After months of lockdown and social isolation, activities have begun to return to full or partial operation around the world. Here in Brazil, the progress of vaccination has considerably reduced the number of infected people and, mainly, the number of fatal victims of Covid-19—which has also allowed the gradual return to schools, restaurants and cultural, leisure and entertainment institutions.

Depois de meses de lockdown e isolamento social, as atividades começaram a voltar a funcionar totalmente ou parcialmente em todo o mundo nos últimos meses. Aqui no Brasil, o avanço da vacinação diminuiu consideravelmente o número de infectados e, principalmente, o número das vítimas fatais da Covid-19 — o que permitiu também o retorno gradual de escolas, restaurantes e de instituições de cultura, lazer e entretenimento.

This reopening, however, is far from being a return to what it was before. In the so-called “new normal”, security measures must continue to be followed. In schools, students must wear masks and keep a certain distance between their colleagues. In restaurants, there must be greater separation between tables. Some companies returned to in person work while others preferred to continue with the home office mode. Masks are still compulsory in streets, shops and public spaces. And, in this manner, we have been adapting and understanding this new way of existing that has been emerging and that after the pandemic has offered us a truce.

Essa retomada, porém, está longe de ser uma volta ao que era antes. No chamado “novo normal”, as medidas de segurança precisam continuar sendo seguidas. Nas escolas, alunos devem ficar de máscaras e manter um certo distanciamento entre os colegas. Nos restaurantes, é preciso haver maior separação entre as mesas. Algumas empresas voltaram a funcionar presencialmente enquanto outras preferiram continuar no modo home office. Máscaras continuam sendo obrigatória das ruas, comércio e em espaços públicos. E assim, vamos nos adaptando e entendendo o que é essa nova forma de existir que vem surgindo depois que a pandemia deu uma trégua.

In this edition of Spotlight, you will see several articles that talk about this gradual reopening and the changes and learning experience that comes with it. It is very exciting for us at the British Society São Paulo, and for the whole British community, to see students returning to face-to-face classes at St. Paul’s, St. Francis and Cultura Inglesa schools. And also to see people recommencing their sporting and leisure activities at the SPAC and São Paulo Yacht Club. Even travel to the UK has become easier and cheaper recently, after Brazil was removed from the UK’s black list of Covid-19 countries.

Nesta edição da Spotlight, você vai ver vários artigos que falam dessa retomada gradual e das mudanças e aprendizados que vem junto com ela. É muito animador para nós, da British Society São Paulo, e para toda a comunidade britânica ver os alunos voltando às aulas presenciais nos colégios St. Paul, St. Francis e nas escolas da Cultura Inglesa. E também poder ver as pessoas retomando suas atividades esportivas e de lazer nos clubes Spac e São Paulo Yacht Club. Até mesmo as viagens para o Reino Unido ficaram mais fáceis e mais baratas recentemente, depois que o Brasil foi retirado da lista vermelha do Reino Unido de países da Covid-19.

At the Fundação Britânica de Beneficencia, the activities of the Conviviality Centre for the Elderly continue online since, after all, our participants are very vulnerable to the effects of Covid-19. Although we know that this pandemic is still far from over, it is great to be able to start seeing significant improvements in everyone’s lives again.

Na Fundação Britânica de Beneficente, as atividades do Centro de Convivência para Idosos seguem de forma online, afinal, nosso público é muito vulnerável aos efeitos da Covid-19. Porém, tanto a equipe quanto os beneficiários já estão muito mais adaptados a essa forma de trabalhar. Apesar de sabermos que essa pandemia ainda está longe do fim, é muito bom poder começar a ver melhorias significativas na vida de todos e todas.

We hope you enjoy reading this new edition and, above all, that the stories and interviews portrayed here inspire you to believe that new and better times are ahead.

Retrospective: Second Semester of 2021

uring this second year of the pandemic, the staff of the Fundação Britânica de Beneficência worked hard to maintain the quality of services provided to our elderly without neglecting the precautions that the period required. In this second semester, the medical appointments, exams and treatments of the Care Programme continued normally, as well as the support given to long term care institutions of the Extended Programme, the shelter of the Protection Programme and the provision of assistance with basic needs for the elderly of the Support Programme. The activities of the Conviviality Centre for the Elderly, our programme that was most affected by the pandemic, contin-

ued to take place online. Now, however, both staff and beneficiaries have already become quite adapted to the demands of technology and learning within the virtual world. And a proof of this was the making of the mini-documentary Ser e Estar em Mim, produced by the elderly during the theatre workshops that showed their routine in times of social isolation. The images and audios were recorded by them, using their mobile phones and small cameras, with the guidance of the teacher and the social worker. The result of this was very good and is available on the Fundação Britânica de Beneficência’s YouTube channel.

Another highlight of the CCE programming this semester was the Traffic Light Project, during which health professionals gave lectures on fall prevention as well as practiced strengthening exercises and offered teaching material to the participants. The project classes were a great success! And in October, we launched a second edition of workshops open to the 60+ public that was not enrolled in the CCE. Our vaccination campaign this semester was also very successful: 100% of the elderly participating in our programmes have been vaccinated against Covid-19! And some of them have already started to receive their third dose as an immunisation booster. We made a mural with

este segundo ano de pandemia, a equipe da Fundação Britânica de Beneficência trabalhou muito para manter a qualidade dos serviços prestados aos nossos idosos sem deixar de lado os cuidados que o período exige. Neste segundo semestre, os acompanhamentos em consultas médicas, exames e tratamentos do Programa Cuidar seguiram normalmente, bem como o apoio a instituições de longa permanência do Programa Multiplicar, o acolhimento do Programa Acolher e a concessão de assistência de necessidades básicas para idosos do Programa Amparar. As atividades do Centro de Convivência para Idosos, nosso programa mais afetado pela pandemia, seguiram acontecendo de

forma online. Porém, agora, tanto a equipe quanto os beneficiários já estão muito mais adaptados às demandas da tecnologia e ao aprendizado do mundo virtual. E uma prova disso foi a realização do minidocumentário Ser e Estar em Mim, produzido pelos idosos durante as oficinas de teatro e que mostra a rotina deles em tempos de isolamento social. As imagens e os áudios foram gravadas por eles, que usaram seus celulares e pequenas câmeras, com orientação da professora e da assistente social. O resultado do trabalho ficou muito bom e está disponível no canal da Fundação Britânica de Beneficência no Youtube.

Outro destaque da programação do CCI neste semestre foi o Projeto Semáforo, em que profissionais da saúde deram palestras sobre prevenção de quedas, exercícios de fortalecimento e material didático para os participantes. As aulas do projeto foram um grande sucesso! E no mês de outubro, lançamos uma segunda edição de oficinas abertas ao público 60+ que não estava matriculado no CCI. Nossa campanha de vacinação neste semestre também foi muito bem sucedida: 100% dos idosos participantes dos nossos programas estão vacinados contra a Covid19! E alguns deles já começaram a receber a terceira dose de reforço da imunização. Fizemos um mural com a foto de todos os vacinados e vacinadas para celebrar esse

Besides 6 weekly virtual workshops, we had two online events in the last months: the Festa Junina (a traditional Party held in June) and the launching of the documentary. And a third event, for Christmas, is scheduled for December. Despite the commitment of the team and the extensive participation of our beneficiaries, we are all anxious to resume face-to-face activities. As the pandemic situation still requires caution, we are studying a safe way to gradually resume CCE face-to-face activities in the first half of next year. We look forward to bringing you good news on this topic in our next issue! ◼ feito, e presenteamos todos com esse registro. About us

he Fundação Britânica de Beneficência (FBB) is designated, under Brazilian Law, as a Public Interest Civil Society Organisation, an OSCIP (Organização da Sociedade Civil de Interesse Público) and has been in existence in the State of São Paulo since 1947. The FBB’s care activities are based on its acute awareness that the ageing process involves biological, psychological, economic, social and cultural transformations. Its approach is based on actions aimed at preserving the dignity and ensuring the wellbeing of individuals over the age of sixty, many of whom have found that their independence and protection links have eroded over the years and that their need for care has substantially grown. The work of the Foundation, divided into several Programs carefully developed by our staff, have had a significant impact and made a huge difference in the lives of innumerable elderly people in need of various degrees of assistance throughout their lives. This is how we reciprocate the kindness of those who have done so much for us. The FBB was established and is maintained by the British Community in São Paulo, the largest city in Brazil. Its chief ally and sustaining entity is the British Society São Paulo. The British Society is a social organisation whose objective is to promote and preserve the British cultural heritage in the State of São Paulo. It regularly mobilises the community to hold charitable events in support of the assistance provided by the Fundação Britânica de Beneficência.

Fundação Britânica de Beneficência (FBB) é uma OSCIP (Organização da Sociedade Civil de Interesse Público) que atua desde 1947 no Estado de São Paulo.

Ciente de que o envelhecimento é um processo inerente à vida e de que se trata de uma realidade que envolve mudanças biológicas, psicológicas, econômicas, sociais e culturais, a Fundação Britânica de Beneficência atua na promoção da dignidade e do bem-estar da parcela da população com 60 anos de idade ou mais que, por algum motivo, teve sua autonomia e seus vínculos de proteção e de cuidado comprometidos pelo tempo. O trabalho da Fundação, que se divide em alguns Programas cuidadosamente desenvolvidos por nossa equipe, tem gerado alto impacto e feito a diferença na vida de inúmeros idosos que precisaram, precisam e ainda precisarão de assistência ao longo de suas vidas. Dessa forma, podemos retribuir àqueles que já fizeram tanto por nós. Care Programme

This Programme organises and provides escorts for the elderly to their medical appointments. A staff of professionals assists them in their urban commute as well as in the minor difficulties involved in seeing doctors and undergoing clinical tests. This applies to the treatment of both chronic and sporadic illnesses as well as for preventive treatments.

Extended Programme

This Programme supports public long-term residential institutions for the elderly. By applying its knowledge, accumulated over several decades of experience, the FBB directs financial, material and human resources to suitable entities that work with sheltering the elderly who are in a serious situation of vulnerability. Space that offers several free activities that contribute to the process of healthy ageing, the development of autonomy and sociability, the strengthening of family ties and community living and in preventing social risk situations for people over 60 years of age.

Protection Programme

Under this Programme the FBB shelters the elderly in institutions of Long Term Residency for the Elderly (ILPI), and provides for their welfare. This involves full care and the supply of basic needs, be these medical, social or financial.

Indicadores de janeiro a julho/2021 Programa Cuidar

Acompanhamento de idosos a consultas médicas e exames clínicos, tanto para fins preventivos quanto para tratamento de doenças correntes. Envolve a mobilização de uma equipe de profissionais capacitados que auxiliam os idosos nos deslocamentos urbanos e pequenos trâmites inerentes às consultas médicas e exames clínicos.

Programa Multiplicar

Apoio a instituições públicas de longa permanência para idosos (ILPI). Através do Programa Multiplicar, a Fundação Britânica de Beneficência direciona recursos financeiros, materiais e humanos para entidades idôneas que atuam no amparo a idosos em situação grave de vulnerabilidade. Instituições: Casa Madre Teodora dos Idosos e Lar Bênção

Programa Acolher

Acolhimento e cuidado de idosos em Instituição de Longa Permanência particular conveniada. Programa em que a FBB proporciona assistência integral ao idoso – suprindo todas as suas necessidades básicas, médicas, sociais e financeiras.

Programa Amparar

Concessão de assistência ao idoso a fim de suprir suas necessidades básicas, como habitação, alimentação, saúde e medicamentos. O benefício é concedido pela FBB mediante avaliação socioeconômica e de vínculos familiares.

Don’t stop creating

ast week a passed client reached out to me, he told me his productivity had decreased and was procrastinating instead of getting work done. He told me he was doing nothing all day long, so I got curious and asked him how he was spending his time. The answer didn’t really surprise me. He was listening to 3 podcasts in the morning, followed by reading some news blogs and watching news on the TV. After that he would watch some episodes of whatever show he was following at the time on Netflix plus going down the odd Social Media rabbit hole. Basically what he was doing all day long was consume information. The worst of it all is that he felt unsatisfied and guilty from doing that all day long. I pointed out to him that he was only consuming information and not creating anything. You see, when we are consuming information we’re just taking things from the outside and not looking for answers from within, we start doubting our capacity and forget who we truly are.

a semana passada, um antigo cliente me procurou e disse que sua produtividade havia diminuído e que estava procrastinando em vez de trabalhar. Ele me disse que não estava fazendo nada o dia inteiro. Então fiquei curioso e perguntei como ele estava passando seu tempo. A resposta não me surpreendeu muito. Ele estava ouvindo 3 podcasts pela manhã, seguido pela leitura de alguns blogs de notícias e assistindo as notícias na TV. Depois disso, ele assistia a alguns episódios de qualquer programa na Netflix que estivesse acompanhando na época, além de descer eventualmente pela toca de coelho das mídias sociais. Basicamente, o que ele fazia durante todo o dia era consumir informação. O pior de tudo é que ele se sentia insatisfeito e culpado por fazer isso o dia todo. Eu lhe disse que o problema era que ele estava apenas consumindo informações e não estava criando nada. E quando estamos consumindo informações, estamos apenas tirando coisas de fora e não procurando respostas de dentro. Começamos a duvidar de nossa capacidade e esquecemos quem realmente somos.

UM CONSELHO AMIGÁVEL

The opposite happens when we’re creating. We go deep into ourselves and follow our inspiration, we’re not too worried about the outcome but flow with whatever comes up in the moment. Once he had a deeper insight into this simple dynamic, he reduced his consumption of content and started creating some of his own. How about you, are you spending all your time consuming content or do you venture in creation as well? ◼

O oposto acontece quando estamos criando. Entramos em contato profundo com nós mesmos e seguimos nossa inspiração, sem se preocupar muito com o resultado, mas fluímos com o que quer que surja no momento. Uma vez que ele passou a ter uma visão mais profunda desta simples dinâmica, ele reduziu seu consumo de informação e começou a criar alguns de seus próprios conteúdos. E você? Está gastando todo o seu tempo consumindo conteúdo e informação ou também se aventura em criar? ◼

About us & the British Community in São Paulo

he British Society São Paulo (formerly known as British & Commonwealth Community Council – B&CCC) is an institution whose mission is to serve the British community, integrating its organisations and affording dignity to those who reside in the State of São Paulo. We understand dignity as social, medical, and financial support. Our objective is to serve as reference to as many as possible of the organisations connected to the British community in the State of São Paulo, strengthening them both individually and as a group. In this manner, we contribute to intensifying the sense of identity and belonging of our members. The British Community has been present in São Paulo for over 100 years and was responsible for the creation of a wide range of different organisations: non-profits, sports clubs, international schools, scout groups and churches, for example. In the following pages we’ll bring some articles that show a little of what these entities have been doing for our city. ◼

Objetivamos ser referência ao maior número de organizações ligadas à comunidade Britânica no estado de São Paulo, fortalecendo-as individualmente e como grupo. Acreditamos que desta forma contribuímos para intensificar o senso de identidade e pertencimento de nossos membros. A Comunidade Britânica está presente em São Paulo há mais de 100 anos e foi responsável pela criação de várias organizações diferentes: ONGs, clubes esportivos, escolas internacionais, grupos de escoteiros e igrejas, por exemplo. fter being closed for long months, schools began welcoming students back to face-to-face classes earlier this year. The pandemic is far from over, but the advance of vaccination and the considerable reduction in the number of infections and deaths have finally made possible a relatively safe return that is being carried out with some adaptations and health safety measures. Students, teachers, staff and parents celebrate the return for different reasons: for being able to learn live, with a teacher, and no longer have to spend the day at the computer in online classes; for being able to return to a work routine without having to look after the children

at home, and above all, for the chance to meet friends and loved ones again and to retrieve a certain feeling of normality. These months, during which we all needed to stay at home, were very challenging, and full of uncertainty and anguish, but it was also a period of great reflection and learning. To find out how the students are returning and the transformations caused by the pandemic in school practice, we talked to the headmasters of two of the main schools of the British community in São Paulo: Mr. Titus Edge, from St. Paul’s School; and Mrs Shirley Hazell, from St. Francis College.

Necessary Adaptations To safely welcome the students back, schools needed to adapt. At St. Paul’s, procedures include wearing masks, measuring temperature, hand hygiene stations, ventilated classrooms and maintaining social distance. “We have also reinforced within our community isolation procedures and guidelines after symptom presentation so that parents, students and staff know what to do if they experience symptoms or test positive for Covid,” says Mr Edge. The St. Francis team also created some pathways for students to move around the (continued on page 14)

epois de longos meses fechadas, as escolas começaram a receber os alunos de volta para as aulas presenciais no início deste ano. A pandemia está longe de ter terminado, mas o avanço da vacinação e a redução considerável no número de infecções e mortes tornaram possível, finalmente, um retorno relativamente seguro feito com algumas adaptações e medidas de segurança sanitária. Alunos, professores, funcionários e pais comemoram o retorno por diferentes motivos: por poder aprender ao vivo com o professor e não precisar mais passar o dia no computador em aulas online; por poder voltar a uma rotina de trabalho sem ter que cuidar dos filhos em casa, e principal-

mente, pela chance de voltar a reencontrar amigos e pessoas queridas, além de ter um certo senso de normalidade de volta. Esses meses em que todos precisamos ficar em casa foram muito desafiadores, cheio de incertezas e angústias, mas também foi um período de grandes reflexões e aprendizados. Para saber como está sendo esse retorno dos alunos e as transformações causadas pela pandemia na prática escolar, conversamos com os diretores de dois dos principais colégios da comunidade britânica em São Paulo: Mr Titus Edge, da St. Paul‘s School; e Mrs. Shirley Hazell, do St. Francis College.

Adaptações necessárias Para receber os alunos de volta com segurança, as escolas precisaram se adaptar. No St. Paul’s, os procedimentos incluem uso de máscaras, medição de temperatura, estações para a higienização das mãos, salas de aula ventiladas e manutenção do distanciamento social. “Nós também reforçamos, dentro da nossa comunidade, os procedimentos de isolamento e as diretrizes após apresentação de sintomas, para que os pais, alunos e funcionários saibam o que fazer caso apresentem sintomas ou testem positivo para Covid”, diz Mr Edge. school and set up bubbles that separate students into smaller groups. On the playground and in the bathrooms, there are indications of which spaces can be used and which cannot. The number of students per class has also decreased: instead of 22, 23, there is now a maximum of 17; and the number of teachers has increased.

“The way they handled online meetings and how they worked as a group in a virtual way was amazing,” assesses Mrs. Hazell. “And that’s a learning we’re not going to lose, we will increase the use of laptops and tablets in classrooms. That revolution has really arrived.” The headmaster recalled that, if for some students, online learning was very tiring, for others, this form of study brought superior performance to what they had been having in school face-to-face. “Some students, who had their parents very close at home, watching everything, were more focused and this generated great results. It was a good surprise.

Importance of face-to-face contact Although schools have adapted well to online learning and have even made good discoveries, the school community is unanimous in saying how important faceto-face contact is for learning. For Mr Edge, students learn best when there is a good rapport, a common purpose and a degree of trust between them and teachers. “It is impossible to replicate that personal connection in a virtual classroom. Moreover, students often learn from each other by interacting, playing and so-

He also reminds us that the lockdown extension has come at a high price for many young people: spending hours in front of a screen, having limited moments for physical activity and being cut off from a natural interaction environment cannot be healthy, especially for a generation that is already affected by social media culture and low levels of physical fitness. “Technology brings many positive consequences and, in the right hands, works miracles in certain classes, but nothing will replace an innovative, charismatic teacher with a lot to teach, who makes the classroom a fun and fascinating place for students,” adds Mr Edge.

adaptar o material, o que também trouxe bons resultados. “Fiquei muito impressionado com a maneira como isso foi feito e algumas dessas mudanças certamente permanecerão mesmo depois da pandemia. As habilidades tecnológicas aperfeiçoadas pelos professores durante o lockdown não serão esquecidas”, diz Mr Edge.

A importância do contato presencial Apesar de as escolas terem se adaptado bem ao ensino online e até terem feito boas descobertas, a comunidade escolar é unânime em dizer o quanto o contato presencial é importante para a aprendizagem. Para Mr Edge, alunos aprendem melhor quando há um bom entrosamento, um propósito em comum e um grau de confiança entre eles e os professores. “É impossível replicar essa conexão pessoal em uma sala de aula virtual. Ademais, os alunos frequen-

temente aprendem uns com os outros, interagindo, brincando e socializando entre as aulas. Tecnologia nenhuma pode compensar isso”, diz Mr Edge. Ele lembra também que a extensão do lockdown teve um preço alto para muitos jovens: passar horas na frente de uma tela, tendo momentos limitados para a prática de atividades físicas e ficando isolados de um ambiente de interação natural não pode ser saudável, sobretudo para uma geração que já é acometida pela cultura das redes sociais e pelos níveis baixos de aptidão física. “A tecnologia traz muitas consequências positivas e, nas mãos certas, opera milagres em certas aulas, mas nada substitui um professor inovador, carismático e com muito a ensinar, que faz de (continua na página 16)

Because teaching online is like doing meetings online, it’s very demanding. Everyone couldn’t wait to get back. If you have a child at home, it’s hard to teach online. So the teachers are very happy to have contact with the students and to be able to look at each one of them, individually.

Mr Edge recalled that during the lockdown the whole team learned a lot about individual responsibility, collective effort and the importance of keeping our spirits up even when facing the unknown. “I believe we will come out of this period stronger and that this will prove to be a positive legacy from this very difficult time,” he says. A new teaching: face-to-face and online

fter approximately 19 months without being able to deliver faceto-face classes in São Paulo, Cultura Inglesa began to welcome its students in physical classrooms in June 2021. A lot had been transformed and prepared over all these months! In March 2020, all Cultura Inglesa SP units were closed due to the pandemic scenario and, with that, all in-person activities, classes and student services were suspended. A huge transformation process was then begun. Classes started to be remote, with live classes with the teacher and new tools and learning possibilities that were developed and introduced to remote teaching.

Within this scenario, Cultura Inglesa started its journey of creation and an authorial platform of Cultura Inglesa was born: Learning Experience Platform (LXP), an exclusive platform with a series of multimodal resources (videos, games, podcasts, and quizzes) to be explored asynchronously by children, teenagers and adults. We can confirm the maxim that affirms that the pandemic accelerated the construction of an ambience that favours innovation and the extended use of technology in the service of education. While the classes took place in the remote format, with its blended characteristic: asynchronous moments via LXP and synchronous meetings with our teachers, another level of transformation was also

taking place in our units. Several units were renovated to be able to accommodate students in larger spaces, respecting the necessary physical distance. A partnership with the Sírio Libanês consulting firm was signed and we developed a strict safety protocol for our employees and students, which involves everything from standardised communication to the availability of PFF2 masks for our teachers. We were then ready to welcome the students back to our units in June this year. But, the classes will no longer be the same. Cultura Inglesa enters the Phygital era -

epois de aproximadamente 19 meses sem conseguir entregar aulas presenciais em São Paulo, a Cultura Inglesa voltou a acolher seus alunos em salas de aula físicas em junho de 2021. Muita transformação e preparação aconteceram ao longo de todos esses meses! Em março de 2020, todas as unidades da Cultura Inglesa SP foram fechadas devido ao cenário de pandemia, e com isso, um enorme processo de transformação foi iniciado. As aulas passaram a ser remotas, ao vivo com o professor, com novas ferramentas e novas possibilidades de aprendizagens que foram desenvolvidas.

Neste cenário, a Cultura Inglesa iniciou sua jornada de criação e nasceu assim a Learning Experience Plataform (LXP), uma plataforma exclusiva para os nossos alunos, com uma série de recursos multimodais (vídeos, games, podcasts, quizzes) a serem explorados de forma assíncrona por crianças, adolescentes e adultos. Enquanto as aulas aconteciam no formato remoto, com momentos assíncronos via LXP, outro nível de transformação começava

Estávamos prontos para acolher os alunos novamente em nossas unidades em junho deste ano, mas, as aulas já não seriam mais as mesmas. In addition, it is worth remembering that we do not carry the name CULTURA Inglesa by mere coincidence of fate. We offer over 40 activities for our students within the expanded culture framework, involving arts, sciences and cultural behaviours: over 20 cultural activities at LXP, and over 20 live cultural activities like our Pop Choir, Drama Activities and Science Workshops. After all, learning a language is about experiencing and understanding new cultures. Now it must be said: important thing is to have our students back. A school only has life if it has students. This expansion and digital development favours the student who has more options to decide how and when to learn. We are very happy to have the units reopened, students back in attendance and a series of innovations and advances to share with them. Olympic Pride

ur student Stephanie Balduccini participated in the Tokyo Olympics being the youngest competitor for Brazil in swimming for 41 years and swam for the Brazilian national teams. In the 4×100 free girls relay, she performed the best time and was asked to stay in Tokyo to compete in another relay that took part, this being the 4×100 medley mixed. We got the opportunity to talk to Stephanie and ask her some questions.

How do you balance school and swimming? If you can find free time, what do you like to do with it? Balancing school and swimming is a lot harder than it seems. I have to swim before and after school and at the end of the week I am absolutely exhausted. It gets really hard when there is an assessment week, as I need to swim and study. I end up studying late at night, and having to wake up early in the morning to swim. When I have free time, I like to spend it with my friends or family, watching movies or going out.

You’re the youngest competitor for Brazil in swimming for ₄₁ years! How was it to engage with the team where the other competitors are much older than you? It was really fun. I have to admit sometimes I missed people my age, but overall it was very fun and I learnt a lot from them!

What are your goals for the future? What other things you hope to achieve, in swimming and also in your academic life? I want to improve my times and my titles in swimming. I want to try and go to another Olympic games. As for academics, I want to do well in my IBs and get into a good university.

What is the best memory of your time in Tokyo? Probably getting there and seeing the amazing foods there were. ◼

Orgulho olímpico

ossa aluna Stephanie Balduccini participou das Olimpíadas de Tóquio. Foi a mais jovem competidora do Brasil em natação há 41 anos e nadou para as seleções nacionais brasileiras. Na prova de revezamento 4×100 metros livres, feminino, ela realizou o melhor tempo e foi convidada a ficar em Tóquio para competir em outro revezamento, o medley 4×100 metros misto. Na entrevista abaixo, ela conta como foi essa experiência.

Como você equilibra a escola e a natação? Se você consegue encontrar tempo livre, o que você gosta de fazer com ele? Equilibrar a escola e a natação é muito mais difícil do que parece. Tenho que nadar antes e depois das aulas e no final da semana estou absolutamente exausta. Fica muito difícil quando temos uma semana de avaliação, pois preciso nadar e estudar. Acabo estudando tarde da noite, e tenho que acordar cedo pela manhã para nadar. Quando tenho tempo livre, gosto de passá-

lo com meus amigos ou família, assistindo filmes ou saindo.

Que habilidades de sua experiência no St. Paul’s a ajudaram em sua jornada atlética até agora? Aprendi a lidar um pouco mais com a pressão, e não procrastinar. Também melhorei completamente minha gestão de tempo.

Você é a mais jovem concorrente do Brasil na natação há ₄₁ anos! Como foi se envolver com a equipe onde os outros competidores são muito mais velhos que você? Foi realmente divertido. Tenho que admitir que às vezes sentia falta de pessoas da minha idade, mas no geral foi muito divertido e aprendi muito com elas!

Quais são seus objetivos para o futuro? Que outras coisas você espera alcançar, na natação e também em sua vida acadêmica? Eu quero melhorar meus tempos e meus títulos na natação. Quero tentar ir a outros jogos olímpicos. Quanto aos acadêmicos, quero me sair bem nas minhas IBs e entrar em uma boa universidade.

Qual é a melhor lembrança do seu tempo em Tóquio? Acho que chegar e ver as comidas incríveis que têm por lá. ◼

s we approach our centenary, St. Paul’s can reflect on its achievements over the last 95 years and look ahead to our future. We have come a long way since the first 88 pupils were enrolled in 1926 and can justifiably claim to be a beacon of excellence in Latin America, blending the best of British education with a distinctive Brazilian flare and combining a strong tradition with a thoroughly modern outlook. The newly unveiled 5-year strategic plan builds on this legacy and sets out an ambitious and exciting future for the school’s centenary and beyond. We strongly believe that the St. Paul’s ethos and its long-established excellence should not only be maintained and developed but should also be shared more widely, and the endowment will

support this belief. It is within this context of sharing that we are keen to open our gates to talents from within our immediate community and from further afield, to attract, develop and celebrate pupils that would otherwise not be able to attend St. Paul’s. We had a call for a very urgent need for an “RAF flag” for the family of an ex WW2 RAF pilot. It is not something that we have here with the branch. I contacted

the British Embassy in Brasilia and it was confirmed that they had one. The issue was that we then needed this RAF Ensign to be in São Paulo within 12 hours. Within an hour a solution was found and the RAF Ensign was flown from Brasilia to Congonhas airport by a Brazilian Air Force (Força Aérea Brasileira, FAB) flight that been scheduled for first thing the next morning! For those of you who do not know, the RAF Ensign (“RAF Flag”) is a “flag” that has a field of air force blue with the United Kingdom’s flag in the canton and the Royal Air Force’s roundel in the middle of (continued on page 26)

Robert Gordon Beer In May the British community in São Paulo lost one of its prominent members – Bob Beer, as he was known to all. Bob devoted much of his time and energy to the São Paulo branch of the Royal British Legion where he was a member of the committee for over 20 years, becoming president for the three years 2008-10. The Legion’s main objective is to provide assistance as needed to former members of the British armed forces and their dependents, but it has also become a central focal point for the British community through the organization of its twice-yearly fund-raising “churrascos” and, of course, the annual Remembrance Service at the cathedral in November.

For most of his time on the committee, if anything requiring hard work was needed, it was usually Bob who did it, and it is no small part due to his tireless attention to detail that these events have generally gone off flawlessly. In recogni-

tion of all his hard work, Bob was awarded an RBL UK Gold Badge in 2004 as well as a local Branch Certificate of Appreciation on the occasion of his retirement in 2020. ◼

never imagined that a movement could change a person’s life. But thanks to Carajás I managed to become a better person and every day I look for my best version. It may sound cliché, but embark on this journey with me. . . It all started 7 years ago, when a friend of my mother invited me to participate in a Scoutas meeting. At the time I was spoilt and liked my comforts, I didn’t believe that Scouting would add so much to my life. However, arriving at the meeting I was soon welcomed, loved and for the first time in my life, straight away I felt like I belonged there. For the few hours I was there, I already felt that it was an environment where I would face many learnings (in fact I wasn’t wrong) and gradually it became my family and a huge part of my routine. I consider these last years in the Scoutas the most intense of my entire life, as I was able to learn a lot, pass on everything I know, in addition to sharing important moments with my loved ones. I also look at my journey in a cyclical way, where I could appreciate, discover and live different situations. The life of a Girl Scout is full of stages and challenges that teach you, and prepare you, for your personal development. Along my journey I also got to know people better, creating bonds of friendship and discovering myself as well. I recognised that making friends was one of the most important things for me, and that in the Scoutas is made easier by being surroun-

ded by people with similar beliefs. And as a result of this characteristic of mine, I won the “Most Popular” award for four consecutive years and received other awards as well. However, one thing I am very proud of was having managed to reach the highest level of development, the Eagle Scout (Escoteiro da Pátria) badge. It’s hard to explain to an outsider that in Scouting there’s no age or maturity to make friends. You end up creating a special bond both with the youngest girl who is 11 years old and with a leader who is 40 years old. When we all have the same purpose and are connected by the idea of creating a better world, little things like age become meaningless. During those years there were many activities, camps and remarkable trips. Each one with a different purpose, but I cannot fail to mention the World Jamboree, the best event a young person can participate in, which happens every four years and each time in a different country, bringing together scouts from all over the world.

I can’t put into words how much they helped me become the person I am today, and how much they prepared me for this new phase of my life. u nunca imaginei que um movimento seria capaz de mudar a vida de uma pessoa. Mas, graças ao Carajás, consegui me tornar uma pessoa melhor e todos os dias procuro a minha melhor versão. Pode parecer clichê, mas embarque nessa jornada comigo... Tudo começou há 7 anos, quando uma amiga da minha mãe me convidou a participar de uma reunião das Scoutas. Na época, eu era uma menina muito mimada, fresca e patricinha. Eu não acreditava que o escotismo fosse me acrescentar em nada. No entanto, chegando na reunião, eu logo fui acolhida, amada e, pela primeira vez na vida, senti que pertencia àquele lugar. Pelas poucas horas que estive lá, eu já senti que

era um ambiente onde eu passaria por vários aprendizados (de fato eu não estava errada) e aos poucos foi se tornando minha família e fazendo parte da minha rotina. Eu considero esses últimos anos nas Scoutas os mais intensos de toda minha vida, pois pude aprender muito, repassar tudo o que eu sei, além de compartilhar momentos importantes com pessoas queridas. Também encaro minha jornada de uma forma cíclica, onde pude apreciar, descobrir e viver situações diferentes. A vida de uma escoteira é repleta de etapas e desafios que te ensinam e te preparam para o seu desenvolvimento pessoal. Ao longo da minha jornada fui também conhecendo melhor as pessoas, criando vínculos de amizades e me descobrindo também. Reconheci que fazer amizades era uma das coisas mais importantes para mim, e isso nas Scoutas é facilitado pelo fato de estar rodeada por pessoas com ideais parecidos. E como consequência desta minha característica conquistei o prêmio de “Most Popular” por quatro anos consecutivos, e recebi outras premiações também. Porém, uma coisa que orgulho bastante foi ter conseguido alcançar o nível mais alto de desenvolvimento, o Escoteiro da Pátria. É difícil tentar explicar para alguém de fora que no escotismo não existe idade e nem maturidade para fazer amizades. Você acaba criando um vínculo especial tanto com a menina mais nova com seus 11 anos, quanto com uma chefia de 40 anos. Quando todos temos o mesmo propósito e estamos vinculados com a ideia de criar

um mundo melhor, as coisas pequenas, como idade, tornam-se insignificantes. Nesses anos tiveram muitas atividades, acampamentos e viagens marcantes. Cada um com um propósito diferente, mas não posso deixar de mencionar a melhor atividade que um jovem pode participar: o Jamboree mundial, evento que acontece a cada quatro anos e cada vez em um país diferente, reunindo escoteiros do mundo inteiro. Além de conhecer culturas e pessoas de lugares diferentes, construí grandes relacionamentos com pessoas do meu grupo. E foi nesse momento que reconheci que Scouting era muito mais forte e importante para mim do que eu mesma imaginava. Podemos dizer que, depois do Jamboree, eu entrei na minha nova e mais importante fase do meu ciclo. Ser monitora de patrulha foi, sem dúvida, a melhor época de Scoutas que vivi. Tive o prazer de acompanhar o crescimento e desenvolvimento de meninas únicas e que se tornaram muito especiais para mim. Não consigo colocar em palavras o quanto elas me ajudaram a me tornar a pessoa que sou hoje, e o quanto elas me prepararam para essa minha nova fase da vida. Todos os anos que passei no Carajás contribuíram na construção da pessoa que sou hoje e, olhando para trás, só tenho orgulho do quão longe eu cheguei (e tudo está só começando), e isso não seria possível sem as Scoutas. Eu só tenho a agradecer a todas as pessoas que fizeram parte da minha jornada e principalmente ao Carajás. Obrigada! ◼

he Anglican Institute was instituted on 23rd November 1997, under the coordination of Reverend Aldo Quintão and is considered to be the social arm of the community of St. Paul’s Anglican Cathedral which has the mission to attend any person in a situation of necessity primarily through community work in their social projects. The first project was the creation of the Centre for Infant Education Lina Rodrigues in July 1999. This project attended the families of the Paraisópolis communities, or more precisely the inhabitants of the “Grotão” and surroundings. Paraisópolis features amongst the largest slums in São Paulo in both area and number of inhabitants and certainly is found at the top of the list of human poverty and the precarious conditions of their homes, basic sanitation, education and relaxation. The families attended by the crèche have an extremely low buying power as well as the common factor of being numerous

(having many children) sustained by a single woman (the mother). The level of education is low while the level of unemployment is high.

In January 2001, the second project of the Centre for Infant Education was implanted which also received the name of Lina Rodrigues – unit II. This was situated in the community of Parque Belém in Vila Brasilândia, a region known for the privation of the population and the high indices of violence. In 2009, the Centre for Infant Education Julian Thomas in Jaguaré was added to the number of crèches supervised by the Anglican Institute. At present both of these crèches no longer are directly administered by the Anglican Institute, but receive help should they request it.

In commemoration of the 20th anniversary of the project, two more crèches were inaugurated on the same site in March 2010, the Centre for Infant Education Ana Paula Quintão and the Centre for Infant Education Cristina Nardinelli with the result that the Anglican Institute began to attend 1.000 children aged 0 to 5 years, becoming the biggest crèche in São Paulo with 7.400 m2.

In July 2010, the Centre for Infant Education Renata Eugênia Rodrigues was inaugurated in Morumbi/Paraisópolis with 3,400m2 of construction. Another wing of

The first crèche was opened in the city of Botucatu where the Cathedral has a sister church. Owing to the excellent service offered by the Anglican Institute, the number of crèches in Botucatu and surrounding towns has expanded to seven where nearly one thousand children are attended. ◼

Instituto Anglicano foi instituído em 23 de novembro de 1997, sob a coordenação do Reverendo Aldo Quintão e é considerado o braço social da comunidade da Catedral Anglicana de São Paulo, que tem como missão atender qualquer pessoa em situação de carência, visando prioritariamente um trabalho comunitário por meio de seus projetos sociais. O primeiro projeto implantado foi o Centro de Educação Infantil Lina Rodrigues, em julho de 1999, que atendia famílias da comunidade de Paraisópolis, uma das maiores e mais populosas favelas de São Paulo, local onde há muita pobreza e condições precárias de moradia, saneamento básico, educação e lazer. As famílias atendidas pela creche são de baixo poder aquisitivo, bem numerosas (composta de muitos filhos) e sustentadas pela mulher (mãe). Entre os beneficiados, o nível de escolaridade é baixo e o índice de desemprego é alto.

Em julho de 2010 foi inaugurado o Centro de Educação Infantil Renata Eugênia Rodrigues no Morumbi/Paraisópolis, com 3400m2 de construção, e em outubro de 2011, foi inaugurada uma nova ala com 300m2, totalizando 3.700m2 de área construída, com atendimento para 478 crianças. Em comemoração aos 20 anos do projeto social, inauguramos em março de 2019 mais duas creches no mesmo terreno: o Centro de Educação Infantil Ana Paula Quintão e o Centro de Educação Infantil Cristina Nardinelli. Dessa forma, o Instituto Anglicano passou a atender 1.000 crianças com idade de 0 a 5 anos, tornando-se assim o maior prédio de creche de São Paulo, com 7.400m2.

s we gradually return to a more normalised social life, with safe openings of areas in clubs, I invite members of the British community, descendants or simply lovers of traditions and cultural history to visit this true open-air museum that we have in the noble center of São Paulo in a club format. At SPAC (São Paulo Athletic Club), in the heart of the Higienópolis neighbourhood, Charles Miller brought football to the country. We have a noble space at the club for the trophies that our team, led by him, won - the first three-time football championship in São Paulo, at the beginning of the 20th century. Also from that time are our snooker tables, which, dare I say, are the prettiest and best in the country. Imported from England, they remain in use since the day they landed, more than a century ago. Our Pub, on weekends, goes back to traditional British pubs with live music and varied entertainment. In our country club headquarter, we have rugby teams, which are always responsible for a large part of the bases of the Brazilian teams in the sport. Usually, the disputes are on Saturdays, at the headquarters in the Santo Amaro neighbourhood, on the banks of the Guarapiranga dam. Speaking of dams, we partnered with another British club, SPYC (São Paulo Yacht Club). It is the oldest sailing association in São Paulo (1917) and with the partnership, SPAC members can

use SPYC’s facilities and vice versa, in addition to having access to the dam. Returning to the Higienopolis headquarters, a delicious space we have is the bowls green field, a traditional British sport and which holds the uninterrupted stage of what is considered one of the oldest interstate disputes in Brazil - SPAC against its brother from Rio, the Paissandu Club, located in Leblon. In fact, we have more brothers around the world, the SAC (Santos Athletic Club), Rio Cricket Athletic Club (Niterói), Belgrano Athletic Club, Buenos Aires Lawn Tennis Club (Buenos Aires) and the British Club Bangkok (Thailand), with which we maintain a partnership of permission for the attendance of members between the associations. At the central headquarters, I invite you to discover this “oasis”, located between Rua Augusta and Rua da Consolação to understand why I used this word. I have rarely seen a guest arrive at SPAC for the first time and not be surprised: “I had no idea that almost in the center of São Paulo there was such an oasis”. With nine tennis courts, two swimming pools, a multi-sport court, squash courts, a three-story gym, bars, restaurants in addition to everything I said, I would say that it is our private paradise where I invite you to discover. ◼

Já na sede de campo, treinam nossos times de rugby, que sempre são responsáveis por grande parte das bases das seleções brasileiras do esporte. Comumente, as disputas são aos sábados, na sede no bairro de Santo Amaro, às margens da represa de Guarapiranga. Por falar em represa, fizemos parceria com um outro

he São Paulo Yacht Club (SPYC), also known as the “English Sailing Club”, is a small oasis in the middle of the city of São Paulo. It’s a place for the whole family to enjoy. It has a complete infrastructure, with a beautiful main building, a restaurant, an English PUB, playground, swimming pool, sports court and the most beautiful sunset views in São Paulo! It is also an excellent option for events such as weddings and company parties. In addition to the social and sporting aspects of the club, the members (and their guests) value the location and space of the club, which is ensconced in a 12,000 m2 property surrounded by the waters of the Guarapiranga reservoir. With quick

and easy access (less than 20km from the city center), it is a place of exuberant nature and local fauna, typical of reservoir areas.

SPYC Sailaway Sailing School In the wake of the 2021 Olympic gold medals, many people came to Guarapiranga in search of a closer relationship with the sport. As a sailing club, located on the banks of the reservoir, SPYC has its own sailing school (SPYC Sailaway Escola de Vela | www.spyc.com.br/escola-devela), with theoretical/practical courses aimed at people of all ages. It also organises clinics, workshops and training lanes to improve regatta techniques. In addition, the club has all the infrastructure for

sailing with a variety of boats, windsurf and stand-up paddle boards for rent. SPYC members regularly take part in the regattas organised by Fevesp (Federação de Vela do estado de São Paulo) and also in our Internal Championship. With 13 regattas throughout the year, it is one of the most fun and competitive championships on the Represa. The final awards are presented during the Season’s Closing Dinner. The cups and trophies honour of traditional SPYC families and are displayed in the club’s PUB.

Regata de Abertura Traditionally, SPYC hosts the “Regata de Abertura” of the São Paulo Sailing Season. It is a long-distance regatta, starting and finishing in front of SPYC, passing in front of all the other clubs and lanes of the Guarapiranga. The first one was held in 1956, at the suggestion of Mr. Cirill Milbourne to the then Commodore of SPYC, Bill Treacher, who implemented the race. The idea was to celebrate the return of nautical activities, suspended between September and February due to low water levels. Since then, the event has grown and today has the presence of more than 150 boats and around 300 sailors of all classes. (continued on page 36)

É uma regata de longo percurso, com largada e chegada em frente ao SPYC, passando por todos os demais clubes e raias da represa. Continued from page 35 The “Regata de Abertura” is today a great celebration of the sailing community in São Paulo. But, in addition, it also has an important social character. Registration is made in the form of non-perishable food donations, which are passed on to needy communities in the region, and which amount to over a ton. In 2021, we were at the height of the covid-19 pandemic, but the regatta was held, albeit in a different way. Registration, donations and awards were all online. Even so, the event was a huge success, with the participation of almost 140 boats and more than 250 sailors.

In 2022 SPYC will again host the “Regata de Abertura”, usually scheduled for the 1st or 2nd weekend of February. And this year promises to be special. If all goes well, the event will be a great celebration of the sport and a return to post-vaccination normality. We hope to receive a record number of sailors and throw a big party to mark the end of this difficult time that we have lived in the last two years. To make this event the most memorable of all, we are looking for sponsors and partner companies. Any help is welcome, whether with financial support, medals, drinks, t-shirts, awards. aulo Eugênio Pinotti de Almeida has been passionate about History and Aviation ever since he was a child. With the spirit of a researcher, in the 70s, he read, in a book about World War II, the information that Brazilians and AngloBrazilians had donated money for the purchase of aircraft for the British Royal Air Force (RAF) and was fascinated by the discovery. He spent the following decades searching for more information on the subject in dozens of books, newspaper archives, and study groups as well as in museums such as the Imperial War Museum in London. All these years of research resulted in the book “Operation Brazilian Bellows - The

Brazilian Contribution to the Royal Air Force (RAF)”, launched this year, which narrates the efforts of Brazilians and Britons who lived in Brazil to support Britain during the two great World Wars, especially the Second. The book tells the exciting story of people who left Brazil to enlist in the British army and thousands of others who mobilised voluntarily to raise money to help buy planes. The commitment of the community had impressive results: 25 planes were donated to the Royal Air Force and another one went to the Brazilian Air Force. And the mobilisation was only possible thanks to the efforts of the Fellowship of the Bellows, an organization created by the British

Como surgiu o interesse em pesquisar esse tema? O meu interesse começou ainda na década de 70, quando li “Spitfire Caçador Implacável”, livro da série “História Ilustrada da Segunda Guerra Mundial” que falava sobre a Fraternidade do Fole e a doação de aviões para Força Aérea Britânica. Vi que alguns aviões haviam sido usados em um ataque contra o general Erwin Von Rommel, um personagem famoso da Segunda Guerra Mundial. A partir daí, comecei a pesquisar e fui encontrando documentos e juntando as informações. No total, foram doados 26 aviões, sendo 16 Spitfires, 9 Typhoons e 1 bombardeio para a Força Aérea Brasileira possibilitada por valores muito significativos de dinheiro arrecadado por todo país. Para

se ter uma ideia, cada avião custava em média 5 mil libras esterlinas, então, estamos falando de cerca de 40 milhões de reais que foram arrecadados no boca a boca ou por telefone. Toda essa doação era coordenada por essa organização chamada Fraternidade do Fole.

Isso mostra um grande engajamento por parte de brasileiros e britânicos que moravam aqui no Brasil, certo? Sim, muito grande. Praticamente todas as capitais e algumas cidades do interior do Brasil, como Pelotas (RS) e outras no Paraná participaram da campanha. A partir de 1940, alguns anglo brasileiros foram pra Inglaterra pra se alistar. E quem ficou, quis colaborar. Havia muita propaganda do governo britânico para que a população fizesse a sua parte, teve doação de panelas de alumínio na Inglaterra pra construção

de avião e, por aqui, esse movimento chegou também. A população civil da Inglaterra e britânicos ao redor do mundo foram arrecadar dinheiro para ajudar a Grã-Bretanha a combater o nazismo. A Fraternidade do Fole foi muito forte aqui na América Latina, especialmente na Argentina. No Brasil, a organização começa a crescer principalmente a partir de 1942, quando o país entra oficialmente na guerra, ao lado dos Aliados. Ao final de 1943, houve um grande volume de doações do Brasil para a Força Aérea Britânica.

How did your interest in researching this subject come about?

Bellows and the donation of planes to the British Air Force. I saw that some planes had been used in an attack against General Erwin Von Rommel, a famous character of World War II. From then on, I started researching and found documents and put the information together. A total of 26 planes were donated, being 16 Spitfires, 9 Typhoons and 1 bombing for the Brazilian Air Force made possible by very significant amounts of money raised. To give you an idea, each plane cost an average of 5 thousand pounds, so we’re talking about 40 million reais that were collected through word of mouth or by telephone. This entire donation was coordinated by this organisation called Fraternidade do Fole.

In this exclusive interview, the author tells us more details about his research and about the important and little known participation of the British community in Brazil to help the British during the challenging years of World War II.

Yes, very much so. Practically all capitals and some cities in the interior of Brazil, like Pelotas (RS) and others in Paraná took part in the campaign. From 1940 onwards, some Anglo Brazilians went to England to enlist. And those who stayed wanted to collaborate. There was a lot of propaganda from the British government for the population to do their part, there was the donation of aluminium pans in England for the construction of an aeroplane and, over here, this movement also arrived. The civilian population of England and British people all over the world set out to raise money to help Great Britain fight Nazism. The Bellows Fraternity was very strong here in Latin America, especially in Argentina. In Brazil, the organisation started to grow mainly from 1942, (continued on page 40)

Muitos saíram do Brasil e foram pra Europa combater e morreram em combate, inclusive. Eles não precisavam necessariamente ir, mas atenderam a um chamado de sua pátria e foram.

Como foi fazer a pesquisa sobre o tema aqui no Brasil? O que você encontrou de informação relevante? Consegui muita coisa nos arquivos dos jornais da época, sobre britânicos que participaram da guerra e sobre os anúncios da Fraternidade do Fole. A partir de 2006, a Biblioteca Nacional digitalizou um

acervo muito grande de jornais e a Folha de São Paulo também começou a disponibilizar seu arquivo a partir da década de 40. Então, isso ajudou muito. Depois eu entrevistei duas senhoras aqui em São Paulo: Mrs Gladys E. Sinclair e Mrs Gillian Pepper. E com elas, tive impressões pessoais de quem participou de fato das arrecadações de dinheiro e de todo o movimento das doações que aconteceram no Brasil. No Colégio St. Paul’s, a Carmen Sapsezian me ajudou com informações sobre a arrecadação de fundos para a compra de passagens para que ex-alunos fossem para Inglaterra se alistar nas Forças Armadas Britânicas. E o Robert Beer, da Royal British Legion, me passou muitas informações, inclusive uma lista com mais de 300 britânicos que tinham saído do Brasil para combater na guerra. Outra pessoa que me ajudou foi o Ian Thomas

Yes. In Brazil little was said about World War II, it seemed that it was something very distant. But here there were many English, French, Poles, and people lived in anguish. Many left Brazil and went to Europe to fight and even died in combat. They didn’t necessarily have to go, but they answered a call from their homeland and went.

No livro, você destaca a participação das mulheres nesse movimento. De que forma elas contribuíram? Foram elas que fizeram uma primeira iniciativa de apoio. Em 1940, a Sra Minnie Smaggasgale, que era enfermeira chefe do Hospital dos Estrangeiros no Rio de Janeiro, já juntava dinheiro pra enviar para fora. E ela fez uma pousada para marinheiros estrangeiros que vinham pro Brasil durante a guerra, era uma pessoa importante na comunidade e fez um grande esforço pra arrecadar dinheiro. Além disso, mulheres como a Miss Gylian e outras, que tinham por volta de 18 e 20 anos na época, eram quem realmente trabalha-

What was it like doing research on the subject here in Brazil? What relevant information did you find? I found a lot in the newspaper archives of the time, about British people who participated in the war and about the advertisements of the Fellowship of the Bellows. Starting in 2006, the National Library digitalised a very large collection of newspapers and the Folha de São Paulo also began to make available its archives from the 1940s. So, this helped a lot. Then I interviewed two ladies here in São Paulo: Mrs. Gladys E. Sinclair and Mrs. Gillian Pepper. And, with them, I obtained personal impressions of those who actually participated in raising the money and the whole movement of donations that happened in Brazil. At St. Paul’s School, Carmen Sapsezian helped me with information about fundraising to buy tickets for former students to go to vam na arrecadação de dinheiro. England to join the British Armed Forces. And Robert Beer, from the Royal British Legion, gave me a lot of information, including a list of more than 300 British people who had left Brazil to fight in the war. Another person who helped me was Ian Thomas Comber, who was director of the Tam Museum and did an article in the magazine Wings about the Bellows Fraternity. I found quite a lot here.

In the book, you highlight the participation of women in this movement. In what way did they contribute? It was they who had took the first initiative of giving support. In 1940, Mrs. Minnie Smaggasgale, who was the head nurse of the Foreigners’ Hospital in Rio de Janeiro, was already collecting money to send abroad. She built a hostel for foreign sailors who came to Brazil during the war, was

an important person in the community and made a great effort to raise money. Also, women like Miss Gylian and others, who were around 18 and 20 years old at the time, were the ones who really worked at raising money. The management of the Fellowship of the Bellow was made up of company directors, bank directors, and they didn’t spend their days running after donations and campaign memberships. It was the women and the younger boys who played this important role! They who went out to the factories, companies and houses to talk to people and collect donations. And there were also young women who went to Great Britain to participate in the Auxiliary Air Force and served in transporting planes from the factory to the combat units. Was there a moment in history or a character that caught your attention the most during your research? It’s exciting to find information you’re looking for during research, to know what happened to each plane and the people. The Wing Commander Richard A Wellington’s speech in January 1944 in São Paulo is very moving. He went to war at the age of 23 and, when he returned, he came to Brazil to give lectures on the war, at the request of the British Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He

É emocionante encontrar informações que você está procurando durante uma pesquisa, saber o que aconteceu com cada avião e com as pessoas. O discurso do Wing Commander Richard Anthony Wellington em janeiro de 1944 feito aqui em São Paulo é muito impactante. Chicken Ballotine

he great thing about chicken ballotine is that you can stuff it with anything you like; leeks, olives, pistachio, almonds, mushrooms, chorizo, truffle, cheese, spinach, just to name a few options. Simple to prepare, easy to cook AND it looks absolutely great on the plate! So, this is our recipe giving you what you need to make your very own chicken ballotine.

Chicken Breast stuffed with Leeks and Brazil Nuts served with a Jabuticaba Sauce Serves 4

⬥ 4 chicken breasts ⬥ 12 – 16 slices of good quality bacon or Parma ham ⬥ 1 leek, chopped ⬥ 1 shallot or small red onion, chopped ⬥ 1/2 cup chopped Brazil Nuts ⬥ 1 garlic clove, chopped ⬥ 1/4 cup chopped fresh tarragon (if you can find it; this herb goes really well with chicken)

Method 1. Using a frying pan with a glug of Olive oil, sweat down the leeks, onion and garlic, with a sprinkle of salt and pepper (S+P) until soft – about 5 minutes. Add the Brazil nuts, give it all a good stir and then take off the heat. A great option for some

extra flavour is to brown the nuts beforehand in a separate frying pan, just a minute or so and without any oil or butter, on a low / medium heat, just until they start browning. 2. Slice all the chicken breasts lengthways, without cutting all the way through (as if you were creating a book). 3. On a clean surface, spread out a good sized piece of cling film (roughly A4 size). Place the bacon/ham in the centre, with the slices overlapping so it covers an area larger than the chicken. Place the breast on top, season with S+P then spread a thin layer of the leek mixture/filling over the middle part of the chicken breast (roughly (continued on page 44)

Recheado de peito de frango com alho-poró e castanha-do-pará servidos com molho de jabuticaba Para 4 pessoas

Ingredientes ⬥ 4 Peitos de frango ⬥ 12 - 16 fatias de bacon ou presunto de Parma de boa qualidade ⬥ 1 alho-poró picado ⬥ 1 chalota ou cebola vermelha pequena picada ⬥ 1/2 xícara de castanhas-do-pará ⬥ 1 dente de alho picado ⬥ 1/4 copo de estragão fresco picado (opcional - esta erva vai muito bem com frango)

Preparo 1. Utilizando uma frigideira com uma pitada de azeite de oliva, cozinhe no vapor o alhoporó, a cebola e o alho, com um pouco de sal e pimenta até ficar macio - cerca de 5

minutos. Adicione as castanhas-do-pará, mexa tudo e depois retire do fogo. Uma ótima opção para dar um sabor extra é dourar as castanhas com antecedência em uma frigideira separada, apenas um minuto ou mais e sem óleo ou manteiga, em fogo baixo/médio, apenas até começarem a dourar. 2. Fatie todos os peitos de frango no comprimento, sem cortar até o fim (como se você estivesse criando um livro). 3. Em uma superfície limpa, espalhe um pedaço de bom tamanho de filme de PVC para uso com alimentos (aproximadamente tamanho A4). Coloque o bacon/presunto no centro, com as fatias sobrepostas, de modo que cubra uma área maior do que a (continua na página 44)

To Cook 1. Bring a pan of water to a simmer and poach the ballotines for about 20 minutes. Ensure the water maintains a light simmer rather than hard boiling. If you’re serving with risotto, this is when to start cooking that but also a good time to start preparing the sauce. 2. After 20 minutes or so, unwrap the chicken and brown off the ballotines in a frying pan with some olive oil or butter, just for a couple of minutes until all sides have a lovely golden colour.

350ml vegetable stock* or water 25g butter 2 tbsp of plain flour 1 small onion 1 tbsp of jam (blackcurrant, jabuticaba, mulberry or similar) ⬥ Good splash of red wine

4. Add a heaped spoon of jam and give it a good stir. 5. Simmer until you reach the desired consistency (the longer it cooks the thicker it will get). For a super smooth texture pass through a sieve. Return the sauce back to the pan, bring it to a boil then turn off the heat before finally adding in the butter.

Method

To Serve

1. Finely chop the onion and add to the same pan you browned the ballotine with some olive oil on a medium heat. Leave for 3 minutes stirring now and then, scraping the bottom of the pan. 2. Pour in a good splash of red wine and leave for about 2-3 minutes. 3. Add 2 tbsp of plain flour to the onion, stir well and cook for a further minute Then add the stock slowly, continually stirring well to lose any possible lumps.

Cut off the very ends of the ballotine using a sharp knife before then cutting in half at an angle. Plate and serve with the sauce alongside the risotto, a fresh salad, mash, rice or whatever you choose. And that’s it - Enjoy and Bon Appetit! ◼
