Family man who built a business
F
riends and colleagues throughout the funeral industry in Ireland and beyond were saddened to learn of the death of Bert Shepherd in late June. Bert was widely known and respected through his work in Shepherd’s Mortuary and Funeral Supplies which he founded in 2001. Bert was born in Stratford, London in 1945 and moved to Longford in 1988 to work as a paramedic. His wife Ann is well known as an embalmer and is a former president of the BIE. Through her work in Shepherd’s Embalming Services, Ann was regularly asked where chemicals and equipment could be sourced and the two recognized an opportunity to set up a firm specialising in the supply of embalming, funeral and mortuary equipment. Shepherd’s Mortuary and Funeral Supplies is a family business with Bert and son Andrew working side by side to build a company which now represents leading international suppliers such as Dodge, Auden, Leec, A.R. Twigg and Lyn Oakes. Bert will be remembered as a man who put his family first. Working closely alongside Ann, Bert was proud of his children Andrew, Matthew and Dawn and was a dearly loved grandfather of Daniel, Laura, Ciaran, Ava, Nicole, Luke, William and Oliver and his daughters-in-law Tracey and Erin and son-in-law Ted. Bert is survived by his brother Steve. It is a sign of a remarkable life that a man born in London should earn the respect of friends and colleagues from around the world who, if not in person, were there in spirit with him and his family in his adopted home of Longford when Bert Shepherd was laid to rest.
