive conditions similar to those they will encounter as their careers progress. With a unique selection process based on a player’s graduating year instead of a player’s age, the tournament poses a different set of challenges than many other junior competitions. This highly ranked event will challenge the best around the world. By trying to emulate PGA/LPGA tour course set-ups, players will get a preview of the higher standard they will encounter as their careers develop and an opportunity to lay the foundation of their legacies. We look forward to hosting you and your family this November.

HOW TO GUARANTEE SUCCESS IN COLLEGE RECRUITING

THERE IS A PLACE FOR YOU TO PLAY COLLEGE GOLF IF YOU FOLLOW THESE THREE STEPS

1. Start with a large list of schools

Many families are surprised to learn that I recommend that their son or daughter should reach out to 50-60 schools to begin with. Depending on when they start the recruiting process, this recommended number could be smaller or larger. It’s important to realize that coaches are looking for players who will be a good fit for their programs and contribute right away so they will likely prioritize getting back to players who are shooting the numbers to replace the players in their lineup (top 5-6 players) right now.

2. Be realistic about the types of programs you can play for

Coaches are evaluated year-to-year on their team’s performance. Some coaches are in more pressure-filled positions than others; however, most coaches want to put together successful teams. In golf, success is measured, in large part, by numbers - low numbers to be exact.

At top-25 and even top-50 programs, a team’s lack of performance can mean that a coach will get fired. Just like in any profession, if a person is not doing their job, there will be consequences for their actions. Recruiting top talent that improves a team’s ranking is a vital component of what makes a team successful in the long term.

If you estimate that coaches will bring in two players each year, then a team ranked in the top-25 will be recruiting players who are somewhere in the top-50 in the world. Following that simple logic, a team ranked 100 would be recruiting players ranked in the top-200.

This is where I often find there to be a significant breakdown. Many junior golfers don’t have a realistic view of where their game is. They think of the best case scenario and how good they could be if they career it in every single tournament from this moment forward, and they

don’t think through the reality of where their game is in the present moment. I try so hard to deliver this type of feedback gingerly; however, it gets harder and harder each year as players ranked somewhere around 4,000 tell me that they want to play at Stanford. That is not a reality, and Stanford didn’t recruit me either. I had a great college golf playing career, and I truly was not meant for Stanford anyway. But it was their loss.

If you are struggling with reality and want to contact coaches at schools that are above your head, then you should also send emails to coaches at lesser-ranked colleges. See who is responding to you and make strategic decisions from there.

3. Personalize coach communications and clearly express interest

Coaches love when junior golfers show that they are paying attention to their season and have genuine interest in the university at large. I love hearing back from students who get positive feedback from coaches saying that they were impressed by their research.

Conversely, sending mass emails to coaches or messing up an email by addressing it to the wrong coach or mentioning the wrong program can have detrimental effects in your relationship with them.

Be thorough about your golf and academic accomplishments, but don’t write them a novel. In a first or second email to a coach, assume that you need to capture their attention and will continue to build this relationship over time. If a coach does not respond to you, then take a step back and ask yourself if you would contribute to their program. If you can honestly answer yes, then send them a few more updates. Coaches like to see continued interest over time and won’t always respond back to someone after the first or second emails.

BOYS COLLEGE PREP Drew Woolworth

Class of 2026

Coming down from Oregon to play in the 15th Annual FCG Western States almost felt like it was summer after a hard cold and wet winter at home. Taking full advantage of the calm conditions of both the weather and course, Drew posted a first round -5, 67. But even with going low, he still found himself 1-stroke back of fellow Oregonian Jake Rodgers. Going into the second round, he knew he couldn’t let up at all. Posting a -6, 66, Drew managed to take a one shot lead heading into the final round. He hung on shooting another -5, 67 to end up taking the championship by 3-strokes. Firing off -16 in three days, earns Drew the right to be named February’s FCG Player of the Month.

GIRLS COLLEGE PREP Anna Song

Class of 2025

The FCG National Tour Temecula Championship was only the second full event for the Girls College Prep division in 2023. With the unsettling weather that hit and miss on the west coast in January and February, Anna played with more “hit” than “miss”. Shooting a -1, 71 in the first round was good enough for to take the overnight lead by one stroke. With scores tight at the top, she went into the second round knowing she would need to play like she did in the previous round if not better. And better she did. Anna started the second round at +1 in her first six holes. Then it hit… birdies on 7, 8 and 9 to make the turn at 34, 2 under on the front. She never looked back at that point. Finishing off her final round with another birdie on the back, Anna posted a -3, 69. Giving her a 2-day total 140, -4 for the tournament. Six strokes better than the runner-up, she secured her championship. Anna’s consistent dominant win, earns her the right to claim the title of the February FCG Player of the Month.

WHERE DID THE SKILLS GO?

The game of golf has evolved. Players are hitting the ball longer and straighter. A par 72 course has become to be an easy attainable number. It’s not unusual to see a player on a 370-yard par 4 hit driver and use a wedge for their second shot. Many par 5’s are reachable in two. More and more I see players going under par for a round. A score of 59 has always been, since the birth of the game a mythical number to obtain. But since 2010, there have been eight players on tour who achieved this feat. Of course, there was Jim Furyk’s record-setting 58 in 2016.

Personally, it really isn’t much fun to watch the PGA Tour. With scores -18, -19 or -23, I feel like the players aren’t challenged enough. But it’s become the norm. I know the Tour says birdies sell. That’s what people want to see. I beg to differ with that philosophy. I would rather see players struggle to achieve those scores.

They say the reason fans go to watch NASCAR, is to see the crashes. If you think about it, if you watch cars drive around an oval a hundred times without any mishaps, how exciting would that really be. I would imagine most of you say, “That’s no fun to watch”. At least in golf, the majors can still challenge the tour pro. Especially with a tough U.S. Open setup and the 4-day total scores are in single digits, you know the players had to scratch and grind. I feel that’s what the average amateur golfer really wants to see. It somehow helps in the healing process when they think about their own games.

So how can we make the game challenging and exciting? It’s not feasible to lengthen courses. Players are already trying to perfect in obtaining the perfect swing. Golfers have become stronger. Technology of equipment is pretty well maxed out with their regulations.

The fact is equipment has developed to a point where it does make the game easier. Clubs are more forgiving. Materials, weighting and design have all attributed to this. Whether it’s clubs or balls, the only thing that golf manufacturers really care about is that “distance” sells their equipment. There are balls that have low spin to give you extra roll. Drivers are designed to achieve the same thing. Irons are all strong lofted. Pitching wedges that have the same loft as what 9-irons used to be. Why? So, you can buy more wedges. But do they really help you become a better player? Can you really develop the skills to be a top player? I feel that most golf equipment doesn’t necessarily make you develop your skill as a golfer, it just masks your flaws.

Maybe the answer is to roll back some of the regulations that manufacturers use to make equipment. For example, in just the past few days, the USGA has proposed that golf balls can only fly a total distance of 317 yards, +/- 3 yards for pro and top amateur events. Which means ball manufacturers will need to develop a special ball to meet those expectations. This proposal falls right in with what 18-time major champion Jack Nicklaus as been talking about for years. Create a spec ball to be used by the tour so it at least closes the gap of distances.

Hopefully this will make players develop more skills that seemed to have gone away over time.
