Lakeland honors Pittsburgh shooting victims Jillian Kurtz and Reems Landreth Copy Editor, Online Editor A message of light and love united the Lakeland community on Oct. 28 during a service of unity and remembrance at Temple Emanuel. The service was in response to the deaths of 11 at Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh, PA. on Saturday, Oct. 27. According to The New York Times, this event has been described as one of the deadliest attacks against the Jewish community in the United States. Florida Southern freshmen Gabby Araguiz and Melina Ramirez attended the event after being notified by an email sent out to all students from President Anne Kerr at 4:15 p.m. “I just feel a really strong connection to my community and we prayed here [Temple Emanuel] about a month ago for the high holidays,” Ramirez said. Araguiz stated that her former rabbi used to attend Tree of Life synagogue. “I feel like you need to show that you care and this matters and this shouldn’t be

happening,” Araguiz said. Dr. Catherine Eskin, advisor for FSC Hillel, was in attendance. “It isn’t about faith,” Eskin said. “Generally when this kind of thing happens, it doesn’t have to do with whether you believe in God, it has to do with whether you love other human beings.” Temple Emanuel Rabbi David Goldstein spoke to reporters before the service that he was disheartened but not surprised that an incident like this occured. Polk County Sheriff, Grady Judd, spoke during the service addressing the Jewish community saying, “You are not alone. We will do everything possible to protect you. You already know that we love you.” He went on to say that his officers will do whatever it takes to protect citizens of Polk County and bring swift justice to anyone who opposes any freedoms. “Personally I never thought that safety in a temple would ever be an issue because that is a spiritual and safe zone,” FSC Hillel President Andrew Gapinski said. “We shouldn’t have to hide from the world to practice our religion.”

Brits march to stay in European Union

“Bollocks to Brexit,” “It’s not too late,” badges say Hannah Kiester News Editor

In June of 2016, the United Kingdom voted to leave the European Union, resulting in what was coined “Brexit,” but now the move is no longer guaranteed. “No deal is better than a bad deal,” Prime Minister Teresa May said of negotiations with the EU on leaving Brexit, but the prolonged debates have caused citizens to become more nervous. May acknowledged repeatedly that while she is working to avoid a bad deal for the EU, making a deal would be a much better scenario than if the UK cannot make a deal with the EU.

The UK was almost evenly divided on whether they were “for” or “against” Brexit in the original vote in 2016. The winning vote to leave the EU was 51.9% of the votes, while 48.1% were against Brexit. Since then, Prime Minister Teresa May has been in negotiations with the EU as to the terms of the UK’s departure. In order for any country to leave the EU, they must participate in a two-year period of negotiations with the EU in order to decide the terms of their departure. Because the EU is a trade agreement that allows goods and services to move more freely between the participating countries, the UK must now negotiate an entirely new trade deal with them in order to participate

in trade across most of Europe. At the moment, two of the biggest points of debate are how to handle the money that the UK owes the EU and how to establish the Northern Ireland border. Another large issue to members of parliament (MPs) is what will happen to the citizens of both the UK and the EU that reside in countries they are not citizens of. While the UK was part of the EU, many citizens from other EU-participating countries were able to live and work in the UK with relative ease because they were all under the EU.
