Celebrated Photographers Examine Man’s Impact on the Environment and Social Issues April 17-June 21, 2015

Special Members Reception Friday, April 17, 2015, 6-8PM Industrial Sublime

Edward Burtynsky is one of Canada’s most respected photographers. His remarkable photographic depictions of global industrial landscapes are included in the collections of over sixty major museums around the world. His imagery explores the collective impact we as a species are having on the surface of the planet—an inspection of the human systems we’ve imposed onto natural landscapes. This exhibit explores the topographical landscape as it has been irrevocably altered by industries that feed the world’s appetite for material goods. Edward Burtynsky finds both attraction and repulsion in his depictions of mining, manufacturing, consumption, waste disposal and recycling. Rather than simply decry the human scarring of the land, he acknowledges the conflict between the human need for economic growth and the value of protecting our fragile ecosystem. The photographs in this exhibition show the terrible beauty of landscapes that have been altered by human industry. Afghanistan I Endgame

Ben Brody is an American documentary photographer who has covered the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan since 2003, both as a soldier and as a civilian. His work in Iraq was published in Photojournalists on War: The Untold Stories from Iraq, by Michael Kamber. His photo story Afghanistan I Endgame was recognized by the Leica Oskar Barnack Awards and Photolucida’s Critical Mass Awards in 2014. Brody’s work highlights the forlorn story of the absurdity, alienation, and unintended consequences of modern war. He has been an observer of evolving military culture and doctrine, and how it reflects the changing American character and political identity. Fruitlands Newsletter

From the Director’s Desk

Welcome Spring! Planning for the start of our main season begins before the ball has dropped on New Year’s Eve. Throughout the Winter Season as we enjoy sledding and snowball fights on the grounds, it’s often the mere thought of Spring that is our beacon, and that was certainly the case this year! We’ve put away our shovels and are delighted to welcome the season as we reopen all of the museum buildings, install outdoor sculpture and gather together at outdoor celebrations. This year, we continue the Museum’s Centennial year with programs that focus on environmental education and exhibitions that celebrate contemporary artists in New England and beyond. Through our partnership with the Harvard Public Library, our Fruitlands Reads initiative is starting with a special Earth Day celebration on April 19th that includes free admission for everyone. Literature is an important part of Fruitlands, and reading about the environment is a great connection to our living collection. We have so many wonderful programs planned for you that we’ve had to grow the size of this members newsletter, but not every detail can be included. In addition to checking out our website, please be sure to connect with us on Facebook and Twitter, so you have the most up-to-date information on what’s going on. We love our members and we’ve made changes in our membership programs that include new benefits at all levels. Members provide important support to the work we do at Fruitlands, and we also love those corporations, foundations, and organizations who have provided funding to our exhibitions and programs. Thanks to this generosity, our OPEN GATES initiative will continue this year, and we are able to offer many of our programs for minimal costs. Every donation makes a difference, and I hope you will add your name to this list of supporters by contributing to our Spring appeal. Use the envelope inside this newsletter to help us Spring Forward. Welcome back to Fruitlands and Welcome Spring.
