Notes on appliances from Kathleen Nelson of Apple Appliance Center

Kathleen Nelson knows a thing or two about appliances. She’s been the buyer for and coowner of Apple Appliance Center on Hilton Head Island for over 10 years, spending her days surrounded by machines built to make our lives easier in the twenty-first century and beyond. The C2 crew stopped into their showroom at 20 Capital Drive to get her opinion on what’s currently hot in kitchen appliances.

“Induction cooking is the wave of the future,” Nelson said, with that sparkle a person radiates when they are passionate about what they do. “It’s as precise as cooking with gas but with a sleeker look. I’m also in love with my steam-plus convection oven. It’s great for everything from steaming seafood and reheating leftovers to baking pies or roasting a chicken.”

Although Apple Appliance Center carries almost every top-of-the-line appliance you’ve known for years (GE, Whirlpool, Maytag, KitchenAid, and Speed Queen, to name a few), Nelson has a newfound appreciation for Bosch after recently renovating her kitchen with their line. Below she shares some notes on what she loves about each after using them in her own “test kitchen.”

THE BOSCH STEAM OVEN is one of my favorite appliances. I was able to use this oven in one of the most beautiful test kitchens at Bosch Headquarters in Irvine, California. It is a combination oven with multiple uses including European convection, proofing, reheating, and steaming. I love it because I can use all three racks for the full meal and get it all done pretty quickly. The steam oven has also replaced our microwave for reheating the leftovers, and the results are far superior. Living in the Lowcountry,

my favorite use of my steam oven is for seafood. We cook shrimp, fish, clams and oysters, and they all steam perfectly within a few minutes.

BOSCH DISHWASHERS have led the industry and are raising the bar for what consumers will expect from a dishwasher now and in the future. They are so quiet, a red InfoLight shines on the floor to let you know the dishwasher is on. The degree of clean is fantastic—without having to wash before you wash! I love the way the dishes feel and the glasses sparkle.

THE BOSCH GAS COOKTOP makes cooking a pleasure. The 36-inch cooktop allows plenty of space to cook large meals. The large center burner boils extremely fast and provides the most precise simmer I have experienced. The European design is simple but classic, and the burner placement is functional. The one-piece stainless steel base makes clean-up simple, and the sturdy cast iron grates can be cleaned in the dishwasher.

THE BOSCH REFRIGERATOR has a sleek and functional design. The French door is one of my favorites. The placement of space is thoughtful and functional, allowing ample food storage with technology to balance humidity and keep food fresher longer. The stainless trim on all of the shelves looks clean and fresh, while the stainless-steel exterior is easy to maintain with a simple wipe with a microfiber cloth. The icemaker produces large crescent cubes, and the dispenser is accurate and doesn’t shoot ice cubes at you!
