FUTURE CHAMPIONS GOLF MAGAZINE

Dear Junior Golf Community,

It’s hard to believe this is already our 20th year operating Future Champions Golf programs and the start of our 16th full year hosting multi day golf tournaments. Thank you all for your support of the Tour and the programs that we offer. 2023 looks to be an exciting year of growth on all levels of the Tour. We are expanding Tournament Operations in other regions of the United States. We have partnered with more than 30 other tours around the world for qualifying events to bring the best players in the world to the 15th Annual FCG Callaway World Junior Golf Championship that will be played July 17-19, 2023. We are excited to announce this year’s event will feature 750 junior golfers ages 7-18 from over 50 countries and will be played on 12 Championship Golf Courses. We will also have a new host hotel for this year’s event.

Other exciting things to note is the return of all of our FCG World Series Events with several new events including an event at the #1 course in Arkansas. We have established the FCG Iconic Ocean Series that will feature our best world series events held at courses along the ocean. Stay tuned for more about that exciting event.

Also this year we are starting the FCG International Team Championship that will be played a few days prior to the start of the FCG International Championship. Did you know the FCG international is the largest annual OPEN event in junior golf? This means you can just sign up and play in one of the world’s largest and most exciting world events in junior golf. You do however need to meet the scoring requirements listed on the website.

There is so much more to talk about but we will announce more in future emails and on our blog and social media. Stay connected with us on the blog, here in our monthly magazine, and our new podcast which kicks off later this month again for 2023! If you have any questions or comments please contact us anytime. We want to be your favorite junior golf and college golf program.

This award-winning golf course is one of New Zealand’s premier golf courses. Located in Christchurch located in the south of the island it has been named “Club of the Year” in the Golf NZ 2020 National Golf Awards and is currently listed on 2023/2024 Top 50 New Zealand golf courses by Australian Golf Digest.

The par 72 championship that was originally the Hagley Golf Club was built on 120 acres of dry river land by Joe A Clements. Has become a truly beautiful parkland course with trees and shrubbery that surround the fairways and course. It has been home to many prestigious tournaments including the 1985 NZ Open which was won by Corey Pavin. The course was also graced by golf legends Tom Watson, Tom Kite, Bob Charles, Peter Thomson, Tom Weiskopf and more. It will also play host to FCG South Island New Zealand Open on December 2 & 3, 2023.

Russley Golf Club plays 5093 yards from the forward tees to 7089 yards from the tips. Although the course is relatively flat you find the challenges of doglegs, fairway and greenside bunkers and water hazards around the 6th and 7th green. The front 9’s biggest challenge will be keeping it accurate because the tree lined fairways makes it tight. Make careful selections of what big sticks you’ll want to use. The back 9 becomes fairly wide open and the greens are large which makes you short game and putting becomes the challenge that stands out. Bring all of your golf skills to be successful on this course.

Smeal’s Coaching Tips

ANALYZE YOUR SUMMER

PERFORMANCE

PLAN OUT YOUR FALL SCHEDULE

How did you play this summer? The summer is the best time to peak and play your best golf as you don’t have school obligations, longer days, more time to practice, and the best and biggest tournaments are in the summer. Now that the summer has ended it is time to evaluate your performance. What worked? What didn’t? Were you prepared for the summer? What could you have done better? You can use a stat system to track all your rounds and see how you performed. We use Draw More Circles for all of our stat tracking and performance progress. Evaluate your strengths and weaknesses and make a clear plan to achieve your future goals.

PLANNING THE FALL - IT’S GO TIME! Are you pumped to get to work? It takes motivation and energy and a clear plan to help you achieve your goals. Make your goals specific and make them big. Write out exactly what it will take to reach your goals. Talk to someone who is good at achieving goals, and someone who is good at getting players better. Use the knowledge to set up a practice schedule that you can handle and commit to. Hold yourself accountable for your practice and make sure everyday seems productive and that you accomplished something. Plan ahead for tournament play. Will you play a full fall schedule or part-time?

Always be planning ahead and playing the LONG GAME. Consistency is everything in the game of success and reaching your goals. If you get a little better everyday, after time you will be amazing. Stay consistent and be inspirational in your thinking. Help others along the way!

Let’s go this Fall!

ADDITIONAL SUPPORT

Attention Gen Zer’s-Doesn’t matter what sport you are participating in-be it FCG tournaments, lacrosse summits or Xfinity car racing. There is one common thread among all those athlete’s who participate in these sports. Parents or a supporting guardian!

Parents/guardians spend countless hours, endless road trips, holidays in hotel rooms, and resources supporting their aspiring athlete’s passion and dreams. Parents and guardians are the sounding board, support system that facilitate the growth of their child as an athlete and an upstanding person in the community. Instilling qualities of hard work, fairness, competitiveness are critical to excel in sports and life.

However, it’s the other intangibles parents and guardians instill daily in their lives off the playing fields that matter the most. Gen Zer’s learn what they live. Life and leadership skills, respect, kindness, compassion are a few qualities that prepare any athlete for the long term “sport” they will play every day-LIFE!

Connor Mosack a Racecar driver in the Trans Am, Xfinity and Arca series is a “direct reflection of how his parents Cal Mosack and Jerri Flowers Webb raised a young aspiring Racecar driver into a young man who is changing children’s lives battling cancer on and off the track. Connor, a graduate from High Point University in NC started racing at 16 years old. His trajectory and success in his short career on the track has been exceptional but not without the support from his parents.

Connor’s parents Cal Mosack, Mark Webb and Jerri Flowers Webb are a great example of how parents who have instilled life and leadership values at home have transformed Connor’s success on and especially off the track. While Connor’s focus is laser on the track, he finds time to utilize his platform to make a meaningful difference for children battling pediatric cancer.

How can a teenager possibly change a child’s life who is battling pediatric cancer?

Here’s how Connor Mosack as a teenager and now an adult continues to make an impact on children fighting pediatric cancer with his Racecar platform!

NEDvocating….

“My journey with FOJ began shortly after I was introduced to Denis when I met a young boy named Bryce Long or “Super Bryce.” Bryce was fighting leukemia at the time. Denis showed me how spending time with and adopting a child with leukemia could brighten his life when he was surrounded by fear and

uncertainty caused by his disease. I really enjoyed having Bryce and his family out to the NASCAR hall of fame and showing them all the things our sport has to offer. A few months later, we were able to bring Bryce to a race at Charlotte Motor Speedway and show him the car and everything that goes into getting a car on the track. Thankfully, Bryce now has no evidence of disease! We are so grateful for the FOJ foundation and the opportunities they offer.”

Connor is currently 24 and a newlywed to his beautiful wife Daryn. He is humble as the day is long, not allowing success to change him. With his highly developed life and leadership skills honed growing up with his parents Cal Mosack and Jerri Flowers Webb more children’s lives fighting the beast are being changed. Connor Mosack is the epitome of how NEDvocate’s lead by example and inspire others battling cancer. Kudos to your Mom and Dad and all those parents supporting their child’s dream!

I have been exposed and blessed to meet some incredible human beings on this journey. From all walks of life, cancer knows no zip code and doesn’t discriminate. We met Stacia Boyton at a cancer event in Mass after Jaclyn was diagnosed with her malign brain tumor. After meeting her parents Matt and Suzanne, I knew why she was different from all her other peers at her age. There is a saying in our cancer community, “Get’s it”! Stacia demonstrated she “Get’s it” by her actions. Blessed to have Stacia on our journey improving the quality of life for children battling the beast.

“In the year 2007, I developed a newfound passion for working with children living with brain tumors. My passion was sparked when I met a young girl named Jaclyn Murphy and learned more about her family’s mission. I have spent many years working to help grow this foundation through volunteer and then ultimately became a member of the foundations team. During this time worked with hundreds of families from around the world addressing the fears and traumas they faced

I worked closely with these families to help create a therapeutic healing process. Having this experience helped me to understand how challenging it is to live with childhood cancer. In conjunction to dealing with the effects of a brain injury, and how it impacts the entire family. During this time working at Friends of Jaclyn I was in awe at how many different medical professionals, doctors’ visits, and supports families living with cancer encounter during a diagnosis of a young one. I would spend hours on the phone each week talking with parents, coaches, and kids in the foundation working to understand the needs and supports that would be beneficial for families. What I learned during this process is there is no s tandard because each family has its unique needs. After leaving the foundation I went back to school to earn my Master’s Degree as a Mental Health Counselor with a Specialization in Expressive Arts Therapy at Lesley University. During my educational process I focused on how to use art, music, dance, drama, and play to support kids and families. This expanded my understanding of how trauma affects the brain, body, and family system.

Since becoming an expressive arts therapist I have worked in a variety of settings including after school, inpatient mental health, group and outpatient. I recently opened my own Expressive Arts Studio in Humarock, MA to continue sharing the gifts that the expressive arts modalities provide. Using these modalities offers an opportunity to engage in a creative process to increase one’s ability to connect, create, and regulate. Empowering kiddos to gain mastery in new ways that create sparkly eyed moments, creative expression, and how to regulate their nervous systems not only supports them but also the family. As I continue to grow the studio I hope to provide increased education on the expressive arts, regulation strategies, and honoring my role as a forever Nedvocate. I look forward to welcoming families living with cancer to my studio while also raising awareness on a small community scale”.

BOYS COLLEGE PREP

Mattias Morris

Class of 2024

Mattias had to fight hard all three rounds of the FCG World Series Global Cup. Posting a -5, 67 in the first round he found himself 2-strokes behind the leader. After the second round despite shooting a -4, 68 he still found himself in 2nd place 1-stroke behind. Going into the final round he knew he needed to put the foot to the metal if he wanted to take the championship. He ended up shooting a -3, 69 which was good enough to tie for the lead. Eventually claiming the victory after the playoff with a winning score of -12, 204. Mattias’ grit and determination proves that he has the right stuff to be named FCG Player of the Month for July.

RLS GIRLS COLLEGE PREP

I Ju Tsai

Class of 2024

Playing in the heat of the desert of Palm Springs, I Ju had neither a good nor bad first round. Shooting an even par 72, I Ju was outside of the top 10 looking at T11. But day 2 changed all of that. Posting a blistering -6, 64 she took the overnight lead. But with only a 2-stroke lead. As she started the 3rd round, she set in mind that she wasn’t going to give up the lead. After all is said and done, I Ju final round of -5, 65 allowed her to claim the victory and become the 2024 FCG World Champion for the Girls 15-18 division. It also earns her the right to be named FCG Player of the Month in July.

LESSONS TO WATCH

Chris Smeal was hired to be the primary golf coach for one of the fastest growing golf channels on YouTube: Jerome Rufin - Scratch to Scratch. In just two short months Jerome’s Channel has gone from 0 to over 22,000 subscribers and is growing almost 1,000 subscribers every other day. The channel is documenting the journey of a determined individual trying to start from scratch, and aiming to become a scratch golfer. He is posting every single day on all forms of social media (YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, etc.) around all aspects of the game of golf.

You can watch his work on and off the course including: full swing, short game, mental and physical training, gameplay on the course, and even how he is transforming his entire livelihood in his day to day life to adjust for this journey.

After spending time with several other coaches in the San Diego area, Jerome has selected Chris Smeal to be his primary full swing coach going forward on this journey based on several recommendations and Chris’s ability to get players to scratch. Chris has helped over 170 junior golfers earn college golf scholarships, has coached three players that eventually played in the final match on golf channel at the NCAA division 1 finals, and developed Joey Vrzich who at one point was #1 college golfer in the nation.

Chris will be taking Jerome from his current level and will develop his foundation and accelerate his development through mechanics and his mental approach to the game.

The Last Thought BACK TO SCHOOL

Here you are once again. School is starting to be in full swing. Whether you are going to high school or just moving up to the next grade. Maintaining your golf game ready will always be a challenge.

For some, it will be easier since their high school season also starts along with classes. If not, the question becomes how do I keep my game up-to-par. The answer? Time management. Prioritize what and how you practice. Practicing with a purpose becomes more important and truer even more so. But even though you want to maintain your golf skills, remember that school studies should always come first.

If you have a great game but your GPA is not so much, there may not be as many open doors for you on the road to college. As a student-athlete you always have to concentrate on both of those aspects. As a junior golf golfer, you will always be grinding throughout the year. So take that challenge on and be the best student-athlete you can be.

So with all that said, I wish you good luck, study hard, practice golf hard and enjoy the times with friends and classmates.

Welcome back to school!
