MORI-J: DAncER & ARtISt World famous Denmark based “robot dancer” Mori-J (Mori Koichiro) is a master of performance and illusion-style dance. I
am going to write some words I never thought I’d write: Of all the places I’ve ever left, Fukuoka is by far the most recent. After 16 years in Fukuoka, 19 in Japan, and 20 in Asia, I decided to call it quits and move back to what some might call my home country. I certainly wasn’t the first to gaijin to leave and I know I won’t be the last, but after a certain number of years here one becomes known as a “lifer”. I crossed that barrier long ago, yet I left anyway. Many were shocked I decided to leave – including myself. What made me leave? There are days I don’t know how to answer that, because it is so easy to remember why I stayed: I never lost the sheer joy of participating in another culture. Japan is so different from any other place I have ever known, and yet despite the difference it is surprisingly easy to live here. I have friends who stayed here one or
two or three years, and they promptly departed after having ticked the mental box “overseas experience”. Many years later they still regretted having left before tiring of living in Japan. I never did that; realizing early on what a precious opportunity I had, I swore I’d never leave until I had drunk my fill of being here. I am happy to say that, for me, the glass of wonder in Japan is still topped to the brim. But I could never escape the feeling that closing time would nevertheless soon be upon me. と、心の奥底から聞こえてくる声を無視でき ずに帰国するけど、後になって、もう少し長 くいれば良かった、なんて後悔してる。とも あれ、今まで僕にはそんな声すら聞こえな かったんだ。今までは ... しかし、日本との縁を感じながらも、ついに は去るべき時が自分にも迫っている感覚から 逃げ切ることができなかった。英語教師として 教壇に立ちながら、年々生徒数が減少し多くの 学校が閉校を余儀なくされる現実を目の当た

Japan’s future. Every year the number of students decreases compared to the year before. The result is that I have seen several schools close, including not a few that I used to work for. Even the ones I worked for that survived seemed pressed. Each year’s group of students usually seemed a tad less capable than the previous year’s, because the pool of students that each school was drawing from was constantly growing smaller. With precious little job security and limited employment opportunities beyond my chosen profession, I worried a little more each year. Would declining enrollments push me out of the job market against my will? I also had my children to think about. The rationale for my employment was that English was a critical need, so much so that Japan employed large numbers of native speakers. If English were truly so crucial, how could I deny my own children a chance to live full-time in an English-speaking environment? I know English teachers in Japan whose children cannot speak English well. I did not want my children to fall into the same trap.
Though my daughter spoke reasonably well, her reading ability was low. After one year in U.S. fifth grade, however, she quickly progressed from a reading level of nearly zero all the way to National Honor Society. And I watch her, and my two sons, with satisfaction, knowing they are making their own adventures. Don’t think for a moment that I don’t miss Japan. I have an absolute laundry list of things I miss and can’t be replicated where I live: tops among them would be hot springs, the mountains of Kyushu, and that thrill of stumbling across a unique gem of a restaurant or inn tucked into a little valley. Most of all, I miss the friends I made during my time in Japan. Finding a small number of like-minded friends who could help me out when I didn’t know what to do, or commiserate with me when things were going badly, was one of the greatest joys of living in Japan. Life abroad is an intense experience; when you share that experience with your best friends, you’ve got friends forever. But now in my middle age (and yes, I have to face that too!) I have decided that I want another adventure. This one is to reintroduce
myself to a country and a people I don’t fully understand after so long away. I want to test myself in a new way, to see if I can still reach deep inside and find the wherewithal to succeed in an entirely new place. With the world economy being what it is, it’s a heckuva time to be testing this theory, but the same restlessness that drove me to Japan is pushing me in an entirely new direction. And I am powerless to resist it. I will always be back to visit whenever I can, and everyone and everything from my time in Japan lives in my heart still. With fond remembrance I raise my glass to you – and with the time difference, you’d better start early. Kanpai!

メリカの学校に転入させ、今ではネイティブと 同等レベルに追いついた。子供たちが各々の力 でたくましく、新しい環境に順応していく姿 を誇らしく見守る父としての自分がいる。 日本が恋しくないかって？もちろん恋しい さ！恋しいものを挙げていったらキリがない し、そもそもとって代わるものもがないから ね。例えば、温泉や九州の山々。渓谷にひっ そりとたたずむ宿屋や食事処。そして何より も日本にいる友だち。心を許せる友だちと出 会い、過ごした時間は何にも勝る。困った時 には寄り添い、励ましてくれた仲間たちのお かげで、最高の時間を過ごすことが出来た。 海外での張りつめた生活の中で同じ思いを分 かち合える友人に恵まれる、それはつまり、
人生における親友を得ることだ。 しかし中年となり（これも無視出来ない現 実）、次への挑戦に気持ちが固まってしまっ たのだ。今回は母国への帰郷。長く離れてい たため慣れないことばかりだし、感覚もずれ てる気がする。それでも新たな場所でどこま で自分の根を張ることができるか試してみた いんだ。自分なりの方法でね。世界中が不況 に喘ぐ中、こんな呑気なこと言ってられない のかもしれないが、僕を日本へと突き動かし たのと同じ、あの「ソワソワした感じ」には 抵抗できない。日本には帰りたいときにいつ でも帰れる。日本でのすべてはいつでも僕の 心にある。まだ朝早いけど、時差があるから はじめるよ。大好きな日本へ、カンパイ！

One for those who are dedicated to the printed word - this event includes a used book market along Keyaki-dori (Nov. 3), staff chosen paperback awards and talks by prize winning Japanese authors Mitsuyo Kakuta and Shinya Tanaka. Check the website for times and locations.
A celebration of Yanagawa-born tanka poet and children’s songwriter, Hakushu Kitahara, who passed away on Nov. 2, 1942. Around 80 boats decorated with lanterns will float down the Yanagawa river at night, and the sky will be illuminated with Autumn fireworks.
This Autumn festival has been held since the late 1500s, and this year around 500,000 people are expected to attend over three days. Lions, dragons and other symbols adorn 14 festival floats. Don’t miss the portable shrine parade on Nov. 3 leaving from Karatsu Shrine.

本や活字との関わりを深めること ができるイベント。第７回目を迎 える今年も「一箱古本市 in けや き通り」（11/3）を中心に、恒例 の書店企画「福岡の書店員が選ん だ激オシ文庫フェア」や、直木 賞作家、角田光代さんと本年の 芥川賞受賞作家、田中慎弥さん による対談形式のトークショー など内容は盛りだくさんだ。各 日のイベントやスケジュール は ホ ー ム ペ ー ジ で 確 認 し よ う。
1942 年 11 月 2 日が命日の詩人・ 童謡作家・歌人北原白秋を偲び、 故郷である柳川で行われる幻想的 な祭り。60 回目を数える今年も、 ほおずき提灯やあんどんで飾られ た 80 艘ほどのどんこ舟が約 1,000 人を乗せ、川岸で演奏される白秋 の童謡や歌曲の響きのなか夜の柳 川をパレードする。秋の夜空を鮮 やかに彩る花火も見逃せない。
16 世紀の終わりに始まったとさ れる唐津神社の秋祭り。三日間で 約 50 万人が訪れる大祭は日本三 大くんちの一つだ。獅子や龍など をかたどった 14 台の曳山はどれ も華やかで勇ましい。見どころは ３日の御旅所神幸（おたびしょし んこう）。唐津神社を９時半に出 発し、西の浜明神台まで巡行した 14 台の巨大な曳山が勢いよく砂 地へ曳き込まれ、一堂に会する曳 き込みは見逃せない。

◊ Oyster Season is coming
◊ Park and Ride trial Park and Ride is a means for using the transportation system in which people drive and park at the nearest train station or bus stop and transfer to public transportation. The objective is to reduce traffic congestion and CO2 emissions. It is now being conducted as a trial for people who drive to work in the Tenjin and Hakata areas. They will drive and park at the parking lot at the Aeon Kashiihama Mall, and take an urban expressway bus from a nearby stop to work. Their only requirement is to purchase a book of coupons to use the parking lot, which costs ¥5,000 a month. Other than that, the system is free. The trial will be conducted from Nov.1 this year to Apr. 30 next year. The service is available from 06:00~23:00. Interested people should apply at the information
The Miyaura district on the west side of Hakata Bay, known for many years as Karatomari, is the only oyster-producing area in the city. One of the famous fall attractions of Fukuoka is the oyster huts where people can enjoy eating the large Ebisu oysters roasted over charcoal. ◊ name the new Gate in Hakata A new gate to welcome tourists to the city and serve as a new symbol for Hakata is being built at 1 Hakataekimae, in front of Jotenji Temple, and is slated to be finished in 2013. It is designed in the image of the Hakata of the Middle Ages, when the city flourished as a center for trade. The design was modeled after a gate that stood during the Edo period. It is to be a wooden structure covered in tile and about eight meters high. A solicitation for the new gate name will be held from Nov. 1~22. Include all the required information and send your entry by postcard, fax, or e-mail.
