Alliance for the Arts Gets NEA Grant

The National Endowment for the Arts Chairman has approved an Art Works grant of $50,000 to the Alliance for the Arts for a public art project as part of the redevelopment of 2.2 acres along McGregor Blvd. slated to begin later this year.

“It is energizing to see the impact that the arts are making throughout the United States. The Alliance for the Arts has engaged Michael Singer Studio to lead a collaborative design team to reimagine the western edge of its 10-acre campus as part of a multi-phase campus expansion. The focal point of this project is the Caloosahatchee Water Wall designed by Michael Singer Studios. In addition to this key component, a new sidewalk and lighting is being installed.

NEWS &PREVIEWS

COTT TUROW is the author of ten best-selling novels set in fictional Kindle County, including Presumed Innocent, Burden of Proof , and Reversible Errors , which were adapted to film. He also wrote two non-fiction books, including the best-selling One L, about his experiences as a law student. His books have been translated into more than 40 languages and sold more than 30 million copies worldwide. His newest best-selling novel, Testimony has been acclaimed a masterful international legal thriller. He is a frequent contributor to publications such as The New York Times, The Washington Post, Vanity Fair, The New Yorker, and The Atlantic.

Tu row served as Assistant U.S. Attorney in Chicago, where he prosecuted several high-profile corruption cases. He was a member of the U.S. Senate Nominations Commission for the Northern District of Illinois, which recommends federal judicial appointments.

I was able to ask Mr. Turow a few questions about his work as a writer and his thoughts as a lawyer.

Your new book, Testimony deals with war crimes in Europe, a long way from Illinois’ Kindle County. Why did you feel the need to create the fictional world of Kindle County in the first place? And why did you feel that you needed to leave Kindle County now and focus on an international situation?

SCOTT TUROW:I got the idea for Testimony when I made a trip to Holland during 2000 for a book tour. I was at a small reception where many of the guests were American lawyers who were working in The Hague and I was in a circle of about five lawyers who told me I had to write a book about The Hague and the International Criminal Court.

As for Kindle County, it came about as an accident. Because I was working as a federal prosecutor, a job that requires high confidentiality, I was reluctant to set Presumed Innocent in Chicago, so there was no confusion between my day job and the world I’d imagined. When I followed with

the Burden of Proof — about Rusty’s lawyer, Sandy Stern — I was firmly lodged in Kindle County.

Testimony is part thriller, part history lesson and part morality tale, dealing with both systematic and personal cruelty and heroism. Why was it important to you to tell this story at this time?

The treatment of the Romas intrigued me. They are emblematic of the struggle of all minority issues of today, and of refugees. I saw currency in the theme of how the Romas are treated, as are refugees. They have been treated horribly. They come with their own values and culture and those are often incompatible to those who are trying to help them. The complexity was very attractive to me.

What is the secret to a good thriller ?

Not to be a wise-guy, but the secret is secrets. There has to be something the reader doesn’t know and can’t see, but it must be a development the reader could fairly anticipate. And of course, a hero in actual peril will make the book thrilling in another respect.

Testimony has been reviewed as a 'fun' read. You must have mixed feelings to have written a book about war crimes that people think of as fun?

I have always accepted the fact that my novels can and are read at different levels by different readers. It was obviously a challenge to make a book about war crimes ‘fun,’ but I’m glad that some readers take the book only as an intricate puzzle. For others, of course, it’s a story about how the law deals with the greatest evil, and the tale of how that exploration leads one middleaged guy to become more deeply in touch with himself and his own family’s ghosts.

What is your creative process as far as historical research, character and plot development, and the actual physical writing? Do you have a schedule or routine? How much research do you do?

I do as much research as the book seems to require. In the case of Testimony, it was a great deal, because I needed to learn a lot about the International Criminal Court, The Hague, the Bosnian War and Bosnia, and about

the Roma people. The research always stimulates the creative process though. The more you learn, the more you can see the opportunities for intrigue.

You've had a few books adapted to film. Writing is a solitary creative process and filmmaking is the process of a collective. How was the experience of having your books adapted to film?

It’s a strange process. On the set for Reversible Errors , which was a miniseries on CBS, I looked around the set and realized that hundreds of people were working to make real something that had lived for years in the privacy of my mind. On the other hand, there are always differences between my vision and the filmmakers. Overall, my experiences have been good.

In 1990 you were featured on the cover of Time magazine, which called you 'The Bard of Litigation.' Do you find that insulting or wear it as a badge of honor?

Well, to be precise, Time called me ‘The Bard of the Litigious Age,’ and to the extent that it recognized my role in writing stories about America’s growing preoccupation and involvement with the law, which were important to Americans, I was pleased to agree. I’ve never thought that a writer can ask for a wide readership — and almost all writers want to be broadly read — and then try to establish exacting terms. For me, it is truly a dream come true to be read on the one hand, and to be praised by critics on the other. I’ve been lucky enough to have, for the most part, the best of both worlds.

You received the Robert F. Kennedy Center for Justice & Human Rights book award for your non-fiction book, Ultimate Punishment because it "most faithfully and forcefully reflects Robert Kennedy's purposes — his concern for the poor and the powerless, his struggle for honest and even-handed justice, his conviction that a decent society must assure all young people a fair chance, and his faith that a free democracy can act to remedy disparities of power and opportunity." Your novels explore the American legal system, with all it problems and inequalities. How do you feel about the current attempts (or lack of movement) in Washington to deal with prison reforms? How do you feel about the death penalty and 'for-profit' prisons?

I think the notion of privatizing basic governmental functions, especially ones like prisons that come with clear constitutional requirements, is misplaced. It would be like our elected representatives hiring someone to deal with constituents. Due Process cannot be farmed out. It’s part of what makes government inefficient and unable to compete with private enterprises. And that’s also how it’s supposed to be. As a lawyer and former prosecutor, what is your take on the current tussle between the President and the FBI and special investigator Mueller, and Trump's repeated attacks on the judiciary?

I expect Robert Mueller to do his job without fear or favor. We are talking about a Republican who was appointed to head the FBI by Republicans, but whose professionalism led him to be reappointed by President Obama. The attacks on him by Mr. Trump are, in a word, a disgrace. They are also baseless. You have to be desperate to go this route, because it will come back to bite you in the end. Just ask Joe McCarthy how well it worked out for him, when he decided to attack the United States Army.

In the past, you've been critical of 'eBooks' (which is sort of ironic considering that your novels are set in ‘Kindle’ County). What are your objections or concerns?

I have never been critical of eBooks, which in fact form the bulk of my own reading, because I travel so much. My objections are to the way Amazon popularized the eBook, through deliberate predatory pricing in which they sold eBooks at a loss for many years. The effect of that was to drive the market away from physical books, to put bookstores out of business and to prevent other companies from entering the eBook market in competition with Amazon. My concerns were — and are — with Amazon, not eBooks in themselves.

In the age of Twitter & Facebook, what do you think is the future of, and importance of literacy?

Literacy remains what I call the Mandarin skill — that is, reading and writing well are the principal skills of the people who run this society.

What is your advice to aspiring writers — both for their craft and the publishing business?

Books will always be with us, because text is a remarkably efficient means of delivering information, and one that is uniquely involving to the audience. As for writing, there is one way to become a writer: write. Don’t talk about it, do it. •

JOYFUL YOGA &SPA is the brainchild of Tess Chiodo, who along with her daughters, Jacqueline and Emily, offer a range of yoga and meditation classes and workshops as well as ayerveda and spa services.

I asked Tess about her personal practice of yoga, mediation and ayurveda, and about her studio and spa

How were you first introduced to yoga?

TESS CHIODO: The Beatles influenced my desire to learn yoga in the late 60s. The world could see a shift — at least my little world in Southern California —in not only their musicality but also in their identity and search for meaning. Peace, love and flower power.

When and why did you start practicing yoga seriously?

In the beginning it was more ‘performance art.’ I was a teenager in an all-girls Catholic School and I liked being different. Once I began a regular practice it was a natural consequence to cultivate more awareness and understand that the physical poses were simply the entree to the real practice, which is meditation.

What is the most important thing to know about practicing yoga?

That there is no finish line. To understand that the physical practice is a gateway to ease, comfort and stability as one begins, that will eventually lead one to all that they desire. That it is a process of creating awareness as you move the bodymind (because they can not be separated), into the poses gently, without force or strain. That conditioning of the physical body can and will be achieved without force. That one must learn to be as patient and kind with their own body's abilities and limitations as they would be with their most beloveds.

How has practicing yoga impacted your life — physically, mentally, spiritually, and emotionally ?

That is the miracle of yoga! This amazing map that was passed down from the ancient seers, the Vedic sages, impacts every aspect of ones life. That is the brilliance of the ‘8 Limbs of yoga’. There are no levels in this science and philosophy. Yoga can begin with any of the branches, whether its the physicality of Asana, the selfless service of Karma Yoga, the devotion of chanting and song in Bhakti Yoga, the study of the Philosophy in Jyana Yoga, the study of the Energy body of the Chakra system, Pranayama (the breathing exercises), the study of Ayurveda the oldest medical model and so much more.

What particular school of yoga do you practice and why ?

Our goal is to provide aspects of the full philosophy and science to our students. This is called Raja Yoga, or The Royal Path. All of the physical poses, or Asana have their roots in Hatha Yoga.

Obviously, Yoga has evolved, like everything else, over this past 5000-plus years. Ideally, we try not to veer too far off the main precepts of the practice, but are open to current hybrids as long as the main principles are intact, such as non-violence, Ahimsa. Are you harming your body through physical movement or even through your own internal dialogue? We sometimes don't know the answer to this question as we have so successfully disconnected the body and mind. Thus Yoga's goal: connecting the body, mind and consciousness. Bringing them together in union with the breath and then performing action. In this way, any activity can become Yoga. This is called mindfulness. Simply put, if you are practicing the poses mindfully this makes it a moving meditation.

What styles of yoga are offered at Joyful Yoga ?

We offer some form of each popular style from Yin and Restorative Yoga to Heated Vinyasa, from Gentle and Chair to Buti Yoga. If we get requests we try to accommodate our students’ desires. The schedule is constantly evolving.

How has meditating impacted your life ?

I got my first TM (Transcendental Meditation) Mantra in 1976 in the thick of tough times. I was young, married, a mother, owned a business and had a husband who was an alcoholic and meth addict. Had I not sought out meditation I am sure my life would have taken a completely different trajectory.

At some point in the practice of Yoga, any aspect of it, one starts to create a relationship with their own consciousness (call this soul if you are so inclined). Soon realizing that they are in fact a spiritual being having a human experience instead of the opposite, that they can control their own mind, and that the most direct path to any desire is to be still and silent for any amount of time. You are a human being, not a human doing! This is meditation. Any form of meditation one will actually practice daily is the best for them. I have dabbled in them all and have profoundly benefited both physically and psychologically in untold ways.

In 2011, I became a certified PSM (Primordial

We offer this course once each month and also a free Introduction to Meditation Class on the first Friday of each month, 4-5pm.

Explain what ayurveda is ?

Ayurveda (Knowledge of Life) is the oldest health model and the sister science of Yoga. It provides an holistic (body and mind) model of health that focuses on creating balance through the five senses. All medicine has its roots in Ayurveda. It teaches you that there is no ‘onesize-fits-all’ in humans and that understanding one’s own body/mind constitution and how when one specifically aligns with the elements in nature it allows for self healing. It offers a map of simple techniques to discover who you really are and how to create balance. We offer Ayurveda 101 twice each year. It is a 5-hour workshop to provide one with a working knowledge of the science. This spring’s workshop will be March 25.

How has it impacted your life ?

Ayurveda is truly the missing piece to the practice of yoga, for most. It creates a deep understanding of who you are; physically, mentally and emotionally, and maybe even more importantly, understanding who all these others are with whom you are sharing this life.

What ayurvedic spa treatments are offered at Joyful Yoga & Spa?

In our Spa, it is not so much about our specific Ayurvedic treatments —and we do have those —it is more about our knowledge of our clients’ Ayurvedic constitution that allows us to understand exactly what that individual needs to create a deep state of healing. One doesn't need to know a single thing about Ayurveda when they book an appointment because our

therapists do. Our goal is to make your experience perfect for you. This includes the fragrance in the room, the style and volume of music, the temperature of the room, the lighting, the type of pure organic oils used on your skin type, the pressure of the touch the therapist uses in the therapy and the entire atmosphere during the service.

We offer only Eminence Skin Care products exclusively for our Aesthetician services as they are the purest available. We provide the latest in non-invasive facial rejuvenation and healing techniques including derma sound, derma planing, cupping, hydrother-

apy and LED light therapy. We offer myriad forms of body work, including Swedana steam therapy, Garshan (dry brush massage) and Reiki.

In addition, my daughter Jacqueline is a Certified Ayurvedic Practitioner offering consultations, counseling and recommendations for healing and balance.

When did you open Joyful Yoga & Spa?

My two daughters, Jacqueline and Emily, and I opened in Bonita Springs in 2007 after having a small studio in Fort Myers for two years.

How has Joyful Yoga grown over the years?

We knew that we wanted to offer an Ayurvedic Spa and also expand our space to offer more and varied styles and levels of classes, and also Joyful Yoga Academy, offering 200- and 500-Hour Teacher Certifications. Our beautiful space offers 7600 square feet of peace and tranquility.

This spring we are expanding to offer a Kidding Around Yoga™ program and Summer day camp.

What do you hope to achieve with and for your students and clients?

It is mine and my daughters desire to introduce this most ancient of sciences to those that have never thought of themselves as a ‘yoga person’ and to reintroduce those that have practiced before and stopped. To provide the tools and knowledge that will allow anyone, regardless of age, flexibility, balance, strength or health to experience the practice, creating more ease, stability, joy and peace in their lives. To understand that it is a practice done without force, strain or pain. That yoga truly meets you where you are, physically, mentally and emotionally. •

The buildings that comprise The Veranda were once owned by Peter Pulitzer, son of the famed publisher.

Fabulous at 40

THE CHARMINGVictorian-style homes housing The Veranda restaurant are practically hidden among the modern cityscape of downtown Fort Myers. Their story is a genuine piece of history, going back to a Union fort on the Caloosahatchee River named in 1850 for Colonel Abraham Myers, and a trading post pioneer, Captain Manuel Gonzales, who delivered mail and supplies there via riverboat. After Seminole Chief, Billy Bowlegs surrendered in 1858, the fort stood barely used until 1866, when Captain Gonzales returned with his family (including five-year-old, Manuel Jr.) to operate a trading post located on the site of the present Federal building. Around the turn of the century, the younger Manuel built two houses for himself and his mother at what is now Second Street and Broadway.

The houses were joined in the early 1970s by Peter Pulitzer, son of the famed publisher, for his fishing buddy, Fingers O’Bannon, who was the first to operate a restaurant and bar at the location. O’Bannon sold the property to Cloyde Pate, who also operated Cloyde’s Restaurant in Naples for many years. In 1978 restauranteur Paul Peden bought the buildings, and The Veranda was born.

The Veranda is celebrating its 40th annivesary as one of the city’s iconic fine dining institutions, a local favorite for lunch and dinner; where families gather for special occasions, couples enjoy romantic dinners, regulars stop by to meet old friends, and tourists discover one of the best restauarnts in Southwest Florida. Veranda owner, Paul Peden points to hard work, attention to detail and a consistent level of quality and service as key elements to its success.

“We still work hard every day to improve our food and service; we are never satisfied,” said Peden, who has operated nearly 30 restaurants in his career. “We are constantly evolving to meet the changing tastes of our patrons. From the front of the house to the back of house, everyone works very hard to make it a great experience for our guests every time they dine with us, and I think it shows. It takes a skilled, caring staff honed to the needs of our patrons to keep them coming back.”

General Manager and 18-year Veranda employee, Dennis Genge attests to this philosophy of longevity. An upstate New York state native and former teacher, Denny (as he prefers to be called) came to Southwest Florida for the weather and better opportunities. He finds that one of the highlights of his job is getting to know their guests and being able to make their dining experience special. It’s what he looks for in his staff as well.

“They have to enjoy what they’re doing. It’s very evident to the customer. Our servers should have a nice easy smile, be clean, neat, and knowledgeable of both the food and the wine.”

Longevity sure does reign at The Veranda. Denny continues, “Pete Turner, one of our servers, has been here 21 years. Fred Johnson, our pastry chef, has been here since at least 1988. Willie Peterson, our daytime server assistant, has been here 21 years. Sabrina Baran, the lead server during the day, has been here at least 30 years. Our youngest server, Sophie, has only been here two years, but loves working here. She hostesses at night.”

Marketing Director, Beth Watson has logged 29 years here herself, promoting both The Veranda and

Beth offers, “They both have input in both properties, but The Veranda is definitely Paul’s passion. He’s got input in the dining room, direct input in the menu and specials and things like that. He’s very hands-on. He loves being here and being involved in the restaurant. He always says “There is no finish line’”.

A standout element at The Veranda is the tableside preparation of various dishes, available only at dinnertime. Patrons enjoy watching skilled servers prepare fresh Caesar and spinach salads, Chateaubriand, cherries jubilee, flaming coffees, and bananas foster flambé. It’s a Veranda exclusive locally, and Beth gives the nod to Denny as the master, teaching servers himself how to do it.

Executive Chef Daniel Frier, here two years, has 25 years experience cooking in Atlanta area and Charlotte kitchens before coming to The Veranda. Learning the dishes was relatively easy for him, given his background, but he’s always looking for the right people to help him in the kitchen. “I look for attitude first. The right attitude, then you can teach around that,” Daniel says, “I strive for perfection.”

“The remodeling never stops,” says Peden. Forty years running, and a quick look around the place (following a fabulous lunch of the signature Veranda Beef & Bleu) indicates the care given the facilities, which best can be described as elegant Southern Victorian. The interior and exterior are meticulously maintained to preserve its authentic charm. The walls of the piano bar, located just inside the front door, are adorned with historical photos, and a hearth in the middle of the dining room adds to the warm atmosphere. Carpeting is regularly replaced; walls are repainted or re-wallpapered, drapes are redone, and the signature high-backed, padded dining chairs are regularly re-cushioned with new fabric.

“We started coming to The Veranda when we were first dating in 2005,” recall Jacquie and Doug Flenniken of Cape Coral. The couple were married a year later and still enjoy dinner and drinks at The Veranda often, as well as numerous New Year’s Eve celebrations.

Brad Miller and wife of 34 years, Crystal are Fort Myers natives and high school sweethearts. They would have dinner at The Veranda before dances, then held their engagement party here years later. Brad began working at The Veranda in 1979, leaving a year later to open an interior plant business. The Veranda remains as one of his clients.

“I think what’s always helped is that [The Veranda owner] Paul understands that his patrons appreciate the consistency the restaurant delivers through its systems and processes,” Miller says. “The Veranda’s recipes are a documented process and have continued to deliver the same consistent result again and again, even 40 years later.” A meal served by loyal, happy employees is always a plus. •

Melody Gardot Live in Europe (VERVE)

Fans of Melody Gardot know her as the consummate singer, one who seamlessly bridges the boundaries between pop and soul and jazz. Her highly acclaimed recordings exude contemporary class, a combination of sultry vocals, intelligent songs and first-rate musicianship. Her concerts are legendary.

Live in Europe presents Gardot with a small band (often only Gardot and stand-up bass, which is brilliant throughtout the album), making for an intimate performance that features her fantastic voice. Not that the instrumentation is unimportant. In fact, the band gets the opportunity to really stretch out and experiment, with most songs extended longer than recorded versions. A highlight of the album is March for Mingus, which is more than ten minutes longer here.

Other highlights include a rousing performance of ‘The Rain’ and her hits, ‘Our Love Is Easy,’ ‘Baby, I’m a Fool’ and ‘My One and Only Thrill,’ as well as her Latin-tinged take on ‘Over the Rainbow.’

Very much a unique artist, both in sound and style, Gardot will quickly win over fans of Adele, Alicia Keys, Diana Krall, Nora Jones, Cassandra Wilson, and Lady Gaga unfamiliar with her. Live in Europe, at more than 100 minutes long, is an excellent introduction to the range of her repertoire and the depths of her soul.

Bettye LaVette Things Have Changed (VERVE)

What happens when you match Betty LaVette’s powerhouse voice with Bob Dylan’s powerful lyrics? You get greatness. Covering songs that span Dylan’s career, from the early-1960s (‘It Ain’t Me Babe’ and ‘Mama, You’ve Been On My Mind’) to the 21st century (‘Ain’t Talkin’ and the title track), from the well-known (‘The Times They Are A-Changin’) to the obscure (‘Political World’ from Oh, Mercy, ‘Seeing the Real You At Last’ from Empire Burlesque and ‘Going, Going, Gone’ from Planet Waves), and even from Dylan’s ‘gospel’ years (‘Do Right To Me, Baby (Do Unto Others)’ from Slow Train Coming).

LaVette has been making hit records since the mid-1960s, but has enjoyed recent, newfound popularity and appreciation for her ballsy, bluesy style of funky soul music. Backed by a toptier studio band, and helped by special guests Keith Richards (‘Political World’), Trombone Shorty (‘What Was It You Wanted’), and Dylan’s one-time guitarist, Larry Campbell, Lavette blasts through the songs, singing

with the weathered soul of a veteran entertainer while allowing the listener to hear the genius of Dylan’s poetry clearly.

Some things have changed, but Betty LaVette’s ability to make raucous, rockin’ soul music thankfully has not. At age 72, she is better than ever.

Sunny War

With the Sun (HEN HOUSE)

After listening to Sunny War’s new album for just a minute you’ll be thinking, ‘Oh, this is different.’ After another minute or so you’ll be saying, ‘Oh, this is good.’

It might be her heartbreaking vocals, a delicate balance of vulnerability and toughness, or it might be her incredible and original guitar picking. Either way, you’ll be enjoying a bright new star on the Americana music scene. The album is a strong collection of bluesy folk music, usually just War playing acoustic guitar, sometimes sprinkled effectively with added strings (the gorgeous lament, ‘Gotta Live It’), fiddle (an oddly upbeat jig, ‘Til I’m Dead’), or tasteful electric guitar (‘Come Back’).

Somewhat in the tradition of Joan Armatrading, Tracy Chapman, and Rhiannon Giddens, Sunny War is a new and unique voice worth hearing —as a singer, songwriter and guitarist. The opening track asks the question, How would you know you had a heart / If it wasn’t broken? If this album doesn’t have at least one song that breaks yours, perhaps you don’t.

The Wailin’ Jennys

Fifteen (RED HOUSE)

The Wailin’ Jennys — Ruth Moody, Heather Masse, Nicky Mehta — are an acclaimed Canadian group that has twice received the Juno award (substantially the Canadian Grammy) for Best Roots & Traditional Album of the Year.
