FUTURE CHAMPIONS GOLF MAGAZINE

Dear Junior Golf Community,

It’s hard to believe this is already our 20th year operating Future Champions Golf programs and the start of our 16th full year hosting multi day golf tournaments. Thank you all for your support of the Tour and the programs that we offer. 2023 looks to be an exciting year of growth on all levels of the Tour. We are expanding Tournament Operations in other regions of the United States. We have partnered with more than 30 other tours around the world for qualifying events to bring the best players in the world to the 15th Annual FCG Callaway World Junior Golf Championship that will be played July 17-19, 2023. We are excited to announce this year’s event will feature 850 junior golfers ages 7-18 from over 50 countries and will be played on 12 Championship Golf Courses. We will also have a new host hotel for this year’s event.

Other exciting things to note is the return of all of our FCG World Series Events with several new events including an event at the #1 course in Arkansas. We have established the FCG Iconic Ocean Series that will feature our best world series events held at courses along the ocean. Stay tuned for more about that exciting event.

Also this year we are starting the FCG International Team Championship that will be played a few days prior to the start of the FCG International Championship. Did you know the FCG international is the largest annual OPEN event in junior golf? This means you can just sign up and play in one of the world’s largest and most exciting world events in junior golf. You do however need to meet the scoring requirements listed on the website.

There is so much more to talk about but we will announce more in future emails and on our blog and social media. Stay connected with us on the blog, here in our monthly magazine, and our new podcast which kicks off later this month again for 2023! If you have any questions or comments please contact us anytime. We want to be your favorite junior golf and college golf program.

Palmilla Golf Club

Future Champions Golf Tour history will be made starting June 3, 2022. Palmilla Golf Club will host the INAUGURAL FCG CABO WORLD SERIES. This event will be the first World Series tournament outside of the United States.

The 3-day World Amateur Ranked event will be played on 2 of the 3 nine-hole courses at Palmilla Golf Club, Arroyo and Mountain. Along with the aforementioned, the Ocean course completes Palmilla which is recognized as the “Grand Dame of Los Cabos golf”, the first Jack Nicklaus Signature designed course in Latin America. You will find towering cacti, deep arroyos and breathtaking views of the Sea of Cortez. Players of every skill level will find lush fairways, immaculate greens that will challenge you. To add to

the excitement of the game Jack Nicklaus added to the design utilizing the natural landscape, four lakes and deep shifts of elevation.

Having been named a Top 100 Course by Golfweek and Conde’ Nast Palmilla Golf Club is more than just golf. Along with the course is the One & Only Resort that can truly make your Mexico golf adventure magical. Surrounded by shimmering sands and swaying palm trees, the luxury resort sits along the azure coastline of the Sea of Cortez featuring many activities that allows you to enjoy the blended culture of new and old Mexico. So if you are planning a golf vacation then consider visiting Palmilla Golf Club in San Jose del Cabo.

Smeal’s Coaching Tips

ARE YOU FIRING ON ALL CYLINDERS?

As we head into summer your goal should be to be firing on all cylinders starting at the end of May prior to all the big events. Summer is the time to score your best and use what you have been working on to score low. Then in late August or early September you can analyze how all the events went during summer and make a plan for further improvement when you head into the Fall months. So what does it mean to be firing on all cylinders?

SWING MECHANICS ARE SOLIDIFIED

You know your swing keys, your checkpoints, and it’s working. So you feel confident that your swing will work under pressure.

SHORT GAME IS SHARP BECAUSE YOU HAVE BEEN PUTTING IN THE WORK. You can get up and down from anywhere. No challenge is too difficult and you love the opportunity to hit a hard shot under pressure.

PUTTING IS DIALED IN

You have your feels, you are getting the ball started on line every time. You have your daily go to drills and you have a prep routine for each tournament you are going to play.

MENTAL GAME IS SHARP

You have no doubts, worries, or fears. You are looking forward to competing and you are not going to overreact to bad shots. Everyone hits bad shots but how you react is key.

These are just some of the ways you should feel good about your game as you head into summer. Any questions please contact me: 619-339-2377 or chrissmeal@gmail.com

Thank you for reading!

IMPACTING LIVES

To all the parents sacrificing the endless travel, logging hours watching rounds at weekend FCG tournaments, all to ensure their children get the opportunities to pursue their dreams. They reap the rewards watching thier children develop their game, but the big dividends pay off when they make a difference off the course and impact lives. There is nothing more rewarding than seeing the sacrifice, dedication and commitment invested in your children pay off in your children’s character and success on the links and in life. To have them be productive and make a difference in other people’s lives would make any parent be proud. Doesn’t really matter what sport they play, it’s how they take the life lessons the sport has afforded them and how they apply them productively in life.

Meet Peter and Hayden Hollen, siblings from San Diego. These two “Nedvocates” have made an impact on so many lives in a short time they have walked on this planet. Their story is a tribute to their parents and the investment they made on and off the lacrosse fields growing up in Torrey Pines. My parents have raised me and my siblings (6), always telling us “children are a direct reflection of their parents”. A big shout out to Mr. and Mrs. Hollen-THANK YOU! Here is a little piece of these two siblings shining their bright lights making a difference in this world! Take it away Peter and Hayden:

In a manner similar to sports, Jaclyn Murphy and her family’s story have the power to transcend the here and now. In the moments we are blessed to listen to Jaclyn, or her father Denis, beaming with love and pride, we are reminded that no disease, torrent of adversity or chapter of sorrow can overcome the

power of hope. We are reminded to keep moving forward, to rise up and transcend what we choose to define as our restraints and obstacles – just as Jaclyn, the Murphy family and thousands of kids do every single day in the fight against pediatric cancer.

Along with many others whose lives have been changed by the Friends of Jaclyn Foundation, Peter Hollen and his family’s trajectory was changed forever by the hope he was introduced to in Jaclyn and Denis. Whether he knew it or not at that moment, the Hollens were beginning a ten year journey with the organization that he hopes will continue far into the future.

Bolstered by Jono Zissi’s Torrey Pines Lacrosse Program’s commitment to community action and FOJ’s tireless pursuit of its mission, Peter has participated in multiple FOJ adoptions in his highschool and collegiate athletic career. First, as a member of the TPHS lacrosse team in 2013, Peter became teammates with Jose Montano , or “Angel Chancho.” Chancho and his teammates laughed together, cried together, triumphed together and lost together – as Peter recounted – “as teammates, as friends and as brothers.” From the moment Jose introduced himself in a shirt that read “the more we give, the less we need,” to sports fields and to the halls of the hospital, Peter continued to watch the spirit of FOJ grow in Jose. One of those defining moments being Jose’s choice to transcend his own personal battles with “the monster” to use his Make-A-Wish grant not for his own benefit, but to build a playground at his elementary school for other kids to enjoy long into the future. The hope he sewed is remembered in Berry Elementary, the TPHS lacrosse uniform and the lives of his teammates.

That same hope is what inspired Peter and the University of Southern California Men’s Lacrosse team to continue in this tradition and adopt Aiden Zea and his family. Similar friendship and moments of joy were cultivated. In his young years, Aiden’s wisdom reminded the team to never stop learning and to smile each and every day. As Peter said, “I cannot find any excuse in this world not to smile everyday as I watch Aiden find joy in each single moment.”Peter continues to have relationships with both families and serves as a Sports Ambassador for FOJ as he seeks to support the organization’s mission. Peter’s brothers, Henry and Porter, have also played key roles in the fostering of FOJ’s mission at Torrey Pines High School.

I have been exposed and blessed to meet some incredible human beings on this journey. From all walks of life, cancer knows no zip code and doesn’t discriminate. We met Stacia Boyton at a cancer event in Mass after Jaclyn was diagnosed with her malign brain tumor. After meeting her parents Matt and Suzanne, I knew why she was different from all her other peers at her age. There is a saying in our cancer community, “Get’s it”! Stacia demonstrated she “Get’s it” by her actions. Blessed to have Stacia on our journey improving the quality of life for children battling the beast.

“In the year 2007, I developed a newfound passion for working with children living with brain tumors. My passion was sparked when I met a young girl named Jaclyn Murphy and learned more about her family’s mission. I have spent many years working to help grow this foundation through volunteer and then ultimately became a member of the foundations team. During this time worked with hundreds of families from around the world addressing the fears and traumas they faced

I worked closely with these families to help create a therapeutic healing process. Having this experience helped me to understand how challenging it is to live with childhood cancer. In conjunction to dealing with the effects of a brain injury, and how it impacts the entire family. During this time working at Friends of Jaclyn I was in awe at how many different medical professionals, doctors’ visits, and supports families living with cancer encounter during a diagnosis of a young one. I would spend hours on the phone each week talking with parents, coaches, and kids in the foundation working to understand the needs and supports that would be beneficial for families. What I learned during this process is there is no s tandard because each family has its unique needs. After leaving the foundation I went back to school to earn my Master’s Degree as a Mental Health Counselor with a Specialization in Expressive Arts Therapy at Lesley University. During my educational process I focused on how to use art, music, dance, drama, and play to support kids and families. This expanded my understanding of how trauma affects the brain, body, and family system.

Since becoming an expressive arts therapist I have worked in a variety of settings including after school, inpatient mental health, group and outpatient. I recently opened my own Expressive Arts Studio in Humarock, MA to continue sharing the gifts that the expressive arts modalities provide. Using these modalities offers an opportunity to engage in a creative process to increase one’s ability to connect, create, and regulate. Empowering kiddos to gain mastery in new ways that create sparkly eyed moments, creative expression, and how to regulate their nervous systems not only supports them but also the family. As I continue to grow the studio I hope to provide increased education on the expressive arts, regulation strategies, and honoring my role as a forever Nedvocate. I look forward to welcoming families living with cancer to my studio while also raising awareness on a small community scale”.

Actions do speak louder than words, Stacia Boyton-NEDvocate has proactively changed many children’s lives at such a young age with her actions.

ABOUT THE ELITE INVITATIONAL

The Elite Invitational was founded in 2020 by Mason Carmel. A former standout junior golfer, Mason is now a teaching professional instructing junior, collegiate, and professional golfers worldwide. After injuries prevented Mason from pursuing a playing career of his own, he wanted to give back to the game he loves. Drawing on his own experiences, he created a high-level, invitational tournament. The event gives junior golfers the ability to showcase their skills in competitive conditions similar to those they will encounter as their careers progress. With a unique selection process based on a player’s graduating year instead of a player’s age, the tournament poses a different set of challenges than many other junior competitions. This highly ranked event will challenge the best around the world. By trying to emulate PGA/LPGA tour course set-ups, players will get a preview of the higher standard they will encounter as their careers develop and an opportunity to lay the foundation of their legacies. We look forward to hosting you and your family this November.

PLAYER of the month

March 2023

All winners will receive $100 gift card to use at www.UnderPar.com

BOYS COLLEGE PREP Nicholas Davis

Class of 2025

In March, Nicholas played in two events and found himself with a win and a 2nd Place finish. At the end of round 1 at the FCG National Tour Coastal Challenge, Nicholas was in a 3-way tie for the lead after posting an even par, 71. Holding off the tough field in the final round, he shot a +1, 72, for a 2-day total 143. Good enough for the win by one stroke. Next stop, the desert. Playing in the FCG National Tour Palm Springs Open, Nicholas shot an even par 71. This put him in 5th place and two shots off the lead. Knowing he had to go low if he had a chance to take the win. Posting a -2, 69 in the second round for a total score of 140. Putting up a valiant effort he still ended 3-strokes behind the leader. But it still was good enough to take solo 2nd place. This consistent play earns Nicholas the title of FCG Boys Player of the Month for March

GIRLS COLLEGE PREP Kiley Reisner

Class of 2025

The FCG National Tour Temecula Championship was only the second full event for the Girls College Prep division in 2023. With the unsettling weather that hit and miss on the west coast in January and February, Anna played with more “hit” than “miss”. Shooting a -1, 71 in the first round was good enough for to take the overnight lead by one stroke. With scores tight at the top, she went into the second round knowing she would need to play like she did in the previous round if not better. And better she did. Anna started the second round at +1 in her first six holes. Then it hit… birdies on 7, 8 and 9 to make the turn at 34, 2 under on the front. She never looked back at that point. Finishing off her final round with another birdie on the back, Anna posted a -3, 69. Giving her a 2-day total 140, -4 for the tournament. Six strokes better than the runner-up, she secured her championship. Anna’s consistent dominant win, earns her the right to claim the title of the February FCG Player of the Month.

SEE YOU ON THE GOLF COURSE

SPRING IS HERE, SO IS GOLF!

The beginning of April has become the most special time in golf with all focus from all over the world being on one of the most prestigious golf courses, Augusta National. Home of one of golf’s majors, The Master’s Tournament. The final round of the Augusta National Women’s Amateur and the Drive-Chip-Putt Championship are also held here just before the big event. All of these events are the unofficial, official start of the season for golfers all over the globe.

But one of the things that I was really curious about was how the scores were going to be compared between the Women’s Amateur and the tour pros at Augusta National. Firstly, let’s look at the course on paper:

How did they score (based on the final round score):

In all fairness, even though the final round was used for the comparison for this not-so scientific analysis, the pros played on the course the whole week. Whereas the women only played one tournament round and some practice rounds. If the women had to a chance to play their whole event at Augusta, would the scoring average be closer. I guess we won’t know anytime soon. I would love to see that happen though.

Happy Golfing to Everyone!
