FUSA STUDENT PRESIDENT

Janageeth (Jana)

My name is JANAGEETH/JANA (he/him) and I am running for Student President with FIRE-UP

FIRE-UP is a team of driven students, who will ignite progressive change at Flinders University for the benefit of all students We care about doing the things that matter the most to everyday students

FIRE-UP stands for:

- Expanding financial support for students during the costof-living crisis

- Ensuring the welfare of students at uni and on placement

- A thriving campus culture for all students

- Better support for student clubs

- Creating a safe and accessible campus for everyone

I’m studying a Bachelor of Computer Science (AI) and have many roles at the university Right now, I'm the VicePresident of the Sri Lankan Students Association, and I'm also on the FUSA Student Council

In my student life– I've experienced the struggle I've seen fellow students battling; the cost-of-living crisis, lack of student support and social isolation Last year, I asked “what can I do to change this?” That’s why this year as your general councillor, I initiated projects to help international students feel included and helped open a sensory space for neurodivergent students with FNSSA

But you know what? I believe we can do even more That's why me and my awesome team are going all in for the student council

We understand that ACTIONS SPEAK LOUDER THAN WORDS

That’s why FIRE-UP needs your help to make your university the best it can be FIRE-UP FUSA to make your university experience as “lit” as possible

We’re FIRED-UP, but we need your help to spark the progressive change for Flinders University

FUSA STUDENT PRESIDENT Jess Williams

Hey Flinders! I’m Jess Williams and I’m excited to be running to be your next FUSA Student President with Activate I am currently studying a Bachelor of Science (Forensic and Analytical Science) I began in 2020 as a topic representative, and from there, Activate inspired me to successfully run for the 2022 FUSA Mature Age Students Officer as well as my current position as the 2023 FUSA Education Officer

I am passionate about student representation and am proud of the accomplishments I have achieved in these roles Inspired by my time as a topic representative, I established the Student Representation Network and the Timetabling Campaign I also understand the importance of connection through community and have worked to ensure accessible spaces such as the Mature Age Students Space

As a student, a parent, and a carer I understand the struggle for study-work-life balance that we face in a society where we often can’t afford to only be students The increase in the cost of living, lack of adequate affordable housing and the increased pressure for upskilling for employability in a stable job with a liveable wage create a need for strong representation If elected I will take a strong stance on adapting the delivery of our education in a more accessible and inclusive manner that will ensure that there are realistic options for students and alternatives to account for the diverse range of pressures on students

I am grateful for the confidence that the students have had in me to perform in my previous roles This experience, combined with the innate passion I have to advocate and empower students to work together to improve our university, ensures I have what is needed to be your Student President

General Secretary

Hey all, I’m Avidan Omondi and I am running to be your 2024 FUSA General Secretary with the Activate Team I’m currently studying the postgraduate program in Data Science, and I proudly serve as the president of the Flinders University Kenyan Students Association My journey in student politics spans seven years, dating back to my undergraduate days at the University of Nairobi As an international student, my multicultural background gives me a broader perspective on the challenges our diverse student body faces irrespective of race, gender, and sexual orientation and personal experiences

Since I joined Flinders University, I realised the low engagement and participation of students with FUSA activities Drawing from my experience as a student leader, I fully understand the transformative potential that the student union holds in addressing critical issues such as school fee payments, mental health support, job opportunities, and industry placements I believe that by building upon the solid foundation laid by Team Activate, we can usher in a new era of more vibrant FUSA activities, fostering increased student participation and engagement Together, we can enhance the university experience and collectively address the challenges students encounter

I hold a deep passion for leadership, and the role of General Secretary presents an incredible opportunity for me to channel that passion into propelling FUSA to new heights My choice to run alongside Activate is rooted in our shared commitment to addressing the challenges that students encounter, irrespective of our diverse backgrounds I firmly believe that no student's education should be hindered by their inability to access the support provided by student clubs If elected, Team Activate is dedicated to ensuring that this support remains accessible, making sure every student can thrive in their academic journey

I’m Running for Education Officer as I believe our university can and should do more for the thousands of students enrolled at Flinders Student welfare is my biggest concern and has a direct link to education; students who are going hungry or struggling financially, especially on placement, or trying to navigate an entirely new country will be at a disadvantage compared to their peers That is why FIRE-UP is committed to a range of policies designed to relieve the burden of student life, and I am proud to stand by my fellow candidates

Beyond this, FUSA needs an Education Officer who is going to stand up to course cuts! Our university is growing in size, so why is our quality of education decreasing? Enlarged reading lists and prerecorded lectures are no substitute for high-quality classroom experiences and are not adequately preparing students for the transition from university into the future A vote for FIRE-UP is a vote for a proactive and passionate student council

Education Officer

Hi, I’m Maddy and I’m running for Education Officer with Left Action

Students are being screwed by the cost-of-living crisis But the 2023 Labor budget handed down nothing but attacks on our living standards HECS debts have increased by 7%, centrelink payments were increased by a woeful $2 85 a day, while food, rent and utility cost have shattered records Instead of signing off on the status quo, we should be fighting for price caps on campus meals, free education and rent freezes

Left Action is a team of socialist activists We stand against racism, sexism and LGBTI+ oppression, imperialism, war, the exploitation of workers and environmental destruction We are actively involved in organising campaigns to defend the right to protest in SA, oppose transphobes like Posie Parker and demand money for welfare, not warfare We think that FUSA needs to take these issues seriously and lead the fight too

We’re fighting to:

- Take real action on climate change! The university must cut all ties with climate and war criminals No defence and fossil fuel bosses on our university council, and no research partnerships with them either!

- Build the struggle against oppression Conservatives and the far-right are growing by waging a culture war on trans people, migrants, and indigenous people Students should be part of the fight to oppose oppression everywhere, whether it’s on campus, or on the streets

- Fight the cost-of-living crisis We need money for health, housing and education, not tax cuts for the rich and money for landlords

- Bring traditions of solidarity and radicalism back to FUSA Student associations should be collective left-wing bodies that lead the fight against injustice and oppression

I would like to advocate for postgraduate students to note from my experience, organisations that do not acknowledge students` qualifications despite their significant role and contribution Organisations could benefit from education and an awareness of how Universities have changed some criteria for not only enrolments but also for example use of some terminology like what the word " Placements " means for a postgraduate student

I have witnessed students' dreams being terminated because of a lack of support to allow self-development and hence contribute to meaningful changes within the Organisations because students are not welcome to make such changes

Student representation is important to me as a woman in STEM and, as such, I feel like student council should be representative of the diverse experiences of international students at our university

During my time at university, I have experienced the common separation of international students from the rest of the student cohort, which often leaves us underrepresented I want to work on ensuring that there are greater opportunities for and spaces involving international students, making all students feel welcomed at Flinders International students struggle with high living costs and finding proper living, and do not receive enough support from University and ISS We face problems in clarity of placement, work experience, and postgraduate career paths as there are no career services aimed at international students

If elected as your International Student Officer, I will endeavour to organise events where representative members of all international clubs share their experiences and platform their voices I will advocate for international students to have more affordable living and more direct access to proper accommodation I will also advocate for better career service for International students

queer Officer

Caitlyn Williams

Hiya Flinders!

My name is Caitlyn Williams and I am running to be your next FUSA Queer Officer with the Activate team! I’m currently studying a double bachelor in computer and engineering sciences

At Flinders I’ve been subject to deadnaming due to problems within the university’s systems This has caused discomfort and insecurity within educational spaces that have claimed to be welcoming and progressive If elected I will work on ensuring this is rectified to create a more inclusive education environment for all students

Over the past year, I’ve been the treasurer for the Flinders University Computer Society and Queer Collective With the Queer Collective, I’ve not only maintained a record of the collective’s expenditure, but also assisted in the development, communication, and execution of regular events and our newsletter, as well as the general upkeep of online platforms Additionally, I’ve helped maintain the cleanliness and resources within the Queer Space at Bedford Park

If elected Queer Officer I will take on the report that the 2023 Queer Officer worked on in his term, and communicate with the university to work on recommendations such as adopting a gender affirmation policy, expanding all-gender bathrooms, and diversifying the curriculum I will continue fighting against the systemic deadnaming issues in the university’s systems, and fight for more representation across campuses such as Sturt and Tonsley

I am running with Activate as I have benefited from previous members successes in LGBTQIA+ advocacy within their FUSA positions, and I was inspired to continue their work and ensure further improvement for the community on campus and online

Hey Flinders! I am Pratibha Vashisht, and I’m running to be your next FUSA Social Activities Officer with the Activate team

I am currently studying a Masters of Environmental Management and Sustainability and am interested in how social activities can have a positive environmental impact! Over the past years, I have been working with different organisations on events, activities and campaigns with a community and sustainability focus I personally believe that working on social issues is very important at this time because it is such a vast domain It can be difficult to categorise different themes separately, many small issues like inclusivity, cultural and mutual understanding, student issues, and environment and society relations don’t get adequate resources, which motivates me to ensure I run events that provide platforms for broader issues I believe that when working together, with small simple steps, we can see positive outcomes in the near future

Previously, I have spent a year with the NGO ‘Leaders For Tomorrow’ working on topics including, student education, mass awareness, contraceptive education and education accessibility for women During my Bachelors degree, I was the Student President of the Ecology and Society club If elected as your Social Activities Officer, I will work to ensure inclusivity for all, accessible spaces and events, and address the needs raised by students I will organise events in coordination with other student council members and try to address all the social issues that we students face on different levels while we spend our time at the University I will work with honesty and passion to achieve positive outcomes and make our Flinders an even better place for everyone

Howdy! I’m Shannon and I am running for FUSA Mature Age Students Officer with Activate in 2024

I am currently an honours student studying microbiology at Flinders with a background in both biology and psychology In my experience studying multiple degrees, I have a deep understanding of the trials and tribulations faced by tertiary students

Much at Flinders is worthy of praise, however I have witnessed many students can be disadvantaged during their time at university From timetabling issues to accessibility challenges, numerous areas need improvement Many problems disproportionately affect mature aged students, due to roles as carers, parents, or permanent workers, in addition to academic requirements

As a mature aged student, I have personally experienced many of these constraints, so I know firsthand how difficult and isolating it is As such, I feel driven to represent mature aged students across the university, hoping to ease the burden

With the support of Activate, I brought this personal understanding to the role in the past year, where I have assisted students on the ground, including those affected by recent cuts, and successfully running numerous FUSA events to bring inclusive campus culture back to Flinders

Alex Priest

Hiya everyone, I'm Alex, and I'm running to be a General Council Member on the FUSA Student Council for 2024

Some of you all might know me from my roles in FLASC & FUCS – the science & computing clubs – across the last couple of years Most recently, I've been fortunate enough to take the lead in setting up a new clubs room at Tonsley!

As president of one club, and education officer of the other, I've organised study sessions with professional tutors, run science shows & pub crawls, helped organise a college ball for 3 years running, and much more Alongside the club roles, I've been on a college education committee, helped with the recent McHughs & Tonsley revamps (e g new chairs at Tonsley!), and participated in a board of inquiry inside the university

Throughout all of this, I've learned a lot about how the university operates, and how to work with the people from a few different departments I'm hoping to bring these skills over to a role in the FUSA Student Council, ready to help the team out wherever I can!

I am always on the lookout for more ways to get students involved Club rooms and student-run spaces are a speciality of mine now, and I'll be looking for opportunities to establish more of them around campus :)

I believe in student-run spaces & community driven projects, and that's why I'm running with Activate

- Creating a safe and accessible campus for everyone

I’m a first year Bachelor of International Relations and Political Science student, but that doesn’t (I hope) mean I’m a weird hack focused solely on “climbing the ladder ” I am, however, focused on getting stuff done, and over the past year FIRE-UP general councillors have done just that It’s why I’m running with them: because I value above all else working on and *achieving* positive outcomes for students If you ever see me around, I’m practically begging you to ask about public transport As a student reliant on public transport to get on campus, usually involving a 3+ hour round-trip (!!), I get how much of a pain getting not only to, but around campus can be

We deserve leadership focused on getting the stuff that matters done, from clubs to financial support – and that’s what I want to deliver as a General Councillor Progressive, but importantly, pragmatic policies that can make the lives of all students at Flinders better are important, and they’re the bedrock of what FIRE-UP is offering this year

National Union of Students (NUS) Delegate Muthu

Hello, my name is Muthu, and I am thrilled to put forth my candidacy for the position of FUSA NUS Delegate to represent Flinders students at the National Union of Students Conferences My academic journey is rooted in Disability Policy at Flinders University, emphasising advocacy, and fostering an inclusive community

Why am I equipped for this role? I'm not just an advocate; I live with Cerebral Palsy and ADHD These conditions have granted me invaluable insight into navigating the educational landscape with disabilities In addition to my studies, I am actively volunteering in multiple capacities at Flinders University, serving as a consultant to enhance accessibility and inclusivity across campus I also volunteer as a Project Coordinator at the Maldives Association of Persons with Disabilities These experiences have honed my understanding of the broader, systemic changes necessary for genuine inclusion, specifically within educational settings and at a national level

Upon election, I intend to:

- Improve a regular dialogue between disabled students and the NUS to ensure proactive solutions, not just compliance

- Shed light on "invisible" disabilities, frequently overshadowed in discussions about accessibility

- Collaborate extensively within NUS factions to maintain disability rights as a bipartisan concern

- Partner with State and National Officers to devise policies attuned to the distinctive needs of students across various geographical locations

I chose to run with Activate due to their unwavering commitment to equity, inclusivity, and student rights

My promise to you is rooted in being progressive, accountable, and transparent I have consistently valued transparency and plan to integrate the same ethos within NUS

I humbly ask for your vote Let's collaboratively sculpt an educational environment where accessibility isn't an afterthought, but a given

Hey, I’m Denzell and I’m running for NUS Delegate with Left Action

Capitalism isn’t working The system's addiction to fossil fuels is making extreme heat waves, severe flooding and wildfires the new normal Albanese has signed an aggressive military pact, funnelling billions of dollars into nuclear submarines Meanwhile, the cost-of-living crisis is crushing students and workers with rising rents, debts and utility costs Something needs to change

We want to take the fight against injustice to the national stage The National Union of Students is your union, and it should be leading students in campaigns to push back against this destructive status quo

Left Action is a team of socialist activists We stand against racism, sexism and LGBTI+ oppression, imperialism, war, the exploitation of workers and environmental destruction We are actively involved in organising campaigns to defend the right to protest in SA, oppose transphobes like Posie Parker and demand money for welfare, not warfare We think that NUS needs to take these issues seriously and lead the fight too

- Bring traditions of solidarity and radicalism back to NUS Student associations should be collective left-wing bodies that lead the fight against injustice and oppression

Hey Flinders people! My name is Jamil Locker and I am running to be your next FUSA Welfare Officer with the Activate Team! I’m currently in my second year studying a Bachelor of Public Health and student representation is important to me because I believe students should not be defined or restricted by their economic status

I have been the course representative for the Bachelor of Public Health over the last two years, I have also had the privilege of being involved with the school talks on AI as well as being involved with students as partners and other initiatives throughout the university This combined with my personal experiences of being a student on Centrelink I found my education limited because of my economic status Thus believe I have the knowledge and the passion to be the Welfare Officer for 2024

I am the founder and President of the Flinders University Public Health Association and the founder of the Flinders Vegan Society My roles in this club have greatly improved my communication, teamwork, and project management skills, making me ideal for the Welfare Officer role using the skills, I gained in these roles I would like to create a university-wide welfare needs assessment accessible to students with the goal of pinpointing areas of need across student welfare as a whole I chose to run with Activate because of its part in steering the initial stages of initiatives such as the Be a Better Human campaign and the professional skills development grant scheme
