National Basketry Organization Exhibit Comes to Fruitlands September 19–November 22

All Things Considered VIII is a juried and invitational

exhibition organized by the National Basketry Organization–a biannual show featuring some of the best work being produced in traditional and sculptural basketry today. Master Basket-maker, JoAnn Kelly Catsos and American Craft Council Director of Education, Perry Price brought their years of experience and passion for basketry to co-curate the exhibit, selecting 70 baskets out of 281 entries from all across the country. Visitors to the museum are in for a real treat. The range in styles, techniques and materials represented in this show is exceptional and inspiring. From traditional ash splint baskets expertly executed, whimsical forms based on mathematical formulas, woven copper and mixed materials, this exhibition has an amazing assortment of colorful forms.

Fruitlands Newsletter

From the Director’s Desk

It’s Fall at Fruitlands Fall is a time of harvest and abundance, no matter where you live. The seeds of things that have been planted and carefully sown have transformed and are ready to be cultivated. Harvard is surrounded by this abundance, certainly in the agricultural sense, but this is also true in the organizational sense. I am pleased to share that as we move into the fall we do so having just completed a new strategic plan with a fresh new vision and we are excited about the plans we are working on for the museum’s future. Getting to this point has been a careful and deliberative process and the “seeds” were planted almost two years ago when we started this planning journey. Along the way we “watered” these planning seeds by conducting visitor surveys, doing benchmarking research, and organizing work groups at both the board and staff level. The result of these efforts - our harvest - is a plan and a vision that speaks to a museum that is welcoming, relevant, and engaging.

Fruitlands will be known as a majestic gathering place that builds connections between nature, people and culture. Recognized nationally and loved locally for its engaging exhibitions and programs, the museum will serve as a catalyst for creativity and the development of curious minds for audiences of all ages. Fruitlands will be a welcoming oasis at the center of a community of learners that will gather to learn, celebrate and renew.

Our programs this season are also abundant with great scheduled and drop in offerings for families and adults to enjoy. New programs have been developed as a result of our planning journey and in response to member’s feedback. We are thankful to our new corporate members and sponsors whose support helps makes our exhibitions and programs possible. New exhibitions, the craft festival, gallery tours, trail walks, artists demonstrations and art classes are overflowing the pages of this newsletter and all are offered at reduced or no cost to our members. We look forward to seeing you soon to enjoy the best of the season and the fruits of the Harvest. Wyona Lynch-McWhite Executive Director

The museum had two curatorial interns during the Summer of 2015, Trevor Lamb from the University of Maine and Alex Holmes from Becker College. Both worked directly with Chief Curator Mike Volmar, but on very different projects. Trevor focused primarily on collections management and demonstrated his expertise in historic material culture developing interpretive materials for the Farmhouse and Native American Museums. Alex developed a trail tour app for android smart phones. Based on our existing self-guided trail tour, the app includes audio, text, and GPS functionality to help our visitors explore our living collection and will be available soon in the iTunes store!
