History Museum Explores Civil Rights Movement In Florida
The groundbreaking exhibit, ‘Civil Rights in the Sunshine State’ is one of the first attempts to view the Florida civil rights movement through a statewide lens. From Miami to Tallahassee and St. Petersburg to St. Augustine, the Florida movement is explored at the local, state and national levels.
This exhibit explores the struggle of African Americans for
equality in Florida from the end of Reconstruction (1877) through the 1970s. It examines the deep history of black activism in the state and reveals the multigenerational effort of men and women whose courage and sacrifice ended centuries of institutionalized racism.
‘Civil Rights in the Sunshine State" was curated by the Museum of Florida History to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the signing of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and includes historical narratives, archival images, films featuring footage of civil actions and interviews, and oral histories. It is augmented with a Southwest Florida segment in collaboration with the Lee County Black History Society
Life at Babcock Ranch
Ronald Newsom’s new book, Living and Farming on the Babcock Ranch: Florida’s Last Frontier, not only tells the story of the Ranch’s rich and varied history, but also offers a glimpse into what life was like at the Ranch for the people living and working the land.
News om began visiting his uncle at the Babcock Ranch in the early 1960s and his father moved the family to the area in 1966.
The book is a personal recollection of those times, working hard in the fields harvesting squash, cucumbers, melons, and tomatoes, as well as dodging alligators, rattlesnakes and cattle as he played on the expansive property.
Chock full of personal stories and photographs, Living and farming on the Babcock Ranch helps readers appreciate the wild Florida that is too quickly disappearing as well as understanding the lives of the farmworkers and cowboys that made that land their home.

For the Love of Basketball and Art W
ITH THE RECENT PASSING of Boston Celtics legend
Celtic teammate
Jim Loscutoff, basketball fans knew they had lost someone special. A California-born power forward, he played his entire record-setting professional career with the Celtics from 1955-1964 – world champions seven of the ten years. Coached by the renowned Hall of Famer Red Auerbach, the lineup also included greats Bob Cousy, Bill Russell, Bill Sharman, Sam Jones, and Tommy Heinsohn. Upon retiring, Loscutoff insisted his jersey number 18 not be retired so future Celtics could proudly wear it. Instead, the banner raised in his honor at the Boston Garden simply reads ‘Loscy,’ his nickname. The number was later retired to honor Celtics great, Dave Cowens.
Post-Celtics, Loscutoff and his wife Lynn opened a summer day camp, Camp Evergreen in Andover, Massechusetts, which is still owned and operated by family members. Jim also coached basketball at Boston State College (now Boston College) for many years.
Written by his wife, Lynn Leon Loscutuff, Loscy & Me: The Artist & the Boston Celtics Legend, Jim Loscutoff… A Scrapbook Memoir, tells not just his story, but their story together, portraying what life was like over the years for Lynn behind the scenes as wife, mother and aspiring painter with dreams of her own.
Lynn recalls the fledgling team, “When Jim was playing in those early years, Boston was not at all interested in basketball; they loved hockey. As a young fan, I kept a scrapbook of my husband. The reporters would give me the original 8 x 10s. I kept those. They were pretty special and at that time neither the Celtics or the newspapers were keeping archives.” ‘Loscy and Me’ is that archive.
Life as the spouse of a professional athlete, especially back in those days, could be a lonely time, with all the ‘away’ games; then constant practices and commitments while home. As it turns out, writing this book was somewhat cathartic for Lynn. “When I started writing it 30 years ago it was to vent a little of my frustration because of the rules that Red set up as far as the wives were concerned. We were off the radar. The publishers would say that I’d have to write my own story – so I did. Then as time went on, I fought for my own interests.”
She continues, “To me, all of the years were very interesting. All of the years were very different. The years Jim played and we had babies. Then when we started our camp and Jim and I were working together, we
by Julie Clayfound how different we were. Then I went into Boston and went into the arts.”
In the book, Lynn details how her goal had always been to paint, but raising their three children and supporting her husband’s livelihood came first. It wasn’t until after he retired from the Celtics and subsequent coaching career, and after they got Camp Evergreen off the ground, that Lynn even considered rekindling her passion for painting. Celtic teammate Tommy Heinsohn, as it turned out, also happened to be an artist, encouraging Lynn to once again pick up a paintbrush. She also got involved with Boston’s famed Copley Society of Art, eventually joining its Board of Directors.
“I was able to start really painting and traveling and got a studio for myself. I was fortunate to have all the opportunities when I was writing the book. The world was my canvas,” Lynn shares, “When I actually wrote a couple of books on painting and traveling, I had the opportunity to teach on cruise ships. I really enjoyed seeing different things and sketching them. What’s significant was that I was able to take my love of painting all over the world. When I look back at everywhere I went, I am astounded.”
One memory in particular always comes to mind. “The first time I was invited to teach on the Queen Elizabeth II was when it was going out just after 9/11. That experience was so extraordinary. Most of the American passengers cancelled, but my friend and I went. It was a memorable time. At first I had 20 people in a class, then the class grew to 100 students and people watching. Most of these students didn’t speak English and they were sharing equipment. The crew would be looking for papers and pencils when we docked. What I realized was how these people needed to be close to each other. It’s probably the most memorable teaching experience I’ve ever had.”
Teaching and being outdoors are two of her favorite things, the latter of which is reflected in her work consisting largely of vibrant garden displays. “I concentrate mostly on watercolors. I work on a particular kind of paper called Yupo. It has a surface that allows you to wipe off and start over. People think that watercolor is not correctable, but I’ve come upon
Tommy Heinsohn, as it turned out, also happened to be an artist, encouraging Lynn to pick up a paintbrush.Jim Locutoff was a star on seven World Champion Boston Celtic teams, with teammates Bill Russell and Bob Cousey.
this particular technique.” She continues, “I love color and line and letting the paint move around, and to teach a method that allows the freedom of the watercolors.”
Operating out of studios both in Gloucester, Massechusetts as well as here in Naples at Artisans Plaza, Lynn has also taught at the Naples Art Association.
Acclaimed painter and author today, devoted Celtics wife and mother in an earlier, busier time, Mrs. Loscutoff has certainly experienced a life of excitement.
She reminices, “It was different then. We all sat together at games. We helped each other with babies. Players often carpooled to the airport and practice. We were some young couples just struggling along in that particular employment. Now it’s a huge business all over the world and the salaries are so incredibly high. In those days all the players had summer jobs,” adding “I miss the camaraderie. Jim missed all the friendships that he had with his teammates.”
“My husband passed away December 1 and the Celtics invited [the family] to their home game on December 9. We sat in a private box, about 20 or 30 of us, and when the team came out to warm up they were all
wearing shirts that said ‘Loscy’ on them. They also acknowledged Jim on the scoreboard. It was quite a tribute and very special.”
Her Naples studio is one of 16 that are hosting open houses and will be showcasing artists’ works as part of an upcoming benefit on Sunday, March 20 for the Naples Parkinson’s Association. This is a cause dear to Lynn’s heart as Jim suffered from Parkinson’s disease in his later years. Studios will be open 1-5pm.
On Saturday, March 26, from 10am12pm, Lynn will be signing her book at Barnes & Noble in the Waterside Shop, located at 5377 Tamiami Trail N. in Naples.
Loscy & Me, the Artist & the Boston Celtics Legend, Jim Loscutoff… A Scrapbook Memoir is available in bookstores and online. For infor-
mation about the book as well as Lynn’s artwork, visit www.Lynnloscutoff.com. Lynn’s studio is #8 at Artisan’s Plaza, located at 5760 Shirley St. in Naples. For information, call 776-2680. •
Divine Women
by Carol DeFrankINEQUALITY OF GENDERS is a current popular topic of conversation, commentary and even news magazines. While much has been recorded on the issue, it takes on a new life where Dr. Kyra Belan is concerned. Author, artist, art historian, mythologist, and educator, Belan took the subject and combined it with her belief that historically, women have been plagued with an inferior position, even in mythology. Her passion was to correct the status quo, so she put aside six years of her life to write a book titled Divine Ladies in America
The book was written with the hope that knowledge would help validate the strength of women. Kyra truly believes there is a gross imbalance of power in our society and that powerful women equate to successful cultures. “I have always thought that females have been ignored throughout mythological history and men have always been in the forefront,” adding “But, if you do the research, you discover many important women figures that haven’t received the recognition they deserve. I find these ladies interesting and feel that their stories are important to women and girls. It not only gives them insight into their heritage, it will hopefully make them proud.”
In the introduction, she writes, “Two thousand years of patriarchal order supported by a male dominated religion conditioned women to accept secondary roles within the Christian Church.” She continues to state that her mission is “to clarify and expand upon the knowledge and understanding of sacred femininity within the diversity of America in the new millennium.”
Lady Liberty graces the cover of the book, which has a chapter dedicated to her. Belan speaks of ‘the gigantic woman’ with utmost respect; referring to her as “a powerful symbol for American democracy, an archetypal Goddess, a direct prototype of the ancient Roman Goddess of Liberty.”
Another chapter is devoted to the Goddess Athena and her American Parthenon. In an effort to prove the importance of this mythical lady, Belan explains, “Through her we can reconnect to our ancient classical heritage of western civilization. This Goddess is a part of the women’s movement, spirituality movement, New Age movement, and the Pagan American movement. As a shape
shifter, she can be whatever we want her to be at different times in our lives.”
Other chapters examine femaile icons of significance such as Our Lady of Guadalupe, Mother Earth, and Mary Magdalene.
From the beginning, the concept and contents of this book made it so important that the need for her to own it became imperative. Although Kyra has six other books in print via conventional means, Belan self-published Divine Ladies in America. “That’s not to say that later I won’t go the conventional way, but when I was writing, it was imperative that I do everything at my own pace without dealing with a deadline or outside editing.” She adds, “ I did what I felt was necessary to get an in-depth knowledge of all the ladies I wanted to incorporate in the prose. I needed time to think, to make sure I was able to research in a variety of ways including travel, internet, personal contact, scholarly research and actual experience.”
A lot of travel was involved as it was critical to get her own ‘take’ on the information available. “I visited many places and when it wasn’t possible to go to a particular country I either contacted the powers that be in a similar place in the United States or obtained permission to participate in ceremonies that replicate the ones that take place in the original countries.
For instance, she didn’t fly to India but was able to attend ceremonies at a Hindu Temple in the United States. On the other hand, she did travel to New York for Lady Liberty and to Mexico to research Our Lady of Guadalupe, the Goddess of the Americas, even though there are a number of places that have celebrations in her honor every December 12.
Finally, she felt the manuscript was perfected. The immense efforts were done willingly because her passion to make this vital information accessible was fulfilled.
In her own words, “Divine Ladies describes and analyzes the subtle but powerful presence that these women have in contemporary American pop cul-
“When I was writing, it was imperative that I do everything at my own pace without dealing with a deadline or outside editing.”
“I believe that our culture can be greatly enriched by including the feminine heritage .”
ture. The legendary and heroic background of these icons takes us all over the world. Their existence is manifested on many levels besides mythical; it is also spiritual and emotional. I want females to understand their mythical presence within the world and how they continue to evolve. I believe that our culture can be greatly enriched by including the feminine heritage into our mainstream society.”
Belan is also an acclaimed and popular artist, and takes pride in all of the illustrations that appear throughout the book. They were computer generated using personal drawings and photographs.
While artists are known to focus on one or two mediums, Belan enjoys them all. “I appreciate that I am different from most artists because I don’t specialize in a particular medium,” she says. “I like drawing, painting, mixed media, digital art, colored pencil, installations and pho-
tography. And as you can see in Divine Ladies, I even embrace technology in my art.”
That being said, she is known for her portraiture and a style she refers to as ‘magical realism,’ because it has surreal elements.
Kyra is already well into another book that will focus on installation art and will be published by Mellon Press. She explains that instal-
lation art consists of a number of techniques and themes, “Everything is site-specific. An artist is given space parameters, usually interior space, but on occasion is expanded to the outdoors. “Sometimes I have to space crunch because I am allowed to only use the floor and walls. Other times I can use the ceiling and not the floor space because several events may be scheduled simultaneously. I work with the specifications dictated by the institution. It’s a lengthy process.” She is currently custom designing an installation piece for the Sidney and Berne Davis Art Center in Fort Myers.
Belan’s artworks are found in numerous public and private collections, and her work has been featured in countless publications. Building a Green Future
by Dean Simms-EliasHow to Thrive in the Next Economy: Designing Tomorrow's World Today
John Thackara THAMES & HUDSONHow to Thrive in the Next Economy is a manual on how communities can integrate sustainable alternatives into their life and work. John Thackara has been called one of the greatest voices on sustainability and has served as a designer, educator and activist, leading the school of thought on sustainable development in local economies. The book brings you on a journey through a collection of anecdotes and ideas on how communities can work together to thrive.
Thackara shares how he developed his philosophy on rethinking everyday functions through sustainable design, with examples of inter-connections that enrich both people and the environment. The book encourages readers to reassess their understanding of how humans can collaborate and cohabit with nature. It is full of smart solutions to social challenges using clever design, advocacy and organization.
Intertwining the disciplines of ecology, sociology, urban design, and economics, Thackara develops a holistic view through which to design a renewed world. He explores the history of the environmental movement and highlights the accumulation of knowledge on sustainable civil practices.
Thackara describes how artists in different cultures open our eyes to different ways of looking at and acting in the world. He explains how the health of living systems, not money, is the ultimate measure of wealth.
Sustainable Innovation: Build Your Company’s Capacity to Change the World
Andrew Hargadon STANFORD BUSINESS BOOKSThe world of business is changing and organizations are looking for ways to evolve with the 21st century. Companies are realizing that sustainable values and social responsibility can be harnessed as a competitive advantage. Sustainable Innovation is a business theorem and change management guide that declares sustainability to be the most vital strategy for companies in the the 21st century economy.
Hargadon’s casual writing outlines how corporate culture can instill an innate sense of values and initiative to innovate through sustainability. He draws upon his vast knowledge of corporate governance and economic dynamics to illustrate how a road towards sustainable innovation can be paved in any company. Sprinkling in lessons from corporate history
and personal anecdotes, Hargadon steers away from the standard trial-and-error method of innovation and towards innovating through one's values, emphasizing the importance of adaptability and horizontal corporate structures that allow the innovative ideas to surface.
Describing best practices for companies working for a triple bottom line (people, planet, profit) the book proves how sustainability generates multitude benefits beyond just reputational gain. Hargadon offers many tips on how to act as a change agent reforming corporate practices to be more environmentally and socially responsible.
A must read for anyone starting a business, this book encourages both leaders and employees to proactively adapt by utilizing sustainable innovation. He skillfully explains how in our increasingly interconnected world a company who neglects its externalities will eventually hurt their bottom line. Thackara compels enterprising professionals to meet the impending challenges brought about by climate change and overcome them through values-driven sustainable innovation.

I’ll start a yoga practice when…
When?
The answers are many.
When I lose a few pounds, after this semester, when my busy life settles down, when I get caught up on my bills, when there’s a yoga studio near me, when the kids are... And the list goes on.
When is the best time to begin your yoga practice?
Most yoga teachers will tell you that this is a common question they are asked. A collective answer most of them would offer is – Now!
Yes, but that is an answer for the 20-70 year olds seeking something more in their lives.
Personally, I feel that yoga classes in Kindergarten would be an asset to our society and to all sentient beings. Beginning a yoga practice at 4 or 5 years old (or earlier) would teach children that the physical aspects of yoga are a great regimen for a healthy life
and mindset. Yoga is much more than going to recess, and it is not just gym or PE.
The principles of yoga include beautiful moral precepts that are neither religious nor spiritual. In a non-verbal way, yoga says ‘accept the parts that speak to you, and give little or no attention to the rest.’ The principles of yoga teach you how to think, feel, love, and live a healthier, saner life, and even a spiritual life, if you want to explore that side of you.
Learning yoga from Swami Vishnu Devananda, founder of the Sivananda Organization, wonderfully ingrained Five Points of Yoga into my daily life.
• Proper Exercise
• Proper Breathing
• Proper Relaxation
•Proper Diet
• Positive Thinking and Meditation
What more could a kindergartener want or need but a fun, loving, caring, disciplined half-hour every day at school? This is how we can foster peace in everyday life.
Proper Exercise
Yoga keeps the body healthy, happy and nourished so that it can gain and maintain vitality. A daily yoga practice of at least 15-20 minutes is a way to live to a ripe old age in the best of physical, mental, and even spiritual condition. The subtlety of yoga Asanas provides everything the body needs for optimal health and strength. For example, if one does the Sun Salutations as a daily practice, or does some type of hot or power yoga, it is possible to reduce weight gain, and even lose weight!
Proper Breathing
Bringing attention to breath is often used as a means to reduce stress from things like test taking, driving, swimming, childbirth, and even pain management, to name a few. What better vehicle do we have for the mind to have a resting place, a place to rejuvenate, than by bringing benefit to the respiratory and circulatory systems of the body?
In yoga, an emphasis on deep abdominal
breathing brings attention to proper breath. When a baby is born you will notice the abdomen rises on inhalation, and descends when exhaling. Somewhere in life, most people adopt just the opposite flow and, with that, often take shallow breaths. Yogic and mindfulness breathing re-teaches the correct flow of breath to not only increase lung capacity, but to increase Prana, the force of nature that lives within all of us. Pranayama means the control of the Prana, and is key in controlling the mind. A phrase often used in yoga classes is to breathe more than air, to imagine breathing in that vital life force energy. Isn't it funny that the media would have you believe Prana is related to mattresses or sleep?
Proper Relaxation
Deep relaxation includes physical, mental and emotional rest. Savasana, or ‘Corpse Pose,’ teaches us to relax every part of our body, from the toes up or the head down, through auto-suggestion and visualization. Savasana is the ultimate rest, and can be
equated to a nap or a resting place within, where one can identify with higher, healthier, more joyful or spiritual aspects of themselves.
Proper Diet
Vegetarianism is the preferred choice in the Yogic diet, but moderation and balance in all aspects of nutrition is what gives yogic power. Natural and simple foods are key. The old adages ‘an apple a day keeps the doctor away’ and ‘you are what you eat’ still ring true. Diet affects our digestion, metabolism, moods, mental capacities, weight, and Prana. A yogi will eat to live, not live to eat, as a means that increases his/her vital life force energy.
Positive Thinking and Meditation
Our thoughts create who we are, what we do, and how we live. Meditation is a centuries-old practice to increase awareness, to possibly experience and gain a glimpse into the unknown. It is a means to consciously relax the mind enough to ask ‘Who am I? Why am I here? What do I want
to be right now? and What do I want to achieve in this life?’ The techniques of meditation are numerous. Simplicity is most valuable and a mindfulness practice that can be taught to a 5-year-old child will bring benefits that will last for the rest of their life!
A Practice
Close your eyes. Count your breath in and out from one to four while imagining the blank screen behind your eye lids and in front of your eye balls. Yes – that one! Tell yourself that nothing will disturb you, keep your body still no matter what, and don't scratch the itch. Let it just Be. Let your mind notice whatever it will allow as it attempts to continue counting the breath or “Prana.’ As soon as you notice that you’re off a number, gently bring it back to one and start again. Breath is life force and you are that force of nature. •

Terell Stafford and Rayford Griffin have recorded touching tributes to their heroes.
All That Jazz
by Andrew EliasTERELL STAFFORD
BrotherLee Love
CAPRI RECORDS
Philadelphian Terell Stafford’s loving tribute to the late great Lee Morgan, one of the greatest trumpeters of the 1950s & 1960s. Morgan joined Dizzy Gillespie’s band at age 18, played on Coltrane’s classic Blue Train album, was one of Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers, and recorded some of the best jazz albums of all time.
Stafford doesn’t so much recreate Morgan’s sound or reinterpret his tunes as he reimagines how Morgan might play his music now. Stafford tackles classics like ‘Candy,’ ‘Speedball’ and ‘Petty Larceny’ as well as few more obscure titles, always tight and driving –just like Lee.
RAYFORD GRIFFIN
Reflections of Brownie
RAZOREDGE RECORDS
Also on any short list of the greatest jazz trumpeters of all time is Clifford Brown. At the time of his untimely death in a car crash at the age of 25, Brown had just recorded, in four short years, four albums with Max Roach that still stand among the most iconic jazz albums ever.
Drummer Rayford Griffin pays tribute to the music of his Uncle Clifford, updating the music for a new audience. With the help of musicians like the late keyboardist George Duke, saxophonist Everett Harp, and trumpeter Nicholas Payton – as well as Clifford Brown Jr. and Clifford Brown III – Rayford breathes new life into gems ‘Daahoud’ and ‘Cherokee.’
CARLOS HENRIQUEZ
The Bronx Pyramid
BLUE ENGINE RECORDS
Bassist Henriquez has been playing with the likes of Tito Puente, Eddie Parlmieri and Celia Cruz since he was 14, and was plucked out of high school by Wynton Marsalis for his Septet and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra. Now, with his debut album, he mas-
terfully mixes the varied exotic musical influences of his life, from the street beats of The Bronx to Puerto Rican and Dominican rhythms of the clubs to classical melodies. These inspirations are the musical pyramid that makes this album so rich and refreshing.
PAQUITO D'RIVERA
Paquito & Manzanero
SUNNYSIDE RECORDS
Paquito D’Rivera has been one of the most acclaimed jazz saxophonists for decades, still regularly winning Latin Grammys and relentlessly releasing new material. His newest album explores and celebrates the music of the great Mexican composer Armando Manzanero. From tango to waltz to bebop, D’Rivera’s beautiful arrangements and tasteful soloing make this album irresistibly romantic and soulful. Manzanero sings on three tracks and although his voice seems a bit frail, his emotional phrasing is devastatingly affecting
CHARLES LLOYD & THEMARVELS I Long To See You BLUE NOTE RECORDS
Lloyd, one of the jazz icons of the 1960s, has teamed up here with Bill Frisell and Greg Leisz, two of the most innovative guitarists around to create an album that defies categorization. Mostly instrumental (Willie Nelson sings ‘Last Night I had the Strangest Dream’ and Norah Jones sings Billy Preston’s ‘You Are So Beautiful to Me’), it can just as easily be described as a jazz album as it could be described as Americana or even spiritual music.
Opening with a powerful take on Dylan’s ‘Masters of War,’ with blistering dueling guitars by Leisz and Frisell leading into a wild solo by Lloyd, makes it clear that this is no ordinary recording. The band dissects and rebuilds tra-
ditional spirituals ‘Shenandoah,’ ‘All My Trails’ and ‘Abide by Me,’ and swings through Lloyd’s originals with the abandon of musicians locked in a groove that comes along few times in a career.
An indefinable but essential album for those interested in truly new music beyond genre.
JAZZ AT LINCOLN CENTER ORCHESTRA with WYNTON MARSALIS Live in Cuba
BLUE ENGINE RECORDS
This two-CD set captures the excitement and phenomenal performances over a three-night stand at Havana’s Mella Theater in 2010. The band is in high gear, and joined on some tracks by Chucho Valdes’ Afro-Cuban Messengers, blowing through jazz standards, Afro-Cuban numbers and modern original compositions with equal aplomb and you can hear the crowds explode in appreciation at the end of each track.
A true celebration, these concerts reaffirmed the power of music to bring people together
and this recording can be a wonderful reminder of the incredible music created on those hot nights in Havana.
GEORGE CABLES In Good Company
HIGHNOTE RECORDS
Renowned pianist Cables is what you would call reliable. His playing is understated, but intelligent, flavoring his bebop chops with flourishes of funk. His newest release, an excellent collection performed with a trio Essiet Essiet on bass and Victor Lewis on drums), is among his finest. Tracks like ‘Lush Life,’ ‘Love You madly’ and ‘It Don’t Mean a Thing (If It Ain’t
Got That Swing)’ are wonderful, with Cables’ solos, while not particularly innovative, are as entertaining as ever.
HERLIN RILEY New Direction
MACK AVENUE RECORDS
Riley’s debut album finds the drummer exploring the many influences he absorbed in a music family in New Orleans. Riley takes his Afro-Cuban, jazz, and blues experiences, and shakes it into a sound that is both new yet familiar. An enticing collection of modern New Orleans music, funky jazz for folks who enjoy their musical gumbo on the hot side. •
