“Before the age of television and digital media, printed graphic posters seduced viewers with eye-catching advertisements. These posters offered images of longed-for convenience, indulgent tastes, novel entertainments and solutions to troubles consumers never knew they had,” said Rangsook Yoon, Senior Curator at Sarasota Art Museum. “They were selling desires, serving as visual billboards of what living modernity would look like. These stunning posters highlight Art Deco as a style and movement that aligned with the modernity in the turbulent early 20th century.”
Among the works on view are posters by A.M. Cassandre, a French painter, commercial poster artist and typeface designer, and Roger de Valerio, whose work communicates the speed of the new industrial era.
In addition to 100 iconic posters, the exhibition includes a selection of sculptural pieces and vintage cocktail shakers and barware modeled after airplanes, zeppelin airships, as well as elegant furniture and lighting pieces.

oet Joyce Kilmer famously penned that only ‘God can make a tree,’ but Charles Clark and his team can do the job when asked.
Clark, who is Production Manager at Florida Repertory Theatre, oversees a staff of 30, including the costume shop manager, wardrobe supervisor, technical director, shop foreman, props master, master electrician, and others.
They create all kinds of worlds: a 1930s Paris hotel suite, a seedy South Philly nightclub circa 1959, a current-day lobby of a New York City apartment building.
“If it’s happening on the stage, I’m overseeing it,” Clark says.
His team created a life-sized tree for the set of ‘The Gin Game.’ In the ArtStage Studio Theatre, it towered over the rest of the set. The tree was so realistic, you’d think it pre-existed the venue and the theater had been built around it.
The play takes place on the back porch of a nursing home, but the script doesn’t specify a geographic location. Florida Rep set it in a heavily wooded area.
Clark’s beginning his fourth season with the theater.
“I’ve been in this industry forever, since I can remember,” he says. He’s worked on cruise ships, national tours, and for the Blue Man Group.
“I’ve poured my life into it. I’ve always enjoyed creating these different worlds for an audience to enjoy.”
Clark oversees a staff of 30, including the costume shop manager, wardrobe supervisor, technical director, shop foreman, props master, master electrician, and others.
“The job demands that “you be creative and still work within the laws of physics,” he says. “I like the mixture of both. I definitely have a creative side to me. And my father was an engineer in avionics, so I grew up with the analytical side.”
The 110-year old Historic Arcade Theater presents challenges other theaters don’t.
“We don’t have a fly system, so we can’t go up,” Clark says “And we don’t have wings, so we can go out. Everything we build we build onstage, and what you see is the room we have. If we want to add some technical elements or special effects, we’re limited in what we can do. Like flying people. We’d have to rip the ceiling out to fly people. We also can’t have sets that would slide off stag e, left and right.
“That’s why our sets look so good. Our sets have to have a different quality.”
Sometimes an audience is so impressed, they’ll applaud the set.
“It always feels good when that happens,” he says. “Every once in a while, on opening night, someone will thank me. They really like the Agatha Christie sets, the ornate sets.”
For Florida Rep’s production of ‘The Mountaintop,’ Clark and his production team created some special effects.
Staged in the studio theater, the play takes place in room 306 at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis during Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s last night on earth.
“We had a lot of tricks in that one,” Clark says. “We had to make flowers grow out of a carpet. It was a lot of fun and hard to pull off. That’s the thing about our job. When we go into the hardware store in the plumbing aisle, we’re not doing anything with water. We built a false floor, and then we had a plumbing system under
“There’s a method to the madness,” he says. If there’s any chaos, it’s organized chaos. Carpentry and building are done in one area, painting in another.
the floor and ran wires. And we had the roses attached to the wires so we could pull them up through the carpet. That effect was operated from the next room over.”
It made for a powerful, surreal moment for the audience, to see flowers suddenly growing out of a motel carpet.
“About two months before the show opens, we begin our design process,” Clark says. “We have a designer for every department: a scenic designer, props, a lighting designer, an audio designer and a costume designer. We get that team together with the director, and then we get the vision from the director. We read the script, and they talk about what he or she sees. It’s a round table discussion; they bat around ideas. We have some ensemble designers that we use.”
Clark discusses the show with Greg Longenhagen, the theater’s artistic producing director. They decide what the vibe should be for the show, he says, then call in the appropriate designer for that show.
“After that meeting, the scenic designer is the
first with a deadline,” Clark says. The designer presents it to Clark and Longenhagen, who review it with the designer.
“Sometimes it’s perfect and sometimes we have to make some changes,” Clark says. “Maybe it’s too far back from the action from the audience, or the doors aren’t in the exact space. We may need to tweak a wall. There may be some minor changes.
“Once we get the final design, I hand it over to the technical director. He orchestrates the builds from the paint shop and the carpentry team and the props.”
The design for the set depends upon what the script demands and the director’s motivation.
“For ‘Ben Butler,’ Greg wanted it very realistic. It was a farce, and he wanted it loud. With farces, you usually want it bright and loud,” Clark explains. Conversely, “Agatha Christie mysteries have an ornate, heavy-wood feeling, with dark woods. And many doors, so actors are coming in from many places, to add to the mystery.”
Musicals tend to be more minimalist and lend themselves to an open stage, as the
performers need room to dance and move about more.
“With ‘Beehive,’ we were going for a TV set feeling,” he says. “The last one, ‘Shout,’ we were trying to achieve the feel of a city street in London.”
He adds that they “cross paths a lot” with the costume designer, explaining, “For example, if we have red walls on the stage, we can’t have red costumes; we’d just have a lot of floating heads onstage then. Unless that’s what we want, the effect we’re going for.”
During a season, they create sets for nine shows.
“And then we also do two education conservatory shows,” he adds. “We do four tours that go out to the schools.
“It’s a busy theater.”
The sets are created in a warehouse just outside downtown Fort Myers.
It’s a large, nondescript concrete building with three roll-up doors, so trucks can back right up for easy loading.
What they don’t build themselves, they
obtain through Facebook Marketplace or antique malls, Clark says. Sometimes they’ll buy or borrow something from another theater.
He takes a visitor on a tour through the set shop.
“There’s a method to the madness,” he says. “We’re always rearranging.”
If there’s any chaos, it’s organized chaos. Carpentry and building are done in one area, painting in another (to prevent sawdust from getting into the paint.)
The carpentry area is where they build all the flats and walls and floors seen in a show
“Most everything you see on the stage that’s built, it’s built here,” Clark says.
In September, they built the set for ‘The Rat Pack Lounge,’ now playing in the ArtStage Studio Theatre through October 16.
“It’s set in a lounge bar,” he explains. The set includes a working bar that serves drinks to audience members during intermission.
The production team uses computer-aided drafting for reference. A top plan shows an ariel view of the stage, with each half inch on paper representing one foot in real life.
The painting area is tucked in a corner,

by shelves filled with gallons of paint and primer. Brushes hang in an orderly row above three industrial sinks. In a connected adjacent building is the props warehouse.
“I call it the antique mall,” Clark says. “It even has the same smell. This is where we store all the props, furniture, foliage. Anything we used in a show we try to save, so we can reuse.”
A sign on the wall is a replica of the iconic ‘Welcome to Las Vegas’ sign. Four coat racks of varying styles stand next to a variety of streetlamps. There are shelves of trophies, tea sets, knick-knacks. Swords, boat paddles and golf clubs stand side-by-side, grouped in oversized, heavy cardboard cylinders.
“Here’s an assortment of radios over the decades,” says Clark, waving at a shelf. “You never know what era we’re going to do a show in.
“It’s a time warp here,” he says, looking around.
There are rows of benches and pulpits and podiums, chairs galore of every shape and style: wicker, wood, Adirondack. Nearby stand a family rec room plaid sofa and velvet Victorian fainting couches.
“Sometimes we’ll negotiate with a business to borrow their stuff, if we don’t have it in storage here,” Clark says.
The tour continues past shelves of backpacks and briefcases, beer and soda bottles, martini shakers and flasks, tea kettles and toasters.
A separate room houses sewing machines and shelves of rolled up fabric, categorized by color and texture.
“We call it the Egg Room,” he says, explaining that someone had spilled yellow paint on the floor, causing someone to say, “It looks like egg.” The whimsical name stuck.
The building also stores plastic foliage from flowers to shrubs to tall fir trees.
Whatever is needed for the stage, it’ll likely to be found on the shelves or standing in a corner. And if it isn’t, the team can build it, no problem. Even if it’s a giant oak tree, or a flowering carpet.
“We’re all about the details,” says Clark. “That’s for sure.
“With enough money, you can pretty much achieve anything. The sets are all difficult in their own way and fun in their own way.” •
WHO’S AFRAID of ‘Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?’?
“Me,” says Gulfshore Playhouse founder and producing artistic director Kristen Coury. “I am.
“I think it’s the hardest thing I’ve ever done,” she explains. “Not the hardest play I’ve ever directed, but the hardest show to work on. Day in and day out, eight hours a day being in the living room with these people. That’s going to be hard.
“And then to make it make sense to an audience is not easy.”
But Coury’s never shied away from a challenge. She’s directing the 1962 classic Edward Albee drama at Gulfshore Playhouse.
by Nancy Stetson
Critics’ Circle Award for Best Play. It was selected for the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, but the advisory board overruled the jury, due to the profanity and sexual themes in the play.
In 1966, it was made into an award-winning film starring real-life couple Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton. (Taylor won an Oscar for Best Actress and Sandy Dennis, who played Honey, won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress) .
‘Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?’ is about “getting inside the illusion,” Coury says. “It’s looking at the distinction between truth and illusion.
The play takes place over a tumultuous evening at George and Martha’s house. He’s a middle-aged history professor whose career has stalled out and his wife is the daughter of the college’s president. They’re both drunk, bickering and arguing endlessly. Though it’s 2am, they’ve invited over the new biology professor, Nick, and his wife, Honey. They all proceed to drink more, and George and Martha play vicious games with each other and their guests. They are bitter, disillusioned and antagonistic.
Jeffrey Binder, portraying George, also admits to being afraid of ‘Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?’
“It’s a big challenge,” he says. “And it’s a classic. It’s one of those opuses that you can really sink your teeth into. It tests your talents as an actor.”
“I’m trying to dig my own way into this that doesn’t fight the script and doesn’t have me going into this with preconceived ideas of who they are,” Binder says. ”I am trying to approach it without a preconceived notion.”
Coury describes the play as “an actor’s dream, a cornucopia of possibility.”
Coury says, “It has a surprising amount of comedy in it.
“All of those things that make it difficult also make it exciting to work on. It’s not the kind of part and kind of show you have the chance to do all the time. It takes a commitment and a real great ensemble to work on it. It takes four really connected actors to tell the story well.”
Part of his trepidation comes with wanting to get it right.
“It’s such an iconic piece,” Binder says.
‘Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?’ won the 1963 Tony Award for Best Play and the New York Drama
Beth Hylton, who portrays Martha, is not only unafraid of the play, but had been urging Coury to produce the show at Gulfshore Playhouse.
Coury, initially reluctant, eventually agreed.
“Beth is one of the best actors I know,” she says.
“She’s been begging me for decades to do this show. I feel her time has come.”
She notes that Hylton recently played the role at Everyman Theatre in Baltimore.
“It went well,” Coury says, “It has a surprising amount of comedy in it. It was the right time for us to do it now. I feel it’s the right space, doing it in the studio theater. You can’t escape.
“And it was the right time for Jeff Binder to do it. With these two actors, now is the time. The one thing I know for sure, this is an actor’s dream.”
Ten years ago, Hylton portrayed Blanche in ‘A Streetcar Named Desire.’ That started her thinking about other possible dream roles she’d want to play. She loves roles that have her playing against type, the opposite of her personality. They invigorate her.
“Not the hardest play I’ve ever directed, but the hardest show to work on, says Kristen Coury.
“On the face of it, I’m sunny, I’m cheerful,” Hylton says. “I’m ambitious, but compassionate. Martha has always been pulling at my shirttails. She presents opposite the way I present.”
But Hylton adds, as she read the play and “leaned into it, I feel there is so much I recognize in her. On the face of it, it’s the opposite of me, but when I read it, I feel so akin to it. I thought: ‘I have to do this person. And the most exciting collaborations I’ve had have been with Kristen. I have to do this with Kristen!’”
“I don’t think you’re seeing Martha at her best. [This is] the result of years of disappointment. Martha is really smart, but it’s 1962: the avenues available to her are so limited. I understand that burning desire of ambition and no place to put it. What do I do with this feeling? A lot of women understand what this is.”
Hylton estimates the couple probably married in the late 1930s/early 1940s. At that time, she says, “You marry the smartest guy you can,” because your own opportunities as a woman are extremely limited.
“This marriage is the result of years of disappointment. All these verbal pokes and jabs are missed attempts to connect. It’s aggressive.”
Hylton sees two possibilities. “Did Martha’s father keep George from being successful, or was George not ambitious? Either her father
Binder
destroys his career, or her husband didn’t have enough ambition to take her along.”
‘Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?’ is about “getting inside the illusion,” Coury says. “It’s looking at the distinction between truth and illusion. So much of their world is fuzzy. They’ve been drinking so much. They’re playing games, emotional and mental, emotionally abusive games.
“It’s their strange way of loving each other. It’s very complex. I believe they love each other.”
Binder agrees.
He’s glad they’re producing it in the Struthers Studio because it’s such an intimate space.
“Talk about the audience being right there with you!” he says.
“That couple is fascinating; the games they play, the stories that they tell. Why do they stay together? Why do they love each other? Because they do. It’s just so complicated. It’s so complex. It’s filled with anger and shame and disappointment.”
Hylton says, “The most exciting collaborations I’ve had have been with Kristen. I have to do this with Kristen!’”
Despite her initial reluctance, Coury knew she would direct the play.
says, “Theater is meant to entertain us, but it’s entertaining us in order to teach us truths about ourselves as human beings.”
“I think there’s a quality about my style of directing,” she says. “I am relentlessly in search of the truth.”
Hylton agrees.
“Kristen is deeply curious and keenly invested in finding out the truth,” she says. “Theater is meant to entertain us, but it’s entertaining us in order to teach us truths about ourselves as human beings. She’s compassionate, she’s kind, she’s invested in the truth and she is ruthless in the investigation and the discovery of it.”
“Somewhere in the almost theater of the absurdist, complex, convoluted drunken escapades of this particular night, there is the truth, if you can get to the bottom it,” Coury says. “With my penchant of tracking down the truth and with these actors, I want to make sense of it in a way that many productions have not. I hope that will ultimately be extraordinarily satisfying to people.
“We cut our teeth and the audience’s teeth on theater like this: thinking theater. Provocative, controversial. It was extremely successful when it opened on Broadway, and
the movie has been successful. But I was petrified when I announced it, that there would be crickets in the room.”
After all, Gulfshore Playhouse’s previous season opened with ‘Anything Goes’ and closed with ‘Sweet Charity,’ two upbeat musicals diametrically opposite in tone from ‘Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?’
But when announced, it received the strongest reaction.
“It got the biggest gasp of all,” Coury says. Clocking in at over three hours long, ‘Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?’ is an epic.
“It’s a Greek drama, it’s terrifying,” says Hylton. “It’s like going into battle; I got my shield on my axe, my sword. I have to go into battle, and go into it joyfully. This is one of the greatest American plays ever written.”
Though many see it as dark, Hylton insists it’s humorous.
“It’s hilarious,” she says, noting that housewives who came to see the play in the 60’s were reported as ‘laughing hilariously’.”
“I think there’s something recognizable about the way long-married couples engage with each other. What makes it so fun and funny and sexy is that we’re invited in, to watch something we know we shouldn’t be watching.
“And it’s delightful. Because it isn’t us.” •
‘Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?’ is playing October 23-November 23 in the Struthers Studio at Gulfshore Playhouse in Bonita Springs.

lues/rock singer-songwriter Shannon McNally has been busy most of 2025. After a highly successful supporting slot with Tom Petty’s legendary bandmate Mike Campbell and his group The Dirty Knobs, McNally has rarely had any down time. But when she has, it’s been filled with collaborations, new music, and working on a new studio album.
“It’s been cumulative, but Mike Campbell has certainly kept me busy,” McNally says during a rare day off down the line from her Nashville home. “It’s been divine. It’s been like being on a rock and roll fantasy camp.”
The proverbial icing on the touring cake was performing at the original mecca of country music: the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville in late July.
“It was spectacular,” she says of the hallowed venue. “It really was. It was my Ryman debut and I think I had two of the best shows I ever performed solo. It was so warm. It felt like a home crowd because I live here in Nashville. I had a lot of love in the audience, and it’s a very ghostly place. You can call them ghosts or angels, whatever you want to call them. But there’s a lot of powerful energy in that building. So it was exciting. And extremely musical.”
The shows were also highlighted by a special guest who took in McNally’s soundcheck. Emmylou Harris, who essentially single-handedly resurrected the decaying venue with two shows in 1991 with her band the Nashville Ramblers (captured on the 1992 live album At The Ryman). She visited McNally and Campbell backstage. “It was a tenfold honor to get to see her,” McNally wrote in a July 28 Instagram post. “It’s no small thing to stand in the presence of those who inspired you in the first place.” McNally performed ‘Pancho and Lefty,’ a Townes Van Zandt song which Harris recorded for her 1976 album Luxur y Liner.
“I met her a number of times, but she came to the soundcheck which was really sweet,” she says. “And Mike got to meet her. I don’t know if he had gotten to meet her before, so he was excited to meet her because he’s a huge Emmy fan and Gram [Parsons] fan. So that was really sweet, to see them meet each other and hang out.”
Besides touring, McNally also reconnected with Son Volt’s Jay Farrar. Both she and Farrar recorded some material in 2008, but nothing happened with the songs. However, after the pandemic, Farrar touched base with McNally and returned
to the material. The result is Don’t Ya Take It Too Bad, a 12-track effort featuring nine covers and three original songs.
“Back then, we recorded a bunch of stuff, and I was pregnant with my daughter,” McNally recalls. “We just sort of stopped talking about them and went our separate ways and got into life. I got a call a year-and-a-half ago. Jay actually sent me a text saying, ‘Hey, I mixed those songs.’ I said, ‘What songs?’ He said those songs from way back when. He sent them to me and a few other ideas. He went and put the record out. So yeah, it was just kind of manna from heaven.”
McNally is no stranger to collaborations. She’s touring portions of this fall with Max Gomez on both the East Coast and West Coast. The musician also recently contributed ‘Tout Les Temps En Temps,’ a track on the Clifton Chenier covers album, A Tribute To The King Of Zydeco Clifton Chenier. The album also features an A-list of artists including The Rolling Stones, Steve Earle, and Lucinda Williams, among others.
“It’s nice to have a teammate sometimes,” she says of the collaborative process. “It just hard always going on your own, so I feel like you get the ball further down the field collaborating. Really, all music is a collaboration. Just because you’re a solo artist, you’re still bringing in a drummer, a bass player, a piano player, whatever instrument you don’t play. That’s all collaboration. It’s just nice to collaborate with artists as well. I just feel like I’m here to make music, and any time I get music out there, it’s a good thing.”
Besides those projects, McNally also recently covered the classic JJ Cale track ‘After Midnight.’ She says the song just came along as a means to ease herself into the creative process.
“I was in the studio working on other songs,” she explains. “Any time we start something, something comes up. It starts out with me just farting around in between songs and clearing my palette, thinking out loud. Catching the progression under my fingers and going, ‘Well, maybe we have a little time.’ Then it just comes together really quickly.
“I feel good about it because it feels light and new and fresh because it’s an interpretive cover. It’s like having a cookie after
your meal. It’s like checking in with yourself. That’s how I feel about covers. I don’t always know what the difference is between a cover and a cut. Songwriters called them cuts for years, and nobody called them a cover. I don’t know, I don’t know what the difference is. Actually, nothing.”
Regardless of what the appropriate description is, McNally says there isn’t a specific characteristic she looks for when covering or cutting another artist’s song. It’s more of an instinctual vibe she feels.
“I think for me, it’s kind of being in alignment with the artist that I associate the song with, or you feel like you’re in alignment with the groove or in alignment with the nature of the song,” she says. “Or the personality of the song. To me, it’s just going into a closet and changing clothes. What am I going to put on today? It’s like clothes. You’re aligning with some part of the song or the recording depending on what comes through in your own version.”
She says she doesn’t have a hard time knowing when a song is finished. Partly, it’s because of not having the financial luxury some artists have, enabling them to spend weeks or months obsessing over a song’s minutiae.
“The idea is to make music and put it out there,” she says. “And keep stirring the pot. That also informs your feelings about when something’s done. You shouldn’t have to make a living off your art. But sometimes you do. That’s not saying you can’t come back to it another time and do it again, things like that. I don’t really have the luxury of puttering around for too long. I appreciate those that can.”
McNally has come a long way since her 2000 debut, the Bolder Than Paradise EP. She also says the songwriting process remains a work in progress, but she has noticed some changes over the years.
“I’d say early on I wrote more, and it really came through freely,” she says. “I didn’t feel confined to standard forms. But over time, I realized the standard form is the standard form. Then you realize you have a shape-shifting ability. Do you want to be more of an instrumentalist than a songwriter? Or do you want to be just a lyricist? Those things change the dynamic of the song.
“So it’s not a stagnant process. It’s not like you do it once and all of a sudden you know how to write a
song. Although I do know how to form a song now, and that informs how you want the performance to go. Are we talking about a stand alone song or a recording or performance? Because you can write to all three.”
As for upcoming shows, McNally says it’s going to be a “dynamic rock show with country, blues, and classic rock.”
She also isn’t finished with Mike Campbell either. In fact, Campbell is producing her next studio album, one she’s currently working on now and hopes to release sometime next year. The foreseeable fulllength effort will be the first since McNally’s 2021 album The Waylon Sessions, which paid tribute to the late country music outlaw, Waylon Jennings.
“Really, all music is a collaboration. Just because you’re a solo artist, you’re still bringing in a drummer, a bass player, a piano player, whatever instrument you don’t play.”
McNally says she’s learned a lot interacting and touring with Campbell. She says there’s a resonance that first developed for the musician dating back to when she first
heard Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers and their iconic radio staples.
She says, “I realized that when you are in
alignment with the people you have a certain frequency with, you pick up those resonant frequencies,” adding, “The things that really inspire you as a kid are things you are. It just takes time for your wires to circle or for the circles to line up. It’s that same feeling. It’s not like trying something else. It’s how I feel for my life. It comes in and out of your fields of view.”
“Mike just wakes up every day, and he is that person. It’s the music, and the call is on. I guess I learned I had good taste a long time ago. I’m grateful that I had such a reaction to it as a kid. And I’m really grateful for the opportunity for things to have come full circle. If somebody told me Mike Campbell was going to come along and I’d tour with him for a year, I would’ve been shocked.” •

n the vibrant world of piano jazz, Dr. Zachary Bartholomew is the kind of artist who doesn’t just play music, he lives it. Performer, composer, educator—he wears all three hats with style. Jazz, after all, is more felt than explained. Born from the parades and soul of New Orleans, it’s a genre rooted in blues, swing, and ragtime. The piano often holds down the rhythm, giving soloists room to soar but when it’s the pianist’s moment, the keys become a focus for creativity. The best artists honor tradition while pushing boundaries. Whether he’s performing solo or leading an ensemble, Zach blends classic jazz piano with modern influences, crafting a sound that’s both timeless and fresh. His improvisations are thoughtful, his compositions emotionally rich, and his stage presence magnetic. Audiences don’t just hear his music, they feel it.
Zach’s story starts in Sopchoppy, Florida, a small coastal town nestled up against the Apalachicola National Forest. No musical conservatories, just nature and lots of room to roam and explore. His musical spark came from his younger sister’s piano lessons, which led to his own lessons. Soon he was hooked. “I didn’t have the typical path,” he says. “I didn’t come from a musical family, I wasn’t in a high school band, I had no early jazz training.”
A pivotal moment came during a family trip to New Orleans, where Zach witnessed a ‘jazz adjacent’ band live for the first time. The keyboardist’s
performance was a revelation—he realized the piano could be a vehicle for creative expression. Inspired, he dove into Mark Levine’s Jazz Piano Book and began formal lessons with Bill Peterson at Florida State University.
Though he initially pursued engineering and international affairs, Zach’s passion for music never waned. Summer jazz camps, independent study in Siena, Italy, and performances in Tallahassee helped solidify his commitment. “Being away and then going to camp, then gigs at Tallahassee, they all converged to make me realize music needed to be central in my life.” Eventually, he returned to FSU to complete both his undergraduate and master’s degrees in music, dedicating himself fully to jazz. The hard work paid off. Zach was a two-time finalist in the Jacksonville Jazz Piano Competition (2016 & 2017) and quickly became one of Florida’s most in-demand jazz pianists. Today, he performs all over the state and locally holds a Resident Artist position at Arts Bonita.
As Resident Artist at Arts Bonita, Zach curates monthly jazz concerts that bring top-tier talent to Southwest Florida. He’s just wrapped up his second year of residency and is gearing up for a third season this fall.
Arts Bonita, formerly known as the Centers for the Arts Bonita Springs, is a cultural cornerstone in Southwest Florida. With two campuses dedicated to visual and performing arts, it offers classes, workshops, and performances yearround. From sculpture gardens to jazz concerts, it’s a place where creativity thrives and Zach is right at the heart of it. This season’s concert series is shaping up to be a jazz lover’s dream. Each show is themed around iconic albums, and Zach writes a brand-new piece for every performance. It’s not just a concert, it’s an experience.
The concert lineup includes:
September 11: Dave Brubeck’s ‘Time Out’
October 2: Passion, Peace, and ‘The Real McCoy’
November 13: Blues, Bop & Soul: Hank Mobley’s ‘Soul Station’ featuring Jeff Ellwood
December 11: Vince Guaraldi’s ‘A Charlie Brown Christmas’
January 8: Jazz & the Spanish Tinge
Februatry 12: Jazz & Film
March 18: Women in Jazz featuring Nicole Bartholomew
April 9: Jazz in the Roaring Twenties
May 7: Bird Lives!
June 4: Nothing But The Blues
July 9: The Music of George Gershwin
August 13: The Art of the Trio
Each performance is a blend of homage and innovation, with Zach’s original compositions adding a fresh voice to familiar classics.
Zach’s debut album, Balancing Act, is a deep dive into modern jazz. Six years in the making, it’s a blend of pre-pandemic compositions and fresh post-2022 ideas. “It’s about balance,” he says. “Group chemistry vs solo freedom, old vs new, playful vs. serious.” The album climbed the JazzWeek and NACC charts, earning praise for its emotional depth and rhythmic complexity. Reviewer Edward Blanco at All About Jazz called it “an impressive musical statement” infused with Afro-Cuban rhythms and European classical influences.
The album’s ten tracks showcase Zach’s range as a composer and performer. Tracks include ‘Crazy Socks’ (and its trio version), ‘Sunny Days Driven By,’ ‘Bring the Noise,’ ‘Hobo’s Lullaby,’ ‘Balancing Act,’ ‘The Long and Winding Road,’ ‘Time Apart,’ ‘There and Back Again,’ ‘Mirror Image,’ and ‘Midnight Nefarity.’ Each piece tells a story, blending technical mastery with emotional resonance. It is truly a jazz journey.
After various teaching gigs at higher learning institutions and scores of private pupils, Zach now serves as a full-time professor at Florida Memorial University. He says learning jazz “was never easy for me, which made the process both challenging and deeply rewarding. That struggle has sharpened my ability to teach and has given me a unique perspective.
Some musicians just know how to play but can’t always explain it. I had to learn how it all works, and now I can break it down for others in a way that makes sense.”
As an educator, Zach brings the same passion and precision to the classroom that he does to the stage. He inspires the next generation of jazz musicians not only to master their craft but to understand the cultural and historical significance of the music they play. “As long as you’re trying, that’s what I care about,” Zach says of his students. “Some are naturally talented, others struggle—but it’s the work ethic that matters. You’ve got to be ready for luck, and work hard enough to meet it when it comes.”
His commitment to outreach and accessibility underscores his belief that jazz is not just an art form, but music that should be accessible to everyone, regardless of background or experience. His ‘Jazz Access Tour,’ funded by Florida’s Artist Performance on Tour grant, brings world-class jazz to underserved schools and communities.
Zach and wife Nicole live in Miami, where she teaches musicology at University of Miami’s Frost School of Music. He says, “Nicole’s background is in performance, and she is incredibly versatile as a vocalist, as well as a talented pianist.” The couple occasionally collaborate, their recent ‘Jazz & Romance’ concert at Arts Bonita was a crowd favorite, blending love songs with lush harmonies and heartfelt improvisation.
“I can’t say enough nice things about her. She has a beautiful voice and is a ‘singer’s singer’. She is the complete package,” he says, “And she is my favorite person in the world.”
His improvisations are thoughtful, his compositions emotionally rich, and his stage presence magnetic.
South Florida has become home. “I wasn’t sure at first,” he laughs. “But we got married here, bought a house in Kendall, and built a life. It feels right.” Between his Artist Residency, live performances and academic schedule, his calendar is packed. “It’s a lot of work,” he says, “but it’s the kind of work I love. I’m grateful every day to have the opportunity to play for audiences.”
Despite the whirlwind of gigs, teaching, and composing, Zach stays connected to the music. “Jazz is about listening,” he says, adding, “To your bandmates, to the audience, to yourself. It’s a conversation, not a monologue.”
With a new season ahead, Zach’s momentum shows no signs of slowing. He’s carving out a space where tradition and innovation meet. Whether he’s on stage, in the classroom, or behind the piano composing, Zach Bartholomew is doing more than playing jazz. He’s honoring its traditions while shaping its future. •
