2018 YEAR IN REVIEW LIVE THE ARTS IN FULTON COUNTY!Â

MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR Fiscal year 2018 was a banner and inspiring year for the Fulton County Department of Arts and Culture. Under the strategic priority area of “Ensuring that All People’s Lives Are Culturally Enriched,” we remained committed to elevating the arts to the forefront of public consciousness. As the largest public funder of the arts in the state of Georgia and second leading employer in the region with 20,000 jobs and $619,000,000 of economic activity annually, the creative industry remained a top economic generating engine for the region.

In 2018, we engaged residents in unprecedented numbers and expanded opportunities to meet the continuing demands of our constituents. Awesomely, our major programs continued to affect the real lives of our citizens. The Contracts for Services Program grew and continued to provide significant online program offerings to artists, arts organizations and cultural groups from all quadrants of the County. The Public Art

public art works in communities and neighborhoods for all to enjoy.

We witnessed the growing importance of arts engagement experiences at the arts centers for participants of all ages and creative abilities. Moreover, we enriched the lives of residents with major partnerships with the Department of Senior Services, the Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities through the Living Out Loud: Senior Arts Program, and the and Creative Like Me Initiative. We were equally proud to have partnered with NEWorks Productions and Goethe Institute on international programming that brought more focus and attention to Fulton County’s cultural community.

Moving forward, Fulton County Arts and Culture will remain steadfast to providing the highest customer service possible for the full benefit of all residents and visitors, as we strive to be the best and most responsive arts agency in the country. VISION In 1979, the Fulton County Board of Commissioners created the FCAC to enhance the quality of life of its constituents. CONTRACTS FOR SERVICES (CFS) The CFS Program seeks to strengthen the cultural health of individuals, organizations and communities by awarding funding and providing technical assistance to non-profit organizations whose arts programming supports arts and cultural services to Fulton County residents. The Fulton County Public Art Program was initiated in 1993 when the Fulton County Board of Commissioners adopted the Art in Public Places Resolution which stipulates that one percent of the cost of acquisition, renovation or construction of any Fulton County building or facility must be set aside for the fabrication, installation and ongoing maintenance of public art work.

CELEBRATING 25 YEARS Fulton County Public Art Program celebrates 25 years of enriching the lives of Fulton County residents with the publishing of an anniversary catalog commemorating the Art in Public Places Resolution, established in 1993 by the Fulton County Board of Commissioners.

FINE ART ACQUISITION PROGRAM The 2018 Fulton County Arts & Fine Art Acquisition Program features 114 pieces of art created by 81 Georgia-based artists, representing an investment of over $200,000 into the Georgia arts community, with $180,000 invested into Greater Metro Atlanta. 44% of the acquired artists are Fulton County based and the artwork will be installed in 14 libraries currently under renovation. An exhibition in partnership with WRS, Real Estate Management was presented in early 2019 to experience the collection in its entirety at the Underground Atlanta.

ARTS CENTERS The Fulton County Department of Arts & Culture operates five art centers; Abernathy Arts Center, Aviation Community Cultural Center, South Fulton Arts Center, Southwest Arts Center Performance Theater and Gallery, West End Performing Arts Center and also participates in a public/private partnership with Johns Creek Arts Center and the Hammonds House Museum. Â

Through community based centers, Fulton County Arts & Culture provides Fulton County residents with direct services in the arts to include: arts instruction for all ages and most disciplines including visual art, dance, theatre, music, multimedia, creative writing and quilting. The Art Centers also produce arts and cultural events throughout the year including; exhibitions, plays, concerts, poetry readings, book-signings, dance concerts and many others.

ABERNATHY ARTS CENTER

Abernathy Arts Center is Fulton County’s oldest neighborhood Arts Center dedicated to providing quality arts instruction to the community in a warm and friendly environment since 1974. Abernathy Arts Center offers a broad range of day and evening classes for adults and children, as well as other arts and cultural programming.The gallery features regular exhibits which provide exhibition opportunities for students, faculty, professional and emerging artists.

AVIATION COMMUNITY CULTURAL CENTER The Aviation Community Cultural Center honors the men and women of Fulton County who have distinguished

themselves in aviation, provide dedicated arts educational programming, and provide a new community center resource for the residents of Fulton County. The aviation education center preserves the legacy of the Tuskegee Airmen and the role they played in aviation history. The center continues to promote community unity with helping to support economic, aviation and cultural growth along the Fulton Industrial Boulevard corridor.

SOUTHWEST ARTS CENTER

In 2001, Fulton County opened Southwest Arts Center, the first facility built by the county solely for the arts. Located on a 27-acre campus in the quiet Cascade community, Southwest Arts Center features classroom space, a large dance studio, music suite, a fine art gallery, an 80-seat Black Box Theater, and a 375- seat Performance Theater. The facility host over 250 events annually.

JOHNS CREEK ARTS CENTER Johns Creek Arts Center offers classes, camps and workshops in Sculptural and Functional Ceramics, Visual Arts, Photography, Jewelry, and Mosaics for artists of all ages and hosts the largest summer arts camp in Fulton County.

Johns Creek Community Arts Center operates under a public/private partnership between the Ocee Community Arts Organization and Fulton County Government.

HAMMONDS HOUSE MUSEUM

Nestled on a quiet residential street in Atlanta’s historic West End, Hammonds House Museum is a unique setting to explore the cultural diversity and legacy of artists of African descent. The Museum is the former residence of the late Dr. Otis Thrash Hammonds, a prominent Atlanta physician and a passionate arts patron. Shortly after his death in June 1985, the Fulton County Board of Commissioners under the leadership of Chairman Michael Lomax purchased the house and the collection of 250 artworks which Dr. Hammonds had amassed over the years.

Hammonds House Museum boasts a permanent collection of more than 350 works dating from the mid-19th century by artists from America, Africa, and the Caribbean. Highlights of the collection include 18 works by master artist Romare Bearden and the oldest known painting by acclaimed landscape artist Robert S. Duncanson.

Benny Andrews, Elizabeth Catlett, Sam Gilliam, Richard Hunt, Jacob Lawrence, P.H. Polk, Hale Woodruff, and James Van Der Zee are among the scores of important regional, national, and international artists represented in the collection.
