The objective of the DESEM project is a complete methodology for mentally disabled people which can help them and their teachers, trainers and parents in sexual education. Our main focus is to create a personalised, professional system by involving those who need this education and those who are able to help in the education of the mentally disabled individuals.

How can DESEM find a solution and help educate these people?

Collecting special trainers, key workers and other professional teachers the DESEM project gathers and systematize the preferences of the disabled and works out ICT skills according to their individual requisites.

Interviewing parents and teachers, trainers and involve their experiences also a very important part of the process.

Which are the main steps of the project?

After collecting background information and defining the training needs of the target groups, a team of trainers, teachers and other relevant experts develop the basics of the methodology. In order to monitor this process, the project’s team met three times up to now: DESEM Project

1st meeting: Ankara, Turkey (01/2019) The first meeting took place in Ankara. The project was discussed in details in order to define how to proceed and develop the products, how to monitor and evaluate the quality of the results.

2nd meeting: Rome, Italy (05/2019) Our first goal was to share background information collected at national level through focus groups and surveys carried out with parents, teachers and trainers of people with disabilities. After this meeting, all partners worked to systematize the collected raw data and clearly define the training needs of the target groups.

3rd meeting: Budapest, Hungary (10/2019) At the third meeting, the project’s team started defining the structure and the contents of the training programme. A deep discussion was undertaken to identify the learning objectives, the training methodology and the activities.

Results and next steps In April 2020, the main products of the DESEM project will be ready: 1. Activity book for educators 2. Guide book for trainers 3. Activity book for caregivers They will be supporting the sexual education of mentally disabled individuals and will be reachable in English, Turkish, Spanish, Hungarian, Italian and Greek.

Despite the COVID-19 emergency, the DESEM project’s team is still working on the development of the products and will do its best to assure their high quality.

This global crisis could limit our possibility to travel, but it will not stop our willingness to adapt to the new circumstance and work for the good of vulnerable people.
