Our Design Process

We will come and meet you on site, at this stage we want to get a feel for the location of your home and garden and how it sits within the landscape, discuss your ideas and your budget and generally find out how you would like your garden to work for you. Whatever your requirements we will work with your ideas in the design. Following the consultation we will provide a design quote for undertaking the survey and design phase.

Upon acceptance of the design quote we will undertake a site survey if needed, which means visiting the site to take detailed measurements. This allows us to create an accurate base to draw up the new plans for your garden.

We will present you with colour drawings of the concept for your garden. The concept drawings will include a plan view scale detailed CAD drawing as well as a photographic mood board that shows a montage of photos, including potential materials or features that could be integrated within the design. We are then available to answer any questions or queries about the concept, discuss any changes required, and ensure everyone is in agreement before drawing up the final masterplan.

The masterplan stage provides you with the final plan view scale drawing of your garden design accompanied by mood boards. We will provide a comprehensive quotation for our experienced landscape teams to undertake the build of your new garden. Upon accepting the quote for the build our landscape team will follow our technical drawings to develop your garden. During this stage we will project manage to ensure the garden is built to the correct specification.

We will also provide a quote for the soft landscaping (planting) of your garden, which is undertaken by our in-

The outdoor space of a cottage in Windermere was transformed by Lakeland Gardens to meet a variety of needs

THE BRIEF

The owners of this pretty cottage in Windermere approached Lakeland Gardens wanting to update their garden in order to make it more usable for their growing family.

The original garden space consisted of a large sloping lawn with a small shed in the lower corner. There was a limestone path near the house and very little space to accommodate the outdoor dining furniture. Planting largely consisted of shrubs surrounding the edges of the lawn.

The client’s requests were to have a family-sized dining patio near the house, along with a lawn for the children to play and a home office with an evening seating area. They were keen on a clean, modern and contemporary design with easy to maintain planting.

After some initial discussions, it had become clear that a full rebuild of the garden would be necessary. Whilst this may sound quite extreme, it often works out more cost effective than trying to modify the current layout and will result in a much more desirable outcome.

After some initial discussions, it had become clear that a full rebuild of the garden would be necessary. Whilst this may sound quite extreme, it often works out more cost-effective than trying to modify the current layout and will result in a much more desirable outcome. The sloping garden needed to be terraced. We managed to get the garden to work over two levels, the top level being for daytime dining and a lawn area, and the lower level being the home office and evening entertaining area. We incorporated a mid-level raised bed to soften the hard landscaping and to give the lower level a degree of privacy.

We decided upon a burnt larch cladding for the home office and used the same material for the arbor walkway in the upper part of the garden. Not only is burnt larch visually striking, it also offers superior waterproof qualities and higher resistance to fire and rot. It also has the benefit of much lower maintenance as there is no need to recoat every year as with varnishes and paints.

Corten steel planters were used to add additional planting around the garden room and work in harmony with the slate and burnt larch used throughout the design. Raising the bed surrounding the tree on the upper patio and cladding it with corten steel not only smartens the area, but also creates a feature of the tree and allows for the planting of bulbs that will bloom in the spring and summer.

The Outcome

The garden now feels like an extension of the home, an outdoor room if you will. The slate paving on the enlarged upper dining patio and lawn edging echoes the materials used in the house construction.

The home office is surrounded by composite decking and soft contemporary planting. The area is now private and secluded and an ideal space for entertaining friends. Planting throughout the garden is soft and subtle, using a muted palette of pale greens and mixing natural and structural plants to create a sophisticated feel. Variegated plants and a variety of leaf structures add to the textured feeling of the planting scheme. Pale green hydrangea ‘Annabel’ juxtaposed; neatly trimmed box balls planted alongside star-like choisya and pennisetum ‘Harlem’ soften the planting and make the arbor pathway appear to be floating. Cornus contraversa variegata brightens up a shady corner, and late flowering dogwood creates a delicate wall for increased privacy at the bottom of the garden. The garden is brought alive at night with the use of hidden lighting that casts shadows and adds a warmth and a glow to the detailed finishes in the space.

Our work has helped clients win overtwenty In Bloom Awards and some have evenbecome members of the national Open Garden scheme.

Within our team of horticulturists, gardeners, landscapers, and tree surgeons we have vast knowledge on what works and more importantly, what doesn’t in our climate and always consider the environmental impact and long-term goals of our work. From rediscovering lost heritage and original design features to restoring wildflower meadows or even encouraging flowering from plants put in many years ago, Lakeland Gardens can complete all aspects of garden restoration.

How our Garden Restoration service works

Initially, we will gain an understanding of the garden through on-site visits and talking through your expectations with you. We then plan what features are to be retained, restored, removed, or replaced. Professional drawings which show both planting and landscaping designs are created and agreed before we implement an efficient, effective, and achievable restoration plan for the garden or landscape in a set timeline.

On completion we can put together a schedule of regular garden maintenance visits to keep the garden looking its best all year.

OUR NURSERY

We design differently, we plant differently, we stock our nursery differently

Lakeland Gardens are proud to be breathing new life into Windermere’s Garden Centre. The centrally located site was originally owned by Thomas Mawson the famous Victorian garden designer but had been closed for twenty-five years until Lakeland Gardens acquired the lease in 2020. The 4,500 square metre space is once more home to specialist and architectural plants.

Lakeland Gardens Nursery specialises in plants, trees, sculptures and pots that simply can’t be found in your average garden centre. Sourced directly from the best growers in Europe and the UK by our horticultural and design experts, all plants are specially selected to thrive in the Lake District climate. Everything chosen by us will give gardens the unmistakable wow factor; from mature trees and shrubs, towering grasses, topiary and more exotic varieties such as palms. All are available in the heart of Windermere where visitors to Lakeland Gardens Nursery can expect not only the best quality plants but the insightand expertise of our knowledgeable team too.
