As the night sky grows dark, the gradual appearance of stars emerges. No, not the fake Hollywood types with their counterfeit glitter and glam. Not the self-proclaimed “influencers” that expect to have great sway over our thoughts and actions. I’m talking about the real points of light, the kind of which God scattered billions across our firmament. The kind that, if we slow down and gaze upwards, leave us in awe of the vastness of His creation.

According to astrophysicist and retired planetarium instructor, Melissa Duncan, Oklahoma is a great state for stargazing. It is easier to access rural areas with wide open night skies here, away from highly-populated cities and light pollution. She has had a love of stargazing since childhood and recommends we all stop, ponder, and appreciate the phenomenal beauty just above our heads.

NATIONAL PARK OFFERS RANGER-LED PROGRAMS GET OUTDOORS, EXPERIENCE NATURE AND HAVE FUN LEARNING! At Chickasaw National Recreation Area (CNRA), the Rangers make it fun to learn. There are programs year-round but summer hosts the busiest schedule. From Memorial Day to Labor Day, you will find plenty of events covering a variety of subjects.

Activities are offered to help all ages explore the wonders of our National Park. Morning hikes on Saturday and Sunday start at the Travertine Nature Center at 9:30 am. During other seasons, these walks are held in the afternoon. Also at this location, you can view videos that give an orientation of CNRA. Plan some extra time to explore the exhibits at the Nature Center. Pop-up Programs cover a variety of topics including history, wildlife, the environment and more. They “pop-up” at the Nature Center on Saturday and Sunday. Call ahead or visit the website.

Other popular daytime programs are the Junior Ranger and the Junior Angler Program. To become a Junior Ranger, participants are provided an activity booklet and, upon completion, earn a badge. The Junior Angler Program teaches kids all the fundamentals of fishing and furnishes a book, all equipment and bait. This activity is early on Saturday morning and requires a reservation at least the day before.

Night time is also full of fun. Friday Night Nature Walk will allow you to examine the creatures that come out after dark. Call ahead on Fridays to make your reservation. The Night Nature Walks are held the first part of summer (9:00) and switches to the Night Star Walk at Veteran’s Lake in mid-summer. (Approx 9:30 - no reservation required) At Cold Springs, Buckhorn, and The Point Campgrounds, check out the bulletin boards for postings on Saturday night programs at the amphitheaters.

TURNER FALLS PARK

IMPROVEMENTS UNDERWAY

A visit to Turner Falls Park in 2022 will bring some pleasant surprises. The park, owned by the city of Davis, is receiving numerous improvements. And there is so much more in the works!

Creating an enhanced visitor experience is the goal for new park manager, Ricky Harness. That goal has been supported at every turn by the Davis City Council. Multi-year, phased plans have been discussed, with insight from the Council, and implementation is already under way.

What are the changes you will see during 2022?

Some of the most noticeable will be the renewed bathhouses and restrooms and refurbished cabins complete with new furnishings. Also, improved parking and the ability to move about within the park will be made easier by frequent shuttles and newly installed shade structures to protect you during the wait. Safe walking trails from level 2 parking to the lower level have been added.

To enhance the “top of the falls” area, creek lines have been cleaned and maintained, inviting visitors to enjoy the spring-fed stream. Should you work up an appetite, local food trucks will be at various sites through the park to keep you fueled for fun. Screened shelter houses are available for rent and are near the primitive and RV camping.

Greater efforts are being made to keep Turner Falls Park clean and an enjoyable experience for everyone. An increased number of disposal containers will be available and a dedicated trash crew will be present. Guests are asked to be respectful of property, wildlife and other visitors by picking up after themselves.

And what about those future plans?

In 2023, bunk houses will be added and RV park improvements. Primitive campgrounds will see additional toilet vaults and shower houses. An exciting new opportunity for guests will be to stay in shaded tipi camp sites. All campgrounds are being upgraded to national park standards.

And what about those down-the-road BIG dreams?

The future is looking brighter and even more fun at Turner Falls Park. This group of progressive planners has visions of mountain bike trails for riders of all skills. Lasting memories will be made with overnights in Conestoga (covered) wagons, sleeping under the stars.

THE WONDER OF THE SKY Do you feel it calling you? That amazing night sky, with a billion twinkling diamonds, is beckoning you to stop, be still and gaze towards the heavenlies� Even just a few minutes of looking up will give you a new perspective on life� Star watching time will be even more enjoyable with a little preparation�

Of course, you could view the stars from almost anywhere, but escaping from city lights will give you more access� Avoid light pollution as much as possible� The Arbuckle Mountain Area has several public parks that are perfect for this activity� (see page 20-22 for park listings and contact info) If you get lucky enough to hit on a moonless night, all the better� This will make a viewing of the Milky Way or any meteors more likely�

In addition to rural areas and open, unobstructed skies being preferable, elevation is another help for great sky watching� While the Arbuckle Mountains are not exactly the Rockies, they do offer some altitude� If you can locate a stargazing spot on a hill remote enough to eliminate commercial lights, but with easy access, you have hit gold!

JOURNEY INTO THE WILDERNESS

Load the family into the car and set out on a safari adventure at Arbuckle Wilderness. This scenic drive-thru animal park will give you a close-up of a variety of exotic species. In addition, everyone will enjoy the walk-thru park and petting zoo.

This excursion is a great opportunity to be amazed, create memories and laugh at the antics of the animals.

Your journey through the park, with the Arbuckle Mountains as your backdrop, will showcase the expected and the very unexpected. The usual “characters” are here to give you a peek into their day. Keep on the lookout for camels, zebras, bison and ostriches. A little heads-up here: the ostrich and his camel friend are fairly certain you picked up a bucket or two of feed at the gate…and they are coming for it! Have your camera ready because pandemonium is about to ensue. Screams and laughter are guaranteed.

Arbuckle Wilderness has quite an offering of the more unusual animals. Watch for the stunning white tiger, the beautifully marked and elegant giraffe, the watusi cow with its huge, awkward horns, and the rare Przewalski’s Horse.

Add in the prehistoric-looking rhino, the mischievous hyena, and the Alpaca with their quirky, but oh-so-cute, grin. This list of possibilities is just getting started.

After your drive, stop at the walk-thru park and petting zoo.

Let the kids work off some energy at the moon bounce. Take a gander at the exhibits in the reptile house or go for a pony ride. Everyone should try their hand at the gem-mining exhibit. The walk-thru park opens on Memorial Day weekend and remains open through the summer, weather permitting.

A TRAIN DEPOT ON THE MOVE Most train depots are stationary structures with historical significance and decades of serving a community. Some are lost over time, some are lovingly restored and repurposed to serve future generations. If train depots could talk, they would tell stories of happy reunions and sad good-byes.

The Santa Fe Depot in Dougherty, OK has seen the comings and goings of this burg and carried the joys and sorrows of its people. But this depot has done its own coming and going.

This building has been moved to another town, only to return to the railroad tracks where it originally served.

In 2022, the railroad depot that established the town is taking on new life. In the ‘80s, the Santa Fe Depot was bought by the Hale family. In 1991, it was sold to the Haines family and moved out of Dougherty to Hwy 7 outside of Sulphur. In early 2021, it was once again cut in half and carefully moved back home. It is now across the tracks from its previous location and back in the hands of the Hale family. Future plans are not yet solidified, but local folks are happy to see a piece of history return

The community’s storied past earned it a reputation of being tough and it was said “if you came with an attitude, you left with an attitude adjustment!”

The history of this community is a tale of pre-statehood settlement by pioneer-ranchers. In 1887, the railroad and post offic were established. Early day Dougherty was

supported by rock-crushing plants, 2 cotton gins, farming and ranching.

Today’s Dougherty has a different story.

Quiet and secluded, not a lot goes on here… and that is just how the natives like it! Many families have been here for generations. A short distance to area attractions, a drive to Dougherty pays off in scenic beauty, whether by auto or motorcycle. For many folks, the slow drive to this little town of 224

residents is all about the beauty. Situated just south of Arbuckle Lake, the road traverses rolling hills and wooded countryside. Motorcyclist declare it to be one of the best rides in the area.

Tishomingo National Wildlife Refuge This page was funded by TISHOMINGO REFUGE EDUCATION AND ECOLOGY SOCIETY (TREES), an independent, non-profit organization dedicated to promoting the conservation of natural resources on the Tishomingo National Wildlife Refuge, as well as ecology education and responsible wildlifeoriented activities for all ages.

New Visitor Center Opens A new visitor center will open its doors at Tishomingo National Wildlife Refuge in early 2022. A variety of exhibits are offered, including orientation maps and videos, wildlife and natural habitat displays, interactive games and seasonally changing exhibits. A stop at the center before your tour through the refuge will equip you to better enjoy your time.

At the end of your tour, drop back in and report your experience using the exhibit tokens to record what you have spotted.

Start at the orientation map to choose hiking trails, scenic drives, historic features and unique habitats you would like to visit.

Streamline your wildlife search using exhibits featuring recent wildlife sightings and activities.

Birders delight in the over 300 species that may be sighted here. Pick up a check list to see how many you can find. Learning and laughter pair up at the Sounds of Nature, an exhibit with a karaoke feature.

The inspiring images provide a glimpse of what can be experienced on the refuge. Mr. Blackburn’s love for nature and exquisite skills might just inspire you to try some wildlife photography of your own during your visit.

Kick your brain into gear with the “Who Lives Here” game, matching animals to their habitat.

Move on to the “Have You Seen…” wall that changes seasonally and highlights visitors’ recent sightings. Center staff are on hand to answer questions and give you guidance before you strike out on an exploration of the refuge.

Whether you are planning a day trip or a longer stay, you will find plenty to enjoy. Wildlife, bird watching and historic appreciation top the list in this scenic refuge. You may also enjoy self-guided trails through wildflower fields, woods and wetlands, a picnic pavilion with grills, fishing, boating, canoeing or kayaking in the summer season. Washita River, Pennington and Sandy creeks flow in to greater Lake Texoma, providing homes to many fish, migratory birds and resident wildlife. Seasonal hunting is allowed and primitive campgrounds are available.

Blue River is 3,367 acres of Postoak and Blackjack timber and beautiful waters broken by the occasional waterfall. Located just 8 miles northeast of Tishomingo in Southeast Oklahoma, this area offers spectacular views, great hiking, picnicking and wildlife watching.

Well -known for its winter trout fishing, opportunities to make a great catch abound at Blue River. From November 1st through March 31st, the river is stocked with rainbows about every week. This area is managed by the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation, so make sure you have an updated fishing or hunting license, or a conservation pass for day/weekend use. Purchase passes and licenses at the Chickasaw Information Center, Main Street in Tishomingo.

SPEND SOME TIME AT BLUE RIVER A couple of not-to-be-missed events for trout fishermen are the trout derbies.

Held on President’s Day weekend and Veteran’s Day weekend, these are wellattended tournaments. Registration information can be found at Scotty’s Blue River One Stop’s Facebook page or by calling 580-371-9288.

IN THE ARBUCKLES

Small towns take their Christmas celebrations seriously and the country communities in the Arbuckle Mountain Region are no different. The magic of the holiday glows with lighted drive-thrus, parades, shopping opportunities, special time with Santa and, of course, food, food, food. A brief registry of Christmas adventures is listed here by town. At the time of printing, many dates had not yet been set so check Facebook pages or websites for each Chamber of Commerce or city. Load up the family, set your attitude for FUN, and enjoy Christmas in the country!

ARDMORE - This city knows how to do Christmas BIG TIME! Visit Santa’s Workshop, show up for the Lighting of the Tree and the Christmas Market, take a drive through the Festival of Lights, a 1.5-mile cruise in Regional Park, north side of town, with over 160 displays, or reserve a ride on the Jolly Trolley.

DAVIS – Starts just after Thanksgiving weekend. “A Very Davis Christmas” kicks off with a parade, soup & chili cook-off, cookies with Santa, beautifully decorated store windows. Turner Falls Park will have a light show set in front of the 77-foot waterfall; admission is a new, packaged toy donation. Christmas Market in the Park.

PAULS VALLEY – A lighted walk-thru display at the old Santa Fe Depot is a delight for all ages. Annual Christmas parade, chili cook-off, Christmas Market and pictures with Santa.

SULPHUR – “Opening Night” is held Saturday after Thanksgiving and marks the first night of the lightshow display that is set to music. Food booths, entertainment, community gathering. Parade later in the week. Decorated window contest for businesses. Lighted drive-thru at Chickasaw Cultural Center, west of town.

TISHOMINGO – Downtown Festival Day with food trucks, vendor booths, Breakfast with Santa, an evening parade. Walk Main St and view the Living Windows, displays built on a theme with props, costumes and community actors.

ARDMORE PARKS & RECREATION PROVIDING FUN FOR ALL Splash time at the Water Park. Free movie nights. A concert under the stars.

Kayaking area lakes. Go-karts, mini-golf, zip line, arcade…all at The Clubhouse.

Ardmore Parks & Recreation has scheduled a variety of fun activities available to adventure seekers of all ages.

The City Lake is located within the park and is one of four lakes that will host the Poker Paddle Lake Tour, a new event this year. Somewhat like a motorcycle poker run… only on the water, in your kayak. Participate in all four or drop in for just one tour.

If you enjoy the great outdoors and like being on-the-go, Ardmore has plenty in store for you. Regional Park, on the north side of the city, has great walking trails, a dog park, horseshoe pits, a skate park, a children’s playground and fishing pond. This provides a picturesque place to work off some energy, destress and get some sun. If you work up an appetite, The Clubhouse nearby has a café.

If running is your passion, the annual Chigger Chase in November has races of varying lengths. For the kids, quarterand half-mile routes are designated.

Looking for more of a challenge? Try the 1 mile or 5K. After the competition, stick around to celebrate the opening of the Festival of Lights Christmas drive-thru.

Slightly less strenuous activities abound.

May through August, take the family to cool down at the community water park, featuring twisting slides, water basketball and a zero-depth entry pool for young children. Located on the east side of town, an admission is charged. At Central Park, downtown, there are free movie nights and an outdoor concert (May-Oct). If you can belt out a tune, make people laugh, or pull a rabbit out of your hat, sign on for the Talent Show in mid-June.
