Tafia: Roots of Rum in the Caribbean

Question of the month
Did you know that before rum became a global icon, it was known as Tafia in the Caribbean?
This term, of African origin and popularized in the Caribbean islands during colonization, referred to the unaged, raw, and potent distilled cane liquor consumed by enslaved people, plantation workers, and sailors.
• On ships, it was the fuel for pirates and sailors who crossed the Atlantic.
• On plantations, it was shared as an everyday drink, a symbol of resistance and cultural identity.
• In rituals and celebrations, it played a central role in the social life of Afro-descendant and Creole communities.

Over time, tafia evolved, was refined through aging processes, and gave rise to rum as we know it today: sophisticated, versatile, and recognized worldwide.

At Providencia Bulk Rum, we are inspired by that story: In the authenticity of tafia and its role as the “rustic cousin” of rum. Today, that same spirit drives us to:
• Raise rum production to international standards.
• Conquer global markets with versatile, high-quality profiles.
• Commit to sustainability and ethics at every stage of the process.
What was once a drink rooted in endurance and tradition is now becoming a driving force of innovation and global expansion.

This month, we spoke with Simón Pedro Pereira García, our Rum Master, who reminded us that “consistency is not an accident—it is a promise.”
Thanks to his vision, we have built a portfolio of rums that meets the expectations of demanding markets while preserving its unmistakable Colombian essence.

Angie Riascos Sustainability Director
This is how we experience sustainability in Providencia.
The vision of Angie Riascos, Sustainability Director of Providencia
• 100% of our energy comes from renewable sources
• We reduced water consumption in our processes by 30%
• We continue working with sugarcane communities to strengthen sustainable agricultural practices
At Providencia, we believe that sustainability is neither a trend nor a single objective—it is our way of operating. It is the language through which we relate to the earth, to people, and to the future.
It is the framework through which we make decisions, build alliances, and transform ourselves every day to become a more regenerative, more human, and more conscious agribusiness.
Through our Sustainability Strategy, we aim to create shared value in everything we do. And we do so through concrete actions—through data that tells stories, and stories that inspire us to keep planting the future.
We preserve life from the territory
At Providencia, we work every day to conserve biodiversity. Our Ecological Park—524 hectares of strategic ecosystems—is a natural refuge where multiple species find food, shelter, and the conditions they need to thrive. This protected environment is not an annex; it is an integral part of our operation and reflects how we embed conservation into our production decisions.
We take care of water as a common good.
We protect more than 30 springs and promote e cient water management through high-precision irrigation systems.
We know that every drop counts. That’s why we work hand in hand with communities, authorities, and organizations to ensure that water continues to flow clean and abundant for everyone.

turn waste into opportunities
We are driven by a conviction: everything can be transformed. That’s why we recycle 99.5% of the waste generated in our operations and apply the principles of a circular economy throughout the entire production cycle.
The sugarcane teaches us that every part has a purpose, and that natural wisdom guides our approach to e ciency and regeneration.
We educate to leave installed capacity
Education is a powerful engine of transformation. At Colegio Providencia, we positively impact the lives of more than 4,000 people, including collaborators, children, and community members. It is there that we nurture values, environmental awareness, and opportunities for a better future.
Through our School of Leaders for a Sustainable Valley, we have also trained 150 people in community leadership, social project design, citizen participation, and resource management. Each graduate represents a genuine possibility for transformation—one that begins within the community
B Certification: Sustainability with Purpose
In 2021, we became the world’s first sugar mill to be certified as a B Corp. This recognition commits us to continue balancing economic value with positive social and environmental impact. For us, it’s more than a certification—it is a responsibility, a promise to stay accountable to the planet and to future generations.

Our 2024 Sustainability Report doesn’t just collect numbers—it collects stories.
Stories of women leading environmental initiatives, of young people finding new opportunities through education, and of communities building solutions rooted in their own realities.

At Providencia, we understand that growth is not only about producing more. It is about growing with purpose, with a long-term vision, and with the commitment to uplift everyone who walks this path with us.
We plant the future, and we do it together. Because we believe in an agro-industry that not only produces, but also protects. One that doesn’t just transform sugarcane, but transforms lives.
At Providencia, we understand that growth isn’t just about producing more.
