La verdadera historia de los Reyes Magos FMHOY - Fuerteventura Como todos los años, el 6 de enero es un día mágico para millones de niños que esperan la visita de los Reyes Magos: Melchor, Gaspar y Baltasar, que los colmarán de juguetes si se han portado bien. Pero, ¿quiénes eran realmente sus majestades? Ahora es un buen momento para conocer su verdadera historia y el origen del mito de que eran reyes y magos. Los Reyes en la Biblia Según la tradición los Reyes Magos eran tres, uno era europeo, el otro asiático y el tercero africano. Melchor, Gaspar y Baltasar viajaban montados en camello y le dieron al niño Jesús tres regalos: oro, incienso y mirra. Estos tres presentes aludían a la triple naturaleza del pequeño como rey, como dios y como hombre. Aunque, curiosamente, poco o casi nada de todo esto se menciona en la Biblia. Lo único que aparece referente a ellos se encuentra en el Evangelio según San Mateo en el capítulo segundo: “Cuando Jesús nació en Belén de Judea en días del rey Herodes, vinieron del oriente a Jerusalén unos magos diciendo: ¿Dónde está el Rey de los Judíos que ha nacido? Porque su estrella hemos visto en el Oriente y venimos a adorarle” (Mt 2:2). Y un poco más adelante, en el versículo 11 se mencionan los tres regalos: oro, incienso y mirra. Los tres personajes, advertidos de que no deberían ver más al rey Herodes, tomaron otro camino para regresar a la tierra y es así como desaparecen del recuento bíblico. ¿Por qué se les llama Reyes Magos? La palabra “mago” en un contexto evangélico designa específicamente a la casta sacerdotal meda o persa. Su fuente de conocimiento era la astronomía y los miembros tenían por costumbre salir de los linajes aristocráticos. Es por eso, por sus notables conocimientos y
su capacidad de pronosticar ciertos eventos que se les llama magos, como alguien con poderes sobrenaturales y con la capacidad de hacer magia. Por otra parte, el reconocerlos como reyes tampoco venía recogido en la Biblia. Sin embargo, existe una afirmación del siglo III cuando Tertuliano, padre de la Iglesia, determinó su estatus de reyes, ya que en aquellos tiempos se les representaba con ropajes lujosos, joyas y riquezas que solo los monarcas podían tener. ¿Cuál es el verdadero viaje de los Reyes? Una antigua ruta caravanera bordeaba el desierto de Arabia y Siria, al sur de Éufrates, para descender a Jordania. En ese camino es en el que viajaban Gaspar y Baltasar. Por su parte, Melchor viajaba en solitario cruzando Babilonia en busca de sus compañeros. Cuando se encontraron, los tres reyes compartieron camino durante meses para llegar a Judea. Cruzaron un arroyo que desembocaba en el Mar Muerto y se detuvieron en Metan. A continuación, bordearon el Mar Muerto y enfilaron hacia el norte tras atravesar el río Jordán. Llegaron a Jerusalén y se entrevistaron con Herodes, un rey puesto por los romanos. Este dijo no saber nada y, para colmo, la estrella que había guiado a los Reyes dejó de verse. Desolados, los tres entendieron que no tenían nada que hacer allí y acudieron a Belén, a cinco kilómetros al sur. Llegaron y buscaron la gruta en la que había nacido Dios… ¡y dieron con ella como su estrella les había dicho! Una historia con final feliz como el que viven millones de niños en casa la noche del 5 de enero a la espera de que los Reyes Magos no pasen de largo y dejen muchos regalos.

The true story of the Three Kings
FMHOY - Fuerteventura As in every year, the 6th January is a magical day for millions of children who eagerly await the visit of the Three Kings: Melchior, Caspar and Balthazar who will bring them toys if they were nice. But, who were really the Three Kings? It is now the perfect time to find out the true story and the origin of the myth of who they were. The Kings in the Bible According to the tradition, there were three of them, one was European, the other Asian and the third was African. Melchior, Caspar and Balthazar travelled on camelback and gave the baby Jesus three gifts: gold, incense and myrrh. Those three gifts represented the triple nature of the newborn as king, God and man. Although, curiously, very little or almost nothing of any of this is mentioned in the bible. There is only a reference to them in the Gospel of Matthew in the
second chapter: “When Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea in the time of King Herod, the Wise Men came from the East to Jerusalem and asked: Where is the child who has been born king of the Jews? For we observed his star at its rising, and have come to pay him homage” (Mt 2:2). And a little further, in verse 11, they mention the three gifts: gold, incense and myrrh. The three characters were told that they wouldn’t be able to see King Herod any more and they went on another course to go back home and this is how they leave the biblical tale. Why are they called the Three Kings or Wise Men The word “wise man” in an evangelical context refers specifically tothe Median or Persian priestly caste. Their source of knowledge was astronomy and members used to come from the aristocracy. This is the reason why, because of their considerable knowledge and ability to predict some events, they were called wise men, like someone with supernatural powers and the capacity to produce magic. On the other hand, they were not described as wise men or kings in the bible either. However, at the III century Tertullian, a priest, described them as kings because, at the time, they were represented wearing luxurious clothes, jewels and had wealth that only the monarchy could possess. What was the true journey of the Three Kings? An old caravan route used to skirt the desert of Arabia and Syria, at the south of Euphrates, on the way down to Jordan. This is the journey that Caspar and Balthazar made. On the other hand, Melchior came alone by going across Babylon, searching for his companions. When they met, the Three Kings shared their journey for a few months before arriving in Judea. They went across a stream that ran into the Dead Sea and they stopped in Metan. Then, they went along the Dead Sea and went north after crossing the River Jordan. They arrived in Jerusalem and met with King Herod, who had been put in place by the Romans. He said that he knew nothing and unbelievably, the star that had guided the Kings stopped being visible. Devastated, the Three Kings understood that they had nothing more to do there and went to Bethlehem, five kilometres further south. They searched for the cave where God was born...and they found it just as the star had said to them! This is a story with a happy ending such as the one that millions of children live at home every 5th of January waiting for the Three Kings to stop by and leave them many presents.
