Music superstar Yoshiki paid a special visit to the University of Miami Phillip and Patricia Frost School of Music. The composer, pianist, drummer and leader of the group X Japan treated students to a special performance and master class moderated by Frost School Dean Shelton Berg. During the class, Yoshiki spoke of losing his father at age 10, and how he coped with the help of music. Now, he’s interested in learning more about music as therapy and the class offered at UM.

“I always think about how I survived my hard times, but I’m still here and breathing because of music,” he said. “One day I hope to investigate the feeling music brings to a person. I want to prove it scientifically.” Watch the full class here!

Yoshiki also donated $150,000 to the school, and in return, Berg named a suite after him. Yoshiki and Berg have worked together for 25 years, including a collaboration on the Golden Globes theme song. Check out the video below for the suite ribbon-cutting and their candid conversation.
