EDITOR’S NOTES April, a month of laughter and tears. It was the month when the 27th Cabinet of The Finance Students’ Society, HKUSTSU took up the responsibility of the Executive Committee of the Society a year ago. It’s also the month when our year of office is approaching an end, passing on the roles and responsibilities to the newly elected cabinet.

The year wasn’t easy for you and me. Situations occurred out of our expectations: movements, viruses, suspension of classes, cancelation of events…They were not planned, all we could do was to bring the best out of it. We tried our very best to serve our members, to provide a platform for you to ease, to learn, and to improve yourselves. We documented the events, words of wisdom from our guests, advisor and professor, your voices, and words that the 27th Executive Committee would like to tell you, following the sequence of the theme of the Cabinet: Aspire, Navigate, Implement, Flourish. This theme accompanied us all the way through, reminding us to work things out step by step, so that we would flourish one day.

Dear readers, when you flip over this book, it is the time when the torch of flame is being passed on. Indeed, the events happened in this year would be recorded in the Book, but you would be the only ones to know what happened in the events: knowing each other, growing stronger bonds, or even building significant and lifelong relationships in your years of university life.

All the memories would be carved in our minds. The Finance Yearbook bears the mission not only to record what happened in every event but also to help us recall all the sweet bits and pieces that you and I experienced.

From the bottom of my heart, I wish every one of you to enjoy the Book, earn something from reading it, and most importantly, to recall the happy moments you had in FINA. May it be the memories that you would still remember when you read it again years after.

CHAIRPERSON’S WORDS After a fruitful year of office at The Finance Students’ Society, HKUSTSU, our journey as the 27th Session is coming to an end. It is to our greatest honor to serve as the Executive Committee of The Finance Students’ Society, HKUSTSU, Session 2019-2020.

As the current session of our Society, we have dedicated our focus and effort in creating an environment for our members to connect with the industry of financial services. It is our mission to engage our members in both the Society and the faculty by organizing an array of events ranging from Mentorship Programs to Orientation Camps that foster amity.

The voyage our session embarked on was filled with waves of surprises and it has certainly not been easy for us. However, with the endeavor of the Executive Committee alongside the support from our members, advisors, mentors, faculty as well as relations of the Society, we were able to push through and reach the end of the path. We are eternally grateful for the help from all parties and would like to extend our deepest gratitude to all of you.

Above all, I would like to give my whole-hearted thanks to my cabinet. With all the unexpected events throughout the past year, we have supported each other in making the best out of the situation and one another. It is the feeling of affinity that my cabinet cherishes and hopes to convey to our members, both old and new. The way my cabinet perseveres in serving our Society despite the hardships illustrates the sense of belonging and professionalism our cabinet values. I am gratified to be able to work with such a talented team and take our Society to new heights with our exceptional expedition.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Sub-Committee members of Finance Festival 2019 and Mentorship Program 2019 for making our events a great success.

With the end of the 27th Session approaching, it is time to pass the baton to our successors. I am confident that in their hands, Finavior, The Elected Cabinet of The Finance Students’ Society, HKUSTSU, Session 2020-2021 can inherit the legacy and values to bring the Society to new frontiers.

I sincerely hope The Finance Students’ Society, HKUSTSU and the 28th Cabinet a remarkable and prosperous year ahead.

FOREWORD FROM OUR ADVISOR 2019 and 2020 are very special years.

While we in Hong Kong had been going through political and social turmoil since the second half of 2019 with unforgettable moments where chaotic pictures were all around us nearly every day, the Sino-US trade war and many other global events had also added shade to the economic and social stability not only in Hong Kong, but for the PRC at large. When hopes were surfacing out of the social movement and trade war upon the fall of 2019, the lethal challenge of the COVID – 19 epidemic seeped in, breaking the dawn of 2020.

Against these backgrounds, how can our future talents help contribute to the revival of Hong Kong? As the talented youth and young leaders of the future, our society at large will look upon you as ultimate hopes. Under the leadership of The Finance Students’ Society, HKUSTSU, you are guided with the clear message to Aspire, Navigate, Implement, and Flourish, or “FINA” in short. With aspiration, you are committed to create positive impacts powered by your passion. With navigation, you will be able to steer your way to success. Action speaks louder than words, and success only comes with proper implementation. And lastly, our future to flourish is all at your hands.

Given these missions, may all students of The Finance Students’ Society, HKUSTSU step up and contribute yourselves to serve our society to regain from turmoil, and be able to face future challenges with courage, wisdom and determination.

INTERVIEW WITH PROFESSOR LYNN PI We are honored to have Professor Lynn Pi from the Department of Finance to share her insights and give valuable advice to our members and fellow students. We are truly grateful for the continuous support from the Department and all Finance professors throughout our year.

This year, we have had lessons on Zoom in the majority of the time. How does the online teaching mode affect teaching and learning?

For teachers, online teaching is a remarkable challenge. A lot of us have never had the experience of delivering lectures online before. We had to spend a great amount of time getting used to the software. Zoom is not easy to use!

Moreover, it’s much more comfortable teaching in front of many students than teaching in front of the computer screen!

I think for students, the experience should be better for them, as they are at the receiving end. They need not cope with the software. Yet, I do also receive some feedback from students on various obstacles. For example, with Zoom occupying the computer screen, it is much more difficult for them to jot notes with a computer. Also, online learning lacks peer interaction and discussion comparing with on-campus learning.

Last but not least, I think it is important to notice the behind-the-scene work by the school, and all faculties throughout this difficult period. Since November, there have been numerous meetings and co-ordinations among the school, faculties, and staff to ensure a smooth transition to online learning. Their collective efforts deserve much appreciation.

The global stock market has been getting very volatile in recent weeks due to the anxiety for a worldwide Coronavirus outbreak. Do you think that could lead us to a bear market?

The Black Monday (9/3) with an unprecedented plummet of over 2000 points in Dow Jones was truly shocking to me. It made me reminiscent of Black Monday in 1987 with a drop of over 20% in Dow Jones, which I guess many students do not know.

I don’t want to be that pessimistic on this issue, but we have technically entered a bear market (a 20% drop from the previous peak) already. Bear in mind that a strong bull market, like what we have been seeing in the past decade, is absolutely not sustainable. What triggered the plunge in the stock market was clearly the concerns for the pandemic and the price war on crude oil, yet I believe there are also many underlying reasons. There have been many unsolved economic and political issues since the 2008 Financial Crisis, from a weak European market to Brexit and Trade War. Provided all these, there was quite probably an overvaluation on the stock market with Dow Jones getting near to 30,000. The plunge we are currently seeing may likely be a correction of the overvaluation.

With that being said, a bear market is always associated with a snowball effect and panic in the market. Therefore, we might be seeing an overreaction, which is a drop much larger than what the correction should have caused.

What advice would you give students to help them prepare for the competitive job market?

Students should bear in mind that what matters is qualitative instead of quantitative. The number of internships, extracurricular activities is much less important than what you have achieved and equipped from these activities.

Students should treasure each internship opportunity to gain experience. Try to learn soft-skills and hard-skills that schools do not teach you and become an all-round person. Examples include the way to deliver good performance and impress your boss, the way to collaborate with your team and your colleagues.

For all the experiences, the most important thing is to do self-reflection. Realize your strengths and weaknesses through them. Capitalize on your strengths and improve your weaknesses, then you can become more competitive.

For university students who don’t have much capital, if they want to invest in the finance market, what advice would you give them?

I would definitely encourage students to invest money into financial markets, as saving and investments are always good and equally important. Yet, I would suggest students invest in index with financial tools like ETFs instead of a particular stock. In this case, you are investing in a wide range of industries. By the theory of risk diversification, this could generate equal returns with lower risks on average. As students with limited capital could probably choose only one or two stocks, it is much better to not put all eggs into one basket.

For Finance students who built their own valuation models, I suggest them test these models with virtual capital instead. This could help them build up their skills gradually without taking a substantial amount of risk.

Do you have any words for the 27th Executive Committee?

I would like to say thank you to all of you who have done a great job throughout the year. The whole committee has been working very hard to provide entertaining and insightful activities for their members and Finance students, amid the challenging situation with many functions canceled. Moreover, I think all of you have been doing well in balancing the time spent on Society work and on studying. It is great that you could still manage your study after devoting so much time to the Society.

INTERVIEW What is the core belief of your company?

Our core belief can be divided into different areas, but we definitely emphasize “limitless”. We like to think out of the box on everything, since we believe this is the way to improvement and innovation.

For business, we value synergy. As my CEO, Jonathan Lo said, we always welcome talented people or institutional investors to cooperate with LW to create blue ocean. For investment, we believe everything could be simple, or putting it in a traditional quote, KISS (Keep It Simple, Stupid). For LW, we have our Triple-Alphas Methodology, which is for multi-asset allocation and we believe that it could ride on all weathers. Based on our track records and experience, our style is quite suitable for pension funds, institutional investors and sophisticated clients.

The true value of one’s life can be measured if the person is able to make a significant difference in someone’s life. We believe that by giving more to the society, we can lead the company to success in the long run.

What is the core competency of your company?

Definitely flexibility. I am not talking about our business skills or how to avoid office political issues. I am talking about how flexible our management mindset can be. In most careers, people complain about their job restraining them to express ideas. However, in LW, we value all the opinions from our staff. We believe that only through constructive discussion can we find out the best solution to solve business problems.

What are fundamental and technical analysis? How can they assist in trading?

Actually both fundamental and technical analysis are foundations in the investment field. Fundamental analysis is like what students are learning in school which focuses more on theory, while technical analysis is a practical tool. From our investing experience, each type of analysis has its own blinded side, which is why we believe that the best solution is to combine them. But the art behind is how we can strike a balance between them.

Putting it this way, fundamental analysis focuses on the longterm view of the market but neglect the effect of market sentiment or fund flow, since no matter how much you believe in a stock, if the fund flow is showing a weakening trend and the market is not aligned with what you are planning for, then you need to give up and exit the market. And this is where technical analysis comes in handy. Say for example you are holding Tesla’s share. You may not be interested if you are only looking at it at the fundamental side, but from the technical side, actually it doesn’t matter about the front law to fund flow or the charts getting stranger since mid-2019. If you are stuck in the blinded side of fundamental analysis, you may go short and get hurt by the trend. Therefore, for investors, it is better to combine both fundamental and technical analysis.

WITH GUEST What is the most popular product/service that your company provides?

Why did you join this company? What are your plans in the coming five years?

We have a multi-strategy fund and run various kinds of discretionary mandates, from institutional clients to high-net-worth clients. In addition, even though individual clients should be able to enjoy professional investment service, that is why we also opened up some standard mandates for retail investors to enjoy.

I started to manage a wide range of portfolios since 2015.

Nonetheless, my dream is to run an asset management company. Then I met my CEO, Jonathan, who gave me a lot of advice and helped me realize my dream. I enjoy being part of the family here and I hope to grow with the company.

Regarding our product or service, our investment mandates are flexible and simple. In fact, we are using ETF (exchange-traded fund) as our foundation so the cost is very reasonable, also it is quite easy for us to pick some bonds or single stock to be the layout for our triple-alphas methodology, which is divided into three stages. In stage I, we identify potential sectors/themes/ regions which could outperform the market. In stage II, we pick ETFs which have higher potential to outperform in within the sectors/themes/regions. In stage III, we overweight stocks from ETFs and apply option-strategies to enhance overall performance.

In five years, I think I would want more than a fund manager, hopefully being a director of the company and helping the LW group grow faster. I would love to see some products in the market named after our company and we are aiming to expand into the Asia Pacific Area.

How can HKUST students get into your company/ the trading industry?

We know that most UST students are well prepared in terms of academics and internship experience. So I have no doubt that UST students can get into the financial industry, but I really want students to be aware of what roles they want. The financial industry is so huge with many different opportunities, don’t only focus on the pride of “big names” or nice titles. There are always ways to generate money in this industry. Just get the role you really enjoy, then eventually you will have enough money. For LW, we value more on those candidates with a high sense of social responsibility and ethical standard. We prefer those candidates with business mindset so that we can grow our family and make it stronger together.

The Finance Students’ Society, HKUSTSU is a non-profit student organization founded in 1992. As the sole student society under the HKUST Department of Finance, we organized activities which aim to connect our members with the Department and increase their interest in finance. We strive to foster a closer bonding between the members of the Society, allow students to acquire knowledge from the business world, as well as providing leisure activities that relieve the academic stress of our members. We try our best to innovate and bring forth societal success. With our long establishment and diverse activities which can cater the needs of different students both academically and leisurely, we are one of the societies which has the closest relationship with our members and this is one of the values we truly stand by.

PROMOTION PERIOD The Promotion Period commenced on the 30th of January, 2019, the first day of the 2019 Spring Semester.

The ultimate goals of having Promotion Period were to let all proposed cabinet members gain experience from organizing events and strengthen team bonding.

As a newly formed cabinet, Finashlar, The Nominated Cabinet of The Finance Students’ Society, HKUSTSU, Session 2019-2020 would also like to introduce our cabinet and gain support from members of The Finance Students’ Society, HKUSTSU as many people in HKUST did not know us yet. Thus, by holding booth games, decorating the booth and distributing souvenirs and refreshments every day, we could meet members of our Society, thank them for their immense support throughout the years as well as to promote our cabinet. Distributing sponsored roasted suckling pigs, bubble tea and lucky draw were some of the highlights of our promotion, successfully attracting hundreds of students to our booth.

In the three weeks of the Promotion Period, we had three different but correlated themes, be it Gold Rush, Royal, and Relics. Decorations were renewed every week to boost the attractiveness of our booth and differentiate ourselves from nominated cabinets of other student societies.

We hope that through the Promotion Period, we could show our members that we were capable of being the Executive Committee of the Society and our passion for serving the Society.

The Promotion Period ended on the 22nd of February, 2019 and was followed by a 2-day Polling Period. Thanks to the support from our members, Finashlar. was declared as The Elected Cabinet of The Finance Students’ Society, HKUSTSU, Session 2019-2020 on the 1st of March.

THE 27TH INAUGURATION CEREMONY Goals Being the first event a new cabinet has to organize, the Inauguration Ceremony is important to mark the commencement of FINA27 as well as showcase our capability.

The Inauguration Ceremony marked the beginning of our journey to serve. Every year, members of the Society get to witness this noteworthy event where the newly inaugurated Executive Committee show their passion and determination to pass on the values of this beautiful community of elites.

The Theme The theme of the 27th Inauguration Ceremony, “Fortes Fortuna Juvat - Fortune Favors The Bold�, denotes fortune will lie on people who are brave and strong. We are motivated to explore new fields and learn from our experiences without the fear of failure. We are prepared to step forward into the unknown and explore the possibilities. Being the first ones to initiate may seem challenging, but we as a whole believe that we are able to undertake any challenges in this year.

The Ceremony A promising start is always important, and it is no different for the new cabinet. The inauguration of a new cabinet did not just give the cabinet members experiences of preparing for large events, but it was a symbol of committment and responsibility. There were so many details to look out for before, during or even after the event, but the fully-packed Citi Lecture Theatre (LT-A) proved it was not only a fresh start for our cabinet, but one of the most memorable events throughout the whole year. 、

The Ceremony was held successfully on 10th April, 2019. We were very honored to have over 400 participants, including distinguished guests from various business sectors and students representatives from 9 tertiary institutions in Hong Kong, to witness the official handover of duty from the 26th to the 27th Executive Committee. The Ceremony was highlighted by the oath-taking ceremony, but it did not just end there, all the participants and guests were able to gain insights and wisdom through the magnificent speeches from our Honorable Guest Speakers, Professor Lynn Pi, the Associate Professor of the Department of Finance in HKUST, Mr. Jonathan Lee, the Head of Financial Institutions, Wells Fargo & Company and Mr. Henry Lee, the Managing Director of Sony Electronics. We were delighted to be able to invite them and even honoured to hear them deliver their insightful speeches.

The 27th Inauguration Ceremony signaled the start for the Elected Cabinet to take on the responsibilities and commit as Executive Committee members of The Finance Students’ Society, HKUSTSU, Session 2019-2020. The Ceremony was served as a bridge to link business professionals with their future counterparts from various universities. It was a platform to exchange thoughts, ideas and even innovations but please do not forget, the Ceremony did not just symbolize the end, but also a new beginning.

ORIENTATION SERIES 2019 Moving on to a new stage might be daunting, which is why the Orientation Series was one of the most valued events in the year. We cordially welcomed the freshmen to join us and find a place which they can belong to, and peers they can rely on. From ice breaking on the Orientation Day to non-stop chatters we see in the Orientation Night, it was especially meaningful for us to see how these events have created bonds among our new members.

REGISTRATION DAYS 24

The Registration Days were probably one of the most remarkable events throughout the year. It was a great opportunity for us to meet freshmen, providing them registration support and promoting them to join our Orientation events. Seeing a lot of innocent and energetic faces on that day reminded us of how we stepped into HKUST with a lot of questions and uncertainties.

In our counter, we prepared gift packs and a brochure about HKUST for the freshers to lighten up their first day of being a part of the HKUST community.

The days were the best harvest as the new faces motivated us to continue serving the Society with our greatest effort.

ORIENTATION DAY

The Orientation Day was the first chance the freshmen got to meet their new friends! We organized the Orientation Day to allow the freshmen to be familiar with us and each other so they would be more comfortable and fully enjoy the Orientation Camp. The day kicked off with ice-breaking events and group formation, then a checkpoint game related to the theme of the Orientation Camp, and wrapped up with campfire dance tutorial. The games and chitchat offered them the chance to know more about their peers and create new memories!

ORIENTATION CAMP The 3-day-2-night Orientation Camp created loads of memories for the freshmen. We strived to offer them the most memorable summer before they entered the University. They had a blast dancing off in the party night on the first day, enjoying performances from a guest band and a DJ. The following day was the most tiring yet most exciting day, hunting down checkpoints all over the city, having a refreshing water war with over 10000 water bombs to cool off, and dancing around a 3 meter high campfire to embrace the summer night. They participated in teams led by senior students and we were thrilled to see them start forming friend groups with their peers and meet seniors that they can rely on before the semester began.

BIG REUNION Big Reunion was the first event for the freshmen after the Orientation Camp. It further consolidated the relationships and friendships of freshmen and their seniors. We gathered at a Chinese restaurant and played games on the stage. It was an amazing opportunity for the freshmen to understand each other more through chatting and having fun with each other in the reunion.

ORIENTATION WEEK To kick off the semester after a long summer break, we welcomed new members and distributed Society products to all of our members. Our Orientation Week was held from the 3rd of September till the 20th of September. This year we were lucky to have 180 new members joining us and we gave out over 300 specially designed Society t-shirts, files, and paper to our members for them to use across the semester. We truly hope that all of you would find these products attractive and useful!

ORIENTATION NIGHT The theme of Orientation Night was School Uniform Party. The aim of O’Night was to let our freshmen pick up memories of their high school life and get together. We divided them into several groups and had mass games and dinner together. They just started their busy university life for a few weeks and we hope they could stay relaxed and maintain relationships with other members of the Society .

MENTORSHIP PROGRAM 2019 The Mentorship Program is one of the highlighted events of the year. Thanks to the overwhelming support provided by the Department of Finance, the feedback we received for the event was exceptionally positive. This year, we aimed to better serve our participants by inviting more young professional members, closing the age gap between our student participants and our respected mentors provided a vibrant atmosphere for exchange of ideas.

“GENTIANA – Nurture with Integrity, Blossom with Dedication” was the theme of the Mentorship Program. GENTIANA, a genus of blue-colored flowering plant belonging to the gentian family, is one of the important medicinal and health-enhancing herb. The delicate and mesmerising Gentiana embodies the diligence in striving through adversity. Gentiana symbolizes the cultivation of a valuable bonding between mentors and mentees as well as an opportunity to learn through experiences and difficulties. Like horticulturists, mentors can act as caretakers to propagate and nurture mentees to blossom like exquisite Gentiana. Throughout the Program, we wish to be a nexus to match between the experienced to the devoted, as well as to unite and commingle ideas and competence to bring societal impacts.

HIGH TABLE DINNER The High Table Dinner was the highlight of the Mentorship Program and our last major event of the session. Not only does it signify a remarkable end of the Program, but also the first occasion for mentees to meet their mentors. Despite all the difficulties we faced while organizing the Dinner, it was successfully held on 21st January, 2020.

Over 180 participants joined us that night at The New World Millennium Hong Kong Hotel in celebrating their success.

We were very honored to have Mr. Henry Ling, Fund Manager of LW Asset Management Advisors Limited, Mr. Chris Woo, Co-founder of Heritor Club and Professor Lynn Pi to give us inspirational speeches. They provided new insights into our career and valuable opinions. We are incredibly grateful to see all our participants enjoying their night, discovering and knowing more about their future industry. We believe our mentees had a lot to take away after a night’s talk and had broadened their horizon.

We truly hope that all our participants had a memorable night with us. Most importantly, we wish that the High Table Dinner was only the beginning of their mentor-mentee relationship and the first of more unforgettable memories.

FINANCE FESTIVAL 2019 The Finance Festival features an array of events in a week: an Opening Ceremony featuring guest stars, a Society Gathering in the form of a singing and dancing contest, a Faculty Gathering allowing professors and students to mingle, and a hotpot gathering as a closure to the week. The whole campus would be decorated with promotion items of our Society, and these events offer precious opportunities for all members to gather and develop a sense of belonging to this family. Sadly due to the unstable social environment, Finance Festival 2019 was canceled. We will be looking forward to the whole campus decorated in blue in the coming year!

INVESTMENT SERIES 2019 We organized various finance-related events with our partners to promote members’ interest in finance and provide opportunities for students to gain hands-on experiences in investment.

The Fourth Joint University Investment Game 2019 The Fourth Joint University Investment Game (JUIG4) is a joint-university event co-organized by I-Access and 20 student societies from various institutions. Our Society has been participating in JUIG for 4 years and it has been one of the distinguished events. Participants were allowed to use real-time data provided by HKEX to play the investment simulation game. This was a precious opportunity for players to experience real-life trading in the financial market. Two of our Executive Committee members were very honored to represent the Society to be the Masters of Closing Ceremony of JUIG4. We were also glad to have over 200 participants subscribing through our Society.

THE THIRD ANNUAL VALUE INVESTING CHALLENGE 2019 The Third Annual Value Investing Challenge was initiated by Chartwell Capital Limited and the Department of Finance and co-organized by our Society. It aims to promote value investing and encourage students to perform fundamental, bottom-up stock pricing investment research in the Asia-Pacific Region. 37 teams were required to value a publicly listed stock, write a research report and finally present the research.

In order to guide students to complete the project, Head of Research and Portfolio Manager of Chartwell, Mr. William Tsang, and Analyst of Chartwell, Mr. Darren Yuen hosted a workshop in the university to share their insights on investment research using their personal career experiences.

I’ve also got the opportunity to apply finance technicals such as intrinsic valuation and cash flow analysis with real life case. The competition was exciting and pushed my limits on equity research and stock pitches. INVESTMENT TALK – PLAN AHEAD OF TIME: SHARING FROM EXPERT IN THE FINANCIAL AND INVESTMENT INDUSTRY It was our honor to have Mr. Colin Tsang, Business Director of P.B. Group to share about the financial planning industry, various financial products and how financial planning firms customize their products for their clients. The host interacted well with the students and introduced the audience to the idea of independent financial advising, which was originated in the UK and not very well-known in Hong Kong.

INVESTMENT TALK – KEEP UP WITH THE GLOBAL TREND: SHARING FROM EXPERT OF CRYPTOCURRENCY We were very glad to have Mr. Wel Suen, Founder of MyEthShop to take Ethereum as an example to share about some basic concepts of cryptocurrency. He shared about the nature of cryptocurrency, the risk of investing in a cryptocurrency, how to ensure asset security, the way to do transactions of cryptocurrency in Hong Kong and make passive income. Many participants were pleased to learn a new type of cryptocurrency besides Bitcoin and they found it very intriguing.

2019-2020 INTRAMURAL SPORTS COMPETITIONS To enrich the university lives of our members and thus enhance their sense of belonging towards our Society, we participated in all six Intramural Sports Competitions, including Aquatic Meet, Athletics Meet, Campus Run, Badminton, Basketball, and Football Competitions. We actively encouraged our members to represent FINA and know more talented members who have the same interests in sports.

Our sportsmen demonstrated good sportsmanship and paid their full effort while representing FINA in the competitions. Unfortunately due to social issues, the ball game competitions remained unfinished, but we are still grateful for the good achievements that our FINA sports teams have come along this year.

CAMPUS RUN Campus Run was held on 26th September 2019, Thursday. 4 female and 3 male sportsmen participated in the competition for FINA. They ran around the campus, with the routes of 3.4 km for boys and 2.4 km for girls. Our representatives received good results in the race, especially girls, ranking 6th, 7th, 9th and 23rd respectively.

ATHLETICS MEET

Athletics Meet was held on 2nd November 2019, Saturday. We invited a total of 7 female and 13 male sportsmen to represent FINA for the competition. We got the 1st runner-up for Men’s Group and 3rd runner-up for Female’s Group. One of our sportsmen, Chan Chun Hei, broke HKUST record and was awarded the Men’s Individual Championship.

AQUATIC MEET Aquatic Meet was held on 29th September 2019, Sunday.

Although we did not take home trophies and medals, our sportsmen showcased their sportsmanship during the swimming races. We were proud of our sportsmen as they represented FINA by paying their full effort and supported each other during competitions.

BADMINTON The group stage of the intramural badminton competition has been completed. The FSS Badminton Team has achieved a great result and has positioned in first place in the group. We have defeated The Chemistry Students’ Society Badminton Team by 3-1 on 16th October 2019 and unfortunately lost to The Biology Students’ Society Badminton Team by 2-3 on 30th October 2019.

FOOTBALL Although there was no formal intramural competition held this semester, multiple friendly games were organized with other society sports teams. Our Football Team has made a great success in holding an unbeaten record this year. Everyone is looking forward to the intramural games in the next academic years.

It is my honor to write on behalf of the Finance Football Team as the Captain of Session 2019-2020. It is hard to believe that it has already been a year. Due to Hong Kong’s situation and the outbreak of COVID-19, we could only have played a number of friendly matches together this year. However, the teamwork that we experienced and the chemistry that we created are way more important than the competition. Sometimes, we take it for granted to play as a team, but we must remember that teammate is the most precious reward to us at the end of the day. We stand up for each other; we are loyal to each other; we protect and support each other through good or bad, because every one of us would also have done the same for each other.

BASKETBALL Only one intramural competition was conducted in this academic year, which was a match against The Economics Students’ Society Basketball Team, and our team played wonderfully by winning a victory of 42-30 on 28th October 2019. We have performed excellently albeit a large proportion of new players in the team. It is believed that the new blood would continue to strive for a prosperous future in the coming years.

“This is the year after we won the first-ever intramural basketball champion in Fall 2019, while most of the champion team members are not here, some graduated, some are in their placement year, so it’s another challenge for us. With some freshmen joining our team, I know it’s time to hand over the responsibility to the new people. Although this year’s knockout match is canceled unfortunately due to the virus, we have won the preliminary match in the fall semester during which the freshmen had done a great job! WELFARE EXPRESS 2019 In order to promote the Society and unite our members, the Executive Committee has organized the Welfare Express in the Spring Semester 2020.

Due to the outbreak of the coronavirus, the university had announced that on-campus learning would not be required in the 2020 Spring Semester, and the regular counter was waived. The Welfare Express was held online this year instead. During the 7-day Pre-order Period in early February, members ordered their laptop sleeves and customized hoodies online. The products were delivered to them through express in March. We are truly grateful for those who supported our products and we hope all of you enjoy using them!

“A round of applause must be given to The Finance Students’ Society (2019-2020). As a freshman, FINA has been doing fantastic work on guiding me in UST. I bet every freshman feels clueless, helpless when stepping into university, I still remember how panic I was on the registration day.

After getting off the 11M minibus, the first person I saw was The Finance Students’ Society’s Executive Committee member welcoming me to HKUST. I wasn’t expecting such a warm welcome on my first day on campus but that is exactly what FINA gave me. Obviously, I joined their Orientation Camp in August and many other events afterward, such as the Finance Festival and the Mentorship Program: Gentiana. Throughout this series of events, I have met my first group of friends in HKUST. Starting from O’camp to the Mentorship Programme, FINA has given me uncountable precious and unforgettable memories. Honestly, I wasn’t expecting myself to have such a fruitful first year.

MEMBERS’ WORDS “First and foremost, I must thank myself for choosing to kick-start my u-life with FINA O’camp. Onboarding to the Voyage of Finance (O’Camp in 2018) may be a coincidence, but choosing to stay behind with FINA is definitely not.

People say it is hard to find true friends in university, but I am proud to say that I have found a group of unpretentious, considerate and cute friends here in FINA, whom I wish to spend time and effort with for a life-long relationship. I could never imagine how would my u-life be if I didn’t choose to join FINA Ocamp. All those frustrating days in freshman year – struggling on course registration, looking for lunch buddies in lesson gap, or even feeling lost in career and life planning, I am glad that I have met these lovely people in FINA who walked the hard time through with me.

The merits also go to the committee members of The Finance Students’ Society who have spent countless sleepless nights preparing different functions and gatherings. Some could never understand why they are sacrificing so much for FINA without asking for pay. Maybe the only reason that could explain is that they wish to pass on the touching moments they got in FINA to all other freshmen who are as enthusiastic for u-life as we were a few years back then.”

“A few days ago, I just submitted my graduation application to ARRO. As I clicked the "confirm" button, I sighed, sat back, reminiscing how my university years just flew by in a blink of an eye. I am grateful that the young Sharon took up the courage to pledge to be part of the Executive Committee and to take up the role of the Chairperson. It was a big leap forward, to a sea of unknowns, to a better me, to lessons to learn from. It was a journey of mistakes after mistakes, but also a rewarding story that I tell others “this is what I’m most proud of in my university life.”

Back in summer 2019, I had my 4th FINA O’Camp. I feel like proud parents to see the family grew (almost exponentially).

The FINA orientation camp was where I met some of my best friends in university — maybe that’s the reason why I felt such a strong connection to the Society — I wish I could pass on the joy I’ve experienced. We made the promise to all freshmen on Day 1 that here in FINA, we can help them build long-term and meaningful friendships, instead of knowing a bunch of hi-bye friends, and we kept our promises every year. “This year was filled with ups and downs and it was such an honor to be able to work with such an amazing team. Throughout the past year, I’ve grown from a young freshman into a sophomore who had his first glimpse into society and is eager to learn more.

The experiences this year have allowed me to broaden my horizons and see what the world has to offer. I had the opportunity to work with a number of business professionals throughout my session and am extremely grateful to be able to learn from them. It was the experiences and interactions with all the seasoned professionals that gave me such an unforgettable experience in the past year.

Having this session to work with my fellow cabinet members was also a large growth factor for me as they are a group of incredibly talented individuals who wanted to dedicate their time to serving our members. We all had our own strengths, but it took time for us to turn from a group of individually-minded people into a well-functioned team. At the start of our session, we were not used to having each other as support and made mistakes here and there. We were all trying to find our place in the cabinet and perform our roles to make sure our events go smoothly. There were times where we were burnt out and had our own temper, but we cared for each other and resolved the tension.

Through all the time we put in working together, we were able to conquer the uncertainties and adapt to the unstable environment in the past year. Working with such a big team and all these different personalities was not easy and I would like to thank my cabinet members for enduring some of my undesirable qualities and cared for me through the times I was down and worn out. I remembered the times when we just had our Inauguration Ceremony and an accident occurred which made the event delay for half an hour. It was devastating to me as one of the PICs, and my cabinet members were there for me and made me able to continue with the event. I am forever grateful for what they all did this year and showed me how everybody has their own strengths and having them by my side for the year was one of the best things that happened to my university life.

With all that said I would proudly say we have a challenging yet fruitful year behind us and I hope we have passed on our values and thoughts to our successors. Lastly, I would also like to thank all the parties who helped us move through this year in a flourishing manner.”

In fact, the reason for me to become an exco is that I would like to try something new when I am still green and young, and I also believed it would be a remarkable experience in my university life. I think being an Internal Vice-Chairperson would be challenging as I have to maintain good relationships with other societies and keep track of the standard of our events at the same time. The time was tough. There were many times that we did not sleep and directly went to a lecture after a long night of work. However, I am grateful that other exco members always stand by me and we could go through the tough times together. They are probably the best gift of my journey.�

Daniel Cheung External Vice-Chairperson “This year has been quite an exciting ride for me. Most of my friends from my secondary school said that I have changed to another person completely. Nonetheless, 2019 to me was definitely one of the most amazing years I have ever experienced. And most importantly, it is my Executive Committee members who are accompanying me the whole way, through adversity and joyful times. I would like to thank them for their countless support throughout the year and I want them to know that they are not only my closest friends but also part of my family.

Being an Executive Committee member was never an easy task, but it has admittedly forced me to become a responsible adult. I can still remember the difficult times during the preparation period of The 27th Inauguration Ceremony. Being one of the PICs, my members and I had a tough time preparing for the event. Though the result turns out not to be the best, it is the days and nights that we have spent together that matter the most.

Seeing the successful impact of our events on helping our members is one of the most rewarding experiences during the year, especially for the Mentorship Program 2019. I hope everyone would have found the program meaningful, not only for their own interest, but also for giving back to the society in the future.

This year has passed in the blink of an eye. It is time for me to pass the torch to my fellow Executive Ccommittee members to carry on the duty. Amy Lo Internal Secretary “Looking at the freshmen joining this place, liking this place, sticking with this place, I know it’s all worth it. Of course, there were highs and lows: starting off super passionate and energetic in ProP; feeling sorry that I couldn’t meet expectations; questioning the purpose of it all as I couldn’t see the possibility for all of us to have aligned expectations; and finally feeling touched when I hear even the tiniest compliment recognizing our efforts and message we are trying to pass on. There were lots of regrets and frustrating moments, especially with this chaotic year, but I’m still happy I made this stupid decision one year ago.

To be very honest, everything did not go the same way I expected it to, but I did achieve certain things I told myself I want to achieve, and there were so many more takeaways than I had anticipated. I will forever remember the endless decorations, water bombs and all the time we spent together working towards something we care about together.

Countless sleepless nights, the embarrassing tears and laughter, stupid inside jokes all highlighted my year. Special props to all my jongyuens going through all of this with me, and being my only friends in HKUST. Thanks to everyone who made me join this place, like this place, and stick with this place since I first came. :D”

Vianne Tsoi External Secretary “Life is a blank canvas, and I chose to paint blue on it.

In the blink of an eye, it has been a year since I stepped on the stage with my cabinet members and took the oath to serve as an Executive Committee of The Finance Students’ Society. Taking up the responsibility as a blank canvas is never easy. The year of 2019 was full of sweats, tears and most importantly laughters.

Having an amazing team to embark on the journey with me has definitely added a splash of color onto the blank canvas. With different personalities but one common goal, the 15 colors blended together into the most enchanting color ever- friendship.

In the past year, we have used the color to create many everlasting masterpieces. Let me share the most remarkable function - the Mentorship Program 2019 as an External Secretary with you guys. In three months, we had to organize a series of events ranging from workshops to the High Table Dinner with nearly 200 business professionals and our members participate in it. This opportunity has managed to nourish relationships between mentors and mentees. A freshman has reflected that he keeps a close relationship with his mentor and his mentor became his life coach. Can you imagine how heartening this is to an organizer?

I am forever grateful for all that had happened this year. I believe that with the blue spirit in our hearts, we can live the motto of ‘Stay Humble, Hustle Hard’.”

Ken Lam Financial Secretary “ ‘With great power, comes great responsibilities.’

Hopefully writing this Exco reflection is the last task that I have to complete before the end of this session.

As the Financial Secretary, I only had 2 PIC (person-in-charge) functions throughout the year, which were the Sub-committee Recruitment and Information Session. Despite the fact that I have a relatively low workload than other committee members may have, I am still proud of being a part of ‘FINA27’. We collectively organized few annual events like Inauguration Ceremony, Orientation Camp as well as Mentorship Program having hundreds of participants this year. Moreover, what makes me prouder is that we do accomplish the goals we set before we were elected. Thanks for the support from our members, we have a steady increase regarding the number of participants of the functions we held.

I enjoy every moment and anytime that I spend with my ‘Jorng Yuen’. They are not my friends, but more than that, my family that I could rely on. Although our identities in the Society will be changed from the Executive Members to the normal members when we ‘Lok Jorng’, our relationship will never be changed by anyone, anytime and anywhere. Winky Fung Marketing Secretary “Time flies but it is up to us to be the NAVIGATOR and create our own paths. A year ago, I was struggling whether to take up the responsibility of an exco as I was scared of completing the tasks and disappointing my fellow members. There were doubts during the year and times that I got lost.

However, all of these came to an end when I was in the Orientation Camp, in the circle of the campfire, seeing everyone enjoying themselves and making the most of their youth. I firmly believe that everything I have done was worth it. As the year of office for FINA27 is coming to an end, I would say joining this big family was one of the best decisions that I have made.

There were ups and downs throughout the year being an executive committee member. This year was an unusual year as we faced more challenges when making decisions and holding events.

Sometimes, we might complain about the stress that we were under and the extra workload we faced. However, they are still good memories as we became better in facing adversities and bonded together while we braved whatever challenges we had.

FINA27 is a period full of joy and regrets, but the greatest takeaway from this year is the valuable relationship with my committee members, especially the nights we spent working together. I feel incredibly grateful to have all my committee members, working together towards the same goal – to make everything perfect. They are not just my colleagues, but the ones who had my back no matter what. We experienced the first year of our university life together, accompanying each other at all times.

I would like to thank all my other Executive Committee members. Here comes an end to our year of FINA27, but not the end of our journey or our friendship. The memories that we created in FINA27 will always stay with me.”

Desmond Yau Marketing Secretary “ ‘Never give up. Today is hard, tomorrow will be worse, but the day after tomorrow will be sunshine’ Jack Ma This year was full of obstacles and hurdles and it has not been easy for everyone. It might be even more challenging to be a part of the Executive Committee, but I would always name it as one of the best decisions I have ever made in my life.

Recalling the memories, I remembered a lot of sweat and tears within the journey but there were no regrets. There might be sacrifices such as my academic results and free time meeting external parties and seeking for sponsors, but those are all valuable experiences that helped me to grow to who I am now. Seeking for sponsors especially might be tedious and uneventful due to the low success rate but the sense of achievement when I succeeded made all the efforts paid worth it. One thing I learned as a Marketing Secretary this year would be marketing is not just about communicating with external parties or sponsors, marketing could be packaging the Society, the Cabinet and most importantly, ourselves to the outside world to show how capable we really are.

I would also like to deliver my thanks to Finashlar, they are the family that supported me and provided me a glimpse of light when I needed help the most. We might be stones or ‘ashlars’ of different sizes and shapes, but The Finance Students’ Society provided us the frame for us to fit in and it resulted in a perfect match. We had conflicts and arguments, but we never collapse or falter. We supported one and other like a family and provided a bridge made up of ashlars to link members and the department and exterior parties.

Last but not least, I would like to thank The Finance Students’ Society. The Society provided me a place to create unforgettable memories and even a shelter when I needed help. I hope I had done enough to pass on the spirit and provide the same to all the members. I wish the upcoming session a joyful and fruitful year ahead and hope you all could enjoy it like one of the highlights of your life.”

Winnie Ng Public-Relations Secretary and Current Business Affairs Secretary “Being an Executive Committee member, I have got a lot of opportunities to broaden my horizons and make breakthroughs. These were the reasons why I chose to be an Executive Committee member last year; however, I am now very glad to say that my cabinet members are the biggest reward I have got.

I have encountered a lot of challenges with my cabinet members. We had been unsatisfied with each other’s working style while we came up with a better working style under communication. We had failed to have a good division of labor, but we reflected and improved together. We had met a lot of contingencies due to mistakes, but we solved them collaboratively. We have gone through ups and downs which have strengthened our bonding.

It is my pleasure to be part of Finashlar, where my cabinet members are considerate, passionate and fun to work with. Besides my cabinet members, I would also like to thank all guests, The Department, members and past Executive Committees for supporting us throughout our journey.”

Kelley Wong Promotion Secretary “It has been a year since we vowed; taking up the obligation of an Executive Committee member brought me lassitude, yet exuberance. We came across unanticipated challenges, where we coped with it, learned from it and walked through our journey step by step.

We have spent plenty of nights working together, hands and clothes full of tapes and marker stains.

Despite the fatigue everyone had, we stood by one another making the dark and gloomy room replete with laughter, and persisted with our work till sunrise.

It was definitely a tough year but also a year urging me to grow; it witnessed me maturing from a shy innocent girl to who I am now. Meanwhile, comments and praises from participants have become my prime motivation to improve and excel.

Thank you past excos for paving the way for us and strengthening our bonding; members were always so supportive to our Society throughout the years. And now, I hope our aspiration and spirit can pass on to Finavior, The Finance Students’ Society, HKUSTSU, Session 2020-2021.”

Eunice Yuen Promotion Secretary “My journey started from joining FINA Orientation Camp in 2018, where I met a bunch of nice and friendly people. They were the ones who made me interested to further discover more about the Society, encouraged and led me to where I am now. Realizing my identity as an Exco did take some time. It was not only a process of developing myself but also, more importantly, a process of learning to try my best to contribute to the Society.

Being a Promotion Secretary was quite challenging in terms of time management and there were times that I was overwhelmed. However, I was lucky to be accompanied by my partners and fellow cabinet members who were supportive at all times. Looking back, it is so fascinating to see how relationships grow from our slightly awkward first gathering :p Through working days and nights together, we not only got along well but also developed strong bonds among us. I would want to thank you all for taking care of me, as well as bearing with my “slowness” and mistakes. This year of being an exco of FINA brought me a lot of precious moments and life-long friends. I am sure that these will be the most important memories of my university life. I am glad that I have made the right decision of being a part of Finashlar! Calvin Ngai Welfare Secretary and Academic Secretary â&#x20AC;&#x153;Looking back, it has been a tough, yet memorable and wonderful year. When I first entered the university as a freshman, I was shy and passive. Yet, this inclusive Society provided me with friends and a feeling of a warm family, giving rise to the idea that I also wanted to be part of it.

At the sleepless nights of the preparation of the Promotion Period, I was fed up with the tedious and exhausting work. Yet, the dogged and contagious determination of my fellow Executive Committee members encouraged me and allowed me to persevere.

Throughout the functions of the year, there have been many ups and downs, joys and tears. These experiences not only brought me precious memories and life-long friends, but also helped me to grow into a more mature person. In the end, I am proud to say that I never regret the time and commitment here.

I feel truly grateful when I am writing this reflection. Thank you to all of my fellow Executive Committee members for completing this arduous yet amazing journey with me. Inin Tsui Publication Secretary and Information Technology Secretary “Seriously speaking, being a Publication Secretary and Information Technology Secretary of FSS is quite a breakthrough for me. I started off with no publication experience and am no expert in any computer software. Taking up two roles that I am not familiar with is definitely not an easy job. For numerous nights burning the midnight oil to create (hopefully) informative content, double-checking and proofreading did make me question myself if all this is worth the work. Let me tell you, yes! It’s a definite yes!

Amid the paperwork, I am grateful for being backed up by my cabinet members, especially our promotion team, who turned my words into amazingly arranged booklets and leaflets. Thank you for walking through this tough and baffling year with me. FINA27 is always so supportive to each other (and being mean sometimes), that a simple pat on the shoulder or a hug is enough to motivate me to work again. Bearing the same goals in mind, we might have opinions to make things better, but we never fight, we never let emotions overwhelm us. That makes us not only close friends but also a family, whom I can rely on and stick to all the time.

The year has been a hell of a ride for Finashlar. Looking back, all the challenges and difficulties throughout the year brought us closer. I never regretted to kick start my university life by joining FINA O’camp a year ago. I am proud to be a part of Finashlar, FINA27, and a member of the FSS community. Our term of service may come to an end, but the bond within ourselves is just starting to get stronger and stronger. Hereby I wish every member of the 28th Cabinet, Finavior to embrace the coming year, creating more fruitful memories for yourselves. I am sure it will be a rewarding and meaningful journey.”

Queenie Chan Sports and Recreational Secretary “Time flies. The journey of being an Executive Committee member of The Finance Students’ Society, HKUSTSU is almost over. I am still grateful that I decided to join FINA O’Camp in my freshman year. This was how I joined the FINA family and sowed the seeds for me to become an Executive Committee. Once I decided to become an Executive Committee member, I said to myself that I could never give up no matter what happens. I am proud of myself that I kept my promise one year ago, although the experience was tough and challenging.

I am thankful to the past Executive Committees because we could not organize our events successfully and smoothly without their tremendous support and advice. Thank you for allowing Finashlar to serve the members and grow at the same time. As a Sports and Recreational Secretary, I could not be more thankful to all the FINA Sportsmen. I am always proud of you all who helped FINA get good results in Intramural Sports Competition and make FINA Sports Team better and stronger.

And most importantly, Finashlar. For real, Finashlar is the best thing that has happened in my university life, I am glad that I have a group of friends doing something great together. We all have different personalities, yet that is how we can complement each other and work out for the best. I believe that our friendship and close bond will last for a lifetime. This one-year journey with you all will remain memorable and precious to me after years.

Matthew Tai Sports and Recreational Secretary “Being an Executive Committee member of The Finance Students’ Society has been a new challenge for me as I have never taken up any leadership position before. I would like to show my deepest thanks to people who have worked with me throughout the whole year, including my cabinet members, my partners, freshmen from my own group, sportsmen that have actively participate in various events, and all members in the Society, for their kindness and enthusiasm for tolerating my laziness and incompleteness.

Without the aid of other cabinet members, I wouldn’t have gone so far and made it to the end. Although there were arguments and hardships during the year, it was the memories between us that hold our friendship together. With all the things we have gone through, I believe that the bonding between every one of us would never be forgotten. Our friendship does not finish when our term of service ends, nor when we graduate from the university, we will keep on supporting each other in our whole lifetime.

PASSING ON THE LEGACY Finavior, The Elected Cabinet of The Finance Students’ Society, HKUSTSU, Session 2020-2021 Finavior stands Ardor, Variety, Inspiration, Obligation, Radiance. These five words sums up what we hope to bring to The Finance Students’ Society in Session 2020-2021. This is an acrostic, in which the first letter of each word in our theme forms the word AVIOR, a star that plays a significant role in naming our cabinet.

Our cabinet is named after Avior, which is one of the brightest stars in the night sky that helped with navigation in World War II. With the diverse array of talents and personalities in the cabinet, our passionate candidates work in harmony to provide guidance and empowerment to our members and our community. We wish to bring knowledge, connections and memories for members to fully utilize their time with us during the coming year, so they can shine with brilliance like Avior.

We look forward to serving members of FSS. By keeping these words in mind - Ardor, Variety, Inspiration, Obligation, Radiance, we will stay true to our roots and encourage one another to push the boundaries of our limits and achieve more.
