Piecing Together Your Vacation in the Arbuckles

By nature, I am not a puzzle person. My mama used to say I had “ants in my pants”…more accurately, probably a smattering of A.D.D… but I just couldn’t sit still. A 50 “piece-er” might have been within my capabilities, but not more. As this year’s edition of Fun Times Magazine began to take shape, we were reminded that the Arbuckle Area has so much to offer. When you plan a vacation here, there truly are many pieces to choose from. During the brainstorming phase of production, we tried thinking “outside of the box”. In the midst of our outside thinking, Super Graphics Man Tim Duncan’s wife, Melissa, suggested inside the box thinking – inside the puzzle box. Perfect! Thanks Melissa! The puzzle concept really fits. From rugged mountain tops to thick, woodland terrain, the eco-system is extremely varied.

The availability of things to do is even more diverse. Do you like water? We have it everywhere! Springs, lakes, streams and rivers that host almost every kind of water sport. Love to hike or do some wildlife watching? The aforementioned landscape is home to an abundance of wildlife and offers paths to stroll as well as challenging hill climbing. Maybe mixing fun and education piques your interest. We have museums displaying area history, honoring our military, showing the culture of the Chickasaw Nation and a tip of the 10 gallon hat to the cowboy life. Seeking unusual transportation? Try horseback or an ATV. These ideas are only a start. Did I mention shopping, ziplining, gaming… or doing absolutely nothing?

“Use the Fun Times Magazine like the picture on the top of the box, to help you see how to put it all together.” Trying to get my head around the puzzle concept, I “interviewed” my puzzle-working friends, a.k.a. Advance Small Group. (Thanks ladies!) Seems that there are a number of commonalities between assembling a puzzle and vacationing in the Arbuckles – it’s relaxing, you need to slow down and take pleasure in the process, and it can be enjoyed by multiple generations of the family. It might also be a challenging, team-building effort. Use the Fun Times Magazine like the picture on the top of the box, to help you see how to put it all together. Set your edges then pull together the colors and details. Not only is the Fun Times your “big picture” guide, it is also your resource to other tools… websites, maps, and references to services.

Enjoy a Family Movie Night! The Arbuckle Area offers some great opportunities to take in family-oriented movie night, either “on the cheap” or absolutely free! Venues range from a state-of-the-art theatre to shows under the stars. The Chickasaw Cultural Center has Saturday night movies each week in their hi-tech auditorium housing a 2,700 square foot screen and 2k HD projector. For $3.00, you can catch the movie, but for $5.00 the ticket, drink and popcorn are all yours. Movies on the Plaza are free and shown every Saturday night, weather permitting, during June and July. Things are Cranking Up at the Cross Bar Ranch NBC Sports Event in May Of all the paths you take in life, make sure a few of them are dirt. – John Muir Although Mr. Muir was probably not thinking of taking that path in an off-road vehicle, if he visited Cross Bar Ranch, he might have changed his mind. Especially under the new management of Midground Creators. Wake up off-roaders – things are about to get really interesting! Midground Creators is a management team with vision. Early in 2017, they took on managing, promoting and developing

5,500 acres west of Davis, known as Cross Bar Ranch ATV Park. The park is in the heart of the Arbuckle Mountains, south-central Oklahoma’s ancient mountain range. It is the largest and most centrally located off-road recreation area in the region. Cross Bar offers a diverse terrain that varies from flat, wide, open spaces to loamy hills with hardwood timber, as well as muddy bottoms and steep, rocky, hill climbing sections. In addition, the panoramic views from mountain tops, crystal clear streams and brilliant star-filled night skies are like scenic icing on the rugged cake. Midground’s goal is to develop all of this into the premier outdoor recreation destination in the Central US. Their description of the vision is “to create the off-roaders version of a ski resort”. Everyone from the slower 4x4 SUV to the higher speed pre-runner will get in on the action and eventually a speedway to host truck, UTV, ATV and motorcycle racing. What will you experience now, in the early stages of development? PLENTY! Cross Bar has been an off-road park for years and improvements were started in early 2017. Apart from the motorized side of the park, there is the east side – “the quiet side”. This is where horseback riding, mountain biking and hiking will occur. The rewards for slowing down will be some of the most spectacular scenery in this part of the US. On the calendar for May 20, 2017 is an NBC Sports event held at Cross Bar with Ultra 4 Racing. This will include vehicles with major corporate sponsors right down to weekend warriors. The event will be produced by Hammerking Productions and is a not-to-be-missed occurrence. The Cross Bar Ranch already offers RV and tent camping. There is a general store on site and you can rent 4-wheelers and Side by Sides. Does your family have a long history of reunions in the Chickasaw National Recreation Area (CNRA), possibly dating back to the Platt National Park days? Or perhaps you are a “newbie” to the peace and serenity this Park offers. Either way, you are invited to join the Friends of the Chickasaw National Recreation Area, or Friends of the Park, as they are commonly known. For the last two decades, Park Friends Groups have been created to assist National Parks all across America. These groups support needed park programs and projects that have been beyond the reach of appropriated dollars, especially in these days of cut-backs.

One focus of the Friends of CNRA is the bison herd. Descendants of the current herd were brought to this park in the 1920s. A historical part of CNRA, the Friends are working to enhance the visitor’s experience in viewing them as well as their care. In 2016, an interpretive sign was placed at the Bison Viewpoint. This was a project co-funded by Friends and Leadership Murray County. One way that the Friends Group raises funds is by selling Bison Buddies. Bison Buddies are soft, stuffed, mini versions of the huge mammals residing in the park. Each Buddy has a numbered ear tag that is unique. They come with an adoption scroll, a card showing your support of the CNRA

Celebrate the Butterfly Each spring and fall the Chickasaw Cultural Center (C.C.C.) celebrates the travels of the Monarch Butterfly. The center hosts a special day each season featuring hands-on educational activities for teaching monarch-saving actions, special guest speakers and fun-filled learning experiences. The campus is in the Monarch migration path through Oklahoma. The butterfly journeys from Mexico to Canada each spring and reverses the trip each autumn. The C.C.C. has constructed a butterfly garden to accommodate the colorful winged guests. Visitors to the garden have an opportunity to explore and to view the film Flight of the Butterflies.

Monarchs must lay their eggs on milkweed plants because their offspring emerge as caterpillars and feed on milkweed leaves. The caterpillars then spin themselves into cocoons and come out a few weeks later as a brilliant orange, black and white butterfly. In an effort to protect and preserve the monarch, the Chickasaw Nation has planted milkweed and nectar plants throughout its 13-county territory in Oklahoma, particularly at Chickasaw Cultural Center. Chickasaw Cultural Center Not too long ago, the Chickasaw Cultural Center was only a dream, fueled by vision of Chickasaws who wanted a place to revitalize, celebrate and share Chickasaw culture. Chickasaw people envisioned a place they could call home and guests could appreciate the story of the Chickasaw people. Today, a cultural awakening has arisen at the Chickasaw Cultural Center. In the five years since the massive campus opened, more than 400,000 guests from across the globe have experienced the story of the unconquered and unconquerable Chickasaw Nation. Built on the dreams, imagination, determination and vision of Chickasaw citizens, the Chickasaw Cultural Center’s serene 109-acre campus has hosted both international guests as well as local school children. Each aspect, from the trickling water features to the carefully planned café menu, was integrated into the Chickasaw Cultural Center because of its cultural significance. Grandparents, parents and children visit the Cultural Center and become immersed in the culture; learning the art of beading, basketry, Stomp Dance, Stickball and other culturally-significant activities. As guests are actively participating in these activities, they develop an appreciation of the history and heritage of the Chickasaw people. Campus Grows The Chickasaw Cultural Center campus has also expanded since opening.

Massive outdoor sculptures, such as “The Arrival” by Chickasaw artists Mike Larsen’s and Joanna Underwood’s southeastern pottery sculptures intermingle with beautiful water and rock features and native landscaping. The Apisa Art Gallery, opened in 2013, serves as a home of Chickasaw art, a place to appreciate the art and artists of the Chickasaw Nation. Hundreds of Native Americans have connected with their family heritage in the Holisso: The Center for the Study of Chickasaw Cultural and History. A giant video wall has been added to the Chikasha Poya exhibit center, to share stories of Chickasaw lives. Learning opportunities have expanded in the Chikasha Inchokka´ Traditional Village where energetic cultural instructors, dressed in 1700’s regalia, share activities such as Stickball games, cooking demonstrations, language lessons, corn husk doll and archery demonstrations. The village features traditional Chickasaw homes, a replica mound and cultural instructors demonstrating traditional crafts such as beadwork, basketry and pottery, tanning hides, bow making and flute making. Arbuckle Trail Rides Voted #1

For 16 years, Pete and Cheri Wolfe of Arbuckle Trail Rides have been sharing the western experience with visitors to the Arbuckle Mountain area. In January 2017, they were named Best Horseback Rides by Oklahoma Living Magazine, an Electric Co-operative magazine that covers the state. The Wolfes have both had a long history as professional horse trainers. Until the last few years, they trained, showed and competed on a national level. That experience has led to their trail horses being well-trained and in good condition. Their horses are able to navigate most terrain, including rocks, water, bridges and hills. Bromide Mountain Co is named for the overlook in the National Park and has that outdoor feel. Defined as “a unique mountain shop” they are the areas Patagonia Dealer. They have a distinctive selection of outdoor gear and backpacks, as well as gifts, home décor, local finds and jewelry. Okie Twister and Sweet Swirlz are both located on the south side ground level of The Artesian Hotel. Okie Twister is a home & gift store with country-style atmosphere. They carry an array of Made in Oklahoma products, including hand-made Chickasaw jewelry and old-fashioned candy. Sweet Swirlz is not exactly retail shopping…but a good place to take a break from shopping. Indulge in some frozen yogurt, Dippin’Dots or more candy varieties than you can imagine. Luxe is one of the Shops at The Artesian Hotel and boasts name-brand apparel, accessories and gifts as it provides a boutique shopping experience for men and women. The Spice and Tea Exchange is also located at The Artesian Hotel Shops, the Sulphur location is the first in Oklahoma. Just as the name says, they are all about a wide variety of spices and teas.

Happy 100th Birthday My Friend! In 2016, Chickasaw National Recreations Area celebrated its 100th Birthday. The following is a remembrance written and presented by Pam Chitwood at the celebration. She shares some beautiful memories from the viewpoint of a “local”. Wow, 100 years… that’s a long time! But then I realize I’ve been with you for half that time. Suddenly, it doesn’t seem so long. This park, the Chickasaw National Recreation Area (CNRA), is more than a place. It’s an old friend. With outstretched arms reaching to heaven and cool, refreshing waters, I find peace, comfort and relaxation here. I have enjoyed these waters since I was 4 years old. My friends and I swam in Bear Falls while our moms watched over us. This is where I lost my birthstone ring when I was 12. This is where my brother saved a little girl from drowning. In later years, this is where I brought my kids, and now, my grandson. Thanks for the memories, my old friend. I remember seeing my first live snake at the Nature Center… cruising the park after

school, windows rolled down and the heater or air conditioner blowing full blast… picnics, picnics, picnics… speeding through the low water bridge, splashing all the spectators… countless birthday parties at the Monkey Tree, where we take my grandson and great nieces for celebrations today. I was here for the unveiling of the U.S. Mint’s National Park Quarter representing Oklahoma. Our state’s representation was the historic Lincoln Bridge in CNRA. About 2 months later, my son, living in California, called to say he had received change at a restaurant and among the coins was this quarter. A very special moment for a boy raised in the shadow of that bridge.

“The Chickasaw National Recreation Area is more than a place. It’s an old friend.” I remember flood waters overtaking the streams, and the droughts when my boys and I walked the dry creek beds exploring. I cherish the long walks, then and now. And then there is that smell. Everyone knows Sulphur smells – courtesy of the Sulfur water. To us, it is the smell… and taste… of home.

Anyone that grew up here in their teen years will remember “going parking”. The dreaded peck, peck, peck of the Park Rangers flashlight on the steamed up car window. The blinding light as your crank the window down. “What are y’all doing?” came the question. Our reply? “Just watching the submarine races.” Let’s not forget the legends of the Park. We’ve heard the stories of Bigfoot sightings, the Lady of the Lake and, to this day, I cannot cross Travertine Bridge without fear of a troll appearing. In gratitude, I have one last wish. Creating Memories at Turner Falls Park The water is cool and refreshing. Honey Creek rushes over the 77 foot cliff, cascading into the pool below before flowing to the Washita River. My family is paying a visit to Turner Falls Park, Oklahoma’s oldest park. Named after Mazeppa Turner, early-day pioneer, this area has drawn visitors since 1868. Owned by the city of Davis, the 820 acre park is known for its rugged landscape and crystal-clear water. As soon as we park, our girls run to the clear blue stream, screeching and giggling. I unload at the picnic area where we set up camp. Our son tugs at my shirt, “Mamma, Mamma, I go swimming, too.” Relaxing on the beach, I feel our fourth baby kick inside me; even she is excited about our day away! The kids whiz down the water slide with their daddy. Our youngest daughter drops with a splash, her bright orange life-jacket popping her back to the surface, smiling from ear to ear. Her older sister braves the diving board at the aptly named Blue Hole. Bounce, bounce, SPLASH!

Later, we cautiously forge the low-water bridge. The kids love the feeling of the cold stream flowing passed. They sit on the bridge’s edge as the water curls around their waist. I delight in the sounds of their laughter. Excitedly, they call out “Daddy! Daddy! Look at us!” The sense of all that surrounds me is amazing. Smoking grills with sizzling hamburgers, the animated play of children, summer winds blowing my hair, the sun warming my very pregnant belly. I am truly relaxed and we are experiencing an escape from everyday life. After enjoying a picnic lunch, my babies head to the shallow area of the creek. I tune in to their chatter and overhear the wild imaginings taking place in the water. Before they become water-logged, we dip the kids out for a walk. Like ducks in a row, we journey to the Trading Post on a hunt for souvenirs. The building blends well with the landscape, having been constructed of native sandstone by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the1930s. We indulge in some retail

Eagles in the Arbuckles Southern Oklahoma is not usually considered a home for the Bald Eagle but, for the last 2-3 years, sightings are becoming more common. The pair pictured here are making their home near Dougherty, in the heart of the Arbuckles. Their chosen location is near the Washita River and the Arbuckle Lake. These bodies of water supply them with food and drink. At one time, Bald Eagles were on the extinction list. Destruction of forested area, exposure to chemicals, and pollution of food sources were man-made calamities that decreased their numbers. Only by the efforts of conservationists and a devoted commitment to curtail dangerous practices, has man been able to turn around the future of this species of wildlife and others. Our thanks to Becki James for sharing her photos with Fun Times Magazine. She has been watching this nesting pair thru the winter of 2016/17 and in early spring, the hatching of eaglets. She commented that seeing the eagles in their natural habitat has been an unforgettable experience.

Dougherty, America Dougherty, OK lies deep in the heart of the Arbuckle Mountains, on the Washita River. The community’s storied past earned it a reputation of being tough and it was said “if you came with an attitude, you left with an attitude adjustment!” The truthful history of this burg is a tale of pre-statehood settlement by pioneer-ranchers, including Mazeppa Turner, the namesake of Turner Falls Park. In 1887, the railroad and post office were established and 1899 brought the first church. A school was chartered in 1908. Early day Dougherty was supported by rock-crushing plants, 2 cotton gins, farming and ranching. This is also the birthplace of Kay Starr, pop and jazz singer and was a location for filming the movie “Dillinger” in 1972. Today’s Dougherty has a different story. Quiet and secluded, not a lot goes on here…and that is just how the natives like it! Many families have been here for generations. A short distance to area attractions, a drive to Dougherty pays off in scenic beauty, whether by auto or motorcycle. Lodging has recently been added to Dougherty’s list of businesses. Like the town, this is not your run of the mill lodging. This is all about sleeping in a tree house, albeit a very modern tree house. The Rock Creek Retreat offers the fun of having that lofty treehouse view combined with all the creature comforts we desire as adults. Rather than climb branches, count on the sturdy staircase for access. Likewise for your exit, or you may want to try a glide on the slide or the fireman’s pole. Four cabins are available with decks for woodland and wildlife viewing. The smallest unit is the Flying Penny, named for its gleaming copper siding. Cozy lodging for 2 and a microwave/ fridge make a sweet retreat for solitude. Three other cabins will sleep up to 6, offer a full kitchen, and a sitting area. All cabins have TV/DVD but it is highly recommended that you hide them from the kids and enjoy your surroundings.

The Price of Freedom Displayed at Military Memorial Museum - Ardmore Freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction. We did not pass it to our children in the bloodstream. It must be fought for, protected and handed on to them to do the same or, one day, we will be spending our sunset years telling our children and our children’s children, what it was once like in the United States where men were free. – Ronald Reagan Army. Navy. Air Force. Marines. Coast Guard. Commissioned Corp of US Public Health Services. Commissioned Corps of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. All eras, all branches. That is the claim of the Military Memorial Museum at the Greater Southwest Historical Museum and it is a claim they live up to well. To visit the Military Museum is to gain a greater sense of the sacrifices our military men and women make for our freedom. As you walk through the exhibition halls, you will view memorabilia from as far back as the War with Mexico (1847) thru the Persian Gulf War. On display are rare uniforms, medals, weaponry and other military artifacts. The collection of relics is unbelievably vast for what first appears to be a small space. The Military Memorial Museum touches both your funny bone and your heart in multiple ways. The lighter side of military life

is seen in water color cartoon paintings from the barracks building’s walls. The images were drawn on barracks located at the Ardmore Army Air Field which was in operation from 1942–1945. Touching your heart comes in many forms here. One is an exhibit of a table with a formal dinner setting, termed the “Table for One”, honoring POWs and MIAs. Another is the Fallen Soldier tribute, consisting of a warrior’s rifle with attached bayonet stuck in the ground, boots next to it, topped with their helmet as a way to memorialize a fighter killed during service. The Military Memorial Museum shoulders the responsibility of honoring, educating and reminding us of the price that has been paid for us. God’s Creative Genius On Display

A visit to Chickasaw National Recreation Area

Plant your hand in a buffalo hoof print and see the animals in their natural setting at the Chickasaw National Recreation Area (CNRA). But wait… that’s not a buffalo! Those animals live in Africa and Asia and sport the kind of headgear you see on a longhorn. What you glimpse at the CNRA is an American bison, our continent’s largest land animal. As my family and I noticed on our hike alongside the Bison Pasture, these behemoths with their massive heads and shoulder hump have more bulk than horn. It’s a good thing that the 75 acre Bison Pasture and Viewpoint Areas are fenced. Those shaggy brown beasts are descended from six bison obtained in the 1920s from the Wichita Mountains National Wildlife Refuge in western Oklahoma. The citizens who loaded these 2000 pound animals into horse drawn wagons for the 120 mile journey must have been quite dedicated to the task at hand. My family, on the other hand, traveled a short distance from our home to the CNRA. But we still had adventures along the way…

After our sedan sloshed through a stone-paved section of Travertine Creek, we followed the road until we reached Travertine Nature Center. The stone edifice of this building, built in 1969 by students of Frank Lloyd Wright, almost disappears into its wooded setting. Once inside, you can sink your hand into a bison – a bison pelt, that is, and buy a t-shirt with bison wisdom written all over it. But the

mammals aren’t the only things that are giant sized! Check out the walking stick insect that my daughter spotted on the veranda. Want more opportunities to spot wildlife as well as plants native to the area? Visit the Nature Center on Saturday or Sunday mornings at 9:30, when rangers lead hour long round trip hikes to nearby Antelope Springs. (There’s no admission charge to visit any of the unspoiled areas within the CNRA!) Everywhere you turn is a photo shoot waiting to happen – and a chance to reflect on God’s creative genius. Leafy canopies sift the sunlight so that underlying plants can thrive. Water provides habitat and nourishment. Rocks deter erosion and support lichens. We visited the park in the fall – on a weekday – and the area felt as peaceful as it must have been when the Chickasaw first came here. At Little Niagara, picnic tables take the place of teepees, but the water still flows as true as ever. Rocks, both smooth and mossy, form a path across the stream. Crossing Little Niagara, with its choppy water bubbling downstream and its bank beckoning on the other side, reminds me that I can take my daughter’s hand and reach the shore as long as our feet are planted on the Solid Rock. Stop at the Bait Box Bait, beer and BBQ…what else does a fisherman need? Ken and Gloria Hodge purchased the Bait Box in 2016 and have enjoyed meeting the campers, fishermen and residents that pass through their business. Their store is one of the few area shops that offer live bait. For the nearby campers, they have basic groceries, drinks and ice. And everyone enjoys their BBQ on Friday and Saturday. Camp. Fish. Eat. Relax. …at Lake Longmire Fishermen can be very demanding! Demands can blossom into a growing business. At least that is what Ron & Cindy Cobb of RC’s Campground & Quick Stop have discovered. In 2006, the Cobbs purchased land on the south side of Lake Longmire. Situated 11 miles east of Pauls Valley and 6 miles southwest of Stratford, the land filled their desire for a quiet retreat with easy lake access. They came out on weekends and made plans to build a home someday. But the fishermen had a different idea. Lake Longmire is a trophy bass lake and a great family gathering spot. The south side is the less trafficked side, but preferred by many. The prior owners of the Cobbs land had a small bait stand…and the anglers pleaded for it to return.

The Cobbs envisioned taking the pleas to a grander scale. Since 2006, they have brought back the live bait, added an RV full hook-up campground, and opened a small grill serving breakfast and lunch (dinner seasonally). Learn. Explore. Relax… at Lake Murray State Park I have always been an outdoor enthusiast. In fact, my life motto is “Happiest Outdoors”. I love hiking and birding and being among the giant oak trees at Lake Murray State Park allows me to satisfy those passions. I was delighted when I was offered a position as Park Naturalist at the Nature Center and knew from the first day I had met my calling. Crafted from native stone and glass, resting on a cliff above the lake, the building is an architectural beauty. The freeflowing lines of the structure beckon visitors to come and explore. The large deck overlooks the brilliant blue water and is a magnificent spot for photos.

Not a water baby? Enjoy a round of golf on the 18-hole course, horseback riding, the ATV park or just relaxing under a shade tree. Did I mention that I love to hike? There are over 10 miles of hiking trails, most being rated moderate to easy. A trail map is available at the Park Office. Regardless of if you have a few hours or a few days, Lake Murray State Park is THE place. Drop by the Nature Center and look me up. Julie Hoffman grabs every opportunity possible to explore America in hiking boots. Her adventures have included the Grand Canyon and Grand Tetons and points in between. She enjoys bringing the wonder of the outdoors alive to visitors of the Nature Center.

The sciences of geology, osteology, and entomology and so much more are showcased here. During a visit to the Nature Center you will see exhibits of the river otter, a bobcat, a live California King snake, and a Grizzly Bear (not native – whew!). Bonnie Farris, full time Park Naturalist, shares her expertise on turtles, mammals and reptiles. You will have an opportunity to observe a variety of turtles including the unusual Spiny Soft Shell. I conduct programs on birds, bees, and bugs. Most of the displays at the Nature Center are hands-on, providing a memorable learning experience for all ages.

Tucker Tower, Lake Murray’s most recognizable image, is just a 5 minute hike from the Nature Center. Celebrating 80 Years at Lake Murray State Park Lake Murray State Park is putting on a celebration! Oklahoma State Parks are marking 80 years of preservation and recreation. In April of 1937 the Division of State Parks was created with a mission of “creating places where the idle time of Oklahoma citizens can be spent in the pursuits which will tend to build up the moral, physical and mental fiber of the people.� And that is still what they are doing. Let the party begin! Several activities are planned at Lake Murray to commemorate the occasion. Early in 2017, the new Lake Murray Lodge was opened. Three challenges are on tap through the Nature Center that will run all

year long. Each challenge will earn the participant a patch when completed. These contests include a W.P.A./C.C.C. photo collection, a Nature Center and Tucker Tower game, and a Surprise Challenge that will only be discovered by talking to a naturalist. An instruction sheet explaining all 3 challenges may be picked up at the facility. Eighty years is something to celebrate and Lake Murray State Park will be making the most of it all year long. Guests might as well get in on the observance and take advantage of the park amenities. Visit the park office or the lodge for an assortment of 80th Anniversary retail items.

Gene Autry Museum Has It Going On! Concerts & Cowboy Way Fest just part of the fun! Slap on your hat and boots and get to the Cowboy Way Fest 2017. This is the 1st Annual Festival or Convening (if you prefer) celebrating the Spirit of the Cowboy! The event will be held May 5-7, 2017 with daytime and evening activities. If you miss this first one, start planning ahead for next year. Celebrities, Vendors, Performers (Music, Poetry, & More!), and Chow …including Chuck Wagon Chow! Some of the headliners include Sons of the Pioneers, Rex Allen, Jr and Les Gilliam as well as Ain’t Misbehavin’ and Three Generations… just to name a few. Please note, all events and vendors are located INDOORS! Only food vendors are outside and there is a covered pavilion and indoor seating at the Johnston Senior Center for dining.

The Cowboy Way Fest is brought to you by the Oklahoma Chapter of the Western Music Association in conjunction with the Friends of the Gene Autry Oklahoma Museum! To learn more, see contact info below. Monthly Concerts on Tap Gene Autry OK Museum hosts a live concert once a month at the museum’s large auditorium. All performers are Academy of Western Artists and Western Music Association award-winning musicians. Some of the artists that have graced the stage are Leddy Bragg & Friends, The Hanson Family, The Okie Dokies and Simple Gifts Band, to name a few. Plans for the summer of 2017 and beyond were not finalized by print time, but some great toe-tapping music is in store. Dates vary so call ahead, check their website or Facebook page. When it’s time to go to dry land, Lake Murray Marina has dry and wet slips to rent. This keeps your boat out of the elements and helps retain value of your watercraft. Dry slips are a good choice if you prefer to keep it out of your driveway and have it closer to the water. Wet slips allow you to store your boat right on the water for easy access to the marina’s amenities. This year they will be adding houseboat slips to rent.
