In this 135th issue of Spotlight, we continue our commitment to bring you stories and news from the main institutions of the British community in São Paulo. In our cover article, the Carajás share with us how the Brazilian Scouts took part in the most recent Jamboree, an event that brings together Scouts from all over the world every four years.

Nesta edição 135 da Spotlight, seguimos com o compromisso de trazer histórias e novidades das principais instituições da comunidade britânica em São Paulo. No artigo de capa, o Carajás compartilha como foi a participação dos escoteiros brasileiros no último Jamboree, evento que reúne escoteiros do mundo todo a cada quatro anos.

We’ve started a new series of interviews with teachers from the Conviviality Centre for the Elderly (CCE), a project with a major social impact run by the Fundação Britânica de Beneficência. St Paul’s School speaks about the importance of its scholarship programme, featuring an interview with a scholarship student who is graduating and going to the USA to study at Macalester College.

A very special article tells the story of Hilary Margaret Brooker, a member of the British community who served as a volunteer in the Second World War and turned 100 years old in June. To honour her incredible career, we bring you a biographical text written by her daughter and grandchildren.

efore the year comes to an end, it’s worth looking back at some of the important moments the British community has experienced in recent months.

In June, we celebrated the British Society São Paulo’s first King’s Birthday Party. It was a beautiful and lively party that brought together many friends and families at the Brazilian British Centre.

Em junho, celebramos a primeira King’s Birthday Party da British Society São Paulo. Foi uma festa linda e animada que reuniu muitos amigos e familiares no Centro Brasileiro Britânico.

At the Fundação Britânica de Beneficência (FBB), this second half of the year has been one of hard work and strengthening the services provided to British and Brazilian elderly people. In the Caring Programme, more than 500 medical appointments were made for elderly people from the British community and 2,349 telephone contacts were made with our beneficiaries.

Na Fundação Britânica de Beneficência, este segundo semestre foi de muito trabalho e fortalecimento dos serviços prestados aos idosos britânicos e brasileiros. No Programa Cuidar, foram mais de 500 acompanhamentos médicos com os idosos da comunidade britânica e 2.349 contatos telefônicos feitos com nossos beneficiários.

The cultural programme at the Conviviality Centre for the Elderly grew even more after face-to-face activities were resumed at Cultura Inglesa’s Pinheiros and Paraisópolis units. We currently have almost 135 elderly people enrolled in the 11 weekly workshops, which are sold out—some have a waiting list. In September, the Welfare team took about 100 elderly people for a very special day at the São Paulo Yacht Club, including a sailing trip on the Guarapiranga reservoir, yoga classes, painting, dancing and some games.

A programação cultural do Centro de Convivência para Idosos cresceu ainda mais depois que as atividades presenciais foram retomadas nas unidades de Pinheiros e Paraisópolis da Cultura Inglesa. Atualmente, temos cerca de 135 idosos matriculados nas 11 oficinas semanais, que estão com vagas esgotadas - algumas têm lista de espera. Em setembro, a equipe de Welfare levou cerca de 100 idosos para passar um dia muito especial no São Paulo Yacht Club, com direito a passeio de vela pela represa Guarapiranga, aula de yoga, pintura, dança e muitas brincadeiras.

It’s great to see the community united and helping each other to make FBB’s mission of promoting health and well-being possible for those who have already done so much for us. We are deeply grateful for everyone’s support and we end the 2023 year with a sense of duty fulfilled and renewed hopes to carry on with our commitment in the year to come. ◼

É muito bom ver a comunidade unida e se ajudando para tornar possível a missão da FBB de promover saúde e bem-estar aos que já fizeram tanto por nós. In a short speech, Kieran McManus, president of British Society São Paulo and the FBB, spoke about the importance of caring for the elderly and the ageing population in Brazil. Martin McCombe, from the British Consulate, shared with the guests some curiosities about the life of King Charles III and the monarchy.

Em breve discurso, Kieran McManus, presidente da BSSP e da Fundação Britânica de Beneficência, falou sobre a importância de cuidar dos idosos e do envelhecimento da população no Brasil. Martin McCombe, do Consulado Britânico, partilhou com os convidados algumas curiosidades sobre a vida do Rei Charles III e a monarquia.

In a more solemn moment of the evening, Reverend Cliff Charles invited everyone for a moment of prayer and introspection, and then Catherine Bird beautifully sang the national anthems of Brazil and the United Kingdom. After the official toast in honour of the King, it was time for the Hey Jude band to take the stage and play the most danceable hits from The Beatles to further enliven the evening.

Num momento mais solene da noite, o reverendo Cliff Charles convidou a todos para um momento de oração e introspecção, e em seguida Catherine Bird cantou lindamente os hinos nacionais do Brasil e do Reino Unido. Depois do brinde oficial em homenagem ao Rei, foi a vez da banda Hey Jude subir ao palco e tocar os sucessos mais dançantes dos Beatles para animar ainda mais a noite.

The party started out with the traditional performance of the St Andrew Society’s Pipes & Drums band, thrilling everyone with their drums and bagpipes. In his turn, Paul Mc Mahon, one of the directors of the Fundação Britânica de Beneficência (FBB), welcomed the guests.

About us

T

he Fundação Britânica de Beneficência (FBB) is designated, under Brazilian Law, as a Public Interest Civil Society Organisation, an OSCIP (Organização da Sociedade Civil de Interesse Público) and has been in existence in the State of São Paulo since 1947.

The FBB’s care activities are based on its acute awareness that the ageing process involves biological, psychological, economic, social and cultural transformations. Its approach is based on actions aimed at preserving the dignity and ensuring the wellbeing of individuals over the age of sixty, many of whom have found that their independence and protection links have eroded over the years and that their need for care has substantially grown.

The work of the Foundation, divided into several Programs carefully developed by our staff, have had a significant impact and made a huge difference in the lives of innumerable elderly people in need of various degrees of assistance throughout their lives.

The FBB was established and is maintained by the British Community in São Paulo, the largest city in Brazil. Its chief ally and sustaining entity is the British Society São Paulo. The British Society is a social organisation whose objective is to promote and preserve the British cultural heritage in the State of São Paulo. It regularly mobilises the community to hold charitable events in support of the assistance provided by the Fundação Britânica de Beneficência.

Fundação Britânica de Beneficência (FBB) é uma OSCIP (Organização da Sociedade Civil de Interesse Público) que atua desde 1947 no Estado de São Paulo.

Ciente de que o envelhecimento é um processo inerente à vida e de que se trata de uma realidade que envolve mudanças biológicas, psicológicas, econômicas, sociais e culturais, a Fundação Britânica de Beneficência atua na promoção da dignidade e do bemestar da parcela da população com 60 anos de idade ou mais que, por algum motivo, teve sua autonomia e seus vínculos de proteção e de cuidado comprometidos pelo tempo.

O trabalho da Fundação, que se divide em alguns Programas cuidadosamente desenvolvidos por nossa equipe, tem gerado alto impacto e feito a diferença na vida de inúmeros idosos que precisaram, precisam e ainda precisarão de assistência ao longo de suas vidas.

A FBB foi criada e mantida pela comunidade britânica e tem, por esse motivo, a British Society São Paulo como sua principal aliada e mantenedora. A British Society é uma organização social que tem como objetivo promover e preservar a herança cultural britânica no estado de São Paulo, e costuma mobilizar sua comunidade e realizar eventos beneficentes em prol do trabalho assistencial praticado pela Fundação Britânica de Beneficência.

Care Programme

This Programme organises and provides escorts for the elderly to their medical appointments. A staff of professionals assists them in their urban commute as well as in the minor difficulties involved in seeing doctors and undergoing clinical tests. This applies to the treatment of both chronic and sporadic illnesses as well as for preventive treatments.

Extended Programme

This Programme supports public long-term residential institutions for the elderly. By applying its knowledge, accumulated over several decades of experience, the FBB directs financial, material and human resources to suitable entities that work with sheltering the elderly who are in a serious situation of vulnerability. Protection Programme

Under this Programme the FBB shelters the elderly in institutions of Long Term Residency for the Elderly (ILPI), and provides for their welfare. This involves full care and the supply of basic needs, be these medical, social or financial.

O que fazemos

Indicadores de janeiro a julho/2023 Programa Cuidar

Acompanhamento de idosos a consultas médicas e exames clínicos, tanto para fins preventivos quanto para tratamento de doenças correntes. Envolve a mobilização de uma equipe de profissionais capacitados que auxiliam os idosos nos deslocamentos urbanos e pequenos trâmites inerentes às consultas médicas e exames clínicos.

Programa Multiplicar

Apoio a instituições públicas de longa permanência para idosos (ILPI). Através do Programa Multiplicar, a Fundação Britânica de Beneficência direciona recursos financeiros, materiais e humanos para entidades idôneas que atuam no amparo a idosos em situação grave de vulnerabilidade.

Programa Amparar

Concessão de assistência ao idoso a fim de suprir suas necessidades básicas, como habitação, alimentação, saúde e medicamentos.

O benefício é concedido pela FBB mediante avaliação socioeconômica e de vínculos familiares.

About us & the British Community in São Paulo

T

he British Society São Paulo (formerly known as British & Commonwealth Community Council – B&CCC) is an institution whose mission is to serve the British community, integrating its organisations and affording dignity to those who reside in the State of São Paulo. We understand dignity as social, medical, and financial support.

Our objective is to serve as reference to as many as possible of the organisations connected to the British community in the State of São Paulo, strengthening them both individually and as a group. In this manner, we contribute to intensifying the sense of identity and belonging of our members.

The British Community has been present in São Paulo for over 100 years and was responsible for the creation of a wide range of different organisations: non-profits, sports clubs, international schools, scout groups and churches, for example. In the following pages we’ll bring some articles that show a little of what these entities have been doing for our city. ◼

British Society São Paulo (antigo British and Commonwealth Community Council BCCC) é uma instituição sem fins lucrativos que tem por missão servir a comunidade Britânica, integrando suas organizações e proporcionando dignidade aos seus residentes no estado de São Paulo. Por dignidade, entendemos o suporte social, médico e financeiro.

Nosso objetivo é ser referência ao maior número de organizações ligadas à comunidade Britânica no estado de São Paulo, fortalecendo-as individualmente e como grupo. Acreditamos que, desta forma, contribuímos para intensificar o senso de identidade e pertencimento de nossos membros.

A Comunidade Britânica está presente em São Paulo há mais de 100 anos e foi responsável pela criação de várias organizações diferentes: ONGs, clubes esportivos, escolas internacionais, grupos de escoteiros, igrejas, entre outras. UMA COMUNIDADE QUE CUIDA

Carajás at the 25th World Scout Jamboree

P

icture yourself between the ages of 14 and 17, together with a group of 40 young people who have known each other, for the most part, since they were 8 years old and who have learned to live together and get by in life by camping, being close to nature and having fun because of scouting. And suddenly, you have the opportunity to travel to the other side of the world and live for 12 days in a camp with 45,000 other young people just like you, scouts from 160 different countries.

Now that you’ve imagined yourself in this context, you’ll understand the tremendous privilege of participating in a World Scout Jamboree, a significant international event designed to promote friend-

ship, understanding, and cooperation. It’s a celebration of cultural diversity and an opportunity for young people from different countries to share outdoor experiences, develop skills and values, and engage in educational activities.

This was the 25th edition of the Jamboree, held in South Korea in August. Jamborees are like the Olympics; they occur every four years in different countries around the world. The previous Jamborees were held in the USA (2019), Japan (2015), and Sweden (2011), with the next one scheduled for Poland in 2027.

The Carajás Scout Group has a long history of participating in Jamborees. Some

of our Scouts first took part in 1937 in the Netherlands, marking the last event with the presence of the founder of the Scouting movement, Lord Baden-Powell. Since then, we’ve participated in 19 Jamborees, impacting the lives of many young people from various generations who now, as adults, confirm that it’s one of the most incredible experiences they’ve had in life.

Our Carajás Troop had been preparing to participate in this Jamboree since the end of 2021 when the coronavirus pandemic began to subside. Among the many preparations, we had to raise money to help cover the costs, plan our travel itinerary, and prepare our gear (continued on page 12)

magine você com idade entre 14 e 17 anos, junto com um grupo de 40 jovens que se conhecem, em sua maioria, desde seus 8 anos de idade e que aprenderam a conviver e a se virar na vida acampando, estando perto da natureza e se divertindo por conta do escotismo. E, de repente, você tem a oportunidade de viajar para o outro lado do mundo e viver por 12 dias num acampamento com outros 45.000 jovens iguais a você, escoteiros de 160 países diferentes.

Pronto….agora que você se imaginou nesse contexto, vai entender o enorme privilégio que é participar de um Jamboree Mundial Escoteiro, grande evento internacional realizado para promover a amizade, a com-

preensão e a cooperação. É uma celebração da diversidade cultural e uma oportunidade para jovens de diferentes países compartilharem experiências ao ar livre, desenvolverem habilidades e valores, e se envolverem em atividades educativas.

A 25a edição do Jamboree foi realizada na Coréia do Sul em agosto. Os Jamborees são como as olimpíadas: acontecem a cada 4 anos em diferentes países. Os últimos eventos foram realizados nos EUA (2019), Japão (2015) e Suécia (2011) e o próximo será realizado na Polônia (2027).

O Grupo Escoteiro Carajás tem longa história de participação em Jamborees. A primeira vez que alguns dos nossos escoteiros

participaram foi em 1937 na Holanda, último evento com a presença do fundador do Movimento Escoteiro, Lord Baden-Powell. Desde então, já participamos de 19 Jamborees, impactando a vida de muitos jovens de várias gerações que hoje, adultos, confirmam que essa é uma das experiências mais incríveis que tiveram na vida.

Nossa Tropa Carajás vinha se preparando para participar desse evento logo que a pandemia do coronavírus começou a se despedir, no final de 2021. Entre os muitos preparativos, tínhamos que captar dinheiro para ajudar a pagar pelos custos, definir nosso roteiro de viagem e preparar nosso enxoval (distintivos escoteiros para identifi(continua na página 12)

Second stop: Seoul Perhaps the most remarkable experience was a visit to a public school (Chao Pho Luang Uppatham School) for a cultural exchange, where, to our absolute surprise, 120 Scouts and Guides were in uniform! In Thailand, Scouting is an extracurricular activity in all public schools.

From there, an intense cultural exchange between Brazil and Thailand experiences began. They were reserved, shy, with impeccable uniforms, super curious about meeting people from South America. Attempts at communication were hopeful and resilient, as English, in practice, didn’t work too well. We Brazilians brought our joyful, lively, and energetic chaos, which certainly left a positive

After Thailand, we went to Seoul, the capital of South Korea. The Jamboree hadn’t started yet, but we were already feeling the excitement of this unique event! Even at immigration in the international airport, we had preferential desks for being Scouts. In the city streets, everywhere we looked, young people from all imaginable countries were wearing Scout scarves.

Luminous panels covering the modern city buildings alternated between promoting Hyundai cars, Samsung phones, and the World Jamboree! The scale of Scouting was something we, here in Brazil, had never experienced before!

Na Tailândia, o Escotismo é uma atividade extracurricular em todas as escolas públicas. A partir daí começou uma intensa experiência de intercâmbio Brasil-Tailândia. Eles muito contidos, tímidos, uniformes impecáveis, super curiosos em ter contato com pessoas da América do Sul. As tentativas de comunicação usavam o inglês apenas por esperança ou por resiliência, pois na prática, não funciona não!

First stop: Thailand We decided to include a visit to Thailand in our itinerary—a “tourist-friendly”, exotic and affordable country. We departed from São Paulo on July 20, heading to Bangkok, where we immersed ourselves in Thai culture: warm, gentle and happy people. We had days filled with memorable experiences. Já na imigração no aeroporto internacional tínhamos preferência por sermos Escoteiros. Nas ruas da cidade, por todo lado, jovens de todos os países circulando vestindo o lenço escoteiro. Painéis luminosos que cobrem os modernos edifícios da cidade intercalando imagens promovendo carros da Hyundai, celulares da Samgung e o Jamboree Mundial. O Escotismo tem uma dimensão que nós aqui do Brasil desconhecemos!

On August 2, we travelled by bus to Saemangeum, an area reclaimed from the sea to become a future city surrounded by agricultural areas. It was in this massive space (800 hectares—5 times the size of Ibirapuera Park) that our tent city was set up. We settled in Sub-camp 10, next to our neighbours from Belgium, Portugal, and Qatar, with Nepal, Japan, Germany, and Sweden not too far away.

There were 20 sub-camps, each with about 50 troops or “units” from different countries.

The Carajás camp was strategically located, very close to the Central Arena, a space with a stage where major opening and closing events would take place, country exhibitions, some shops, and markets, among other facilities. During the Jamboree, we engaged in various activities: preparing meals, inviting our neighbours to dine with us, visiting troops from all over the world, participating in some of the 100 on-site cultural and educational activities (such as water slides, discussions on climate change, and 3D drone racing), as well as more than 50 off-site activities (like visiting an amusement park, an automobile factory, or a historic city). Time flew by, and we

The weather at the Jamboree was hot. We already knew it would be hot and, as good Scouts, we were prepared. We had sunscreen, water bottles to stay hydrated, hats, and, if anyone felt tired from the heat, they rested in the shade.

The speed at which information is spread nowadays, especially bad news taken out of proportion, certainly does not help.

Change of plans

However, the evacuation itself was very special: the organised and disciplined way 40,000 young people left the camp, the warm welcome from the Korean people who organised to take care of us in their cities, and the numerous activities they offered us were remarkable.

In the end, something unimaginable happened: everyone gathered in Seoul at the World Cup stadium for the closing ceremony, followed by a concert featuring 19 of the biggest K-Pop groups. It was a true music festival, with lights, fireworks, and a lot of excitement. A stadium filled with young Scouts and Guides. It was a privilege to have experienced it.

Only a few days into the event, we were very surprised to learn that the United Kingdom contingent (the largest contingent with over 4,000 young people) would be leaving the Jamboree, claiming a diverse array of issues, including the heat.

Apparently, for similar reasons, the contingents from the USA (800 young people) and Singapore (50 young people) also left the Jamboree. It was heart-

Um estádio lotado de jovens escoteiros e escoteiras. Um privilégio poder ter vivido.

O clima no Jamboree estava quente. Já sabíamos que seria assim e, como bons Escoteiros, estávamos preparados. Tínhamos protetor solar, garrafas de água para nos mantermos hidratados, chapéus e, se alguém se sentisse cansado pelo calor, descansava à sombra.

Mas, apenas alguns dias após o início do evento, ficamos muito surpresos ao saber que o contingente do Reino Unido (o maior contingente com mais de 4.000 jovens) deixaria o Jamboree, alegando diversas questões, incluindo o calor. Aparentemente, por motivos semelhantes, os contingentes dos EUA (800 jovens) e de Singapura (50 jovens) também deixaram o Jamboree. Foi angusti-

I

n May this year, Cultura Inglesa, an institution whose mission is to promote the teaching of English and British culture in this country, organised the 26th Cultura Inglesa Festival (CIF), a renowned cultural, educational and artistic event, with free entrance and open to the public.

The event took place between May 18 and June 18 in a hybrid format, i.e. in person and online. The festival stands out for its socio-cultural tendency, reflected in the free, accessible and diverse programme.

As the largest festival in Latin America focusing on British culture and the English language, it featured a versatile, varied and multidisciplinary programme, expressed in the most diverse artistic languages. In

keeping with its tradition, the festival proposed an exchange between British culture and current Brazilian artistic production, through concerts, film screenings, dance, theatre and poetry performances, as well as workshops, permeated by debates and dialogues on current issues.

In its launching manifesto entitled “Together”, the 26th CIF emphasised the importance of collective thinking and action in order to face the challenges posed by current times. “The Cultura Inglesa Festival is committed to debating, reflecting and thinking about the major issues of our time from an artistic, cultural and educational perspective. We believe that Art, Culture

and Education, as well as English as a lingua franca, are tools capable of creating spaces for citizenship, dialogue and reflection, while providing leisure, entertainment and, above all, collective participation,” commented Liliane Rebelo, Executive Director of Culture and Society at Cultura Inglesa, at the time of the festival’s inauguration.

O evento ocorreu entre os dias 18 de maio e 18 de junho, de maneira híbrida, ou seja, nos formatos presencial e online. Maior festival da América Latina com foco na cultura britânica e na língua inglesa, contou com uma programação versátil, variada e multidisciplinar, expressa nas mais diversas linguagens artísticas. Seguindo

The evening also featured a special appearance by singer-songwriter Liniker, who won the Best Brazilian Popular Music Album category at the 2022 Latin Grammy.

Drama for change Carried out in an unprecedented partnership with Scotland’s Playwrights’ Studio, an organisation that promotes Scottish drama. Two playwrights, one Brazilian and one Scottish, were invited to write short plays on the theme of Climate Justice. The illustrated book ‘The Book of São Paulo’ is a poetic guide to the city produced from the perspective of these young people, who shared their experiences in this city by this unprecedented and innovative art education project, which will have new editions published in future editions of the CIF. ◼

Inside the Conviviality Centre for the Elderly (CCE)

project of great social impact of the Fundação Britânica de Beneficência, the Conviviality Centre for the Elderly is a space that promotes healthy ageing and seeks to develop autonomy and community ties among elderly people. Ever since it was set up in October 2018, the CCE has helped hundreds of British and Brazilian elderly people by offering a high-quality cultural program that includes memory workshops, yoga classes, theatre, singing, and technology, among others.

In order for the community to get to know this work better, we’re bringing you a series of interviews with the teachers at CCE, starting with speech

therapist, art educator, and researcher, Renata Gelamo. She has been working as a teacher in the Cantar de Cor workshop since 2020 and, in February 2022, started a vocal creation and care project called Ateliê de Voz. ——— What does Ateliê de Voz propose to do?

It is a space for experimentation where we can create with our voices. We investigate silences, where the voice squeezes and doesn’t come out. What is the history of your voice? Where can it express itself freely? How can we create space for artistic expression? To do this, we do bodywork because the voice is the

body; breathing exercises as support for the voice, more technical vocal exercises; and an expressive part with reading aloud, reading poetry, texts, singing, and hearing practices.

What are the most common challenges faced by older people when working on creative vocal expression?

The vast majority of students are women; there are only two men in the class. And I realise that most of them have had their voices oppressed—not in the sense of sound, but in their ability to express themselves and take charge of their lives. Some still feel that way today. rojeto de grande impacto social da Fundação Britânica de Beneficência, o Centro de Convivência para Idosos é um espaço que promove o envelhecimento saudável, o desenvolvimento da autonomia e o vínculo comunitário das pessoas mais velhas. Desde que foi criado, em outubro de 2018, o CCE já ajudou centenas de idosos britânicos e brasileiros com uma programação cultural de altíssima qualidade, que inclui oficinas de memória, aulas de yoga, teatro, canto, tecnologia, dança, entre outros.

E para que a comunidade possa conhecer melhor este trabalho, trazemos aqui na Spotlight uma série de entrevistas com os professores do CCI, começando

We have a very open listening space and this offers a place for enchantment with the voice.

How does ageing affect our voice?

As we get older, our vocal cords lose their elasticity and moisture. Women’s voices tend to become deeper and lose a little of their treble. And men tend to have a higher-pitched voice. So there are some complaints that often come up, such as “My voice is weaker” or “It’s hoarser, it’s not like it was before”. It’s a

challenge for each of them to see this change, especially for those who sing.

And how is hearing affected?

As we get older, many people naturally lose their hearing, known as presbycusis.

I recently invited a specialist to talk about this at Ateliê because many elderly women complain that they’re not hearing properly and say that family members are also complaining about the problem. I help the person to realise this issue and advise them to go to a doctor for an assessment and solicit audiometry to see if they need a hearing aid. In addition, there’s a program called Ateliê de Escuta (Listening Workshop), which focuses on auditory perception, listening to one’s own voice and the voices of others. It won’t cure hearing loss, but it can improve perception and attention to sounds. frequência como “Minha voz está mais fraca” ou “mais rouca, não era como era antes”. É um desafio para cada um deles ver essa mudança, principalmente para quem canta.

E como a audição é afetada?

How does Ateliê de Voz impact the lives of the elderly?

The purpose of our work is to welcome all voices as they are today. In general, the work that is done with the elderly is focused on what they are losing and this leaves them in a very fragile situation. At the CCE, the idea is to work with their potential and not just focus on their loss.

It’s an important ethical difference, to bet on life and not just on what’s missing. Many discover things they never imagined they could do. It’s a very important job to promote encounters. If you don’t listen well, are you going to quietly stay at home? No, they’re going to put their life and voice into motion. Talking, singing, reading, making up stories, doing exercises. This works on cognition, memory, and alertness. The idea is to set life in motion with these stimulants.

What do you learn from working at the CCE? I learn a lot from the women’s experiences, from their stories. I learn about songs and artists that they bring that I wasn’t familiar with, I learn about historical moments, about listening more than talking as well as about welcoming diversity. ◼

Geralmente o trabalho que se faz com idosos é focado no que eles estão perdendo e isso os deixa num lugar de muita fragilidade. E no CCI, a ideia é trabalhar com as potências e não focar só na perda. É uma diferença ética importante, de apostar na vida e não só no que está faltando. Muitos descobrem coisas que nem imaginavam que eram capazes de fazer. É um trabalho importantíssimo, de promover o encontro. Se a pessoa não escuta bem, vai ficar em casa quieta?

aving provided an English-based education for almost a century, our school has established a firm reputation as a place where holistic education, strong pastoral care and a caring and inclusive community combine to allow our pupils to excel on the global stage.

A shining testament of all this is the success of our St. Paul’s Foundation Scholarship Programme. This initiative identifies and prepares young talent to become St. Paul’s School scholars. This year marks the fifth anniversary of the Foundation’s commitment to expanding its scholarship provision and giving more students the chance to access a St. Paul’s education.

Since its founding, the number of scholarship recipients has surged from just two in 2019 to an impressive 28 as we commence the new academic year in August 2023. These are young men and women with flair and huge potential who make an impressive impact around the school every day. With boundless optimism, we set sights on our centenary year in 2026, when we aim to have 50 scholars in Senior School and expand even more positive changes in our community.

Desde então, o número de bolsistas da escola aumentou, passando de apenas dois em 2019 para impressionantes 28 alunos no início do novo ano acadêmico, em agosto de 2023. São jovens com talento e enorme potencial que causam um impacto impressionante na escola todos os dias. Com muito otimismo, estamos de olho no ano do nosso centenário, em 2026, quando pretendemos ter 50 bolsistas na Senior School e expandir ainda mais as mudanças positivas em nossa comunidade.

How did you become such a dedicated student?

I have always been a dedicated student.

Since I can remember, I have always enjoyed studying. My teachers used to tell my mother that I was a focused and dedicated student who truly liked studying.

And I believe it is a characteristic of mine, not some behaviour that my parents forced on my personality. Actually, they always told me that I didn’t need to go so hard. But, even knowing that, I have always had many dreams and goals.

Since I was 7 years old, I told my mother that I wanted to study in the USA. I’m not (continued on page 24) Como você se tornou uma aluna tão dedicada?

Desde que me lembro, sempre gostei de estudar. Meus professores costumavam dizer à minha mãe que eu era uma aluna concentrada e dedicada que realmente gostava de estudar.

E acredito que essa seja uma característica minha, não um comportamento que meus pais impuseram à minha personalidade. Na verdade, eles sempre me disseram que eu não precisava me esforçar tanto. Mas, mesmo sabendo disso, sempre tive muitos sonhos e objetivos.

Continued from page 23 sure how this dream started, maybe I saw it in a film… but I’ve always wanted to go to university in the USA. Therefore, I started preparing myself for it. My parents supported me and searched for new schools and new opportunities so I could reach my biggest goal.

Is that the reason why you came to St. Paul’s School?

Yes. I was looking for the best opportunities in multiple schools. I earned a scholarship in another school before, it was a great institution, but I was still seeking an international education.

How was your experience at the school?

I had great experiences in the last three years at St. Paul’s, but there are several very special highlights that stand out for me. For example, being a Sports Prefect was an opportunity in which I could be a leader and make an impact in the school’s community, giving back the support that the school and the Foundation gave to me. I would also mention the Duke of Edinburgh International Award’s activities, which taught me about resilience. The volunteer work also helped me develop many abilities and positively impact people’s lives.

How has the scholarship influenced your life and your family?

I think it influenced my whole family, mostly my brother. Now he is inspired to study more and dedicate himself to his own growth. We always talk about school and the things I learn there. My mother also learned some English words from me, and we started to talk a little in English. I always tell my cousins, my grandparents and uncles about the things I have learned at school. They get fascinated by the things I tell them.

And now they know that I’m going to Minnesota with a full scholarship where I will be dedicating myself to science and living out my dreams for the future. ◼

Sempre conversamos sobre a escola e as coisas que aprendo aqui. Minha mãe também aprendeu algumas palavras em inglês comigo e começamos a conversar um pouco em inglês. International Day: Season 23

We were delighted to see our community coming together to celebrate St. Paul’s International Day in July. Organised by our Parent Teacher Association (PTA) for over two decades, this event stands as a cherished school tradition, celebrating our diverse community and supporting our school charities.

The occasion offered a fest of diverse cuisines and engaging activities for the children, embodying the spirit of unity in diversity. Our pupils also had the chance to showcase their own community service projects in the field. The event was a fun time for all!

We thank all for their support, especially the PTA for orchestrating this remarkable event. ◼

The beneficiary organisations this year included: TUCCA, Liga Solidária, Mão Amiga, Fundação Britânica de Beneficência and ACER Brasil. All the funds raised by the event help these charities continue to support their own communities.

The PTA marked the event by making a considerable contribution to the St. Paul’s Foundation in support of our scholars.

The Royal British Legion Golf Section

A

n effective way in which the Legion attracts new members is through its golf section. As a leading contributor to social events in the British community in São Paulo, it is a natural place for newly arrived expatriates to turn to, particularly those who like golf, and enjoy British culture.

How the games are organised The golf section organises around 6 games a year at the principal clubs around the city and, occasionally, in more distant places such as Ilhabela or even Alagoas. These are arranged by our golf captain, Crispin Rowe, in close cooperation with Legion members who are members of the club in which the game is to be played. In this way we can negotiate a reduced price for the ‘green fee’ which needs to be paid by non-club members wishing to play on a private course.

The games are competitive, and the winners take away prizes and put their names on the various cups and bowls that record the past winners. The prize giving takes place at a lunch served at ‘the 19th hole’ where after the game everyone can celebrate their achievements or drown their sorrows. Either way it is a great occasion to intermingle with other people from the community.

A few years later, a much wider diversity of nationalities can be seen (photo 3) of participants in the final game of the year 2014 at the São Paulo Golf Club. This includes 3 players from New Zealand and others from Australia, South Africa, France, Norway, and the US as well as others from the UK and Brazil.

More recent games In September 2022, our traditional game in Itú was moved to Tatuamunha, on the northern coast of Alagoas, where Chris Pontifex has built a spectacular beachfront housing condominium and, in the background, a luxury residential complex with a 9-hole golf course—affiliated to the Pernambuco golf federation. Photo 4 is of the Legion members who accepted his invitation and went to play on this

beautiful new course. Chris is standing proudly in the centre of the group.

And this year we can be seen enjoying good food and drink at the end of a recent game on the immaculately groomed course of the São Fernando golf club in Cotia, (photo 5) where new member Tomas Kim, second on the right, was the winner.

A Seção de Golfe da Real Legião Britânica Por Derek Barnes, Real Legião Britânica - Filial de São Paulo

U

ma maneira eficaz pela qual a Legião atrai novos membros é através de sua seção de golfe. Como um dos principais organizadores de eventos sociais na comunidade britânica em São Paulo, é um lugar natural para os expatriados recém-chegados recorrerem, particularmente aqueles que gostam de golfe e da cultura britânica.

Os jogos são competitivos, e os vencedores levam prêmios e colocam seus nomes nas várias taças que registram os vencedores passados. A entrega dos prêmios acontece num almoço servido no ‘buraco 19’, onde após o jogo todos podem celebrar as suas conquistas ou afogar as suas mágoas. De qualquer forma, é uma ótima ocasião para interagir com outras pessoas da comunidade.

Como os jogos são organizados A seção de golfe organiza cerca de 6 jogos por ano nos principais clubes da cidade e, ocasionalmente, em lugares mais distantes como Ilhabela, no litoral de São Paulo, ou mesmo em Alagoas, no Nordeste. Estes últimos são organizados pelo nosso capitão de golfe, Crispin Rowe, em estreita cooperação com os membros da Legião que são membros do clube onde o jogo deve ser realizado. Desta forma, podemos negociar um preço reduzido para o “green fee”, taxa que deve ser paga pelos não-sócios que queiram jogar num clube privado.

Um pouco de nossa história Em 2007, quando a foto 2 foi tirada no jardim da casa de Chris Pontifex com vista para o 110o fairway do campo em Terras de São José em Itú, nossos jogadores eram quase exclusivamente do Reino Unido e do Brasil.

Alguns anos depois, uma diversidade muito maior de nacionalidades pode ser vista na foto 3 dos participantes do jogo final do ano de 2014 no clube de golfe de São Paulo.

Tivemos 3 jogadores da Nova Zelândia e outros da Austrália, África do Sul, França, Noruega e EUA, bem como do Reino Unido e Brasil.

Torneios mais recentes Em setembro de 2022, nosso tradicional jogo em Itu foi transferido para Tatuamunha, no litoral norte de Alagoas, onde Chris Pontifex construiu um espetacular condomínio residencial de frente para a praia e, ao fundo, um luxuoso complexo com um campo de golfe de 9 buracos - filiado à Federação Pernambucana de Golfe. Na foto 4 estão os membros da Legião que aceitaram seu convite e foram jogar neste belo novo curso. Chris está sorridente no centro do grupo.

E este ano podemos ser vistos desfrutando de boa comida e bebida no final de um jogo recente no campo do clube de golfe de São Fernando, em Cotia, onde o novo membro, Tomas Kim, segundo à direita, foi o vencedor (photo 5). Este campo é conhecido pelo nível impecável da sua manutenção.

Hilary Margaret Brooker turns 100

n June 8, 2023, Hilary Margaret Brooker, a member of the British community who served as a volunteer in the Second World War, turned 100 years old! To celebrate this milestone and honour her incredible career, we are publishing a biographical text here in Spotlight, which was produced from family documents, photos, letters and information from The River Plate House archives and written by her daughter, Jean Mathieson, and her grandchildren, David and Louisa.

Growing up in Brazil Hilary was born in São Paulo, Brazil on June 8, 1923, the first child of Frederick and Dorothy Munn. Her father was born in

Brazil to English parents and her mother was English. Initially the family lived in Santos, where she grew up with her younger brother Fred. They went to school by going along the beach and if there was a storm, they were unable to get there.

Life was simpler then. Hilary never liked the heat or the mosquitos, so she had no love for the beach or for Santos.

The family moved to São Paulo in 1932, the year of the Constitutional Revolution, and lived in the old Vila Helena area, now known as Moema. Her father died while she was still young and Hilary and her brother moved in with another AngloBrazilian family in São Paulo, the Brookers, whilst her mother took care of what

needed to be done following her husband’s death. Hilary attended the British School in São Paulo where lessons were taught in English.

The Brookers had two children, Peter and Anne. Peter was only two years older than Hilary and she soon developed a strong liking for him. At first, he was apparently uninterested in the little girl who was part of his household for a short time. However, as they both grew older, they started to develop a relationship.

But by then, the Second World War was raging in Europe and the British community in São Paulo was organising itself to fund the fares of volunteers travelling to England to enlist in the armed forces.

m 8 de junho de 2023, Hilary Margaret Brooker, membro da comunidade britânica que serviu como voluntária na Segunda Guerra Mundial, completou 100 anos de vida! Para celebrar esta data marcante e honrar sua incrível trajetória, publicamos aqui na Spotlight um texto biográfico escrito pela sua filha, Jean Mathieson, e os netos, David e Louisa, que foi produzido a partir de documentos da família, fotos, cartas e informações de arquivos da The River Plate House.

A infância no Brasil Hilary nasceu em São Paulo, Brasil, em 8 de junho de 1923, sendo a primeira filha de Frederick e Dorothy Munn. Seu pai nasceu no Brasil, de pais ingleses, e sua mãe era inglesa. Inicialmente, a família morava em San-

tos, onde ela cresceu com o irmão mais novo, Fred. Eles iam para a escola caminhando ao longo da praia e, quando chovia muito, não conseguiam chegar. A vida era mais simples naquele tempo. Hilary nunca gostou do calor e dos mosquitos, por isso, não tinha muito amor pela praia nem por Santos.

Em 1932, ano da Revolução Constitucionalista, a família se mudou para São Paulo, e ela morou na antiga Vila Helena, hoje Moema. Seu pai morreu quando ela ainda era jovem e Hilary e seu irmão foram morar com outra família anglo-brasileira em São Paulo, os Brookers, enquanto sua mãe cuidava do que precisava ser feito após a morte de seu marido. Hilary frequentou a Escola Britânica em São Paulo, onde as aulas eram ministradas em inglês.

Os Brookers tiveram dois filhos, Peter e Anne. Peter era apenas dois anos mais velho que Hilary e ela logo desenvolveu um forte sentimento por ele. No início, Peter aparentemente não estava interessado na garotinha que frequentou a sua casa por um curto período de tempo. No entanto, à medida em que ambos cresceram, nasceu também um relacionamento amoroso.

Naquela época, a Segunda Guerra Mundial ganhava força na Europa, e a comunidade britânica em São Paulo se organizava para financiar as passagens dos voluntários que viajavam à Inglaterra para se alistar nas Forças Armadas.

Hilary and Peter decided that before thoughts of wedding bells might weaken their resolve, they would leave their jobs and volunteer to help the war effort by joining the Armed Forces in England. If they survived, they would get married once the war was over.

The journey to London There were certain formalities to be dealt with before the British Society in São Paulo would agree to pay for Hilary’s passage to England. At this stage the Americans were heavily involved in supplying soldiers, equipment and munitions to the Allied war effort and the Germans were doing everything they could to interrupt these supplies. Consequently, when Hilary sailed from Rio de Janeiro on February 9, 1943, her ship kept close to the coast of South America and the Caribbean islands until it reached New York. ing on board whilst anchored off the island of Bermuda before reaching New York a little later for even more parties.

There she told of facing various cultural differences including getting tipsy after ordering a hot toddy, which she believed would be a chocolate drink but was actually hot whisky.

After a month in a small hotel in Washington Square, she left for England in a convoy aboard the small Swedish ship, Axel Johnson. She was lucky that the ship developed engine trouble and had to return to New York for repairs before leaving again in another convoy. The first convoy was attacked by boats, and another volunteer from São Paulo, Evelyn DuboisKohn, died when her ship was torpedoed and sank. Whilst they were together on the train from São Paulo to Rio, Evelyn gar a Nova York um pouco mais tarde, para mais festas. Lá, ela contou que enfrentou dificuldades com as diferenças culturais, inclusive ficou bêbada depois de pedir um Toddy quente, que ela acreditava que seria uma bebida de chocolate, mas na verdade era um uísque quente.

The ship’s arrival in Liverpool presented Hilary for the first time with the realities of war. Rubble lay everywhere and buildings, half standing and charred black, could be seen, whilst beside them there were huge gaps where other buildings had once stood. She took the train to London and on April 23, 1943, she was welcomed into the River Plate House, which provided help and support to volunteers from South America throughout the war. Two weeks later she had successfully completed all the formalities and was enlisted in the WAAF, the Women’s Auxiliary Air Force.

Relationship with her Brazilian boyfriend Peter Brooker arrived in England nearly 18 months before Hilary and, by a most unfortunate twist of fate, left London for India on the exact same day that Hilary arrived there. They did not meet up again until after the war ended. He became an RAF paratrooper in India—a country he did not like. A year or so later, he wrote to Hilary telling her that he was about to be sent on a secret mission and that she would consequently not be hearing from him for some time. Apparently, he was about to be sent to Burma (Myanmar today) but then the war ended and, instead, he went back to England.

Service record From a list of four options presented to her on enlistment—Batwoman (responsible for looking after flying officers, including cleaning their uniforms), cook, Post Office work and RDF—Hilary chose the latter. This meant that she became a direction-finding radio operator, searching for German aeroplanes. She had to look at a screen and use a radio to tell the pilots where the German planes were.

Sometimes it was a real effort to stay awake, gazing at a blank screen with nothing happening. She once told us that she had drifted off to sleep for a few moments and then awoke to see the screen almost black with enemy aircraft and had to alert the appropriate RAF command centre very quickly.

She also said that Germany knew that England had radars, so their planes flew very low across the English Channel so that the radar wouldn’t catch them: they were ‘under the radar’. When they arrived at the coast, they then shot up into the sky and she would suddenly realise from her screen that they were very close and ready to attack.

Hilary trained for her RDF assignment in the Isle of Wight, where she sent a letter home to her mother complaining about all the potatoes she was given to eat but also said, “When I left home I thought I wouldn’t see any more chocolate for the whole time I was over here, but you ought to see the super rations we get every week – boy oh boy, it’s just as good as Kopenhagen’s”.

In 1945, she wrote to the manager of the River Plate thanking him for sending a large packet to her, saying “… they are more than ever welcome in North Wales, where it is practically impossible to buy them at all. No shop will let you leave with more than ten or twenty at a time, and even then you must consider yourself lucky.”

Return to Brazil Hilary was repatriated back to Brazil on the S.S. Tawaroa, leaving England on July 28, 1946. On May 17, 1951, she married Peter at a ceremony in the old Anglican troca dos maços de cigarros que foram doados pela Sociedade Britânica, em São Paulo, e distribuídos pela River Plate House, em Londres. Retorno ao Brasil Hilary foi repatriada ao Brasil no S.S. Tawaroa, deixando a Inglaterra em 28 de julho de 1946. No dia 17 de maio de 1951, casou-se com Peter em uma cerimônia na antiga igreja anglicana, no centro de São Paulo. Mas eles tiveram uma infelicidade alguns anos depois: Peter contraiu poliomieli-

Church in the centre of São Paulo. Unfortunately, a few years later Peter contracted polio when Hilary was five months pregnant and he spent the next four years in hospital. He survived, but, after undergoing various complex surgeries, he was only able to regain partial movement in his limbs. Today, there are many who refuse to get vaccinated for polio, but Hilary, Jean and a few people she worked with were amongst the first in São Paulo to get the Salk vaccine, initially only available if you had a contact in the USA. Hilary has been a very caring and everpresent grandmother who was closely involved in bringing up her three grandchildren, Steven, David and Louisa. She celebrated her 100th birthday with family and friends in São Paulo. ◼ te quando Hilary estava grávida de 5 meses, e ele passou os 4 anos seguintes no hospital. O

ne of Brazil’s most traditional interclub tournaments celebrates its 100th anniversary! And we’re not talking about football, basketball or tennis, but bowls - a sport born in the 14th century in England which has spread around the world, especially among countries that have strong roots in British culture. In Brazil, bowls is played very competitively and is fighting to become an Olympic sport!

How it all began The Interstate Challenge Cup started in 1924, bringing together the four clubs that played bowls at the time: SPAC, from São Paulo; PAC and Rio Criquet, from Rio de Janeiro; and Santos Atlético Clube, from Santos. It was a competition between Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, with one of its basic principles being friendship and cordiality among the clubs and their players. A cup was created, the President’s Cup, that represents the symbol of the tournament and on which the names of each year’s winning teams are engraved.

In 2023, we reached 100 years of competition and we are celebrating this important milestone. The first stage of the tournament was held in April at the Clube Paissandu headquarters in Rio de Janeiro, and the second in October at the SPAC headquarters. The first round was won by Paissandu in both the men’s and women’s categories by a narrow margin.

But with the second round taking place, SPAC won the Centenary Cup in both the men’s and women’s competitions.

The victory was highly celebrated, but, as the players remember, the most important thing is to celebrate the spirit of the sport: “The main objective for all of us is to celebrate friendship and this historic moment. More than a sport, bowls is a lifestyle. Bowls Brazil is the big winner,” said Francis Viu, one of our most experienced and talented players.

“Interstate goes beyond a competition.

Of course everyone wants to win, but it’s at the end that the real spirit of bowls is revealed, with everyone rooting for the players to do their best and the winning team celebrating in harmony and brotherhood with the team that didn’t win this time,” says Fernando Piccinini.

As part of the festivities, a joyous closing dinner brought together the teams, with musicians from the St. Andrew Society Pipe & Drums in the club’s main hall.

HOW DOES BOWLS WORK? The game of bowls, also known as lawn bowls, is a popular sport in countries such as the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand and Canada. The aim of the game is to roll balls from one side of the track to the other and position them as close as possible to a small target ball, called a “jack” or “kitty”. The player or team who has their balls closest to the jack at the end of a certain number of rounds wins the game.

U

m dos mais tradicionais torneios interclubes do Brasil chega aos seus 100 anos! E não estamos falando de futebol, basquete ou tênis, mas sim de bowls – um esporte nascido no Século XIV na Inglaterra e que se espalhou pelo mundo, principalmente entre os países que trazem fortemente a cultura britânica em suas raízes. No, Brasil, o bowls é praticado de forma muito competitiva e luta para se tornar um esporte olímpico!

Como tudo começou O Interstate Challenge Cup nasceu em 1924, reunindo os quatro Clubes que praticavam bowls à época: SPAC, de São Paulo; PAC e Rio Criquet, do Rio de Janeiro; e Santos Atlético Clube, de Santos. Uma disputa entre cariocas e paulistas, tendo como um de seus princípios básicos a amizade e a cordialidade entre os clubes e seus jogadores. Foi criada uma taça, a President’s Cup, que representa o símbolo do torneio e onde são gravados os nomes das equipes vencedoras de cada ano.

COMO FUNCIONA O BOWLS? O jogo de bowls, também conhecido como lawn bowls, é um esporte popular em países como Reino Unido, Austrália, Nova Zelândia e Canadá. O objetivo do jogo é rolar bolas de um lado da pista para o outro e posicioná-las o mais próximo possível de uma pequena bola alvo, chamada de “jack” ou “kitty”. O jogador ou equipe que tiver suas bolas mais próximas do jack ao final de um determinado número de rodadas ganha o jogo.

Como parte das festividades, um alegre jantar de encerramento reuniu as equipes e músicos da St Andrew Society Pipe & Drums no salão principal do clube.

Em 2023, chegamos aos 100 anos de competição e estamos celebrando esta importante marca. A primeira etapa do torneio foi realizada no mês de abril na sede do Clube Paissandu, no Rio de Janeiro, e a segunda, foi realizada em outubro na sede do SPAC. A primeira etapa foi vencida, tanto no masculino como no feminino, pelo Paissandu por uma pequena e estreita vantagem.

Mas com a realização da segunda etapa, o SPAC conquistou a taça do Centenário tanto no feminino quanto no masculino.

A vitória foi muito comemorada, mas, como

SPYC celebrates great achievements

A

s a sailing club, located on the banks of the Guarapiranga Reservoir, SPYC is always very active in this sport. It is affiliated to the Federação de Vela do Estado de São Paulo (FEVESP) and has federated members who regularly compete in their Regattas, as well as in those organised by the Confederação Brasileira de Vela (CBVela). It is a perfect place for those who love sailing and those who want to try this sport, with a boat yard, boat rentals and sailing classes for adults and children; in addition to being a space for the whole family to enjoy, of course.

This year, SPYC has been very active in the sailing scene. It participated in the

50th Ilhabela Sailing Week (with a 100% female team), organised and hosted the Brazilian Lightning class Championship and now has a member who will represent Brazil in the next Pan American Games in Chile.

V’elas Sailing Team: women’s oceanic sailing project Once again, SPYC was present at the Ilhabela Sailing Week, with a team made up exclusively of women, which included two club members: Daniela Sanchez and Isabela Malpighi, who captained the team.

It all started last year, when they rented the Ruda and put together a 100% female team. The sailors are also long-time

friends, but did not have a boat to race in the regattas. Together, they participated in the Ilhabela Sailing Week for the first time in 2022. The experience was so rewarding and the connection so pleasurable that this year they not only decided to participate again in the Sailing Week but also to run the Mitsubishi Cup, this time as V’Elas Sailing Team, with a very important sponsorship from Decathlon.

According to the team members, the team was set up to attract the attention of women and supporters of female sailing. The main objective is to have more women involved in the sport, whether it’s sailing, organising events or even maintaining boats.

omo um clube de vela, localizado às margens da represa de Guarapiranga, o SPYC é sempre muito ativo neste esporte. É associado à Federação de Vela do Estado de São Paulo (FEVESP) e tem sócios federados que competem regularmente em suas Regatas, bem como naquelas organizadas pela Confederação Brasileira de Vela (CBVela). É um clube perfeito para os amantes da vela e para aqueles que desejam se aventurar neste esporte, com guarderia, aluguel de embarcações e aulas para adultos e crianças. Além, é claro, de um espaço para toda a família desfrutar.

Neste ano, o SPYC esteve bem ativo.

Participou da 50° Semana de Vela de Ilhabela (com uma equipe 100% feminina), organizou e sediou o Campeonato Brasileiro da classe Lightning, e agora tem um sócio que representará o Brasil nos próximos jogos Panamericanos do Chile.

A experiência foi tão gratificante e o entrosamento tão prazeroso que, neste ano, elas decidiram não só participar novamente da Semana de Vela, mas também correr todas as etapas da Copa Mitsubishi, dessa vez como V’Elas Sailing Team e com um patrocínio muito importante da Decathlon.

Segundo as integrantes do time, ele foi montado para atrair a atenção das mulheres e de incentivadores da vela feminina. O objetivo é ter cada vez mais mulheres envolvidas no esporte, seja velejando, seja na

SPYC at 2023 Pan American Games in Chile This year, SPYC will be present at the Pan American Games in Chile, with a team of Lightning class sailors, formed by our club member Tommy Sumner, together with Ana Barbachan and Larissa Juk. Tommy is a three-time Junior World Champion in the Lightning Class, and also won the São Paulo, Brazilian and South American Championships, in addition to achieving third place in the 2011 World Cup. Larissa Juk is also an Olympic sailor, representing the Brazilian Navy, and was Brazilian Lightning Vice-Champion with Tommy in 2019. The trio recently won first place in the Brazilian Lightning Championship, held in September at the Guarapiranga Reservoir.

The Pan American Games will have regattas from October 28 to November 5 in Algarrobo, Chile. There will be 28 countries, 130 boats and 172 athletes (for the first time, 86 women and 86 men). The Lightning class will have the presence of 8 countries and 24 athletes (16 women and 8 men).

In the water, we managed to hold three regattas per day of the Championship, something that anyone who sails in Guarapiranga knows is a very good result. The weather cooperated and we had great wind and temperature conditions.

Brazilian Lightning Championship In September, SPYC hosted the 2023 Brazilian Lightning class Championship, with nine registered boats and 27 athletes.

Nine regattas were held between Septeme uma com Claudio (Klaus) Bierkarck. A equipe do Tommy segue agora com o objetivo de manter a classe no pódio e trazer de volta mais uma medalha de ouro para o Brasil.

A Vela terá Regatas de 28 de outubro a 5 de novembro em Algarrobo, Valparaíso, Chile. Serão 28 países, 130 barcos e 172 atletas (sendo, pela primeira vez, 86 mulheres e 86 homens).

On Saturday, we had a special celebration dinner, with national craft beers. All of this included a talk about beers with sailor and beer sommelier, Larissa Juk. It’s apple time!

O

ctober is the time for a bountiful apple harvest in the United Kingdom. And, along with the fruit, there are many pies, cakes, jams and other delicacies made with this juicy, sweet and very tasty fruit.

In the English countryside, it is common for people to have an apple tree in their backyard. Some towns even promote Apple Day, a gastronomic fair dedicated to selling and promoting various types of food and drinks made from the fruit.

To revive this tradition, we bring you two delicious traditional recipes generously shared by Anne Speyer. I hope you like them. Enjoy!

Apple Paradise: Ingredients

Applesauce Cake: Ingredients

⬥ 7 or 8 large apples, peeled, seeded and cut into wedges (sour apples are the best) ⬥ 1/4 cup caster sugar ⬥ Lemon or lime zest ⬥ 1 cup crystal sugar ⬥ 1/2 cup salted margarine ⬥ 1 teaspoon cinnamon powder ⬥ 1 cup wheat flour

⬥ 2 cups sugar ⬥ 1 cup butter or margarine ⬥ 2 eggs ⬥ 3 1/2 cups flour ⬥ 2 teaspoons baking soda ⬥ 2 teaspoons cinnamon powder ⬥ 1 teaspoon clove powder ⬥ 2 cups apple purée*

How to make it How to make it 1. Lightly boil the apples in a little water with the caster sugar and lemon zest. Set aside.

2. Mix the rest of the ingredients together in a bowl using two knives (take a knife in each hand and cross them as if you were chopping margarine). The result of this mixture should be similar to loose flour.

3. Put the apples in a shallow baking dish and cover them with the mixture.

4. Bake in a medium oven (~175ºC) for about 30 minutes.

5. Serve warm with custard ice cream.

1. Beat the sugar and butter until the mixture is creamy.

2. Add the eggs and continue beating well.

3. Sift the flour, baking soda, cinnamon and clove powder into a separate bowl and carefully add everything to the mixture.

4. After beating well, add the apple puree and beat a little more to achieve a homogeneous mixture.

5. Pour the batter into a round mould with a funnel or into two loaf tins.

6. Bake in a medium oven (~175ºC) for around 40 minutes. *The purée should be made at least a day before the cake, preferably using more acidic apples. You can use ready-made puree, sold in tins at the supermarket. ◼

utubro é tempo de colheita farta de maçãs no Reino Unido. E, junto com as frutas, vem também muitas tortas, bolos, geleias e outras delícias preparadas com essa fruta suculenta, doce e muito saborosa.

Não é raro no interior da Inglaterra, pessoas terem um pé de maçã no quintal. Algumas cidades promovem inclusive o Apple Day, uma feira gastronômica dedicada a vender e divulgar diversos tipos de comidas e bebidas feitas a partir da fruta.

Para resgatar essa tradição, trazemos aqui nesta edição duas receitas tradicionais deliciosas, compartilhadas generosamente por Anne Speyer. Espero que gostem. E aproveitem!

Apple Paradise: Ingredientes

Bolo de purê de maçãs: Ingredientes

⬥ 7 ou 8 maçãs grandes, descascadas, sem sementes e cortadas em gomos (quanto maior a acidez das maçãs, melhor). ⬥ 1/4 de xícara de açúcar refinado ⬥ Raspas de limão ⬥ 1 xícara de açúcar cristal ⬥ 1/2 xícara de margarina com sal ⬥ 1 colher de chá de canela em pó ⬥ 1 xícara de farinha de trigo

⬥ 2 xícaras de açúcar ⬥ 1 xícara de manteiga ou margarina ⬥ 2 ovos ⬥ 3 1/2 de farinha de trigo ⬥ 2 colheres de chá de bicarbonato de sódio ⬥ 2 colheres de chá de canela em pó ⬥ 1 colher de chá de cravo em pó ⬥ 2 xícaras de purê de maçã*

Modo de fazer 1. Afervente levemente as maçãs em um pouco de água com o açúcar refinado e as raspas de limão. Reserve.

2. Numa tigela, misture o resto dos ingredientes, utilizando duas facas (pegue uma faca com cada mão e vá fazendo movimentos cruzando-as como se quisesse picar a margarina). O resultado dessa mistura deve ser semelhante ao de uma farofa soltinha.

3. Ponha as maçãs num refratário não muito fundo e depois as cubra com a mistura.

4. Leve ao forno médio (~175ºC) por uns trinta minutos.

2. Acrescente os ovos e continue batendo bem.

3. Peneire a farinha, o bicarbonato, a canela e o cravo em um recipiente separado e, cuidadosamente, acrescente tudo à mistura.

4. Depois de bater bem, adicione o purê de maçã e bata mais um pouco para conseguir uma mistura homogênea.

5. Coloque a massa numa forma redonda com funil ou em duas formas para pão.

6. Leve ao forno médio (~175ºC) por aproximadamente 40 minutos. *O purê deve ser feito pelo menos um dia antes do bolo e, de preferência, com maçãs mais ácidas. Existem também opções já prontas, vendidas em lata nos supermercados. ◼
