Welcome to the 2019-2020 season of Frost Music Live!

Our exciting annual concert series features our award-winning faculty artists and talented students together with esteemed guest artists, performing an amazing array of music from established masterpieces to cutting-edge premieres. Most concerts are held in the beautiful and intimate 600-seat Maurice Gusman Concert Hall on the University of Miami’s Coral Gables campus.

From classical to jazz and contemporary performances to thought-provoking musicology lectures, Frost Music Live has something for everyone. This year is a gala, inaugural season for three acclaimed new music directors in the Frost School: Gerard Schwarz—Frost Symphony Orchestra, Amanda Quist—Frost Choirs, and Maria Schneider—Henry Mancini Institute.

Please take note of the “Signature Series,” a festival of 25 special events within our season where world-renowned artists perform side-by-side with our world-class students.

Frost School’s Henry Mancini Institute Orchestra in Concert Maria Schneider, artistic director Scott Flavin, resident conductor Experience the Florida premiere of Mary Lou William’s Zodiac Suite. In it, she dedicated each astrological sign in her 12-part suite to famous people. For instance, Aries was dedicated to Ben Webster and Billie Holiday; Taurus was dedicated to Duke Ellington; and Aquarius was dedicated to then-president Franklin Roosevelt. Gerard Schwarz’s Debut— Frost Symphony Orchestra Gerard Schwarz, conductor Aaron Tindall, tuba In his debut as Frost’s new conductor of the Frost Symphony Orchestra, Gerard Schwarz offers a varied and demanding program.

It includes the suite from the ballet Estancia Gerard Schwarz/

Come Sunday—Frost Wind Ensemble

Robert M. Carnochan, conductor F. Mack Wood, graduate conductor Jennifer Grim, flute Omar Thomas, visiting composer Jennifer Grim, Frost’s new flute professor, performs a program of new music including Come Sunday, a piece co-commissioned by the Frost Wind Ensemble. Written by visiting composer Omar Thomas, the two-movement Robert M. Carnochan/Photo by Nathan Russell piece is a tribute to the Hammond organ’s central role in black worship services. Mysterious Mountain—Frost Symphony Orchestra

Gerard Schwarz, conductor Charles Castleman, violin Ross Harbaugh, cello Alan Hovhaness was one of the most prolific and spiritual 20th Century American composers.

His Symphony No.2, Mysterious Mountain, anticipated the work of “Holy Minimalists,” such as Arvo Pärt and John Taverner. Frost faculty Charles Castleman Ross Harbaugh artists Charles Castleman and Ross Harbaugh join the orchestra for Brahms’s Double Concerto in A Minor.

The closing piece is Dmitri Shostakovich’s powerful Symphony No.10 in E Minor, often described as his depiction of Joseph Stalin and the Stalin years. $ Ticket Required

A Night of Sheila Jordan— Frost Jazz Vocal I, Jazz Vocal II, and Extensions Kate Reid, director Sheila Jordan, voice NEA Jazz Master Sheila Jordan is a one-of-akind singer and songwriter. She studied with Lennie Tristano and Charles Mingus; called Charlie Parker her “big brother” and teacher; Shelia Jordan has performed and recorded as a leader as well as with top artists and groups; and then nearly invented a performing setting featuring just voice and acoustic bass. Mahler’s World— Frost Symphony Orchestra Gerard Schwarz, conductor Join the Frost Symphony Orchestra as it performs Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No.7, hailed as one of the most provocative symphonic statements of the early twentieth century. In it, his innovative instrumentation and demanding writing nearly reinvents the sound of the orchestra. Igor Stravinsky’s opera suite from Le chant du rossignol (The Song of the Nightingale), based on Hans Christian Andersen’s tale, follows. The program concludes with a new work by the winner of the Frost student composition competition. $ Ticket Required

Alan Johnson, program and music director Jeffrey Buchman, stage director Frost Opera Theater This timeless masterpiece from 1925 by Maurice Ravel, with libretto by Colette, and originally choreographed by George Balanchine, tells the story of a mischievous child who must suffer the fantastical consequences of his wicked actions. His very home comes to life in order to teach him a lesson, along with an opportunity for redemption. The opera is in French with English surtitles in a chamber orchestration for two pianos, cello, and flute.
