Student Artists have their

MOMENT in theSUN

April 15 - June 19, in the Art Museum

Please join us for the opening reception of our spring exhibits on Friday, April 15th from 6-8PM

This spring, Fruitlands will host our second Student Art Competition. Middle school and high school students from across the region were invited to submit drawings, paintings, photography and sculpture that represent the art, nature and history of Fruitlands. Our first student art show two years ago attracted almost 80 entries from 16 communities. This year the competition will be judged by our 2016 Artist-inResidence Carolyn Wirth. Cash prizes will be awarded to the top artists in both the middle school and high school categories.

2014 student artist, Katelyn Mumford.

The

NATURAL WORLD

April 15–June 19, in the Art Museum Fruitlands is pleased to feature the work of Master Carver, William J. Schnute and an exhibit of his high relief wood carvings. Schnute, who works out of Oak Leaves Studio in Wilton, NH, has been carving wood since he was seven years old. Much of Schunte’s work pays homage to the natural world, capturing plants and animals in realistic form and dynamic scenes, which are carved from single blocks of wood. His carvings are often used on large doors and architectural panels for private residences, corporate structures and churches nationwide and have been featured in Architectural Digest. Carving such intricate scenes starts with a very cerebral process of planning out the project; deciding on a theme, choosing a type of wood, figuring out how to assemble the raw materials,

in

High Relief

and mentally organizing the layout of the piece. Once this process is complete, he will start sketching the patterns which guides the assembly and carving process. Numerous blocks of wood are glued together in layers to form a rough shape, sometimes weighing hundreds of pounds, from which the final sculptural forms will emerge. Using both modern pneumatic rotary hand tools and traditional wood gouges, shapes of animals and plants slowly emerge. The scenes are typically finished with traditional hand tools, some custom made to suit a specific purpose. The form and structure of the final carving achieves a balance between the wood grain and the artist’s hand to capture the beauty of the natural world. M A 014 51 . f r u i t l a n d s .o r g

Fruitlands Newsletter

From the Director’s Desk Getting ready for the main season is always an exciting time and this year that was especially true. I want to personally thank everyone who made our year end appeal a success and especially the members of our Benefactors Circle whose giving helps ensure the very content of this newsletter, the exhibitions and programs that are at the heart of what we do. We are thrilled to once again showcase the work of student artists in New England, and the educators who nurture that talent, as our premier Spring Exhibition. Alongside these talented emerging artists we are featuring a master wood-carver whose work is, in many ways, an indoor version of our popular Art in Nature exhibition. In addition to great exhibitions, and our 2016 Artistin-Residence, you will notice some exciting new programs that are drawn from our strategic planning process which finished in 2015 and brought forth a new vision for Fruitlands: Fruitlands will be known as a majestic gathering place that builds connections between nature, people and culture. Recognized nationally and loved locally for its engaging exhibitions and programs, the museum will serve as a catalyst for creativity and the development of curious minds for audiences of all ages. Fruitlands will be a welcoming oasis at the center of a community that will gather to learn, celebrate, and renew.

End of Year Appeal a Success!

THANK YOU to everyone who contributed to the end of year Giving Challenges. Our first giving challenge – to reach 80 donors – resulted in a gift of $10,000. The second challenge matched gifts up to $5,000 and we exceeded that goal raising over $42,000 in all!

One of the new initiatives for this year is a series of wellness programs that connect to the “renew” at the end our vision. We’ve long understood that part of the magic of the Fruitlands experience is how it makes you feel and our environmental education initiative, launched in 2014, invited visitors to unplug and get connected to nature. Now we are offering you a place to explore your mental and creative energies and to find your best self in a setting committed to education and inspiration. Recently, we shared some exciting news about our plans to integrate with the Trustees of Reservations. The boards of both organizations voted to approve the integration that would make Fruitlands Museum a part of The Trustees, a statewide organization, founded in 1891 to save and share places of exceptional natural, cultural, and ecological significance. The two organizations will begin an operational integration over the coming year, which should be complete by 2017. To learn more about The Trustees visit www.trustees. org. As a member, your support remains critical to Fruitlands success and we promise to keep you in the loop as we continue to grow and thrive. Spring is a season of new beginnings and we are ready to bloom! We look forward to seeing you soon.

Wyona Lynch-McWhite, Executive Director

We are thrilled and honored by the support shown to Fruitlands Museum this year! The Benefactors Circle is a new membership program that will honor and celebrate donors who give $1,000 or more each year. This group of insightful donors will help chart the course for our future and celebrate the ideals behind our mission. Benefactors Circle members enjoy all the benefits of membership plus: Benefactor Circle members got a Behind-the-Scenes tour of Fruitlands off-site storage in March.

Julie Zickefoose N E

W S

Why and how do baby songbirds develop so quickly, some launching into flight only 11 days after hatching? In 2002, Julie Zickefoose began to draw and paint wild nestlings day by day, bearing witness to their swift growth. Over the next 13 years, Julie would document the daily changes in 17 bird species from hatching to fledging. Baby Birds is the enchanting result, with more than 400 life studies that hop, crawl and flutter through its pages. In this talk, Julie shares her influences as well as her artistic process, a mustsee for the aspiring natural history artist. Art and science blend in every Zickefoose pursuit, as the scientist’s relentless curiosity joins the artist’s quest for beauty. The work, wonder and fun of studying nestlings, including being foster mother to orphaned hummingbirds, chimney swifts and bluebirds, makes for an irresistible and highly inspirational presentation. Copies of Baby Birds will be available for purchase and a book signing will follow the presentation. Space is limited. Registration required.

Closer to the Ground is the deeply personal story of a father learning to share his love of nature with his children, not through the indoor lens of words or pictures, but directly, palpably, by exploring the natural world as they forage, cook and eat from the woods and sea. This compelling, masterfully written tale follows Dylan Tomine and his family through four seasons as they hunt chanterelles, fish for salmon, dig clams and gather at the kitchen table to enjoy the fruits of their labor. Closer to the Ground captures the beauty and surprise of the natural world—and the ways it teaches us how to live—with humor, gratitude and a nose for adventure as keen as a child’s. Join us for a thoughtful discussion and refreshments and check fruitlands.org/calendar/events for more Book Group meetings in the coming months.

Sculptor Tapped as 2016 Artist-in-Residence Welcome and congratulations to the 2016 Artist-in-Residence, sculptor Carolyn Wirth. Wirth sees the cultural objects in Fruitlands’ many collections as time travelers from the American past that bring a complicated message to the present. According to Wirth her process is one of layering materials and meaning as both a temporal and sculptural exercise. “I mostly sculpt the human face and body, aiming for a kind of poetic realism. Through the exploration of materials she is able to visualize women associated with Fruitlands’ remarkable spaces, like Mother Ann Lee and Louisa May Alcott. During the course of her residency, Wirth will bring to Fruitlands a group of imaginary portraits—creating idiosyncratic and personal sculptural works. She will also be offering art classes and workshops, and working on campus so visitors can stop by to watch her process and ask questions.
