E D I TOR’S NOT E FRV Bali – IT TAKES YOU PLACES

Summer time and the feeling’s easy. The dry season has well and truly kicked in and we are looking at another high season, bigger than ever before, on the island of Bali. It is a great time of year to be here and all you lucky souls reading this right here on the island should feel grateful to be part of it. If you’re not here, tickets are readily available, online or from your agent. This year is already very busy on the island with more foreign and domestic tourists than every arriving to our shores. While the roads are being filled with oversized busses full of bucket-shop tourists staying in two or three stars hotels, there still is a large number of higher end visitors too. Bali, in the over 37 years I have known it personally, has always managed to contain all sorts of people and walks of life with relative ease. It has always been a cosmopolitan part of the

world, where people from all nations are on holidays or live here permanently. You can hear just about every language of the world spoken here just walking down the street. It’s a place where people learn to live together mixed harmoniously with the influences of the local culture. There aren’t many places like it. The latest influx of northern Asian tourists is definitely having an impact on the demographic picture of tourism here, but I’m sure it’s an impact that Bali will manage to contain as it has done for the past century. And I’m sure also these new tourists will learn a thing or two on their stay and take those influences back home with them possibly creating a better, more understanding world for it.

Inside this edition, FRV Bali is once again featuring more outstanding articles on dining, accommodation, fashion and travel. We visit two new restaurants in Petitenget, one a casual topnotch dining and drinking establishment, KILN and the other on the beach at Alila Seminyak, Seasalt. Both are exciting new venues. We re-check five of the best luxury villas, and take a look at new pampering options in trendy Canggu. New scribe Duncan Murry Kirk, better know as Muz, takes a look at the sustainablity of Bali. There’s plenty of fashion and also an impressive line-up of getaway travel stories this edition from West Australia, USA, Maldives and even just around the corner, East Bali. We hope you will enjoy reading through this edition of FRV Bali magazine. If you have any comments please direct them to editor@ frvbali.com

Bits & Pieces WHAT’S NEW AT EL KABRON El Kabron restaurant and cliff club overlooking Bingin beach down Uluwatu way has been going from strength to strength over the past years and has now reached a standard to which few can come close. Right from the front entrance guests are made to feel special and treated with the utmost attention, and this flows through to every level of the Spanish restaurant experience. They have been busy recently upgrading the facilities including a new swimming pool, a second story terrace for diners and tiered seating around the pool area so everyone gets a great view of the magnificent sunsets for which El Kabron is so famous. I was told by GM Paolo that they also have

JI TERRACE BY THE SEA

Ji Terrace by the Sea takes you on a journey to the heart of Indonesia, Japan, India, and Thailand with contemporary and playful Japanese & Asian inspired dishes and a 180 degrees undisturbed view over the sparkling Indian Ocean and Canggu Beach. The food served at Ji Terrace by the Sea is going to be a modern interpretation of ancient Asian cultures. Whereas the

14

already existing JI at Bale Sutra 1706 celebrates classical Japanese cuisine with fusion from other Asian cultures, they detour from this route at JI Terrace by the Sea. Their team of Japanese & Asian-trained chefs, led by Chef Colin Buchan (previously chef of Gordon Ramsay restaurants in London as well as Jason Atherton’s Pollen in Singapore), had fun experimenting with creating dishes that are global, contemporary

and playful. The cocktails take a similar inspiration as the food – with Asian infusions of their premium spirits, the cocktails at Ji Terrace by the Sea are 200% seductive in flavours as well as presentation. On the 2nd and 3rd floor, as the DJ plays seductive tunes from sunset to evening, Ji Terrace by the Sea celebrates Bali beach life to the fullest! www.tuguhotels.com
